AVG

r/antivirus · AVG detected an AVAST file as malware People who listen to people that suggest AVG as any sort of an AV solution.
r/antivirus · AVG detected an AVAST file as malware That's hilarious! I remember the one time I tried AVG. My PC got infected and the virus infected the AVG executable. AVG reported itself as infected and couldn't even repair itself. That was the one time and last time I tried AVG.
r/antivirus · AVG antivirus truth or not? I had AVG once on a PC. I was foolish and ran an EXE I shouldn't have. It infected that PC. The main process for AVG became infected and AVG reported itself as being infected and that it couldn't repair itself. I know it was a long time ago but I lost all trust in AVG at that point. I recommend finding a better option.

r/antivirus · Norton has become too greedy Norton went to hell after the Avast aquisition. They constantly want to upsell you, spam you with pop ads and use the Avast engine now completely abandoning the legacy Norton version from 2024. It's basically Avast in a new skin. Same with AVG.

r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software For home users the honest answer is that Norton and its family of products are rarely worth the cost in 2026. Windows Defender has closed the gap significantly and for most personal use cases performs comparably to paid consumer antivirus in independent lab tests. The specific issue with Norton and the brands you mentioned, Avast, AVG, Avira, all now under Gen Digital, is that their business model has shifted heavily toward upselling VPNs, identity monitoring, password managers, and other subscription add-ons. The core antivirus is often the loss leader. Avast in particular had a significant scandal in 2020 where their subsidiary was caught selling user browsing data to third parties including major corporations, which is a difficult thing to overlook for a security product whose entire value proposition is protecting your privacy. For Symantec it depends heavily on whether you are talking about the consumer or enterprise side. The consumer Norton brand was sold off and Symantec rebranded to Broadcom on the enterprise side. Broadcom's Symantec endpoint products are still genuinely competitive in enterprise environments where you need centralised management, policy enforcement, and integration with broader security infrastructure. That is a completely different conversation from the consumer Norton product. The practical recommendation for most home users is Windows Defender plus good habits, a reputable DNS filter like Cloudflare [1.1.1.1](http://1.1.1.1), and a browser extension like uBlock Origin. That combination costs nothing and covers the vast majority of real threats. If you want a paid option Malwarebytes Premium has a cleaner reputation than the Gen Digital family and a more straightforward business model.

r/antivirus · Can I stop the AVG and Avast apps from opening on startup? Avast and AVG use the exact same detection engine so not only is it not providing any additional protection, it might actually prevent either of them from properly quarantining malware. Frankly, everything under the Gen Digital umbrella (Norton / Avira / Avast / AVG) have gotten worse and worse with popups and marketing. Window Defender is pretty decent now and built-into the operating system but it lacks network level protectio. If you're worried about him getting tricked by phishing or other online threats, you could check out Bitdefender Free like another person suggested.

r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free They are repackaged variants of the same core AV and browser detection engines. Avast One has more features, including an in-built Firewall, and File Shield ransomware folder protection, similar to Controlled Folder access in Windows Security/Defender. Note, both display endless advert and ‘warning’ popups, promoting their premium version. Essentially you pay to switch the adverts off, and add a few nominal features. Windows Security is an effective, set and forget, ad free alternative. If you use a browser other than Edge, install Bitdefender Traffic Light browser extension, giving you excellent protection against phishing and malware sites. Bitdefender AV Free, like Windows Security, is more set and forget, but will display advert popups, though less often than Avast. Very strong browser and malware protection, but a higher background load than Avast. Windows Security is about the lightest load of all.

r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good AVG, Avast, Norton ... all the same. They are good at detection
r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good There is no proof or new case showing that these programs are currently spying on you. That's why I said it's old news. It's also called an **antivirus**, not **antispyware**. OP asked whether AVG is good, and I said yes because, based on my own testing, these products perform really well when it comes to detection. I personally use Avast Premium and I'm happy with it. I did not recommend anything, I simply answered a question OP had.

r/antivirus · Think twice before renewing your Norton subscription — has Norton become complacent? Hello, In September 2024, Gen Digital, which is Norton's parent company, replaced the Symantec detection engine and associated logic with the Avast engine, which they own as well. Basically, Avast, AVG, Avira, Bulldog, Norton and any of Gen Digital's other brands are reskinned versions of Avast now. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
r/antivirus · What antivirus I should get? I am really confused between Norton360 and BitDefender. Hello, Oh, it is completely reasonable to ask, but you just need to keep in mind that the people responding may use their computers in entirely different ways than you (and have very different configurations) that their responses, even if detailed, may be off the mark because of how you use your computer. In other words, take everything with a grain of salt. There are [independent testers](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_understanding_antivirus_software_tests_and_testers) who look at the various security programs as well, and while keeping the above provisios in mind, they can be a source of good information, at least when it comes to comparing detection rates and performance over time. A final thought I'll leave you with: Norton is actually a sub-brand of Gen Digital, the same company that owns Avast, AVG, Avira, Bulldog, LifeLock, Piriform, and so on, and all of their antivirus programs use the same underlying engine. So, detection is going to be the same for all of these programs, and the only difference will be in their user interfaces, plus any ancillary features they might offer that is specific to a brand (if any). Bitdefender doesn't re-brand its software, but they do license their detection engine to many different companies (Acronis, ALYac, Arcabit, Cisco, Cybereason, Emsisoft, FireEye, G Data, MWTI (eScan) Seqrite, Total Defense, and VIPRE (ThreatTrack) to name a few), so these companies security products are going to have similar detection rates and performance, at least when it comes to their antivirus engines. Now, those are OEM deals and not just re-skinning, so those companies will have other features and integrations as well, which can make a difference in detection and response, but it is something to keep in mind as well. Best of luck in choosing your security solution. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good Buyer beware! AVG is one of those companies that makes it near impossible to cancel after you pay them. I was on the phone for over an hour; denied more than 5 different discount offers, and confirmed that I wanted to cancel more than 3 times. They still tried to charge my account for auto-renewal! I'm glad that I had the foresight to have the bank issue me a new card and cancel the old card number. P.S. They use the same practice when you uninstall the program. Had to go through at least 5 different buttons to uninstall (with one screen on a time limit, if you're not fast enough it cancels the uninstall request). written on 08/31/2026

My quick ChatGpt and Reddit research convinced me that my built-in Windows Defender would do the same job. AVG has been annoying me for years with its popups and I had to toggle the settings to free enough space for my computer to even function one time. r/antivirus · AVG Antivirus "Silent Mode" is not exactly silent It didn't though. Still getting those.
r/antivirus · Issues changing username or registering new account on AVG Community, support couldn't help Also tried registering a new account using a new email address on a new IP address (different Wi-Fi network) on a fresh browser. Still got the error. Seems there's a general issue with their forum.
r/antivirus · AVG Antivirus "Silent Mode" is not exactly silent I checked the forum and did not find a way to contact a mod or admin (e.g. through their profile or a contact form). I'll prob switch to another free antivirus at this rate.
r/antivirus · AVG Antivirus "Silent Mode" is not exactly silent I would, but I first want to change my username there to something other than my real name which was apparently automatically set when I registered. There isn't a way to change my username in settings. When I tried to create a new account it indicated only 1 account creation was allowed per IP address. I retried on mobile network, same error. I called support (option 1 doesn't work btw; hit option 2) and over a long phone call during which the agent seemed to have questionable capability (eg when remote-controlling my laptop to investigate how to change a username, they clicked on the Notifications tab in my profile like 10 times, which had 2 notifications: welcome and anniversary), they failed to help, even when reportedly consulting with their senior technician, saying they didn't have the ability to whitelist my IP address. Then they tried to sell me an AVG Secure subscription for VPN to get around the IP address error. When I said not interested, they said unfortunately can't help me at this time. I asked if there was a way to submit feedback for the site and app for the issues, they said "use the website". I said I looked all over and didn't find a way to report an issue or leave feedback anywhere on the site (throws me around in circles) or app, only this call. Then they said thanks and a survey will come in a few days, which they emphasized was only for the support experience, not the site or app. Well I guess I'll leave negative feedback for all 3 on that occasion.

r/antivirus · Should I delete AVG antivirus from my computer Old AVG should have it's own dedicated uninstaller. Use that, it's fine. Win 7 was okay, but there is (obviously) no updates, security or otherwise, so you are better off going with a 32bit Linux distro that still gets security patches. There are NOT many left, AntiX comes to mind, I run it on an old Toshiba Satellite A25 I have (just for pure nostalgia reasons, there is no reason to have a 32bit hooked up to the internet, if you do, DO NOT keep personal information on it! ) Pale Moon is a good browser that still supports x86 processors.
