Globalement, je dirais que : - Proton Mail, c'est très bien, mais il faut avoir en tête que de manière inhérente, les mails ne sont pas un protocole privé, le mail en clair est toujours présent de l'autre côté. - Proton VPN, c'est bien mais je ne l'utilise pratiquement jamais. - Proton Drive a l'air bien, mais est inutilisable pour moi tant qu'il n'y a pas de client Linux. La partie photos est encore trop inaboutie. - Proton Pass est très bien. Les alias de mails aussi marchent bien même si l'argumentaire "protection contre les spams" est un peu obsolète à mon avis vu l'efficacité des filtres à spam modernes. - Proton Calendar manque encore de fonctions basiques (recherche) pour que je m'en serve.

Je vis au Japon. J'ai donc protonvpn qui me sert pour deux choses. Me localiser en France pour accéder à certains sites (bon ça je pouvais faire gratos et ailleurs). Mais l'intérêt majeur ça reste pour torrent. On Japon ils sont plus sévère qu'en France là dessus. Si mon FAI voit que je torrent il peut mettre fin au contrat par exemple

Ne jamais faire confiance aux VPN sur son propre territoire, malheureusement.

Les vendeurs de VPN ont mis l'accent en disant que ça apporte de la sécurité et que ça empêche les attaques pirates (et encore ils disaient plus que ça avant) mais en réalité la seule sécurité que tu peux avoir c'est à la limite en WiFi Public où tu peux y trouver du sens pour éviter les petits malins de bas niveau ensuite c'est un plus qu'un VPN qu'il faudra. Sinon tu peux les utiliser pour faire croire que tu te situes ailleurs ou pour te désolidariser de ton réseau personnel. Mais justement, on n'a pas tous l'utilité de ce genre de choses. Pour l'argument du WiFi public, la plupart des box internet ont des paramètres nous permettant de transformer notre box en VPN et pour l'argument de se situer à l'étranger ProtonVPN est vraiment bon et gratos.

Parce qu'ils n'ont de vpn que le nom. Aucun respect de la vie privée, collecte massive de données et aucun scrupule à les fournir à des gouvernements sur simple demande. Là où Mullvad ou ProtinVPN sont réputés pour leur volonté de fer de respecter de la vie privée de leurs utilisateurs.

Pour l'instant l'unique qui a fait l'épreuve du feu c'est Mullvad, suite à une descente de police sur laquelle ils n'ont rien pu donner comme données. ProtonVPN faut effectivement saisir la nuance, non, ils ne gardent pas de "logs" mais oui, s'ils ont une réclamation légal (fraude, malware), ils vont observer en direct (donc pas de log, juste regards du flux en direct) et bannir ton compte ou plus dépendant de la situation. Donc techniquement ils ne mentent pas sur le no log. Par contre Proton est soumis à la loi (d'ailleurs ils ont un rapport de transparence car ils se battent en justice contre ça) et il est possible qu'ils doivent mettre en place un suivi des metadatas, à nouveau, par la loi mais ils sont pas idiots non plus (pour la partie courriel), tu peux avoir accès à leur service à travers Tor, justement s'ils reçoivent une réquisition judiciaire.

Non du coup, c'est les metadata sous procédure judiciaire, pas les logs d'action et la raison pour laquelle c'est accessible par Tor.

Mais le jeu du chat et la souris entre les habitués du streaming illicite et les détenteurs de droit devrait prochainement franchir une nouvelle étape cruciale. C’est en tout cas ce qu’espèrent la chaîne cryptée et la Ligue de football professionnel (LFP). Après avoir obtenu la coupure d’accès à des centaines de sites chez les fournisseurs d’accès à Internet (FAI comme Orange, Bouygues, Free, SFR, principalement), les acteurs du sport ont étendu leur bataille auprès des « résolveurs DNS », des annuaires convertissant les noms de domaines saisis par les internautes en adresses IP de serveurs où sont stockés les sites. Avec une nouvelle vague d’assignations adressée fin 2024, la Ligue de football professionnel (LFP) et Canal+ sont passés à la vitesse supérieure en appelant à la barre cette fois les principaux fournisseurs de réseaux privés virtuels (virtual private network, ou VPN en anglais) : NordVPN (France), Proton VPN (Suisse), Cyberghost (Roumanie), Surfshark VPN (Pays-Bas) et ExpressVPN (Îles Vierges britanniques). Ces outils permettent à leurs abonnés de se voir attribuer une adresse IP localisée dans un autre pays que la France, par sécurité mais aussi pour contourner les blocages déjà ordonnés par la justice. Canal a agi en défense de ses droits sur le foot (Premier League, Ligue des Champions), le rugby (Top 14) mais aussi MotoGP et les courses de Formule 1, la LFP pour protéger les matchs de la Ligue 1, de la Ligue 2 et du Trophée des Champions. Tous les deux réclament le blocage d’environ 150 sites comme soccerstreams.cc, rojadirecta.tv, myp2p.tv, kooracity.cc ou encore futbollibre.ws, mais aussi des services de télévision par Internet tels Dino TV, Facto, ou NETIPTV. En face, les VPN ont fait feu de tout bois pour repousser leurs demandes. L’Informé était présent à une audience majeure organisée le 28 avril au tribunal judiciaire de Paris. Compte rendu.

« J’ai produit plusieurs procès-verbaux démontrant que via les VPN, on peut contourner les mesures de blocage ». Dans sa plaidoirie, Richard Willemant, avocat de Canal Plus, a insisté pour que les fournisseurs de réseau privé virtuel entrent dans la boucle de leur lutte anti-piratage. « Et ils font déjà ce que nous demandons, en protégeant leurs utilisateurs des sites malveillants ou des virus qu’ils bloquent. Mais comme par hasard, ces services très protecteurs ne veulent pas protéger leurs utilisateurs contre des sites qui diffusent des contrefaçons. C’est quand même le monde à l’envers ! » Pour établir la liste des sites que ces prestataires devraient bloquer, la chaîne a pioché dans les différents noms de plateformes de streaming déjà épinglées par des décisions de justice pour de multiples « atteintes graves et répétées » à ses intérêts sur le sport. Elle a également demandé une mesure de publication judiciaire sur chaque réseau privé virtuel, dans un objectif de pédagogie à l’égard des internautes. « C’est parfaitement justifié puisqu’une partie de leur publicité se fonde sur l’allégation qu’avec nous, vous pouvez lutter contre la censure des gouvernements – ce que je comprends, mais aussi accéder à des sites bloqués dans certains pays. Ce qui n’est pas admissible puisque cela revient à parasiter l’abus commis par certains de leurs abonnés et attirer vers eux du trafic. » Sur le terrain juridique, l’avocat s’est appuyé sur l’article L333-10 du Code du sport, tout en citant le règlement sur les services numériques (DSA, Digital Services Act), un texte européen qui a dépoussiéré le régime de responsabilité des intermédiaires techniques et cite désormais nommément les réseaux privés virtuels. Ce même DSA rappelle que dans chaque État membre, une autorité judiciaire ou administrative peut exiger d’un « fournisseur de services qu’il mette fin à une infraction ou qu’il prévienne une infraction » (article 4, paragraphe 3 du DSA).

J'utilise Proton Mail depuis 3 ans et les autres outils depuis 1 an, voici un retour : - Proton Mail marche très bien et a complètement remplacé gmail pour moi, et s'améliore régulièrement (filtres, traitement des newsletter, etc) - Proton Drive est bien, c'est devenu mon Drive de documents importants et mon backup de photos du téléphone qui se fait automatiquement. Le client windows marche bien aussi sur mon ordi de taff - Proton VPN marche bien mais je m'en sers peu ne voyageant pas - Je n'utilise pas encore Proton pass mais j'ai prévu de m'y mettre - Proton Calendar est pour moi le moins abouti, même s'il s'améliore vite. Pour mes calendriers partagés de famille c'est encore un peu aride et lent comparé à Google calendar

Oui et non, ça permet d'éviter les restrictions françaises mais effectivement, certains sites peuvent bloquer un serveur VPN en particulier. On est loin d'avoir tous les sites qui font ça hein. Par contre l'aspect anonyme d'un VPN est complètement faux. T'as même des VPN qui balancent les utilisateurs "malveillants", c'est à bien vérifier si tu fais des choses pas très légales (au passage être chez free permet d'être un tout petit peu plus protégé à ce niveau-là) Pour mon utilisation un peu avancée, j'ai proton VPN gratuit de temps en temps et ça me suffit. Par contre c'est évidemment pas suffisant pour regarder des vidéos en direct.

La bonne nouvelle c'est que c'est pas possible, il sera toujours possible de faire en sorte que le flux VPN soit encapsulé dans un flux sécurisé qui n'est pas differentiable de celui qui t'a permi de lire cet article. Pour te donner une idée, même la chine n'a pas réussi à bloquer complètement les VPN, et on parle pas de techniques folles, en faisant une rapide recherche je vois que des VPN grand public tels que Proton ou ExpressVPN arrivent à le contouner sans souci

Mullvad a eu un raid de la police, et aucune donnée n'a pu être récupérée. Alors que chez Proton, il y a eu l'affaire d'un activiste recherché par la police dont Proton a donné l'adresse IP. Ils sont obligés par la loi suisse de collaborer avec les autorités suisses. Après quasiment tout est crypté donc peu de risque mais voilà il y a eu quelques cas

Je comprend ce que tu dis, après voilà, Proton Free c est bien mais pas assez rapide pour une utilisation quotidienne, et c'est deux fois plus cher que Mullvad déjà pour pas tellement plus de rapidité. Si la redirection des ports est essentiel je comprendrais. Mais voilà moi je suis sur Linux, Mullvad c'est 5 balles, pas de compte à créer, pas de mot de passe, et ça marche du tonnerre. Proton VPN et Planet VPN gratuit sur téléphone. Opera fournit AdGuard VPN gratuit il me semble sur PC. Sinon j'avais une autre option gratuite qui te permettait de choisir une adresse IP parmi une liste et te logguer dessus (ce qui n'est pas le cas avec les autres VPNs gratuit). Sinon pour la confidentialité, selon tes usages tu peux soit utiliser Tor, soit un chargeur de DNS

J'utilise proton vpn: Quand je me connecte à un wifi public type macdo, aéroport, centre commercial, on sait jamais si c'est un vrai ou faux wifi. J'avais nord vpn c'était ok. Je suis passé à la fibre 2.5Gbs, nord vpn ne dépasse pas les 1.2Gbs, j'ai essayé proton j'atteins presque 2Gbps (serveurs p2p).

Proton Mail est #1 de très loin pour moi. Interface sympa, app mobile très fonctionnelle, filtres d'email parfaits, domaines custom avec catch-all possibles, ... Proton VPN fonctionne bien, pas de problème de connexion ou débit. Un peu chiant à configurer pour des logiciels de P2P, le port de redirection change à chaque fois donc c'est pas aussi simple que d'autres (mais une fois la bonne config trouvée c'est nickel) Le reste j'utilise pas même si ça fait partie de mon abonnement, j'ai un NAS en local pour ça.

Je sens que c'est un sujet qui te tient à cœur mais pas besoin d'être aussi agressif. En l'occurrence j'ai accès aux endpoints payants de Proton vu que je paie pour les autres services et c'est peut-être pour ça que jusqu'ici je n'ai pas eu de soucis de type "VPN détecté". L'avantage d'un VPN dans mon cas d'utilisation (par rapport au changement de DNS) c'est que le plugin est installé automatiquement dans mon navigateur de référence via mon compte, ce qui veut dire que, /pour mon cas d'utilisation/, c'est un clic et je suis où je veux (trois clics si je veux changer d'endpoint). C'est simple et efficace. Certes, être capable d'utiliser d'autres outils, savoir changer son DNS, ce sont des compétences accessibles, mais parfois des solutions plus simples fonctionnent pour le commun des mortels. Aujourd'hui les VPNs sont des bons moyens de contournement de géolocalisation. J'aurais tendance à recommander Proton qui se sert du tier gratuit non pas pour revendre les données des utilisateurs mais pour les faire venir dans leur écosystème payant (plus de choix d'endpoints et serveurs avec de biens meilleures performances)

franchement en france t’as quasi rien de bloqué, donc un vpn c’est pas “obligatoire” pour la vie de tous les jours. la vraie utilité c’est surtout : * protéger tes données quand t’es sur un wifi public * mater des catalogues netflix/streaming étrangers * accéder à des sites français si t’es à l’étranger niveau services, les plus cités ici c’est nordvpn, surfshark (pas cher) et protonvpn (bon pour la vie privée). en gros ça dépend si tu veux juste un truc pas cher ou un truc orienté sécu.

Après je ne critique pas l'offre commerciale, je corrige juste l'aspect vie privée qui est souvent mal connu sur proton. J'aime bien Mullvad aussi et je suis aussi sur linux. Les deux ont des avantages qui leur sont propres. Les lois pour la Suisse dont tu parles ne sont pas encore votées et ne sont donc pas encore passées, elles seront peut-être refusées. Non tu confonds beaucoup de choses là. Tout est chiffré donc que ça soit un raid chez mullvad ou chez proton, ils ne récupéreront rien, en plus de ça proton fait du mail, du drive, du gestionnaire de mot de passe et tout ça est chiffré, personne excepté l'utilisateur peut lire ses données. Les décisions de justice c'est autre chose et dans le cas de proton c'était sur la partie mail (ils n'ont aucune donnée pour la partie vpn) et ils ont été obligés par le gouvernement. Mullvad pourrait très bien être également obligé de donner ses informations à la Suède si elle le demandait, le truc c'est qu'ils font que vpn donc n'ont aucune donnée, comme ProtonVPN juste qu'eux c'était sur la partie mail. La Suisse est indépendante alors que la Suède fait partie des fourteen eyes, une collaboration entre 14 pays sur tout ce qui est partage de données de vie privée. Donc si les USA demandent une information, la Suède va plus gentillement accepter alors que la Suisse n'en aura rien à foutre. La Suède est bien pire au niveau des lois pour la vie privée.

La Suède est un moins bon pays vis à vis des droits sur la vie privée et donc sur les vpn. Proton reste meilleur sur ce point. Après pour le paiement y a que le monero en plus chez mullvad qui fait mieux. Ça reste les deux meilleurs vpn.

Salut, Proton VPN, et avec un compte proton t'as aussi accès à toute la suite privée et open-source Proton (le VPN est partiellement open-source au passage).

Abonné Proton Unlimited ici, plutôt pour remplacer les services mail et calendar Google à la base, marre de leur filer toute ma vie. J'utilise notamment Proton VPN quand je suis en voyage et que je dois me connecter sur un réseau Wifi type hotspot ou bien avec une clé bien connue. Je n'ai pas envie qu'un malin écoute mon trafic et essai de récupérer mes accès à mes applis. Normalement tout est en HTTPS maintenant mais on n'est jamais à l'abris d'une appli codée avec les pieds qui laisserait fuiter un cookie de session... Sinon ça marche bien aussi pour voir certains contenus geolock sur Youtube ou autre, acheter des clés de jeu en roupie (pas essayé depuis longtemps).

Faux, Proton font de la grosse merde et ils te mettent parfois sur des serveurs qui "font croire" qu'ils sont à un endroit X sans l'être. Des fois c'est littéralement pas du tout la même chose, genre tu te connectes sur un serveur "français" qui est en réalité en Allemagne, qui te donne des résultats de recherche allemands, en fait même [ip.me](http://ip.me) te dit que l'IP est Allemande.

NordVPN vend les données utilisateur je crois, fin j'aurais plus tendance à dire Proton VPN mais je n'ai pas étudié le sujet plus que ça ^^' (mais sur les trucs type VPN faut faire très gaffe y'a beaucoup de fuites de données)

Proton a été ma première option mais vu certaines takes de son PDG j'ai été refroidi, puis je suis passé chez Infomaniak, dont la suite est à 0.38€/mois, les mails sont très bien, la KSuite pour les documents est très bien et KDrive est une très bonne alternative à Google Drive. J'ai pas trouvé encore de bonne alternative Cloud pour Google Photos parce que j'aime bien leurs rétros, la recherche etc. J'ai le navigateur Vivaldi avec Proton VPN intégré en gratuit, ça me suffit quand j'en ai besoin, et Keepass XC pour les mots de passes.

Le reste je sais pas mais pour le VPN j'ai pas vu de différence que ce soit en terme de vitesse ou de stabilité avec nordvpn (j'ai eu des soucis avec les deux). Pour moi la différence de prix est pas justifiée.

Les plus connus c’est NordVPN, ProtonVPN et Surfshark. Proton a une version gratuite, Surfshark c’est le moins cher, et NordVPN est souvent vu comme le meilleur globalement.

Regarding smart located server, yes we do provide this service for locations where it's not feasible to really host physical server. So we do host the physical server in another country but make it appear as it's really geolocated in the desired country. This is very useful for accessing services that are available only in the desired country, however it is not recommended for torrenting as indeed, depending on the location of the server it might increase latency.

Both Mullvad and Proton are good options. It basically comes down to personal preference. Differences that may matter to you is that Proton has more servers and supports port forwarding. You should avoid Surfshark. It doesn't care about your privacy and their advertising strategy is very dishonest.

Honestly, at this point I still like proton for general purposes. I use their email because it has the largest base and it works fairly well. I still use their VPN because I’m not really trying to hide much over vpn anyway. Most people don’t realize that being logged into their gmail account while using a VPN will still result in them being able to be tracked across the web. I generally use the VPN so when I go to pornhub or elsewhere I won’t get blocked, also because being outside the US it’s often easier to access lots of stuff by just vpning to a server in the US. Quite a few of my local government pages are inaccessible otherwise. I also use their storage options because it’s not a super critical use case. I trust people I don’t want can’t access my storage and people I want to can and it’s not being spied on in the way google is. If you’re a journalist or someone with an exceptionally high threat model, definitely be aware of this kind is stuff and consider switching to mulvad, but this doesn’t change my own personal threat model at all. You're asking on a ProtonVPN forum, so we're going to say ProtonVPN. I really do believe they are very good on privacy by the way, but Mullvad fans will probably say the same.

Yeah I understood that it was piracy related. But I genuinely believe that if he wants to use Proton then he can do so. Even if there are better alternatives, clearly.

I've used and use both quite extensively (Mullvad a bit longer than ProtonVPN). My thoughts, if that's okay: 1. ProtonVPN's free option (which also comes with a free email address, or vice versa) is generous in terms of data usage each month. Yes, it will limit you to the US, Japan and the Netherlands servers, but you won't have a data cap each month (unlike, eg, Tunnelbear, though here I will admit that it's been many years regarding TBear, so I don't know if this still stands). You won't be able to torrent or stream for the most part (outside of MUBI), but it's a good way to gauge what you think in terms of quality before taking the plunge. 2. Their *paid* option does naturally have more country servers, more obfuscation options, more speed etc, and will be quite streamer and torrent friendly. Relatives of mine will want to watch Disney+, BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel4 when out of the UK and Europe, and I've had no trouble whatever in each case. Torrenting is also pretty good in terms of speed, in my experience. It will be more expensive than the €5 that Mullvad asks for, yes, but you're also getting an *ecosystem* \- VPN, email, storage, calendar, password manager (crypto wallet and AI as well, but I don't use either of the latter, but others may do), Proton's version of Google Docs, and so on. 3. For transparency purposes, there have been some faux pas regarding the way the head of Proton has communicated particular stances regarding the US government, to the point where he came across as being pro-Republican or pro-Trump to some. I tack to the left and I was concerned, but I put it down to a degree of bad judgement on his part, but he has also criticised that same administration, as well as similar ones in Europe, Canada, Australia, Asia etc. There was also a recent controversy over a far-right YouTuber from France being part of Proton's affiliation programme, and he name-checked the company. The initial responses from Proton did come across as general, yes, but they've also admitted that they should have been more active in vetting, and they cancelled his affiliation, if I recall. Proton has also actively given to and otherwise supported rights organisations and bodies in the Global North and South in regards to freedom of expression, privacy, anti-surveillance, so while the occasional statement may be clunky, they are also transparent and mean what they say in this regard. I will admit that I wasn't too happy at first with Proton's handling of the comments *and* the far-right YouTuber affiliation situation, and they can be clunky for the most part, but my view is that they try to do the right thing, and try to be balanced, but also transparent. Also, my experience in regards to their services has been pretty good thus far. I hope this helps in some way!

I've used it for almost exactly a year now and I really have no regrets or issues. It does exactly what is advertised. Fast speeds and is secure and Proton are pro-privacy. Certainly a top three VPN service, just can't really go wrong with it. And no, I am not affiliated with them - I am just a happy customer!

Better than Mullvad? No. As a VPN only, Mullvad is better but if you want the rest of Proton's offerings like email, cloud, etc., then ProtonVPN is a good deal. Better than SurfShark? Yes. In fact I highly suggest you don't get SurfShark at all.

Proton and Mullvad are comparable. Surfshark is not even in the planet and cannot be compared to these 2. Proton has more servers and allows 10 devices. You can get it on good deals for 2 years. Mullvad is slightly more private as it does not even require an email. But servers are not as large on quantity as proton. Only 6 devices are allowed. Both are excellent in privacy - no logs. Both accept cash. Mullvad you can buy prepaid voucher from Amazon. Proton you can get gift vouchers from proton shop online.

For combination of Privacy and Netflix, Proton is amongst the best - anonymity if you pay by cash.

I switched from mullvad to proton because of port forwarding. If that's not something you need, then I'd recommend sticking to mullvad, I found it to be more reliable and faster.

No VPN provider can guarantee that you can circumvent geo-blocks on streaming services because it is not in their control whatsoever. For browsing or P2P or anything else, Proton is great.

I don’t know who to trust at this point. I pay Proton hundreds of dollars a year for their services as a family subscriber. I chose them because they were the primary privacy choice for most of the services I was looking for. I have grown annoyed over time, the VPN client looks very different on windows than it does on Mac, and Mac doesn’t seem to be on a path to get updated. Drive on Mac is nearly useless, and doesn’t seem to be getting updated either. Pass doesn’t autofill on 50% or more of the sites I visit even after reporting them for years at this point. You have to be willing to give up a lot on the quality and usability side to have some privacy, but Proton’s lack of progress is really starting to make me question renewing when my 24mo plan renews this fall.

Proton VPN is fantastic. Mainly use it for qBit and making my own streaming service with Plex. No need to pay for Netflix, HBO, Apple TV, Disney, Paramount etc. Saves money. The web extension is nice for getting ad free YouTube/twitch and other stuff, since I usually have to connect to far away servers I can game and do other stuff without the latency. Password manager for shady sites and an email alias to keep everything secure. It's quite nice.

I mean yeah. I'm not gonna pay for every streaming service available when I can pay for a VPN and have my own streaming platform for free. Sure storage costs money, but big HDDs are cheap and last a long time. I have a little over 12TB of movies, shows and anime that I can access anytime and anywhere. The only downside is that I'm usually a day behind when a show drops on a streaming platform. It's fully automated aside from telling it what shows or movies to download, then it downloads and organizes automatically.

Proton is probably better if you want to use mainstream internet services - less captchas, VPN blocks and streaming works. Mullvad has the upper hand for privacy, but Proton isn't exactly bad. I have used both and would use both again.

ProtonVPN is far supreme in my opinion with their regional pricing and other bundled product tailored for my needs. I also liked the way they dealt with the recent controversy instead of simply saying "everyone has right to their own opinion" and tried to brush it off. ProtonVPN also has servers in areas where I want it to have. The only caveat ProtonVPN has is its browser extension which is shit compared to, lets say, Windscribe.

Ditto on not using Surfshark. I would recommend moving all services to Proton Unlimited so you have end-to-end encryption across the board for everything. Not just VPN. I used Fastmail for email for 25 years, legally based in Australia but with USA offices (where I am), and one of the reasons I gave them up this year was this law.

You have got to do your own homework on this one. There are many sites that do feature comparisons and ratings for each of these services. One's final choice is personal based on one's own needs, location, feature requirements and actual experience with the service. Read this subreddit enough and you will read many contrasting experiences with the service as with any other. I use ProtonVPN and it works great for me. I use Apple hardware and OS's. They are currently based in Switzerland. I appreciate their privacy policies that have been tested/audited regularly. My main attraction to Proton has been its email. When I subscribed to their service, the VPN came as part of it. It works well, so I have stuck with it. In the past, I used Nord, Express, Mullvad and AirVPN. They all worked well generally. When I wanted port-forwarding was when I found AirVPN (great for this) and stopped using it since ProtonVPN does offer port-forwarding as a feature.

This is a very good answer. I would just like to add that having your proton email connected to your proton vpn doesn't really matter as proton vpn has a proven no logs vpn, so what you do on the vpn can't be linked to your email, unless you are being reckless and telling people.

Mullvad is probably better in terms of making anonymous payments easier, but proton does take cash payments and crypto. But something people overlook is that even if you pay with identifiable methods (paypal/bank etc), protons entire infrastructure is setup so that anyone using their vpn cannot be identified. So if a copyright troll or government were to request data from proton, they would hand them a blank sheet of paper.

I’ve subscribed to Malwarebytes, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, ProtonVPN, and for the last 15 months, Surfshark. All 5 of the vendors have issues. That’s normal for tech companies. I know, I founded, built, and ran successful tech companies for 42 years. Surfshark is the best value VPN of the group. They do a good job of listening to their customers. They have a complete, solid product, and a value prop that positions Surfshark as a leader in a commoditized market. Get over it OP.

I'm a bit ignorant in regards to ports, so I thought it would work similar to when we open a port on the router, I would get a port assigned to me and that would be it. I guess that changing it once in a while isn't all that bad, especially since there are programs that automate this interaction. I can open my games normally with Mullvad. But when I'm using Proton and try to open Black Desert Online for example, the game doesn't load and freezes while starting up. Same thing with Star Citizen. Split tunneling the executables, be it from the game itself, the launcher or the anticheat doesn't work. I have to turn off ProtonVPN and try again so I can connect.

My motivation was getting the full Unlimited suite for a decent fee. That said, barely had any issues with their VPN. Mullvad is only a VPN product and perhaps more suitable for people not interested in geo-streaming but looking for strong privacy.

For what you described, Proton should be a solid ExpressVPN replacement, but I would test it for a month before committing long term. Stability is generally good, especially with WireGuard, but definitely enable the kill switch if you keep the VPN on 24/7 or use public college WiFi. Some school networks can block or interfere with VPNs, so test it there first. For torrenting, Proton is strong because paid plans support P2P servers and port forwarding. Yes, Plus should be the right option for just VPN. After the first year, VPN is pretty expensive compared to other also trusted choices tho. If you use Mail and Drive already (I guess as Free tier?) you might want to consider Unlimited instead. That one is great in value, ofc only if you think some of the extra features are worth it.

For privacy I would say Mullvad and IVPN is better because they don't need any information from you, and easier to buy anon subscriptions from them. Speed and latency is the best with Proton. Captchas and blocks are also frequent with Proton

In my opinion Mullvad just feels less of a corporation, it just works well and very simple, so I believe that's why people are using them + they also sell gift cards. Proton just has more features and keep growing, but also feels like they have too many things, especially when it doesn't work quite right.

I'm curious why everyone is saying Proton is bad for privacy? It's audited and zero logs so surely about the same? I know Proton Mail has had controversies but that's a different service and email is more open to law enforcement requests.

I use it ONLY for torrents, with port forwarding, You have to use something like quantum or qbportweaver with it to keep your forwarded port updated in your torrent client as that changes every-time you reconnect.

Bought in to the Proton world about a year ago. VPN is my biggest issue because if you want the kill switch on then you lose access to your local network. Turning it off every time and then turning back on is a pain as it needs to find another server. Some items on the local network will still not be available even after turning off the kill switch, in which case the VPN has to be turned off to get access. Using IOS in the car for Carplay, etc means that the kill switch has to be turned off. The repeated turning on and off is a huge killer for me. Thinking of Mulvad now.

dont forget the slow startup that takes forever to load the app on windows, while we wait for it to load, the device is leaking ip / no internet access if you have kill switch on. and the connect to random server when you make a new profile for a certain country, instead it forces you to connect to same server by fastest / you have to choose manually which one for that profile, which exist on old version but removed on the new app for no reasons.

Idk what country you live in. If the government doesn't care about torrenting then, practically, you don't need a VPN. As a rule of thumb though, it's good to have it even before the government decides to take action. Proton supports torrenting and generally gives good speed so it's good. Beware, only **paid** Proton provides safe torrenting, not the free version. As a general consumer, you might want to just hide as much as possible from trackers, ads etc. A VPN also helps you access content blocked in your country. Sometimes Japanese and/or US websites block you from accessing them from abroad. VPN sometimes indirectly helps you find better prices on plane tickets. There ate many uses

I find that I have to recreate my connection to Proton every few hours as the throughput feels throttled to almost nothing. Didn't have that problem with ExpressVPN ever on same devices and networks. I'm stopped for CloudFlare verification far more often too

I switched most of my stuff to Proton (Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Drive, etc) and I haven't regretted this descision once so far. Everything is fast, reliable and secure. I can recommend. Mullvad seems fine too, haven't used it though and Surfshark has a bad reputation, so I wouldnt get it, regardless of how cheap it is.

I can't speak for the privacy issues, but I have used surfshark in the past and would not recommend it at all. They seem to be going for the lowest possible price, which is fair enough if you offer good quality basics, but that's not what they were doing. Personally I encountered poor speeds and often issues with particular apps not connecting/dropping off (Android). Also not a very good app or customer service. I found the free version of Proton to be better than surfshark, but not being able to select a country is a big disadvantage so might not work for you.

I use it for Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar, so yeah!  For P2P it's awesome as well 😁 

You certainly can use ProtoVPN in lieu of ExpressVPN and it will work. I found Express a little more consistent for stable, high speed access through most locations when I tested them.

Can you not split tunnel IPs with the killswitch on? I don't use the killswitch but couldn't access my Proxmox server until I split tunneled and excluded the local IP for it.

It requires an email address and doesn't accept crypto for payments, so Proton may have some informations about you. While Mullvad doesn't want your email address or any other informations about you, and it accepts crypto, so you can be *truly* anonymous.

That's crazy did you do a test on each server after i upgraded to 5gig I was getting odd speeds but I found some servers in Texas can give me over 4000mbit up and down.

Mullvad is definitely better. Proton got so bad had to switch. Slow as hell and support does nothing.

Surfshark is cheap but you get what you pay for. I haven't used it in some years but the last time I had Surfshark it was laggy software, inconsistent speeds and occasional IP leaks while connected. I moved from Surfshark to Nord which was better but still had issues, then from Nord to Proton. I haven't had any issues with Proton so far except a couple minor outages. Mullvad is a solid option too if all you need is VPN, but it doesn't have port forwarding so it may affect torrenting efficiency if you do that. I prefer Proton because I pay for Unlimited and use all Proton suite except the Wallet.

Hmm I'm not saying that others don't have issues but it's not everyone. I have no issues on Windows with Proton use, no disconnects, no issues with P2P, no issues with port forwarding. This is the first time I see anything about widespread issues. I have all connection settings by default.

It does work without official support but GUI is also very limited. Proton is very good on Windows but tbh for now on Linux I'd recommend checking Windscribe because it's officially supported and has fully featured GUI app that is no different from Windows one.

Hello, 1. ProtonVPN is very stable. It’s a good choice if you want to connect your VPN 24 / 7. Since you want to use your VPN at college, they even offer a Stealth protocol which is designed to overcome VPN restrictions on some networks which tend to block standard VPN protocols. It uses TLS over Wireguard. They also offer Wireguard UDP and Wireguard TCP for extra reliability. 2. They offer many P2P servers, which makes torrenting (file sharing) faster, but that’s a feature I haven’t tested yet. 3. The VPN accelerator is designed to boost your VPN connection speeds to make it much faster. It does not increase the chances of leaks. 4. I didn’t really test the Adblocker yet, but I guess NetShield is pretty solid. It’s a DNS based filtering feature that blocks Ads, malicious websites, Trackers and Malware 5. For me, it works perfectly fine on my Android device. Speeds were great and it was very reliable.

Surfshark parent company is nordvpn. It does not have any open source tools. You can not generate plain Wireguard config. My tier list for vpn 1.self host wireguard (on anonymous vps provider) 2.mullvad 3.proton 4.amnezia If i'm going to pay for vpn subscription i choice proton because of their robust ecosystem. Other highly advertised vpn providers (like nordvpn,express..) are crap.

Mullvad and Proton are both top tier, SS is ok but owes its popularity to aggressive advertising (like Nord, Express, etc).

You can torrent on any of the networks marked with the P2P symbol (arrow loop). You dont necessarily need to tell your torrent client which port to use, but it will download much faster if you do. ProtonVPN will tell you which port is open once you turn it on in the settings. Then type that port into your client. Just did thus a couple days ago and it’s fantastic.

Asking on proton so course every proton user going to say it is and vice versa if you asked on Mullvad though they do different things. For example mullvad won't work with Netflix. Paying with that though wouldn't make your privacy any better. You need to test both out to your needs so yes the best advice is to try both. Mullvad is only 5 dollars a month depending on conversion rates. In the meantime if your not currently subscribed to Proton, as you said previously, then you could always use their free plan depending on needs/wants. My real question would be what do you want/need a VPN for and what do you prioritise more in said VPN.

Can drop speed here and there but overall Very good and does what it says on the tin, no 'real' big feature, least in my view. The only thing bugging me right now is that I can't pick just one server from the whole list of network servers in a location. I really liked that feature.

Currently, I use both. Mullvad is great for privacy, but horrible for streaming. Nearly all streaming services block Mullvad completely, and some other regular websites are not reachable since the Mullvad IP has been blocked for abusive use. With Proton, I never had similar issues. In addition, my experience shows that Proton is usually faster.

Bought 2-years of Proton a few weeks ago for $74. Been going great so far - no hiccups or issues. Have had it on 24/7, and it co-exists nicely on my laptop with Tailscale.

Linux Mint isn't default supported by Proton, Ubuntu and a few other flavours are.

Mine goes down only when I shutdoown.

Proton is pretty stable overall, port forwarding works on supported servers, accelerator doesn’t cause leaks, and the adblocker is decent but not as strong as a dedicated one

As my experience Proton improve the speed of connection, not slower, may cause some other issue, for further may contact support team , they would sort out the issue. If really issue with VPN.

Try free first, it is good for daily usage.

Try the free version first to see if their app works for you. Only buy into it if it works and you need features that are only available with the paid version. (If their app gives you problems, try a manual WireGuard configuration and app, using a Proton VPN server nearest to you.)  As for which plan to purchase, read their blogs about each plan and their pricing blog. Also, search online for reviews about Proton products and pricing. You can get the best deals as a new user, with a new identity. 

Trust me when I say they both have the same speeds. Also trust me when I say that there's only 2 VPN companies worth considering and Nord isn't one. ProtonVPN is best for the average user and has port forwarding. I would suggest this to most people. Mullvad is best for privacy reasons if you're crazy about that. I used Nord, then Mullvad, and now ProtonVPN. I bought 2 years of Proton. The others I had for a year each.

What would you like to know? They provide the same thing essentially unless you understand what you need. ProtonVPN provides port forwarding which is better for torrenting. It's 100% the reason I switched but I have been happy with the speeds. Mullvad has more obfuscation methods like adding more data to your packets to throw off AI surveillance. Mullvad also offers more methods of connecting in countries that have VPN's blocked by the government. I'm not saying they will work, but there are more methods to try.

Thanks for the headsup. The proton suite does look really good. But like I said cash is an issue. I am still in the process of writing and reading to everyones replies to get an opinion. But will keep that in mind.

It works for me. I have been able to switch to any country I have wanted so far without any issue on Netflix. Korea/Japan/UAE/Turkey/Singapore/Indonesia/US/Sweden.

That's where the browser extension shines. Can be used on any OS and supports split tunnelling by website domain.

Are you familiar with docker? If so, look into gluetun which is a VPN container that can attach to other containers and only route VPN through that specific service. For example, I use gluetun with quittorrent so only qbittoreent is running through proronvpn while the rest of my system doesn't. Its really nice and useful especially on a NAS or if you use a private internal VPN like netbird and want to avoid conflicts.

I agree with you. I'm a new customer, joined almost two weeks ago and since the beginning of June, I’ve been logging the average upload speed daily across 7 different NL P2P servers. I'm a Mac user with a 1 Gbps internet connection, and for port forwarding, I’m using WireGuard with manually saved server configurations. All the servers are located in the Netherlands, as they are closer to me and all support gigabit speeds. After monitoring upload performance and switching every 2–3 hours to the server with the lowest load (no Secure Core or TOR enabled), I’ve managed an average upload speed of just 12 MB/s, which is disappointing in my opinion. I've seen others report averages of 35 MB/s over a 3-day session. In my case, I often need to switch between 4–5 servers per day—otherwise, upload speeds drop to 1–2 MB/s. Download speeds peak at 40 MB/s, which is about 35% of my maximum download speed without the VPN. A few months ago, I briefly tested this VPN and remember reaching download speeds up to 70 MB/s, but that's no longer the case. I hope this is just a temporary infrastructure issue and not a permanent downgrade. Another highly anticipated improvement is port forwarding support for the Mac app, which I hope will allow connections to the fastest servers without the need to manually configure WireGuard or OpenVPN.

Kill switch basically means that any traffic not forwarded through vpn will be disabled, they need to implement something like firewall which windscribe has done(I haven't tested it extensively but it works). Kill switch also does not work with split tunneling, furthermore I have Windows and Android and windows doesn't even have allow lan traffic 🤣, customer requested it but I forgot if any ETA was given by Proton or not.

Yes its their anti abuse thing, there was someone with the same issue, and there is a workaround software who automatically fetch and change port in qbittorrent you can find this in this subreddit, I personally never used it.

Try stealth in proton and stealth, WStunnel in Windscribe still if you face issues then yours is not a normal case, I use streaming services and it works fine (sometimes you need to wait for a counter to develop when any streaming sites find or try something new),,,, If you still has issues then your case is a non-generic one, now you have to realy on protocols like VMess, VLESS, Shadowsocks, Trojan all of these are from Xray(Project X successor of V2Ray) which bypass China's firewall too most of time. You will find this proxies on Torguard.

Yep I have been using proton for 2+ years now and even in paid plan if you select free servers they are just faster, also this are the only VPN servers which while connected to server distance(ping)>125ms in different continent gives me ISP like speeds like I am not using vpn at all, free servers also unblocks streaming services like Netflix last time I checked. FREE SERVERS ARE JUST SUPERIOR...

Everything is fine here, the differences with and without VPN are minimal.

yeah, i can tell you, i have been using VPNs for years with killswitch and LAN access, I have never once had lan traffic leak to WAN just by the way IP/networking works, also the killswitch itself is blocking WAN traffic that isnt going through VPN as a safety net

yeah, it should be up to the user to be able to trust their own internal network, if downloading a file for example, what, i disconnect from the VPN to copy it to myu NAS? or to share to another PC, and the whilst on the VPN i lose access to shared media like plex etc? may make sense for some people, but not all imo

Yeah everyone has their own use cases, I found proton on router is the only way I can use it, then the router allows for lan access, and I don’t use google so everything else works good for me using Pia when not on my own router

I'm actually okay with it. For what I need the kill switch for, having it drop all LAN connectivity, while a nuclear option, means that I can be sure there will be no leakage of any kind of data that would get my ISP sending those nastygram emails that tell you you have displeased a major media company.

I used 5 ExpressVPN years ago and replaced it with Proton Unlimited, primarily for VPN. I decided I didn't need the other paid Proton services and downgraded to VPN Plus. I'm generally satisfied with ProtonVPN, but I do wish there was a more convenient way of connecting to the fastest server in my state, instead of a server halfway across the country.

While I have nothing against Mullvad (they are genuinely privacy-centric, unlike 99%+ of the thousands of other VPNs out there) I do notice that most of what people praise them for are things that Proton VPN has also done for years. You have always been able to pay for Proton with cash, crypto, or preloaded debit card. Or indeed nothing at all as the majority only need the free version.

The mullvad vpn app for Linux works much better than t Proton vpn on Linux. That's why I use mullvad

I switched from Nord recently and I have found Proton more stable for me. In addition, if I change cities/countries it seemed to better reflect that actual location much more accurately than Nord did after a while. I kept running into age restrictions or other issues with Nord even though I know that restriction shouldn't have come up based off the city/country. I think Nord was becoming crowded or something else has changed because it wasn't as good as when I first subscribed. I'll be staying on Proton for now unless it becomes as bad as Nord did in these areas. Also, the performance of the app and network is within \~5% of Nord for me, maybe even better, to a point I don't miss any of the "speed" I had with Nord.

I use protonvpn on my router so i can use a vpn on all my devices even on consoles or vr headsets which don`t have apps.

I too have came from a mixture of using Mullvad & Proton.  I keep coming back to IVPN and subscribing but with the other providers having more servers and features I do find myself switching back and forth testing each app.  I get far greater speeds with Proton and Mullvad and am really hoping for big changes from IVPN with more users signing up, although they do state it's a smaller server list etc so maybe I shouldn't expect too much generally. 

Switzerland, Netherlands, Luxembourg to name a few that I've tested.  I'm coming from Proton which probably isn't fair to compare with as they have many more servers with better capabilities but naturally I guess you go with the best product, although I keep paying and testing IVPN as I like it and want it to get better. 

For me it's refreshing to sign up and not have to input an email address, this one thing I like about it for sure and that's before accessing the actual product, this is also one of the big plusses using Mullvad.  Honestly though because I've come from Proton the app isn't as polished for me and the amount of servers isn't as big.  Hopefully a new influx of users can only be a good thing so team IVPN pushes for more improvements. 

i just wish i could connect in windows in less than a few minutes. support says it may be norton or MWB but even if it is, why does it take minutes to connect the VPN?

i would have loved to just use the vpn to protect my entire computer but thats not possible since i do want to whitelist my financial sites and i cannot do that on the windows app. i have to use the extensions then when i want to use qbittorret i turn on the windows app which whitelists firefox and chrome so i can then in turn white list some sites thru the extensions. do you see how confounded that is. if i could use the windows app with VPN on all the time. then white list sites so no matter what browser i use the sites would be whitelisted there but i have to have this added complication.

My biggest complaint is that with the windows app you cannot add by website you need to use the IP address and who can figure out the IP address of some of these financial institutions etc. Also the window app sometimes takes forever to connect I love how I can bind qbitorrent and also the Firefox and chrome add-ons are instant on or off and very easy to add something to a bypass list so I don't know why they can't do this with the windows app

I used Nord at the start 8 months ago and changed to Proton paid. Proton is the real deal and i really like Net Shield on all devices which Nord did not have. Occasionally you have to change VPN as it has an outage and then your away again. Just do it

I don't have experiences with other VPN providers, I just use it because it's included in my plan. But lot of websites don't load images or I'm blocked completely, when using it. Sometimes switching country helps. Pretty annoying.

Polls do not work on old reddot. A fair number of people still use it. I pay for and use both VPNs. I pay Proton with CC, Mullvad with Amazon Mullvad voucher card. If you use BitTorrent or any P2P game, Mullvad does not have port forwarding, Proton does.

Leave the protocol on Smart (automatic), try changing between protocols only if you have connection issues. NetShield is fine, try turning it off or set it to not block ads if you run into issues loading certain websites, apps etc. Kill Switch really depends on your threat model.

Different solutions for different threat models. Mullvad will offer the best protection against a state actor directly attacking your data. Proton is more than enough to deal with passive collection and offers the best solution for breaking geo-locks as well as some of the best speed from a well-trusted and audited provider.

I have both. I use proton more than mullvad because I have my devices auto connect to a server and I want to be able to watch streaming and I get more detections with mullvad than proton I’m based in Sweden/Norway

It's pretty stable for me and my devices, I'm happy with it and prefer it over Express VPN.

It's stable enough with an infrastructure decent enough to pretty much make me forget that I'm on a VPN. Been a customer since '18 or so (for email at least, I don't recall if VPN was a thing back then). One of the few companies I have been able to trust for almost a decade. Should note that I'm on the 12/mo plan whatever it was called.

If you need port forwarding go with Airvpn. They allow you to pick your port and it remains static, whereas Proton gives you a random port on startup so you need a bunch of scripts to manage it.

As long as you don't need port forwarding Mullvad is better and more anonymous. Proton has handed over IP details of a user of it's email service which has led to successful arrests. They're also caught up in recent lawsuits from Canal+ (an EU Netflix more or less) and are being forced to shape traffic of their users. Proton also doesn't let you start paying for your account in any anonymous form of currency. You can only pay with crypto to *add time to your account, not start your account.* They also ask for an email to register which can be identifying... Mullvad does not.

Mulvad has 50 locations that all have actual servers. So the extent of actual server locations for proton and mulvad is almost the same.

A lot of the servers are not physically located in the countries they advertise. They are merely given an IP that is supposed to be connected to that country, which may or may not work (as in, websites/servers you connect to may or may not consider the IP to be from that country). This is not unique to proton, many (most?) vpns do it. And it usually concerns only the more "obscure" countries that other vpns do not show as options. But some eg mullvad (afaik) do not do that, which is why people may say "bad server coverage". You may or may not consider this an issue, fake advertising or whatever. Personally I don't mind, as it does not concern my use cases. Eg for stuff like geoblocking it is better to have an option to connect to a certain country even through those servers, even if occasionally you have to change the specific server to find another that actually works. The alternative is to just not have such an option at all. But it is not completely accurate to consider this as "far better coverage" either. Otherwise I am not sure there is any other issue, a server is a machine and each one should serve a different IP, so I assume in terms of amount of IP you can select from there is a big range.

I can't buy VPN Plus today, and then in two months decide I also want Mail Plus and buy that too? I did another speed test now, without any VPN. I got 99,24 Mbit/s download, 111,68 Mbit/s upload and 4,24 ms latency. And then another test using a NordVPN server in Netherlands. I got 92,64 Mbit/s download, 83,74 Mbit/s upload, and 66,21 ms latency. So it's very similar to what I got with Proton VPN for free. Latency is not too bad, and I don't play games, so it doesn't matter much to me. I did not know that a free version of Proton VPN is included with each account. I installed it now and the app works flawlessly. Unlike NordVPN and Surfshark, both of which crash on my system for some reason, since several versions back, due to some Nvidia driver conflict that support is unable to help with and I can't figure it out – it probably requires a Windows reinstall. I did a Proton VPN speed test now against a domestic test server, using a national broadband test service (provided by our domain registry). I got 91,82 Mbit/s download, 80,84 Mbit/s upload, and 47,82 ms latency. It went through Netherlands, about 1000 km away. Not bad at all. I have a 100/100 Mbps fiber service.

Mullvad is the second option I am considering. Proton VPN is 39% more expensive than Mullvad for 12 months. But my current provider, NordVPN, is 28% more expensive than Proton VPN for 12 months. I only compared regular prices, no discounts. Although, I usually renew NordVPN at half the price for a 24 month subscription. They often have discounts that existing customers can take advantage of, and they will sometimes make you an offer if you contact support or if your subscription has already run out. Any thoughts on NymVPN? It's a new provider I think, that builds on blockchain technology. I never heard of it until yesterday, so I don't know much about it.

hellooo. Have you seen the huuuge list of protonvpn servers? I think they have about 5000 just for the US. Proton has more free servers than ivpn and mullvad combined servers. So yeah mullvad and ivpn couldn't afford having their IPs being constantly blacklisted and their network speed reduced by people who abuse the service. And the irony is that many of those "customers" were former protonvpn users who migrated to "greener pastures" because protons ips had already been abused and blocked. Now these other services only use bare metal servers. Proton on other hand shits servers by the thousands. Some in fancy and exotic locations so yeah draw your own conclusion. The point being users have a huge amount of options and ips so abuses are less likely to impact everyone.

You're not missing anything ,it's been hit and miss with paramount+ and disney+(at least france) and some other streaming services, it's actually frustrating .

I have a 1GB connection and, over ethernet, both VPNs had pretty consistent speeds were in the mid 800. I looked at Mullavad and the speed dropped to 400. I opted for Proton because of its consistent speeds, no drop-outs and better ad and tracker blocking.

Don’t forget that Proton has a student discount!! My suggestions: For privacy - Mullvad (a bit slower but a great company with a proven record. Also based in Sweden which is great for privacy). They have a nice pricing model. For general use and speed - Proton. I use proton myself due to the reliable speeds. I found Mullvad to be slow sometimes, and it was more difficult to find a fast server in general.

Note that it is only valid for one year, then it renews at the regular price with no option to use a student discount again. A shady and stupid pricing scheme if you ask me… I mean, most people study multiple years.

i usally get what my internet gets without vpn is about 350mbps to 500mbps and vpn would still get around 350mbps to 400mbps, but wow its gottens so shit to the point i have to reconnect every 10 minutes and also the captchas are so annoying bro its getting out of hand

Good to know re the Caribbean. I’m in an area that has generally good coverage, but I find that whenever I’m in a low signal area, my internet performs better with the VPN on than off. 

I love ProtonVPN and I use it most of the time in my laptop and mobile devices as the primary VPN. However I still keep and pay for NordVPN which I use mainly for streaming, because even when Proton has improved a lot in this regard, NordVPN is still much better in some streaming platforms (and it is not that expensive on the 2 year plan). Not sure about ExpressVPN but I guess it depends on your needs. As a VPN service for safety and privacy, ProtonVPN is already very good and as I've said, it is my primary service. For streaming, most of the time NordVPN works better (faster and more reliable).

As a VPN for general purposes, ProtonVPN is very good. For streaming, unfortunately more and more streaming providers are detecting now and blocking or if not throttling certain live events (Disney+) or shows that aren’t available in the country of your VPN connection (Netflix), that’s been my recent experience (in the past it worked great). Not sure if this is the same with ExpressVPN (it might be) so don’t expect it to work very well in those use cases. I also pay for NordVPN and same recent experience (won’t renew NordVPN, will only keep Proton).

I use both, proton has good value plans if you need a vpn, storage, mail, calendar password manager but I found express was better for blocking ads on twitch and faster. Take it as you will everyone has different experiences depending on their configurations

Yeah, might have been your post that guided me then. It was really puzzling to see speed tanking totally down with something like 10 connections and DHT disabled. Been using many different VPNs and never experienced anything similar. To someone new it seemed there was quite a lot speed related posts with Proton and not very many solutions. I hope this helps someone. And yeah, the difference was huge for me, like from choppy kilobytes to steady megabytes. Torrent basically stalled with any number of uTP connections. BTW, it wasn't necessary to restart qB, just pause torrents and change protocol.

I also had pretty bad speed drops with Proton and probably found the same posting that you did. Tried disabling DHT, lower number of connections, etc. No change. Then I tried using only TCP instead of default TCP/uTP and voilà, the speed was stable now. Did some additional testing with large popular torrent with many different clients changing between the protocols and it confirmed the findings, TCP was working steadily while uTP was causing huge speed fluctuations. I don't know is it just me with that drastic change, but there was some discussion that TCP worked better for others too.

No, Windows. I use inverted split tunneling to be able to pass only qB traffic through VPN. I guess they haven't added that feature to Linux yet.

I have been using WG UDP as it's the only protocol to be able to utilize whole bandwidth and in general it's been pretty solid when using TCP in qB. There's still slight hiccups when contacting the swarm and opening new connections, which I suppose goes down to DHT is still using UDP but it's not that noticeable and stabilizes after that. I don't have that much experience outside qB as I use VPN only for torrenting, but wouldn't be surprised if other apps could trigger this same behavior as well. It could be problem, if you use VPN system wide.

For me it was the same for UL and DL, both had quite speed and more importantly stability upgrade. One thing to add might be that I noticed these speed drops with [speedtest.net](http://speedtest.net) too. The way I tested this was I enabled inverse split tunneling and added Edge and qB there and when these speed drops occurred, I tested the connection with browser that was using VPN and browser that wasn't. Was quite telling to see what happened to whole VPN connection. Gives some solid numbers how much speed actually drops.

Yeah, it was on. I don't think with public torrents DHT off is an option as you said. It's been working pretty well for weeks now and for someone that was coming from Mullvad with basically zero speed fluctuations seeing these drops would have been kinda deal breaker.

Sorry I've just seen this, to answer your question, I usually don't have any problems signing up to streaming services in other locations, **unless** they require local payment methods, that's usually when the gig is up in my case. But otherwise, as long as you're on a P2P server, it'll work just fine and should be around 80% of your normal speed.

Are you on a free or paid plan? I think proton's free servers are the best out there bar none, and if you're paying, you should have access to high speed servers. For example, I am on a 1Gbps connection and my download speed only loses \~10% when proton VPN is on (paid plan). One thing for sure is that surfshark is owned by the same company that owns nordvpn, which i think is a little shady and there have been reports that user data is being sold by this company, so I would advise against it.

I switched from ExpressVPN to ProtonVPN and it works great. No problems whatsoever on any of my devices. Even my UDM-Pro uses ProtonVPN. I got Proton Unlimited as it was nearly the same price as ExpressVPN but now I also have Proton Mail with it.

I was with Protonvpn from day of release and everything was good until I moved from Linux to Mac and then I had nothing but problems - dropped connections needing full reboot to access the internet again, I moved to Mullvad and never really got on with it I need custom dns with isn’t just a ip address and the speeds where superb then poor then superb. Personal but I didn’t like the app design. So I moved again and currently use Ivpn speeds are solid and I get full custom dns controls. I prefer the app design and so far everything seems good. End of the day the best is what works best for you today and tomorrow well this could be a different provider or service. Don’t lock yourself in to 1 provider. proton is becoming Google once you’re there you jump on unlimited and before you blink it’s very hard to move away as everything is with them. This happened to me dropping the vpn meant dropping to mail plus or pass plus but couldn’t have both.

I use them both actually! I find the use cases are very different. My router allows me to split tunnel multiple VPNs so I have a Mullvad tunnel, Proton Tunnel, and a "No VPN" Tunnel. Basically I have a proton tunnel with port forwarding for my NAS, a Mullvad tunnel for basically everything, and a No VPN tunnel for my work devices. Also a second Mullvad tunnel for IoT devices.

The only ones they offer in my country are awful slow. Other countries nearby sometimes give recommendations in different languages or have bans. I just use it only for my server for torrenting, unfortunate it’s unusable for me for personal use.

NordVPN is definitely moving in the right direction, especially with the server infrastructure upgrades and continued focus on privacy and security. One thing I’d really like to see next, though, is a **Proton VPN–style Secure Core implementation for Double VPN**. Rather than simply routing traffic through two standard VPN servers, it would be great to have an option where the **first/entry server is located in a carefully selected high-security, privacy-focused jurisdiction and the second server handles the exit connection**. Essentially, a more hardened Double VPN architecture where the entry server provides an additional layer of protection against server compromise, network surveillance, or jurisdictional concerns. **Is NordVPN considering something along these lines for a future Double VPN/Secure Core-type feature?**

What Mullvad "drama"? I was thinking to switch to them when my Proton sub is up due to Proton just being horrible overall.

That is still possible if you mean what I think you mean, on the mobile version you can press the 3 dots on a country and it will list the servers on that country. Sorry in case you already knew that.

I was using hotspotshield premium for a couple of years now until it started to give me issues especially in discord. I tried nordvpn and surfshark, but both had been bad for me (ie. I couldn't use the split vpn function (even after setting it up and talking to their support, the issue was not resolved) and couldn't even open google on my browser with vpn on) proton vpn is so much better than all the others i tried. 1. i can choose to 'not connect' to certain countries. Which helps me avoid connecting through my own country as its the one i'm trying to avoid, but still logs me through the fastest country after my own. 2. i can choose so that it only uses vpn with discord, as opposed to me listing every other program i don't wanna use vpn with. (i need vpn to be able to use discord) 3. the speed is really good, the control i have over what i want vpn to do is really detailed. with hotspot shield I kept having an RTC connection issue, but i have never had that with proton so far. It works good on my mobile too. overall, out of all my experiences with vpns, proton vpn took the crown for me.

I tried PIA and Surfshark before switching to Proton. Most stable one I've used. Works fine for me.

I became a user when they still had the green original logo, it's fascinating to look back and realize how far they've come. I can highly recommend them.

I use the free version of ProtonVPN. It's the only free VPN I know of without any monthly data limits. It also doesn't require you to input any real identifying information to create an account. I set mine up using a disposable burner email from AtomicMail and fake personal information. The main downside is that the free version doesn't let you select which country you want to use a server in. It just selects the most easily available one that uses up the least of their resources. So if you wanted to connect through another country to get around geoblocking and it decides to connect you to a server within the same country you're in, then oh well no geoblocked content for you. Its also normally considered pretty slow on the free plan. But that doesn't really matter to me because I'm not doing any online gaming.

I just started using Proton a couple days ago. What I don’t like, so far, is the Kill Switch will not allow me access to LAN devices like other computers and NAS on my network. Didn’t have that problem with Nord or Mullvad.

I have it on pretty much non-stop on my phone and laptop, i barely notice it, which is a win in my books. Streaming works fine, torrenting works great, killswitch & split tunnelling doing what they're supposed to as well, speeds are good. You definitely run into captchas and Cloudflare checks but that's to be expected. It's a great product, i'm happy with it.

Im glad you said it’s the best because I took a chance on PROTON. I’ve been reading and searching for hours now but I’m trying to learn about VPN and maximizing my privacy. I have the paid version or proton vpn and mail. It’s a lot to take in but so far I have wireguard and kill switch on. There’s also wire guard TCP? and stealth is primarily used to bypass sites that blocks VPNS. still trying to understand DNS, LAN, and NAT lol. Also, what’s up with view logs or usage statistics. It looks sus.

Proton VPN is free and they’re pretty good for a free service, in terms of speeds and reliability. But I would strongly advise against paying for it.

i hate it. Whenever my iphone, ipad or macbook hang without internet, the solution is 99.9% of the time to disconnect from the datacenter that connected automatically in the background. The datacenter’s almost aways at like 40% capacity. I’ve just taken to quitting the VPN, and may as well just uninstall it for all the value it has presented.

I switched from PIA a few mos ago. Speed is much better but in their chromecast app there's no way to pick the server city; you can only pick the country.

ProtonVPN free is something I tried from an Airport over in Europe once before I was in the ecosystem. I was shocked at how well it worked. As I moved to using Proton Mail, I went for family and it works great! I rarely have issues. I think the biggest concern with it is how saturated servers get quickly. Sometimes I need to switch servers. Other than that, I am very pleased.

I just use their browser extension because the Windows desktop app blocks a bunch of apps causing me to have to split tunnel them as excluded from the VPN. It’s just easier to use the extension. It’s also easier to exclude websites that don’t work from the VPN through the extension. 

if you're in a country that bans vpns very often it's a hard pass, on the windows app you don't have access to all the servers they advertise, on ios app you do. i don't know about other platforms. they don't offer ikev2 and openvpn on ios but they do offer ovpn on windows. ikev2 was something i could easily use and was very efficent for me so you can say i'm a little mad. though i wouldn't recommend a vpn service where they don't give full access to the server list and manual connection to all their protocols. proton does offer ovpn and wireguard manual. but even with that i won't be resubscribing when my subscription ends.

I have used it and been satisfied with it for a couple of years. The price is reasaonable for the value that it provides. I use it on an "as needed" basis, I don't use it all the time. I use it on my macbooks and my iphones.

Well I thought I'd only use it on my torrent server... I do but I also have it turn on when i boot up my main pc too... And other than waiting for it to connect at startup, I forget it's even there. Which is to say it's amazing because it doesn't even feel like you're using one.

I started out a free user about a year ago and took the plunge for a year subscription during their Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale. It’s been worth it. Being able to choose the country/state I want for streaming purposes or buying tickets is great. Not to mention the device wide Adblock. I know it’s blocking malware and trackers well too because I’ve gotten significantly less robo calls from scammers since using it. Also nice to forward gmail to the proton email account you get access to. Only complaint I have is sometimes it needs to be manually disable and activated again when switching from WiFi to cellular but that’s a minor gripe. I run it basically 24/7.

I am in China right now. I bought the 1 month World Cup promotion to use in China. But the connection is very weak and it can’t hold a connection. Dropping and reconnecting constantly. Mullvad and my own Tailscale setup works way better. I have not used it outside of China.

The only issue I have is that there are no favourites/recently used on the Apple TV app, aside from that it’s been solid.

I'm a new user and so far so good. Haven't had any complaints one month in. I mainly use it with the wifi at work for both my phone and gaming handheld.

I've been with proton for years, rarely had issues, and the customer support is pretty helpful most of the time.

I tried the free version for a bit, mostly because I needed to verify that it worked on my MacBook. I was previously trying out Mozilla VPN (no free trial, bought an annual plan) and was disappointed to find it would not work on my Mac. Mozilla VPN worked on my Android phone. I worked with Mozilla VPN support, tried a few things to help them troubleshoot, and they still had no solution. I cancelled Mozilla VPN and signed up for Proton VPN this year. So far so good, working on both Andoid phone and Mac laptop. I believe my needs are very basic and not as "fancy" as most other people. I just use it for a little more privacy when on open wifi networks (cafes, libraries, hotels, etc). I haven't noticed loss of speed, but again, I'm not doing anything that intense. The main problem I run into is some websites not happy with VPN enabled. Yelp is one of them. Proton VPN often goes on sale. They currently have a 70% off promotion on a 2-year plan, which comes out to $2.99/month. .

No, I second this. I bought 2 months of Proton to check my options outside of mullvad, but the thing kept disconnecting every 4 minutes on my phone. Literally tried every troubleshooting thing, but it was still unstable as hell. Well, ok, phone client sucks, maybe it'll work for my GlueTUN container? No. Just constant disconnects. While I think mullvad is slightly slower, it is rock solid stable. I'd rather have that than to check my notification bar every 10 seconds like a schizophrenic, hoping proton didn't just leak my IP.

Im using it on my vpn router via openvpn for all my devices except the tv, I use the app on the tv directly with split tunnelling for certain apps. Works as advertised & no complaints.

I only use the Proton vpn and i like it. Very simple and easy to use and it Just works. If you can wait, normaly on black friday the have very low prices and you can save some money

Very good And if you have a NAS, proton had a option to alaways see local device even with VPN on. Only bug I had is with the protocol sytem; - Wireguard is lock to max 15mo/s - I use OpenVPN bu sometimes it bug and lock to also 15mo/s ( need deco/reco) And the loss 2Go/s internet to 600mo/s Huge loss but still correct Except that very happy

Depends, are you torrenting. If so, do you use gluetun? And if you do, expect some issues along the way. Other than that, docker and other third party apps (like rclone for proton drive) struggle at times, but proton on its own (meaning their apps) works amazingly well.

Proton started accepting crypto for payment as far back as 2022 which is when I renewed my 2 year subscription and paid in BTC. I would have preferred paying in XMR however and BTC was only option.

I have them both. I've found that Proton was slower which made me mad, so I've started with Mullvad and it's been pretty good.

I am paying for ProtonVPN (as part of the general Proton suite) and it does work very well for streaming and all sorts of other "normal" stuff. However, last year I visited China and discovered that it does not work through the "Great Firewall". Mullvad VPN did, though, without any problems. So if you want to use a VPN to circumvent Internet censorship, Mullvad might be a better choice.

I haven't been able to get any of the Italian streaming apps I watch to work with Mullvad (I'm based in the UK for the record), so I use Proton. I guess it's a case of making a decision based on what you prioritise

I've been a ProtonVPN user since the early days. I run Linux Mint. I have not, do not now, nor ever will use a 3rd party 'app' for connecting to the VPN - I set up a simple WireGuard under Mint's Network Manager ( Stupid simple process - a child could do it ), and I split-route by ASN using a very simple script for those select few sites and services that specifically block VPNs. I torrent like a madman, never have any issues with the VPN itself on that front, and speeds? Mint is so similar that installing protonvpn is almost indistinguishable from Ubuntu. You just have to make sure you don't get Gnomed...

I’m using proton on Linux mint. The gui is missing some functionality for extra useful features but if you don’t need them then it shouldn’t matter. If you do need those features, you’ll need to learn how to use bash, but it’s pretty simple copy and paste from google searches. Torrenting works find with it but you gotta configure port forwarding and assign whatever port it gives you to your torrenting client. Depending on how many seeds for your torrents your speeds may vary. I’ve had full sized movies download in less than 15 minutes and some get stuck due to no/low seeds. Using a vpn will never increase your speeds, only maintain speed or lower the speed (unless your isp throttles certain types of traffic which would be weird and problematic in its own rite). I use proton

I can't decide if I'm lazy or not but I always just copy the port in the UI and update it in Qbt. I don't want to use another app to do that. Wish Qbt could figure it out automatically somehow.

Ive used it on my pc for years and recently added it to my router. It is pretty stable overall. Ive had a few hiccups but changed when I went from TCP to UDP. Overall my experience has been solid. 4/5.

I have Proton VPN on my router. Runs 24/7, very infrequent issues.

It runs perfectly on android even in china with the free plan.i mostly connect under campus network,and it works.

But it doesn't work over cellular connections.....

And if you have a chance, you connect to one of the VPN servers with your own account and send timed pings every second or two. This isn't being done by humaaaans. The software isn't particularly difficult to write. If you have one capture with both the in and out, you can find what you want fairly quickly even with Wireshark. And there are always quieter periods in traffic, even just a couple of seconds and BINGO you have found your correlation and the feds are off looking more closely at someone, somewhere.

Yea with dozens and dozens of "servers" for different countries in one datacenter in France or Singapore or Miami. It only fools some websites. Websites still know they are VPNs, at least one of the Geolocation providers isn't fooled by this - they measure latency from many locations to find the location of an IP Address, and it certainly doesn't fool Alphabet or Meta.

No, it does nothing for either of those. Correlation attacks are done upstream of the VPN servers, usually at the ISP. All you need is the "in" and "out" traffic for all the "servers" at a location. I have had to do this to find malware on our very large corporate network.

The 'in' traffic is now shared among many other servers, (like you said US-NY#732 through #759 have the same "in" IP address), resulting in a significant larger pool of IP addresses, thus making timing/correlation attacks harder.

Proton people, if you happen to read this, here's a great sales idea: allow users to purchase custom subscriptions, for example: VPN Plus + Proton Mail Plus, but no Pass nor Drive. Users should also be able to add services without interrupting current plans. Price Custom plans a tad less than Unlimited ones, or heck, higher if you add a few perks.

I have tried abotu 10 different ways to 'make P2P work' on ProtonVPN. I am on a paid plan, and have tried 10 different country P2P servers. Nothing. The second I switch Proton off and Nord on - instantly everything works. Basically you don't offer P2P based on my experience. I asked a friend for help and he said 'Oh no ProtonVPN is great in theory but P2P never works'. What is going on guys? I want to use your service. I'm PAYING to use your service. Depends on where you are , North America NordVPN , Europe Proton. My personnal xp using Canadian Servers, NordVPN is faster. But I switched to Proton, in part because I am switching everything to self-hosted or Proton ecosystem. There has been reports that NordVPN updating policy about co-operation with law enforcement ( Read Wikipedia ). I got away from NordVPN

With regards to privacy (and speed, in my personal experience) ProtonVPN is insurmountable by all else on the market. I have quite literally tried all known brands over the past 10 years and ProtonVPN comes up trumps! Might be an idea to disable the usage and crash reports though. It's opt out, not opt in. Keeps them honest ;) !

proton vpn does not disconnect on android 11, privado is also good, adguard vpn disconnects, seed4 me rarely needs to be set so it does not disconnect.

First of all VPNs do not provide anonymity. Both are excellent. I suggest you try both, both provide refunds if you are not satisfied. Another great VPN is IVPN.

Protonvpn. I've tried other vpns kind of like surfshark and I encountered connection issues. plus protonvpn doesn't force you to subscribe and pay monthly just to use basic features

In which case, go for the free option of Proton. You can turn it on and it’ll randomly choose an international server. You can also utilise the other free features of Proton. Proton Pass also has a free option. This way, you can upgrade to paid later and retain the same setup. Once you start incorporating mail aliases and proton pass with proton Mail, it’s hard to go back. It just works really well. I used to have SurfShark, but let that go in favour of Proton. I found the marketing aggressive, and didn’t have a lot of faith in full privacy. You get what you pay for. The free Proton option is a cut down trial of the products, but would be sufficient for your needs 😉

Yeah, I'd avoid SurfShark and all the rest of what I call "marketing privacy VPNs" as opposed to actual privacy VPNs. At the moment, the leaders in the space of actual privacy VPNs are Mullvad, IVPN, and Proton. Every other "big name" VPN out there is marketing nonsense and not real privacy.

I've been using both Mullvad (~5 years) and Proton (~2 years). TL;DR - Proton for torrenting because of port forwarding. Mullvad for privacy. For your needs it sounds like Proton is the way forward. Proton as a company is a little weird and has some red flags for me, and has from their beginning. I use their entire suite of tools (except AI) and they have been getting better. But I'm aware they could turn out to be more marketing than substance. However, that results in some popular features like port forwarding. Mullvad does VPN (and recently a FF based privacy focused browser). They are privacy advocates. They are not piracy advocates. They do not fine-tune their product for these purposes. They do it for privacy. Port forwarding is a good example - they've had it and turned it off due to abuse. Also, clear pricing, better auditing reports, more standard adoption of protocol standards, etc. Speed wise - I find Proton unreliable and fluctuating wildly compared with Mullvad which sometimes has problems as well, but less often.

Proton offers a robust suite of tools; VPN, 500 gigs cloud drive storage, encrypted email, password manager, etc. Ive had 'proton unlimited' for years now, so I pay $190 bucks for two years, at a time for everything. Mullvad just offers VPN service. Its good, its private and you can pay annonymously, but I like paying for an alternative to Gmail, so I get the premium proton package.

proton is based in swiss, which means it has one of the most strictest privacy laws in the world. so yeah, i think proton vpn is very privacy focused.

I am not streaming, but I find that for many purposes my ProtonVPN IP's are blocked. Finally gave up and went back to my dedicated IP on SurfShark.

Well yeah but it doesn't help with other things like torrenting or other apps that might cause IP leaks. Coincidentally Brave has an in-browser torrent client so I use that for downloads but it's much less robust than a proper client

i had some problem with proton getting a different port everytime i restart and i havent found a simple workaround on how to fix it (so i dont have to cange the port manually in qbit). Am i missing something / doing something wrong, or how do other people manage it?

Found this out today. It’s a deal breaker for me. Does NordVPN allow the kill switch and LAN access too or is it just PIA? I’m not worried about the auto renew either, it can just be turned off.

While proton VPN is the absolute best out of the bunch, no doubt about that. It still suffers from typical VPN issues in 2025, If i connect to any proxy within my country, My ISP Instantly flags it and throttles my connection , making it un usable. If i connect to nearby countries, i am able to stay for an hour or 2 before my ISP throttles my connection again, Even if that isn't a problem, almost all sites i visit, including the ones that were propped up across all the VPN ads, streaming services like netflix, disney plus etc etc, even niche sites have anti VPN measures. If somehow, none of that is a problem, my connection is still slowed down too much. All of this has made me cancel my proton VPN subscription that i had running for 2 years. Again i don't mean to say this is a proton only problem or that other VPNs are better, its just that VPNs in general in 2025 aren't as useful as they used to be
