Just set up my RBK852 this evening. By far the most frustrating set up I’ve ever done when it comes to a mesh system. Netgear must have it this on purpose solely just to know we suffer through this. Router updates itself naturally via the set up process. Once it does though it has the most up to date firmware buttttt the satellite(s) dont which means they won’t sync to the router. I had to dig through countless threads, forums, videos, etc. and of course the answer was found on Reddit and not Netgear site. Here’s how to fix the satellite issue, or at least what worked for me. 1) Go to Netgear support page, find your product, go to firmware, download the most recent RBS aka satellite firmware (which should usually be the firmware version that the router just updated too) and then extract it in your files. 2) connect the satellite to the router via Ethernet cord. 3) sit back and wait for as long as needed. Eventually the satellite will show up as a connected device in your list of devices connected to the router (should say RBS850 or whatever model you have). Once this appears click on it and make note of the IP address. 4) open a browser and enter that IP address into the URL bar and hit enter. Should take you to a satellite login page. 5) once in look to the left for the firmware option and select it. Then hit browse and select the extracted file and then upload. This should update your satellite to latest firmware. From there you can disconnect the satellite and move it to its new location, power it up, and it will sync with router. Once you’ve done this promptly pick up your RBR850 system and aggressively throw it out the window or take it to your nearest firing range.

I’ve been looking into other routers as well. I’ve thought about going with Eero. Not totally decided however. Whatever I use I have to be able to use my backhaul wirelessly. I can’t wire the satellite. Do you know quite a bit about this stuff?

Yes - i have no issues when connected directly to the gateway. I have a server connected to the router via ethernet and see the issues there as well, so it's not wifi. I think the orbi is suddenly having issues with the ip passthrough provided by the att gateway. I tried a firmware downgrade and full reset and reconfig without restoring from backup (which is a massive pain) and still see the issues. I just turned off all logging, which was suggested somewhere here... going to see if that fixes it - if not, going to switch over to ubiquiti like many of the suggested posts tell me to do.

1. Old house built in the early 70s or a little before. Wood and 1 plaster wall inside. I assume you mean inside walls and not out. 2. ONT is just an ONT. No WiFi capability. It’s a Calix GigaPoint 803G 3. Yes, good WiFi on router. It’s a Netgear Orbi RBK 852 unit. When I’m in the same room as the main router it’s anywhere from 500-800 or so mbps. Ping anywhere from 7-10 ms. I get random disconnects on my WiFi and also I have some disconnects on wired plus occasional buffering issues and weird video quality at random times when watching shows on my TV. I have an Apple TV 4K with a 1 gig Ethernet port. Speed tests on it… 939-942/940 ping is 4 ms. 4. Details about issues outside of ping spikes are detailed in answer 3. 5. I used the web interface to set it up. I was told the app doesn’t set up well. Also, something else I’ve noticed. My Orbi app now connects to my router rather slowly.

Because at the time I had more devices to wire than what the back of the Orbi supported. I pretty much just have my ONT plugged into it and my Apple TV. Along with the switch, of course. Everything else goes directly into the switch.

I had a hunch it was .31. The .31 firmware has problems. The general recommendation is to revert to the previous firmware.

Wait until August 23rd and pick up a Unifi Cloud Gateway Max with no Storage for $199 so you get access to the IDS/IPS for the firewall. It has all 2.5g ports and put Orbi in AP mode and see how that works for you. If you are still experiencing the same issue, then return it within the return window. Nothing in today’s networking world is cheap anymore unless you get TP Link products, but remember you get what you pay for. u/stratguy1441 in all honesty I don’t think my issues are related to speed as I used to think. I think it’s something off somewhere else. I maintain a pretty consistent speed of around 940/940 on my desktop PC when I check the speed. Obviously I’ll lose some of that while streaming content but I’ve actually checked speed on my desktop while streaming in 4K. At most it drops to like 880. My ping is low too. 5 ms on wired desktop.

In the channel interfaces section you can see how many wireless network are in your area and what channels they're on - 1, 8, 11 or 36. The Orbi should move the channel automatically to a less busy one. Though chances are, everyone else's networks are probably doing the same so it doesn't always work out.

I have the newest firmware. Was 6 something but 7 now. Also, my wired speeds seem to be pretty good. 930 or so down and up on my wired PC. Wi-Fi is where it’s all over the place. Used to be better not so much anymore. My ping is 8-10 and my speeds seem slower on my iPhone than they used to be. Also, my desktop speeds have slowed too.

What firmware version did you upgrade to? The 7.x.x.x version or still on the 4.x.x.x version? What sort of wireless speeds are you seeing? I've had the 852 for a few weeks and test off and on. I have gotten 786 down max (on a 1.2 gbps cable connection that has hit 1.4gbps at times)

Make sure all supported frequencies are enabled (2.4 +5ghz on mine) check for other wireless networks in the area that may be interfering and change yours to a less used channel. Check your wireless devices support the speeds you hope to get. Test the speeds in different areas of the house to see if it's no coverage causing the issue. If you have a satellite is it too close to the router. Is all firmware updated. If you still have support with netgear, log a case with them - we discovered an issue with my satellite from new so they replaced it. Just a few things off the top of my head

Totally defeats the purpose of a WIRELESS mesh Netgear Orbi WiFi mesh network. That’s the primary selling feature of the product. The product should work as advertised.

I agree. When I first got my fiber hooked up everything worked beautifully. Then little by little things just started going wrong. I can’t imagine what I’ve possibly done wrong. I just want it to be as good now as on day 1.
