r/Tapo · First Impressions of the Tapo H500: Potential, but Still a Work in Progress

Since it's a French shop, I'll answer in French. I'm sure auto-translate from Reddit will be enough if you want to read this part anyway.

r/Tapo · First Impressions of the Tapo H500: Potential, but Still a Work in Progress

If you already own an H200, you might consider selling it second-hand ? The H500 is essentially an evolution of the H200. In my view, the H500 functions more like a mini NAS, with the option to add a hard drive and enhanced camera recognition features. Although I’m not certain about the exact hardware inside, given its price and capabilities, I suspect it uses a chip similar to Google Coral. What also caught my attention about the H500 is its HDMI output, allowing it to serve as a standalone mini surveillance station. Have you had the chance to test the H500, particularly its facial recognition or person-tracking features across multiple cameras?

I gave up. Now it's off. I think that this was more of a marketing thing.... This Ai needs a lot of improvement. Actually, there's a lot to improve with the h500.

    r/Tapo · H500 vs Micro SD

I have an h500 and sd cards as redundancy just in case anything goes wrong with the network. I've got some cheaper sandisk extreme since it won't be constantly recording on it. I've had some instances when the cameras record on them for a bit, despite having great signal and having the some cameras connected directly to the hub and neither the cams or the router or even the h500 have an auto reboot on... So... You must factor in the cost of a hub and an ssd, against some sd cards that will last, depending on their size, a couple of years. The hub Ai is rubbish. You can't set crossing lines or have some other more advanced Ai features that some cameras have. You have the option to view live footage on a tv or set it up to view in every tv in your home (with a lot of work) but you can do that with the app anyway. Another thing is.. I have a Gigabit network as most of us do and sometimes the hub is lagging for no reason. It's not horrible but it could be much better. I bought it as an easy setup nvr kind of thing and as that it works ok. Just my humble and honest opinion from my experience.

r/Tapo · Tapo cameras in external storage

The h500 can only have 4 cameras recording 24/7 but it can have 16 cameras recording events only. You'll need to buy a hard drive for it. With that many cameras... I believe that there are better and more cost effective solutions. The h500 is nothing to write home about. It's a pretty basic machine. Even the Ai is basic. There are cameras with better Ai than the h500. Of course that you can add sensors and plugs. Only you can judge if it's worth considering...

    r/Tapo · H500 Facial Recognition

In this example yes, but i have Qhd and 4k cameras and the 4k have the same errors... They sometimes don't even detect my schnauzer... Well.. The dog is grey and the outside is concrete but i can see it and the Ai doesn't... Also... It detects people at night (that aren't there) if an insect flies by or at the slightest fog or rain... So... A lot to be improved..

    r/Tapo · H500 Facial Recognition

Totally agree. The Ai is the same as in the cameras themselves. I've tried to "teach" it, both on the cameras and on the hub and it's the same. The hub could do so much more but tapo is doing it's own thing... They prefer to release new stuff with those new features, instead of integrating them on the existing software... It's more profitable that way...

Don't forget to isolate all iots from your network! You can add the hard-drive later. It's not difficult to format it and run it after installation. Watching live footage is only possible on hdmi or with another screen that supports usb-c like a tablet or just a "dumb screen", other than that, only using the app, preferably in the same isolated network to get really low latency.

Nothing changed in my setup and i used to be able to connect with the app on that same iot network. I don't know if it's the hub or the app but something changed. Nothing changed in the router, maybe i need to setup the hub again using first the wifi and then connecting the ethernet cable... It has both networks configured 2.4ghz and 5ghz and it's on cable... r/Tapo · Tapo hub H200 with C200 and C320WS cameras for recording ?

H500 hub supports 2.5" hard drives which will last longer. I would put an SD card in each, doesn't need to be high endurance, that's mostly a farce for micro SD cards. Use those cheap cards as a backup if your hub HDD dies. Then get the h500 hub with an SDD in it

r/Tapo · How to tell if recording to h500?

I mean.... Can you see recordings? Assuming you don't have a subscription, don't have cloud, then yeah if you can see them it's recording them.

Yup. But no reason to get a hub. If it's all internal just get SD cards, it all will work exactly the same unless you really want your doorbell clips stored on the hub and not on a local SD card

r/Tapo · Question regarding TP link CCTV cameras + TP link hubs

how many cameras? Record 24x7 or clips? I assume 24x7. Just know they only support 4 max for 24x7, also the H500 hub has better camera support. I can't speak for the h200 but the h500 can do direct wifi connection or over wifi or over ethernet as long as they can talk to eachother on the network. if the hub or your wifi go down, it will fail over to the other that is available. IMO h500 is worth it as it supports a 2.5" SSD

    r/Tapo · H500 hub reviews?

I have a support ticket open and they have not said it takes time, they said it should immediately detect strangers. It's not new though, eufy has been doing this with their cheaper s380 hub for over a year

    r/Tapo · H500 hub reviews?

We did multiple test clips with strangers and friendlies, and it didn't detect a single one after initially detecting them a few days ago. Two different cameras to test.

    r/Tapo · H500 hub reviews?

H500 only supports 4x 24x7 recording so "every single camera" would be limited to 4 if your goal is 24x7 and not clips

    r/Tapo · H500 hub reviews?

It's does. I'm actually a big wyze user, 15 cameras, home alarm system with 30 sensors, bulbs galore. I've been making my way towards other systems just not sure yet. I have 2 tapo cameras for testing, 2 reolink, and 1 eufy. I also have 20 or so tapo smart switches already. Just not sure the 3x price is worth it for the h500 hub vs the 200 yet. Basically h500 supports larger better storage and matter support and largely untested facial recognition. H200 has native home assistant integration h500 doesn't yet. Does the h500 do 24x7 recording with all those cameras or just events only? Are there other smart actions/automations you can do with the hub you can't do with individual cameras? Is there a centralized events area for clips from other cameras or are those still only visible by going to each camera?

    r/Tapo · H500 hub reviews?

I'm not asking you to help me. You're defending it when every single person on this sub with an h500 has said the facial recognition just doesn't work

r/Tapo · The H500 is useless for supporting only 4 continuous cameras recording

The H500 is fantastic for the price. It is PnP, has AI facial recognition and completely eliminates the need for a subscription service. It also connects to multiple sensors, locks and doorbells if you go deep into the Tapo ecosystem. If you need 24/7 monitoring on more than 4 cameras then you’d be better off with a professionally installed wired home security system. You could have 4 cameras recording 24/7 in your high traffic / critical areas and have up to 12 additional cameras set to event recording on less critical area. Alternatively, if you have cameras at each end of the house, get a second H500 and cluster 4 cameras to each one with the cameras connected directly to the hub rather than via your home wifi.

The hub can connect to wifi as well, so you only need a power cable. The traffic is surprisingly little, knowing the ethernet port is only 100mbps, wifi will do fine. (mine is wired though) I don't use the hdmi feature. If you use the hdmi stream on battery powered camera's, the stream will go to sleep to save camera battery and there is no setting to ignore that. So you have to power the camera's to enjoy 24/7 hdmi stream. My doorbell is permanently wired in with "always-on" mode and I still can't do 24/7 streaming because it thinks it runs on battery, probably a software bug. 24/7 recording is fine. Most of their camera's (including my doorbell) have a built in local account if you enable it. You can access the camera through RTSP protocol with third party apps/nvr's with the camera credentials directly to the ip-address. Be aware that you have to configure some ports if you want this outside the local network (I won't make this public if I were you). https://preview.redd.it/kb09tkgbmlpg1.png?width=980&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d28cda9d36656813513fc5d0bce8146d50415c0

I have no regrets. Be aware though that continuous recording is only supported up to 4 camera's at a time. Event recording is supported up to 16 cameras. I have 24/7 recording of my doorbell (2K 5MP) and I get 46 days on a 1 TB SSD. If you go for a spinning disk, make note that the hub will make the typical hard disk noise. Don't put it in a closed space, I have mine well ventilated and the disk still gets to 53°C.

I setup my H500 2 days ago and had the same setup as you and I can confirm it didn’t work. I had to move my cameras on the main wifi and you’ll need to reset all your cameras for this, TP Link doesn’t allow change of wifi otherwise. The problem is that the Hub won’t be able to find the cameras on a different network (guest wifi in this instance) and cameras in the guest wifi won’t be allowed to communicate with the hub. Even if you put the hub in the guest network, still they won’t be able to talk to each other as typically network discovery is not allowed on guest network. Hope that makes sense?

I can also chuck it somewhere in the network rack in my garage but then I am afraid I won’t use it to the full potential (HDMI port for Live streaming on a screen), answering video door bell etc etc. Thoughts?

r/Tapo · New to Tapo and I have a couple questions

As I understand how it all works, yes you can do everything you want with that setup. I currently have almost all of that, plus wireless cameras (don't do 24/7 recording) so I can tell you my experience at least. 1. I have a 1TB generic SSD drive in the H500. I don't have a clue what brand or model but it works perfect. I didn't bother to look at the "recommended" list because it's a SSD drive and if it's too slow, I will find out quickly. No issues. 2. According to Tapo, with 4 cameras (that is the max live recording you can do on the H500) it will record about 20 days of 24/7 recording with a 1TB drive. I would go bigger if you need that 4x 24/7. I have a 16" monitor hooked up to the H500 that splits the screen in 4 per the settings I setup and shows the 1 camera I have at Live 24/7 and the others are notification only due to the battery powered versions that they are. 3. Tapo does say that it requires a wired camera to do the 24/7 recording but also mentions that not all will support it. You may want to ask Tapo directly if the C120 supports that recording to the H500 hub. I know other indoor cams like the C211's I have will do it, but I would ask to be absolutely sure. 4. I have the D225 camera and it works great. Be sure to set zones or areas to watch as the battery does drop a bit faster than other cameras. Mine has been in use about 3 weeks in total, has about 10-12 notifications per day, and is at about 60% battery right now. That's not horrible considering what it does, but in that same period of time, I have three C460's recording notifications only at 4k and they are still at 80% in that same time frame. I know you won't have camera batteries but depending on the settings and notifications you have setup, I would expect 6-8 weeks per charge on the doorbell. Ultimately I think you'll be very pleased with that setup, but please make sure with Tapo that the C120 cameras support 24/7 recording via that H500. That's the only part I am not certain about with what you want to do. Everything else should be fine.

    r/Tapo · H500 Hub new setup question

I use a 1TB internal drive. The process is easier if you wait and set it all up together. You can do it separately but setting up the hub first as you will have it, makes it easier. Yes it is only through HDMI. I have a 16” IPS monitor with hdmi and usb c for power. Sure it sucks a bit to use two cables but that’s how it is setup.

    Installation facileStockage local
    r/Tapo · Tapo H500 reboot

I have the same roughly with a few extra and I don’t reboot mine unless the screen I have attached to it freezes. That’s a rare thing though. Maybe once a month it will freeze I also have a 1TB ssd and I’ve had this all running nearly five months. The SSD has 295gb available right now and has not filled up once yet. I get at least 125 notifications for motion a day and it still is very efficient about how much space is used. It would be nice if Tapo would let me delete from the SSD by month or something so I can get rid of the older stuff

    Stockage local
    r/Tapo · HomeBase H500 usage recommendations

Echo show sucks in my opinion. I have a 15.6” 2.5k portable monitor. Powers up via usbc from the hub and it came with the hdmi to mini hdmi cable it needs to work. I don’t have it sitting on the hub because the angle wasn’t right but the monitor has its own stand and is set to the right angle that way. Works perfectly and shows what I need it to and a good resolution

r/Tapo · The H500 is useless for supporting only 4 continuous cameras recording

More than 4 continuous recordings and you need POE cameras and an actual NVR with proper storage and software. I personally had one setup like that in my old home and while it was nice, 90% or more of the time, it is just recording nothing. It was nice to have the cameras both powered and driven by just one Cat6 cable, but they were not intuitive and weren't able to detect as well as the Tapo cameras and H500 can. I have two cameras recording full time and the rest set to only record notifications. It is a very straight forward and simple system. If you need something more, get a more professional system. Lastly, I would guess that Tapo limits this to 4 cameras because of the amount of data that will have to be transferring at a constant rate across your network. Add that to the read/write speed of most drives and the hardware built into the H500 and you can easily see why they would limit it. No reason to have more when the vast majority of their demographic audience, doesn't need it.

    r/Tapo · Question on the H500 hub

I've got the H500 hooked up to 7 cameras total (4 motion & 3 continuous), a doorbell camera, and a door lock as well. I only have used the internal SSD for storage. I did not look at any compatibility list of any kind. I already had a 1TB drive from my Eufy HomeBase that I was getting rid of, plugged it in, formatted, done. No issues. Furthermore, I have a 16" 2.5k IPS screen hooked up to the H500 for viewing. I don't have any issues with it at all. The resolution is a bit off because the cameras are 4k and the screen is 2.5k, but that's nothing that really bothers me at all. I don't use any IOT network. I just have a Deco Mesh WiFi7 setup that works perfectly. The hub is about 10 feet from one Node and the cameras are all within 20 feet of the Node they are attached to as well. I never have issues with slow connection, slow response time, signal drops, etc. I do have a 1Gbps both up and down for my internet service, but I'm still limited by how fast the equipment itself can go. Ultimately, this hub could be better, but it is definitely already better than the Eufy option that I trashed. It runs everything very smoothly and I personally don't need more than 4 cameras live at once so it isn't a big issue for me, yet. I would assume at some point they will expand that or who knows, maybe come out with something else. For now, the H500 works extremely well and for most people I'm sure it will be more than enough.

r/Tapo · Do Tapo 4k cameras and H500 hub have sufficient quality and reliability to serve as home security camera system, when it really matters?

I'm sure solar would work great, they make kits or add-ons for most cameras that can add solar. I've just been so impressed with the longevity of the cameras batteries that I haven't even really thought about it honestly. I've tried the connection both with the H500 hooked up via Cat6e and fiber internet or just using the WiFi mesh system I have. Very little to no change noticed. All the power lines in my neighborhood are buried in the ground so we have maybe 10 minutes a year without power. I have numerous power banks and blocks and UPS backups if need be though. The 4k pan/tilt cameras I have are the C560WS. It has a POE Ethernet port or a regular 120V port on it as well in case you want to power it via Ethernet. Lastly, I use a 1TB basic 2.5" SSD in the H500. No SD cards in any cameras at all. Everything runs to the H500 for recording. I get at least 100 recordings a day, mostly at 4k, and I formatted the drive on February 9th. I still have 343GB available on the drive. I will eventually either delete (a feature Tapo could add here) just a few months of recordings or will just mass delete it all when it gets close. It will of course just roll over and keep recording if I don't delete, but I don't think I need recordings from February and March anymore

r/Tapo · Do Tapo 4k cameras and H500 hub have sufficient quality and reliability to serve as home security camera system, when it really matters?

Is it good enough? For most of us, YES! Will it work for you? Only you can answer that. Buy one of the 4k cameras, put it where you would put it, set it up in the app without the hub, and see how you like it. Personally I have a home where I had EVERYTHING with Eufy and threw it all in the trash and went with Tapo. The 4k camera quality is much better, the app is faster, the hub is better (mirroring and recording it better), and while there are some features I wish Tapo had in the app, it isn't a make or break reason to not buy them. My entire setup is on a mesh WiFi 7 system. I have two 4k pan/tilt cameras that are powered, two 4k bullet cameras that are battery powered, two C211 in the house that are of course wired, a 2k video door bell, a thumbprint enabled door lock, and the H500 connected to it all running it. Attached to the H500 i have a 2.5k 15" monitor used to live monitor the powered cameras and motion monitor the others. I have every camera on the highest of settings and frequencies to check for motion and anything else it will do. The battery life on everything is AMAZING. Both of my battery cameras have yet to be charged and I'm about 2-3 months in. The doorbell unfortunately requires it about once a month due to the activity but that's not an issue for me at all. All in all, the Tapo setup is just going to get better and hopefully features will improve as well. Eufy made it clear many times they don't care about their customers and their cameras and batteries leave a LOT to be desired.

    r/Tapo · H500 hub reviews?

I just switched to Tapo from Wyze this week. Bought 4 cameras, the H500, and a wifi deadbolt. Was tired of Wyze’s subscriptions and how poorly their cameras work without them. Tapo’s camera recognition (people, vehicles, pets) without an addon subscription being necessary is huge. The H500 hub tying everything together is even more huge. It eliminates the need for cloud storage and sd cards completely and acts as a local storage server. I installed a 2tb ssd 2.5” drive, which was super simple (1 screw and plug and play for the drive) in the H500. 3 of my 4 new cameras worked out of the box (with firmware updates) with the hub, only my C260 does not, but it’s scheduled for a firmware update within the month to make it compatible. Tapo has a compatibility list on their site that lists what works now, and when updates are coming for those that don’t. The H500 also acts as hub for Tapo’s sub-g wireless sensors, which is another feature I like. I just ordered 2 of their door contact sensors to take advantage of this feature, but don’t have them yet. The hub also gives the option of adding specific face recognition to your cameras, but I haven’t used that yet. It supports wireless or wired connection to your network, I’m using a wired Ethernet connection. Setup was extremely easy. For $150 bucks, I think the hub takes your home security setup to the next level. It’s a new product, so it’s not yet compatible yet with all of their cameras (like my C260), but I’m very impressed and happy thus far. I hope this helps.

r/Tapo · Tapo cameras: Is there a way to set the duration of motion-triggered recordings?

I told them to change it for hubs, it's using local WiFi so I don't understand for that limitation at all, it's not using their servers at all. Because of it I'm forced to use continuous recording, I will never trust these short clips. It should be at least 30 seconds for the shortest clip, or the same length as for camera SD card events.

    r/Tapo · D235 and H200 or H500

Friend has the D235 and the H200 and it goes down so often it is useless. The doorbell is within 5 feet of the router as well, so loss of signal is complete BS. They also have their wifi networks split so the 5g and the 2.4 are separate. The H200 is also hardwired. They are also using a high endurance SD card.. I can't recommend the H500 as it's a joke for what you pay for it. Tapo needs to release a real NVR, and not just a hub.

    r/Tapo · H500 questions - will it help me

As stated, do not buy the H500 for facial recognition as it's garbage. Tapo had real NVRs at CES that were an upgrade, and they apparently decided to shelve them. The processing power required for accurate facial recognition is not available for cheap, yet.

    r/Tapo · Question on the H500 hub

The H500 is not a true NVR, it's a joke. 4 cameras, with a possible upgrade to 6 with a firmware update in the "future" with the rest of the cameras only being motion...Then add that it only takes 2.5" drives, and the drives need to be on the compatibility list to ensure it works, which with the work around for a 3.5" means you may not be able to make your chose 3.5" work with it a crap shoot. The Tapo NVR810P 8 channel NVR they had at CES in 2025 would have been perfect as it handled both wifi and hard wired cameras. It also had all the AI features that the H500 has. Yes Frigate is a PITA to setup, and the annual sub for Blue Iris is for software updates, maintenance and support. Once you buy the license for the software, you are done, and you decide whether you want to pay for updates, support and maintenance after 1 year. There are plenty of guides for Frigate, but in all honesty, it needs to be more "I'm a moron" friendly, but once you do get it setup, it is far more powerful than anything Tapo offers.

    r/Tapo · Question on the H500 hub

No it is not worth it. The H500 is a joke and should never have been released. Tapo had a real 8 channel NVR at CES, and according to support in this sub, they decided to deep six it for some god awful reason (probably to push the AI and subscription crap). If anything you would be better off going the route of making your own NVR with open source software like Frigate or closed source like Blue Iris.

    r/Tapo · H500 vs Micro SD

You should let Tapo know that you want a real NVR, and not that joke they call the H500. You should stick with SD cards and do 24-7 sadly as motion detection always misses important events. Plenty of horror stories of people having their cars broken into, their garage, etc and the good old motion only capture missed everything.

    Détection IAStockage local
r/Tapo · Do Tapo 4k cameras and H500 hub have sufficient quality and reliability to serve as home security camera system, when it really matters?

The hub is severely limiting for recording as it can only handle 4-6 cameras recording 24-7 pending on the firmware, and the rest of the cameras will be motion detection only. You can go with the cameras themselves if you want to save some money, but get a real NVR instead of the H500 hub. Figure you would want at least 3 cameras on the house (front yard, back yard, on side), 3 on the garage (main doors, man door, inside), and whatever in your garden area. I would personally go with the C575D in every place possible if you want 4k as the dual cams cover such a large area and the motion tracking will ensure you catch almost everything.

r/Tapo · Unsure whether to go with the H500 or whether I'd be throwing money away.

And people need to stop defending companies that hand us crap products. Your compliance is why their corporate side thinks it's perfectly ok to hand us crap. It's funny how other companies have 8 channel NVR's that are cheaper than the H500, and yet people still think it's a great buy when it's a joke of a product.

That's the neet thing, you don't. The H500 is a hub that has become a pseudo NVR, and it doesn't do it well. If you want them on your PC your best bet is just bite the bullet and setup Frigate or Blue Iris and use their superior detection settings.

r/Tapo · The H500 is useless for supporting only 4 continuous cameras recording

The amount of data transferring across the wireless network is nothing. Most of the cameras don't even break 6mbit (750kb/s) when there is action and continuous recording with zero events is under 200kb/s. Even the 4k cameras use very little bitrate. Tapo has NVR's in their VIGI line that can handle up to 32 wireless cameras with continuous recording, and have 16 of them streaming at once.. The H500 is a joke, and should never have been marketed the way it has been.

r/Tapo · New to Tapo and I have a couple questions

It only accepts 2.5" drives, and has no airflow so your drives overheat. The USB port is only for dumping video, not recording. The unit can only do 24-7 recording from a max of 4 cameras, and the other 12 it supports can only be of motion events. It constantly has issues with losing communication with the cameras and sensors. The AI is half baked and doesn't work most of the time. The NVR's they had a CES 2025 had full AI abilities (including rich descriptions) with no need for the cloud, supported 8 cameras wired or wireless, and used 3.5" drives. I surmise it might be the Tapo NVR810P, but finding anything other than marketing materials or the instruction manual is rather difficult. When I asked the staff here about it, they stated that it might have been dropped and the H500 became the faux NVR it is now. https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/cloud-camera/tapo-nvr810p/

    r/Tapo · H500 Hub new setup question

r/Tapo · Tapo better than Eufy?

The H500 is a joke and no one should buy it. Tapo should release a REAL NVR. They had one at CES, and they've apparently decided to bury it.

r/Tapo · The H500 is useless for supporting only 4 continuous cameras recording

There are "future plans" to update it to allow up to 6. I've chimed in about this joke of a device, and it appears most of the community here are happy with this neutered POS. It's a slap in the face to users, and should never have been released. I have the H500 and use it primarily for local storage, and it’s worked well for that. I also tried the facial recognition feature, but I ended up disabling it because it wasn’t very reliable with my newer Tapo cameras. One feature I do appreciate is that the H500 can act as a backup Wi-Fi connection for your cameras, which adds a little extra reliability if your primary connection has issues. Overall, I’m happy with the H500 and don’t regret buying it. That said, if facial recognition is the main reason you’re considering it, I think you might be disappointed. At least with my setup, that feature just hasn’t lived up to expectations.

To start with I did have a few instances where it reported there were "network issues".... initially I had the D235 connecting to the H500 directly (using it's own hot-spot) but there's a few walls between the two devices and wasn't sure how strong that signal was, so I changed the D235 to connect to my normal wi-fi network. r/Tapo · What are great long-term local storage solutions for the TP-Link Tapo C120s besides Micro SD?

It depends on how much storage you need. If you run out of space, it will automatically loop-record (as long as you have that option enabled). I’m using a spare 256 GB SSD, and it gives me about a week of recordings before the loop kicks in but I also have five cameras, so that affects the duration. Some people use an external WD Purple surveillance HDD instead, since there are reports that the H500 can wear out an SSD over time because SSDs aren’t designed for continuous recording.

Hello, 1. It’s difficult to say for sure whether the V1 models will work unless someone has specifically tested them. 2. I have the H500, and aside from supporting up to 16 cameras and 56 sensors, the biggest advantage is that it functions as an NVR. You can install an SSD in it for continuous recording, which means you don’t need cloud storage or individual SD cards in each camera. 3. The H500 is very straightforward to set up. You add it to the Tapo app, and it automatically detects your cameras without requiring you to set them up again.

I have had the H500 for over a month now, with 10 cameras. I don’t record continuously. I installed a cheap 1TB drive that cost me less than buying a bunch of smaller, high quality micro SD cards. Also, I didn’t need to climb the ladder to install the cards in the floodlight cameras, nor will I need to replace them should one go bad. Because the videos are stored to the drive in the H500 and the H500 is connected to my router via ethernet, I have found that clip playback is a much improved. As far as long-term storage goes, saving anything to a single drive is not a suitable long-term solution; however, the H500 has a USB port for manual backups. Depending on what you’re trying to accomplish, this might be good enough. Initial reviews were not favorable. The firmware was not great from what I understand and the purpose of the product is rather confusing. The H500 does add other features, such as AI recognition for older cameras, adding sensors, etc.

Thanks, I've looked at the H500 and it seems very underwhelming for the price (CAD$199). I like the idea of the HDMI output for live viewing, but all my cameras are solar or battery, so live streaming is out of the question. I would need to factor in $ for a 2.5" drive as I don't have any spare and I have read the AI functionality is pretty spotty so the only benefit would be the additional device count. I think Ill just get another H200 (CAD$36) for my 2 x C645D's and call it a day, as I have plenty of SD Cards lying around.

Which TBH, would be cheaper than getting local storage for my C645D's due to current pricing. Currently they are just sitting there watching my yard generating alerts. Very much no, but I suppose it is possible with any device losing power unexpectedly. Before resetting, I may have recommended just manually rebooting or reseating the drive to see if the hub just couldn't read it on first boot before assuming the drive was corrupted, and footage lost. Once the drive is formatted, everything is removed from the drive and previous recordings erased, so it should be a last option.

I spoke with the team and the version that is currently available in your region does not look to have the full feature set shown at CES, but we were told that it will come soon via an update. For camera recording limits, the maximum amount of cameras will change depending on the recording type the cameras are using. If you have your cameras all set to use 24/7 recording, you will be limited to 4 cameras. If you use cameras that are recording based on events detected (hint: set high sensitivities so it records events consistently, but not constantly), the limit will be increased towards the maximum of 16 cameras. Lastly, we actually announced a full NVR solution at CES that would support multiple 24/7 streams, however I do not have a timeline to give for an approximate release.

r/Tapo · Current Tapo Smart Hub (H200/H500) Compatible Camera List

So I realistically have no insights into the H500 that you have or what features are available as it is a non-US release, it caught our team by surprise that a region has already made it available. It could be that the device has fewer features, or is expecting an update - but I unfortunately do not have any insights. I would recommend reaching out on our global forums as they are the team dealing with the version that you have and may be able to provide an answer. From my experience with the H500, there is quite a bit beyond just local recording such as the AI Empowerment, Facial Recognition, HDMI features, USB Backup, and Matter Controller features. We will begin slowly rolling out our content for the US release of the device soon, and then I can share more details regarding the features available for the H500s US Launch.

r/Tapo · Current Tapo Smart Hub (H200/H500) Compatible Camera List

I think you will be surprised, we have plans for all of the above, and we showed off many of these at CES along with the upcoming hub and NVR For the H200, we have had it for a few years now and was originally used only for specific cameras. Since then, its feature set has expanded to allow a majority of Tapo cameras to record their clips directly to the SD card of the hub, rather than the camera's own SD Card. The H500 is long anticipated due to its ability to act as a faux-NVR and is releasing in just a few months time in the US once firmware and fixes are finalized. It just happens to share the same camera compatibility list with the H200s.

    r/Tapo · Recommendations for 2.5inch SATA HDD/SSD for Tapo H500 (Australia)

I can confirm that the drive from a Seagate portable drive will work in the H500. I had originally put a small SSD in my H500, but wanted more capacity for 24/7 recording. I had an old 1TB Seagate portable drive sitting around, so I pulled it apart and installed it in the H500. Works perfectly fine. On the portable drive I used, the end with the USB connector just pulled right off. I did have to use some tools to pry open the remainder of the case. u/dimspace makes a good point about using a SSD in the H500. The continuous write cycles from 24/7 recording will significantly shorten the lifespan of the drive. When I pulled the SSD out of my H500 it was also quite hot, again from the constant writing.

The latest firmware for C645D cameras is 1.1.8 and for H500 is 1.3.18. BUT ... some cameras and hubs will not updae to this newer version and are stuck on 1.1.7. The v1.1.8 resolves some major camera issues. r/Tapo · Tapo better than Eufy?

Local storage with an optional 2.5” Hard Drive gives you the option to go up to 16TB of storage. If you’ve got a 30 device system, the larger hub is what you’ll need eventually (I think even it only goes up to like 16 cameras). It also allows some “local AI” abilities up to 6 cameras. It’s got basic recognition, so you can set it to not alert on know approved faces, but still alert on unknown or know faces you specify.

r/Tapo · Tapo better than Eufy?

Good point. There are 16TB 2.5” drives, but they’re stupid pricy enterprise grade stuff. With that said, the 2.5” drive option is still a big improvement then being limited to microSD

H200 maxes our on 4 cameras. H500 can have up to 16. H200 uses a micro SD. H500 used hdd or ssd. Significantly better. H500 has better built in ai features that allow your cameras to have better facial recognition or recognition for vehicles or animals or whatever. Tapo 500 also allows you to connect a screen to view 4 camera feeds live 24/7. H500 has an ethernet port to allow for faster video playback as well. If you are going smaller scale then h200 is plenty. If you want a full home security system with many sensors and cameras you need the h500

Mine didn't work perfectly out of the box either. The expendable storage is awesome to be able to host your stuff all locally. It can also double as a doorbell or an alert system for your security cameras or sensors. Got my H500 today. The UK charger is _enormous_ also. It's only 12v/2.0A, maybe Tapo has been fighting the long war against users oblivious to just how bad their home power quality is, whatever. I think I might have liked it to be spun out to a brick with a IEC 60320 connector. I noted your tip that it gets a little hot, so I've plopped mine on a USB-powered laptop cooling pad. I don't know if there is already a fan in there (in my experience, purely passive cooled devices benefit massively from adding a fan, but if it already has one, the additional benefit is marginal) but we'll see. Storage temperature in the Tapo app is reporting at only a few degrees over ambient (despite having two cameras writing to it), but it's only been on for an hour. I had network issues also when connecting existing Tapo devices which the app would insist are not on the same network, which I resolved by simply stubbornly trying again. Somehow, this worked. Yeah, it's a mystery to me too.

That cannot be correct. I received mine today, added 3 C120 cameras I have outside and another indoor camera (C225) , so I am already at 4. It does not say anywhere I am already at capacity. I am expecting a 2TB SSD tomorrow. I see this device as both an NVR and also a "range extender" for my outdoor cameras, since it is much closer to the window than my access point. My plan was to connect the Hub via 5Ghz to my WLAN and then let the cameras decide to use the Hub own 2.4Ghz Network (Backup WIFI Function). So far one camera decided to do this. To me this was important to reduce congestion on the 2.4Ghz band of my access Point (7 cameras connected to the same access point all recording to the cloud causes a bit of traffic). I have no plans to connect it to a TV or monitor via the HDMI so I cannot tell about this. Right now is sitting on my night table and that is it

Thank you - great insights! Will then wire the cameras where this is straight forward, but otherwise rely on the solar/wifi model where its more cumbersome if we had to wire-connect them all the way. Our hub/switch is all powered behind UPS, so that will do in case of power cuts also. Impressive that you have still so much space left on your SSD, so tells me that a 1TB or 2TB size will more than suffice for us here also. Agreed, it would be helpful with a function one day, that maybe could auto-delete recordings more than 3 months old.

Don’t have one, but I did go through this when expanding my setup. If it is cheaper for you to buy an SD card for every single camera separately than an H500 hub, it is not worth it imo. Of course there are benefits to drives than SD cards, but if you run battery cameras, you’re cooked when power goes out and you don’t have a UPS on your H500, which kind of defeats the purpose of “battery” cameras

r/Tapo · What are great long-term local storage solutions for the TP-Link Tapo C120s besides Micro SD?

My experience is similar. I’ve been running the H500 for a couple of months with 5 cameras and the only issue I’ve had is that one of my cameras is not yet compatible with the hub for storing recordings. An update is supposed to be coming, and it’s a camera that the features outweighed the fact that I’ll have to wait a bit to enable the central recording. It’s also not in a high traffic location that triggers a lot of recording (interior of detached garage/shop that stores cars that are not driven daily). The H500 was a breeze to set up, super easy to add addition storage by installing a hard drive, and blends seamlessly into the Tapo environment (apps, etc.). If your main concern is central recording with plenty of storage space, I think you’ll find the H500 does the job well. I can’t speak to the performance of the additional AI features or things like automations, as I haven’t used any of those, but those seemed like the areas where people were underwhelmed in the reviews I read.

r/Tapo · Hub H200 confusion, would I benefit? Wifi backup?

Tapo H500 is better suited. I've had a attempted break in. The face tracking over multiple camera is something I didn't think I'd care for but it's really cool. I use a 1tb SSD and have connected 4 cameras. 4 are AI powered for all the bells and whistles. I put mine as 24/7 recording. The other go to the sd card

In case I wasn't clear in my long winded comment, you can always see the live feed in the app on a phone or tablet. The HDMI live feed is different and I'm looking forward to messing with it soon. Any suggestions on a quality 25ft or so, HDMI cord that can be hidden? 😁

r/Tapo · Hub H200 confusion, would I benefit? Wifi backup?

With that many cameras you might want to check into the h500 hub. Record to SSD, Adds AI to non-AI cameras. Facial recognition... Is a work in progress, but kinda cool. Connect 4 live feeds with HDMI, USB back up. Right now I'm using a cheap 1TB HDD from their list of drives they've tested. 24-7 recording on 3 cameras for a couple months now and so far so good. I'm happy with it.

r/Tapo · Hub H200 confusion, would I benefit? Wifi backup?

Sorry, I haven't used either of those features yet. I have mine sitting out, in like the middle of the house. I'll need a long HDMI cord for that and I'm not set up for that yet. All the paranoia I've read about it running hot has me paranoid , 🙄 so I have it in the open. But I don't feel any heat and don't really hear anything loud. USB transfer is just out, to back up your drive only. As far as I can tell the USB C port only charges a tablet or something. The Tapo Tablet App is nice. The h500 hub is $150, but I did see it on Amazon for $130 and even less for "used like-new" sales. Check for compatibility of your cameras and any drive you get. This hub is definitely a work in progress and I'm enjoying it!

r/Tapo · US vs. EU devices, hubs and their cross-compatibility

I see. Well, I don't really care about buying accessories just 2-3 cameras from the US. They are like half the price. And at least one of them isn't even available in India/UK. That's one of the only reason behind my interest in buying the US variants. But if Hub 500 isn't cross-compatible, odds of H200 seem even lower. Can I ask which cameras you have and if they are still working with the other Hub?

    r/Tapo · H500 hub reviews?

I find the facial recognition the weakest part to it. It does pick people up 70% of the time, but its too inconsistent to be running routines from it etc. It also spots people who should be familar as strangers far too often and sometimes just doesn't spot a face at all.

    r/Tapo · H500 hub reviews?

I think it does 24/7 with 4 cameras. I've only just switched today. I think it looks like a cheap piece of plastic but that's ok as it's inside my TV unit. I like that I can playback clips per face or clips that contain strangers but it's too early to see how well it recognises family. The hub can playback the clips but there is a button for each camera first. It all feels very similar tbh. I still would have got it for SSD support but for the price it deserves to be a metal square puck for some metal cooling. More like a ugreen device. Than a plastic toblarone.

    r/Tapo · C425 solar kit - not impressed

I picked up 2 of these exact same set ups a few weeks ago, and while the camera and solar panel seem decent quality, the detection is garbage. I set mine to only detect people and is mounted on the corner of my garage where it has a clear view of my driveway, porch and front yard. Some people have been able to get to my front door, deliver a package and get back to their van without it picking them up. Other times I'll get a notification and check the recording and all it picked up is 2 seconds of someone walking their dog barely in view. It seems to always notice me walking to my car but doesn't like to detect anyone else. I'm still playing around with the detection areas and sensitivity but so far I'm not left super impressed. I liked the idea of the new h500 hub having facial recognition but after seeing how bad the detection is, I know it won't work and wouldn't be worth the money.

r/Tapo · Current Tapo Smart Hub (H200/H500) Compatible Camera List

i do have them set to 247 recording because there seems to be an issue with the detection recording. with the detection set to max length, footage within the recorded clip is very jumpy and often missing many random seconds of recording within the time period that is supposed to be recorded. thus my 247 recording is to get around this problem.

Turn it on its side. Put the bottom up (well on an angle). The main board and hear sink are below where the drive is (*really* bad design) so the heat will rise up though the drive. Turn it on its side so the heat drifts more up and out and less onto the drive. It’s what I did with mine.

r/SecurityCamera · Security camera needed for my small house under 1k AUD please

    r/Tapo · H500 wont connect to wifi
