Brompton Electric C Line

r/Brompton · What broke in 10 months of normal daily use... Trying to get the refund 🤦 I was very happy with my 2022 electric C line when I purchased it, having previously ridden my 2013 Brompton converted with a Swytch kit. Note: “was”. Problems I’ve had, in loose chronology: \* broken 3way shifter after \~6 months. Not covered under warranty, whole brake/shifter/bell replaced at my cost. \* rear rim worn through after \~10 months. Ok, I guess it’s a wearing part, but my previous rims lasted 3yrs plus. \* electric motor bearing wore out within 18months. Extensive back and forth with Brompton - they stated it is a “normal wearing part”, I argued “if it integrated with the electrics as a singular replacement part, then the whole motor has failed”. They accused me of pressure washing - I don’t own a pressure washer. They replaced the motor as a “goodwill gesture”. \* Rear triangle hinge replaced after 18 months. Again, a wearing part, but again I’ve only done it once on my 2013 Brompton. \* Battery flaw after 22 months. Wouldn’t charge except on the 4A fast charger. Told bike shop, battery very quietly replaced by Brompton for a new one. \* Second rear rim worn through after \~22 months. \* Sturmey Archer hub gear writtten off as unserviceable after 26 months. Replaced at my own cost. Again, defer to my 2013 Brompton which is still on its original hub. All of this on a bike which has yet to pass 5000km. It’s not a great advert, gotta be honest. I wonder if the gen 2 electric lines are more reliable.

r/Brompton · Electric G-Line vs C-Line If you don't carry it often, a larger wheel diameter is definitely preferable. For carrying it on public transport, Line C is more suitable.

r/Brompton · 12 Speed C-Line for hilly commute? I always say more gears is better there's literally no downsides, the electric C line I presume you mean the previous gen? Isn't half baked per se and it's fairly reliable it's just an imperfect system but realistically it works fine, the main advantage of the older systems is you can run that as 12 speed whereas the new one your limited to 4. Bromptons are solid dependable little bikes and for the most part are built like tanks, however they will suffer if not taken care of especially the drivetrains which aren't cheap to replace when they wear out which can happen very quickly if it's left to accumulate road grime. As to longer rides, that's perfectly doable on a Brompton people go on tours with them. They can be remarkably comfy if your intention is longer rides more often pending your fitness id probably go with the none electric version however as peddling an Ebike with a run down battery is no fun.
r/Brompton · Changing chainring on 12-Speed Brompton Electric C Line Realistically there should be no reason to change it as your got an electric Brompton and it will be able to handle most hills your throw at it. If you want to however it's a 5 minute job just swap out the chainring and shorten the chain it's not at all complicated.
r/Brompton · 12 Speed C-Line for hilly commute? So in regards to your comments it's a solid system the initial teething problems were sorted out years ago and the current system works fine it's still a little messy which the new system rectifies and cleans up but it works fine. The fact is with all ebikes they still break so you take the risk. The internal hub is fine you don't need to take it apart Brompton themselves don't even take them apart as long as it's kept in adjustment which is dead simple it will just go and go. The primary drivetrain issues are the chain, sprockets and derrailieur, they are very close to the ground so pick up a lot of road gunk. There's zero need to take anything apart just need to run a chain cleaner on it and it should be fine.
r/Brompton · 12 Speed C-Line for hilly commute? Hope it goes well, avoid big pot holes they are the nemesis of a Brompton.

r/Brompton · e-Motiq C-line (4speed) vs Electric C-line (12 speed) And yet. I find the C-line electric 12 speed front motor… Trouble free, excellent on its own without battery, and a great fun, reliable ride. One can pick other models for other reasons, but there is nothing wrong with choosing the c-line electric 12. As a life long rider, I would not/could not spend that much money on a 4 speed. It’s just not viable to me and my rides with or without a motor. There are e-bike riders who aren’t really needing or interested in pedal power bike riding. I kinda don’t get that.
r/Brompton · 12 Speed C-Line for hilly commute? I can do a 26km commute with about 100m climb, on an electric C-line 12 speed, on level 2, with about 30% left. On level 3, I only get about 20km on that route. So that to say, it can be done at level 1 and 2. But you might want the new greenway battery for a little extra margin. On my 26km route, I take the charger with me.
r/Brompton · NBD: T-Line Electric That is not at all the experience in the electric C-line 12… The motor just quietly fades out… I regularly ride at 35+ kph Likewise when I slow down to 25kph the motor gently eases in. The sound is more apparent than the feel.
r/Brompton · Bought the G Line Electric on April 2, and I’ve already crossed the 2,000 km mark with just 21 battery charge cycles. That’s about 98 km per full charge. That’s pretty great stretching. I have some decent hills on my longer routes. Even one near by, only 16km but with 300m elevation gain, and a lot on gravel and dirt trail. The 32km round trip exhausted the battery on the last hill climb about 3km from home. I’ve only managed 40km average over 39 charge cycles and 1400km. My original c-line 12 is also the older battery with slightly less capacity. I have the greenway compatible cage when it comes time for a new battery (or maybe a second)
r/Brompton · Inconvenience of an electric Brompton Plus the non-e-motiq electric 12 is still future compatible with the newer greenway battery with the right cage.

r/Brompton · Electric G-Line vs C-Line Depends on your use case... The eG is more or less a solid adventure bike, with the electric assistance for the "end of a long trip" (so to speak. Its more like a full-sized bike in terms of feel and ability. And not really a "commuter bike" like the C-line. The electric C-line is a "slightly longer commuter's great friend." The size of the eC makes it great for multi-modal journeys. That's not to say its not an adventure bike, but you'd find the wheel size a bit constraining for the harder journeys (yes, others have done some narly stuff, but its nor as meant for the rougher bits as the eG). The electrics on both are similar-enough for most folks, but you might find the eG a bit more usable depending on how you pedal. The weight of the eC is nice... that's not to say that the eG is heavy, but comparing the both, its nice to not have to swing as much in one arm (if you keep the battery attached after folding).
r/Brompton · Electric G-Line vs C-Line For paved rides and the lightweight, the eC would feel solid. If you think you’d venture the packed dirt trails for more than half the rides, go with the eG instead.

r/Brompton · Are you happy with your e-motiq Brompton? They have replaced every time at no cost to me to be fair but it does seem somewhat fundamental!
r/Brompton · Are you happy with your e-motiq Brompton? Not 100% sure but the theory is that the motor being at the front means it takes more impact and that over time it knocks components out of sync. Others will be able to clarify the specifics

r/Brompton · NBD: T-Line Electric Wow … GREAT review! I’ve got the same hill outside my front door! Concerned about only 4 gears. I know that there’s a mod for a fifth gear. That’s easy to do appropriate bikes website. And I’ve read about a few more years that might be possible. We’ll have to see what people are able to fit in there. I’ll be giving it a test ride in January when it shows up in the USA. It’s very tempting if it rides like you say … I’m not sure I can give up my 12 speed C – LINE electric though … 406% gearing range. I’m not sure a bike being 10+ is going to make that much of a difference but we will see.
r/Brompton · 12 Speed C-Line for hilly commute? I own the 12-speed electric and live in a very hilly town. This bike can do everything you described — I ride all the same scenarios you listed, with worse hills than you describe. If you want, since I’m a match for your exact scenarios (sans a girlfriend 😢), I can reply point-by-point to your whole post. Happy to help; this sub helped me a ton when I was deciding and test-riding. Here are the key things you should know: * Act fast: The 12-speed Electrics won’t be around long. It’s perfect for your use case — 406% gearing range and meaningful electric assist. I love mine. I had the 4-speed version and exchanged it for the 12 about 7 months later — dramatic improvement. * Range: I get \~30 km from \~50–60% of the battery. I usually charge to 80% and ride down to 20–30% to extend battery life 2–3×. A full charge is \~52 km for me (210 lbs + 10–20 lbs load). Winter cuts that by \~10–20%, but it still covers everything you described. I do a 100% charge monthly (for cell balancing) or before longer/unknown rides and bring the charger when needed. * Greenway battery (must-have): It comes with the tiny deck-of-cards charger, and extras are \~$50 — great for leaving one at work or carrying in a bag. A 30-min top-up adds \~2–3 miles. The older BMZ charger was huge; this is a big upgrade. * Hills: Steep hills are totally fine. Higher cadence = more motor assist → easier climbs. Learning that made a big difference; I used to grind slowly up hills. Just a little more spin and a bit of extra effort activates more assist. * Bus: I almost never take it now — the e-bike is faster and easier for everything. Should improve your transit situation a lot. * Weather/dirt: I’m in a 2-BR condo and cleaning chains became a nightmare, so I switched to waxing. Total game-changer — far less mess and maintenance. Here’s the detailed post I wrote about switching to wax, with great Silca videos and alternative methods/products: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Brompton/comments/1l9ky4s/comment/mxenlj2/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Brompton/comments/1l9ky4s/comment/mxenlj2/) * Reliability: The current Electric C-Line has been around since 2017, with lots of improvements. I don’t find it half-baked at all — it’s well thought out, integrates perfectly with the Brompton luggage system, and is very stable and well balanced. Think of it this way: the world’s best folding & rolling bike also happens to have an electric option. There’s a 3-year warranty on the electrics too. Sure, you can always get a lemon, but Brompton supports it and swaps out bad parts.
r/Brompton · Is now a bad time to buy an electric C line? Saw that, and I discussed them while they were about to make it because my 12 speed received what was probably the first Greenway battery in the USA on a C line. The Brompton USA store hadn’t seen one yet. I was trying to confirm why my battery was different, computable with previous bags ( not, needed new frame) They started shipping it before they announced it. It was a weird time. I didn’t know if my basket would fit or not fit. About two weeks later, Brompton sent me this document and email which shows which battery fits where, and which cradle is compatible with which bike: https://imgur.com/a/SHgYeqw The design is identical except for: - a better locking mechanism that holds the battery into the cradle. - And maybe 10% more capacity that oddly doesn’t extend range on the C/P lines according to Brompton - it has an AMAZING $49 deck of cards size charger, making it incredibly portable, and a couple hundred dollars cheaper than the previous battery charger … I bought a second immediately at that price. Being able to bring the charger anywhere gives new ways to ride the bike quick top up of 30 minutes on mine give me 4 to 6 more miles - a different set of firmware for future enhancements - Was recently told by prompting that the G line electric about to ship to the USA for the first time, includes an on handlebar button to adjust the power level assist so you don’t have to reach down and do it by hand or have the app running on the phone to swipe. - G electric bags just require a frame swap in order to be used by the other bikes, which is great cause I love the large electric one It’s smart of Brompton to keep making modifications to the battery that works across all of the lines so they only have to have one part to support.
r/Brompton · Is now a bad time to buy an electric C line? Highly Doubtful … battery used is already identical between both (so G borrows from C/P electrics) … and rear wheel of G is larger so allows for different internal hub motor + external gearing only—4-speed. G electric design seems limited for gearing options where the C/P electrics don’t have that problem With the electric motor being in the front of the bike. The rear can be focused on gearing options on the C/P. The G line electric seems to be restricted to external only. Hope they add more in the future 4 just too few for my needs. Love my c-12 electric!
r/Brompton · Anyone used G Line 80mm wheels on a Brompton C Line Electric? 70mm yes; a few posts here … i’m adding 70mm to my c line, much better quality vs. the advance rack wheels too fragile, rubber band comes off wheel! I’m sure 80s would work too. Brompton support said below when I asked them: The 70mm (and 80mm for that matter) G Line roller wheels do indeed have sealed bearings installed in them. It's part of the reason the G Line rolls so nicely while folded! The mounting hardware is the same thread pitch and diameter for both the G Line and C Line roller wheel mounts, as well as the rack roller wheel mounts. That being said, installing a larger roller wheel is not something we've tested extensively, and we cannot speak to the longevity and performance installing the larger G Line roller wheels on your C Line. If installed with a roller rack, these wheels will also raise the rack platform higher from the ground. I imagine this will all work nicely, though may lead to adjusting your rolling technique from what you are used to!
r/Brompton · G Line vs G Line Electric - Erfahrungen? I’ve test ridden the G acoustic, loved it rides like road bike & perfect gearing range. The ALFINE 8 speed hub super reliable too; very well known. I tested lots of C/P acoustic and electric, G wasn’t out or announced when bought a 4 speed c electric for 7 months … exchanged for 12 c electric when it was released … really needed extra lower gears in my hilly town. 8-12% grades common, occasional 18% + too. I wouldn’t find the 4 electric G usable in my town … low gearing too limited. Considering acoustic as backup & exercise bike; more terrain options. I’m 215# 5’ 11” and find the C super comfortable … 1-2x a month do a 24+ mile ride, always super comfortable … which is amazing! I prefer the smaller bikes, want more portability & train/plane travel in overhead storage too. One option people overlook is adding smaller chain ring in front if lower gearing desired too btw. I’m considering in my 12 electric as gears 11/12 rarely used and too fast if I do! Found the gearing chart super helpful: https://bromptonbikesdealers.my.salesforce.com/sfc/p/#8d000001EcDQ/a/Tu000001bSXp/uvAtSnyWUSa9EiXnYWAHQtTmx6wSpoGl0Y3UpHmXA7Q And this video for understanding various gearing scenarios: https://youtu.be/Ojk7z5o7l0k
r/Brompton · Brompton G-Line Electric trouble getting on 8% incline That two speed sounds super fun BTW … I live in such a hilly town I really have to do the electric but would love it for London … Just need a permanent visa and a job!
r/Brompton · Electric C-Line, Electric P-Line or Electric G-Line? I’m 215#, have the electric C – 12. For most I have it charged to 80% and use down to 30 or 20%, just to keep the battery in excellent health. I can get 18 miles this way. I do charge to 100% on long range or unknown mileage days and bring along the charger. The new Greenway battery charger really changes things.I have the new Greenway battery, so I have the tiny deck of card size charger, which really changes the range because I can bring it along. I bought a second for $49. And for a long trip, I just top up To add more range during a coffee or water break. All electric bike companies use < 100 pound models on nearly flat but slightly downhill terrain to get their mileage estimates. I think the UK based Brompton still uses Twiggy to do the testing 🤣
r/Brompton · New Brompton C Line Electric (2026) Happy to help! I had the 4-speed electric for 7 months and it mostly worked well but I live in a very hilly town (10-12% grades, occasional 18% ++) and really needed lower gearing, so exchanged it for the 12 speed I’ve mentioned I have now. The 4 should be great for most people I think … congratulations again! P.S. **Bonus tip to extend batt life (what I do):** Main rule = **avoid extremes** → don’t run to 0% + don’t leave at 100% >24 hrs. I normally charge to ~80% and ride down to ~20–30%. **Manual says charge to 100% monthly** to rebalance cells, so I do that, but I ride same day and **unplug when full** (don’t leave it sitting on charger—still trickle-tops). If I hit ~10% (left light blinking), I turn assist off + just run lights to get home vs draining it further. I use a **Kasa smart plug** to time charges: - **<40%:** +~16% per 30 min - **>40%:** +~11% per 30 min (Helps stop around ~80% accurately.)
r/Brompton · 12 Speed C-Line for hilly commute? I should have added: test ride, test ride then test ride some more. Glad test riding had the right result for you. I test rode over a couple months before pulling the trigger. Had the same concern re. no disc brakes, since my e-cargo has them and they’re great. But found they’re fine; I make sure inner child suppressed, so I don’t go too fast, too often. Then the brakes are fine. Sorry it’s not for you … but glad you didn’t get it then hate it later. That said, test ride the G electric next time; has disc brakes, much more like a road bike, but still folds, rolls like a Brompton. Once they add more gears to the electric, someday not soon enough, I’ll get one.
r/Brompton · New P-line electric with rear hub motor The old BMZ batt was ~300Wh; the new Greenway (eG-4 + all 2025 models) is 345Wh. I’ve owned both. The new rear hub is more efficient too, so the ~20% range bump checks out. Honestly the biggest upgrade is the new bar controller, then the range IMO. I’ve had the recent eC-4 and now the eC-12 w/ the 345Wh Greenway. Wouldn’t trade the 12 for any of the new ones — 406% gearing range > modest motor gains. Super sad the 12s are gone 😢.
r/foldingbikes · Urtopia Carbon Fold 1 vs Brompton Electric C Line Yes. BTW GREAT deals exist on Brompton electrics as they clear out stock as they move to only 4-speed electrics. Brompton’s website & their dealers have this pricing! Also Brompton sells renewed electric bikes with same warranty as new … those will still be available after the new stock is cleared out, Inventory varies so keep checking back if that’s the way you go. eC-12 owner here; the 4 speed would be more than fine for New York City, I had a Brompton 4 electric 7 months in my very hilly town of Charlottesville, Virginia, but exchanged it for speed electric. I really need the low gears for hills here. But you should be fine. The prompting is unique in its ability to completely fold up, and just roll along with a seat fully extended. [https://imgur.com/a/RUxleAs](https://imgur.com/a/RUxleAs) This works best with a four or 12 speed because of the design of the frame. More detail here: [https://www.pedaal.com/brompton/2025-brompton-c-line-should-i-wait/](https://www.pedaal.com/brompton/2025-brompton-c-line-should-i-wait/) I wouldn’t waste the money on a vendor you don’t know the quality of, nor the longevity of.
r/Brompton · Choosing my first Brompton _electric or manual? Electric P-12 ... essentially 48 gears. up to about 16mph .... I think the power assist would be most helpful, and allow to cycle longer when desired. I too live in a hilly town, bought the 4 speed electric; exchanged it 7mo. later for the 12, really needed those lower gears on some bad hills here! Not being very fit, and cycling as adult beginner ... makes the electric perfect for you methinks. Note you can always choose L0, battery on for lights but not powering the motor, if you want to ride without assistance; or leave the battery at home! Key is to INSIST on getting a bike w/Greenway battery; G-lines all have it; older stock of P electric might be BMZ ... DON'T accept one. The key advantage for me is the tiny charger; Price ($49( and size of a deck of cards ... where the BMZ is brick sized, $275, just can't easily bring it along. If you have the tiny Greenway charger, you can easily top on on the route, 30min gives me 4-6mi, or at your destination, gettin ready of the return trip. It's great for trains, buses, but always check their policies. Tube / trains in UK it's fine, but bus drivers have discretion to allow/not allow when needed. Eurostar requires a cover, as do Japanese trains, etc. Airplanes; bike is fine, battery is too large to fly; most ebike batteries are. If you want to take multi-way tours w/it and fly to get there, many replace the front electric motor wheel w/standard one to save some weight. Using the 12 shifters outlined here: [https://youtu.be/VYJaYKygF0s?si=EGIbchup6YddZMH\_](https://youtu.be/VYJaYKygF0s?si=EGIbchup6YddZMH_) Using the Level 0 - 3 power, L2 is what' recommended most of the time, L3 for bad hills, L1 for flats, slower speeds w/flats (cities). Do lots of test rides if possible; I did this for a couple months; really helped. I like to use my battery mostly in the 20% - 80% charge state; this will double or triple its useful lifespan, adding years to its life. Effective range for 60% of the battery for me, I'm 213Lbs., have the C-line 12, I can get 18-20mi or more - that's much more than I ride in a normal day. Note it's fine to charge to 100% from time to time, the manual says to do it monthly to rebalance the battery cells. But make sure you use it within a day; batteries should't reach extremes 100 for long or 0 ... I use 10% as my floor, then turn power assist off, keep battery on to power lights to get home. On new routes, out of town rides, I often charge to 100% to have extra range ... and now w/tiny Greenway battery charger I can top it up anywhere. Really makes 'range anxiety' a thing of the past for me. Oh … irregardless of which model, ALWAYS get the rack! It only adds 0.8 lbs. vs. no rack. Unnoticeable. Makes fold/roll a breeze … I do this all the time w/seat fully extended, pushing it along: [https://imgur.com/a/RUxleAs](https://imgur.com/a/RUxleAs) … if I need to get off train or short stairs, easy to push seat down to lock bike [https://imgur.com/a/x9pf7bd](https://imgur.com/a/x9pf7bd) Then set down, seat fully up and push along again. If I have a longer flight of stairs, I’ll do shoulder carry [https://imgur.com/a/T4Mie2R](https://imgur.com/a/T4Mie2R) Or if long escalator I have it fully unfolded in bike mode and just position on the stairs and hold the brakes till end. My fave is short grocery trips, which the electric basket is perfect for: [https://imgur.com/a/2-grocery-shopping-pics-cCDgiVB](https://imgur.com/a/2-grocery-shopping-pics-cCDgiVB) Here’s some great detail on the MK6 frame the c-12, G or any 4 or 12 speed comes with. It’s got lots of great advancements: [https://www.pedaal.com/brompton/2025-brompton-c-line-should-i-wait/](https://www.pedaal.com/brompton/2025-brompton-c-line-should-i-wait/) Hope this helps, good luck!
r/Brompton · Is now a bad time to buy an electric C line? Disagree … they’re amazingly compact. Great for commute 15.5mph plenty fast in a city … I ride slower on my 12-speed electric a lot of the time - safer. And no need to carry —- just fold and … roll with it, baby! https://imgur.com/a/RUxleAs … key is to get the rear rack … those extra 2 rolling wheels make a huge difference!
r/Brompton · Considering an Electric C line for a 7mile commute I own a C-Line 12 Electric. Electric = game-changing. There’s a saying, “You don’t get a Brompton—until you get a Brompton” … but how much MORE true for the Electric Brompton! NOTE: Brompton has 30 day returns, check in your country. REI in USA has 1 year returns! Great news: E-bike riders get more exercise, not less—over 9% more, according to a 10,000-cyclist study (see my answer to #4 below). ⸻ Answers to your 5 questions: 1. How much cargo? Please specify. Weight matters a lot on a Brompton: 22 lbs max in the front, plus a rear rack, and 243 lbs total rider + cargo. I carry a hand scale to make sure.Rear rack bags? Tons of options—but they interfere with the fold. I recommend starting with Brompton’s Electric Basket Bag. You may not need anything else. I almost never remove mine. My 30L backpack fits inside it. I wear the backpack home after a grocery run. Buy the rain-resistant cover for T-Bag, it fits great, holds in groceries when overflowing too. I also have Vincita’s Atlas E-Bag—TONS of space—great for 2–3 day train trips. It works for office days too, letting me leave my backpack at home.If you’re getting a 4- or 12-speed, the Advance Rear Rack only adds 0.3 kg—basically unnoticeable. 2. Register your bike at Brompton and you’ll get 3 years warranty on the electric system, 7 years on the frame. They’re generous even beyond that—I’ve seen people get 20% off parts as goodwill.I went with the best-known brand, and one with the best fold and roll. Brompton turns 50 this year. Their parts availability is legendary, even for decades-old bikes. There might be delays due to tariffs or global shipping, but I trust Brompton’s track record over other brands.I pre-buy maintenance parts: cables, cogs, chains, so I’m ready for any supply disruptions (all bikes have this risk.) . I wax my chains to increase life for chain & cogs 3-5x using Silca’s immersive wax system (note: their drip wax is over 95% as effective). 3. Worth considering… The warranty is the same for refurbished bikes, but the advantages of the new MK6 frame are hard to beat. Read this excellent breakdown of what’s new: [https://www.pedaal.com/brompton/2025-brompton-c-line-should-i-wait/The](https://www.pedaal.com/brompton/2025-brompton-c-line-should-i-wait/The) 12-speed is hard to pass up IMO. Buy for the future—think trips overseas, longer local rides. You can swap in a standard wheel when flying (battery must stay home when flying). 4. It’s NOT overkill. You get OVER 9% more exercise on an e-bike. And you can arrive less sweaty—or not sweaty at all—for work, social events, or errands. That’s a huge win. E-bikers ride more, drive less, and get more total exercise as a result. 5.Saddles are [standard.You](http://standard.You) can pick from tons of aftermarket seats. But it’s worth getting a professional fit—softer isn’t always better, many times worse for longer rides. Proper sit bone fitting is key, especially for long rides. SUMMARY: Don’t buy for today—buy for the unimagined adventures to come. I own the 12-speed C-Line and previously had the 4-speed Electric, which I exchanged. The wider gearing opens up more options—more places and ways to ride.If you go Electric, consider the new C/P-line with the Greenway battery (all G-Line bikes have it). This new battery + frame has some real advantages.Major one for me: the charger is TINY—deck-of-cards size vs. the huge brick that came with the BMZ battery. I now carry it on rides. A 30-minute charge gives me 4–6 extra miles.I even bought a second charger for just $49 (the old one cost $275!).
r/Brompton · Question: Brompton P-Line Electric 4 Gearshift "enough"? No—do the 12-speed C-Line instead - $1,000 less. I exchanged my 4-speed electric C-Line for it. It gives you more options, and the ability to travel without the battery, and by replacing the front electric wheel with a standard wheel, you’ve got a great touring bike! I find the rack essential. It makes rolling the bike at a train station or shopping so much easier when pushing the bike along or pulling the bike along. Plus, you can go into a shopping cart mode by keeping the handles up with the electric basket bag! It’s amazing to use. I have this bag for the rear rack when I need a little more shopping capacity: REI Co-op Beyonder Soft Folding Basket. It’s amazing, and so narrow, that feet never strike it while pedaling. Go for 12-speed. It “future-proofs” you for any scenario you might do … If weight is a concern, it might be worth splurging for the P-Line version. In the US, the webpage only shows that it’s 1Kg lighter, which doesn’t seem to be worth $1000 more for me. Lastly and MOST IMPORTANTLY - - WAIT. Make sure you get one with the new Greenway battery - it comes with a dramatically smaller battery charger, which is smaller than a pack of cigarettes! It dramatically changes your range options when you’re out and about, and it’s so easy to bring it with you versus the old BMZ battery brick (huge!), that you can easily do quick 30-minute top-ups that add 4 to 6 more miles to your range … I got lucky and my new 12-speed C-LINE came with it! I had no idea they were moving to the new battery. Look at the battery on the G-LINE; they use the same battery as mine, and they’ve replaced them across the entire line. The top looks different. It has square white boxes around the power and light buttons; you can see pictures of it on the G-Line website. Hope this helps!
r/Brompton · Which brompton do you think is more practical for me in the long run, the C line 12 speed or G line electric? I wondered a similar thing once, I did a test ride of similar hills to my very hilly town, of a 4 speed Brompton c-line electric, then a six speed non-electric Brompton, which has a similar gearing range breadth as the 12. I chose a representative difficult hill, the 4 speed was slow, but doable in the lowest gear assist level 3. The six speed I barely got an eighth of the way up the hill and had to walk it all the way up! It’s quite shocking / impressive how much assistance the seemingly small electric motor gives you. I’d suggest a test ride like that a few times and see how you feel. Like another poster, the C – LINE is very worth considering because of your 2nd floor apartment. Whichever you go with consider getting a smaller chain ring, on the C – LINE you would move from the 50 T down to the 44. This really helps improve your lower gearing. If I had kept the four speed electric, that’s what I would have done, but I exchanged it for them now discontinued 12 speed electric. I still might do it for the 12! My recommendation: electric for sure … look at weight differences of G vs C electrics … and size. I’d suggest probably a 4 speed electric C line w/consideration of installing a 44t chainring a month or two after purchase … or used 12 speed electric C line.
r/Brompton · New P-line electric with rear hub motor Big difference is handlebar controller … bet that’s a big mileage improver. Can more quickly change lower level assists after getting up a hill saving battery. I delay reaching down on my e-C-12 as I rarely have phone app mounted. Rear vs. front wheel drive .. meh. 🫤
r/Brompton · Is now a bad time to buy an electric C line? G is lighter … or same as equivalent C. My c-12 electric is heavier the c-4 electric same weight! … look at UK SPECS
r/Brompton · Considering an Electric C line for a 7mile commute Yep moving to the Conti’s once my original tires need replacing … no idea how long they’ll last or how I’ll know 🤣 I wouldn’t have the electric parts with me at that point that scenario would be me doing a multi day trip overseas where I would replace the front wheel with a standard one and not bring the battery since you can’t bring them on the plane. I have a 12 speed C line at that point … probably a 50 T/33T dual chain ring as well. After he told me that and I thought about it a while, I figured it the rear frame broke. I have better odds of getting the steel frame replaced vs. than the titanium one and very doubtful I,dfind a bike shop that can weld and fix it where it would be trustworthy, trip likely over at that point for me but that’s kind of a far-fetched scenario he brought up methinks
r/Brompton · C Line Utility? Sorry, didn’t see that. Also didn’t know you chose not to get the electric G line, you’re in SoCal so it’s not sold in the US yet so were you going to buy it over in Europe? I couldn’t do the G line electric—only a 4 speed. I initially bought the c line electric 4 speed, but exchanged it for the 12 seven months later. I think I’d have to wait to see if they added more gears to the G electric later. But it’s not here yet so I haven’t given a test ride, so we will see.
r/Brompton · Electric C-Line, Electric P-Line or Electric G-Line? Sounds like we have a lot of similarities. I was in a very similar position a couple of years ago when choosing my first Brompton Electric. This is going to be a long post, but it’s what I wish someone had shared with me when I was in your shoes. I’ve tried to keep it readable by breaking some details into replies below. Follow-ups below: • Reply B: Helpful videos (and why they matter) • Reply C: Optional C- / P- / G-Line comparisons & edge cases I live in a very hilly city. Many of the hills I ride regularly are in the 8–12% grade range, and the hill directly outside my condo driveway is around 18–20%. I usually try to avoid climbs like that, but sometimes I can’t — for example, when visiting my mother. I originally owned a 4-speed Electric C-Line for about seven months, then moved to a 12-speed Electric C-Line, which is my current bike. ### Test riding (and why it mattered) The single most important thing I did was test riding. I made about three trips to a Brompton dealer over a couple of months and, on each visit, test rode two to three bikes. Each trip required a 2½-hour train ride each way, but it was absolutely worth it. At that time, the G-Line didn’t exist yet, so those early test rides were on C- and P-Line bikes. When the 8-speed non-electric G-Line later became available, I test rode it separately and loved it. I bought from REI (USA) because of their 1-year return policy, since I wasn’t sure a Brompton was right for me at first. REI is a Brompton dealer, and when I later realized I wanted a 12-speed electric (which they didn’t have in stock), the Brompton-trained mechanic I worked with offered to call their Brompton representative to see what bikes were available and help me find one I liked, rather than just having me return it and buy elsewhere. That experience alone is why I’ll always try to buy there. Even with electric assist, gearing still matters, especially in a hilly city like mine. I found the 4-speed electric workable, but limiting over time. Moving to the 12-speed electric worked much better for me because it adds four additional lower gears below the 4-speed range, which makes a real difference on steep climbs. Electric assist makes a dramatic difference. I’ve ridden the same hills with and without assist, and the difference is most noticeable on sustained steep grades. You can also improve hill performance by changing the front chainring from 50T to 44T. On a 12-speed Electric C-Line, that effectively means losing gears 11 and 12, which doesn’t matter to me because I rarely use them. I’m not trying to maximize top speed — mid-teens to low-20s mph is more than fast enough. Even though they’re discontinued new, you can still find 12-speed and 6-speed electric Bromptons through some dealers and on Brompton Renewed, which is currently the main way to get anything above a 4-speed electric. Renewed bikes are typically about 10–15% less than new and come with a full Brompton warranty, but the trade-off is that it’s a one-shot purchase with no return policy — so you really need to be confident it’s the right bike for you. I also use the following gearing chart all the time. Even though electric bikes aren’t shown, it’s extremely helpful once you’ve test ridden electric and non-electric versions on similar terrain: https://bromptonbikesdealers.my.salesforce.com/sfc/p/#8d000001EcDQ/a/Tu000001bSXp/uvAtSnyWUSa9EiXnYWAHQtTmx6wSpoGl0Y3UpHmXA7Q
r/Brompton · Is now a bad time to buy an electric C line? I would assume the C – LINE, which is based on the same electric platform that’s been shipping and improving since 2018 is mature technology and likely more reliable than the new motor technology they put in the G – LINE. Both bikes use the same battery, the Greenway battery, a slight upgrade from the BMZ (look identical). I think the size of the C LINE would be much more conducive for the tube … the smaller size. I have a new 12 speed electric, but for seven months I had the 4 speed electric, but found I really needed the extra gears for hills, so I exchanged for the 12. Over time the G LINE will add more gearing options I’m sure, but for today it’s only 4 gears. The Greenway battery charger tiny, only the size of a deck of cards, and it’s only $49 for a second one so get one either way. It’s just great to have a charger with you, it gives you more trip options, you can easily top up for 30 minutes and get 4 to 6 more miles.

r/Brompton · Brompton Electric Upgrade Gearing Some additional questions that may help you decide. How limited do you feel in the highest gear? Totally freewheeling or just under the motor by a bit? Do you use the lowest gear at all? How often do you bike unpowered on it? If just under by a bit and you answered no to using the lowest gear; perhaps change the chainring to a larger one. Bromptons have 44, 50, 54 as the standard sizes but bcd130 chainrings run from 38 to at least 60. Remember to extend the chain as well. There should be a chart for how many links to add vs how many teeth increased. There are dual chainrings, dual chainring cranksets if you want to keep both top gear range and lower. If you run unpowered a lot, perhaps the upgrade to 12s via a new brompton 12s rear wheel and related 3 speed internal hub shifter, cable, index chain etc…. The videos by 2bikes4adventure cover a lot of these possible drivetrains of which there are a lot. They cover pros and cons far better than I can. https://youtu.be/5dbbAuFa60s?feature=shared https://youtu.be/1hWXTlpZrRs?feature=shared https://youtu.be/-Q9wd8Ewlec?feature=shared https://youtu.be/7uVwMx9OZ94?feature=shared https://youtu.be/GOEWU5l595w?feature=shared

r/Brompton · Which brompton do you think is more practical for me in the long run, the C line 12 speed or G line electric? I recently went through a similar thought process and ended up buying a C-line 12-speed electric. The G-line has a larger wheelbase and is more comfortable for longer rides. However, it folds much larger and doesn't easily fit under my office desk or in the luggage racks on UK trains. It is also much heavier to carry. The C-line 12-speed definitely gives you enough gear range to ride hilly terrain, but that, of course, depends on your personal fitness as well. You can buy a refurbished C-line 12-speed, or upgrade it later, if you find you need the electric assist
r/Brompton · Inconvenience of an electric Brompton I have an electric 12 speed C line. It doesn't have the e-Motiq battery system, so I can drive it like a regular non-electric Brompton.

r/Brompton · Are you happy with your e-motiq Brompton? The main failure is the design of both the motor and the controller. it was Brompton's first attempt at ebiking. they tried to design it in house with external delivery partner and it turned out a mess. I'm glad that they are phasing it out
r/Brompton · Changing chainring on 12-Speed Brompton Electric C Line u can easily DIY this. all u need is a 44T chainring from Brompton, or any chainring with 130BCD in the range of 38-48T that can take 10/11s/narrow-wide and a chain cutter. how steep is the hill you are attempting to conquer that the new 12s gear range + electric motor aren't able to cover ? i am genuine curious

r/foldingbikes · Just purchased my first bicycle after not riding for nearly 2 decades! Folding bikes and multi-modal transport in the city is AWESOME! Also, its freaky how light electric bikes can be without sacrificing on range. Any tips or advice to a new owner who's also new to cycling? I agree, there is no reason to put it in a shopping cart since the bike can just be rolled in shopping cart mode.

r/Brompton · 12 Speed C-Line for hilly commute? Thanks for the detailed write up, just did a test ride in a very hilly area, my takeaways: The bike feels weird under electrical power, one of the things I really liked about the manual brompton I tried was that it felt like a normal bike, only small. The motor being on the front makes the bike feel lurchey and odd, especially when pulling away uphill. It almost feels like a ski lift. The power was good and I was surprised how not horrible the ride felt at speed, given how much weight is slung on the front end. The high handlebar option feels awful. Its spaghetti. The lowbar feels much, much better. Rim brakes feel barely adequate after using hydraulics regularly, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable on brakes like this on wheels this small in bad weather. Pleasantly surprised that the battery can stay on the folding bike, as all promo materials seem to depict the battery off the bike for some reason. The controls being on the battery feels like a complete kludge and really reinforced my feeling that this was a rushed design. Its very difficult to adjust settings while moving safely, it sticks out compared to how nice and thought out the brompton cockpit is otherwise. The noise this thing makes is pretty significant, my current bike makes a quiet woosh. I knew the rearhub would make noise and was prepared for that, the front motor being so loud was a surprise. Overall I don't think its for me, I'm sure it would do everything I want it to but I don't think I'd like the way it did it, and I don't think its nice enough to justify spending the money (more than one month's pay) on.
r/Brompton · 12 Speed C-Line for hilly commute? Yes it's the older model, with the front wheel motor. It kind of seems like a bodge to me, like a third party kit at a (inflated) first party price. I've heard a lot about battery disconnects when you hit bumps and it just seems a bit jank. Interesting to hear that they're more maintenance sensitive, the internal hub gearing was something I was wondering about as I'm not sure how maintain it, there's an ingress point so I assume dirt does get in there, but can you do any meaningful cleaning without taking it to pieces?

r/Brompton · Upgrade discussion: a C/P electric or T + electric kit? Get the 4 speed electric C-line for weight and ease of maintenance. Since you won't have to carry it into train stations, up/down stairs all the time etc. there's no point really in upgrading to the P line. You won't notice the weight difference with the electric assist. The differences between the electric C and P are the titanium front fork and rear triangle on the P (700 grams lighter), slightly heavier pedals (C), standard comfort seat (C) instead of the SL seat (P) and color options.

Now the G is even heavier but the ride is so much more comfortable and natural. I also carry my G in my car. The C i took mostly on the train. r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? >I bought a Brompton Electric C Line in late May 2025. The bike is new but the model is 2023. …I took it to an authorized Brompton dealer, and after waiting nearly a month, they replaced the rear hub — at my expense (255€) Why wasn't the repair covered on a bike that could not have been more than three months from the purchase date? The wheels are supposed to be covered for two years from purchase. Did you not register the bike on the Brompton site? (I forget how many days you have to register but it's a short window.) I never try to backpedal when my Brompton is folded so I can't comment on that, but unfolded I have no problem doing so though I do it almost exclusively to get my pedals in the correct position after a stop. I don't backpedal on descents or anything like that.
r/Brompton · e-Motiq C-line (4speed) vs Electric C-line (12 speed) >Do you use the app open while driving? Yes, the app acts as a speedometer and it's much easier to switch assist levels than doing it manually with the battery. I have the original quadlock mount that fits nicely in the center of the handlebars. >I guess the new interface with display will showcase things you’d like to see in the app as well? AFAIK it's got less information than the app. It might control the lights (can someone here confirm or deny?) but outside of a smaller form factor I don't see the point in spending $200 or however much the controller is. This is what I wanted in the app: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Brompton/comments/zl868l/brompton\_app\_wishlist/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Brompton/comments/zl868l/brompton_app_wishlist/) This is what we have so far: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Brompton/comments/1opguk8/comment/nnbwjtt/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Brompton/comments/1opguk8/comment/nnbwjtt/) >if looked into descriptions of the battery on 12speed C-line electric in Europe but couldn’t find a specification. Is it such a difference with before? A smaller charger, I’ve seen someone mention. I previously rode a C 6-speed electric with the BMZ battery (now my husband's ride). The charger is much larger, the controls have a different layout, the BMZ battery is heavier, and the frames are different. That said, I think the BMZ and Greenway batteries are comparable. Rider weight, rider fitness, assist level, terrain, and weather are going to be larger factors in how far you can go on a single charge.
r/Brompton · Brompton Electric C Line 4 speed Subscription £75/month Do the specify if it comes with a BMZ or Greenway battery? The chargers are noticeably different in size and weight.
r/Brompton · Changing chainring on 12-Speed Brompton Electric C Line Last I looked into it was when I was riding a 6-spd, but at the time 50T was the only chainring Brompton mentioned in the electric specifications. With the introduction of the 12-spd and/or the motor in the rear they *may* have included the 44T and the 54T in the specifications. *Or not*. I just checked my 2024 e-12-spd manual and it doesn't even say what chainring came standard.😒 (We need another hero to leak the current dealer's manual because Brompton's refusal to share detailed info with customers is aggravating.) You can always check with Brompton customer service if you're afraid of voiding the warranty, but there's nothing physically preventing you from changing the chainring.

r/Brompton · e-Motiq C-line (4speed) vs Electric C-line (12 speed) There are three electric C Line 12 speeds in my household. Your points : Electric C-line (12 speed) @€3275 +more gears so more versatility (easier on hills, faster on long flats) +possibility to swap front wheel to convert to “non-electrical”. Then more gears make it more practical. +With introduction of new line, price is lowered +Line will be discontinued, so now’s the last chance to buy (?) Your points are valid considerations, which are the reasons we have three electric C Line 12 speeds. However, with respect to the 2025 e-Motiq C-line (4speed) @€3700, it will be possible to changeout the electric rear wheel to a non-electric 4 speed or even install a non-electric 12 speed rear wheel with an added right hand 3 speed shifter, since the C Line advance rear extremity triangle is the same for 4 speed electric, 4 speed non-electric, 12 speed electric, and 12 speed non-electric C Lines.
r/Brompton · NBD: T-Line Electric 👌, I occasionally ride the 12 speed electric without the battery, because the gearing is low enough as compared to the 4 speed gearing lowest gear.
r/Brompton · NBD: T-Line Electric Very true, the 12 speed gives option to still be able to climb hills without the battery.
r/Brompton · I read your recommendation guys! For well structured bike lane 16 km commute, an electric 12 speed C or P Line provides for contingency, such as : • riding just with human power (no battery) • shopping cart mode in stores with the city bag
r/Brompton · Brompton Electric Upgrade Gearing “I feel a little limited by the highest gear, especially when I have the motor turned on” Keep in mind that as you are pedaling at 25 kph (15.6 mph), the motor assist transitions to no assistance, meaning just above 25 kph (15.6 mph) all of the power comes from your pedaling. The electric controller stops electric power assistance right at 15.6 mph (25km/h), however as soon as speed drops below 15.6 mph, electric assistance begins again — matching assistance to the torque and cadence output of the rider. Above 15.6 mph, only the rider’s leg power is propelling the Brompton and this power requirement will be approx. the same power (except for the electric’s heavier weight and a very small amount of drag from the coasting motor) as would be necessary to propel a non-electric Brompton of otherwise same configuration. The controller algorithm manages the motor power output via the rider’s torque output and cadence sensed by the bottom bracket sensors and feedback from motor sensors. As a rider’s power and cadence reduce, the electric system output also reduces smoothly, much the same as would happen when a rider begins to coast (coasting = no pedal power output). Some rider power must be sustained to maintain steady speeds below 15.6 mph. After stopping pedal revolutions, the rider must exert some pedal power for approx. 3/4 to 1 revolutions in order for the electric system to power up in proportion to the rider’s output as well as according to the assist level of 1, 2, or 3. The electric Brompton is a class 1 system, which essentially means it augments the rider’s power by measurement of the rider’s power output.

r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? The problem is that the wheel can't move when folded, it's a problem caused by the 3 speed hub and the way the engagement mechanism works. Just slightly unfold, reposition the pedals and close the fold again. I know it's annoying but it's just life. There's nothing wrong with the hub.
r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? This is going to be the same reason why the pedals rotate in steaps while rolling it backwards. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9yvcke-An4&t=165s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9yvcke-An4&t=165s)
r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? I know mate, mine dosen't always do it, but its always doing it on the 12 speed when I have it in the lowest gear. Your electric is 12 speed, you non electric as 6 speed, you're already looking at 2 diffrent gearing systems where the only common factor is the BWR ratio in the hub, the hub itself is not the same. I'd try putting the12 speed in 3 or 4 on the right and trying diffrent gear combos. This seems to just be a quirk of the 12 speed system where the tollerances are migh tighter.

r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? it means I have to manually reposition the pedals every time before folding the bike to avoid the chain rubbing or getting stuck. Honestly, that feels a bit inconvenient, especially for a bike that’s designed to be quick and easy to fold. It kind of defeats the purpose of the whole "fold-and-go" concept.
r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? My concern is whether this level of stiffness is normal when the bike is in a folded or partially folded position. If it is, then why doesn’t the same issue occur on my non-electric C Line, which uses the same internal gear hub? If I always need to manually reposition the pedals before folding the bike to avoid chain tension or rubbing, that seems like a design flaw
r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? it could be, but the question is why this happens only in my electric model and not normal c line. as far as I know, they both have the same folding mechanism. this video shows the difference https://imgur.com/a/u3hJ79C#jci7MHB
r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? Do you reposition the pedals every time before folding? In my case, if I forget to do that, the crank won’t spin at all when the bike is folded — so I have to fully unfold the bike, reposition the pedals, and then fold it again. That’s not the case at all with my other non-electric C Line, which folds and unfolds smoothly without needing to worry about pedal position.
r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? Thank you for sharing, I shared this post with dealer and they tried that in second attempt but couldn't solve it
r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? In my case, they even replaced the rear hub — at my own expense (255€) — but the issue is still not resolved. When I called the dealer again, they basically told me, "That’s all we could do for this problem." I then contacted Brompton directly, shared all the photos, videos, and documentation, and waited almost two months. Their response? "Take it to a dealer." So now I’m stuck in this endless loop between the dealer and Brompton, with no real solution, and a bike that still doesn’t function properly — despite being almost brand new. It’s incredibly frustrating.
r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? Yes, the bike is new — it has only about 550 km on it. I actually did take it to an authorized Brompton dealer (BOC Bremen), and they diagnosed the issue, replaced the rear hub, and charged me 255€. They also opened a support ticket with Brompton directly. Unfortunately, Brompton responded by saying the issue was due to “wear and tear,” which I find hard to accept for a bike with such low mileage. When I followed up with Brompton asking for reimbursement, they told me it was a matter between me and the dealer — even though the dealer was following their instructions. So yes, I brought it to Brompton through the proper channel, but sadly the support experience has been very disappointing.

r/Brompton · Is now a bad time to buy an electric C line? I ordered an electric C-Line in June in the UK assuming i’d get the new greenway battery that comes on the G-Line, but it came with the BMZ battery. Bit disappointing, but the BMZ has usb phone charging and the greenway doesn’t. I could still upgrade to a greenway later if needed. The C-Line electric is heavy enough already, the G-Line must be a beast. I tested a standard G-Line and it was massive when folded compared to the C-Line. That was the main reason i went for a C-Line and when i tested it I was surprised that the weight of the battery and motor combo on the front helped with stability over the standard C-Line. The C-Line 12 speed also has more gears than the G-Line. I bought electric because there are massive hills where i live, but in London I’d probably be tempted to go for a standard C-Line. But so far I’m happy with the C-Line electric, as long as it lasts, but that remains to be seen

r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? Maybe the “derailleur” (i don’t really now what to call it but the metal plate that switches between the two sprockets) is rubbing against the little wheel to much causing friction and making it stick. You can try to adjust it but it’s a bit finicky if you’re not that mechanically inclined id just take it back to the shop.

r/Brompton · Electric c vs p line: help me decide which one to get I regret getting electric P line instead of C line. My partner has C line and it hasn’t had many issues at all, but since owning a P line for just over a year it’s had to be fixed so many times for random issues rgat never occurred in the C line that was bought in 2021 and used much more for longer distances. I won’t list the exact issues here but I’m short hinge issues, wheels, breaks, chain issues… you name it :( I recommend getting a C line any day. It’s much more robust, durable and heavy duty it feels. And the weight difference is only minimal if you don’t plan on lifting it much in general.

r/Brompton · Question: Brompton P-Line Electric 4 Gearshift "enough"? I have a C-line electric and completely agree. I use one gear 99% of the time, gets me up most hills with the level 3 assist. At 20% the other 3 gears are useful. Can’t really see the point in a 12sp electric.

r/Brompton · Solar camping with a Brompton Electric G-Line Thank you. I don’t plan wild camping so as long as I can reach the destination... There’s also the possibility to charge while having a drink or lunch depending on the itinerary of course. At least it’s possible with such battery (not in the downtube). But certainly not as cool as the solar panels! Today we cycled 40km, mostly flat and just the large front bag with tools and water but again the C line (front motor) used less than 20% of the battery in mode 1. What’s the Ortlieb roll bag on your rack ?
r/Brompton · Solar camping with a Brompton Electric G-Line Thanks for sharing this and great video! I’ve been looking at the Electric G Line and based on our experience with an electric C Line I thought the range on flat sections shouldn’t be an issue. I know it’s difficult to give a number but without the solar charging what range would you get in 1st assistance level? Is it an option to ride with assistance off? Once loaded, do you feel like you need to use maximum assistance in every climb?

r/ebike · Does a folding e-bike actually make you ride more? I’ve owned both a blix vika (former) and a brompton electric c (current). My wife has a blix with a basket attachment. Both fold up small enough to fit in the back of our car. The brompton folds small enough that I could actually drop it behind the passenger seat and still have room for a person in back. We’ve taken them on small road trips before (provided we’re staying in urban areas), and both were small enough to stow at my office in my cube (the brompton can fit neatly under my desk. Weight wise the cheaper bikes are often pushing past 60 pounds. You can get it down below 50 or 40 pounds but it’s gonna cost you. My Vika was about 55 lbs with the battery installed, think the brompton clocks in at about 37? There are other options like Tern, GoCycle,l and Dahon as well, but tern didn’t feel like a huge improvement over the blix vika, gocycle was nice but proprietary and Dahon has some solid folders but I can’t speak to their electric bike as I wasn’t able to test it.

r/Brompton · Electric G line vs C Line: Comfort? I tried the G line, and to be honest it just felt like a Dahon to me, and seemed clunkier fold wise, not to mention heavier. I love my C line electric, and though I am not riding in London right now, to me it seems like a better London bike than the G.

r/foldingbikes · Ado air 20 pro Vs *used* Brompton C-Line Electric I have had the Air Pro 20 for approx 3 weeks. I will say it feels less like a folding bike the ride is super smooth with the 2 gear system. I will say it is a little bulky I don't think it would be as seamless to hop from train to street in comparison to a brompton. But I am honestly so happy with this bike.

r/Brompton · Changing chainring on 12-Speed Brompton Electric C Line Support said it's fine as long as it's a brompton chainring. Didn't say anything about non-brompton, which I assume was intended. In any case, that means that there is nothing inherently wrong with changing the chainring on an 12 speed electric c line.
r/Brompton · Changing chainring on 12-Speed Brompton Electric C Line Oh, funny, I just watched a video of yours about changing the chainring. Your channel is amazing, by the way. Great work! Anyway, I tried a bit of riding yesterday in a semi-hilly area without the assistance and I think you might be right. I was in speed 1 or 2 quite a bit and I need them. But speed 12, while nice, doesn't feel like something I really need. So it might well be that if I have smaller chainring there is no reason to go back.
r/Brompton · Changing chainring on 12-Speed Brompton Electric C Line Thank you! I think it might not have been clear enough in the post—I just edited it to make it clearer—that I'm mainly looking for a smaller chainring because I'm thinking about using it without assistance as well, e.g. electric for commuting, without for weekend riding, etc. Similar to a co-poster, your answer sounds like there is nothing wrong with just trying it. The work seems minimal, and I'm happy to spend 20 bucks on a new chain if need be for the experiment. I'm not sure if its possible (or easy) to insert the the old links again if I shorten the chain.

r/foldingbikes · Just purchased my first bicycle after not riding for nearly 2 decades! Folding bikes and multi-modal transport in the city is AWESOME! Also, its freaky how light electric bikes can be without sacrificing on range. Any tips or advice to a new owner who's also new to cycling? You probably need to move the locking block a turn so it contacts the wheel better. Look up guides the bike shouldn't unfold while the seat is lowered

r/Brompton · Test-Ride Electric G-Line in SF East Bay, California? Thanks for your reply and impressions. I ended up buying a Vektron since there was a great deal on Upway for a used Gen 3 S10. Rode some 9 miles on the Vektron today, verdict's still out on how I feel about it. I test rode the acoustic G-Line last year and it was one of the most comfortable bikes I've ever ridden. Sublime really. The Vektron is nice, but so far not dramatically more stable than my electric C-line is (of course it rolls over bumps much more smoothly). I was also a bit surprised to find the weight distributions isn't as centered as I expected for a mid drive, perhaps because the vektron's rear end is so overbuilt. My C-line electric feels better balanced. I have other bi-folds before so I knew the fold wasn't going to be as elegant as the Brompton, and Tern does some things better than most, but yeah in person the G-line is in a different league of neatness. I probably wouldn't want to take the G-line onto a packed rush-hour subway (I'm in NYC), but it' would be doable. On the vektron it feels like more of a "only if I have no other choice" situation. Still, I probably can't justify the 5K+tax for the G-Line electric, especially since I can't even use my two first-gen C-Line batteries on it, sighs. The Bosch motor is very nice too.

r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? The issue in the video normally raised by the tension of the shifter/ chain tensioner instead of wheel set hub. And I don't think a brand new brompton will have the issue you described. The resistance by backpedaling could be caused by the chain line issue as the chain length is either too long or too short so the tensioner can not correctly hold the correct chain line.

r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? Sorry, but it’s not the same. If your chain slackens when moving the pedals while folded, you have a problem that can be fixed. If your want to keep yours like that, that’s fine. I fixed it on mine.
r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? Just because it’s the same with yours it’s not a good advice to accept as it is. This behaviour sucks hard and takes out a lot of fun if the bike. @ OP: There are a couple solutions for this and my first bet is releasing some torque on the cone (non-gear side). Use a 17 wrench and open the inner nut about 1/8 twist while mounted. That should do the trick. (Also check if the rim gets too slack).

r/Brompton · Is this level of rear wheel stiffness normal on a Brompton Electric C Line? That's the thing and why I mentioned the gear you fold the bike in. Sometimes I forget to position the pedals properly before I fold, and if I'm in the "incorrect" gear, I would get the same result as in your video. But, sometimes if I have been into a different gear, and I forget to position them before folding, the issue is not present and the only difference is the gear, so I suggest you try that. I do try to remember to position them properly before I fold though but oftentimes I forget haha.

r/Brompton · Changing chainring on 12-Speed Brompton Electric C Line Adding an electric motor to a Brompton makes a huge difference to how it handles hills, which, in turn, dramatically changes how people feel about riding up them. Basically, I think your chances of riding the bike up hills *without* using the motor to help you do it, are pretty skinny. For this reason, I would hold off making an all-time modification to the bike, in order to make it easier to do something you will do very rarely, if at all. This is my opinion. Note: I own two bikes. One is a standard Brompton, the other is an electric, but not a Brompton.

r/Brompton · Electric G-Line vs C-Line you could get a 20" r/BrompNOTs and add an electric kit or get one that's electric (dahon k-feather is the only one that comes to mind, but only single speed) since you're just putting it in the car, i don't think you'd need to go to 16" and think the 20" would make the most sense. having said that, I have a 16" cranston r9 max and have ridden a c-line and I don't feel it's super twitchy. But I can ride my bike without hands for a second or two and often hold the handlebar with one hand. I have some friends who can't ride a bike without hands, so I could see them feeling the c-line is too twitchy.
