I am actually saying this because I finetuned my own personal defender this morning, below what I activated. Quite simple through powershell with "Set-MpPreference" or local group policy editor. Core protection Real-time monitoring, behavior monitoring, script scanning, and IOAV protection (scan of downloaded files) are all enabled Cloud protection MAPS set to Advanced, safe samples submitted automatically, cloud block level set to High with a 10-second extended timeout PUA protection Audit mode — logged but not blocked Controlled Folder Access Audit mode — ransomware protection active but no blocking, to avoid user disruption Network protection Enabled — blocks malicious URLs and IP's Scanning Daily quick scan at 12:00, max 20% CPU load, low CPU priority, email scanning enabled Definitions Updated ever hour Quarantine Items retained for 60 days

r/cybersecurity · Microsoft insists Defender is enough for most PCs, but admits third‑party antivirus tools still offer extras it can’t match

The keyword is "antivirus". If that's their comparison, yeah I'm sure they measure up well against Norton and McAfee. I'm happy paying for a tool that actively blocks suspicious/known malicious connections and kills processes when they behave suspiciously. Extras like checking the hosts file on a routine basis is a cherry on top. That's more of an EDR but they're hesitant to market it that way to consumer markets so they call it something like total security. Several vendors do this, not an ad so I'm not going to point to any specific one. Defender's a bit limp by comparison. "Are you sure you want to run this file? We don't know who made it" isn't really any kind of caution tape to people who think "yeah I want to run it, why do you think I double-clicked it?" and click through anyway.

r/antivirus · Why is Norton 360 screenshotting my browser?

Yeah norton does that... To "help identify dangerous websites". It's actually just using the screenshots to create a profile of you and sell your data away. I know I'll be downvoated for this but if you're not installing software regularly, you don't need a dedicated antivirus app. MS Defender is good enough for 80% of computer owners.

r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software

For home users the honest answer is that Norton and its family of products are rarely worth the cost in 2026. Windows Defender has closed the gap significantly and for most personal use cases performs comparably to paid consumer antivirus in independent lab tests. The specific issue with Norton and the brands you mentioned, Avast, AVG, Avira, all now under Gen Digital, is that their business model has shifted heavily toward upselling VPNs, identity monitoring, password managers, and other subscription add-ons. The core antivirus is often the loss leader. Avast in particular had a significant scandal in 2020 where their subsidiary was caught selling user browsing data to third parties including major corporations, which is a difficult thing to overlook for a security product whose entire value proposition is protecting your privacy. For Symantec it depends heavily on whether you are talking about the consumer or enterprise side. The consumer Norton brand was sold off and Symantec rebranded to Broadcom on the enterprise side. Broadcom's Symantec endpoint products are still genuinely competitive in enterprise environments where you need centralised management, policy enforcement, and integration with broader security infrastructure. That is a completely different conversation from the consumer Norton product. The practical recommendation for most home users is Windows Defender plus good habits, a reputable DNS filter like Cloudflare [1.1.1.1](http://1.1.1.1), and a browser extension like uBlock Origin. That combination costs nothing and covers the vast majority of real threats. If you want a paid option Malwarebytes Premium has a cleaner reputation than the Gen Digital family and a more straightforward business model.

Exactly right. The "for now" caveat is worth keeping though — Microsoft's broader product decisions have been erratic enough lately that it is worth having a contingency in mind. But for the current moment Defender is genuinely solid for home users and the people still paying for Norton or McAfee are largely doing so out of habit rather than necessity.

Kaspersky Standard anyday. Bitdefender while great lags behind in performance issues.  Don't listen to people who say Defender is good, peace of mind and proactive defense is anyday better. Kaspersky and Bitdefender both excel in that region.

Kaspersky is faster in detection and has less false positives. The threat blocking and Kaspersky Security Network helps in actively protecting the system.

r/cybersecurity · You don't need extra antivirus on Windows 11, Microsoft officially says

Free is a standalone, safe defaults version that strikes a good mix of protection while not shutting down what you probably want to do on your machine. Plan 1 Defender adds enterprise management, policy based controls and centralized monitoring/notifications. Basically all the things you’d want when managing a fleet of computers at scale. Plan 2 adds higher levels of auditing, better data analytics, automated remediation and the things you’d want when managing a massive fleet of computers. The antivirus at the core of defender is the antivirus that is at the core of both of the other plans. It’s not neutered, it’s one of the best pieces AV software you can get right now, and far and away the best free one. I rarely find myself in the position of advocating for Microsoft of all companies, but it is a really good AV and I want to give them credit for it.

r/antivirus · Can I stop the AVG and Avast apps from opening on startup?

Avast and AVG use the exact same detection engine so not only is it not providing any additional protection, it might actually prevent either of them from properly quarantining malware. Frankly, everything under the Gen Digital umbrella (Norton / Avira / Avast / AVG) have gotten worse and worse with popups and marketing. Window Defender is pretty decent now and built-into the operating system but it lacks network level protectio. If you're worried about him getting tricked by phishing or other online threats, you could check out Bitdefender Free like another person suggested.

Whatever you go with stay as far away from Norton and McAfee as humanly possible, their "antivirus" software is worthless and works worse than windows defender that's already built into the OS and constantly pester you with emails, popups and notifications, they are the definition of malware.

r/antivirus · McAfee - is it being dramatic?

Mcafee is absolute dogshite for an AV, it's worse than built in windows defender and imo it's paid for malware with all the popups, ads and crap it throws in your face to try and get more money out of you, it's also a horrible resource hog. If you want a 3rd party av I'd recommend eset or Bitdefender.

r/cybersecurity · Microsoft insists Defender is enough for most PCs, but admits third‑party antivirus tools still offer extras it can’t match

defender genuinely is fine for a single home pc with a sensible user. the "enough for most pcs" line falls apart the second you cross into a 30 to 300 seat smb with shared drives, byod, and people who click invoice.pdf.exe for a living. couple of things people keep skipping in this debate: 1. the gap isn't really detection rate. it's response, rollback, and forensics. defender's edr story outside e5 still feels bolted on, and the telemetry sampling kaleidoscope guy mentioned upthread is a real pain when you're trying to build a timeline. 2. tuning matters more than brand, agreed, but the brands that need the least tuning to be safe-out-of-the-box are the ones smbs without a security engineer should actually pick. defender is not that brand by default. 3. ms support during a real incident is the part everyone underestimates until they need it at 2am. for solo home users, save your money. for anything past 20 seats with no soc, "enough" usually means "we'll find out the hard way."

r/antivirus · How do people pick an antivirus without overthinking it?

Years ago the AV programs were a necessity as Microsoft did nothing to protect you and the AV companies were all fighting to claim the best AV program. Since that time much has changed and AV programs now have added functionality like VPN, Identity protection, driver version monitoring, etc. in an attempt to attract and keep clients but the reality is that most people don't need or want this added functionality and it just bloat. In the mean time Microsoft Defender has enhanced their ability and is now considered among the top AV programs out there and it's built into Windows and it's free and for most people it's adequate for their needs. Now, if you want the absolute BEST AV program out there without the bloatware get **Bitdefender Antivirus Plus**

r/antivirus · If I was looking to replace Norton what are my best choices?

It has 4 buttons -- Defender Default, High, Interactive and Max. High is recommended for most people. Interactive is the same as Max but instead of strict enforcement some of the options are interactive where you can control what happens and override the enforcement assuming you knowwhat you're doings. I wanted to go interactive but had to switch to High as Defender stopped an app update due to update needing to make changes in the apdata folder. Quite honestly I didn't look at the setting offered in interactive or high, I just went with whatever the settings are in High and didn't look at the individual settings.

r/antivirus · If I was looking to replace Norton what are my best choices?

I went with ConfigureDefender instead of DefenderUI as I've been told that it configures Windows Defender the same as DefenderUI but when you exit the program it doesn't stay active in the system tray. As far as an ad blocker I use the Brave Browser with Brave Search and I dont visit sketchy websites. Norton never tagged a site or app so I think I'll be safe enough.

Or host your own DNS servers like Pi-Hole or Technitium on Raspberry Pi devices or similar + An ad-blocker in your browser(s) Keep Malwarebytes free installed but not running all the time in the background for the occasional scan if you think you might have gotten hit with something that Windows Defender didn't catch. Windows Defender also has an "Offline Scan" that does a fair job Great protection that is lite on resources

Mcafee alternatives .. your wording indicates you want the same junk software but with a different name in it..? lol Windows Defender + Quad9 DNS or a free OpenDNS account if you want more control with category blocking and custom white & black lists + an adblocker in your browser(s) If you wanted even more control over your DNS filtering, then you repurpose that old Raspberry Pi device and run Pi-Hole or ADGuard Home or Technitium on it or similar

    r/antivirus · Virus/Malware protection

Install the free version of Revo Uninstaller and use it to uninstall that junk. Run an advanced scan after the McAfee Uninstaller is done .. do not reboot until after you've run the advanced scan and deleted all the bits and pieces left behind .. keep running a scan until it doesn't find anything more .. then reboot The free Windows Defender + using DNS filtering via Quad9 or maybe a free OpenDNS account for more control + adblocker in your browsers = great protection that is lite on resources

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender CPU usage

Today's PC's have gigabyte's of RAM, 600 - 800 MB is nothing, and it's barely using your CPU. Bitdefender has a wider feature set than Norton, so I'm not surprised it uses a bit more resources. Norton is garbage, I'd use Windows Defender before I turned my security over to Norton, and Defender is not great. Bitdefender is one of the best antivirus's out there, it's a step above ESET.

    r/antivirus · Virus/Malware protection

Yeah remove McAfee and buy Sophos or Bitdefender. Windows Defender has gotten better but it still misses a ton of things. It's tuned to not be intrusive and because of that it misses many things. It's also not great at detecting malicious behavior, which is why it misses many info stealers lately. Those who are hyper aware of what to avoid can probably run with just Windows Defender and a DNS blocker, but if you aren't, it's best to have the best protecting you. I know what to avoid, been a sysadmin for years and recently pivoted to cyber security, I have two Pi-holes on my network, uBlock Origin in Firefox, and yet I have Bitdefender on my gaming PC and Sophos installed on family members computers. Threats have gotten worse and all it takes is one wrong click, or you think you're downloading from the official 7zip website but in reality it's one of the half dozen copy cat sites with trojans.

I've used Norton since the 90's When it was still Symantec's! But now, man, I hate as well! 2025 was the last year I paid for this add scam, first they ask if you're interested till you hop on. You pay and then they scan the whole thing amd say you have many problems and ofcourse if you want to fix it. Wel duh, if you ask me ofcourse I want to fix it. Oh well, another 80buck!!! What the hell! The moment i really had it was when I was in game in the middle of a dogfight and all of a sudden my main screen minimalized and Norton appeared on my screen asking if I wanted to get yet another piece of their spam shit... That was it for me, I deleted the whole thing off my pc, installed windows defender. Basta! And no more bills to shit nightmare...

r/antivirus · Your thoughts on ClamAV

This project looks interesting, but for Windows Microsoft Defender has everything listed, for Unix-based OS I think that ClamAV still being very weak, no Machine Learning, no Cloud Scanning, a LOT of false negatives (look in VirusTotal, ClamAV barely detects months old malware). Of course it could be better than nothing but it’s detection rate is very very small in my experience. That project can really improve things in your Unix-based machine, it’s worth a try.

You need to go through all the Security settings in Windows Defender and DefenderUI. You can use the 'Full Scan' from them two, as well as that using the MRT - Malicious Software Removal Tool via pressing the Windows Key & R. Also, use ESET Online free scanner, again ensure all the settings are 'ON' & use 'custom' scan, tick-in the empty boxes, this scan is long and throughout. For more information's can be found online. r/antivirus · Is it worth switching from Windows Defender to a paid antivirus in 2026, or has Defender caught up?

Defender is basic and will not catch the latest viruses or malware as it relies on constant updates after the event when a new strain is identified. Both viruses and malware are becoming far more sophisticated and with the advent of AI driven malware Defender just does not cut it. You really need to consider a solution that protects more of the risks including banking, phishing, ransomware etc. I can highly recommend the Eset products as its light weight and uses a live grid function to ensure that emerging threats are identified and rolled out to systems very quickly.

r/antivirus · Is it worth switching from Windows Defender to a paid antivirus in 2026, or has Defender caught up?

It depends. Security is layers on layers. Defender is not atrocious but virtually every (real) threats are made to bypass it, for obvious reasons. paid antivirus have more layers (folders' protection, better firewall, more agressive settings (but generally you will have to dig in)). I would recommend a paid solution if you can afford it. Remember that nothing will protect you if you are reckless, not even the best av in the market.

r/antivirus · How do people pick an antivirus without overthinking it?

It depends. People saying "you just need that" are missing the big picture. What is your use case? What is your exposure? Your knowledge? Your willingness to learn? What compromises are you willing to accept in terms of security vs usability? But yeah, serious security is thought in terms of layers. I would consider the strict minimum being up-to-date softwares (including defender and an in and out firewall), a strong adblock and a good password manager. After that, it depends.

r/antivirus · Is it worth switching from Windows Defender to a paid antivirus in 2026, or has Defender caught up?

Windows defender has its issues with handling less known malware (that signatures and first scan won't pick up) and sophisticated info stealers. It depends on what you mean by not the most trustworthy source and what you download exactly. Adult entertainment f.e isn't a major problem as this is mostly movie files or images. .exe application is where things can get a bit sketchy. In terms of signatures and basic real time protection defender is market standard. Which is really good remind you, but the behavioral protection has its flaws. Defender choose functionality over a max security approach. When you start a file windows defender analysis in real time and often terminates malware pretty late in the execution chain, there are cases such as certain infostealers where this is too late. But unless you "find exotic ways to get paid software" and other high risk activities, you can stick to defender. It's a very solid product. If not, I would recommend Bitdefender for the max security approach or ESET as the best performance vs security deal.

r/antivirus · Is it worth switching from Windows Defender to a paid antivirus in 2026, or has Defender caught up?

There's definitely a first party risk where malware specifically target defender for its zero day since there's alot of customers using it. But these cases are pretty rare nowadays, so it might not be worth it to go with another solution. Honestly, defender is pretty good at detections for day to day usage, as long as you aren't randomly opening suspicious documents, and are following the best practices of using a standard account (not anyhow giving administrator permissions). You should be good to go. Save and sync your files in the cloud, and also enable ransomware protection, and you'll already be one step ahead of malware.

r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free

They are repackaged variants of the same core AV and browser detection engines. Avast One has more features, including an in-built Firewall, and File Shield ransomware folder protection, similar to Controlled Folder access in Windows Security/Defender. Note, both display endless advert and ‘warning’ popups, promoting their premium version. Essentially you pay to switch the adverts off, and add a few nominal features. Windows Security is an effective, set and forget, ad free alternative. If you use a browser other than Edge, install Bitdefender Traffic Light browser extension, giving you excellent protection against phishing and malware sites. Bitdefender AV Free, like Windows Security, is more set and forget, but will display advert popups, though less often than Avast. Very strong browser and malware protection, but a higher background load than Avast. Windows Security is about the lightest load of all.

r/antivirus · Which is better: Bitdefender free or Microsoft Defender?

The vast majority of malware if not all are going to be designed to bypass Microsoft Defender. Defender is good if stumble upon something well known and old but if it's new, Defender ain't going to be defending anything! Bitdefender is a bit overzealous and aggressive and has a lot of false positives but it's pretty much your only option if you're in the states given Kaspersky is outlawed.

r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best?

I'm not defending or "sugarcoating" Defender. I'm asking for evidence. You said Malwarebytes found two viruses that Defender missed. What were the detection names? Were the files actually confirmed to be malicious? That's pretty important before concluding Defender failed. And yes, Malwarebytes, ESET, Bitdefender, etc. can catch something Defender misses. Defender can also catch something another AV misses. No antivirus has a 100% detection rate. Other people saying "Defender is garbage" isn't evidence either. Show what Malwarebytes actually detected in your case and then we have something meaningful to compare.

    Nettoyage malware
r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best?

You're confusing Windows being a common target with Defender being a weak antivirus. Attackers target Windows because it's the dominant desktop OS, not because Defender is widely used. If you convince someone to paste and run a malicious PowerShell command with administrator privileges, you've already defeated one of the most important security layers: the user. That isn't evidence that Defender is bad. Third-party AV can be disabled, bypassed, or evaded too. Defender's effectiveness should be judged by its actual detection and protection capabilities, not simply by how common it is.

    Windows
r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best?

This really isn't proof that Windows Defender is bad. Malwarebytes detecting two files doesn't automatically mean Defender missed two actual viruses. Different antivirus programs use different detection methods, and false positives happen. The weird behavior in the game doesn't prove malware was responsible either. It could have been a bug, corrupted files, or even part of the game. The important information is missing: What exactly did Malwarebytes detect? Without the detection names, file hashes, or something like VirusTotal results, we don't even know whether those two files were actually malicious. Defender can miss malware, every antivirus can, but one program flagging something another didn't isn't evidence that Defender is no good.

Hi, are toy using the free version of Bitdefender? How much ram does it use while doing simple tasks (eg browsing)? I have Microsoft Defender + Malwarebytes extension on browser and it just does the job for me, however I do very ordinary stuff on my pc. I've been thinking to switch to Bitdefender free as some claim that it's overall a better choice, but I wouldn't want it to hog all the ram (I have 16GB).

Thanks for your opinion How does Microsoft Defender compare to paid antivirus solutions like Bitdefender or Kaspersky when it comes to **infostealers** and **phishing**? I know Defender has improved a lot over the years, but are the paid solutions still noticeably better in those two areas, or is the difference relatively small if someone already uses a secure browser like Brave with uBlock Origin and is careful about what they download?

Do you know if Windows Defender stopped LummaStealer before it managed to steal anything, or did it detect it only after it had already started running? That’s what I’m trying to understand. Detecting it within a few minutes is good, but for an infostealer even a short amount of time can sometimes be enough to steal cookies, tokens, or passwords. Thanks

I ran it too, as i run various on demand scanners occasionally. It had a list of 15+ items infected, but at the end it said there were no issues. So it was tentatively flagging things but confirmed they were fine? It did take a long time, 4+ hours. There was no detailed log or result afterwards so I can't say. It does say it is not a replacement for regular AV.

Yeah of course. But I should point out, malwarebytes free doesn’t offer realtime protection last I checked. If this is the case, then contrary to what the other comments say, Windows Defender will remain active. If it does actually offer realtime protection though, I’d honestly recommend turning it off regardless. Malwarebytes is only good as an on-demand scanner for files.

r/antivirus · Is the free version of bitdefender better or worse than microsoft defender?

It's the same. Pretty much all of them are the same at this point. Some will find virus A and miss B, others will find both, but miss that sketchy website you like, and others will miss both because they were designed to hide from that one specifically. And they don't work together because they all try to lock down the same resources and will often see each other as malware. Many of them all have some built in advertisements trying to get you to sign up for a subscription or higher level of sub. Just pick one and use it. Then use your brain and avoid the dark web, irritating script kiddies on Twitter, becoming the CEO of a major company, plugging random USB devices you found in parking lots into you PC, sketchy sites whose names don't match the URLs, downloading things from places you aren't absolutely sure about, or using your laptop for financial things while at the coffee shop or other public Wi-Fi. Also, stop listening to fear mongering TikToks... they're usually trying to sell you something sketchy...

r/antivirus · McAfee - is it being dramatic?

That actually sounds totally normal for many AVs depending on the type of mod. Does it contain DLL files or is it self installing? VIRUS! Is it a BepinEx mod? VIRUS! Has it recently been updated and is new? VIRUS! Are you downloading it from a "suspicious" website (which can include NexusMods)? VIRUS! Welcome to the fun world of false(?) positives and modding in general. Norton does it, Defender does it, Kaspersky does it... they all have their weirdness.

I haven't used anything but Windows Defender at home since it's been a thing and I've seen zero malware. The last time I got malware was MSBlaster on Win XP. Norton just has so much more extra shit beyond the basic core scanning engine. I don't really care about "anti-tracking" or a shitty VPN that harvests your data in place of your ISP doing so.

With everything I suppose this comes down to context. Defender is fine for simple malware detection but in itself it can't stop people from clicking links to malware, securely shred files, connect to a VPN or do many of the things that commercial antivirus companies seem to offer beyond actually creating something that .. you know.. helps detect and block viruses. I don't want to sound cynical and of course it's great to keep things simple but do we really need all these extra bells and whistles beyond what's necessary for detecting and isolating malware?

It isn't. Microsoft Defender didn't miss 12% of them. It just blocked them post execution, which is pretty fine most of the time. Have a look at the test methodology for more details. And on most AV tests, all AVs are reported as 99% because the tests are all fundamentally flawed. When you put them up against new samples or withhold it access to the cloud, that's where Defender breaks down. Better AVs like Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Sophos etc. on the other hand get a chance to shine here.

r/antivirus · Please help, Bitdefender blocked my PC

Dear Bitdefender, Do the log files you're asking for exist after uninstalling your software? There was simply no way for me to go through the process you requested for generating those logs while I was under fire and my computer was turning into a brick in front of my eyes, with the only thing I could do being a forced shutdown. It took me a long time yesterday to fix this. Normal Windows turned into a brick, so I went into Safe Mode. Of course, over the years Windows has made that complicated: two forced shutdowns, multi-step recovery screens, and entering the BitLocker recovery code, which takes quite a bit of time, every single time. In Safe Mode I checked the system with three tools: sfc /scannow KVRT MSERT All of them came back clean. Then I started uninstalling your software from Safe Mode. Eventually it asked me to restart. It went back into normal Windows. For a moment, everything seemed fine. And then Bitdefender started installing itself again. So, from a clean computer, onto a clean USB drive, I downloaded your special uninstall tool. Twice. And when I tried to run it, I got the following message: "Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation." So I went back to normal Windows. Luckily, the reinstalled Bitdefender hadn't connected to my subscription yet, so it wasn't actually running. I then uninstalled it normally from Windows. Now Windows Defender is running normally, and I ran KVRT once again. Everything looks fine. I'm curious: Is this a classic case of a demanding boss pressuring a programmer to get it done, who then uses AI because they want to go home, and then QA using AI too, and this is what happens? My suggestion: fire the boss, not the programmer. Or... Was this actually the opening shot in a revenge operation by Kaspersky's Russian spies, and should we now prepare ourselves for the Bug Wars? 🪲⚔️🐛🚀

Because if you're a tech savvy person, you don't need to pay for an AV, Defender along with a few other helpful tools, like an ad blocker is good enough. That means you don't need to pay for an AV, and if you do need a 3rd party one, Bitdefender has a free version. You don't need all of their gimmicks and crap in the paid versions. If you need a VPN, get an actual VPN from a reputable provider, the ones from AV companies usually suck. Also Norton has a horrible reputation for their AV being so baked in that it's practically malware and you had to do a lot of stuff to remove it. Most of the big name consumer AVs all score pretty similarly so you don't necessarily have to pay for Norton or BD, Defender will catch the average run of the mill malware that the others will catch

r/antivirus · Norton 360 keeps bothering me more than viruses

I’ve been working with computers for about 35 years, and I currently work for a large, well-known technology company. My advice: get rid of Norton. Honestly, I put Norton, McAfee, and a lot of the other third-party antivirus suites in the same category these days. They tend to become bloated, constantly run services in the background, throw notifications and upsells at you, and sometimes cause more performance and compatibility headaches than they prevent. You paid for antivirus software, you shouldn’t have to deal with advertisements from it constantly trying to sell you more software. Windows already has Microsoft Defender built in, and for the overwhelming majority of home users, that’s what I recommend. It integrates directly with Windows, updates automatically through Windows Update, provides real-time protection, and most importantly, it generally just shuts up and does its job in the background. Combine Defender with keeping Windows and your browser updated, using some common sense about what you download/open, and maintaining good backups, and you’ve got a solid setup without installing a security suite that tries to take over the whole computer. Just giving you my experience after roughly 35 years of working with computers. If this were my machine, Norton would be the first thing I’d uninstall.

r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best?

The problem with Windows Defender is that it's extremely common, which makes it an attractive target, and it's also comparatively easy for malware to abuse built-in Windows administration tools once it has the necessary privileges. That makes social engineering especially effective. A user only has to be convinced to paste some random CMD or PowerShell snippet from the internet because it supposedly "makes the PC faster" or "fixes Windows." Windows key + R, paste something they don't understand, press Enter, and boom, the machine can be compromised. And realistically, a huge number of users still have local administrator rights on their PCs, which makes the impact even worse. With many third-party AV/EDR products, this isn't nearly as straightforward because their protection mechanisms and exclusions usually aren't exposed through ordinary Windows command-line tools and are often protected against local tampering.

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender vs Kaspersky?

I personally have never used an AV other than Defender. If you do gaming, Kaspersky is good. Yeah, it can have really good live monitoring and will catch infostealers. Just don't download suspicious files or unzip any unknown file; you should be good to go with Kaspersky. Also, before running any .exe or unzipping a file, try uploading it to VirusTotal. It has like 70 of the best AVs in the world. Though if it has 1-3 false flags, it's fine as long as AVs like BitDefender, Kaspersky, Defender, and Avast are saying it's safe.

I didn't have anything sensitive on my laptop to be stolen, but if it reached Discord, it probably could have reached everything. Also, I think BitDefender paid is really good at stopping infostealers; even Google and ChatGPT are saying this. But to be honest, as long as you don't go on really sketchy websites and avoid clicking links, you should be good and never even need an AV.

I was actually hit by LummaStealer, one of the most notorious stealers, and as soon as I saw activity on Discord, Windows Defender flagged it and the file running it within a few minutes, which was pretty fast. So, Windows Defender is really good against infostealers, in my case. For zero-day viruses, some can be caught, but the antivirus has to be really good and catch any sort of code injection or modified files. It will catch it, but the average AV cannot because it just looks at the file, not what it's doing.

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender vs Kaspersky?

BitDefender is a bit better, but Kaspersky is really close to it and is also lighter on your PC. However, I'd say you don't really need an antivirus; Defender and uBlock are already really solid.

r/antivirus · is AVG antivirus any good

You would need an IT person's perspective on the actual functionality. My quick ChatGpt and Reddit research convinced me that my built-in Windows Defender would do the same job. AVG has been annoying me for years with its popups and I had to toggle the settings to free enough space for my computer to even function one time. Just removed AVG, feels like the first week I met my laptop, everything running smooth, fast, like new. Its a new horizon...

    r/antivirus · Should I install McAfee??

Having it installed is not worse then windows defender for viruses. But microsoft already has my data and i don't need mcafee to have my data aswell. It will also pester you about paying the second that year runs out. And probably trying to upsell you on different subscriptions during that year. So i would not install it. Get ublock origin tho, that is honestly one of the most important parts to keeping virus free. Id install that for your mom aswell.

    r/antivirus · Should I install McAfee??

It's painfully average in terms of protection capability, practically the same as windows defender give or take. [https://av-comparatives.org/tests/malware-protection-test-september-2025/](https://av-comparatives.org/tests/malware-protection-test-september-2025/) The only thing to lookout for is their hidden "renewal" fee so remember to cancel it before the year runs out.

r/cybersecurity · does anyone actually use antivirus on their laptops

Yes, I have Wazuh running on a home lab with an agent installed on my personal computer. I use auditd to push additional events to the agent. I taught my toddler to interpret the logs and call me if anything diverges from a baseline. In his free time he writes YARA rules. ClamAV is useful as a second opinion as well imo. My wife runs nothing. She turned off Defender via GPO because “it’s listening.” TBD which approach is more effective.

r/cybersecurity · Microsoft insists Defender is enough for most PCs, but admits third‑party antivirus tools still offer extras it can’t match

We had a blue team pentest last year. Most of my PCs have eset ineternet security / AV on them. A handful only had defender running. They found lists of possible exploits from the various products installed on the workstations. On the PCs running Eset and the same vulnerable products, they were squeaky clean. Eset reported over 70k attacks per workstation that weekend. Nothing made it through. Defender is not something I want to trust.

This. This, right here. Defender is absolutely top notch. Microsoft is going to absolute shit elsewhere, probably because of the amount of slop they're shipping, but Defender is still one of the best antimalware platforms (for now).

No, unless they've significantly improved, Norton and Symantec have such a horrible reputation that I would consider it to be malware. For windows systems, I'd recommend using Microsoft Defender, Crowdstrike Falcon, or maybe Eset Nod32 (haven't used last one in a while).

r/antivirus · What in the world is happening with my F-Secure ?

Sorrow to hear that F-Secure has taken this turn, yep. Hope it will get a little better (at least for you) in the next updates, although I doubt they’re going this way with the Avira core. Windows Defender is still okay as a replacement, DefenderUI makes it better too. Add an ad blocker and it’s pretty good to start a new free computer protection. BitDefender TrafficLight extension for your browser is a great touch too. BitDefender/Kaspersky/ESET are better if you are ready to spend money into another AV. Although you may not like BitDefender as much as Kaspersky and ESET since it’s a bit heavy.

r/antivirus · What in the world is happening with my F-Secure ?

Edit: After digging a bit, I found out this : https://malwaretips.com/threads/f-secure-beta-version-updates.133677/ This seems to depict what I have but I don’t understand why my Endpoint Protection isn’t running fully, it doesn’t detect anything. I’ll check if something isn’t configured correctly. Currently it’s using only 30MB of memory and still isn’t detecting my EICAR file while Windows Defender does it perfectly. I reinstalled F-Secure twice and still doesn’t work. I’m not liking what they are turning into.

r/antivirus · What in the world is happening with my F-Secure ?

I had to uninstall the F Secure protection that is included at no charge from my internet service provider Spectrum since the Avira Endpoint protection that has replaced deep guard and other F Secure components literally maxes out CPU usage making my computer unusable until it is done with a virus scan. F Secure has been made aware of this since there have been posts about this issue but it seems F Secure is not interested in resolving the issue but instead blaming the issues on the customers computer configuration/other anti-virus software, they are just sending people to tech support for an issue they are unable fix since the problem is with the software itself. I am on a clean install on Windows 11 Home 64-bit edition, and I am experiencing these issues, so it is not a configuration or having other antivirus software installed problem. [Endpoint Protection Service — F-Secure Community](https://community.f-secure.com/en/discussion/129269/endpoint-protection-service) At this point I will take my chances with the built in antivirus protection in Windows 11.

r/antivirus · Is panda dome reliable?

Panda is, eh. It's not *terrible*, I liked the amount of control it gives, like listing all processes and showing exactly what/why it's blocked things. But thats unnescessary, really. Especially if you don't know/care much about the nerdy things. I cancelled them because they changed how many devices my plan was allowed, without any notification or warning. Found out when I got a warning on one of my computers that no antivirus was running and it wouldn't turn on. :/ Didn't tell me why or anything. But, it was affordable; the essentials version at least. I don't trust the company now and they didn't have amazing detection rates, so I wouldn't reccomend them on anything but being cheap.... wait, no, there's free ones that don't have spammy ads either... So I won't reccomend panda at all. It's probably best to go find a free one with much better detection rates or just use windows defender.

r/antivirus · Looking for McAfee alternatives

McAfee is literally worse than having no antivirus whatsoever, and is easily the worst big name product on the market. If you're on Windows, Windows Defender which is free and built in is vastly superior and more secure than many of the paid products on the market. If you really want to take things a step further, Bitdefender or Kaspersky are generally the best products on the market.

r/antivirus · Do you think Bitdefender triumphs over other anti viruses?

I love it for home use. A couple years ago, I helped an old lady recover her files from her HDD after her computer died. Recently, her son reached out for me asking for help because he got hacked. He was using windows 8 and some type of version of windows defender. So I got him on W11 and gave him bitdefender and I’m very confident in it. I’d love to inquire about/give Bitdefender GravityZone a try for work, but, our security software is managed through our MSP, so if Sophos is what they use, it’s just what we have to stick with

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

Which one? None. IMO, MalwareBytes is still not an actual antivirus, and hasn't found me anything for years and years. Norton's catch-rate is fine but if Norton breaks it will take your PC down with it. Trash. (Shame. Used to be the gold standard.) Bitdefender is fine, I guess, and less prone to bricking Windows, but still unnecessary. I use: Windows Defender as the only active protection, plus SUPERAntiSpyware Free (manual updates, manual scans,) plus Spyware Blaster (passive blacklist,) plus Ghostery in my browsers (blocks ads and general chicanery.)

r/cybersecurity · Microsoft insists Defender is enough for most PCs, but admits third‑party antivirus tools still offer extras it can’t match

It should be illegal for OS company to have it's own antivirus (and ship AV with their OS) 1st - can you trust it? Look at play "protect", apps with nasty trackers and spywares are allowed, developer "declared but nobody verified" what apps actually do. 2nd - if you download something like rufus, they can flag it as virus or malware. You disable some MS program in firewall then it gets enabled after windows update. It will become same as google doesn't like it, google remove it (or you need to wait 24h to install a program, youtube videos are censored so people can't even talk about those programs and apps). Now with android 24h delay to install not "approved" app, soon MS invent a word for "side-load", then implement 24h delay and then just block you for installing anything "not verified" for your own security I know, I can buy my own antivirus but "Microsoft insists Defender is enough" so people will stop buying, independent AV will eventually go out of business, defender will be the only one left. MS "admits third‑party antivirus tools still offer extras it can’t match" - it will never match, it doesn't want to match. "still" - like they are trying to be good OS is spying on users, use them to train AI, sell user data (of course with your "permission").. and it's normal for "home" and "pro" versions to be spyware
