r/reolinkcam · Best wireless camera to record a street? Battery cams are better than no cams at all but are inferior to wire powered cams. Battery cams detection range is only about 25 feet reliably during the day, less at night. To save battery life, battery cams go into low power mode til they sense movement then power up to record. Cars going by are probablu too fast for the PIR sensor to detect them much of the time, the cam will record late or completely miss them. My Reolink POE cams can detect to about 90 feet during the day and record 24/7 so nothing is missed. Another weakness of battery cams is they don't charge well in freezing temps. The Reolink Altas cam is the only battery model that can record continously for a few days as long as the solar panel has enough sun to charge the battery. It can also buffer and pre-record several seconds bofore an event. You could watch Youtube channel LifeHackster for a review of it and also look at moderator mblaser's review of it here on Reolink Reddit. If you could install electricity to that area you could buy one of Reolink's low voltage wifi cams and record 24/7 to its SD card. Best would be run POE ethernet cable but that would be a lot or work.
r/reolinkcam · WiFi Battery Camera for garden. NIce deer video. In my opinion the CX low light cams have really good night vision but they need some ambient light to work, porch light, street light. Without enough ambient light their spotlights will come on or keep the spotlights off and not get the best possible images. The Reolink Altas has the biggest battery Reolink makes. But it's a CX low light, does not have IR lights. So if you don't have enough ambient light you probably won't want it. If a battery cam is near the end of your wifi range you could get an outdoor wifi extender. The best option would be to run power to that location for a wire powered cam but that may not be feasible.
r/reolinkcam · Atlas pt ultra abnormal lagging Are you viewing them all with the same video quality, low or fluent? Is the Altas further away, maybe has a little weak wifi signal strength? Check if they are all on 2.4 or 5 Ghz wifi. 2.4 has slower signal but can broadcast further away. I have a Reolink Altas and another Reolink PTZ cam. Auto tracking is fun but I've said this numerous times here on Reolink Reddit that I don't trust auto tracking for security. While a cam is tracking one way something bad could happen where its not looking. It's better to have two fixed cams covering a whole area than just one tracking cam.

The Altas is a low light cam and needs some ambient light to work, porch light, street light, otherwise it's spotlights stay on all night. It does not have IR, only has LED spotlights. The Altas has a big battery and might be heavy for gutter mount anyway. There's YouTube videos about using gutter mounts. One channel I like is LifeHackster, he has several videos about gutter mounts and reviews Reolink and other brands cams. In one video he suggests putting the gutter mount close to the gutter nail fastener into fascia for more stability.
r/reolinkcam · Rendering issues on Altas Try reboot, restore or reset. If it live views okay it could be a defective SD card. Many of use use high endurance cards meant to process video better than average cards. I use Sandisk. Or maybe that problem cam has a weak wifi signal. You could bring it in, test it close to a router with known strong signal.

The only battery cam that can record 24/7 is the Altas, but only for few days. It needs a solar panel and/or regular charging depending how you use it. All cams need some way to secure them to wall/soffit, the usual way is drillnig holes/screws. Some who live in rentals put cams inside looking through window. This can be a problem with night vision, IR reflecting off glass unless you have outdoor lights. LifeHackster has a few videos about this method.

r/reolinkcam · Switching Arlo and have a few questions 1. Of course you can view the event history bot locally and remotely. You have have a filter criteria too. Note that once the camera is connected to the HHP then the only way to see it is through the HHP. 2. You have the the scene modes with three configured scenes and you can add a further three. You can disarm, arm, etc. However, there is not yet the schedule and subsequently you need to re-arm again. We have asked for a status and a scheduler (say re-arm after 60 min). 3. If your home WIFI is strong at the location of the cameras then it is recommended to use it rather than the WIFI provided by the HHP. HHP's WIFI is not that strong. This is what I did in my case. 4. Depends how often the camera is triggered. I have Argus 4 Pro, Argus PT Ultra, Argus 3 Ultra and Pro and they are mostly fully charged through the 6W Solar panel. Eg. On the 17th the Argus 4 Pro has been used for 162min and had direct sun for 4 hours. Before I slept I checked and it had a charged of 90%. 5. Yes you can do 24x7 recording but only and only if the camera is POE or plug-in WIFI. There is no 24x7 recording on battery cameras with the exception of Altas. Note: Normally we store the recordings on both the internal SD (ensure you purchase high endurance SD) and the HHP/NVR. Normal practice is to have event recording on SD and 24x7 recording on NVR/HHP. This is not applicable for battery cams in which case you shall have event recording on both SD and HHP/NVR.

r/reolinkcam · Atlas PT Ultra Vs the Argus 4 Pro, image quality? Had nothing but problems with both of these. Moreso the Altas PT Ultra because it constantly would lose the default position I set it to and record nothing. Both were too slow to capture motion as it started but the 4 Pro being so wide, it at least got some of the person at the extremes. Also, if you're in an area that gets cold in the winter, they'll stop charging and die mid-season. My 4 Pro never woke back up after it got warm and sunny. So I have to climb up and get it. I returned the PT Ultra because it was so bad at everything so I don't know if it improved. Even tho only 2K, the Altas 2K is significantly better than the PT Ultra because it can manage 24hr pre-record and even continuous recording overnight and still get topped off if the panel is in direct sunlight during the day. Still has problems staying charged in the cold, but will turn itself back on if it charges back from depleted. Placed in the same location with the panel facing the same way, the PT ultra constantly died for me. Exchanged and same result. But overall, if you can do wired POE, do that instead. The Duo 2 still has much taller vertical view than the Argus 4 Pro and even the Duo 3. I prefer the CX410 POE for Color X, but happy enough with Altas 2K in areas I can't run wire.

I want more and I want to pay for more but that's not an option. That's my problem. I want more for the cameras but they don't offer it for these cameras. Just doesn't make sense. They can offer it but choose not to.

I have 2 Atlus PT Ultras and I have ordered the Atlas 2k also. The difference is the size. The PT Ultra are very heavy, I need something lighter for the side of my house.

r/reolinkcam · Why choose Altas over Altas PT Ultra? Both Altas cams have the ColorX feature, and do not have/use IR. So, the Altas needs a source of light at night to see. You need to make sure you have enough external ambient light to see at night with the ColorX cams. The Altas has a spotlight that would have to be on all night long, if you don't have another source of light. Having said that, IMO the Altas spotlight is terrible and only is helpful out to maybe 15 feet. In my backyard the ColorX totally fails. Here is my Altas PT Ultra view on a dark night. I will check that 'welcome' post for sure. I’ve decided I will add some PoE cameras to the eaves of the house, but these two Altas are a good distance away to get power to, being on a large property. That’s actually why I built the Hubitat workaround! By using an external Zigbee PIR sensor to 'wake' the Altas via the API before the person gets in range of the camera's internal PIR, I've managed to catch those 'fast-walking delivery' events that battery cams usually miss. It basically gives the battery cam a 'head start', more similar to a wired unit. I think with some small software/firmware changes some of these limitations can be overcome.

I have 2 PT Ultra, one with a 6w and the other with a 12w solar. The Altas (still camera) is on a 6w as well, bought two weeks ago. They are connected to the new reolink hub for recording. None of them last more than 24-36h on a full charge, with 6h sun of sun, with only PIR+Pre Record 8 sec. For all the hype reolink promoted, even with the newest Altas, I feel ripped off. My 2 cents.

I got so confused and the reason is I had the wrong model all along. So now I’m trying to set up the atlas such that it records continuously even when no motion is detected. I’ve turned off PIR and I’ve turned off motion detection schedule. I enabled continuous recording 24/7 on the schedule. Problem is the camera still goes into standby mode. I also have the camera plugged into usb right now for this testing. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

I scheduled it for about 12 per day. Depending on the fps settings. I adjusted my smart battery settings to avoid draining my battery completely. There haven’t been any sunny days in the last month so my 12w panel hasn’t been able to keep up. Keep the forecast in mind with cameras installed in hard to reach locations.

r/reolinkcam · Reolink Altas mini review and a real world battery drain/solar charge analysis I bought an Altas 2k and just can't understand why this camera is not allowing AI detection alerts in continuous recording mode. PIR is so outdated since we have AI now. AI detection works great on this cam and detects a person very fast and reliably from as far as 30m away (20m at night) and yet one needs to get right in front of it to make it send an alert and mark an event in the recording because PIR is simply terrible. This is just a matter of updating the software, anyone knows if they plan to do it?

When you have the choice of a mesh wifi system with multiple nodes it's going to out perform a Home Hub or ISP router in 99% of cases. You would be struggling getting wifi to work at 100ft through multiple walls for a camera. It's more noticeable if a camera is streaming 24x7.

I’ve had ring cams in the same places for 3 years and really liked them for what they were. Never had any battery issues with them either. I know the pt is leagues better, if I don’t have good luck with it I’ll probably swap it out with a regular bullet altas. I’ve heard those have way better battery life.

And battery is okay. But with either pre-record or continuous recording on. The battery drains more then the solar panel can charge. Even on bright sunny days in the summer. r/reolinkcam · UPDATE to my Altas battery drain/solar charge tests Huh, didn't realize they about pre record and never sleeping. That would explain the camera being unusable for me. I may dig mine out of the dark corner I banished them too out of disgust and give it a try it and when this magical new firmware ever gets pushed. As they stand now they are hot garbage, sadly.

r/reolinkcam · UPDATE to my Altas battery drain/solar charge tests Your one data point directly conflicts with the several data points I have. I have observed (and recreated multiple times) the fact that if you enable the pre-record function (a highly touted feature of this camera) the camera will after a period of roughly a day or two will spontaneously stop entering sleep mode ever. Once it does this it then burns through the battery in record time and will actually drain battery while the solar panel is in full sun. Just because it works in your particular case does not mean that extrapolates out to all other hardware.

So I would submit a ticket to their support and ask for the latest firmware, v3.0.0.5007\_25061310 or newer (that's the one I updated to in my review). You edited your comment. You didn't specify pre-record originally, you originally said **continuous recording** wipes the battery out, which is what I had tested, so that's what I was replying to. I didn't do pre-record as part of my test so I can't comment on that. Don't change the entire point of your comment after someone has already replied to it, that's not cool. Currently I do have it set for pre-record only, so we'll see how it performs doing that with this new firmware. I only started yesterday, but no issues so far. I'll let you know in a few days if I experience that same issue.
I'm almost positive the Altas (not the Altas PT) uses a 1/4" x 20 thread. Unfortunately mine is mounted up on a tree so I can't check. I would worry about it not being very stable if mounted to a gutter mount.
How did you check? With battery cameras there's no way to know if you have the latest camera firmware unless you contacted Reolink and asked them if there's newer. If you're talking about the upgrade check in the app telling you that it's already up to date, that doesn't work 99% of the time so don't rely on what it tells you.
The only difference is PT and resolution. You mention the Altas having an antenna as a difference. Well, they both have an external antenna. I have both (and currently have them mounted side by side for my upcoming review of the Altas) and I can tell you that the Altas is a bit brighter at night. Same situation we had with the CX410 vs CX810. The lower resolution allows it to capture more light per pixel. You didn't reply to my comment about which model you actually have. Was that the problem all along, that you had an Argus, not an Altas? Battery cameras don't support RTSP. They only can if you run them through an NVR or Home Hub, which then handles the RTSP support.

Yeah, with continuous recording or with pre-recording turned on it's about 3-4 days. In PIR only mode it's hard to say for sure since I don't think anyone's tested it out that far, but I'm kind of doing that right now with the base Altas model, which has the same size battery as the PT Ultra. I installed it in its permanent location on 7/19 and now it's at 86%. So 14% battery drop in 5.5 weeks. So extrapolated out I expect it will last somewhere around 6-9 months. However, I'll probably top the battery back up to 100% before winter since the cold temps will shorten the battery life. Of course it also depends on lots of variables. How often its PIR sensors are woken up by motion, how often you're viewing it, with the PT Ultra model the more it pans and tilts that's going to drain it a lot more, etc. Also, I don't know how much research you've done, but be aware that the ColorX cameras need some ambient light to work well. They aren't good in complete darkness. I would assume the Eufy would be the same since it has the same size image sensor.
It's been 5 days now of having it set for pre-record only and it hasn't stopped entering sleep mode. So you might want to contact Reolink and see if they'll push v3.0.0.5007\_25061310 out to you as well.
Yeah, if you can't get power to the location and you want continuous recording, then yeah I'd recommend it. Even though you're in California it might still be a good idea to get the larger 12W solar panel for it just in case (it's under the accessories section of their website). There's also the Altas PT Ultra, which is higher resolution and can pan/tilt/track. A Hub gives you a central place to store your recordings, which is nice if you have more than 1 camera. And it gives you an event summary/history view of all camera events in one screen. It's also a good idea to have your recordings stored somewhere instead of only on an SD card in the camera. Not only are SD cards more prone to failure, if the camera gets damaged or stolen then there goes your footage.
