Surfshark

Surfshark, packshot

Good idea, but I could also do without everything else except the actual VPN service. I don't use any of those other things and I don't think many people do. There are far better apps to do all those things. Your app has become so bloated. I love the VPN service, you're the best I've ever tried. Especially with the new Dausos protocol. Why do you waste resources on anything other than being the best VPN?

Proton and Mullvad are comparable. Surfshark is not even in the planet and cannot be compared to these 2. Proton has more servers and allows 10 devices. You can get it on good deals for 2 years. Mullvad is slightly more private as it does not even require an email. But servers are not as large on quantity as proton. Only 6 devices are allowed. Both are excellent in privacy - no logs. Both accept cash. Mullvad you can buy prepaid voucher from Amazon. Proton you can get gift vouchers from proton shop online.

Ditto on not using Surfshark. I would recommend moving all services to Proton Unlimited so you have end-to-end encryption across the board for everything. Not just VPN. I used Fastmail for email for 25 years, legally based in Australia but with USA offices (where I am), and one of the reasons I gave them up this year was this law.

I know, I founded, built, and ran successful tech companies for 42 years. Surfshark is the best value VPN of the group. They do a good job of listening to their customers. They have a complete, solid product, and a value prop that positions Surfshark as a leader in a commoditized market. Get over it OP.

r/surfshark · We just redesigned the Surfshark browser extension — here's what changed

Not a big fan of this update, to be honest. The reason why I open the Surfshark extension 99% of the time is to enable the VPN or change country. With the new update, a big focus is given to ad tracking and privacy and the VPN country selector is relegated to a corner and selecting a different country requires extra clicks. I believe “favorites” are gone too. I do think privacy, ad blocking, etc are important, but they’re not something I personally change often. In fact, I set them up once and never changed them, so in my opinion that configuration shouldn’t be given the most prominent space

I haven't used it in some years but the last time I had Surfshark it was laggy software, inconsistent speeds and occasional IP leaks while connected. I moved from Surfshark to Nord which was better but still had issues, then from Nord to Proton. I haven't had any issues with Proton so far except a couple minor outages. Mullvad is a solid option too if all you need is VPN, but it doesn't have port forwarding so it may affect torrenting efficiency if you do that. I prefer Proton because I pay for Unlimited and use all Proton suite except the Wallet.

Funny how they need a separate thing for this. I had tried 2 other VPNs and they just worked. Tried Surfshark as I'd heard good things about it. It never worked for me unless I was on No Borders (even at home on my own wifi) and it was limited to only 6 countries. The other 2 VPNs is used I could connect to any country on any Wifi. Needless to say I dumped SS before the 30days was over and went to a different VPN. (I jump around to get the new user bonuses)

r/surfshark · What Surfshark’s No Borders is— a quick explainer what is it and why you’d need it

Your "support" took 1-2 days to reply to every message I sent hence why it took almost the full 30 days to cancel. Also when I followed their directions it was either everything was No Borders or nothing was. There was no normal at home and No Borders in public. I don't understand how all of the 3 other VPNs I've tried have no issues with public wifi but Surfshark struggles.

I started with Nord, switched to surf shark, and then went back to Nord when my subscription ended. I got caught out with surfshark not working for accessing an Irish stream while I was abroad. Their support was useless. They directed me to connect to UK servers instead, and wouldn't believe me that Ireland and the UK are different countries, so it wouldn't work. I had the opposite experience with Surfshark, I had it for two years, I'm better with Nord now. It's faster, fewer connection problems with auto connect, and sometimes I had a problem when sending mails (POP3) from work connected to the VPN because the IP was reported as SPAM apparently. Also a lot of pages constantly blocking the connection while on VPN or had to take endless "I'm not a robot" tile test. So I started just using the VPN only on public connections. With Nord I have it connected all the time and honestly I forget about it, mostly.

Well, restricted public WiFi can be tricky with any VPN, but if Express was working fine for you, then it might just come down to how Surfshark handles certain networks. Nord doesn’t limit you to a handful of servers like that, though. You still get the full list and might just need to try a couple if one doesn’t work on a specific network. Also, it has a 30-day money-back guarantee as well.

VPN is unreliable in China. What might work today might not work tomorrow. I had no success with Surfshark in China last year. I do have a slight success couple weeks earlier connecting to the HK. I suggest you get an eSIM. There are cheap options that you can hotspot to your laptop especially if you’re there short term. r/nordvpn · Nord vs surfshark

NordVPN connects faster than Surfshark without Dausos (basically on every device except macOS). NordVPN's user interface now sucks and is very laggy somehow. Surfshark is good only if they release their great updates on Windows and other devices. It's clearly bad faith to not release like Multi IP on every device, as it's a server-side feature. Creating a beta to release experiments doesn't seem to be out of reach from my perspective. The VPN industry is very profitable. That's my opinion. I'm know there is much more stuff to talk about.

r/surfshark · Surfshark and Archer router

The main pro of adding the VPN on the router is that one connection serves multiple devices and you don't need to install Surfshark on individual devices. The main con is that some sites detect and block VPN ip addresses e.g., banks, credit reporting services, government sites. You'd face the inconvenience of logging into the router, turning the VPN connection off, going to that blocked website, completing the needed task then turning the VPN connection ON again. My advice: Install Surfshark on endpoint devices e.g., phones & laptops. You can easily pause the connection is you run into a site blocking your connection. On the router, connect device e.g., your work laptop that you can't install the Surfshark app but don't want your OT department knowing your IP

r/surfshark · Be careful with autorenewal

I experienced something similar. I've used Surfshark since 2021. Initially I bought a 1 year sub thru the website then upgraded to a 3-year sub within my 1st year. Later during year 3 (after experiencing connection issues regularly including the Kill Switch option initially working then occasionally not working to never working after mid-2025), I turned off autorenew and planned to re-evaluate my sub and alternative VPNs a month before expiration. When that month came, surprisingly I wasn't notified by Surfshark at all about the expiration and was renewed automatically for 1 year and charged the zero discounts or deals standard high price despite having turned off autorenew a year earlier.

r/surfshark · Download speed drops to 26 from just over 800 when VPN is on.

Hey, thanks for bringing this up. Speed while connected to a VPN server can vary depending on different factors such as device, network restrictions, distance to the server and others. That said, the decrease you're having is definitely more than expected and I understand the frustration. Our team would gladly investigate your case and see what we can do. Could you contact us directly at [support@surfshark.com](mailto:support@surfshark.com) or through [live chat on our website](https://support.surfshark.com/hc/en-us#open-chat)? Thanks!

r/surfshark · Surfshark in China not working as intended all of a sudden

Hey, thanks for letting us know about this. I understand that connection issues can be frustrating, especially when caused by VPN blocking techniques applied in certain regions, such as China. These restrictions are implemented by third parties to prevent users from accessing VPN services, which can result in service interruptions for some users. While we at Surfshark continuously work on technical solutions to maintain stable access, it is virtually impossible for any service provider to guarantee 100% service availability, as VPN blocking is unrelated to the quality of our services. That said, there are technical steps you can try, and our team is always happy to help – please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at [support@surfshark.com](mailto:support@surfshark.com) or via [live chat on our website](https://support.shark-china.com/hc/en-us#open-chat). Thanks a lot!

r/surfshark · We just redesigned the Surfshark browser extension — here's what changed

Hey, the app covers everything on your device, while our browser extension only covers the browser. If you already use the app, you don't need to use the extension at the same time. In fact, if you use both at the same time, that can lead to connection issues as they will interfere with each other. That said, if you only need browser coverage, using the browser extension is a great option.

r/surfshark · Surfshark macOS app — OpenVPN stuck in reconnect loop (3x/sec) + IKEv2 keeps asking for a password that doesn’t work

Unfortunately other protocols are blocked in my region , only ikev2 and ovpn UDP are available for me. I reserved to manually add the ikev2 to my Mac because the app is not usable for me. But the manual workaround does work https://preview.redd.it/1szznwexhjih1.png?width=2035&format=png&auto=webp&s=ae43a860d6a4d17c2845722b7e1b89b648abefbf I’m pretty sure this is not asking my macOS password. That didn’t work either

    r/surfshark · We're phasing out Search — here's why

Hearing you loud and clear. We agree that the end of the day, a fast and reliable VPN engine is the top priority. Phasing out underused features is all about freeing up engineering resources to double down on what's important. Noted and appreciate the straight talk.

    r/surfshark · We're phasing out Search — here's why

Appreciate the feedback! For a lot of users, having a single tool for privacy and protection just keeps things simple. That said, I hear you on the focus aspect - our goal is to keep features modular so they stay completely out of your way if you only want the VPN.

    r/surfshark · We're phasing out Search — here's why

Thanks for the honest feedback! We're always looking for ways to improve Surfshark, whether that's tweaking the UI, phasing out features people don't really use, or making the tools people rely on every day even better. Great to hear Dausos is landing well too, the team put a lot into it. VPN is still at the core of what we do, and cutting underused features helps us keep it lean and fast. That said, online threats have changed a lot over the years, from scams and phishing to identity theft, so we're building Surfshark into a broader online security solution for the people who want that extra layer. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts. I'll make sure they're passed along to the team.

r/surfshark · We just redesigned the Surfshark browser extension — here's what changed

I get the frustration. Here's where we're coming from though. A VPN is not enough in today's world. Scam and phishing attacks are growing fast, and over the years Surfshark has evolved into a security suite. We believe online protection tools should be part of the baseline experience, not something you have to dig through settings to find.

r/surfshark · We just redesigned the Surfshark browser extension — here's what changed

Appreciate the honesty and detailed feedback. The red box is meant to flag when a protection feature isn't running but I hear you that it feels excessive when it's a deliberate choice. We regularly sit down with users to go deeper on feedback like this. If you'd be up for it, shoot an email to miles@surfshark.com. Would love to hear more.

r/surfshark · We just redesigned the Surfshark browser extension — here's what changed

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this The "set it once and forget it" use case is completely valid and we don't want to make it harder. The thinking behind the redesign was to surface scam protection info (what's being blocked, what's flagged) so you actually see the value without hunting for it. On favorites, it was replaced by recently used, idea being your go-to locations just show up without you managing anything. The extra clicks for country switching is a separate issue and I hear you on that. We gave scam protection the front seat because that's where the real threats are growing right now. Appreciate you flagging how that feels as someone who mainly uses VPN.

r/surfshark · We just redesigned the Surfshark browser extension — here's what changed

Good question. You don't want to run both VPN connections at once, they can conflict. But the extension adds browser-level tools the app doesn't: cookie pop-up blocker, malicious site warnings, email scam checker, and data breach alerts for sites you visit. If any of that sounds useful, give it a try. Just keep the app's VPN off while the extension's is on.

r/surfshark · Be careful with autorenewal

Just to be clear, I didn’t cancel mine. I simply did not want autorenewal on. I bought from the website and logged in there to turn it off around the time I bought another plan after my last one expired. So, guess how surprised I was when I noticed it said my subscription was set to autorenewal again.

    Renouvellement
r/surfshark · Be careful with autorenewal

And even if you turned auto-renewal off, double check to make sure. I did that (which is a convoluted process by the way. You should be able to do it in the app!) I noticed it was set to auto renew again.

r/surfshark · Be careful with autorenewal

Hey, once you turn off auto-renewal, you shouldn't see any further charges. Just a heads up - if you bought your plan through the Apple App Store or Google Play, auto-renewal has to be switched off directly through them, not through Surfshark. That said, I'd like to dig into your specific case and see what happened with the cancellation on our end. Mind shooting us an email at [miles@surfshark.com](mailto:miles@surfshark.com) so we can look into it further for you?

That is not an issue, I was aware of that and I was ok with the renewal for 27 months at a price given in the notification email. What is the issue is that the renewal itself was for 12 months at the same exact price. And it being a mistake in an email or not I would never have noticed it if I didn't log into my account to get an invoice.

    r/surfshark · Won’t connect on pc

I have three windows pcs and Surfshark has never worked well on any of them. Even on brand new builds with virtually nothing installed it either never connects or takes forever to connect. Usually it gives some bullshit message about finding some problem with my internet connection. Since everything else works perfectly it’s pretty clear the problem is with Surfshark. I have tried other VPNs and they work fine and connect quickly without issues. I was going to wait for my subscription to expire before moving on but since Surfshark mostly doesn’t work I am getting no value from it so I will be making a switch in the near future.

r/ProtonVPN · Think about joining Proton VPN

I was using hotspotshield premium for a couple of years now until it started to give me issues especially in discord. I tried nordvpn and surfshark, but both had been bad for me (ie. I couldn't use the split vpn function (even after setting it up and talking to their support, the issue was not resolved) and couldn't even open google on my browser with vpn on) proton vpn is so much better than all the others i tried. 1. i can choose to 'not connect' to certain countries. Which helps me avoid connecting through my own country as its the one i'm trying to avoid, but still logs me through the fastest country after my own. 2. i can choose so that it only uses vpn with discord, as opposed to me listing every other program i don't wanna use vpn with. (i need vpn to be able to use discord) 3. the speed is really good, the control i have over what i want vpn to do is really detailed. with hotspot shield I kept having an RTC connection issue, but i have never had that with proton so far. It works good on my mobile too. overall, out of all my experiences with vpns, proton vpn took the crown for me.

r/surfshark · We just redesigned the Surfshark browser extension — here's what changed

I like change and appreciate when UI/UX is continuously improved however this one is not it for me.  I only click the extension to do one of two things, either change the location or pause it. Maybe your data shows differently across the user base but I find it odd that the blocking toggles takes up more space than the VPN itself. Are you guys opening up the extension to switch these on/off? Second I really dislike this UI because I don’t use the ad blocking from Surfshark. So anytime I open the extension I get a massive red box in my face that I can’t dismiss saying the thing I have turned off is off lol.  Maybe I’m being harsh but just eyeballing the UI here it looks wrong

r/ProtonVPN · Think about joining Proton VPN

NordVPN: Overrated speeds, aggressive marketing, recent acquisition of Surfshark. Surfshark: Cheap, but unreliable with mediocre speeds; now under NordVPN's ownership. ExpressVPN: Disliked price hikes after initial sign-up; overall a frustrating experience. ProtonVPN: Used to be excellent, but now relies heavily on virtual servers and marketing, with little focus on genuine performance or new features. Industry Issues: Many top VPNs inflate their server numbers using virtual servers, unwilling to invest in actual hardware. Windscribe + Control D: Your current pick. Offers good deals, all physical servers (except one virtual), reliable performance, great obfuscation (AmenziaWG), and better value than “bigger” competitors.

r/ProtonVPN · Is Proton VPN Plus the right option if I only want a premium VPN service?

I did not know that a free version of Proton VPN is included with each account. I installed it now and the app works flawlessly. Unlike NordVPN and Surfshark, both of which crash on my system for some reason, since several versions back, due to some Nvidia driver conflict that support is unable to help with and I can't figure it out – it probably requires a Windows reinstall. I did a Proton VPN speed test now against a domestic test server, using a national broadband test service (provided by our domain registry). I got 91,82 Mbit/s download, 80,84 Mbit/s upload, and 47,82 ms latency. It went through Netherlands, about 1000 km away. Not bad at all. I have a 100/100 Mbps fiber service.

r/ProtonVPN · Is ProtonVPN better than Mullvad and/or Surfshark VPN?

I am on surfshark and i have been for years. However, i learned they merged with nordvpn two years ago. Surfshark is no longer what it used to be. They have updated their TOS (Terms of service). Like you, i want to go to a different VPN that is affordable and allow torrents, but i have checked the TOS of each top VPN. They all state you will not do anything illegal or download copyright....etc using our services. If you get caught, you are on your own. All VPN'S are getting serious. I was caught using Ivacy because of a dnsleak, and got two e-mails warning me to stop.

r/ProtonVPN · Is ProtonVPN better than Mullvad and/or Surfshark VPN?

In which case, go for the free option of Proton. You can turn it on and it’ll randomly choose an international server. You can also utilise the other free features of Proton. Proton Pass also has a free option. This way, you can upgrade to paid later and retain the same setup. Once you start incorporating mail aliases and proton pass with proton Mail, it’s hard to go back. It just works really well. I used to have SurfShark, but let that go in favour of Proton. I found the marketing aggressive, and didn’t have a lot of faith in full privacy. You get what you pay for. The free Proton option is a cut down trial of the products, but would be sufficient for your needs 😉
