r/JamesHoffmann · Ratio 6 vs. Moccamaster vs. something else?

Sorry I just realised I got bloom time and volume confused - bloom time is 30secs, and volume is 3 bars, half way point. Until recently I made the same mistake with temperature, it used to be at 90 degrees for medium and like 88 for dark and it wasn’t really working. A coffee roaster advised that we should be brewing at 95 for their medium, and once I bumped it up everything was better!

r/JamesHoffmann · Ratio 6 vs. Moccamaster vs. something else?

Hey, that’s interesting. For me medium-light is always 95 degrees or more, slightly finer grind, just above mid point for bloom time and I think only 2 bars for flow rate. Out of all of them, bumping the temperature up makes the biggest difference.

r/JamesHoffmann · Best drip coffee maker

My Breville Precision Brewer is consistent. I can’t compare it against any other machine, but if a bean tastes bitter, I can grind coarser and it will be less bitter. It’s predictable and consistent. I bought it used 3 years ago, use it every single day and the only issue is it sometimes gives me an error code after brewing to do with the water sensor not knowing that it’s used all the water in the tank, and I have to unplug it to reset it. Other than that, I like it. I’d like it more if it didn’t look like a spaceship and had cleaner lines like the Oxo 8, but it works well!

Is it really though? There are presently 15 some brands (some with multiple brewer options) that have [Specialty Coffee Association certified home brewers](https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer) other than the Moccamaster series, and a significant number of them are 'press button and go' brewers like the Moccamaster. Oxo 8 (or 9) cup machine, Breville Precision, just to name a few, fit the same bill.

Actually replaced everything for me, I got a 2nd hand 1st gen for £80 on ebay basically unused. Paired with a decent grinder. It's my daily driver everyday. It's consistent and easy. r/BuyItForLife · Grind and brew coffee maker.

Sounds like you have your heart set on grind and brew. I will just say from my vcr/dvd/TV days...combo units are a loser because eventually one side breaks or has a upgrade which renders the whole thing less than ideal. For a brewer....check out the Breville precision brewer.  Programmable. Has a timer.  Get it with the insulated SS carafe.  Breville also makes a separate burr grinder.  It's nice.  I'm sure there are others but this setup checked all the boxes for me. Apologies to the moccamaster diehards in the sub. I realize I have cut you deeply.

If you can squeak out a few more dollars (or find it on sale) check out the Breville Lux Brewer. I have the Precision brewer for 5 years or so and its been outstanding and I would recommend except it does not have a removeable reservoir (I wish it did!). Looks like the Lux Brewer has the same functionality but has the removeable reservoir. I dont know if it can do single cups without using the carafe, but its completely capable of making single cup qtys because thats pretty much all I use it for. It has a bunch of other cool features like cold brew, pour over adapter, and things like that. Its programmable to whatever recipe you want but I almost always use the default gold setting. It makes great coffee provided you use good beans, grind, water quality, and so forth.

moccamaster is the answer but timing the purchase matters -- they run real sales occasionally and it's worth knowing the actual floor price before you buy. been tracking it on couponpicked and the swing between full price and a genuine sale is meaningful at this price point. don't buy it at $350+ if you can catch it for $250-270 at a sale. also if budget is the constraint: breville precision brewer has a thermal carafe version that hits the right brew temp consistently and has held up for a lot of people for 5+ years. not moccamaster longevity but a solid middle option.

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

I had an open ticket with Breville and told them of the modifications that some of us have made, with successful results. I suggested they relay this to their R&D department (assuming they have one) and they closed the ticket with no response. So I guess threads like these are essential to get the word out that these coffee makers can still be used, but do need this mod to alleviate these annoying issues.

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

Issues: Not all of the coffee is flowing into the carafe and coffee pours slowly from the carafe into the cup I realize this in an older thread, but some folks are still have the Breville Precision coffee maker and are experiencing these same "overflow" issues. I have been dealing with this for 2 years, basically accepting at times (maybe once in every 30-40 uses) the overflow problem would happen. It makes a HUGE mess. As the original poster said, the issue is happening between the bottom of the basket and the lid in the carafe, not overflowing out of the top of the basket. The unit does make exceptionally good coffee, so we just dealt with it - until I finally got fed up. I wrote to Breville and their customer support acts like this is some sort of "new" issue. Obviously from reading what folks (like myself) have been dealing with over the years they have to know about it! My coffee maker is out of warranty, so I figured I had absolutely nothing to lose by making a modification. I have done what one poster had suggested and drilled two small holes through the "flapper" on the bottom of the lid. Not only does my coffee maker NOT overflow any longer, but it now pours normally whereas before, even when it did make the coffee normally with no overflow, I had to tap on the spring-loaded lid several times to allow the lid to pour normally. I assume that "flapper" was sticking shut and tapping the top of the lid was freeing it up. Anyway, this modification WORKS and solved both issues! I even wrote back to Breville on my service ticket and told them what I did. If this helps at least one person with a similar issue, then that is great. Wish I saw this thread a long time ago.

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

I was also having overflow issues as well as slow pouring coffee. Both issues are related to the flap on bottom of carafe lid. I used my Dremel tool and created small notches on either side of the flap that alleviates the pressure buildup. This has solved both problems for me: 1. No more coffee flowing on to counter because of pressure buildup in lid. 2. Coffee pours at a reasonable rate into cup after brewing without having to remove the lid.

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

I bought my precision brewer in December 2024 and was having the same issue of intermittent overflow. The lid on the thermal carafe is the issue. I called Breville and they asked me to video the entire process of grinding beans along with grind setting and amount of grinds. Also, amount of water. I went through the entire process with them on phone and of course the overflow didn’t happen then. I made a big stink about it and asked for a manager. They ended up sending me a new carafe and lid. I have only used it once and no overflow. I did remove the lid and push the flap open. When I put lid back on and in pour position, the coffee pours much better. If I have any overflow issues, I will also create a notch like Arjayb OP described with image in their post. If you call Breville for this issue and you are still in warranty period, per prepared with a video of the overflow and notes about how much water and coffee, etc. They will take care of you.

r/JamesHoffmann · Finally have a budget for a proper coffee maker, where do I even start if i need the best coffee maker?

As others have said, all the faffing about with specific processes is for minimal incremental gains. Start with good, freshly roasted beans. Experiment a bit to find what roast and beans you like. The real key to good coffee, regardless of method, is understanding extraction. You can over-extract, under-extract, or nail the perfect cup when the variables align with your taste. The explanation that hit for me is this: Given the same weight of water and coffee- Water is a solvent for the essential elements of the coffee dissolving into your cup. The hotter the solvent, the more extraction. The more surface area of coffee exposed to the solvent, the more extraction (finer grind = more surface area). The longer the solvent is in the coffee, the more extraction (contact time). The sweet spot is neither sour nor bitter. The Precision Brewer is a brilliant machine, and it does take away some of the variables, controlling temp and time, leaving just grind size for you. I've had one for a few years. It's dead simple and repeatable once you have your dosages down, and grind size good enough. If you ever need to brew larger batches, it's a great answer. I bought mine used, and I see used ones in my area for $50-$150 USD all the time. Hoffman sold me on it when he said in his review that it's the batch brewer that he himself uses at home. You can batch brew into the carafe, or single brew a 20 oz travel mug. Easy. Start it and walk away. We do this all the time; I've had it for about 4 years (?). I got a V60 in December, and that is easy enough, too. Comparable dosing and brewing to the Precision Brewer, at a fraction of the cost. But it's limited in capacity without becoming a time suck. We also usually brew 20-oz travel mug servings with it, which isn't too bad. But it's tough to deal with the rest of breakfast or anything else simultaneously. I've learned to ignore most of the nonsense. Just get the dosing correct, one pour to bloom for at least 30 sec, then one edge pour with a swirl to settle the bed, and a final edge pour to fill the mug without disturbing the bed. I don't bother with timers and a scale for the pours. Took me only a couple of cups, vs initially struggling with espresso for months -mostly due to an inadequate grinder. I've converted my partner to both brew methods above. It only took me a couple of years! LOL At her house, we have a mediocre Krups burr grinder from Amazon. At my house, where we have the Precision Brewer, I have a DF64 Gen 1, purchased used. With the medium-light roast blend that we love, there's little difference in the cup between those grinders TBH. With the occasional lighter roast, the Krups falls short, and the DF64 comes through -and it can grind for damned near every brew method, which is nice. The Krups is utterly useless for espresso; it's the grinder that nearly made me give up on espresso. I hand-grind for espresso at her place, where I brew with an older LaPavoni lever machine. The DF64 is not notably different in the cup for our preferred blend than my previous Eureka Silenzio or Sette 270. So yeah, grinders matter, but much less so if you're not drinking super light roasts IME. I also have an Aeropress. I find it too much of a PITA to actually use and even more of a PITA to clean up. It's stuck in a drawer. I've made big messes with the Aeropress, never with the V60 or Precision Brewer. TL;DR: Don't sweat the process too much. 1. Fresh locally roasted whole beans 2. Moderately competent grinder 3. Used Breville Precision Brewer > V60 > Aeropress

Some Ninja machines don’t actually meter water—they just run the whole reservoir, which is frustrating. If you want true brew size control, look at the Breville Precision Brewer or even a Cuisinart DCC-3200. If durability matters most, Moccamaster is hard to beat but less customizable.

r/JamesHoffmann · If you had to recommend one coffee maker in 2026, what would it be?

Honest answer from someone who went down the same rabbit hole after watching Hoffmann — the machine matters less than you think, the grinder matters more. But since you asked for one recommendation: **If you're in India:** Agaro Imperial espresso machine (₹9,990). It's the one machine I've seen people actually stick with long term at a reasonable price. 20-bar pressure, die-cast aluminium boiler, steam wand for milk drinks. It's not a Moccamaster but it punches well above its price point and parts are actually available here. **If you're outside India:** Breville Precision Brewer is genuinely the right answer for drip. SCA certified, bloom phase, consistent temperature. Fellow Aiden if you want the tech-forward option but it's pricier. The Moccamaster is the "buy it once" answer but it's purely a drip machine — no milk, no espresso. If you want versatility the Breville wins. One thing Hoffmann doesn't say enough — whatever machine you get, buy fresh beans and grind them yourself. A ₹3,000 grinder + decent machine beats a ₹30,000 machine with pre-ground supermarket coffee every time. For Indian buyers specifically I put together an unbiased breakdown here with what's actually available and worth buying: [pickryt.com/blog/best-coffee-maker-2026-india](http://pickryt.com/blog/best-coffee-maker-2026-india)

I completely agree with your assessment. I have the same issue and have been monitoring it for a year. when brewing the heat in the carafe build positive pressure and does not allow the flap to open and then leaves all over the carafe and spills over. it has happened numerous time for me. I have clean and descaling as soon as indicated as well. Mine happens more frequently when I heat up the carafe with hot water first so the coffee going in has not reduced its temperature. I love hot coffee. I plan to call them to discuss what a solution is to resolve the issue. Im in engineering an this is a design flaw. If designed correctly this should never happen.

r/Coffee · PSA: Breville Precision Brewer caraffe lid disgusting

This thread is FIVE YEARS OLD and this is still a problem?! I can’t believe it. Just got a Breville Luxe a few weeks ago. Carafe lid is filled with sloshing liquid. I’ve never immersed it in water. This was posted when this device was the Precision, now “newer” model called the Luxe. Such a glaring problem, still ongoing. Really a shame because everything else about this coffee maker is excellent. Guess I’m drilling some holes in the lid and doing the mod myself. But what about folks not comfortable with doing that? Breville should redesign the lid and offer a replacement to anyone who’s purchased one of these. *Edit: When on its side, liquid will drain out of the carafe lid. I stood it up on a cup with the arrow pointing down and it completely drained. Fortunately I discovered this soon after buying this device and am not worried about anything too vile having been stuck and growing in there. Nonetheless, I will definitely be getting some cafiza or similar product, using it periodically, and keeping the lid on its side between uses.

I just went through this. It was between the OXO 8-cup or the moccamaster. I ordered the OXO and their grinder. It’s not the grinder most here would recommend, but it was still over $100 on top of a $200 brewer. It all just arrived today so I’ve not had a chance to test it (plus, I’m waiting on beans). If the OXO does not workout I’ll try the Moccamaster, but it has good reviews so I’m optimistic it will be ok. The issue is, reviews on many brewers were not good (Aidan, Breville Precision brewer, Bonavita) it sounds like these used to be good, but quality may have gone down? Everyone’s mileage may vary.

I’m a Moccamaster fan, big time. It takes a good grinder to max out any coffee maker. For a well priced hand grinder look at the Kingrinder K6 or for an electric I’d say Fellow Ode 2 (for filter coffee). You can find Fellow Ode 2 on marketplace and eBay for less than retail. Or for cheaper ($200ish) the DF54 is a good entry point. The Aiden and Breville luxe are great, but the Moccamaster is a lifetime (repairable) machine.

Breville Luxe or if you’re into pour over take a chance on an Aiden. IMO best to avoid a Moccamaster for several reasons: no blooming without manual intervention, many cheap plastic parts, and a flume that does not evenly wet the coffee bed. Basically no controls over your brew. MM look great and make good coffee but they’re seriously dated. I’ve had a MM, Luxe and Aiden. Aiden is my daily driver. Best coffee of the three, although the Luxe is very very close and IMO better built.

honestly for all those boxes, Moccamaster is the answer. yeah it's around $300-350 but it checks every single one of your criteria \- taste: brews at the proper temp (195-205°F) which most drip makers don't. SCAA certified so the extraction is legit. makes coffee that tastes like pour over basically \- reliability: these things last 10-20+ years easily. all the parts are replaceable if something does break. it's the only drip maker that's actually buy it for life quality \- easy to clean: super simple design, no complicated parts. just rinse and descale occasionally \- price: not cheap but reasonable for what you get. way better value than replacing a $100 machine every 2 years if Moccamaster is too much, Bonavita Enthusiast is the best budget option around $150-200. also SCAA certified, brews properly, just not quite as bulletproof long-term Breville Precision Brewer is another solid option if you want more control and versatility, similar price to Moccamaster. [Got some idea through this list](https://www.roastycoffee.com/best-drip-coffee-maker/) so maybe it'll be worth the read for you too So do avoid anything with tons of programmable features and electronics, more stuff to break. simpler is better for reliability

r/enshittification · Drip coffee makers are garbage.

They are really simple machines so getting one that is more expensive means it is probably full of features you don't need but that are points of failure. You really need to go high end on drip machines. Like, my programmable Sage (Breville outside of the EU) Precision Brewer is great but it's a 300€ machine. Even a Moccamaster is just a 300€ machine that has two buttons. On/off and half / full can. It's maybe a bit more stylish. It might have a more complex program, it might have higher quality materials. But none of that matters if you don't grind your coffee in the morning. You can throw some store bought pre ground garbage into the cheapest coffee maker you can find and it will taste the same. So just get the 30€ one and replace it every 2 years. Everything between 30 and 300€ is just the 30€ machine with a timer.

    r/BrevilleCoffee · Luxe Brewer Thermal - BDC465 - Review

This new model being about the same price as the precision brewer is a good thing, especially when it invokes luxury in the name.  Being able to remove the the tank makes filling it easier and also easier to clean the tank, though I wonder about long term structural integrity of the upper portion.  The upgrade to the screen is nice and looks easier to view.  Adding more settings to customize brewing is great for coffee nerds.  But the loss of presets, changing the filter type, not being able to use a v60 or having a setting for it, etc is a misstep.  My partner likes that there are those presets so they don't have to mess around with settings and they don't change what I have for my my brew.  Not everyone likes to tinker, it is why my parents like their Moccamaster.   Hopefully Breville just flashes the firmware on this product back to what made the precision brewer so great.

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

The suggested fix also worked for me. I used a Dremel to create a notch preventing the flap from creating a seal. I received my brewer on Apr 13 and this issue happened from day one. Breville sent me a new carafe without hesitation. I got the new carafe today and the flap inside the lid moves way more freely. I had a Grind Control before this that had zero issues with the thermal carafe lid. I'm wondering now if they did actually improve it. Other posts on reddit and forms led me to believe new lids didn't fix the problem so maybe the current ones have. I'm reluctant to try it though lol.

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

I haven’t had an issue since doing it, and the problem where it pours slowly after brewing almost never happens any more. I’ve been thinking about making the notch just a little larger since the slow pouring thing still happens, although rarely. I don’t really see a downside to this. A tiny hole like that won’t impact heat retention to any noticeable degree.

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

I took a file and made a small notch where the pouring flap rests against the lip. Just enough to prevent it from sealing. My theory is that the same issue that causes it to pour slowly after brewing (requiring you to tap against the cup to unseat the flap) is causing pressure buildup in the carafe and preventing proper flow when brewing. If nothing else it fixed the pouring issue. It remains to be seen if it fixes the brewing issue but I'm optimistic.

I don’t think this is the same problem I have. Mine fails to drain into the carafe while brewing, it looks like the problem in that thread is coffee leaking from the basket after removing the carafe to pour. It happened again to me yesterday. I think what’s happening is that somehow during the process the coffee flows in such a way that air in the carafe can’t escape and pressure builds up to the point that no more coffee can flow in. Maybe the pouring flap is wet and seals against the lid or something.

r/Coffee · PSA: Breville Precision Brewer caraffe lid disgusting

I just got one and I suspect it's the same design. The lid doesn't come apart and water definitely gets trapped in there. Nope I lied. There is now a little flap at the bottom which I guess allows draining. Actually that's in the old photos too. I think that actually breaks the seal so you can pore more freely.

r/Coffee · PSA: Breville Precision Brewer caraffe lid disgusting

I'm having the same issue on mine, it all started with the brews becoming unbelievably sour when cooling down, but after getting an aeropress, could confirm the beans were not the culprit. I spent 2 hours debugging this issue today, and well, turns out flakes get into your brew too, but with it being hot, they get disolved, and if they don't, they're the same color as your coffee so you wouldn't notice. So if you still have this issue, I'd suggest removing the lid entirely.

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

We had the overflow issue as well. We returned / replaced with the same model and the new one works just fine. There was definitely an issue with the spring or seal under the basket. Even the flow of the coffee from the carafe pours smoothly, no longer need to press down on the button on the carafe to pour correctly. Other than this issue we love this machine and glad we gave it another chance. H

r/Coffee · PSA: Breville Precision Brewer caraffe lid disgusting

Finding this old post after having the same issues with mine. I deep cleaned everything by soaking in dishwasher detergent which cleaned out the carafe beautifully but now the lid is full and sloshing around. Detergent and coffee crud keeps coming out if you shake it. Ugh!  Can you expand on the drilling holes comment? Where specifically would you do that ? Thanks!

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

Thank you Arjayb for sharing your fix. Just in time to save our holiday brew. I improved a little and drilled 2 holes into the pouring flap. See below for pictures. Now, air can reliably escape from the carafe. So we brewed the full amount of coffee without any spillage from the lid onto the counter. The notch on the lid alone was not enough. To allow air escape reliably. I suppose that the flap can move a little. To eventually block the nudge and so prevent pressure exchange. [Here is how I drilled (iCloud Share)](https://share.icloud.com/photos/092Lz3Uk8NA3WAQr-LoG05yjA) [Here the holes in the pouring flap (iCloud Share)](https://share.icloud.com/photos/0c6DHuESYZwEYdMjlDlczSvGg). You can also see the notch at the lip.

r/BrevilleCoffee · Breville Precision Brewer - Sometimes coffee stops draining into carafe and overflows

We got ours in Feb and by Mar we were tired of cleaning the countertop and inside the lower cabinets from coffee spills which were occurring at least three or four times a week. Breville replaced the carafe. But it started leaking again and my husband, the engineer, showed me the design flaw. When the bubble top is depressed and water flows in, it fills the lid sides as well as going into the pot below. I imagine with a slow flow, it would go into the pot but set on gold it has been overflowing pretty regularly again. I am thinking of bringing my old cuisinart from the basement and just pouring the coffee from that into the carafe from breville. I also ordered a different manufacturer for my other house out of frustration. Dumb design I guess. (Oh yes, there is no debris under any spring, we descaled the pot, we boiled the lid...ran out of options)

r/Coffee · PSA: Breville Precision Brewer caraffe lid disgusting

Untrue -- we just got one today, rinsed and washed all the items as instructed, and the top filled with water. Reading this all the way through to the last comment -- we are returning the coffee maker and getting a different brand. It is absurd this issue as been going on for this long. Bad news all around.
