There was someone that recently posted either in this sub or r/HomeNetworking that they were using two Express routers in a similar configuration to what you're asking about. I suspect it depends on the devices, applications, network usage requirements, etc to truly know whether it will work. The Express are really meant for a smaller footprint, lower usage that some of the other alternatives like the UCG-Ultra and UCG-Max. Alternatively, you could look at Eero as a one-stop solution using the Eero Pro 6 or Pro 6E. I'd avoid the 6 and 6+. Too many issues with those models. And it should fit your budget.

r/Ubiquiti · Tips for the Unifi Express 7, this is my first Unifi. That makes sense. The original UX with WiFi 6 has an underpowered processor and insufficient memory. The UX7 addresses the shortcomings of the original UX. I’ve had no issues running UX7s in AP mode and it’s been no less stable than the U6 Lites they replaced. Just wanted to clear up the confusion since the OP posted a UX7.

r/Ubiquiti · Tips for the Unifi Express 7, this is my first Unifi. My tip: In case your installation grows in the future (as they tend to), do not fall into the trap of turning the UX into a mere AP. Sell it and get real, dedicated APs instead. I had a setup with a UDM Pro and a bunch of UX as access points (seemed like a good idea at the time). I always faced issues, especially with regard to stability and topology. I was close to leaving Ubiquity, but then sold all the UX and got regular APs instead. The network has been rock solid since then.

r/Ubiquiti · UniFi Express 7 as a wired AP + wired switch for Apple TV - Stable? Yes, this is one of the applications. I did exactly this at my parents home for a while since the master bedroom on the top floor didn’t have a good signal from the AP on the ground floor. I used a powerline adapter between floors and hooked up the UX (the older model, not the current UX7). The second Ethernet port was hooked up to an Apple TV for streaming.

The UX7 is the replacement, this is basically a UDR7 with a smaller form factor, less ports and no storage. The UCG-Ultra would need a PoE switch or PoE injectors to run the AP's The UX7 would just need a PoE switch, as it only has one LAN port. On paper the UX7 is capable of more throughput. Both are good options for starting out.

The Ultra is fine for smaller networks; it's just capped at 1 Gbit/s for LAN routing as well basically. If you can afford it, the UCG-Max is a good upgrade. Obviously, the full magical integrated UniFi experience also requires UniFi switches and APs, but for all the routing and VLAN stuff, the gateway is the most important piece of the puzzle. Just remember that your third party AP will probably not be able to tag different VLANs for different WiFi networks and so forth.

r/Ubiquiti · Cloud Gateway Ultra or Unifi express 6 We have AT&T fiber here, and I learned about bypassing their device in IP passthrough mode to use my own router or gateway for more control. I have the Unifi Cloud Gateway Max behind the AT&T gateway. The Max has no wifi capability, which is fine. I have two Unifi U6 Mesh APs to provide the wireless. I also have to Unifi U8 switches in the mix. The UCG Max has 2.5 GB ports and an incredible management and configuration tool. As others have suggested, the Express is probably not the ideal solution due to it being somewhat underpowered.

I recently (the past couple of weeks) broke mine out (the initial Unifi Express - not the 7) that I hadn’t used in some time and had only used temporarily for a handful of days before decommissioning it. It was in endless boot loop mode. Resetting would not correct it. You know what helped? Putting it in the freezer for a while to cool it off allowed it to completely reset and be readopted. Then it would become isolated and enter an endless boot loop again once it got warm. I tried for days to get it to readopt and work correctly and it never would. That initial version was junk and there have been numerous complaints about it. I threw mine away.

A few weeks ago the power went off and my ISP router restarted. It started blasting wifi with the same name (as it was my original router)... I have turned it's wifi off now and I'm pretty sure that was the problem. So thank you!

r/Ubiquiti · Is a UniFi Express 7 overkill for just a regular household? Let me share my story. I’ve been using an eero 6+ with a unmanaged switch from Netgear for years. It’s been rock solid but networking details are all locked behind a paywall. Also, eero does not have a web interface. My condo is roughly 1,000 sq. feet with cable ISP 1 Gb DL and 50 Mb UL. I have 19 devices connected with a mix of wi-fi 5, 6 and 7 clients. Then I bought a previous version of Express 6 (I believe) and it sucked ass. Plus Unifi forces you to buy their unmanaged switch if you want to get details on wired connections. It sucked both for coverage and throughput when compared to eero 6+. I bit the bullet and got UX 7 with USW Flex Mini. I got the same coverage as eero but better insights and better throughput. I got this equipment before eero announced their most recent line of wi-fi 7 devices and I am happy. I would recommend reviewing some of the videos on YT that show what you can see about your network with Unifi and how scalable it is. Then compare prices with eero but factor in their subscription fee to compare apples with apples.

Look at reveiws, the Express 6 was awful as a cloud gateway, it constantly froze for our home setup, it just wasn't powered enough or cooled well enough. I have heard mixed reviews on the 7, if you have a smaller home, look into GliNET, it runs a fork of WRT and can help your nerd out.

I even sent one to the factory under RMA after I bought it, so I tested 3 total. I have hundreds of ubiquiti networking products for home and two business locations. Pro, non-pro, enterprise, switches, gateways, wifi AP's. They tend to work fine. The Express model though is a failed product, that should be pulled from the market. It will cause you nothing but pain and suffering. If this had been my first ubiquiti product, I would have permanently blacklisted the company line for all business purchases. Buy anything but this product.

r/Ubiquiti · Is Unifi Express a good replacement for Google WiFi Mesh Router? Yes and no. I replaced my Google WiFi system with a bunch of UXs and had no complaints. But there is a limit to how many devices they can manage, and I wanted to add some other UniFi switches so I hit the limit basically immediately. There's a few solutions, but I ended up making my main gateway a Cloud Gateway Ultra instead, with the UXs all acting as APs, which they're much better at than the Google devices, honestly. That said, I ended up going down the rabbit hole and I'm running a UCG-Max now, various other switches, including PoE powered devices, a number of cameras, and a doorbell, so be warned 😁

r/Ubiquiti · Replacing eero setup with Ubiquiti UniFi Unstable is a bit vague but it's probably tough to get much detail from the Eero's. I suppose the main benefit you'll get from Unifi is more data, so better details on any problems in the network. It's up to you of course, but the Expresses are a bit underpowered. They're only officially rated for max 50 wifi clients, whereas the normal AP's are 300+. Also, for the one express using wireless backhaul, just know that any wifi device connected to it will have its max speed cut in half. The one upside is they have 2 ethernet ports. Just making sure you're aware of their limits. If that still meets your requirements, then they'll be fine. I'll throw out one last thing. The unifi world conference is in 5 days on the 23rd. They may release or announce new devices. Might be worth waiting to see if they have anything more powerful in the Express form factor. I wouldn't bet on it, but who knows.

I don't have much experience with MOCA but if your issues lie with those adapters in some way, the Unifi gear might not make a difference. What's the reason for the Unifi Expresses? Just for the power cables? You're a paying a bit more for less since those are routers and AP's in one. In regards to meshing (wireless backhaul) go for AP's with 4x4 streams on the 5ghz bands on both AP's. That will allow 2 dedicated streams for the backhaul. The U6 Pro has 4x4 but the Expresses only have 2x2. The U6 Mesh has 4x4 if you want a table top AP. They also come with a POE Injector in the box.

This thing takes forever to reboot. I came from pfSense which boots so quickly but I really wanted the whole network view. I took a gamble back in 2024 when the express was on sale for like $89. Now it’s just in AP mode and seem alright but it’s only a few devices in the garage. Didn’t wanna bash it hard but you’re right it is the worst.

r/Ubiquiti · U7 Mesh vs Unifi Express The U7 is an AP only, the express is a gateway with radio. So you would either need 3x Express or 3x U7 AND a gateway (which could be an express! You need one gateway. Unless you’re planning on using a third-party gateway in which case there’s not much point in getting the express. You could go with Goldilocks option of 1x express as the gateway for routing/radio and 2x u7 APs as mesh “extenders”. You might be disappointed with mesh performance as the devices don’t have dedicated backhaul over Wi-Fi. This means the clients use the same Wi-Fi as the device is used to communicate with each other which constraints and limits bandwidth quite significantly. As always, if you can run cables, it’s the way to go.

r/Ubiquiti · Using a UniFi Express as a cloud gateway I started with the express and two APs. Within 6 months I upgraded to the UCG ultra for more ports and a little more power. The express was initially fine, but as I moved into more IOT devices (had about 40 or so at one point), it definitely seemed to run slower and would hiccup occasionally. I think the hiccups were actually firmware issues, as they were fixed with firmware upgrades. I converted the express to an AP at this time. Then, as my old Hikvision cameras started to show their age, I moved to the UCG Max when it came out, and moved to Unifi cameras with Protect. Still ran a few Hikvision and one Turing camera for a while like this. The UCG went to my parent’s house since I manage their network anyway. Now, I have a 24 port POE switch, almost all unifi cameras, just received the UNVR this week since I am now exceeding the UCG Max camera capacity. Added the unifi mini rack on wheels too. I know this is more than what you asked for, but I would consider what (if any) other things you want to add to your network in the future, and start with the proper gateway now if possible.

r/Ubiquiti · UCG-fiber and 2 UniFi Express 7's I had them set up in a two story town house. One was on a high shelf on the first floor at the front of the home. The other was on a low shelf on the second floor at the back of the home. It was strictly wireless backhaul. Coverage was good. Speeds could be a little low upstairs but I suspect that was due to the wireless backhaul. I've since moved to a long, single story ranch style house. Similarly I have one UX at either end of the house. This time there is a wired backhaul though. Coverage is good. I've observed no issues.

r/Ubiquiti · Help Upgrading from UniFi Express to UniFi Express 7 The only issue you might run into is you probably have to be the owner of the Express, not just a super admin, to have it back up to the cloud since it's tied to your account so you can restore it to the Express 7. The other option is to download the backup from the network application's System tab, but I don't think that's a full console backup, though I'm not sure what that adds compared to just a Network backup.

The scheduled speedtest and the mapping tool just to name a few. It's interface is also very sluggish. in your case, I'd just get the ultra and add U6+ or in wall as AP, depending on placement preferences (U6+ is intended and should be used as ceiling mount)

It is pretty bad other than for like 5 devices Max I honestly do not know how it can handle 1Gb but somehow it can manage it, but it's exercising patients

Just deployed our first express in a retail shop. 1 pc, 1 phone on WiFi, and 1 moneris debit machine. Remoting into this takes minutes, rebooting takes 8-10 minutes. It's so bad. I wouldn't think any $250 router would properly do 3000sqft unless it was 4 walls and empty. That's a bad budget for good coverage. You are talking about controlling your home internet and WiFi, things you use daily... Maybe more usage that your mattress gets. Invest in it.

The UX has Smart Queues but [a different post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/193ri4d/smart_queue_disappointment_on_unifi_express/) suggests that it makes the UX very slow. The UX doesn't have IDS/IPS by the way. Other than that, the UX and an AP of your choice (with PoE injector) would be a $250 solution for you. I don't think you'll find two APs for $250 any other way in Unifi.

I would think that it would serve well in your use case, but do not have one of them, much less two. I have a UDM pro and a U7 wall. You could buy one Express, and see if it handles the area by itself. You can also upload a floor plan to Ubiquity's tool and place them where you think they should go and see how they will do

r/Ubiquiti · Replacing eero setup with Ubiquiti UniFi So I did it. Replaced the Eero network with Ubiquiti network. Setup is exactly as I described in the original post. Everything went pretty smoothly so far. Some observations. 1. The 1 Express in Mesh shows poor connectivity or U6 Pro that is right down the floor. Now sure why. It is barely 15 feet away. 2. I think u6 Pros were the wrong choice and I should have gone with meshes as I cannot install them on the ceiling and right now they are just sitting on tables near where my Ethernet cables terminate. 3. I am getting better WiFi speeds than eero. However, what WiMan claims vs. what other tools (Speedtest, fast.com) are very different. WiMan regularly shows 800megs but others never break past 250 so something is off. My problems with eero usually started in a few days so I have to wait and watch. True test will be zoom calls on Monday!
