r/cybersecurity · Microsoft insists Defender is enough for most PCs, but admits third‑party antivirus tools still offer extras it can’t match

The keyword is "antivirus". If that's their comparison, yeah I'm sure they measure up well against Norton and McAfee. I'm happy paying for a tool that actively blocks suspicious/known malicious connections and kills processes when they behave suspiciously. Extras like checking the hosts file on a routine basis is a cherry on top. That's more of an EDR but they're hesitant to market it that way to consumer markets so they call it something like total security. Several vendors do this, not an ad so I'm not going to point to any specific one. Defender's a bit limp by comparison. "Are you sure you want to run this file? We don't know who made it" isn't really any kind of caution tape to people who think "yeah I want to run it, why do you think I double-clicked it?" and click through anyway.

Norton is pure and utter ransomware. They even bake upselling ads into its default scans. To trick its paying customers into buying more rubbish they don’t need. It’s beyond belief how anyone would find this acceptable.

r/antivirus · Why is Norton 360 screenshotting my browser?

Yeah norton does that... To "help identify dangerous websites". It's actually just using the screenshots to create a profile of you and sell your data away. I know I'll be downvoated for this but if you're not installing software regularly, you don't need a dedicated antivirus app. MS Defender is good enough for 80% of computer owners.

r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software

For home users the honest answer is that Norton and its family of products are rarely worth the cost in 2026. Windows Defender has closed the gap significantly and for most personal use cases performs comparably to paid consumer antivirus in independent lab tests. The specific issue with Norton and the brands you mentioned, Avast, AVG, Avira, all now under Gen Digital, is that their business model has shifted heavily toward upselling VPNs, identity monitoring, password managers, and other subscription add-ons. The core antivirus is often the loss leader. Avast in particular had a significant scandal in 2020 where their subsidiary was caught selling user browsing data to third parties including major corporations, which is a difficult thing to overlook for a security product whose entire value proposition is protecting your privacy. For Symantec it depends heavily on whether you are talking about the consumer or enterprise side. The consumer Norton brand was sold off and Symantec rebranded to Broadcom on the enterprise side. Broadcom's Symantec endpoint products are still genuinely competitive in enterprise environments where you need centralised management, policy enforcement, and integration with broader security infrastructure. That is a completely different conversation from the consumer Norton product. The practical recommendation for most home users is Windows Defender plus good habits, a reputable DNS filter like Cloudflare [1.1.1.1](http://1.1.1.1), and a browser extension like uBlock Origin. That combination costs nothing and covers the vast majority of real threats. If you want a paid option Malwarebytes Premium has a cleaner reputation than the Gen Digital family and a more straightforward business model.

Speed Disk. That takes me back. You are not wrong that the consumer security brand has been coasting on name recognition for decades. Good hygiene wins the day is exactly the right message and probably always was — the product was never the moat, the fear of not having it was.

r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software

Exactly right. The "for now" caveat is worth keeping though — Microsoft's broader product decisions have been erratic enough lately that it is worth having a contingency in mind. But for the current moment Defender is genuinely solid for home users and the people still paying for Norton or McAfee are largely doing so out of habit rather than necessity.

I question where you saw Norton 360 outperforming Bitdefender, from everything I’ve researched, Bitdefender is the top with tests while Norton *can* let some malware through, and particularly isn’t great about recovering ransomware corrupted files. Part of the reason I jumped from Norton was how it performed compared to others during tests. That may have changed though as that was years ago and maybe they got better. I abandoned Norton because I was not thrilled with their performance for the other services they provided as well. Their password manager was slow and their UI was awful. The VPN slowed everything down, and their utilities program wasn’t doing anything different than SupportAssist. I was also very turned off by their crypto miner “feature” (I believe they abandoned this but was a reason I wanted to leave them) At the time I jumped, the alternatives I went with were cheaper/evened out and I haven’t looked back. Norton might come in a complete package but it’s not all the best, in my opinion. Plus, I did some research into LifeLock, and it’s not all it’s cracked up to be based on user experiences. I don’t *hate* Norton but I think there’s better alternatives.

I’m not sure how you are getting the $30/year tbh. Having looked at the Amazon listing, it’s only for new subscribers and the renewal price is somewhere around $100-$120/year. A Bitdefender family plan can get you $70 introductory year and then $140/year covering 25 devices with five separate accounts but it sounds like it’s for your personal use and not like you’re having others use it, so maybe that’s not the route you’re going for. Either way, if you like Norton I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Some of the Amazon reviews might answer why some ppl dislike it though. I didn’t have too many issues beyond performance. Also, according to Bitdefender themselves, Norton scores only slightly lower than them, so hey, I guess they improved their scanning abilities since when I switched. That’s good for their customers at least. Not enough to make me switch, but good on them.

r/antivirus · Can I stop the AVG and Avast apps from opening on startup?

Avast and AVG use the exact same detection engine so not only is it not providing any additional protection, it might actually prevent either of them from properly quarantining malware. Frankly, everything under the Gen Digital umbrella (Norton / Avira / Avast / AVG) have gotten worse and worse with popups and marketing. Window Defender is pretty decent now and built-into the operating system but it lacks network level protectio. If you're worried about him getting tricked by phishing or other online threats, you could check out Bitdefender Free like another person suggested.

I've used Norton since the 90's When it was still Symantec's! But now, man, I hate as well! 2025 was the last year I paid for this add scam, first they ask if you're interested till you hop on. You pay and then they scan the whole thing amd say you have many problems and ofcourse if you want to fix it. Wel duh, if you ask me ofcourse I want to fix it. Oh well, another 80buck!!! What the hell! The moment i really had it was when I was in game in the middle of a dogfight and all of a sudden my main screen minimalized and Norton appeared on my screen asking if I wanted to get yet another piece of their spam shit... That was it for me, I deleted the whole thing off my pc, installed windows defender. Basta! And no more bills to shit nightmare...

Today's PC's have gigabyte's of RAM, 600 - 800 MB is nothing, and it's barely using your CPU. Bitdefender has a wider feature set than Norton, so I'm not surprised it uses a bit more resources. Norton is garbage, I'd use Windows Defender before I turned my security over to Norton, and Defender is not great. Bitdefender is one of the best antivirus's out there, it's a step above ESET.

I wouldn't bother. If you want to do the equivalent of putting a helmet on your PC so it doesn't hurt itself trying to walk in a straight line, sure go ahead. I haven't used anything but Windows Defender at home since it's been a thing and I've seen zero malware. The last time I got malware was MSBlaster on Win XP. Norton just has so much more extra shit beyond the basic core scanning engine. I don't really care about "anti-tracking" or a shitty VPN that harvests your data in place of your ISP doing so.

r/antivirus · What antivirus I should get? I am really confused between Norton360 and BitDefender.

Hello, Oh, it is completely reasonable to ask, but you just need to keep in mind that the people responding may use their computers in entirely different ways than you (and have very different configurations) that their responses, even if detailed, may be off the mark because of how you use your computer. In other words, take everything with a grain of salt. There are [independent testers](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_understanding_antivirus_software_tests_and_testers) who look at the various security programs as well, and while keeping the above provisios in mind, they can be a source of good information, at least when it comes to comparing detection rates and performance over time. A final thought I'll leave you with: Norton is actually a sub-brand of Gen Digital, the same company that owns Avast, AVG, Avira, Bulldog, LifeLock, Piriform, and so on, and all of their antivirus programs use the same underlying engine. So, detection is going to be the same for all of these programs, and the only difference will be in their user interfaces, plus any ancillary features they might offer that is specific to a brand (if any). Bitdefender doesn't re-brand its software, but they do license their detection engine to many different companies (Acronis, ALYac, Arcabit, Cisco, Cybereason, Emsisoft, FireEye, G Data, MWTI (eScan) Seqrite, Total Defense, and VIPRE (ThreatTrack) to name a few), so these companies security products are going to have similar detection rates and performance, at least when it comes to their antivirus engines. Now, those are OEM deals and not just re-skinning, so those companies will have other features and integrations as well, which can make a difference in detection and response, but it is something to keep in mind as well. Best of luck in choosing your security solution. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

r/antivirus · Norton 360 is interrupting my PC Internet connection. This is the message when I try to uninstall it. HELP!

Hello, Norton is a sub-brand of Gen Digital (they also own Avast, AVG, Avira, Bulldog, Lifelock, Piriform and some other brands). For assistance with uninstalling Norton 360, you can try asking in r/NortonAntiVirus or contacting them directly at https://community.norton.com/. I could not find any way to contact Norton for support, but I did find two pages on Gen Digital's website, as well as two on Norton's website with contact information: * https://newsroom.gendigital.com/media-inquiries * https://investor.gendigital.com/overview/default.aspx * https://us.norton.com/privacy * https://lifelock.norton.com/about/contact A search found the following address as well: Gen Digital 60 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Suite 1000 Tempe, AZ 85281 I would suggest using the email addresses and phone numbers before writing a letter if your issue is urgent. Now, onto some more general information about uninstalling antivirus software. ----- The correct way to uninstall antivirus software is to follow the developer's instructions. Usually it is something along the lines of uninstalling it from the Start Menu or Control Panel, or possibly downloading some kind of specialized uninstall tool from the developer to remove any leftover remnants, if needed. Every reputable antivirus developer has an article in their knowledgebase explaining exactly how to uninstall their software, step-by-step. Following these instructions is the correct way to do things. No antivirus program should be uninstallable through a third-party uninstallation program or by deleting its directories or files as their anti-tamper mechanisms should protect against those. If doing so disabled your antivirus software it would be the first thing a computer virus or other malicious program would do in order to gain control of your computer. Attempting to do so can, however, damage the antivirus software, leaving it broken or corrupt and putting the computer into a non-working state with performance issues, conflicts, and crashes that are extremely difficult to identify and troubleshoot. If the antivirus program's normal uninstall did not work, the software's installation was probably damaged by the attempts to delete it. Sometimes you can try reinstalling the software, which might repair the damage and put a working copy onto the computer, and then uninstall that following the manufacturer's instructions. If that does not work, though, you will need to contact the company's technical support for assistance in manually uninstalling the damaged installation. For most antivirus programs, it is sufficient to uninstall it by either right-clicking on its icon in the Start Menu and selecting *Uninstall* from the context menu that pops up, or by running the **Uninstall or change a program** Control Panel applet (filename: `APPWIZ.CPL`), finding the antivirus software in the list, then right clicking on it and selecting **Uninstall**. This allows the software to be uninstalled using its own uninstall logic. If there is ever an issue with these methods, antivirus companies typically have specialized tools or manual instructions they can provide to remove any orphaned remnants that were left over after uninstallation. If you first attempted to delete the antivirus software using some other means, it is possible you damaged the installation. You must contact the company's technical support for manual assistance in uninstalling it after it has been damaged, as they are going to be most familiar with how their software is installed and uninstalled, and be able to help you fix it. Also, although it is over a decade old, the following blog post might be of use/interest: https://goretsky.wordpress.com/2013/06/11/the-secret-guide-to-uninstalling-any-anti-virus-software/ Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

Hello, Each of the vendors you asked about offers a trial version, so… try each one, and see which one works best on your computer for your use. Most antivirus programs have a negligible impact on performance these days, even on games. In terms of using something free versus buying something, most commercial antivirus programs have trial versions that you can install and see if they meet your needs. Whether or not a program is free or has a subscription has no impact on its performance or efficacy. You could install something that is free and it works well on your system and provides a high level of protection, or pay a lot of money for an antivirus program which doesn't. As far as actual antivirus/antimalware/internet security/security suite/endpoint protection (etc. etc. etc.) programs go, there is no one "best" program, as each has its plusses and minuses. Performance, system resource usage, and detection rates change with every update, and those occur multiple times throughout the day. So, any of the programs listed in the wiki at https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_anti-virus_.28aka_anti-malware.29_developers would be a good starting place to find what is **best for you**. It also lists the countries each developer is headquartered in. Start by searching the *OS Support?* to find out which developers make security software for your device's operating system. * If you are looking for a **free** program, check out the ones with a check mark ("✔️") in the *Free Version?* column. * If you are looking for a **paid** program, check out the ones with a check mark ("✔️") in the *Paid Version?* column. r/antivirus · Norton 360 keeps bothering me more than viruses

I’ve been working with computers for about 35 years, and I currently work for a large, well-known technology company. My advice: get rid of Norton. Honestly, I put Norton, McAfee, and a lot of the other third-party antivirus suites in the same category these days. They tend to become bloated, constantly run services in the background, throw notifications and upsells at you, and sometimes cause more performance and compatibility headaches than they prevent. You paid for antivirus software, you shouldn’t have to deal with advertisements from it constantly trying to sell you more software. Windows already has Microsoft Defender built in, and for the overwhelming majority of home users, that’s what I recommend. It integrates directly with Windows, updates automatically through Windows Update, provides real-time protection, and most importantly, it generally just shuts up and does its job in the background. Combine Defender with keeping Windows and your browser updated, using some common sense about what you download/open, and maintaining good backups, and you’ve got a solid setup without installing a security suite that tries to take over the whole computer. Just giving you my experience after roughly 35 years of working with computers. If this were my machine, Norton would be the first thing I’d uninstall.

The cancel auto renewal thing never works guys, It gets stuck on a loading screen forever, so you have to get into their chat support, AI will keep replying to you. When you say, I want to cancel my auto renewal, it tries to convince you with multiple discounts and by mistake do not click yer or no without reading what it is saying, otherwise it might seem like you are saying yet to cancel, but what you are end up agreeing to it is say yes to remain in norton's shackles with 10% discount.

Trying to cancel the auto renewal of subscription but the page never completely loads, stuck on all 4 of my browsers across my pc, laptop, mobile. Such scammer company, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a team to release viruses too which can then be detected by just their software to keep them relevant. sigh.

I have this shit programme as well but its never closed a game. It does do the upselling shit though but not too often. Ive always had the view I dont mind paying for the best protection and putting up with some crap to have it. I will always read reviews on all of them and decide when its due for renewal. Norton had a great offer I couldnt turn down last time for that for the price. I need to manage my family devices as well so want a multi device set up and Norton gave me 10 devices for 2 years for something like £60.

r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton?

I bought my gaming laptop a few months ago. More specifically, an Acer Nitro 18. The website that sold it included a year of Norton 360 for gamers. At the time, I would have begged for literally anything else. I hate these bigger, more common anti-virus brands. McAfee is obviously the worst, and uninstall that crap immediately. But for one reason or another, I decided to use this freebie and started using Norton 360 for gamers... ... and I'm SO glad I gave it a chance! I expected something really intrusive and annoying, but it isn't. It lets you enable or disable features without a fuss. Yes, it will alert when it detects a threat, as they all do, but that's it. It's there in the background, doing its thing, being very light on resources with some great features. Scans are fast, there is a great VPN and tracker blocker built in, and the software itself is very easy to use. Doesn't mean I'll keep it after a year, but Norton is much better than it was the last time I used it.

I don’t see any Bitdefender product on their web site that covers 10 devices. Please provide the link to it. I only see options for 5 devices and 25 devices. And providing a credit card is not a big deal. It takes less than 10 seconds to turn off auto-renewal.

    Renouvellement
r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton?

Agree that their VPN is slow. But I don’t really use their password manager or their cloud backup or their life lock. So yeah, it’s $30 for a year to purely use Norton as an anti-virus software protection for 10 devices. Btw, have never encountered any performance issues with or while running Norton. Yes, Bitdefender may beat Norton in some tests but it’s not a significant upgrade as far as I’m concerned. Also, from the pricing perspective, I don’t think I can get Bitdefender protection for 10 devices and unlimited VPN for $30. So while I’m on the lookout for a better alternative, it has to be significantly better with marginal price increase and offer the 10-device protection and VPN. I don’t want to fix something that’s not broken.

r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton?

Because if you're a tech savvy person, you don't need to pay for an AV, Defender along with a few other helpful tools, like an ad blocker is good enough. That means you don't need to pay for an AV, and if you do need a 3rd party one, Bitdefender has a free version. You don't need all of their gimmicks and crap in the paid versions. If you need a VPN, get an actual VPN from a reputable provider, the ones from AV companies usually suck. Also Norton has a horrible reputation for their AV being so baked in that it's practically malware and you had to do a lot of stuff to remove it. Most of the big name consumer AVs all score pretty similarly so you don't necessarily have to pay for Norton or BD, Defender will catch the average run of the mill malware that the others will catch

No you just didn't do enough research bitdefender has a (family) edition that's reasonably priced and covers 10 devices. One of the big negatives people don't like with Norton and Mcafee if the ads and nagging for sure but also over the past few years they started (demanding) and requiring your credit card to use it... So if you buy a license on Amazon or some other site you can't use it without linking your credit card ... Why you might ask... Because they WANT you to forget and let it auto renew at a higher price.... Which is scummy/scammy.

I don't know if the translation is accurate. Well, then if you know that they ALL spy which I'm sure they all do since they are all owned by the evils, then obviously there is no good solution. I'm finishing up a video on a so called "free" internet if that's even possible considering the evils control the entire internet & always have. I'll hopefully upload it to the channel tonight or tomorrow.

r/antivirus · McAfee - is it being dramatic?

That actually sounds totally normal for many AVs depending on the type of mod. Does it contain DLL files or is it self installing? VIRUS! Is it a BepinEx mod? VIRUS! Has it recently been updated and is new? VIRUS! Are you downloading it from a "suspicious" website (which can include NexusMods)? VIRUS! Welcome to the fun world of false(?) positives and modding in general. Norton does it, Defender does it, Kaspersky does it... they all have their weirdness.

If you're not paying for it, it's fine. It used to be the premier software toolset but now it's just meh. I used it for over 20 years but after they started bloating and then pushing services I didn't need all the time, I dropped it. There are so many completely free options that do the same thing now, without a bunch of pop up sales telling you to buy the next level of nonsense.

r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good

Comparing Google to an antivirus Its not the same at all, Google is an ad based service running in ur phone sandbox you dont expect privacy from it. an antivirus runs at kernel level with total access to your system. You expect an antivirus to protect you, not act like the threat. Also, FTC fines act after the damage is done, there's no guarantee that Avast won't steal from you again (if it isn't already) even if FTC has them threatened. In cybersecurity, when a tool with total power breaks basic trust, you dont wait for the FTC to discover it in 5 years, you simply stop using it. And saying it was under previous ownership ignores that Norton literally bundled crypto miner, bloatware into their software and uses scareware to make you buy their program. Having to dig into settings to turn off telemetry on a security tool proves that their philosophy remains the same. If a security app breaks trust in this way, no rebranding fix that.

r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software

With modern encrypted malware it, consumer grade AV is pretty useless. I see better detection monitoring our of a home network monitoring software on a router or firewall, however you need a device with sufficient processor capability to run it (enthusiast grade). If you want an alternative to Norton AV, bitdefender tests better. Still misses 70%. Better practice is to nuke and reinstall your devices at least annually.

r/antivirus · Spybot Search and Destroy --- anyone still using it?

Spybot is an obsolete product! In the early 2000s, it was used to clear spyware and simple malwares like a Trojan. Modern malwares are architectural different and were designed to easily bypass older detection methods. It's slow because it relies on outdated databases and isn't optimized for modern systems. Most of the scanner these days use cloud intelligence and behavioural analysis which are faster and more accurate! MB, EMSI, Norton Power Eraser, KVRT, Sophos Scan and Clean are better than Spybot!

Kaspersky I’d say is the best. Bitdefender as an alternative. Both gives you excellent protection for free. But you’re gonna buy a premium antivirus, choose one of them, probably Kaspersky because it is cheaper and offers better protection. You should not get Norton under any circumstances.

This. **Tip for heavy discount:** You can buy a year of Norton AV on Amazon for multiple devices for about $20-$25. Since it renews at $89+, disable auto-renew and set a yearly reminder to repurchase. I've been doing this for years. If you get in the habit of doing this around black friday, you can get it closer to $20.

But Norton was not the problem here. You subcripted to unnecessary services that have nothing to do with the Anti-Virus, then ran them all on top of each other. You paying 500$ for a subcription is ridiculous, as there is no plan at Norton that charges that much. The most expensive plan at Norton is 350$ per year. If you stick to the Anti-Virus and ignore the bloat, you'll find no issues at all.

Which one? None. IMO, MalwareBytes is still not an actual antivirus, and hasn't found me anything for years and years. Norton's catch-rate is fine but if Norton breaks it will take your PC down with it. Trash. (Shame. Used to be the gold standard.) Bitdefender is fine, I guess, and less prone to bricking Windows, but still unnecessary. I use: Windows Defender as the only active protection, plus SUPERAntiSpyware Free (manual updates, manual scans,) plus Spyware Blaster (passive blacklist,) plus Ghostery in my browsers (blocks ads and general chicanery.)
