r/homeautomation · Looking for a security camera that detects ALL motion and ALL sounds

r/Tapo · Why are you blocking the detection of all sounds and movements on your app?

r/Tapo · Why are you blocking the detection of all sounds and movements on your app?

Hi everyone, MY HERO is called TINYCAM PRO. And thanks to those who helped out. After a lot, lot, lot of research, I found exactly what I was looking for. My perfect match is called tinycam pro. It records everything I want. For video: If I move a toe, I get a notification. Of course, you can adjust the detection sensitivity. For audio: If I fart on my couch, I get a notification. Same thing here, you can adjust the decibel level for detection sensitivity. Now, if someone knocks on the door, I get a notification. THE BEST OF THE BEST with tinycam is that my phone acts as a server. For example, if the camera detects something, it records the video directly onto my phone. I'm going to keep an eye on my battery to make sure it doesn't drain too fast.

r/homeautomation · Looking for a security camera that detects ALL motion and ALL sounds

Actually, I used to use the Alfred Camera app on an old phone before this, but the phone finally died. With Alfred Camera, I got a notification for absolutely anything that moved. I could set up activity zones and tweak the sensitivity. Even when my pellet stove turned on, it would trigger a notification, and it didn't bother me at all. It was the same thing for sounds. For example, if someone rang the doorbell, I would get an alert. Meanwhile, with Tapo, if I ring my own doorbell, I get nothing.

Maybe a humidity or temperature problem? These cameras are not meant for outdoor use. I have had a C220 and a C230 for more than a year and have not noticed this issue.

r/Tapo · Do better than this Tapo

My Tapos (more advanced models, such as the C230) regularly identify the trash bin in front of my house as a person. But what is more annoying is that I get a notification each time a bird approaches the cat food bowl besides my back door, when I just want to know when my cat is there. Tapo offers AI with human face recognition (it works very badly) but no function to distinguish between animal species.

r/Tapo · My honest review about Tapo camera

I'll bite - I even came from a reolink setup before I started working here... I also spoke with our team just to get an idea of the differences/similarities between the two models, and the consensus was that the comparable Tapo model would be the Tapo C260 (which I also have in my home). The C230 is one of our older camera models and doesn't benefit from all of the latest features and improvements. 1- Pinch to Zoom exists FYI. But the smoothness is determined by the network connection of your phone and the camera. Hubs will also help to prevent buffering from interfering. For the most part, clip viewing is one of the things that Tapo does *well.* 2 - If you are having issues with your recorded videos to this extent, I would almost lean towards a network 'issue', or at least that it could be optimized. I haven't seen any similar reports requiring a cache reset in literal years. 3 - This point, I think, is due to the network stream of the camera still being active when trying to access the camera. From the app, there is a finite number of local streams possible, and the one from the previous interaction was likely still 'active'. Also, while you may not store things in the cloud, there is still a handshake that occurs to point your app towards the camera's footage and stream. Bitrate is a tricky topic, and I have no concrete answer to our solution - just know that every brand treats bitrate and compression differently - and the mileage of these implementations will vary greatly. I would imagine that the Tapo app mainly focuses on quick access and overall accessibility more than it does with 100% fidelity, especially as the full-fidelity footage is stored and downloadable. Saying that, there actually is a solution for bitrate being worked on in the wings and undergoing development. While it is not a direct setting/replacement, it will allow you to have a much better view of the things happening in frame. 5 - Logged and forwarded; similar pre-roll features are currently being talked about for future implementation.

r/Tapo · C230 playback extremely slow since going from tapo care to SD card

I haven't really noticed much of a difference on my own devices, maybe a slight delay with SD recordings compared to Cloud. The removal of either the cloud or the SD card should not impact the performance of the other. On the hardware side, it could very well be your SD card not performing, but I would likely lean towards it having to do with the cloud recordings being more 'readily' available than the SD card. When you access the recordings on the SD card, there are more paths and 'handshakes' your phone must perform with the camera to view them, whereas the cloud is a bit more optimized and only handles detection recordings. The behavior extending to the live stream is unusual though. Nothing changes between TapoCare and No Tapo Care in this area. The only thing that changes with the live view has to do with whether you are accessing the camera from your home wifi, or connecting to the camera while away from home. Is there a change in behavior between viewing on your wifi vs your cell connection?

C230 has higher resolution but lower bitrate and lower lens aperture thus lower quality. It is better in marketing terms but not in actual product. If it's a standard size room like 10 to 15 meters in length you can get away with 5mp, c250 is 8mp arguably overkill unless your room goes Upto 30 meters, if c250 is cheaper get it but you're going to need a decent 32gb storage for motion capture but 5mp the 32gb will last longer

r/Tapo · C230 playback extremely slow since going from tapo care to SD card

My C230 has been absolutely rubbish since the last firmware update to 1.9.1. Now it frequently freezes in live view and goes offline. It had the odd glitch before that but nothing major. It pretty much always records the clips, but occasionly won't (guess the camera has completely gone offline at that point). I record clips to cloud and continuous record to SD card, but it still does it when only recording clips to cloud, besides this worked fine before the firmware update. Tired resetting and still the same. Also still happens close to the router. C410 and C246D work great still.

r/Tapo · My honest review about Tapo camera

Hello. :) C230 is nothing older than E1 Pro and both are similar in hardware. 1. I'm not talking about zooming the video (pinch to zoom). I'm talking about when I select a video from the playback I can only press and hold to go left or right without having any real visual the beginning and the end of that specific video. If you open the Reolink app and go to Playback, you will see the progress bar which you can move it very easy and go to the exact part of the video you wish. 2. No, I don't have any network issues. I use Deco X20 (three routers) which is great TP-Link product and I have 14 other devices connected to that network which are working flawlessly. 3. This is a typical issue with the app. It's a bug with not closing connections properly. Related to the bitrate, there were other reports about older firmwares that the users were having at least 2Mbps but in the newer firmwares the bitrate was chopped to 400Kbps or less which is awful. If it's any possibility of downgrading the firmware, I would do that immediately.

r/Tapo · C230 playback extremely slow since going from tapo care to SD card

I have the same camera. Yes, the playback  sometimes works fine and very frequently has issues. You cannot do anything to improve the situation.  The interesting part is: When Tapo servers are not overloaded, the playback works fine. Yes, I know you watch and store the videos locally on your SD card but the stupid Tapo product depends from their servers 24/7. That is my only Tapo camera and certainly will be the last.

r/Tapo · My honest review about Tapo camera

"Higher bitrate doesn't necessarily mean better image" - oh, yes it does! When I move the C230 left and right or any object comes, it's pixelating like hell and the E1 Pro is smooth as butter. Both cameras are in same class so your statement doesn't make any sense.

r/Tapo · My honest review about Tapo camera

I use only one device and that is my mobile phone. The only better indoor camera was C250 but the price was $60 and I bought C230 for $38. The price difference between Reolink ($45) and Tapo ($38) was very low but the only reason was the seller hadn't any E1 Pro.

r/homeautomation · Looking for a security camera that detects ALL motion and ALL sounds

If you have the time to spare setting it up, you could use Home Assistant, with the Tapo Camera Control integration and Frigate. This will take the video generated by the camera you already have and alert you to any movement you like, with custom levels of intensity. For an added bonus, you could also link up lights and any other smart tech to trigger when it sees anything. It can even identify individual number plates, pets and faces, if you wish and have the time to to invest into it. And quite accurately, too. It's a steep learning curve but I think it's worth it and AI could really help you with the setup.

r/Tapo · Tapo cameras - home and away automations

I've tried this. It doesn't work. You can not automate motion detection on/off. If I set detection to just vehicles and people. Then, create an automation to tell it to text me a pet notification. It won't because pet motion detection is still off, so it won't ever detect a pet. Therefore, never sending a text. My dogs will be out there all day, and it won't record or notify me of a single pet detection. I'll get a few false person detections caused by my dogs. Please show me the automation screen where you enable just pet detection. I'm begging you sincerely. Have you played with the actual home/away modes? Because they give the exact control I want. It just can't be automated or even scheduled. A Google search will show you people have been asking for this for years.

r/Tapo · Tapo cameras - home and away automations

I don't think you understand. I want the ability to automate the "actual" motion detection. Not notifications. Privacy mode stops everything. I just want to turn off certain motion detections, like pets, while still detecting and notifying me of the others. I want it to record people and vehicles while home. All 3 when I'm away. That way, I can schedule that automation and never have to worry about it. Unless I'm misunderstanding you, your way only stops the notification. It will still detect a pet and record it because i can't actually turn off certain detection unless it's in the home/away mode, which can't be automated.

r/Tapo · Tapo cameras - home and away automations

So you have motion detectors that isn't the camera? I'm talking about motion detection on the cameras. The home/away mode is the only shortcut that I know of that can change motion detection. I have home only detector people and vehicles. That way, my dogs don't set them off nonstop. That drains battery. Away is set for people, vehicles, and pets. That way, if one of my dogs gets loose, the notion is detected as a pet, and I get notified. This is why you will find people wanting to be able to automate the home/away modes so much, but Tapo seems unable to do so as it's been asked avout for years.

r/Tapo · Tapo cameras - home and away automations

This only works for notifications, though. Not motion detection. It's why everyone wants to be able to automate the home and away modes. Those can control trol motion detection.

r/Tapo · Tapo cameras - home and away automations

A couple of points. Your camera is always ingesting/digesting data while not in privacy mode. The only way to cut battery consumption is to either go into privacy mode or lower sensitivity. So if your camera is not in privacy mode, it is draining the battery. You want to record people and vehicles always. The simple way to do this is to turn on people and vehicle detection on the camera interface. Do not enable pet detection. Now create an AUTOMATION to detect pets. You should know that whenever this automation is enabled or “turned on”, the automation will work. And whenever this automation is disabled or “turned off”, the automation will not function or process data. So next you use the shortcuts i have already described to enable/disable the pet detection automation. I think you are not understanding what happens by enabling/disabling automations. It provides exactly the function you are requesting
