r/projectors · BenQ X3100i vs Valerion VisionMasterPro 2 I personally own the BenQ X3000i which is the predecessor to the X3100i. The most meaningful difference between the X3000i and the X3100i is lens shift. I've been very happy with the X3000i. If you are quoting in USD, those BenQ numbers sound sky high. It's about $2,600 Canadian here which is about $1,900 USD. Even that could be at the high end, but it may be inflation, tariffs, etc. If you could get your hands on a BenQ X3000i and are comfortable with fancy mounting footwork, that could save you even more money. On the other hand. If indeed these are the best prices you can get for both products, the Valerion VisionMasterPro 2 could be the wiser choice. I've never seen one up close; I"m going by available product reviews and specs. Use this tool to calculate your room size and the necessary distance from the screen for your projector choice and screen: [https://www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm](https://www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm) The immediate benefits over the BenQ X3100i are Dolby Vision and HDR10+ compatibility. It is also supposed to be more colorful. Gaming experiences may be a wash between them. The BenQ X3100i is about a third brighter, but with brightness comes the tradeoff of shallower blacks (but you will enjoy the experience all the same - especially in gaming). If the pricing is firm, I say go Valerion. If the rates could be significantly less for the BenQ X3100i, I think your son will be very happy with either model depending on what you are happy to spend! :-)
r/projectors · BenQ X3000i and X3100i May Have Better Black Levels Than Realized Rob? He's a liar and a cheater! I'm kidding - I don't yet know Rob. :-) I've been doing more testing. With all the attention placed on the black ceilings, I didn't consider the reflections from the floor. I laid down a grey area rug - it might have helped further. I did the impossible today. In my projected image, the left and right sides are flush against the velvet part of the screen. However, the top and bottom parts have a good one to two inch margin of screen material between the projected image and the top and bottom edges of the screen. When I projected a pure black image, the margin (where there shouldn't be a projected image at all) and the black image (what the projected area was showing) were the same dark grey. In fact, when I put my hand on top of the margin (where the projector shouldn't be touching at all), I could cast a shadow. This tells me that there is still extraneous light that is somehow being reflected back to the screen. When the lights are out and the projector is off, the screen is a perfect black (this is in a basement). This may be the best I can do. The only thing I could think of is to put some stick-on black velvet on some of the ceiling tiles - but I feel doubtful that would make a meaningful difference. It seems to be a good black level all the same. For me, the BenQ X3000i is a great projector. I read the X3100i has comparable visual results with the benefit of vertical lens shift (which is for sure worth it). My previous projector was a Panasonic AE7000 which was a hard target to beat.
r/projectors · BenQ X3000i and X3100i May Have Better Black Levels Than Realized u/Bellmeister, when I first read your remarks, my thought was your writing style and humor is much like my own. If we ever met in person, I bet the galaxy would fold in on itself. :-) A few observations. First, you are correct about zooming in and out and the actual brightness. I wasn't thinking in terms of how much light was being blasted at a fixed area. I was thinking about how when the image expands across the screen (i.e. as it grows), there is more surface area that is adding to what is being reflecting off the screen and the walls contributing to a more elevated black level. Still, remembering that the smaller focused image is brighter, the projection black level shown in my pics is impressive, yes? The question is what more can I do to maintain that when the image is full size? You are also correct about the lumen count. In practice, it's probably closer to half that amount in the projector modes I use. I was just speaking to the general marketed spec of the projector. I also agree that the brighter the image, the harder it is to show a deep black level. I suspect that those complaining about BenQ X3000i / 3100i black levels may not be taking into account that it's a very bright projector compared to other units that aren't as bright to begin with - so it's not exactly fair. I did try a grey screen, and I ended up returning it. It was helpful with deepening the black level, but it also required me to increase the lamp power to compensate for everything else (no eco modes). The screen fabric was lousy (side issue) - so I had to return it anyway. HOWEVER, it gave me the eureka moment to paint my walls black and go back to my white screen without the brightness tradeoffs - well worth it. Lowering the brightness setting on my projector is not such a good idea. It has a limited floor before you start losing a lot of details. The good news is the image is indeed very good at default; I'm not worried about that. The point I'm trying to say is that the projector's actual black level could probably be even better than what people are contending with if the room could be even more light controlled. I too keep my bass and tone levels to 0 in my audio setups. I think the reason they were included is because speakers of varying quality handle the neutral point differently. Years ago, I saw a video about a science project that used computer analysis and equalizers to take relatively cheap headphones and get them to perform closer to more expensive ones with success. So, the equalizers have merit if you know how to use them. For me, it's too much trouble.
r/projectors · Disappointed with BenQ X3100i purchase. I would get that sent in for warranty repair for sure. I have the BenQ X3000i and I too thought the black level was a bit elevated compared to my Panasonic AE-7000 (about 10 years old). However, the X3000i is much brighter than the Panasonic and the X3100i is a little brighter still. With this in mind, it makes sense that the black level would be a little higher too. Content is also a deciding factor. Are you watching streamed materials? Try 4K Bluray or running Youtube HDR on your PC. I think the experience will be a lot more striking for you.

r/projectors · BenQ X3100i vs Valerion VisionMasterPro 2 Hi like another user above I got the x3000i (which is very similar to 3100i) for like $1300 on ebay refurbished. It had maybe 50 lamp hours on it. It's fantastic and bright as hell. Really great for gaming.. probably overkill for me as I don't play fast paced coop games. Issues: Doesn't have a gimbal and I need to place something underneath it to tilt it as it is currently resting on a stool (waiting to mount it to the ceiling). Also, it may not be as colorful as Valerion (which is a big factor in a light controlled room) but still is plenty colorful as I watch movies on it a lot.
r/budgetprojectors · Looking to upgrade from my BenQ w1070 projector to XGIMI Horizon S Pro. Would that be a significant upgrade? Thank you for the reply! This actually looks much better than the XGIMI one I was looking at!

r/budgetprojectors · Looking to upgrade from my BenQ w1070 projector to XGIMI Horizon S Pro. Would that be a significant upgrade? Great! There are other factors too like projector noise might be better on the Xgimi, but I'm not too sure. Good thing is if you don't like it then eBay has a great return policy.

r/projectors · Best bang for buck 4k projector over 3000lm, 120" at 12'? I think the BenQ TK710 (not the older 700 series) is probably your best choice. The Epson 3800 would be a good alternative if you need more lens shift and don’t mind a lamp and softer image. The BenQ X3100i comes highly recommended. I reviewed the prior X3000i a few years back. It’s a great projector and the only one of these three that will give you some extra color gamut support for HDR. I really like the 4LED light engine for its vibrant colors. However it IS a bit pricier and I’m afraid the contrast isn’t as good as the two above. Fine for big screen gaming but maybe a bit less satisfying while watching movies.
r/projectors · <2000€ 4k/1080p Projector for non-optimal Home Cinema It kills me BenQ never released a standard throw version of the x500i. That model has better contrast/blacks than the vast majority of DLPs outside some of the new triple laser USTs (for whatever reason USTs perform well above their more conventional siblings in this area). I feel your pain. Am anxiously awaiting the W2720i to see what BenQ has done with it but I have concerns about the move back to .47” from .65” especially with their 4LED light engine. All their models so far have used the .65 to good effect. It feels a bit like the availability of affordable 98/100” flat panels has killed the middle market of home theater projectors. The X3000/X3100i (I reviewed the 3000 way back) are very bright, decent contrast— at the time I reviewed the 3000i I remarked on it’s contrast but that was when the average lamp based RGBW 4k DLP was doing around 1000:1 with poor color and around half that with accurate color. The 1200:1 of the X3000i combined with its insane lumen output was a revelation. Then came along the HT2060/TH690ST. (Another model I reviewed— you can find over at AVS) Both 1080p models. Both significantly dimmer than the X3000/3100. But both with WAY better contrast/blacks. I measured the HT2060 over 1900:1 depending on picture mode. I’m still using an HT2060 in my basement home theater and prefer it for PS5 games. The contrast is simply better than everything below the UB Epsons. Despite the ability to accept 4K/HDR I run the 2060 as an Hd/rec709 unit. Then BenQ dropped the Ht4550i. Reliability issues aside this is still my favorite DLP that has ever been released. I wept quietly when mine bit the dust a couple months ago. Contrast was closer to the X3000i (around 1300:1) but a variety of picture enhancements including the first usable application of their smarteco dimming feature, a clever ‘local contrast’ enhancer and hands down the best HDR tone mapping I’ve seen this side of a JVC— stellar projector. For Bluray I would still pick the HT2060 for it’s deeper blacks but for all things 4K it was simply the best I’ve seen at it’s price and you get even more output than the X3000– huge screens welcome. I never reviewed the X500i but every article I read seems to indicate it pairs the contrast/blacks of the HT2060/TH690ST with the HDR tone mapping of the 4550i. That’s a winner in my book. But apparently not in BenQ’s— they swapped the X label on it, equipped it with a Short throw lens and sold it as a gaming projector. Remember how I said large TVs were killing mid range home theater projectors? The X500i as well as the Viewsonic X series models are my chalk outline. These SHOULD have longer lenses and SHOULD be sold as bargain HT models with premium performance. But the manufacturers felt the need to slap the ‘gamer’ label on them. No faith to seek them to the HT crowd who, they must assume, have either moved WAY up market or have given up and bought a large flat panel. Pisses me off. I want a solid state 4K projector with good contrast, good HDR tone mapping and a little bit of flexibility in the lens (1.3X zoom and a 10% vertical lens shift is perfect). I don’t need a ton of lumens as I have a blacked out room. I want to pay around $2K. The X500i would be perfect with a different lens. I love love love love the 4550i but it’s $3000 and overkill for my 100” screen. The X3100i is nice— but I want better contrast/blacks. Epson has abandoned this price category and is still hawking the aging lamp based 3800 and the hilariously old 4010. Optoma has nothing in the range. Sony algae abandoned the mid/low price tiers. JVC was never there. It sucks. It really does feel I’m being pushed to buy a big Tv. And then there’s the w2720i. Super curious on this one as it might determine my next display purchase and if I abandon front projection in the cinema.

r/projectors · BenQ X3000i and X3100i May Have Better Black Levels Than Realized First of all...its not getting brighter as you pull back. Its getting dimmer. Zoom is included in that. It's like when you zoom in on a flashlight. The smaller the light, the brighter it gets. So, BenQ and Epson have ruled the land for the masses for many years with projectors. Over the decades theyve listened to the consumer and brightness has been king. I think that was our mistake but, another conversation. You said they are 3,000 + lumen projectors. Thats a shtload of brightness. And...its false. Correct me if Im wrong but isnt it the case that while theyll get super bright, no one uses them on their brightest setting? I know Ive read with several models that was the case. Like...unusable setting its so bright. But I know, even on the lower setting its still nice and bright. Therin lies the issue with the blacks. The more light youre shining at the screen, the harder it is for blacks to be black. Plus....what color is your screen? You said raw white correct? Well? How can the absense of light on white ever be black? Thats why they came out with grey screens. With grey you achieve better blacks...better contrast. They make blacks screens too. What you have is...whites have most vibrant color. Grey has the better blacks and contrast but you give up some color pop (unnoticeable to many). Black screens have even better blacks and contrast but color suffers even more. Light conditions come into play. But hey. Try something. Reprogram your brain. Turn your brightness down a good bit. See what you see. Colors should pop more. Appear fuller. You should notice more separation. My point is, these arent tvs with the guts right behind the screen. Theyre projecting a huge image 10 feet away. Theres a brightness trade off for size. Turning your brightness down should improve the blacks too.
r/projectors · BenQ X3000i and X3100i May Have Better Black Levels Than Realized OK, well I read your reply carefully and Im glad you were atleast mildly entertained cos it looks like I wasnt much help. But I might be able to make it up to you. I'm referring you to the ultimate guru of projector testing. He runs The Hook Up channel. you may have seen him. Just so happens hes active on AVS forum and he replies very regularly to people. And it looks like he replied to someone on there one hour ago. Here. Good luck to you. [https://www.avsforum.com/members/smarthomehookup.9662622/](https://www.avsforum.com/members/smarthomehookup.9662622/) Oh his name is Rob. I'm not suggesting to call him that. Seems few people know his name. So, seems youre onto something exciting cos I have to admit your pics are surprisingly good. Its no surprise I came into this subreddit a year ago seemingly the only guy who wasnt a fan of Epson and BenQ. And my comment karma barely survived. If the "Cheap Chinese Junk" brands I was promoting early on hadnt came up big with the innovation and quality I probably woulda been killed off long ago. And I gotta tell ya, I'm not sure which one you have...but I looked into the X3000i a lot what was it...I guess a year or more ago. And its the only model of theirs Ive ever recommended. For gamers they really hit it out of the park. And if I remember there wasnt much to complain about. Was the X3100i a worthy follow up? Or did they blow it more or less? Wont be surprised if its the latter.

r/projectors · Is the Benq x3100i still considered the best 4K gaming pj? One thing I would add is to make sure your room has the dimensions necessary to support the throw distance of the projector. To run a X500i in my setup, it would have to be floating in the middle of the room; my X3000i, however, sits comfortably behind my couch.

r/projectors · Basement home theater recommendations. I have an x3000i which is pretty similar to the x3100i. I like it a lot and it’s great for gaming if you’re into that. The one thing I wish it had was a physical lens shift instead of solely relying on keystoning. It can make the install and alignment process a bit more of a hassle. Although don’t be too intimidated by that if it’s just going to sit in one place, I’m not handy at all and figured it out.

r/projectors · Best bang for buck 4k projector over 3000lm, 120" at 12'? Everyone's giving some great recommendations, and your comment describing the differences is \*super\* helpful. The 4LED engine is really why the X3000i made it on this list in the first place. I've had a bit of trouble finding good contrast specs on a lot of projectors, and have never been sure how much of a difference I'd notice. I originally had the Epson 3800 on my list, but the lack of true 4k compared to the others pushed it back down the list. I've got a ceiling fan above and primary walkway below in the way of using anything short throw, so I think the X500i is out - though it looks pretty good otherwise. My only hesitation on the TK710 has been my failure to find a refurbished unit for sale somewhere. Thanks a lot! I'd welcome more suggestions and comments, and in the meantime I'll start looking for a good deal on the TK710! :)

r/projectors · Need suggestion for buying projector. The 3000 and 3100 are very similar overall. The placement of the two models is a fair bit different as the 3000 doesn't have any lens shift and is more limited in how it can be placed. For optimal gaming results, you really can't use any keystone correction at all, so plan for exact placement on either model. The open box does seem like a good deal and both models use the larger .65" DLP chip which is a really good thing IMO. The TK710 is worth considering as well. At this time I don't think there has been any real head to head between the TK710 and the X3100i so I'm super anxious to see how those compare to each other. Frankly, I think both are really solid choices.

That looks like stuck pixels/mirrors, i had it happen on my x3000i, had to send it in to get the dlp chip replaced, so send it back. I do like mine though, good for gaming, and has the 3D functionality that i use a bit. Blacks are ok, but will never be as good as a 3LCD projector. I think DLP is good for fast paced gaming, and 3LCD is better for movies/contrast
Resolution and framerate wont matter on size, your limit would be room dimensions and brightness, i have the x3000i and run a 120" screen in a light controlled room, on a 1.3 gain screen, i feel up to a 150" is fine, maybe 150" to 200" would still be ok, then above 200" might start getting dim even in a dark room. You can use the projector central calculator to compare sizes and see the brightness below (projector distance/using zoom can affect brightness as well even at same size screen).
