r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton? Norton is a bloated mess and really doesn't do anything better than windows defender other than its far more resource intensive and annoying with all the damn popups and ads, I personally would recommend eset over Norton as its far less annoying far lighter on the system and far more effective.
r/antivirus · McAfee - is it being dramatic? Mcafee is absolute dogshite for an AV, it's worse than built in windows defender and imo it's paid for malware with all the popups, ads and crap it throws in your face to try and get more money out of you, it's also a horrible resource hog. If you want a 3rd party av I'd recommend eset or Bitdefender.

r/antivirus · Eset or Sophos which one is the better Eset is better than Sophos, Kaspersky is better than both. Kaspersky may be a privately owned Russian company, that however doesn’t make it a bad product and without turning the post political any negative bias towards the company or product is either driven by misinformed opinion and hate.

r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best? you can sugarcoat it and defend WD however you want. i'm not the only one saying that WD is garbage. why do you think parents often rather use third party AVs such as eset, bitdefender or malwarebytes (premium)? they too provide cases where WD failed.

r/antivirus · Bitdefender CPU usage Today's PC's have gigabyte's of RAM, 600 - 800 MB is nothing, and it's barely using your CPU. Bitdefender has a wider feature set than Norton, so I'm not surprised it uses a bit more resources. Norton is garbage, I'd use Windows Defender before I turned my security over to Norton, and Defender is not great. Bitdefender is one of the best antivirus's out there, it's a step above ESET.

r/antivirus · Eset vs Sophos vs Emsisoft tbh you can't go wrong with any of those three, just depends on what annoys you the least. the kaspersky debate is endless. totally get why you want to jump ship just so you don't have to think about it anymore. if you want something that just shuts up and does its job without eating your ram, go ESET. it's been the reddit darling for years for a reason. Emsisoft is also super solid if privacy is your absolute #1 concern right now. their behavior blocker is legit and they are very transparent. Sophos is decent but just a heads up, the home version is managed via a web portal. some people love doing it from a browser, but others absolutely hate not having a normal local desktop UI. FWIW, another really lightweight option you might want to look at is MalwareFox. it completely takes over as your primary AV and is super aggressive on adware and zero-day junk without bottlenecking your system like the heavier suites do. good luck man, anything is better than stressing over your AV.
r/antivirus · Eset vs Sophos vs Emsisoft if pure aggressive protection is the goal, I'd still toss MalwareFox into the ring. it has a robust tech and personally tested against ransomware and trojan samples to be specific gun to my head for just those three you mentioned though? probably ESET for the best balance of protection, impact, etc.
r/antivirus · Eset vs Sophos vs Emsisoft just a standard disclaimer up front: ymmv. this is strictly my personal mileage and based on what i've experienced over the years. your exact hardware and the weird niche apps you run will definitely change how these feel. Malware detection: Kaspersky > ESET > Emsisoft > Sophos False positives (least to most annoying): ESET > Kaspersky > Sophos > Emsisoft System impact (lightest to heaviest): ESET > Emsisoft > Kaspersky > Sophos Privacy (most transparent to least): Emsisoft > ESET > Sophos > Kaspersky

r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. Thanks - but this should never be enabled by default.
r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. I was seeing the ads without having changed any setting in years.
r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. As I said - I haven't changed any settings since I can remember. You're obviously habituated to this kind of thing. Why people like you feel the need to apologise for abusive behaviour by corporations is beyond me. Some kind of capitalistic Stockholm syndrome? You will come to regret this attitude as corporations become more and more abusive. Everything will become a subscription. Everything will advertise to you. Everybody has a line - and one day yours will be crossed. Good luck.
r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. I'm paying ESET for a security product. Not to be marketed to. They can market their products via the normal channels. Not unbidden on my desktop when I have already paid them. I haven't changed a setting in years - and suddenly in the past few days - unwanted ads on boot which I have to dismiss manually. I'm so disappointed as ESET seemed to be one of the few companies around who wouldn't stoop to such behaviour. I can't believe you're trying to justify unwanted intrusive advertising from a paid-for product. People seem to be becoming habituated to this sort of behaviour which is very sad as little by little all our consumer rights and sane expectations of decent treatment are being eroded.

r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. I've been using Nod32 at home and at work for more than 10 years. It absolutely saved my ass when a ransomeware virus storm ran through the office locking down almost every computer and server we have. Almost. I keep eSet on my desktop because I like it and I thought the other product had some weaknesses. Because I do nightly backups of the server to my computer I was able to recover in just a couple hours. For that kind of protection I can click the "Don't advertise to me" block when it comes up. For the record, I just checked and had the slider set to Enabled but haven't seen an ad in longer than I can remember. Also, I can get multipacks from Newegg at a very good price. Second also. There was a glitch when registering the activation code from Newegg on a 10 pack. eSet Customer Support responded to an email within an hour and had the problem resolved a few hours later. So, yeah, I'm a fan.

r/antivirus · Is it worth switching from Windows Defender to a paid antivirus in 2026, or has Defender caught up? Defender is basic and will not catch the latest viruses or malware as it relies on constant updates after the event when a new strain is identified. Both viruses and malware are becoming far more sophisticated and with the advent of AI driven malware Defender just does not cut it. You really need to consider a solution that protects more of the risks including banking, phishing, ransomware etc. I can highly recommend the Eset products as its light weight and uses a live grid function to ensure that emerging threats are identified and rolled out to systems very quickly.

r/antivirus · Is it worth switching from Windows Defender to a paid antivirus in 2026, or has Defender caught up? Windows defender has its issues with handling less known malware (that signatures and first scan won't pick up) and sophisticated info stealers. It depends on what you mean by not the most trustworthy source and what you download exactly. Adult entertainment f.e isn't a major problem as this is mostly movie files or images. .exe application is where things can get a bit sketchy. In terms of signatures and basic real time protection defender is market standard. Which is really good remind you, but the behavioral protection has its flaws. Defender choose functionality over a max security approach. When you start a file windows defender analysis in real time and often terminates malware pretty late in the execution chain, there are cases such as certain infostealers where this is too late. But unless you "find exotic ways to get paid software" and other high risk activities, you can stick to defender. It's a very solid product. If not, I would recommend Bitdefender for the max security approach or ESET as the best performance vs security deal.

r/antivirus · AV Comparatives Performance Winner- McAfee Yeah these results are strange, especially Eset falling behind Kaspersky in the 2 latest performance tests and in this test, McAfee surpassing them both
r/antivirus · Surfshark VPN and Antivirus worth it 2026? I would say surfshark is a little better than most mainstream VPNs (NordVPN, Cyberghost...) but there are still better alternatives, I'm thinking of ProtonVPN which is good in every aspect (But not the BEST in every aspect) in my opinion and is 5€ a month (even less if you take it annually) and MullvadVPN which is great for privacy and anonymity (**A VPN alone won't provide anonymity and privacy if your setup and apps aren't following**) but less good for streaming, there isn't any subscription but you can buy time, 5€ for 30 days, 15€ for 90... and funnily enough you can pay in cash. I recommend taking a standalone antivirus, my go-to are Kaspersky and Eset
r/antivirus · AV Comparatives Performance Winner- McAfee Bitdefender is still heavier than both, I tried the 3 of them. And for me Kaspersky and Eset are as light as eachother

r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best? I'm not defending or "sugarcoating" Defender. I'm asking for evidence. You said Malwarebytes found two viruses that Defender missed. What were the detection names? Were the files actually confirmed to be malicious? That's pretty important before concluding Defender failed. And yes, Malwarebytes, ESET, Bitdefender, etc. can catch something Defender misses. Defender can also catch something another AV misses. No antivirus has a 100% detection rate. Other people saying "Defender is garbage" isn't evidence either. Show what Malwarebytes actually detected in your case and then we have something meaningful to compare.

r/eset · has ESET Small Business Security included this: ESET NOD32 Antivirus? Yes you can, but ESET NOD32 Antivirus has less module/function than ESET Small Business Security product. Also you can use ESET Safe Server which is a product for Windows Server 2019 operating system or newer. This scale goes from the less funcionality to the most: NOD32 Antivirus < Internet Security (HOME Security Essential) < Smart Security Premium (HOME Security Premium) < HOME Security Ultimate < Small Business Security. For example Internet Security has everything that NOD32 Antivirus and Firewall and Safe Banking and browser peotection. Smart Security Premium has everything that Internet Security and Secure data (encryption) and Password Manager. Home Security Ultimate has everything that Smart Security Premium and VPN. It's hard to know the differenceis between the bundle name and the product name. For example ESET HOME Security Essential is the bundle. It can activate the following products: ESET Internet Securtiy for windows, ESET NOD32 Antivirus for windows, ESET Mobile Security for android, ESET Cyber Security for mac. If you need any help, your local ESET support can help in your native language.

r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. A notification you can disable in a couple clicks for the HOME version of a product isn’t abusive. We don’t need to change the meaning of abusive to mean a tiny inconvenience. ESET is more marketed to businesses. I pay for ESET Endpoint Security for my own business. I say this because when you buy the baseline home version, there’s still upgraded products available. What you’re seeing is ESET notifying you that there’s still other features you can purchase if you want, and if you don’t want them you just go and turn off the notification. And don’t get me wrong man, I appreciate your frustration. Would be nice if it came turned off by default, but ask yourself this: How much of an inconvenience is it for you to spend 5 literal seconds to turn it off? Trust me, this isn’t the hill worth dying on.

r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. It's hardly intrusive. A few minor Windows toast notifications about helping you earn extra money and to make sure your devices are protected. You've already been told this was off by default so perhaps you enabled it or opted in by mistake. I've not had any such notifications in any of my machines. I think your wildly overreacting personally.
r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. You can just disable the marketing messages. This is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater to be honest.
r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. Not sure what you mean, but ESET is antimalware, it doesn't block advertising unless it's maligned, or considered PUA/PUS with more aggressive adware components. Have you considered an ad-blocker or popup blocker?
r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. As far as I am aware it can be enabled regionally, but as Aryeh said you can disable it. At the end of the day ESET is a business like any other and they need to market their products to make sales and be profitable. Without it, you wouldn't have a product to use. I get the intrusiveness of the ads, but they do allow you to disable them and shouldn't be on by default.
r/eset · ESET NOD32 has turned into malware. Sorry but you wrote "but it wasn\`t ben spamming with their advertisement to" which makes no sense. Now I understand. OP referenced 'refer your friends' and 'check your devices are protected' notifications which to be honest are not aggressive. Refer a friend can earn you money, and check devices are protected ensures that all your devices are covered. Hardly aggressive tactics is it? Plus, this is a moot topic anyway, as the messages can be disabled.

I just need to get a is that could block me from suspicious downloads, phishing emails and phishing sites. Ofc I would like to remove those websites what asks you to allow notifs to play the video, or something else. I heard eset is good in it, since I'm a cheap I only allow free items (if temu antivirus then temu antivirusn🥰). I heard that Avast is giving out free VPN, 5GB but fast. r/antivirus · Bitdefender or ESET? Bitdefender is somewhat good if you don't care about security and want something that kinda "works" out of the box. Beware that the anti crypto module doesn't seem to work (it didn't catch a crypto-miner I had), the firewall is imo very lenient by default (needs hardening imo). I wasn't impressed with it when I tested it (I no longer use it), but it seems that many people are happy with it, so ymmv. Eset is very good, but it needs tweaking (in my opinion the default settings are not hardened enough), and the fact that the firewall don't enforces by default the full path for signed path is infuriating. Still, easy recommandation.

If you still want to use the free software with the build-in Windows Defender, you can add 'DefenderUI' from Microsoft Store on your computer or from online. You need to go through all the Security settings in Windows Defender and DefenderUI. You can use the 'Full Scan' from them two, as well as that using the MRT - Malicious Software Removal Tool via pressing the Windows Key & R. Also, use ESET Online free scanner, again ensure all the settings are 'ON' & use 'custom' scan, tick-in the empty boxes, this scan is long and throughout. For more information's can be found online. Other than that, the 'Key Scrambler Premium' - is a worthy paid software. The browser extensions for blocking ads is worth looking at too.

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360? I really like ESET if you get it with liveguard which is their cloud sandboxing that automatically scans new files for zero day threats and because you can customize things so much. There’s literally hundreds of options to dig through. I have it so every outbound connection requires approval or rules for future auto approvals, so nothing is talking to any remote server unless I approve it. ESET provides the program, location on the computer and the ip connection and reputation scores for all outbound and inbound connections. If in doubt I ask an LLM if the connection looks normal. You get a real appreciation for how many programs are constantly chattering out to the web and dropping temporary update exe files that get deleted without you even knowing they were there. Probably beyond what most users are willing to put up with but I like it. I’d say ESET is really good at prevention while Malware bytes is often used to clean up malware, but maybe that’s unfair to say. I think you have to really get under the hood and be willing to tinker with ESET to get all the benefits though. Also while liveguard is their standout feature it isn’t cheap and only comes in their premium subscription. I think it’s $60 per year typically. r/antivirus · AV Comparatives Performance Winner- McAfee eset performance lead over bitdefender and kaspersky is no longer true. It was true only couple of years back. Saying from experience on running each of them on several VMs and real world systems.

r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software Norton was the first antivirus I ever used! I was the family systems administrator at seven years old and the first executive decision I ever made was replacing Norton with Zone Alarm. That was 2004 or something times have changed a lot and this stuff is harder and a lot of ways that most companies haven’t kept up with. That means you should be looking for the antivirus with the team who is doing the most research in the field impacting consumers and generally speaking that has always been ESET. This antivirus is so good that threat actors at one point used it as an oracle for how undetectable their malware was. That’s a unique competitive edge that you can’t buy with marketing. I’d buy antivirus the same way I’d buy socks: which ones will last the longest without a hole punching through the bottom? And that’s why I buy $25 socks from Vermont。

r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software No, unless they've significantly improved, Norton and Symantec have such a horrible reputation that I would consider it to be malware. For windows systems, I'd recommend using Microsoft Defender, Crowdstrike Falcon, or maybe Eset Nod32 (haven't used last one in a while).

r/eset · Eset nod32 issue with Windows Feature updates? What release notes where? Also, the agents I asked were quite specific that disabling was not enough. It was necessary to uninstall and then reinstall. Does Windows actually suggest disabling antivirus? My experience is that they just do the update at night when you aren't around and then have you restart when you get in in the morning. If they thought it was important, why don't they recommend it before updating? If it is Eset that has release notes recommending disabling before updates, I'd appreciate a link. Thank you.

r/antivirus · How reliable are eset NOD32 and avg? No files were downloaded, nothing seemed to be executed when checking the current proceses, didn’t run anything so the trojan side should be fine. Don’t know how to check if it could have been a ClickFix but i suppose that should pop up on Eset and AVG no?

r/antivirus · Sophos or Webroot or Eset Which one is the best I have access to macOS malware samples (\~50+). Webroot is not trash and detects about the same number of macOS samples as does ESET. Perhaps, Webroot is trash for Windows malware, but for macOS, it's hard to find an AV that far excels. OTOH, Malwarebytes for macOS is sorely lacking in detection.

r/antivirus · Sophos or Webroot or Eset Which one is the best I would go with eset moved over from McAfee pretty happy with it so far it offers some nice features. And doesn’t appear to be too resource intensive when it’s running scans

r/antivirus · Is Surfshark Antivirus Worth Installing if I Already Have Windows Defender? Didn't even know that "Surfshark Antivirus” was a thing till now honestly… Windows defender is usually quite good for a basic use of the PC. For something a bit more sturdy, i'd say Eset (even Nod32, the base product, works quite well really) or Bitdefender, to name a few.

r/antivirus · Is Surfshark Antivirus Worth Installing if I Already Have Windows Defender? I would not recommend either. I would use ESET, Kaspersky, Bitdefender, F-Secure, Trend Micro.
r/antivirus · Sophos Home Avast Security Premium ComboCleaner Or Comodo Antivirus The only one I would use of these would be Sophos, don't bother with the others. That being said, ESET or Bitdefender are better.
r/antivirus · Norton McAfee TrendMicro Or Sophos Home Of these 4 Sophos would be the best, followed by TrendMicro. Stay away from Norton and McAfee. But I consider ESET or Bitdefender to be better than all of these.
r/antivirus · Sophos showing strange information They are both good, go with whatever you prefer
r/antivirus · Sophos showing strange information ESET and Kaspersky work the same way in my experience. They won't tell you with a popup if an app is low reputation, you have to look for it manually. That is so it won't bother the user too much. They won't tell you unless it actually blocks something malicious.

r/antivirus · What in the world is happening with my F-Secure ? Sorrow to hear that F-Secure has taken this turn, yep. Hope it will get a little better (at least for you) in the next updates, although I doubt they’re going this way with the Avira core. Windows Defender is still okay as a replacement, DefenderUI makes it better too. Add an ad blocker and it’s pretty good to start a new free computer protection. BitDefender TrafficLight extension for your browser is a great touch too. BitDefender/Kaspersky/ESET are better if you are ready to spend money into another AV. Although you may not like BitDefender as much as Kaspersky and ESET since it’s a bit heavy.

r/antivirus · Sophos Home Avast Security Premium ComboCleaner Or Comodo Antivirus The best AV IMO is Kaspersky and Bitdefender. a third option would be Eset. But if i have to choose of one those. i d choose Sophos. Comodo is only good as a firewall. Best regards

r/antivirus · Best overall (FREE) Internet security and AV. There may be many choices but there's no comparison to paid protection. Free AV does protect you but in a limited way. Therefore, it is crucial you purchase a security product like Eset which offers top notch protection with great ease in terms of usability

Hello, Open the UI, press the **F5** key to open *Advanced setup* then go to *User interface → Notifications → Interactive alerts*, go to *In-product messaging* and make sure *Display marketing messages* is set to "Disabled". Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
Hello, Reddit is not an official support venue for ESET (yet), and the folks who volunteer their time here tend to be the ones in technical roles, not marketing or PR. Reaching out to the latter via Facebook or Twitter (X) is the way to reach those people. Or write a letter to the CEO and mail it to Slovakia, if you want. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
Hello, While I haven't personally experienced any trouble myself either upgrading to a new version of Windows (e.g., Win 10 → Win 11) or performing a version upgrade (e.g., 24H2 → 25H2) with ESET's software installed, there's always the possibility with any security software with it interfering with the updating/upgrading process. If there are issues, they could be related to how the software was configured, because if it were widespread the subreddit (and ESET's own support forum, tech support phone lines, etc.) would be swamped with messages about it. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
Hello, Your settings should not be getting changed randomly after an update. Do you have ticket numbers from your reports that you can share? Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
Hello, As far as I know it is not toggled on as a default option. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
