r/antivirus · Can I stop the AVG and Avast apps from opening on startup? Avast and AVG use the exact same detection engine so not only is it not providing any additional protection, it might actually prevent either of them from properly quarantining malware. Frankly, everything under the Gen Digital umbrella (Norton / Avira / Avast / AVG) have gotten worse and worse with popups and marketing. Window Defender is pretty decent now and built-into the operating system but it lacks network level protectio. If you're worried about him getting tricked by phishing or other online threats, you could check out Bitdefender Free like another person suggested.

r/antivirus · Avast One Free vs. Bitdefender Free Bitdefender Free is the better choice for Windows 11 because it is extremely lightweight and straightforward, operating without any ads or upselling, whereas Avast One Free frequently displays notifications and upgrade pop-ups. It does not constantly pester you to purchase the premium version. It consumes fewer system resources and does not slow down the computer. It quietly performs its job in the background without any hassle.

r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free They are repackaged variants of the same core AV and browser detection engines. Avast One has more features, including an in-built Firewall, and File Shield ransomware folder protection, similar to Controlled Folder access in Windows Security/Defender. Note, both display endless advert and ‘warning’ popups, promoting their premium version. Essentially you pay to switch the adverts off, and add a few nominal features. Windows Security is an effective, set and forget, ad free alternative. If you use a browser other than Edge, install Bitdefender Traffic Light browser extension, giving you excellent protection against phishing and malware sites. Bitdefender AV Free, like Windows Security, is more set and forget, but will display advert popups, though less often than Avast. Very strong browser and malware protection, but a higher background load than Avast. Windows Security is about the lightest load of all.
r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free The free version gives you control over main protective elements: malware and scan settings, File Shield, and basic firewall. Certain element such as advanced firewall, and more in-depth malware settings, webcam, VPN, and AI, are specific to the premium version, but are adding features, more than any substantial protective upgrade. If you were to look at Bitdefender Free for example, you'd find over 75% of its controls are locked, in the free version.
r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free What do you mean? Avast Free has an in-built firewall, it works alongside Windows own firewall. AVG and Avast should only be installed on their own. If you're running both AVG and Avast, on the same computer, it can cause issues.
r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free Of the three, Avast One Free provides the most in-built and usable (rather than disabled) free features. Note, unless Avast have changed things, you could previously use it fully without creating an account. The only thing you lose is backing up your settings. But in functional terms, with or without an account is the same.

r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good saying its an antivirus not antispyware makes zero sense. today antivirus is just a general term for software made to protect against ALL malware, including **spyware**, ransomware, trojans, etc. Dismissing it as old news misses the whole point. In 2024 the FTC fined Avast 16.5M for selling user data. An antivirus runs with kernel level permisions, if a company abused that power to track and sell ur browsing history and only stopped cuz they got caught, they broke the most basic rule of cybersecurity. if u wanna trust a company with that track record thats on u.
r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good Comparing Google to an antivirus Its not the same at all, Google is an ad based service running in ur phone sandbox you dont expect privacy from it. an antivirus runs at kernel level with total access to your system. You expect an antivirus to protect you, not act like the threat. Also, FTC fines act after the damage is done, there's no guarantee that Avast won't steal from you again (if it isn't already) even if FTC has them threatened. In cybersecurity, when a tool with total power breaks basic trust, you dont wait for the FTC to discover it in 5 years, you simply stop using it. And saying it was under previous ownership ignores that Norton literally bundled crypto miner, bloatware into their software and uses scareware to make you buy their program. Having to dig into settings to turn off telemetry on a security tool proves that their philosophy remains the same. If a security app breaks trust in this way, no rebranding fix that.
r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good Use whatever you want. I just find it ironic that you recommend programs that are supposed to protect you but are actually spying on you and profiting off you.

r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good AVG, Avast, Norton ... all the same. They are good at detection
r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good This is old news from 2019. Almost every major tech company collects data about you. If you think Avast is the only one doing it, oh boy. Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Discord, your mobile provider, Reddit, Instagram, and plenty of others do the same. As soon as you're connected to the internet, you're being tracked to some extent. It's wrong to assume that an antivirus is inherently bad just because of this.
r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good I know, but because of the FTC, they are legally restricted from harvesting and selling your browsing history for advertising purposes. They are also under heavy scrutiny, meaning another violation could, and most likely would, result in catastrophic financial penalties. On top of that, you can disable several privacy settings to significantly limit or even prevent tracking. Also the original scandal happened under Avast's previous ownership, before NortonLifeLock acquired the company in 2022. Google also has repeatedly faced regulatory action over how it collects, uses, and shares user data and yet you most likely still use it.
r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good There is no proof or new case showing that these programs are currently spying on you. That's why I said it's old news. It's also called an **antivirus**, not **antispyware**. OP asked whether AVG is good, and I said yes because, based on my own testing, these products perform really well when it comes to detection. I personally use Avast Premium and I'm happy with it. I did not recommend anything, I simply answered a question OP had.

r/antivirus · Best overall (FREE) Internet security and AV. Yeah, I don't really trust McAfee or Norton, overpriced shitty software that no one likes. I could get a higher antivirus, but I'm not a 9 year old that falls for free robux, free v bucks. I just need to get a is that could block me from suspicious downloads, phishing emails and phishing sites. Ofc I would like to remove those websites what asks you to allow notifs to play the video, or something else. I heard eset is good in it, since I'm a cheap I only allow free items (if temu antivirus then temu antivirusn🥰). I heard that Avast is giving out free VPN, 5GB but fast. I don't know what's better, BitDefender or Kaspersky. Both are nice and usable, but Kaspersky allows only 2 devices per email, BitDefender 10-unlimited.
r/antivirus · Best overall (FREE) Internet security and AV. Yeah. I got a pw email about a Bitcoin wallet that I dont own. I don't really care if pop-ups come up like once in a week, but IF I AM PLAYING A GAME OR WATCHING YT AND STOOPID AVAST NEEDS TO SAY I HAVE -1 OLD DRIVER.
r/antivirus · Best overall (FREE) Internet security and AV. Yeah I know, Kaspersky had a 100% rt rate on a test (,yt). Avast let much of malware running in the background on our main PC and it slowed it down.

r/antivirus · Think twice before renewing your Norton subscription — has Norton become complacent? Hello, In September 2024, Gen Digital, which is Norton's parent company, replaced the Symantec detection engine and associated logic with the Avast engine, which they own as well. Basically, Avast, AVG, Avira, Bulldog, Norton and any of Gen Digital's other brands are reskinned versions of Avast now. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
r/antivirus · What antivirus I should get? I am really confused between Norton360 and BitDefender. Hello, Oh, it is completely reasonable to ask, but you just need to keep in mind that the people responding may use their computers in entirely different ways than you (and have very different configurations) that their responses, even if detailed, may be off the mark because of how you use your computer. In other words, take everything with a grain of salt. There are [independent testers](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_understanding_antivirus_software_tests_and_testers) who look at the various security programs as well, and while keeping the above provisios in mind, they can be a source of good information, at least when it comes to comparing detection rates and performance over time. A final thought I'll leave you with: Norton is actually a sub-brand of Gen Digital, the same company that owns Avast, AVG, Avira, Bulldog, LifeLock, Piriform, and so on, and all of their antivirus programs use the same underlying engine. So, detection is going to be the same for all of these programs, and the only difference will be in their user interfaces, plus any ancillary features they might offer that is specific to a brand (if any). Bitdefender doesn't re-brand its software, but they do license their detection engine to many different companies (Acronis, ALYac, Arcabit, Cisco, Cybereason, Emsisoft, FireEye, G Data, MWTI (eScan) Seqrite, Total Defense, and VIPRE (ThreatTrack) to name a few), so these companies security products are going to have similar detection rates and performance, at least when it comes to their antivirus engines. Now, those are OEM deals and not just re-skinning, so those companies will have other features and integrations as well, which can make a difference in detection and response, but it is something to keep in mind as well. Best of luck in choosing your security solution. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
r/antivirus · AVG false positive? Hello, Looks like it is a false positive: * https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/comments/1th5qlw/trojan_threat_is_this_real_or_a_false_positive/ * https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/comments/1tgyv5s/avg_false_positive/ Both Norton and AVG use the Avast antivirus engine, so they have detections, including false positives. r/antivirus · Bitdefender vs Kaspersky? I personally have never used an AV other than Defender. If you do gaming, Kaspersky is good. Yeah, it can have really good live monitoring and will catch infostealers. Just don't download suspicious files or unzip any unknown file; you should be good to go with Kaspersky. Also, before running any .exe or unzipping a file, try uploading it to VirusTotal. It has like 70 of the best AVs in the world. Though if it has 1-3 false flags, it's fine as long as AVs like BitDefender, Kaspersky, Defender, and Avast are saying it's safe.

r/antivirus · Am I cooked. There are these random files which I cant delete and are loads of them. TotalAv and Avast says there safe but idk. Anyone know how to delete them 🙏 Your windows install probably corrupted itself, or your drive is dying. most viruses would hide themselves instead of making itself obvious like that and if 2 AVs say they're clean then that makes it even less likely it's a virus

For home users the honest answer is that Norton and its family of products are rarely worth the cost in 2026. Windows Defender has closed the gap significantly and for most personal use cases performs comparably to paid consumer antivirus in independent lab tests. The specific issue with Norton and the brands you mentioned, Avast, AVG, Avira, all now under Gen Digital, is that their business model has shifted heavily toward upselling VPNs, identity monitoring, password managers, and other subscription add-ons. The core antivirus is often the loss leader. Avast in particular had a significant scandal in 2020 where their subsidiary was caught selling user browsing data to third parties including major corporations, which is a difficult thing to overlook for a security product whose entire value proposition is protecting your privacy. For Symantec it depends heavily on whether you are talking about the consumer or enterprise side. The consumer Norton brand was sold off and Symantec rebranded to Broadcom on the enterprise side. Broadcom's Symantec endpoint products are still genuinely competitive in enterprise environments where you need centralised management, policy enforcement, and integration with broader security infrastructure. That is a completely different conversation from the consumer Norton product. The practical recommendation for most home users is Windows Defender plus good habits, a reputable DNS filter like Cloudflare [1.1.1.1](http://1.1.1.1), and a browser extension like uBlock Origin. That combination costs nothing and covers the vast majority of real threats. If you want a paid option Malwarebytes Premium has a cleaner reputation than the Gen Digital family and a more straightforward business model.
