r/antivirus · Surfshark VPN and Antivirus worth it 2026?

I would say surfshark is a little better than most mainstream VPNs (NordVPN, Cyberghost...) but there are still better alternatives, I'm thinking of ProtonVPN which is good in every aspect (But not the BEST in every aspect) in my opinion and is 5€ a month (even less if you take it annually) and MullvadVPN which is great for privacy and anonymity (**A VPN alone won't provide anonymity and privacy if your setup and apps aren't following**) but less good for streaming, there isn't any subscription but you can buy time, 5€ for 30 days, 15€ for 90... and funnily enough you can pay in cash. I recommend taking a standalone antivirus, my go-to are Kaspersky and Eset

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender vs Kaspersky?

I’ve used both Kaspersky Premium and am currently using Bitdefender Total Security. Ive also used others and Windows Defender was one of those. Do I think it’s worth paying for an antivirus? Depends on what you download and browse but a good browser such as Brave along with uBlock is enough for most. I am in Canada and could pick between Kaspersky and Bitdefender. To be honest, both are equally the top tier of paid antiviruses. I went with Bitdefender now and I am loving it. You can’t go wrong with either one…

r/antivirus · Do you think Bitdefender triumphs over other anti viruses?

I’ve ran Kaspersky Premium for 1 year then moved to ESET Premium for 2 years. Tried Sophos Home followed by Malwarebytes Premium afterwards. Both were alright but not impressed. Swapped to Bitdefender and I’m really loving it by far. Sticking with Bitdefender for the long term but it’s a coin flip for me between it and Kaspersky.

r/antivirus · Eset or Sophos which one is the better

Eset is better than Sophos, Kaspersky is better than both. Kaspersky may be a privately owned Russian company, that however doesn’t make it a bad product and without turning the post political any negative bias towards the company or product is either driven by misinformed opinion and hate.

r/antivirus · Eset vs Sophos vs Emsisoft

tbh you can't go wrong with any of those three, just depends on what annoys you the least. the kaspersky debate is endless. totally get why you want to jump ship just so you don't have to think about it anymore. if you want something that just shuts up and does its job without eating your ram, go ESET. it's been the reddit darling for years for a reason. Emsisoft is also super solid if privacy is your absolute #1 concern right now. their behavior blocker is legit and they are very transparent. Sophos is decent but just a heads up, the home version is managed via a web portal. some people love doing it from a browser, but others absolutely hate not having a normal local desktop UI. FWIW, another really lightweight option you might want to look at is MalwareFox. it completely takes over as your primary AV and is super aggressive on adware and zero-day junk without bottlenecking your system like the heavier suites do. good luck man, anything is better than stressing over your AV.

    Vie privée
r/antivirus · Eset vs Sophos vs Emsisoft

just a standard disclaimer up front: ymmv. this is strictly my personal mileage and based on what i've experienced over the years. your exact hardware and the weird niche apps you run will definitely change how these feel. Malware detection: Kaspersky > ESET > Emsisoft > Sophos False positives (least to most annoying): ESET > Kaspersky > Sophos > Emsisoft System impact (lightest to heaviest): ESET > Emsisoft > Kaspersky > Sophos Privacy (most transparent to least): Emsisoft > ESET > Sophos > Kaspersky

    r/antivirus · Sophos vs Kaspersky

Sophos is probably okay but they have not been focusing on their home software for consumers for many years. They have over recent years moved more towards their business/enterprise solutions and the home products have been left behind a bit. So I would say Kaspersky probably a bit better but it's banned in the USA so not good for people there.

15-20 years ago there was plenty of decent options , I myself even used Panda at one point long ago and it was decent but they have long since been surpassed by competition. Competitors have created much more advanced protection most likely because they have more customers/users and money/investment into the products. These days I think there are 3 that sit at the top being Bitdefender/Kaspersky/ESET although not Kaspersky if you live in the USA since it is banned there.

    r/antivirus · kaspersky standard + comodo firewall

Get rid of Comodo, Kaspersky has a built-in firewall that is integrated with their security, meaning that it is able to scan network traffic for known exploit packets and even malware C2 packets meaning that if a malware somehow bypasses a static detection, it cant communicate with its servers and would get detected when it tries to.

Yeah, I don't really trust McAfee or Norton, overpriced shitty software that no one likes. I could get a higher antivirus, but I'm not a 9 year old that falls for free robux, free v bucks. I just need to get a is that could block me from suspicious downloads, phishing emails and phishing sites. Ofc I would like to remove those websites what asks you to allow notifs to play the video, or something else. I heard eset is good in it, since I'm a cheap I only allow free items (if temu antivirus then temu antivirusn🥰). I heard that Avast is giving out free VPN, 5GB but fast. I don't know what's better, BitDefender or Kaspersky. Both are nice and usable, but Kaspersky allows only 2 devices per email, BitDefender 10-unlimited.

r/antivirus · Which is better: Bitdefender free or Microsoft Defender?

It isn't. Microsoft Defender didn't miss 12% of them. It just blocked them post execution, which is pretty fine most of the time. Have a look at the test methodology for more details. And on most AV tests, all AVs are reported as 99% because the tests are all fundamentally flawed. When you put them up against new samples or withhold it access to the cloud, that's where Defender breaks down. Better AVs like Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Sophos etc. on the other hand get a chance to shine here.

I've also used it and tested it, and I'd say it's pretty good. It's free, but it has many features like a pro subscription. But regarding Malwarebytes, I'm leaning towards Kaspersky, as it can scan the system and framework as well. However, when you want to update it, you have to sideload it, not install it within the app.

i do that and i'm not having any issues - other than that Bitdefender takes up a lot of memory. also, Malwarebytes Browser Guard can be a bit aggressive, meaning it can block websites even though they're not malicious. if you get annoyed by that, you could use Firefox + uBlock Origin + Bitdefender TrafficLight. also, Bitdefender has its own internet protection module. it's also recommended you use second opinion scanners from time to time, like ESET Online Scanner or Emsisoft Emergency Kit. if you're outside the US, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool is also a great option.

I personally have never used an AV other than Defender. If you do gaming, Kaspersky is good. Yeah, it can have really good live monitoring and will catch infostealers. Just don't download suspicious files or unzip any unknown file; you should be good to go with Kaspersky. Also, before running any .exe or unzipping a file, try uploading it to VirusTotal. It has like 70 of the best AVs in the world. Though if it has 1-3 false flags, it's fine as long as AVs like BitDefender, Kaspersky, Defender, and Avast are saying it's safe.

That actually sounds totally normal for many AVs depending on the type of mod. Does it contain DLL files or is it self installing? VIRUS! Is it a BepinEx mod? VIRUS! Has it recently been updated and is new? VIRUS! Are you downloading it from a "suspicious" website (which can include NexusMods)? VIRUS! this is their business model. They sell you cheap plans upfront and than charge too much on renewals and again charge you for useless addons like Driver updater, optimizer etc. Its all bs. McAfee is worse for malicious marketing as well. Get rid of it at the earliest. Request refund if they give you. If not cancel auto renewals immediately. Next time onwards get a good AV like Bitdefender if in US and Kaspersky if outside US. And purchase keys from Amazon or newegg. Those are much cheaper and you can avoid subscirption this way.

Spybot is an obsolete product! In the early 2000s, it was used to clear spyware and simple malwares like a Trojan. Modern malwares are architectural different and were designed to easily bypass older detection methods. It's slow because it relies on outdated databases and isn't optimized for modern systems. Most of the scanner these days use cloud intelligence and behavioural analysis which are faster and more accurate! MB, EMSI, Norton Power Eraser, KVRT, Sophos Scan and Clean are better than Spybot!

Windows Defender is still okay as a replacement, DefenderUI makes it better too. Add an ad blocker and it’s pretty good to start a new free computer protection. BitDefender TrafficLight extension for your browser is a great touch too. BitDefender/Kaspersky/ESET are better if you are ready to spend money into another AV.
