I've just seen that the first notification I have marked RuntimeBroker.exe (afaik a normal Windows process) as a Gen:Trojan.Predator.Marte.1. It seems a very specific name so I may have been (I honestly don't know how) infected, is there anyway I can clean it without a clean install? I'm afraid the answer is no but there's a lot of configuration I currently don't have time to do rn

The solution I ended up with was just uninstalling the entire program, otherwise everything else would stop working. And given that was the problem, I couldn't have run that utility as I needed to download it and I couldn't use the browser. But if it helps anyhow, the antivirus was flagging everything in my computer as Gen:Trojan.Predator.Marte.1, even files located in System32. If you see the entire thread, I wasn't the only one with this exact problem, and running a few other antiviruses tells that everything is clean, so it must be something that Bitdefender messed up.

    r/antivirus · Anti virus McAfee

this is their business model. They sell you cheap plans upfront and than charge too much on renewals and again charge you for useless addons like Driver updater, optimizer etc. Its all bs. McAfee is worse for malicious marketing as well. Get rid of it at the earliest. Request refund if they give you. If not cancel auto renewals immediately. Next time onwards get a good AV like Bitdefender if in US and Kaspersky if outside US. And purchase keys from Amazon or newegg. Those are much cheaper and you can avoid subscirption this way.

r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton?

I question where you saw Norton 360 outperforming Bitdefender, from everything I’ve researched, Bitdefender is the top with tests while Norton *can* let some malware through, and particularly isn’t great about recovering ransomware corrupted files. Part of the reason I jumped from Norton was how it performed compared to others during tests. That may have changed though as that was years ago and maybe they got better. I abandoned Norton because I was not thrilled with their performance for the other services they provided as well. Their password manager was slow and their UI was awful. The VPN slowed everything down, and their utilities program wasn’t doing anything different than SupportAssist. I was also very turned off by their crypto miner “feature” (I believe they abandoned this but was a reason I wanted to leave them) At the time I jumped, the alternatives I went with were cheaper/evened out and I haven’t looked back. Norton might come in a complete package but it’s not all the best, in my opinion. Plus, I did some research into LifeLock, and it’s not all it’s cracked up to be based on user experiences. I don’t *hate* Norton but I think there’s better alternatives.

r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton?

I’m not sure how you are getting the $30/year tbh. Having looked at the Amazon listing, it’s only for new subscribers and the renewal price is somewhere around $100-$120/year. A Bitdefender family plan can get you $70 introductory year and then $140/year covering 25 devices with five separate accounts but it sounds like it’s for your personal use and not like you’re having others use it, so maybe that’s not the route you’re going for. Either way, if you like Norton I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Some of the Amazon reviews might answer why some ppl dislike it though. I didn’t have too many issues beyond performance. Also, according to Bitdefender themselves, Norton scores only slightly lower than them, so hey, I guess they improved their scanning abilities since when I switched. That’s good for their customers at least. Not enough to make me switch, but good on them.

r/antivirus · Can I stop the AVG and Avast apps from opening on startup?

Avast and AVG use the exact same detection engine so not only is it not providing any additional protection, it might actually prevent either of them from properly quarantining malware. Frankly, everything under the Gen Digital umbrella (Norton / Avira / Avast / AVG) have gotten worse and worse with popups and marketing. Window Defender is pretty decent now and built-into the operating system but it lacks network level protectio. If you're worried about him getting tricked by phishing or other online threats, you could check out Bitdefender Free like another person suggested.

r/antivirus · Avast One Free vs. Bitdefender Free

Bitdefender Free is the better choice for Windows 11 because it is extremely lightweight and straightforward, operating without any ads or upselling, whereas Avast One Free frequently displays notifications and upgrade pop-ups. It does not constantly pester you to purchase the premium version. It consumes fewer system resources and does not slow down the computer. It quietly performs its job in the background without any hassle.

Dear Bitdefender, Do the log files you're asking for exist after uninstalling your software? There was simply no way for me to go through the process you requested for generating those logs while I was under fire and my computer was turning into a brick in front of my eyes, with the only thing I could do being a forced shutdown. It took me a long time yesterday to fix this. Normal Windows turned into a brick, so I went into Safe Mode. Of course, over the years Windows has made that complicated: two forced shutdowns, multi-step recovery screens, and entering the BitLocker recovery code, which takes quite a bit of time, every single time. In Safe Mode I checked the system with three tools: sfc /scannow KVRT MSERT All of them came back clean. Then I started uninstalling your software from Safe Mode. Eventually it asked me to restart. It went back into normal Windows. For a moment, everything seemed fine. And then Bitdefender started installing itself again. So, from a clean computer, onto a clean USB drive, I downloaded your special uninstall tool. Twice. And when I tried to run it, I got the following message: "Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation." So I went back to normal Windows. Luckily, the reinstalled Bitdefender hadn't connected to my subscription yet, so it wasn't actually running. I then uninstalled it normally from Windows. Now Windows Defender is running normally, and I ran KVRT once again. Everything looks fine. I'm curious: Is this a classic case of a demanding boss pressuring a programmer to get it done, who then uses AI because they want to go home, and then QA using AI too, and this is what happens? My suggestion: fire the boss, not the programmer. Or... Was this actually the opening shot in a revenge operation by Kaspersky's Russian spies, and should we now prepare ourselves for the Bug Wars? 🪲⚔️🐛🚀

r/antivirus · Looking for McAfee alternatives

I second Bitdefender. I blew up my daily driver windows install a couple weeks ago and for the rebuild was doing a series of experimentations and tried out every free antivirus I could find to compare them for the resource usage versus the built-in. Bitdefender was lighter in every way, and it caught way more stuff. I mean, it’s mostly you know torrenting and F movie clone sites but still. I was impressed with how light it was.

    GratuitLégerWindows
r/antivirus · Looking for McAfee alternatives

I’m normally running WindScribe with paid ControlD for my DNS so rarely do things ever actually come through. But Bitdefender still flagged a bunch of sites and downloads that I wouldn’t have necessarily caught on my own. Most of the downloads were false positives. But importantly, the resource usage was next to nothing. And yeah, since the AI boom, I’ve started to use Windows sandbox for anything remotely sketchy. And for local pipelines cause I’m a DevOps guy. I test every new piece of sketchy software in a sandbox with a bunch of free anti-malware programs i scan it, start it up and watch it during execution, and monitor the communications coming in and out of it with wireshark. If it passes everything, I move just the executable to a shared quarantine directory on another drive. Otherwise I just destroy it. Sure added time to any kind of software install. But if I’m not gonna treat my own home like I would treat a corporation with billions of dollars and secrets, I look at it like I don’t respect myself. If they deserve it, I deserve it.

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender vs Kaspersky?

I’ve used both Kaspersky Premium and am currently using Bitdefender Total Security. Ive also used others and Windows Defender was one of those. Do I think it’s worth paying for an antivirus? Depends on what you download and browse but a good browser such as Brave along with uBlock is enough for most. I am in Canada and could pick between Kaspersky and Bitdefender. To be honest, both are equally the top tier of paid antiviruses. I went with Bitdefender now and I am loving it. You can’t go wrong with either one…

r/antivirus · Does Bitdefender hog your memory or CPU?

I’ve hesitated switching to it for a long time now because of the posts I saw on usage. I’ve had Kaspersky, ESET, Malwarebytes Premium, Sophos Home and now Bitdefender Total Security. I do have an overkill of a desktop (9950X3D / 64GB DDR5) and the RAM usage is roughly 600-700mb. No impact on CPU whatsoever. It stays out of my way and I don’t notice it at all in everyday work, browsing or any gaming. Big fan of Kaspersky and had a great experience with ESET but I am really loving Bitdefender right now and sticking with it at least for the 2 year license I purchased on sale. You can’t go wrong with either Kaspersky or Bitdefender.

    GamingLéger
r/antivirus · Do you think Bitdefender triumphs over other anti viruses?

I’ve ran Kaspersky Premium for 1 year then moved to ESET Premium for 2 years. Tried Sophos Home followed by Malwarebytes Premium afterwards. Both were alright but not impressed. Swapped to Bitdefender and I’m really loving it by far. Sticking with Bitdefender for the long term but it’s a coin flip for me between it and Kaspersky.

r/antivirus · Does Bitdefender hog your memory or CPU?

Yeah but even on a 32gb system, it’s seamless. (At least on my brothers PC) Now having gone with 64gb DDR5 and max usage hitting like 32% - 35% max usage under gaming and browsing, there’s no real world impact when 40% of my ram is taking a nap…

    GamingLéger
r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

I’ve used ESET Premium in the past and liked it. Once it ended, I tried Malwarebytes Premium for the trial and as soon as it ended, I went out and picked up Bitdefender Total Security (2 weeks ago). Love everything about it. 2 years for $39.99 CAD at Bestbuy. Best protection for an unbeatable price. Extremely happy so far.

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender CPU usage

Today's PC's have gigabyte's of RAM, 600 - 800 MB is nothing, and it's barely using your CPU. Bitdefender has a wider feature set than Norton, so I'm not surprised it uses a bit more resources. Norton is garbage, I'd use Windows Defender before I turned my security over to Norton, and Defender is not great. Bitdefender is one of the best antivirus's out there, it's a step above ESET.

    Léger
    r/antivirus · Virus/Malware protection

Yeah remove McAfee and buy Sophos or Bitdefender. Windows Defender has gotten better but it still misses a ton of things. It's tuned to not be intrusive and because of that it misses many things. It's also not great at detecting malicious behavior, which is why it misses many info stealers lately. Those who are hyper aware of what to avoid can probably run with just Windows Defender and a DNS blocker, but if you aren't, it's best to have the best protecting you. I know what to avoid, been a sysadmin for years and recently pivoted to cyber security, I have two Pi-holes on my network, uBlock Origin in Firefox, and yet I have Bitdefender on my gaming PC and Sophos installed on family members computers. Threats have gotten worse and all it takes is one wrong click, or you think you're downloading from the official 7zip website but in reality it's one of the half dozen copy cat sites with trojans.

r/antivirus · My thoughts on Emsisoft, Bitdefender and other AVs, especially for advanced threat protection

As far as bitdefender goes, running a full PC scan as soon as you download it makes a huge difference. Let it cache files first rather than letting it do it over time, this helps performance drastically. I’ve also tested it myself vs windows defender and noticed minimal to no performance loss in games. Some web pages took a second longer to load, but otherwise no other differences. Worth noting that while it appears to utilize more RAM in task manager, most other AVs hide their true RAM utilization anyways. It’s just a byproduct of having a good signature base to run with.

r/antivirus · My thoughts on Emsisoft, Bitdefender and other AVs, especially for advanced threat protection

This makes sense. Good tip! One thing that confuses me though. Bitdefender's ATD hooks syscalls via DLL injection (atcuf64.dll/bdhk64.dll) to detect malicious behavior in real-time. But I've noticed it doesn't inject into most games and some other processes. Since games are often quite vulnerable, why doesn't it protect those? Is there kernel-level monitoring I'm not seeing, or is this just an accepted trade-off for compatibility? I haven't delved that deep yet.

r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free

They are repackaged variants of the same core AV and browser detection engines. Avast One has more features, including an in-built Firewall, and File Shield ransomware folder protection, similar to Controlled Folder access in Windows Security/Defender. Note, both display endless advert and ‘warning’ popups, promoting their premium version. Essentially you pay to switch the adverts off, and add a few nominal features. Windows Security is an effective, set and forget, ad free alternative. If you use a browser other than Edge, install Bitdefender Traffic Light browser extension, giving you excellent protection against phishing and malware sites. Bitdefender AV Free, like Windows Security, is more set and forget, but will display advert popups, though less often than Avast. Very strong browser and malware protection, but a higher background load than Avast. Windows Security is about the lightest load of all.

    GratuitLéger
r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free

The free version gives you control over main protective elements: malware and scan settings, File Shield, and basic firewall. Certain element such as advanced firewall, and more in-depth malware settings, webcam, VPN, and AI, are specific to the premium version, but are adding features, more than any substantial protective upgrade. If you were to look at Bitdefender Free for example, you'd find over 75% of its controls are locked, in the free version.

    Gratuit
r/antivirus · Bitdefender antivirus free with Comodo firewall

It doesn't include its own firewall, but leaves Windows Firewall active. Possibly the easiest firewall upgrade, to use with Bitdefender Free, is [Malwarebytes Firewall Control,](https://www.binisoft.org/wfc) extending operation of Windows in-built firewall, rather than replacing it. Install, set to Medium filtering, enable learning mode, and open each of your applications, during the learning period, to add as an exclusion. Once the required apps have been added, switch to *Display notifications* and it will block unknown connections until authorized by you. Its genuinely free so doesn't itself generate 'upgrade' popups.

    GratuitWindows
r/antivirus · Malwarebytes or Bitdefender? Which to keep.

Generally not a good idea having two real-time antivirus systems running on one computer. It will introduce a heavy computer load, and two AVs can potentially interact with one another. An AV has no idea what the other is, simply that it's software with full admin privileges. A better way to strengthen Windows Defender is DefenderUI a free GUI tool providing direct access to Defender's more in depth protective layers, and the ability to save them as a preset. For browser protection, if you're not using the Edge browser, add **either** Bitdefender Traffic Light, **or** Malwarebytes Browser Guard browser extension (not both). Either offer strong phishing and malicious website detection. They won't clash or interfere with Defender. For an effective second-opinion scanner, look at Emsisoft Emergency Kit. Free and portable with strong detection. It uses two signature databases, its own, and Bitdefender's.

r/antivirus · Is it worth switching from Windows Defender to a paid antivirus in 2026, or has Defender caught up?

Windows defender has its issues with handling less known malware (that signatures and first scan won't pick up) and sophisticated info stealers. It depends on what you mean by not the most trustworthy source and what you download exactly. Adult entertainment f.e isn't a major problem as this is mostly movie files or images. .exe application is where things can get a bit sketchy. In terms of signatures and basic real time protection defender is market standard. Which is really good remind you, but the behavioral protection has its flaws. Defender choose functionality over a max security approach. When you start a file windows defender analysis in real time and often terminates malware pretty late in the execution chain, there are cases such as certain infostealers where this is too late. But unless you "find exotic ways to get paid software" and other high risk activities, you can stick to defender. It's a very solid product. If not, I would recommend Bitdefender for the max security approach or ESET as the best performance vs security deal.

Panda is BAD!, discard it, I recommend Eset, Kaspersky, Bitdefender or Malwarebytes (the latter is not the best of the 3 mentioned but it is not that bad)

r/antivirus · AVG Free vs Avast One Free

r/antivirus · Which is better: Bitdefender free or Microsoft Defender?

The vast majority of malware if not all are going to be designed to bypass Microsoft Defender. Defender is good if stumble upon something well known and old but if it's new, Defender ain't going to be defending anything! Bitdefender is a bit overzealous and aggressive and has a lot of false positives but it's pretty much your only option if you're in the states given Kaspersky is outlawed.

r/antivirus · How do people pick an antivirus without overthinking it?

Years ago the AV programs were a necessity as Microsoft did nothing to protect you and the AV companies were all fighting to claim the best AV program. Since that time much has changed and AV programs now have added functionality like VPN, Identity protection, driver version monitoring, etc. in an attempt to attract and keep clients but the reality is that most people don't need or want this added functionality and it just bloat. In the mean time Microsoft Defender has enhanced their ability and is now considered among the top AV programs out there and it's built into Windows and it's free and for most people it's adequate for their needs. Now, if you want the absolute BEST AV program out there without the bloatware get **Bitdefender Antivirus Plus**

[Send our team ](https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/)more details about what is being detected or flagged, and we’ll get back to you with a recommended solution.

r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton?

Sorry this has happened to you. Yes, our security solution is capable of blocking both the malware-serving URL and the actual application before installing. [This article covers more about what a trojan is and how to stay safe. ](https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/15252/)[And the steps here will help with malware removal from an infected system. ](https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/2127/)

r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best?

Hi, thank you for considering Bitdefender to ensure the security of your devices. Here are a few key points to your questions: • No security solution has zero system impact, and results will always vary depending on the daily activities performed on the system. Since it will be for a new laptop, we’d recommend trying it on the actual device and seeing how it behaves with your friend’s daily workload. • Bitdefender uses a technique called Advanced Threat Defense, that continuously monitors running processes for suspicious behavior and uses heuristic analysis to detect new and zero-day threats. On Windows, it also includes a firewall that monitors unauthorized connections. • When ransomware behavior is detected, Bitdefender can block the processes involved, create protected copies of affected files and automatically restore encrypted files when Automatic Restore is enabled. The best way to judge our solution is to actually try it on the system. Our team is always ready to help if needed!

r/antivirus · Bitdefender really disappointing looking for alternatives

You do not really need antivirus on a phone but what you DO need is ad blocker/popup blocker in your phones browser!!!!!! Almost all phone viruses are either downloaded by you or downloaded through scripts from websites through ads. So if you block those ads/scripts they don't get on your phone things like screen lockers and things. There is also Bitdefender Family plan for 79.99 CAD per year for total security it covers 25 devices.

r/antivirus · Total security and Bitdefender free av protection level is same ?

It's close to the same but Not the same. The full paid version includes increased ransomware protection modules according to their site. Also firewall is included in total security. The rest of the differences are less important like parental controls etc. Its worth paying for IMO.

r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton?

No you just didn't do enough research bitdefender has a (family) edition that's reasonably priced and covers 10 devices. One of the big negatives people don't like with Norton and Mcafee if the ads and nagging for sure but also over the past few years they started (demanding) and requiring your credit card to use it... So if you buy a license on Amazon or some other site you can't use it without linking your credit card ... Why you might ask... Because they WANT you to forget and let it auto renew at a higher price.... Which is scummy/scammy.

r/antivirus · Panda security. There webside just screams scam.

15-20 years ago there was plenty of decent options , I myself even used Panda at one point long ago and it was decent but they have long since been surpassed by competition. Competitors have created much more advanced protection most likely because they have more customers/users and money/investment into the products. These days I think there are 3 that sit at the top being Bitdefender/Kaspersky/ESET although not Kaspersky if you live in the USA since it is banned there.

r/antivirus · Is BitDefender Premium still one of the best?

I'm not defending or "sugarcoating" Defender. I'm asking for evidence. You said Malwarebytes found two viruses that Defender missed. What were the detection names? Were the files actually confirmed to be malicious? That's pretty important before concluding Defender failed. And yes, Malwarebytes, ESET, Bitdefender, etc. can catch something Defender misses. Defender can also catch something another AV misses. No antivirus has a 100% detection rate. Other people saying "Defender is garbage" isn't evidence either. Show what Malwarebytes actually detected in your case and then we have something meaningful to compare.

That is so funny ‘cause if I do the latter, we’ll have the exact same setup. I also have only 16GB RAM and I’m currently using BitDefender free version (didn’t use the trial). I haven’t touched anything on my laptop, in terms of debloating and deleting pre-installed applications I don’t use. When nothing’s open, it’s usually around 42% usage (can’t give exact rn). Unfortnately I can’t remember how much the usage was before I installed BitDefender.

r/antivirus · Is malwarebytes on its own enough for periodic scanning on android?

Mobile operating systems are more secure than desktop operating systems due to the architectural differences. So the answer is no, you technically don't need an anti-malware application on mobile. Realistically, the most common and abused way to get infected on android is by installing third party apps from third party sources and granting them the permissions they request, unless an unknown vulnerability is being actively exploited, which is very unlikely. Also keep in mind that most, if not all mobile anti-malware applications rely primarily on signature based detection. Only a handful, such as **Bitdefender Mobile Security**, offer *real-time protection*.

r/antivirus · Is the free version of bitdefender better or worse than microsoft defender?

It's the same. Pretty much all of them are the same at this point. Some will find virus A and miss B, others will find both, but miss that sketchy website you like, and others will miss both because they were designed to hide from that one specifically. And they don't work together because they all try to lock down the same resources and will often see each other as malware. Many of them all have some built in advertisements trying to get you to sign up for a subscription or higher level of sub. Just pick one and use it. Then use your brain and avoid the dark web, irritating script kiddies on Twitter, becoming the CEO of a major company, plugging random USB devices you found in parking lots into you PC, sketchy sites whose names don't match the URLs, downloading things from places you aren't absolutely sure about, or using your laptop for financial things while at the coffee shop or other public Wi-Fi. Also, stop listening to fear mongering TikToks... they're usually trying to sell you something sketchy...

I just need to get a is that could block me from suspicious downloads, phishing emails and phishing sites. Ofc I would like to remove those websites what asks you to allow notifs to play the video, or something else. I heard eset is good in it, since I'm a cheap I only allow free items (if temu antivirus then temu antivirusn🥰). I heard that Avast is giving out free VPN, 5GB but fast. I don't know what's better, BitDefender or Kaspersky. Both are nice and usable, but Kaspersky allows only 2 devices per email, BitDefender 10-unlimited.

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender or ESET?

Bitdefender is somewhat good if you don't care about security and want something that kinda "works" out of the box. Beware that the anti crypto module doesn't seem to work (it didn't catch a crypto-miner I had), the firewall is imo very lenient by default (needs hardening imo). I wasn't impressed with it when I tested it (I no longer use it), but it seems that many people are happy with it, so ymmv. Eset is very good, but it needs tweaking (in my opinion the default settings are not hardened enough), and the fact that the firewall don't enforces by default the full path for signed path is infuriating. Still, easy recommandation.

r/antivirus · Which is better: Bitdefender free or Microsoft Defender?

It isn't. Microsoft Defender didn't miss 12% of them. It just blocked them post execution, which is pretty fine most of the time. Have a look at the test methodology for more details. And on most AV tests, all AVs are reported as 99% because the tests are all fundamentally flawed. When you put them up against new samples or withhold it access to the cloud, that's where Defender breaks down. Better AVs like Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Sophos etc. on the other hand get a chance to shine here.

i do that and i'm not having any issues - other than that Bitdefender takes up a lot of memory. also, Malwarebytes Browser Guard can be a bit aggressive, meaning it can block websites even though they're not malicious. if you get annoyed by that, you could use Firefox + uBlock Origin + Bitdefender TrafficLight. also, Bitdefender has its own internet protection module. it's also recommended you use second opinion scanners from time to time, like ESET Online Scanner or Emsisoft Emergency Kit. if you're outside the US, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool is also a great option.

r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton?

Because if you're a tech savvy person, you don't need to pay for an AV, Defender along with a few other helpful tools, like an ad blocker is good enough. That means you don't need to pay for an AV, and if you do need a 3rd party one, Bitdefender has a free version. You don't need all of their gimmicks and crap in the paid versions. If you need a VPN, get an actual VPN from a reputable provider, the ones from AV companies usually suck. Also Norton has a horrible reputation for their AV being so baked in that it's practically malware and you had to do a lot of stuff to remove it. Most of the big name consumer AVs all score pretty similarly so you don't necessarily have to pay for Norton or BD, Defender will catch the average run of the mill malware that the others will catch

r/antivirus · What antivirus I should get? I am really confused between Norton360 and BitDefender.

Hello, Oh, it is completely reasonable to ask, but you just need to keep in mind that the people responding may use their computers in entirely different ways than you (and have very different configurations) that their responses, even if detailed, may be off the mark because of how you use your computer. In other words, take everything with a grain of salt. There are [independent testers](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_understanding_antivirus_software_tests_and_testers) who look at the various security programs as well, and while keeping the above provisios in mind, they can be a source of good information, at least when it comes to comparing detection rates and performance over time. A final thought I'll leave you with: Norton is actually a sub-brand of Gen Digital, the same company that owns Avast, AVG, Avira, Bulldog, LifeLock, Piriform, and so on, and all of their antivirus programs use the same underlying engine. So, detection is going to be the same for all of these programs, and the only difference will be in their user interfaces, plus any ancillary features they might offer that is specific to a brand (if any). Bitdefender doesn't re-brand its software, but they do license their detection engine to many different companies (Acronis, ALYac, Arcabit, Cisco, Cybereason, Emsisoft, FireEye, G Data, MWTI (eScan) Seqrite, Total Defense, and VIPRE (ThreatTrack) to name a few), so these companies security products are going to have similar detection rates and performance, at least when it comes to their antivirus engines. Now, those are OEM deals and not just re-skinning, so those companies will have other features and integrations as well, which can make a difference in detection and response, but it is something to keep in mind as well. Best of luck in choosing your security solution. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

Hello, Each of the vendors you asked about offers a trial version, so… try each one, and see which one works best on your computer for your use. Most antivirus programs have a negligible impact on performance these days, even on games. In terms of using something free versus buying something, most commercial antivirus programs have trial versions that you can install and see if they meet your needs. Whether or not a program is free or has a subscription has no impact on its performance or efficacy. You could install something that is free and it works well on your system and provides a high level of protection, or pay a lot of money for an antivirus program which doesn't. As far as actual antivirus/antimalware/internet security/security suite/endpoint protection (etc. etc. etc.) programs go, there is no one "best" program, as each has its plusses and minuses. Performance, system resource usage, and detection rates change with every update, and those occur multiple times throughout the day. So, any of the programs listed in the wiki at https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_anti-virus_.28aka_anti-malware.29_developers would be a good starting place to find what is **best for you**. It also lists the countries each developer is headquartered in. Start by searching the *OS Support?* to find out which developers make security software for your device's operating system. * If you are looking for a **free** program, check out the ones with a check mark ("✔️") in the *Free Version?* column. * If you are looking for a **paid** program, check out the ones with a check mark ("✔️") in the *Paid Version?* column. Once you have an idea of which program(s) seem to best meet your needs, you can check the [Understanding Antivirus Software Tests and Testers](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_understanding_antivirus_software_tests_and_testers) section of the wiki for a list of reputable independent testing organizations and see what they have to say about your selection(s). Detection rates are one metric, but be sure to also look at performance, reliability, stability, level of customer service and tech support provided, and, if course, cost. Also be sure to check out the [Free Tools](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_web_browser_ad_blocking_tools) section of the wiki for programs you can use to provide additional security to your web browser and the [Securing your Computer](https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/wiki/index#wiki_securing_your_computer) as well for additional free tips on protecting your computer. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

r/antivirus · Why the hate for Norton?

Agree that their VPN is slow. But I don’t really use their password manager or their cloud backup or their life lock. So yeah, it’s $30 for a year to purely use Norton as an anti-virus software protection for 10 devices. Btw, have never encountered any performance issues with or while running Norton. Yes, Bitdefender may beat Norton in some tests but it’s not a significant upgrade as far as I’m concerned. Also, from the pricing perspective, I don’t think I can get Bitdefender protection for 10 devices and unlimited VPN for $30. So while I’m on the lookout for a better alternative, it has to be significantly better with marginal price increase and offer the 10-device protection and VPN. I don’t want to fix something that’s not broken.

r/antivirus · BitDefender or Windows Defender with Malwarebytes extension?

The pop-up ads would bother me more than the RAM. Free security tools that nag you to upgrade tend to teach you to dismiss their warnings without reading them, which defeats the point. The layered setup above is a good call. One gap it leaves is the fake login page. Nothing to scan, no download, just a convincing page. DNS filtering only catches those once the domain is on a list. There's a browser extension called Haven for that gap. It checks where a link actually goes and gives you a verdict before you land, and pauses downloads on anything it can't verify. No upsell pop-ups, free for individuals. It's my product, so weigh it accordingly.

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender vs Kaspersky?

I personally have never used an AV other than Defender. If you do gaming, Kaspersky is good. Yeah, it can have really good live monitoring and will catch infostealers. Just don't download suspicious files or unzip any unknown file; you should be good to go with Kaspersky. Also, before running any .exe or unzipping a file, try uploading it to VirusTotal. It has like 70 of the best AVs in the world. Though if it has 1-3 false flags, it's fine as long as AVs like BitDefender, Kaspersky, Defender, and Avast are saying it's safe.

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender vs Kaspersky?

I didn't have anything sensitive on my laptop to be stolen, but if it reached Discord, it probably could have reached everything. Also, I think BitDefender paid is really good at stopping infostealers; even Google and ChatGPT are saying this. But to be honest, as long as you don't go on really sketchy websites and avoid clicking links, you should be good and never even need an AV.

    r/antivirus · Bitdefender vs Kaspersky?

BitDefender is a bit better, but Kaspersky is really close to it and is also lighter on your PC. However, I'd say you don't really need an antivirus; Defender and uBlock are already really solid.

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

I really like ESET if you get it with liveguard which is their cloud sandboxing that automatically scans new files for zero day threats and because you can customize things so much. There’s literally hundreds of options to dig through. I have it so every outbound connection requires approval or rules for future auto approvals, so nothing is talking to any remote server unless I approve it. ESET provides the program, location on the computer and the ip connection and reputation scores for all outbound and inbound connections. If in doubt I ask an LLM if the connection looks normal. You get a real appreciation for how many programs are constantly chattering out to the web and dropping temporary update exe files that get deleted without you even knowing they were there. Probably beyond what most users are willing to put up with but I like it. I’d say ESET is really good at prevention while Malware bytes is often used to clean up malware, but maybe that’s unfair to say. I think you have to really get under the hood and be willing to tinker with ESET to get all the benefits though. Also while liveguard is their standout feature it isn’t cheap and only comes in their premium subscription. I think it’s $60 per year typically. If you want to stay cheap I’ve heard good things about Bitdefender but never used it myself. I

    r/cybersecurity · Bitdefender (antivirus) shenanigans.

Bitdefender, and many other platforms utilize a database of domains with previous breaches, and known malicious activities. You will find that some sites you visit will give you this notification. Some sites remain on the list even after they have remediated the issue, however the site owners do not know they are on a list somewhere. If you get those warnings, just be mindful aware of what information you are entering and you will be fine. You can always double check with Virus Total to see what other vendors say about the domain.

    r/cybersecurity · Bitdefender (antivirus) shenanigans.

Bitdefender is, essentially, man-in-the-middle'ing you. It is safe if you trust them, but this means their product will know all the sites you visit (whether they tie that data to you specifically is a different matter). It is possible to disable this feature in Bitdefender like I have, but the product will complain and you'll have to accept always seeing the "you are vulnerable" systray icon.

r/antivirus · Bitdefender really disappointing looking for alternatives

I sent you my details to your DM/account and never got a reply. But the person responding to my ticket has been clear they aren't going to do anything. Just kept saying this is how licencing works and I can by another license if I want to protect my secure folder. Oh well.

r/antivirus · Bitdefender really disappointing looking for alternatives

I understand that part. But if they say each seat covers a device, and then it turns out there's a device that's out there (a very popular Samsung phone that millions of people own) that needs 2 copies of bitdefender to provide complete coverage for said phone, then I'd think they would simply give you an additional license to cover the phone. Or figure out a way for their software licensing tool to recognize it's a Samsung phone and handle it automatically on their end. Their licensing software is already absolutely aware of what devices it is installed on. The model number shows on the site when you look at bitdefender central. I don't agree with their explanation saying it's like having a vm or second partitions on a PC. Became in that case you are running a completely separate is with a separate os license. Samsung phones are designed with the security folder feature. I didn't install a separate 3rd party vm software or os ony phone, it came that way. They wouldn't lose anything by added 1 more seat to my subscription and they already have the technology to see which devices I have my 5 seats installed on, they can verify that I'm not trying to get a free seat for some 2nd phone or deceive them.

My personal opinion Kaspersky is the best if you leaving out of US, then Bitdefender. If you consider free AV, I suggest Windows Defender with some optimization made with ConfigureDefender or DefenderUI that tune the settings, and the difference is noticeable!

well, try removing it then. personally, i believe there are other AV alternatives such as Kaspersky and bitdefender that are both offer realtime protection on their free version. try giving those a go. also, try keeping browsers between 1 or 2, there's no need for 4. and no, i'd not let avg into my computer knowing there are better alternatives (in the context of dealing with viruses)

Ah shittt! McAfee for 10 devices for 1 year costs £34.99, while BitDefender's paid version for 10 devices for 1 year costs £24.95. Hopefully I can get a fucking refund. I do have a legitimate issue with McAfee as well. Absolutely nowhere on the Home Screen will it let me enable their "sEcUrE VpN" on my Mac. I wanna watch Disney+. The VPN was one of the reasons I paid for it. Bummerrrrr.

r/antivirus · AV Comparatives Performance Winner- McAfee

Yes but the difference is not big as it used to be. Obviously faster hardware is one too. Btw one guy posted a comment on another post here in this sub that kaspersky has more false positives than bitdefender. I couldn't laugh much harder reading that. I have tried several workflows over many years and yes kaspersky is not immune to FPs but saying it has more than BD is....

r/cybersecurity · Do people still rely on antivirus software in 2026, or is built-in security enough now?

I highly recommend BitDefender + MalwareBytes (free). Only ~$70/ year and has the top rated detection rates of any AV software. I think it stopped 100% of zero days in their tests. Throw that in with Windows Smart Apps and proper firewall configuration and you're solid. Social engineering is the most common way to get compromised, but this setup will save you if you make a mistake and open an email attachment or click to a website you shouldn't have. I personally don't trust Windows which to rely solely on them.

r/cybersecurity · Norton Antivirus and Other Norton Software

With modern encrypted malware it, consumer grade AV is pretty useless. I see better detection monitoring our of a home network monitoring software on a router or firewall, however you need a device with sufficient processor capability to run it (enthusiast grade). If you want an alternative to Norton AV, bitdefender tests better. Still misses 70%. Better practice is to nuke and reinstall your devices at least annually.

r/antivirus · What in the world is happening with my F-Secure ?

Sorrow to hear that F-Secure has taken this turn, yep. Hope it will get a little better (at least for you) in the next updates, although I doubt they’re going this way with the Avira core. Windows Defender is still okay as a replacement, DefenderUI makes it better too. Add an ad blocker and it’s pretty good to start a new free computer protection. BitDefender TrafficLight extension for your browser is a great touch too. BitDefender/Kaspersky/ESET are better if you are ready to spend money into another AV. Although you may not like BitDefender as much as Kaspersky and ESET since it’s a bit heavy.

r/antivirus · Bitdefender antivirus free with Comodo firewall

Don't, just don't. They don't work together. Even though Bitdefender free don't have an active firewall, they still have some sort of basic defence against hacking the host and this feature will conflict with Comodo's HIPS. You will end up in not getting the benefit of any individual product if this happens. Advice to use windows firewall and tweak it with malwarebytes WFC for additional control.

r/antivirus · Looking for McAfee alternatives

McAfee is literally worse than having no antivirus whatsoever, and is easily the worst big name product on the market. If you're on Windows, Windows Defender which is free and built in is vastly superior and more secure than many of the paid products on the market. If you really want to take things a step further, Bitdefender or Kaspersky are generally the best products on the market.

r/antivirus · Do you think Bitdefender triumphs over other anti viruses?

I love it for home use. A couple years ago, I helped an old lady recover her files from her HDD after her computer died. Recently, her son reached out for me asking for help because he got hacked. He was using windows 8 and some type of version of windows defender. So I got him on W11 and gave him bitdefender and I’m very confident in it. I’d love to inquire about/give Bitdefender GravityZone a try for work, but, our security software is managed through our MSP, so if Sophos is what they use, it’s just what we have to stick with

r/antivirus · McAfee - is it being dramatic?

Mcafee is absolute dogshite for an AV, it's worse than built in windows defender and imo it's paid for malware with all the popups, ads and crap it throws in your face to try and get more money out of you, it's also a horrible resource hog. If you want a 3rd party av I'd recommend eset or Bitdefender.

r/antivirus · im thinking of finding a new free anti virus software until i can possibly afford norton. Im currently using 360 total security but ive heard lots of backlash from them. is there any good recommendations?

Kaspersky I’d say is the best. Bitdefender as an alternative. Both gives you excellent protection for free. But you’re gonna buy a premium antivirus, choose one of them, probably Kaspersky because it is cheaper and offers better protection. You should not get Norton under any circumstances.

r/antivirus · Malwarebytes Premium, Bitdefender Total Security or Norton 360?

Which one? None. IMO, MalwareBytes is still not an actual antivirus, and hasn't found me anything for years and years. Norton's catch-rate is fine but if Norton breaks it will take your PC down with it. Trash. (Shame. Used to be the gold standard.) Bitdefender is fine, I guess, and less prone to bricking Windows, but still unnecessary. I use: Windows Defender as the only active protection, plus SUPERAntiSpyware Free (manual updates, manual scans,) plus Spyware Blaster (passive blacklist,) plus Ghostery in my browsers (blocks ads and general chicanery.)
