Not gonna lie. Netgear lifer but not anymore! Switched from 970s to Deco BE95! Unbelievable experience. Dedicated WiFi 6E/7 SSID. 4-5 GBPS download on WiFi 7 devices!!!! I’m speechless. Zero drops for 2 weeks and no iPhone WiFi issues. It just works! Amazing speeds!

Luckily I returned that heap of shit and got every cent of my money back. I then left a horrific review on Netgear's website. Does this system truly have all the capabilities the 970 claims to have, the increased speed between devices on your LAN, WIFI7 perks like the 6 gHz radio, a dedicated 5 gHz backhaul, etc? My use case is I wanna do wireless PCVR and I want that intranet speed poppin' 😭. I have an orbi system now that is flawless that I got from Costco a while back. It just doesn't have the WiFi 7 stuff and increased inter device bandwidth. I'm glad you posted this though cuz I didn't even know what to buy to have a good mesh network. Their website is not the greatest for recommending the things you would need.

    r/orbi · Plz recommend between Orbi 870, 970 or Eero Max 7 →2026-05-12T08:53:23

No, in fact wired back-haul from main to satellite is always recommended (faster connection, less latency, doesn't cause congestion or additional WiFi networks to be spawned etc), your mesh WiFi will still work if it's using WiFi back-haul, but you need to be careful with positioning of the satellite (not too strong or weak connection to the main). Having said all that, I use the 970+971 with WiFi back-haul and it's blistering fast, even with the recent hokey-cokey firmware releases. Would I recommend the orbi 970s? Yeah I would, but if you have a problem you'll probably be best asking for help in here (the user furrynutz particularly) as the official support can be hit and miss. If you don't have a problem, and you can get a config that works for you (mine is disable ipv6, the additional security service, and a few other recommended tweaks) and it seems pretty bulletproof and speedy. A nice change I found was using dnsperf to find the fastest DNS servers nearest you and use those which seems to make everything feel even snappier. It can be a bit of a journey, but it's worth it! There will be a few saying don't touch orbi with a bargepole, but not everyone's experience is bad (or good, to be fair), but with mesh systems the grass isn't always greener (I went through a couple of eero systems and wasn't too impressed although their firmware updates are well managed and frequent, which you certainly won't see from Netgear). Hope that's food for thought.

I ran Ethernet. I actually had one run already done and was using it for wired backhaul with the Orbi 970. I did another run, drilling holes and stuff that I didn’t want to do, to run for another wireless backhaul for Orbi, thinking that might make the piece of garbage work. Entirely wired mesh and it sucked ass and didn’t work. So, with the wires there already, it was easy to throw this in. And my god, it’s wonderful so far.

This is likely the reason why I really haven’t had major issues with my 971/970s. They are set to AP mode and do all my routing with a Netgate 4100. The only issue I had was caused by a misbehaving wireless card on my son’s gaming PC and MLO but that was resolved with a driver update.

Recent upgrade to [7.2.7.15](http://7.2.7.15) has been nothing short of a disaster. The new version is not visible when checking for updates through the web management interface. Manually updating satellite routers fails, requiring each satellite to be manually upgraded individually. It was only later, through ChatGPT, that I learned the correct procedure: upgrade the satellites first, then the main router. After the upgrade, problems arose. The network becomes extremely slow after a period of time, with no apparent cause. I had to back up the configuration, reset all main routers and satellites, and then reconfigure and re-pair everything.

Dream Router 7 - $279 (absolutely a steal) 2 of the E7 Access Points - $998 2.5Gb Flex POE switch - $214 2 Ethernet POE injectors - $80 Total: about $1600 I am pretty sure I spent more than that on my Orbi 970 setup + additional satellite I still have one “dead zone” in my house that old construction and plaster and brick is blocking a good signal too. That said, Orbi just used to randomly drop our devices in this room. Now everything works but I’m not getting the insane speed test speeds I get elsewhere. So I probably don’t have to actually do anything about it, but well, this forum is all about overkill.

I have to say with the firmware they have me testing for the first time in literally a year the connections have been stable and fast. I'm likely to keep the eeros off and use these full time again. If this is a firmware that gets released soon, it may help with many of the problems here. I was their biggest detractor. They have handled this poorly but may have somehow fixed their major issues. We'll see

The Orbi 970 firmware is an absolute disaster, fundamentally crippled by Band Steering Schizophrenia that forces devices into a constant, useless loop of frequency hopping. This is the direct result of Aggressive Roaming Over-optimization, where your engineers prioritize superficial performance metrics over actual network reliability. Every time the system forces my MacBook from 6GHz to 5GHz and back, it creates an mDNS/Multicast Black Hole that completely severs the discovery chain for AirPlay and HomePod. This is a garbage system—a glorified paperweight—that is technically incompetent at handling the most basic multicast routing, sacrificing user stability for the sake of marketing numbers that mean nothing in the real world

    r/orbi · Orbi 970/971 firmware when? →2026-06-01T11:18:41

When initiating macOS iPhone Mirroring, the Orbi 970 aggressively forces the MacBook from 6GHz to 5GHz. 2 Upon ending the session, it forces the device back to 6GHz. 3 This constant, unnecessary frequency hopping breaks the mDNS/multicast chain. The Orbi's firmware fails to maintain or proxy the multicast state during these transitions, rendering HomePod/AirPlay connectivity unreachable until a full reboot or session restart. It is clear that Netgear prioritizes superficial throughput numbers and "smart" band balancing over actual application-layer stability. The system is incapable of handling basic multicast routing during roaming events. If you need a stable network for Apple services, avoid this product. The firmware is a mess, and the "advanced" features are actively sabotaging network stability.

r/UNIFI · Switching from Netgear Orbi to Unifi ~ what are my set up options →2025-11-04T14:27:59

To keep it simple and short. If coverage is your reason for changing then you'll be disappointed as Unifi WiFi signals are poor compared to the Orbi and for a mesh system with wireless backhaul, the Orbi is way better. However, it doesn't mean you can't achieve something similar with Unifi if more control is what you want. You can combine UDR7 and UX7 for a full wireless mesh. In my home I have UDR7 as my main router and 2 UX7 as AP (One is wired and one is wireless). I have a PC connected to the end of the wireless one and it still works great but it's largely dependent on the signal gotten from the parent node. I have a 1gb internet and get roughly 900+ Mbps from my WiFi 6E and 7 devices and 1.1gb from my wired devices. However my pc connected to the wireless AP gets between 850-900mbps. On the cost side it costs me half the same price as 2packs Orbi 970

Just wiring is not an option; It needs to cross 3 walls; 3 rooms in a diagonal fashion That's why I've been using Orbi's for years but 970 orbi randomly reboots on me once a week at least; and I've hit my limit

UniFi system apparently does wireless mesh but it’s not recommended and not intended for that. It’s supposed to be hardwired. I had run hard wires just to try and get my 970 working right, so thankfully had the wires there already. Was well worth it. This system is unbelievable.

With all these bad reports about Orbi, in my case my 970 router and two extenders have worked flawlessly since I got them. In my situation I am able to hardwire the backhaul on one of the satellites and use the wireless backhaul on the other extender. With proper placement I’m getting near wired speed on the extender with the wireless backhaul. I considered Ubiquiti but I’m not able to run Ethernet cabling all over my home for the access points so in my case the Netgear solution was better. I agree, the control and monitoring of the Orbi is very limited. I wish they had something more fun with more control but Orbi is a residential general consumer system so I guess Netgear feels a complex control system is not needed.

I will keep track of what you're posting. I moved from Orbi 853 to 970. I selected Orbi above all others for having Quadband. But the app does always do weird stuff, I can't hide the Backhaul nor the IOT Network, the Sat. connection drops, the Router freezes, I suddenly have internet for no reason whatsoever and It's an exchanged device already. Are the Ubiquity Accesspoints/Repeater only powered by PoE or is there an alternative to it?

    r/HomeNetworking · Asus BQ16 Pro or Netgear 970 →2025-02-15T22:55:23

I ended up testing both. They both performed very well similar speed wise everywhere I tested in our house and outside. Asus BQ16 Pro might be somewhat faster in spots. I ended up keeping the Asus BQ 16 Pro. Feel like it has more options than the Netgear 970, a three warranty and their security package is free, where Netgear is a subscription. Also, like the web interface and the Asus app better than Netgear. I would be happy with either, but the Asus is an overall better value. The only thing I wish it had was 2.5 gbe ports instead of the 1 gbe and then it would be the absolute best. It does offer 2 10gbe ports, while Netgear only offers one.

Our house is 4900 square feet, 4 floors including basement, and it's a house built in 1862 (completely renovated in 2010) with lots of concrete etc between floors. I originally went router plus 3 satellites, and had lots of problems. I did the signal analysis I linked to above, and ended up using a router and 2 satellites - router in the basement where the cable line comes in, 960 satellite on the first floor, and one on the 3rd floor. It works great - no dead spots. That's it! If you decide to go with the 970 series (which you will get slightly enhanced range over the 960 and it will be future proofed for when WiFi 7 devices come), this page [https://www.netgear.com/home/wifi/mesh/rbe972sb/#twister-list](https://www.netgear.com/home/wifi/mesh/rbe972sb/#twister-list) says a 2 pack (router and 1 satellite) handles 6600 square feet, and 3 pack (2 satellites) handles 10,000 square feet! Now there is more to it than just square feet - dimensions of the house, interferences, concrete and other materials hard to get through, etc. etc. - but you have 2 choices I think - depending on whether you want to go "save money" or "minimize risk" plan - save money - get a 2 pack - if you find you need another satellite, you can buy an individual one later. Or - "minimize risk" - get the 3 pack, but don't use the second RBS unless you find you need it. And as I think about it, if I knew what I knew now, and had nothing, I would go with the 970 - my biggest reason is the firmware is more stable. 960 is not bad, but 970 is better in my subjective opinion. Just don't do the overkill of too many satellites unless signals show it's necessary. A room with multiple Orbi's pounding a WiFi radio signal in there will confuse the heck out of devices. My worst areas of the house, "dead spots", get 200 Mbps d/l speeds. Way less than 1400, but it's corners of rooms I don't do much computing in, and that speed will still handle multiple 8K streaming videos easily!! And what can't I do computer-wise with 200 Mbps?

I've installed the Orbi 7 mesh with 2 satellites on my AT&T fiber. My direct wired ethernet speeds are 935 Mbps down, 860 Mbps. However, as measured from any port (wired or wifi) on the Orbi 7 system, my downloads are relatively the same as directly through the gateway router, but the upload speeds are 10% or so of the direct gateway wired upload. I'm running the latest firmware and the speeds are the same whether I'm on the router or any of the satellites. No solution from Netgear support. The backhauls are on a dedicated channel. Let is know what speeds you achieve after installation.

Thank you. Was just concerned given Netgear briefing note on their site as to why they would describe it as “ISP speeds up to 500 mpbs.” That seems really low given WiFi 7 potential and given ports speed of Orbi 7. Again, my Orbi 860 gets 800 mpbs and I am seeking something that lets me take advantage of the full 1.5 I am getting from my ISP. Hoping it may be the Orbi 770 as Orbi 970 seemed like overkill (and of course more expensive).

That size of home and if your going to have the RBS ethernet connected, the main RBR and just 1 RBS would be enough. More RBS would cause problems, even when wire connected. I have a 5k Sq Ft home and can run just one RBS ethernet connected. When I have two RBS connected with my other Orbi systems, I turn down the power to 25%. Runs well. Thought the 970 series doesn't have power adjustments which I'm hoping NG will put back in at some point. Help tune the system better for smaller sized homes.
