r/JamesHoffmann · Best drip coffee makers for home with no bells and whistles?

Couldn’t recommend Ninja any less. My OXO 8-cup replaced a Ninja Coffee Bar that was not up to snuff and finally quit working altogether around 5 or 6 years ago and it’s pretty good—certainly above average. I know if I looked at upgrading again in the future, I’d probably get a Moccamaster but that’s pretty well above your price range.

r/enshittification · Drip coffee makers are garbage.

Sounds like a problem with ninja! I had a mr coffee machine for like a decade, but one of the buttons was getting hard to press and the capacity was quite small (it was one of those metal insulated pots, smaller on the inside). So I got a used mr coffee at a yard sale, a cheaper model (lightweight, plastic-y), which I can only assume is also like a decade old. It works perfectly and has a timer. Drip coffee machines are very simple and have no reason to break from regular use. Moccamasters are supposedly king, but you don’t need to get one. I’ve personally been using mine less since I got an aeropress and french press anyway (I like coffee). But it’s useful when there’s many people who need their hit.

r/Costco · CHEFMAN Drip Coffee Maker, any reviews?

There are some coffee makers that are not SCA certified that come close or pretty much meet the specs. Like the Ninja 12-Cup, or the Zojirushi 5-cup and 12-cup options. However, I agree, the rest mostly not great because they don't get hot enough.

Huh that’s a good idea. Thanks. I will mention that to them. They probably wouldn’t get a smart plug today (and they “need” coffee tomorrow) but I’ll tell them about it and hopefully that’ll give them time for the idea to… ahem… percolate (sorry) before this next one breaks. 😏

That’s a fair point. There’s also coffee makers that used to be certified, but they stopped paying the SCA. The Ninja is a solid machine and was certified at some point I believe.

r/BuyItForLife · UPDATE: 2 weeks ago I asked "What's the best no-frills coffee maker", and after 400+ recommendations, I bought my mom the Moccamaster

I’ve had my ninja coffee maker for 9 years now. I don’t even want a coffee maker that sells replacement parts. If my ninja coffee maker breaks in 5 years, I’ll just go buy a brand new ninja coffee maker. Why would I wanna wait for replacement parts to come in? What would I do for coffee in the meantime? Buy an inexpensive mr coffee? Lol

r/JamesHoffmann · If you had to recommend one coffee maker in 2026, what would it be?

My best recommendation is go to the specialty coffee association website and look at their certified brewers. Find one that fits your budget. I just went from an 8 year old ninja coffee bar to a bonavita connoisseur. The ninja made pretty good coffee. I’ve been blown away by the increase in quality with the Bonavita. It tastes almost as good as pour over and is way more convenient than brewing that volume myself. I use a baratza encore grinder that is also 8 years old and going strong.

We have the Ninja Dual Brew that can make K-Cups and regular grounds. Both get used on the daily as we also have different preferences. We've had it for a few years now and it's still going strong. We're very happy with it, and it wasn't ridiculously expensive compared to the more premium models out there.

r/BuyItForLife · Best coffee maker? Is there anything new in 2025?

So simple and reliable. I caved and bought a "fancy" Ninja coffeemaker a few years ago hoping to curb my teen's specialty coffee shop habit. In this regard, the purchase worked, but it's terrible to keep clean, leaks, and the digital display has broken, making programming it at night difficult. I'm glad I kept my trusty Mr. Coffee and plan to put it back into the rotation eventually.

r/BuyItForLife · Is a Moccamaster worth it if one isn't a huge detailed coffee person?

I really love my Ninja CM401: https://www.coffeegrindguru.com/ninja-cm401/. It was certified by the same coffee industry group that certifies temperature/quality/etc as Moccamaster, but was selling for about half the price here when I bought it. Like you, I frequently buy trash coffee and it just consistently makes great cups. My favourite thing is that I can make individual cups in 3 or 4 different sizes (including XL, which is the perfect fit for my travel mug), half pot, or a full pot. I tend to just drink one or two cups a day, so the individual feature is what I tend to use. I bought this after having Keurigs, French presses, and an AeroPress and I’m always happy with my consistent results and it’s super easy to clean (especially if you making individual cups), which I can’t say for my experience with those other options.

r/BuyItForLife · In need of coffee maker advice

I assume Moccamaster will probably be the best suggestion, but I’ve been using a regular Mr. Coffee 10 cup brewer for 6 years of daily use and not had any problems. It’s programmable and has an insulated carafe that keeps the coffee hot for quite awhile without heating it further or making it taste bad. I’ve used it with a Goldtone washable filter the entire time, and been happy with it. Mine was like $70 but they’re probably $100+ at this point. A Moccamaster is probably $300-400, so I guess it depends on your budget. Bunn and Ninja make similar ones to the Mr. Coffee I have for around the same price they are now, but I can’t speak to how long those will last.

r/JamesHoffmann · Best drip coffee makers for home with no bells and whistles?

been there with the option overload. for that budget the [Bonavita Metropolitan](https://featherab.com/shopit?search_keywords=Bonavita+Metropolitan) is probably your answer. its one button no programming no timers just hot water and good showerhead design. got one for my mom who hates complicated gadgets and shes been using it daily for two years now. easy to clean too since the carafe lid comes apart and the basket is simple. ninja and cuisinart add too many features you dont need. bonavita just focuses on the basics.

r/JamesHoffmann · Best drip coffee makers for home with no bells and whistles?

honestly i feel you, the coffee maker market is overwhelming now. my last one died too and i just wanted something basic. the Bonavita Metropolitan is right at $100 and does one thing well - makes hot water evenly over grounds. no timers or screens to deal with. the showerhead design is solid and the carafe keeps coffee hot without a burner. i'd avoid Ninja or Cuisinart if you want simple, they pack in too many extras. [Bonavita Metropolitan](https://featherab.com/shopit?search_keywords=Bonavita+Metropolitan+drip+coffee+maker) is what i switched to and cleaning takes maybe 30 seconds.

r/JamesHoffmann · Need Help with the Best Drip Coffee Maker 2026?

If he want something that just works with minimal fuss, go with the Oxo Brew 9-Cup Coffee Maker—it consistently hits the sweet spot between ease of use, solid brew quality, and straightforward cleaning without feeling overly “techy.” The Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer is arguably the most durable and best-performing long-term, but you’re paying a premium for that reliability and slightly more hands-on simplicity. I’d skip the Aeropress Original Coffee Press and Ninja DualBrew Pro Specialty Coffee System for your case—they’re great, but either too manual or too feature-heavy for someone who just wants consistent, no-headache coffee.

r/BuyItForLife · Looking for a different coffee maker!

Some Ninja machines don’t actually meter water—they just run the whole reservoir, which is frustrating. If you want true brew size control, look at the Breville Precision Brewer or even a Cuisinart DCC-3200. If durability matters most, Moccamaster is hard to beat but less customizable.

r/Moccamaster · Is upgrading to a Moccamaster actually worth it if I’m fine with my cheap drip machine?

No it hasn’t been worth in my opinion. I am a coffee snob, only buy beans from my fav micro roasters, grind my own beans, am careful not to let the hot plate burn for taste. I have not tasted any improvement from the much cheaper ninja drip coffee machine that I replaced. I kinda wish I went with a different brand. The moccamaster seems to be marketed more on “longevity”, the ease and ability to clean, quality of manufacturing. But lacking in my opinion in a few features, for example ability to brew without the hotplate on. And the head that drips water is an odd shape that I can’t help feel is not optimal for spreading water across the entire reservoir.

Idk I swear by my Ninja coffeemaker after Mr. Coffee and other name brands failed after a year or so of purchase. Going on 6 plus years now, with only one water leak that I was able to resolve by clearing out the water inlet, as long as I clean it regularly my coffee never tastes bad. Even using ground Aribica coffee from BJs club, it tastes good enough for me.

We had one that lasted 4 years then the switch went. The company wouldn’t send me a replacement. They wanted me to send the coffee maker back to them. You don’t even need to solder anything to replace it. I know because I took it apart. Anecdotal, but I was definitely not a satisfied moccamaster customer. Cheap ninja one does the job just as well.

I get where you’re coming from - over the past few years I’ve tried quite a few coffee makers myself and honestly had some bad experiences too. A lot of them either broke too quickly or had weird build issues that made me give up on them. But I will say this: This Ninja and the Technivorm Moccamaster have been the real standouts for me. Ninja because of how versatile it is (iced coffee, stronger brews, frother, timer, etc.), and Moccamaster because it’s just insanely consistent with flavor and feels like it’ll last forever. Totally different machines, but both made me feel like I finally wasn’t wasting money.

I got suckered into two, second ninjas- I bought one and loved it and then got one for my mother. Both also suffered the led clock going out, one bar at a time after a couple years. Searched for one with the removable water tank and ended up with both of us ultimately getting a different, newer model ninja. I’ve had several brands, especially cheaper ones over the years - and while they do last longer, ninja for me makes the best tasting drip coffee. FWIW tho, I’m a recovering coffee addict, so I have and use pretty much every other method to make it (French press, espresso machine, cheesecloth for cold brew etc). Depending on how long these ninjas last- will determine whether they’re my last or not.
