It absolutely does not. I record 24x7 to SD and have RTSP with home assistant dashboards.

I have Tapo C120 with SD card. I'm satisfied with it. It's customizable, good image quality... For 39 euro it's ok.

XprofQr/Tapo · What are great long-term local storage solutions for the TP-Link Tapo C120s besides Micro SD? →2025-11-16T09:27:50
I have had the H500 for over a month now, with 10 cameras. I don’t record continuously. I installed a cheap 1TB drive that cost me less than buying a bunch of smaller, high quality micro SD cards. Also, I didn’t need to climb the ladder to install the cards in the floodlight cameras, nor will I need to replace them should one go bad. Because the videos are stored to the drive in the H500 and the H500 is connected to my router via ethernet, I have found that clip playback is a much improved. As far as long-term storage goes, saving anything to a single drive is not a suitable long-term solution; however, the H500 has a USB port for manual backups. Depending on what you’re trying to accomplish, this might be good enough. Initial reviews were not favorable. The firmware was not great from what I understand and the purpose of the product is rather confusing. The H500 does add other features, such as AI recognition for older cameras, adding sensors, etc.

I've got 5 Cameras which all save back to H500 with a 1TB HDD. I haven't played with much of the settings because I don't know what I'm doing, but it's working really well. I also have a bunch of temperature and humidity sensors, IR units etc. all paired to the H500 as well. I'm not an expert at this stuff, but it's been pretty easy so far.

I have tqo of these, picked up at Costco in a two pack. I have an SD card inserted, with RTSP setup. I did use the Tapo Care when I was away to get the rich notifications and when it ended all in had to do was go in and disable, then re-enable the camera account and re-enter the password I setup. Haven't had an issue.

FantasyMaster85r/selfhosted · For those of you self hosting (or looking to self host) a security camera NVR, the latest release of Frigate is blowing my mind (well, it's a release candidate...0.17 RC1). Used to use Arlo (paid for the pro) and it's just got nothing anywhere near what this is capable of. It's absurd. →2026-02-13T12:07:14
I will echo what u/blueacid said. I’m not even using great cameras (we’re in the process of building a house and I didn’t want to dump a bunch of money into running Ethernet lines into the townhouse we live in now). I’m using wireless Tapo c120’s which are are the lower end of the camera scale.

I also used the RTSP without an SD card as well. No issue. I do agree, it's insane you can't use both. It is what it is. Thankfully they haven't decided to put it behind a pay wall like some others have out if nowhere.

I'm not a daily visitor myself, but I installed the free version of AgentDVR on my laptop for testing. AgentDVR displays your TAPO cameras and allows simultaneous recording to both the SD card and the laptop. If an SD card fails, everything is still backed up on the laptop. Granted AgentDVR was a little finicky setting up as it detects three streams from the camera, but once set up it's amazing for free.

I use the Tapo C120 with SD Card, I can still view the stream on my laptop via VLC as well, though i can't record with VLC at the same time. I've thought of setting up my own cloud storage so i can use SD and personal cloud storage. Did you get anywhere with this, did you cancel Tapo Care?

Entirely dependent on the cameras you buy and what you set them to for resolution.

Slightly off topic probably, but is there a step by step guide to integrate this came to store recording on a Synology hosted server. I tried by enabling RTSP and creating an account on the camera and then tried adding it to surveillance in Synology but things did not work out, I would have preferred their cloud storage but it's not economical at all in my opinion. Also is there a way to directly dump the recording chunks in a custom cloud like pcloud / google drive?

It's not even actually that bad, I can live without both. It's more frustrating to purchase the product under the impression It'll do what I expected after reading the FAQ and finding out the FAQ is quite literally incorrect. It got even worse when the support team incorrectly cited their own documentation.

I've got a C121 camera, which is the black version of the C120 and it works fine with both the SD card and RTSP/ONVIF running simultaneously. [Screenshots from both Tapo & UniFi Protect apps](https://imgur.com/a/WiWfoDl) I use it primarily with my UniFi UDM-Pro-Max and UniFi Protect. Both the Tapo and UniFi Protect apps are able to record and replay events. https://preview.redd.it/s2fcm4si5tqf1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01cf1f495bce8a22b0c44030f51d4a7e0fef366f I'm even able to bring in the camera through the UniFi Protect integration in Home Assistant.

If I remember correctly, you go in the app and do Remove Camera and it factory resets the camera. Then you connect to the camera's wifi and set it up again.

I appreciate the confirmation that RTSP and Local Recording work simultaneously, I'll be switching to it soon. I've only been using Tapo Care because It's nice to be able to playback any footage from anywhere with either my cellular data or a wifi connection.

Using the SD Card disables RTSP. I think theft mere act of installing the card causes this to happen (even if you don’t select to store recordings to the card in settings).
