Netgear Orbi 870

r/orbi · Orbi 870 - help needed For that size of home, having two RBS deployed maybe causing issues. Too much wifi over lap and over saturation of the wifi signals. Might turn OFF one RBS to see how the RBR and just one works for you. Be sure the RBS is starting distance at 30 feet. Try manual channels 1 and 40 or 11 and 48.
r/orbi · Plz recommend between Orbi 870, 970 or Eero Max 7 Either system is a solid system. Might base what you get based on home size.
r/orbi · 24 hours with my new Orbi 870 Would indicate there is a possible issue between the RBR and the ISP modem or ONT that it's connected too...What brand and model# is the ISP modem or ONT that you have? Is IPv6 enabled on the RBR or disabled? Using detected ISP DNS or custom DNS on the RBR? CAT6A STP cabling is recommended between the RBR and ISP modem/ONT
r/orbi · Orbi 870 Setup Ok Kinda small but should be ok it the RBR and just one RBS out at 30 feet.
r/orbi · Orbi 870 Setup What is the size of the home in Sq feet? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR 📡 and RBS 🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wired or wirelessly connected. r/orbi · Orbi 970/971 firmware when? Orbi is a joke. Save the hassle and change to ASUS or literally any other brand. Their broken firmware, slow update schedule and basic outdated app is nothing to stay for. I had the RBR750 which served well, upgraded to RBE872 which was complete trash and got an instant return to Amazon.
r/orbi · Current deal Orbi 870 I bough the 2 pack for $650 during Black Friday last year. Returned them due to lots of issues between the wireless backhaul. I’d avoid. I ended up getting ASUS BQ16 pro with no issues
r/orbi · Orbi 970 sucks, what to move to? ASUS BQ16 Pro has been amazing for me. I had the Orbi 870 and I returned it after a couple weeks: nothing but problems
r/orbi · My experience with Orbi 870 has been a nightmare No I don’t use Xfinity. To be fair, I did read quite a few negative reviews of the Orbi 870 before I got it, but got swayed by several other reviews from reputable sources that rated it highly. Decided to go with the Orbi thinking I’d have good luck but it just didn’t work with my setup. Ended up getting the ASUS BQ16 Pro and haven’t regretted it
r/orbi · My experience with Orbi 870 has been a nightmare UPDATE - Dec 3 2025 Returned the Orbi 870 for a full refund to Amazon. Purchased an ASUS BQ16 Pro (2 pack) during Black Friday for $719. Could not be happier, everything just __works. I’m now getting full gigabit speeds in every device that has the hardware for it. Wireless backhaul between the concrete floor that the Orbi struggled with is not an issue anymore. The ASUS app feels like generations above, and the level of customization is insane!
r/orbi · My experience with Orbi 870 has been a nightmare UPDATE — November 18, 2025 After a few more days of testing, I wanted to share an important update on my Orbi 870 experience. I finally managed to consistently connect several devices (iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPad Pro M2) to the 6 GHz band, and when they’re on 6 GHz, the system absolutely flies. I’m getting full gigabit speeds everywhere in my home, maxing out my ISP connection without any issues. Honestly, this almost made me reconsider the return — I even have my UPS drop-off scheduled in 2 days. But then I went back to test the 5 GHz band, and unfortunately the problem still exists. My iPhone 15 Pro can’t get more than ~300 Mbps on 5 GHz, even when standing right next to the satellite. Meanwhile, the 6 GHz device beside it gets 900+ Mbps. So the speed degradation is clearly isolated to 5 GHz only. This also confirms that the issue was never my wireless backhaul, house layout, or concrete construction. If it were, the 6 GHz performance would suffer — but it doesn’t. The system pulls full speeds flawlessly on 6 GHz. If I reboot the Orbi, the 5 GHz band works perfectly for about 12–24 hours, giving full speeds. But after that time window, the speeds slowly collapse again, always dropping to around one-third of what they should be. At this point, it’s very clear: the Orbi 870 hardware is incredible, but the firmware is not stable, at least on the 5 GHz radios. I truly hope Netgear fixes this because these units could be amazing if they worked properly. As of now, I’ll be moving forward with the return. Photo below for reference: My iPhone 15 Pro Max connected to 6 GHz pulling full gigabit speeds, while the iPhone 15 Pro next to it on 5 GHz is capped under 1/3 of that. r/orbi · How to upgrade smoothly a network with > 80 devices to an Orbi 770 with 2 satellites? I did exactly this in a transition from eero. It worked seamlessly. The one hiccup was a device that had a static IP. It was a bit of a challenge getting that set up. Are your 80 devices work machines or are they mostly iOT? I have about 50 devices on. Y network and I probably should have gone with 870 for some future proofing.

r/orbi · BEWARE: Orbi 770 is absolute trash. Netgear support is even worse. Had a very similar experience , I had upgraded my modem to a s34, and got the orbi 870, bc my old first gen Google wifi mesh system couldn’t do my new upgraded speed of 2 gigabytes so wanted to take full advantage of the new speed. It was 3 weeks of hell, thought it was the modem, then thought it was internet provider, then thought it was the orbi mesh system. Spent countless hours with tech support from all three. I had the issue that my internet was super slow was going like 2-25 megabytes and upload was less than 1 megabit at times. Oh god I was mad spent so much money on all this new tech and was frustrated that all the tech support people were like Just restart/reboot/factory reset. After all this time I finally figured out what was wrong, it turns out on these high speed internet plans if you coax line has a splitters at all the signal depletes over time sometimes it takes a couple days for it degrade so your system goes into survival mode and you get this poor ass internet speed. Anyways I went into the attic removed the splitter and put in a good quality barrel connector and it’s been weeks and my internet is working great.

Largely plug and play for me and I now realizing the full speeds of my internet tier. In some cases this is 5x increase in speed compared to my old 850.

r/orbi · 24 hours with my new Orbi 870 Yep. Brought a brand new Orbi and it refused to act as a bridge (wanted the whole show). Spent two days trying to configure (to replace an existing Orbi that was setup as a bridge AP). Packed the new unit up and returned it and bought Ubiquiti U7 long range. Installed the Unifi server on a converted laptop running Ubuntu Linix (necessary only if you want multiple AP's in a seamless mesh). Took a few hours to setup but was relatively easy. Once the server was up and running, I added two more units and it found them immediately and asked if I wanted to import them to my network. Two minutes later the mesh system was running and has not faltered for months. Highly recommend this hardware. Orbi is just shite in comparison.

r/Ubiquiti · Advice on picking UniFi Express 7 vs Cloud Gateway Max Specification wise the Orbi 870 radios (use Qualcomm chip set) should be better - 4x4 MIMO for Orbi vs 2x2 for Express 7, so should get 2x the speed in the 5/6GHz bands. My thinking was that if I use the Orbi in bridge mode, with an UniFi router would get better security and features and keep my Orbi with the good radio performance. The Express 7 is $80 less than the Gateway Max. So at least with the Express 7 could run my IoT devices on 2.4GHz network (vs keeping on Orbi).

r/orbi · Current deal Orbi 870 Its working out. Had to work through getting the placement just right. I used all three pieces and backhaul with 2 with moca. I very rarely need to reboot and when I do its usually xfinity acting up and not the orbi. Yhe only recurring issue I have is actually google related. I have a lot of older iot, 60+ that includes a fair fit of gen 1 gen 2 google that just do not want to stay connected. I've read it due to the switching and hand offs or something. Funny though, when the google stuff drop, it all drops off.everthing else is purring right along.

r/orbi · Orbi 970 sucks, what to move to? I've had my Orbi 870 since early 2024. I had it initially in a 2 story house, and now a single story since I downsized. No real issues either way. r/orbi · My experience with Orbi 870 has been a nightmare I'm using Orbi 870, and one of my device includes iPhone 15 Pro Max. It works just fine for me. I dont use anything that requires continuous gigabit speed for 12-24 hours. I also confused when you said you are using 6 GHz in your iPhone 15 Pro Max, since that phone doesn't even have Wifi 7. The only problem I have with Orbi 870 is when I try connecting it with my older Orbi RBS50. Not only it is not compatible, but it also ruined the Orbi 870 wifi signal. So make sure you dont connect the system to another system.

r/orbi · Orbi 970 PPPOE Thank for this. MTU is already set at 1492. When I put the Orbi in access point mode I then see the full line speeds. That’s what’s made me think it’s something to do with the 870 not having a powerful enough processor. I’ve disabled netgear armour which has increase the speed slightly.

r/orbi · My experience with Orbi 870 has been a nightmare Maybe you just got a bad batch? I'm planning to upgrade to the 870 due to my Internet having the same issue you've mentioned but I've had the ORBI RBR50 which is about 5yrs old and I haven't had an issue with my Internet till this past month. Also thinking it may have a 4yr-6yr life unsure cuz I had a previous that shit the bed 2016-2020(not to discourage anyone) But before I get the expensive 870 I want to go through other solutions 1st which is to replace my Netgear modem (Nighthawk CM2000-100NAS) which I had for 4yrs. Because I noticed unplug/plug in fixes the issue temporarily... Been part of the ORBI club since it launched in 2016 If all else fails maybe eero/Google mesh wifi might be good, but I'm the go big or go home type of person so I like to get the best high end especially living in a 3 family house I read recently that Xfinity(if that's your provider) has an issue with Netgear when it comes to updating the firmware for their products so maybe thats part of the problem

Went with the 870 and it was constant aggravation with mine. Installed it and it was great for a few months. For the past 6 weeks, WiFi connected devices would just drop while using them. Would have to forget the network and re-login in order to reconnect. Tried all the suggestions to fix it finally gave up and got an eero system so far so good. Eeros management console app is much better IMO, and so far great speeds and no dropped connections.

r/UNIFI · Switching from Netgear Orbi to Unifi ~ what are my set up options It's a shame Orbi has show stopper bugs like hourly packet loss and lag on the 770/870/970. I disagree on mesh performance though. I'm mostly hard wired now but my one remote UniFi AP has far better backhaul speed and client speed than either orbi or eero could deliver at that distance, regardless of dedicated backhaul. Hell, orbi wouldn't even link in this geometry and distance. It depends on the scenario.

r/orbi · Orbi 870 with att fiber Just got the 870 a couple of days ago on a 2GB Xfinity connection. There's only one 2.5Gb port on the Xfinity modem/router. I plug my 870 into that, then I plug my PC into the 870 Satellite's ethernet port. I'm seeing <1ms increase in latency from this but still seeing 100% of my speeds via the Satellite/PC combo. I can't speak for your exact config, but I know the other Ethernet ports on the Xfinity router/modem max out at 2.5Gb.

r/orbi · Orbi 870 Ethernet weirdness Well... my monitoring program is no longer very reliable at telling me when I really do have a network problem. But mostly it seems limited to pings dropping. I'd still like to explain what the router is doing that causes that though. Because previous routers were rock solid.
r/orbi · Orbi 870 Ethernet weirdness Other problems include dropping ping packets. I have a ping program that records when a ping fails. With my previous router, it would rarely drop a packet (unless the network was actually down), it would go for days or weeks without dropping a ping. This new Orbi system will periodically drop pings. Perhaps dozens of times per day, no particular timing, though they tend to be clustered. So for an hour or two it may lose a bunch of packets, then it'll be fine for several hours. Then it may drop a few here and there again. No resolution on that one yet.

Peut-on réutiliser d’anciens satellites Orbi ?

Same. Dumped it for TP Link & no problems
