Breville Precision Brewer

Breville Precision Brewer, packshot

If coffee is weak, your options are to: >grind finer >use more coffee powder/dose >use hotter water >increase contact time between water and coffee powder See which variables you can control and then experiment. If all of that fails, try a roast that isn't as light.

I get a quite good taste out of light roasts using this method: Grind at the fine end (Wilfa Aroma in the middle of "aeropress" setting) with mybrew at 98C. One trick I use is to set a bloom time, and when the brewer stops for blooming I pull the filter out by the handle and give it a good swirl. There is a stopper at the bottom, so it won't drip out on the kitchen table.

Honestly, if you want something that just works and lasts, I’d check out the Breville BDC450 Precision Brewer. What I’ve learned makes a “best” drip coffee maker is: consistent brew temperature, even water distribution over the grounds, easy-to-clean parts, and durability. In my experience, the Breville has all of those, every cup tastes good, cleaning is simple, and it’s held up daily for me for over a year. For me, those are the things that actually matter more than bells and whistles.

When I was dialling Precision Brewers few things made the difference: 1. Temperature - lighter roast, higher temp, my usual light roast was 93+ 2. Bloom Time - I have 2 min 3. Flow - slower flow gets better extraction For 500ml I use 30g of coffee and a cone filter. A flat basket needs a bit more to create a proper bed (I switch to flat at around 60g/1L). Good luck.

Well done, thank you for sharing. I’m looking to replace my countertop espresso machine. It’s a cheaper Breville that we got on-sale. But the water reservoir is plastic, and really, everything on it is plastic. Do you have any suggestions for espresso machines made with less plastic? (Especially where the water interacts with it.) Or advice on how to conduct a similar search?

Just a thought: Have you watched James Hoffmann's [video on the Precision Brewer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfkdkZRv6Mc)?Maybe you can find some inspiration/a solution... `They’re all bland.` What is your dose/ratio?- is it close to the 60g coffee to 1 L water or approx. 1:16

I need something that lets me choose the temp, flow rate and bloom time; has both cone and basket options; has a thermal carafe and *no hot plate*; is easy to clean; and lets me set a time for it to brew automatically before I get up in the morning so I have a reason to get out of bed. That is the Breville Precision Brewer.

Sage/Breville Luxe does a good job imitating pour over. Get the glass carafe, I have the thermal. It stains horribly and is impossible to clean with my big ape hands.

My Breville Precision Brewer is consistent. I can’t compare it against any other machine, but if a bean tastes bitter, I can grind coarser and it will be less bitter. It’s predictable and consistent. I bought it used 3 years ago, use it every single day and the only issue is it sometimes gives me an error code after brewing to do with the water sensor not knowing that it’s used all the water in the tank, and I have to unplug it to reset it. Other than that, I like it. I’d like it more if it didn’t look like a spaceship and had cleaner lines like the Oxo 8, but it works well!

Is it really though? There are presently 15 some brands (some with multiple brewer options) that have [Specialty Coffee Association certified home brewers](https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer) other than the Moccamaster series, and a significant number of them are 'press button and go' brewers like the Moccamaster. Oxo 8 (or 9) cup machine, Breville Precision, just to name a few, fit the same bill.

It still seems like Pour Over might be an option, because the basket area looks very similar to the old model. However, it doesn't appear to be a primary focus any longer base don the menu settings. As they seem to be simplifying to just producing a good cup of coffee and not to much fiddling beyond that.

I know that my anecdote doesn’t mean anything more than a single data point, but I’ve been very happy with my Breville coffee maker. Picked it up on sale at like a Kohl’s or Marshall’s for maybe $125 or $150. It’s lasted about 10 years and is still running well. I clean it and descale based on the units notifications (I think it’s probably a timer vs. tracking anything). It’s a metal, insulted carafe. Breville Hemisphere blender is also great. I think I got that based on America’s Test Kitchen recommendations.

    >I've got the temp upto 98 but I measured the temp coming out the shower head, was getting 80c! It might a fault on the brewer instead. If you measured corectly, then this is the problem. Replace, service, or if it was used before, a descale could solve this. Either way, you have a faulty brewer.

Are you willing to buy used? If so, a Sage/Breville Precision Brewer with the thermal carafe can be had under $100 all day long. There isn't a significant difference in terms of feature set between the precision brewer and it's successor the luxe. Makes a great cup, easy to look after and I'm assuming quite reliable because I haven't seen people complain about issues with it (re: Fellow Aiden)

Sorry I just realised I got bloom time and volume confused - bloom time is 30secs, and volume is 3 bars, half way point. Until recently I made the same mistake with temperature, it used to be at 90 degrees for medium and like 88 for dark and it wasn’t really working. A coffee roaster advised that we should be brewing at 95 for their medium, and once I bumped it up everything was better!

Actually replaced everything for me, I got a 2nd hand 1st gen for £80 on ebay basically unused. Paired with a decent grinder. It's my daily driver everyday. It's consistent and easy. Just set and forget before bed and fresh, delicious coffee in the morning. I probably would never go back to home espresso unless I get significantly more time in my life.

I agree with all of that except I prefer an uninsulated glass carafe on a hot plate rather than an insulated carafe (heresy, I know).  Luckily for me Breville offers a variant of their Precision Brewer with that one difference, so that's what I have.

Same. Bought it full price though but worth it. They're called Sage in Europe (I guess the website redirects though) and they also have a glass carafe one with heat plate but don't get that. The insulated one will keep your coffee warm for roughly a working day and heat plates burn your coffee.

    1. Yes you can still make cold brew and it appears you can set longer durations than the prior machine. 2. Yes you can set a new time like the previous machine. 3. I am not sure what a v60 is, but the answer is maybe because the brewer basket and carafe look identical to the previous machine. 4. Yes, the settings are saved. However, I’m not sure if they’ll survive a power failure. 5. The manual list two versions with one including a glass carafe and heating plate. 6. It looks like a replacement for the precision brewer, however, I don’t work for the company so I cannot speak for them.

Thanks for all this info! I held off on the purchase since I have the Fellow Aiden but I was wondering how much the Luxe was going to try to compete with Fellows ability to be customized in ways like creating separate "pours" to simulate pour over. Seems like the have gone a simpler route to be sure you just get a good cup of coffee but then still included some features that allow you to tinker with the brew method. Too bad the pour over option was removed too. I was always intrigued by that!!

As others have, I also landed on this thread searching for advice for cleaning the Breville Thermal Carafe Lid. After seeing what OP described, I also attempted to reach out to Breville Support. After calling and waiting on hold for 30 minutes, when I asked about cleaning the lid, the customer service rep literally hung up. I figured I maybe got disconnected so I called again and waited on hold only to be hung up on again immediately after explaining the problem. Not sure what the hell the deal is there. The replacement carafe is STILL out of stock on their website. I feel pretty crappy having purchased and recommended this product to several people only to learn of this glaring and unresolvable problem that they are adamant to not support.

I would go for the Bonavita BV1901TS Connoisseur for longevity, ease of use and taste in the cup. The breville Precision Brewer have more gadgets, possibilities and a nice screen which may put the Bonavita in a ''boring'' state for you and wins for the convenience/features aspect. Both are SCA certified (temperature accuracy thing) and are good brewers, so can't go wrong with any of them.

It’s not hard, but it takes time, and if I wanted more of a manual process I would use my Chemex. I’ll be moving to a Breville luxe during the Amazon prime days sale at the end of the month.

Honestly the V60 learning curve is maybe 2 to 3 weeks before it stops feeling like guesswork not months. The variables sound scary but once you lock in a recipe you just repeat it. That said, your instinct about building a reference point first is not wrong either. Good coffee making equipment like the Precision Brewer genuinely teaches you what properly extracted coffee tastes like, which makes manual brewing click faster when you eventually switch.
