McAfee

r/cybersecurity · Microsoft insists Defender is enough for most PCs, but admits third‑party antivirus tools still offer extras it can’t match The keyword is "antivirus". If that's their comparison, yeah I'm sure they measure up well against Norton and McAfee. I'm happy paying for a tool that actively blocks suspicious/known malicious connections and kills processes when they behave suspiciously. Extras like checking the hosts file on a routine basis is a cherry on top. That's more of an EDR but they're hesitant to market it that way to consumer markets so they call it something like total security. Several vendors do this, not an ad so I'm not going to point to any specific one. Defender's a bit limp by comparison. "Are you sure you want to run this file? We don't know who made it" isn't really any kind of caution tape to people who think "yeah I want to run it, why do you think I double-clicked it?" and click through anyway.

r/antivirus · Anti virus McAfee McAfee is a common adware, a type of malware that avertises products to you in hopes that you pay. It advertises one thing, you pay, then it advertises another. You should remove it from your computer and do a chargeback.

Whatever you go with stay as far away from Norton and McAfee as humanly possible, their "antivirus" software is worthless and works worse than windows defender that's already built into the OS and constantly pester you with emails, popups and notifications, they are the definition of malware.
r/antivirus · McAfee - is it being dramatic? Mcafee is absolute dogshite for an AV, it's worse than built in windows defender and imo it's paid for malware with all the popups, ads and crap it throws in your face to try and get more money out of you, it's also a horrible resource hog. If you want a 3rd party av I'd recommend eset or Bitdefender.

r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software Exactly right. The "for now" caveat is worth keeping though — Microsoft's broader product decisions have been erratic enough lately that it is worth having a contingency in mind. But for the current moment Defender is genuinely solid for home users and the people still paying for Norton or McAfee are largely doing so out of habit rather than necessity.

r/antivirus · Best overall (FREE) Internet security and AV. Yeah, I don't really trust McAfee or Norton, overpriced shitty software that no one likes. I could get a higher antivirus, but I'm not a 9 year old that falls for free robux, free v bucks. I just need to get a is that could block me from suspicious downloads, phishing emails and phishing sites. Ofc I would like to remove those websites what asks you to allow notifs to play the video, or something else. I heard eset is good in it, since I'm a cheap I only allow free items (if temu antivirus then temu antivirusn🥰). I heard that Avast is giving out free VPN, 5GB but fast. I don't know what's better, BitDefender or Kaspersky. Both are nice and usable, but Kaspersky allows only 2 devices per email, BitDefender 10-unlimited.
r/antivirus · Best overall (FREE) Internet security and AV. i heard avg & avast are bought by oni, which "norton owns". norton comes with a cryptominer now. I woudlnt really care if with avast free, avg free even norton free but you buy a thing and you pay them? crazy. McAfee is better in this NGL. I just hate that they pay OEMs to install it.

r/antivirus · Virus/Malware protection Yeah remove McAfee and buy Sophos or Bitdefender. Windows Defender has gotten better but it still misses a ton of things. It's tuned to not be intrusive and because of that it misses many things. It's also not great at detecting malicious behavior, which is why it misses many info stealers lately. Those who are hyper aware of what to avoid can probably run with just Windows Defender and a DNS blocker, but if you aren't, it's best to have the best protecting you. I know what to avoid, been a sysadmin for years and recently pivoted to cyber security, I have two Pi-holes on my network, uBlock Origin in Firefox, and yet I have Bitdefender on my gaming PC and Sophos installed on family members computers. Threats have gotten worse and all it takes is one wrong click, or you think you're downloading from the official 7zip website but in reality it's one of the half dozen copy cat sites with trojans.

r/antivirus · Norton 360 keeps bothering me more than viruses I’ve been working with computers for about 35 years, and I currently work for a large, well-known technology company. My advice: get rid of Norton. Honestly, I put Norton, McAfee, and a lot of the other third-party antivirus suites in the same category these days. They tend to become bloated, constantly run services in the background, throw notifications and upsells at you, and sometimes cause more performance and compatibility headaches than they prevent. You paid for antivirus software, you shouldn’t have to deal with advertisements from it constantly trying to sell you more software. Windows already has Microsoft Defender built in, and for the overwhelming majority of home users, that’s what I recommend. It integrates directly with Windows, updates automatically through Windows Update, provides real-time protection, and most importantly, it generally just shuts up and does its job in the background. Combine Defender with keeping Windows and your browser updated, using some common sense about what you download/open, and maintaining good backups, and you’ve got a solid setup without installing a security suite that tries to take over the whole computer. Just giving you my experience after roughly 35 years of working with computers. If this were my machine, Norton would be the first thing I’d uninstall.

r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton? No you just didn't do enough research bitdefender has a (family) edition that's reasonably priced and covers 10 devices. One of the big negatives people don't like with Norton and Mcafee if the ads and nagging for sure but also over the past few years they started (demanding) and requiring your credit card to use it... So if you buy a license on Amazon or some other site you can't use it without linking your credit card ... Why you might ask... Because they WANT you to forget and let it auto renew at a higher price.... Which is scummy/scammy.

r/antivirus · McAfee - is it being dramatic? That actually sounds totally normal for many AVs depending on the type of mod. Does it contain DLL files or is it self installing? VIRUS! Is it a BepinEx mod? VIRUS! Has it recently been updated and is new? VIRUS! Are you downloading it from a "suspicious" website (which can include NexusMods)? VIRUS! r/antivirus · McAfee Quarantine/Blocking Files The detections are taking place in the IE (Internet Explorer) Internet Cache and are labelled as "attachment script", which seems to indicate that Outlook is trying to view scripts in attachments to Internet Explorer, and McAfee is intercepting them. This isn't as alarming as it sounds; in the mid-to-late 2010s, browsers (including the ones used internally by programs like Outlook) were hardened in various ways, and outside of targeted attacks, an infection just by viewing a web page in a modern browser is almost unheard of. As for solution: finding and deleting the email that's the source of the script. Or just accept that McAfee is just trying to block it, in an awkward way.
