Netgear Orbi RBK 852

r/orbi · Orbi 770 versus Orbi 850 (RBK853) - wifi range to satellites? Sounds like OP already made the switch, but I can provide my specific experience for the benefit of others. I ran the RBK852 config for the past three years and it was absolutely rock stable. Never had any issues with it despite a house full of devices and multiple 4k streaming TVs. I was itching to try Wi-Fi 7 though as my Pixel 9 Pro comes with it. As luck would have it, I was gifted the Orbi 770 for Christmas. I ran benchmarking speed tests all over my house and yard with each setup. I'm on 1 gig fiber internet. To start, the 850 does have better max range. In most locations (short and medium distances) there's not much difference on the download speed, but at farther distances the 850 performed better. For example, on my outside patio I would get 40mbps with the 850 and 18 Mbps with the 770. Where the 770 really shines is in the consistency of both upload and download performance. With the 850 I would get something like 500mbps down and 300 Mbps up. With the 770 I get 480 down and 450 up. Imperceptibly less down performance, but way better up performance. I saw this pattern in every location around my house with the 770. I was nervous about the 770 using MLO for back haul instead of a dedicated channel like the 850, but the back haul works perfect. Satellite performance just has the same range limitations as the router, no fault of the back haul. I'm keeping the 770. I like knowing that my future devices will be on the newer 7 standard. For my house I don't need the absolute most amount of range. I just need solid performance within the walls and the 770 does that great.

r/orbi · Orbi 770 versus Orbi 850 (RBK853) - wifi range to satellites? Speedwise 770 worked fine for me. I di dhave issues with new iphones disconnecting but that happened with 970 as well until they pushed out new firmware and I relocated my satellites. Looks like 853 had better antennas compared to 770 and that might be the cause for range issues. 770 is considered an affordable Wifi 7 option so some compromise is to be expected I guess.

r/HomeNetworking · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/ 1 RBS 850) Issues!!! Have this exact model. You need to upgrade the firmware directly from Netgear website via manual upload to both RBK and RBS. Two different firmwares same number. Then factory reset both. They should work fine.

r/orbi · Netgear Rbk853-100nas - Orbi Ax6000 Tri-band Mesh Wifi System (3-pack) Just set up my RBK852 this evening. By far the most frustrating set up I’ve ever done when it comes to a mesh system. Netgear must have it this on purpose solely just to know we suffer through this. Router updates itself naturally via the set up process. Once it does though it has the most up to date firmware buttttt the satellite(s) dont which means they won’t sync to the router. I had to dig through countless threads, forums, videos, etc. and of course the answer was found on Reddit and not Netgear site. Here’s how to fix the satellite issue, or at least what worked for me. 1) Go to Netgear support page, find your product, go to firmware, download the most recent RBS aka satellite firmware (which should usually be the firmware version that the router just updated too) and then extract it in your files. 2) connect the satellite to the router via Ethernet cord. 3) sit back and wait for as long as needed. Eventually the satellite will show up as a connected device in your list of devices connected to the router (should say RBS850 or whatever model you have). Once this appears click on it and make note of the IP address. 4) open a browser and enter that IP address into the URL bar and hit enter. Should take you to a satellite login page. 5) once in look to the left for the firmware option and select it. Then hit browse and select the extracted file and then upload. This should update your satellite to latest firmware. From there you can disconnect the satellite and move it to its new location, power it up, and it will sync with router. Once you’ve done this promptly pick up your RBR850 system and aggressively throw it out the window or take it to your nearest firing range.

r/HomeNetworking · Eero 7 Max Mesh Network vs. Multi-AP Network Is there a specific Unifi model you recommend? And, I did (temporarily) buy one additional Orbi satellite. I tried two things - both inside right inside the tv, one hardwired, one wireless. Minimal improvement. One inside hardwired, one outside, right next to the TV, wireless. Half the time the TV doesn't even connect to the satellite 1 foot from it. Highlighted what people said online - Orbi coding sucks and can't affiliate with specific satellites the way it should. So that is why I am looking at something new.

r/orbi · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/1 RBS 850) Issues!!! I still have this issue with my RBK852. Firmware is up to date. This problem occurs randomly, once or twice in a month. People who have had this problem, do you have static IP setup for any of your devices at home? I have two and starting to think it is linked to this problem. Maybe there is a IP conflict the router is not managing well.

r/orbi · Orbi 770 versus Orbi 850 (RBK853) - wifi range to satellites? A little late to this but I’ve just moved from an Orbi 852 which I understand is 4x4 on all bands to a 772 which is 2x2 with no dedicated backhaul and…. I can’t see any difference in range. House is single story 370 sqm on a 700 sqm block and both orbi’s provide full coverage. I have the satellite approve 35ft from the router through two 6inch brick walls. So, swapped from 852 to 772 with the same coverage, router and satellite in the same positions.

r/orbi · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/1 RBS 850) Issues!!! Yes - i have no issues when connected directly to the gateway. I have a server connected to the router via ethernet and see the issues there as well, so it's not wifi. I think the orbi is suddenly having issues with the ip passthrough provided by the att gateway. I tried a firmware downgrade and full reset and reconfig without restoring from backup (which is a massive pain) and still see the issues. I just turned off all logging, which was suggested somewhere here... going to see if that fixes it - if not, going to switch over to ubiquiti like many of the suggested posts tell me to do.
r/orbi · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/1 RBS 850) Issues!!! I'm running my orbi into an at&t fiber gateway, and it's worked fine for years. Suddenly, it's giving me intermittent dns errors and dropping packets to the gateway from the router. Really intrusive for video calls...

r/HomeNetworking · Netgear Orbi Router RBK 852 (RBR 850/RBS 850) 1. Old house built in the early 70s or a little before. Wood and 1 plaster wall inside. I assume you mean inside walls and not out. 2. ONT is just an ONT. No WiFi capability. It’s a Calix GigaPoint 803G 3. Yes, good WiFi on router. It’s a Netgear Orbi RBK 852 unit. When I’m in the same room as the main router it’s anywhere from 500-800 or so mbps. Ping anywhere from 7-10 ms. I get random disconnects on my WiFi and also I have some disconnects on wired plus occasional buffering issues and weird video quality at random times when watching shows on my TV. I have an Apple TV 4K with a 1 gig Ethernet port. Speed tests on it… 939-942/940 ping is 4 ms. 4. Details about issues outside of ping spikes are detailed in answer 3. 5. I used the web interface to set it up. I was told the app doesn’t set up well. Also, something else I’ve noticed. My Orbi app now connects to my router rather slowly.
r/HomeNetworking · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 Also, it seems something is disconnecting. Not sure if it’s the router/satellite or maybe my Fiber ONT. I have 1 gbps internet. Something doesn’t sit right with me.
r/orbi · Calix GigaPoint 803G Full Bridge Modem/ONT/1-1 Gigabit Fiber/Netgear Orbi RBK 852 setup…. Having a lot of connection issues!!! Because at the time I had more devices to wire than what the back of the Orbi supported. I pretty much just have my ONT plugged into it and my Apple TV. Along with the switch, of course. Everything else goes directly into the switch.
r/orbi · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/1 RBS 850) Issues!!! u/stratguy1441 in all honesty I don’t think my issues are related to speed as I used to think. I think it’s something off somewhere else. I maintain a pretty consistent speed of around 940/940 on my desktop PC when I check the speed. Obviously I’ll lose some of that while streaming content but I’ve actually checked speed on my desktop while streaming in 4K. At most it drops to like 880. My ping is low too. 5 ms on wired desktop.
r/HomeNetworking · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/ 1 RBS 850) Issues!!! Why would I need to factory reset the Orbi’s after I do a firmware update? Sounds counter productive.
r/orbi · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/1 RBS 850) Issues!!! This all costs so much money.
r/orbi · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/1 RBS 850) Issues!!! Whatever firmware it was on when I first was installed with the fiber and connected the Orbi to it…It didn’t happen. Every firmware update since then it has.
r/orbi · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/1 RBS 850) Issues!!! I agree. When I first got my fiber hooked up everything worked beautifully. Then little by little things just started going wrong. I can’t imagine what I’ve possibly done wrong. I just want it to be as good now as on day 1.
r/orbi · Calix GigaPoint 803G Full Bridge Modem/ONT/1-1 Gigabit Fiber/Netgear Orbi RBK 852 setup…. Having a lot of connection issues!!! I had it then too
r/orbi · Calix GigaPoint 803G Full Bridge Modem/ONT/1-1 Gigabit Fiber/Netgear Orbi RBK 852 setup…. Having a lot of connection issues!!! My WiFi keeps seemingly going down.

r/orbi · Using RBK852 as an AP in an xFinity XB8 Mesh That isn't mesh. That is a Frankenstein mess. You'll have multiple wireless units separately broadcasting the same SSID, but connecting differently like 2 separate access points on the same network. It isn't a seamless handoff mesh. Yes, the wireless should work with the Orbi in AP mode. However, you lose the whole reason for having the mesh and will simply have a really expensive access point. Fast handoff is not mesh and not 100% seamless. If your Orbi is still new- box it up and send it back to save your money. Get something else.

r/orbi · Orbi 770 versus Orbi 850 (RBK853) - wifi range to satellites? Thanks a lot. Yes, that does help. Ours (realize it is an 853 vs your 863) has also been rock solid as well. Just debating whether it is a good time to get away from my extra router (Flint 2) if possible, even though it is in a home office room, so it is not a huge deal as far as the visibility of the extra hardware and wiring is concerned.
r/orbi · Orbi 770 versus Orbi 850 (RBK853) - wifi range to satellites? Thanks! Yes, the RBK853 is working fine for my wifi needs, coupled with my Flint 2 (typically only used for wired) to give me the 2.5Gbps LAN capability (as noted). Will look into BE wifi issue reports. Seem to be mixed reports out there - many seem to have issues, while others don't. I recall reading reviews of people experiencing issues with one of my Orbi models whereas mine have almost always been rock solid (the 'almost always' being one or two firmware revisions over the years that were less than optimal). I am still debating. :) I suppose I could still try the 770 and if it does not work, just return it.
r/orbi · Orbi 770 versus Orbi 850 (RBK853) - wifi range to satellites? About 3100 sq feet, NOT including a large finished basement which has lots of wireless devices also (s o3 stories to cover). I think the theoretically is the key / operative word there. I tested my Netgear A8000 Wiif 6E adapter in the same room as the RBR850 router and it did not get anywhere near what I get via LAN (around 1.5 Gbps - a bit less since I am capped at around 1,400 Mbps (but one of my programs says I am getting 1.5 Gbps during a download). I do not have a lot of wifi 7 devices yet, except for my laptops which is where I need it most anyway. My desktop is on a LAN connection anyway and other devices get more than enough throughput with my RBK853. That said, aside from getting wifi 7 (which I could wait for till I have more wifi 7 devices), **my bigger / main reason for getting the 770 right now is to get rid of the extra clutter and reliance on the the 2nd router (Flint-2). I would normally just wait to do so, but the sale price of the 770 couple with a coupon and factoring in the resale of my Flint 2 and Orbi RBK853, now would not be that bad of a time to jump** (I know there is always going to be newer tech coming down the pike, but that is a never ending chase then, if you always wait). But the 30 percent of 1-star and 1-star reviews of the Orbi 770 reviews have me leery. So I need to check some more real world reviews, especially if I can find reviews of the 770 vs 850 which compare the range of the 2. I check Ndong Ngo's site, but no comparison reviews.
r/orbi · Orbi 770 versus Orbi 850 (RBK853) - wifi range to satellites? Thanks for the additional details and feedback. Hopefully you're enjoying the 970. Yes, I am leaning towards trying it out. Right now I can get the 770 3-pack brand new for a great price after sale price and coupon, so I may just try it out and compare it (just a bit of a hassle to switch my setup and switch back if it doesn't work out, but think it is worth a shot. EDIT - I just checked out BestBuy reviews for the 770 (again) and it has a over 20% 1-star reviews and almost 10 pct 2-star reviews. :( Some examples user reviews from Best Buy for the 770: Reviewer 1 *- "the speeds and range were really no better than my Orbi 753 system. The Eero 7 is much faster"* Reviewer 2 - "*Would not purchase again. Bought to replace 5 year old netgear nighthawk equipment. This was not a upgrade, coverage is not better and intermittent connectivity is a issue. Will drop on some things but not other then vice versa while sitting beside each other and connected the same way. "* Reviewer 3 - "*I had an existing Orbi AC1300 system with 2 satellites. I put the new 770 devices in the exact same spots in my house (which does have some brick interior walls) and had nothing but problems... slow speeds, weak signal, questionable handoffs, etc."* I am used to seeing some users with complaints / issues (even for products like my Orbi 853 which has been stellar); however the 770 seems to have a disproportionately high percentage of users saying it does not work well in terms of range or stability. Let me check more reviews again elsewhere (had done some research a couple of months ago on it, but need to refresh my memory). Assume you had no issues with your 770?
r/orbi · Orbi 770 versus Orbi 850 (RBK853) - wifi range to satellites? Thanks for the feedback. Did you ever have the Orbi 850 or similar before the Orbi 770 for comparison? I read in one review of the 770 on [Netgear.com](http://Netgear.com) where an owner experienced inferior range than their prior generation Orbi, but it was just one review. I just do not want to go to the 770 and have worse range than my current 853 which (with 1 router and 2 satellites) does a great job covering every area of my home.
r/orbi · Love my new Orbi 770! u/YouAreAwake Thanks for sharing! Very helpful info. How many units do you have (2 or 3) and what size home are you covering approx? How is the wifi range of the 770 compared to the 850? I am asking since I have Orbi RB853 (850 series) and, while am very happy, I am considering the 770 ("3 pack" - router + 2 satellites). Current setup - I got a second router (Flint 2) just to add 2.5GBps LAN capability and a 2.5Gbps switch (also fantastic price) since the Orbi 850 series does not support 2.5Gbps LAN connections, so that partially defeats the purpose of it having 2.5 Gbps WAN port if I want to have single device speeds over 1 GBps... With my new setup (where I still use the 3-unit Orbi RBK853 for wifi) I can now get wired downloads speeds that max out my 1.5 Gbps internet speeds on Xfinity instead of being limited to 1 Gbps with the Orbi RBK853 alone... Wondering whether to get the Orbi 770 to remove the need for the extra (Flint 2 in my case) router for wired use. That said, the Orbi 850+Flint 2 + switch setup is rock solid. It just creates extra clutter and one more device in the chain to worry about). Thanks for any feedback!

r/orbi · Netgear Orbi RBK 852 (1 RBR 850/1 RBS 850) Issues!!! My RBK 852 has worked well... now an 853 since I bought a refurbished RBS850 and added to the network. My issue was Comcast related... 500mbps and 1GB down but either service only 20Mbps up... continuous video conference problems. Now I have fiber 500/500 and all is smooth. But setting up the RBK852 with ONT is tricky as the ONT needs to be set up as a passthrough properly AND the RBK852 needs to be powered off and on AFTER the ONT is configured as a passthrough properly.

Same, had issues with Orbi for years. I had the 852 a d the RBR50 before that, but upgraded to the Dream Router 7. Instantly my speed went up 50%. Plus actually having 2.5gbps ports is amazing. I absolutely love the features on the app.
