r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software

For home users the honest answer is that Norton and its family of products are rarely worth the cost in 2026. Windows Defender has closed the gap significantly and for most personal use cases performs comparably to paid consumer antivirus in independent lab tests. The specific issue with Norton and the brands you mentioned, Avast, AVG, Avira, all now under Gen Digital, is that their business model has shifted heavily toward upselling VPNs, identity monitoring, password managers, and other subscription add-ons. The core antivirus is often the loss leader. Avast in particular had a significant scandal in 2020 where their subsidiary was caught selling user browsing data to third parties including major corporations, which is a difficult thing to overlook for a security product whose entire value proposition is protecting your privacy. For Symantec it depends heavily on whether you are talking about the consumer or enterprise side. The consumer Norton brand was sold off and Symantec rebranded to Broadcom on the enterprise side. Broadcom's Symantec endpoint products are still genuinely competitive in enterprise environments where you need centralised management, policy enforcement, and integration with broader security infrastructure. That is a completely different conversation from the consumer Norton product. The practical recommendation for most home users is Windows Defender plus good habits, a reputable DNS filter like Cloudflare [1.1.1.1](http://1.1.1.1), and a browser extension like uBlock Origin. That combination costs nothing and covers the vast majority of real threats. If you want a paid option Malwarebytes Premium has a cleaner reputation than the Gen Digital family and a more straightforward business model.

r/antivirus · BitDefender or Windows Defender with Malwarebytes extension?

Maybe go with a layered approach Windows Defender + DNS servers from Quad9 to block known bad sites. Or use something more customizable like a free OpenDNS account using their DNS servers. Or host your own DNS servers like Pi-Hole or Technitium on Raspberry Pi devices or similar + An ad-blocker in your browser(s) Keep Malwarebytes free installed but not running all the time in the background for the occasional scan if you think you might have gotten hit with something that Windows Defender didn't catch. Windows Defender also has an "Offline Scan" that does a fair job Great protection that is lite on resources

    r/antivirus · Should I install McAfee??

Oh god please no. There are way better anti virus software like Bitdefender, Malwarebytes, and hell even the built in Windows Defender works pretty well. McAfee is also basically bloatware that is hard to remove once you quit using it and also slows your system down a ton (took me like 1 or 2 hours to remove McAfee cause it took space and slowed my computer down a ton)

    r/antivirus · PANDA ANTIVIRUS

Panda is BAD!, discard it, I recommend Eset, Kaspersky, Bitdefender or Malwarebytes (the latter is not the best of the 3 mentioned but it is not that bad)

r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free

r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best?

I'm not defending or "sugarcoating" Defender. I'm asking for evidence. You said Malwarebytes found two viruses that Defender missed. What were the detection names? Were the files actually confirmed to be malicious? That's pretty important before concluding Defender failed. And yes, Malwarebytes, ESET, Bitdefender, etc. can catch something Defender misses. Defender can also catch something another AV misses. No antivirus has a 100% detection rate. Other people saying "Defender is garbage" isn't evidence either. Show what Malwarebytes actually detected in your case and then we have something meaningful to compare.

    Nettoyage malware
r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best?

This really isn't proof that Windows Defender is bad. Malwarebytes detecting two files doesn't automatically mean Defender missed two actual viruses. Different antivirus programs use different detection methods, and false positives happen. The weird behavior in the game doesn't prove malware was responsible either. It could have been a bug, corrupted files, or even part of the game. The important information is missing: What exactly did Malwarebytes detect? Without the detection names, file hashes, or something like VirusTotal results, we don't even know whether those two files were actually malicious. Defender can miss malware, every antivirus can, but one program flagging something another didn't isn't evidence that Defender is no good.

Hi, are toy using the free version of Bitdefender? How much ram does it use while doing simple tasks (eg browsing)? I have Microsoft Defender + Malwarebytes extension on browser and it just does the job for me, however I do very ordinary stuff on my pc. I've been thinking to switch to Bitdefender free as some claim that it's overall a better choice, but I wouldn't want it to hog all the ram (I have 16GB).

I’ve ran Kaspersky Premium for 1 year then moved to ESET Premium for 2 years. Tried Sophos Home followed by Malwarebytes Premium afterwards. Both were alright but not impressed. Swapped to Bitdefender and I’m really loving it by far. Sticking with Bitdefender for the long term but it’s a coin flip for me between it and Kaspersky.

    r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Free + Windows Defender = BSOD?

Yeah of course. But I should point out, malwarebytes free doesn’t offer realtime protection last I checked. If this is the case, then contrary to what the other comments say, Windows Defender will remain active. If it does actually offer realtime protection though, I’d honestly recommend turning it off regardless. Malwarebytes is only good as an on-demand scanner for files.

r/antivirus · Is it worth switching from Windows Defender to a paid antivirus in 2026, or has Defender caught up?

IMHO stick with defender. I have used defender for 10+ years. Also using maleware bytes for maybe even longer, at least since it was the go to malaria program, how ever long ago that was. Not a single virus had gotten on my computer. I also recommend that combo to all the family and friends I have built computers for. It works. The problem can always be traced back to human failure. Clicking a link or installing some off the wall program that is packaged with questionable bloat.

I've also used it and tested it, and I'd say it's pretty good. It's free, but it has many features like a pro subscription. But regarding Malwarebytes, I'm leaning towards Kaspersky, as it can scan the system and framework as well. However, when you want to update it, you have to sideload it, not install it within the app.

    r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Detection

**Of course I'm not 100% sure but I think it's this:** Malwarebytes isn't actually finding real viruses, infected files, or bad extensions on your PC. It's just scanning Chrome's internal configuration files inside AppData, like the Preferences or Sync Data files. When you browse the web and Chrome automatically blocks a sketchy site from asking for notification permissions, it saves that URL into an internal "blocked" list. Malwarebytes reads these text files, spots those spam domains, and flags them as PUP.Optional.PushNotifications.Generic, even though Chrome has already blocked them and they are completely harmless. But again, I'm not 100% sure.

i do that and i'm not having any issues - other than that Bitdefender takes up a lot of memory. also, Malwarebytes Browser Guard can be a bit aggressive, meaning it can block websites even though they're not malicious. if you get annoyed by that, you could use Firefox + uBlock Origin + Bitdefender TrafficLight. also, Bitdefender has its own internet protection module. it's also recommended you use second opinion scanners from time to time, like ESET Online Scanner or Emsisoft Emergency Kit. if you're outside the US, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool is also a great option.

r/antivirus · Uninstalling Malwarebytes completely, reverting settings?

You're not imagining it. The current Malwarebytes app does a lot more than the old on-demand scanner did, so it can feel pretty aggressive when all you wanted was a second-opinion scan. For the cleanest removal, MBST is the right tool. Download the Support Tool directly from Malwarebytes, open Advanced, choose Clean, let it restart the PC, and decline the offer to reinstall Malwarebytes afterward. Do not choose Repair, since that removes and reinstalls the app while preserving its configuration. A few things are worth checking separately: 1. Browser Guard is a separate browser extension. Check the extensions page in every browser and remove it manually if it is still there. 2. Look in Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps for a separate Malwarebytes VPN or Privacy entry. If one exists, uninstall that too. Then check Settings > Network & internet > VPN for any leftover Malwarebytes connection. 3. Malwarebytes Firewall Control is not actually a replacement firewall. It manages the built-in Windows Defender Firewall. After removal, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection and make sure the Domain, Private and Public profiles are enabled. I would not blindly use "Restore firewalls to default" unless something is actually broken, because that also deletes legitimate custom rules you created yourself. 4. If you enabled anything under Malwarebytes System Tweaks, try to undo those settings before uninstalling. Those options change Windows itself, so no uninstaller can reliably know whether a setting was changed by Malwarebytes or was already configured that way by you. Finally, check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection after the reboot. Make sure Microsoft Defender Antivirus is shown as the active provider and that real-time protection, cloud-delivered protection and tamper protection are on. If Defender does not reactivate immediately, reboot once more and install pending Windows updates. There is no reason to reinstall Windows or start manually deleting registry keys when the PC is otherwise working normally. Run the official Clean procedure, verify the few items above, and you should be fine.

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

Hello, Each of the vendors you asked about offers a trial version, so… try each one, and see which one works best on your computer for your use. Most antivirus programs have a negligible impact on performance these days, even on games. In terms of using something free versus buying something, most commercial antivirus programs have trial versions that you can install and see if they meet your needs. Whether or not a program is free or has a subscription has no impact on its performance or efficacy. You could install something that is free and it works well on your system and provides a high level of protection, or pay a lot of money for an antivirus program which doesn't. As far as actual antivirus/antimalware/internet security/security suite/endpoint protection (etc. etc. etc.) programs go, there is no one "best" program, as each has its plusses and minuses. Performance, system resource usage, and detection rates change with every update, and those occur multiple times throughout the day. So, any of the programs listed in the wiki at https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_anti-virus_.28aka_anti-malware.29_developers would be a good starting place to find what is **best for you**. It also lists the countries each developer is headquartered in. Start by searching the *OS Support?* to find out which developers make security software for your device's operating system. * If you are looking for a **free** program, check out the ones with a check mark ("✔️") in the *Free Version?* column. * If you are looking for a **paid** program, check out the ones with a check mark ("✔️") in the *Paid Version?* column. Once you have an idea of which program(s) seem to best meet your needs, you can check the [Understanding Antivirus Software Tests and Testers](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_understanding_antivirus_software_tests_and_testers) section of the wiki for a list of reputable independent testing organizations and see what they have to say about your selection(s). Detection rates are one metric, but be sure to also look at performance, reliability, stability, level of customer service and tech support provided, and, if course, cost. Also be sure to check out the [Free Tools](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_web_browser_ad_blocking_tools) section of the wiki for programs you can use to provide additional security to your web browser and the [Securing your Computer](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_securing_your_computer) as well for additional free tips on protecting your computer. r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

Honestly, your best defense against viruses and malware is using good internet practices. Being able to identify risks is way more important than antivirus. I run free malwarebytes about once every 3 or 4 months as confirmation, but I haven't had a virus since the days of kazaa and bearshare. I'm not saying don't get an antivirus, but there's no guarantee a metamorphic virus will be picked up by any antivirus anyway. If you are the kind of person that likes to dabble in programs that are from questionable sources or no information about the sources, spend some time learning about virtual machines and first run the questionable software on a virtual machine. Chances of something escaping a virtual machine and infecting your actual system is very low, and if it's sophisticated enough to do that, these antivirus programs probably aren't going to detect it anyway. This is the same advice I give all the employees at my job as well, minus the VM. Even with antivirus, be skeptical and be safe.

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

I really like ESET if you get it with liveguard which is their cloud sandboxing that automatically scans new files for zero day threats and because you can customize things so much. There’s literally hundreds of options to dig through. I have it so every outbound connection requires approval or rules for future auto approvals, so nothing is talking to any remote server unless I approve it. ESET provides the program, location on the computer and the ip connection and reputation scores for all outbound and inbound connections. If in doubt I ask an LLM if the connection looks normal. You get a real appreciation for how many programs are constantly chattering out to the web and dropping temporary update exe files that get deleted without you even knowing they were there. Probably beyond what most users are willing to put up with but I like it. I’d say ESET is really good at prevention while Malware bytes is often used to clean up malware, but maybe that’s unfair to say. I think you have to really get under the hood and be willing to tinker with ESET to get all the benefits though. Also while liveguard is their standout feature it isn’t cheap and only comes in their premium subscription. I think it’s $60 per year typically. If you want to stay cheap I’ve heard good things about Bitdefender but never used it myself. I

I highly recommend BitDefender + MalwareBytes (free). Only ~$70/ year and has the top rated detection rates of any AV software. I think it stopped 100% of zero days in their tests. Throw that in with Windows Smart Apps and proper firewall configuration and you're solid. Social engineering is the most common way to get compromised, but this setup will save you if you make a mistake and open an email attachment or click to a website you shouldn't have. I personally don't trust Windows which to rely solely on them.

Spybot is an obsolete product! In the early 2000s, it was used to clear spyware and simple malwares like a Trojan. Modern malwares are architectural different and were designed to easily bypass older detection methods. It's slow because it relies on outdated databases and isn't optimized for modern systems. Most of the scanner these days use cloud intelligence and behavioural analysis which are faster and more accurate! MB, EMSI, Norton Power Eraser, KVRT, Sophos Scan and Clean are better than Spybot!

r/antivirus · TotalAV Antivirus tells me to renew a subscription I never bought.

TotalAV is known to use deceptive advertisements in order to fool users into downloading their dogshit software. They focus on redirecting users to their websites, they also use fake review websites & pay people in order to make their software seem trustworthy. I actually posted about them on my website in 2020: [https://scammer.info/t/totalav-is-a-scam-spam-misleading-av-company/62445](https://scammer.info/t/totalav-is-a-scam-spam-misleading-av-company/62445) Can you tell me where you are getting this popup? Is it from your browser, or just appearing as a separate window? I would recommend [AdwCleaner](https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner) to start with.

r/antivirus · Is panda dome reliable?

It's meh, I really wouldn't use Panda as my main security solution because of its poor detection rate. I'd rather use Defender or pay for Malwarebytes.

r/antivirus · Best overall (FREE) Internet security and AV.

Go "layered" protection Free built-in Windows Defender + Free OpenDNS account using their DNS servers in your network configuration(s) or use something like Quad9 + Free Ad-Blocker in your browser(s) like Ublock Origin = Great Free protection that is light on resources That's what I have been doing for years without infection I'll use Malware-Bytes to run scans every once in awhile .. but usually just do a Windows Defender offline scan. I never find any malicious anything on the 4 Windows setups that are running in my home

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes or Bitdefender? Which to keep.

Generally not a good idea having two real-time antivirus systems running on one computer. It will introduce a heavy computer load, and two AVs can potentially interact with one another. An AV has no idea what the other is, simply that it's software with full admin privileges. A better way to strengthen Windows Defender is DefenderUI a free GUI tool providing direct access to Defender's more in depth protective layers, and the ability to save them as a preset. For browser protection, if you're not using the Edge browser, add **either** Bitdefender Traffic Light, **or** Malwarebytes Browser Guard browser extension (not both). Either offer strong phishing and malicious website detection. They won't clash or interfere with Defender. For an effective second-opinion scanner, look at Emsisoft Emergency Kit. Free and portable with strong detection. It uses two signature databases, its own, and Bitdefender's.

r/antivirus · Unsafe site or is AVG mistaken?

I wouldn't trust avg as far as I can spit, same goes for mccaffee and anything like that false positives are pretty common, my advice for antiviruses is to just either windows defender or malwarebytes so long as you can spot fake links you're good

r/antivirus · How do people pick an antivirus without overthinking it?

Any additional AV just eats resources. Practise safe computing, avoid malicious emails and web links and files you do not trust. If you dont know if a software is safe research it, or ask on reddit for one that others have found save. Besides malwarebytes i dont run any other tools to secure my users. Defender does a great job when setup correctly and not using the default settings. Malwarebytes just adds that one extra scan for me should a user want to import photos from a usb. Again, stick to practicing safe computing. You avoid potholes and nails when driving, do the same when working with computers. Or go to linux....

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

Which one? None. IMO, MalwareBytes is still not an actual antivirus, and hasn't found me anything for years and years. Norton's catch-rate is fine but if Norton breaks it will take your PC down with it. Trash. (Shame. Used to be the gold standard.) Bitdefender is fine, I guess, and less prone to bricking Windows, but still unnecessary. I use: Windows Defender as the only active protection, plus SUPERAntiSpyware Free (manual updates, manual scans,) plus Spyware Blaster (passive blacklist,) plus Ghostery in my browsers (blocks ads and general chicanery.)
