The W2720 is NOT too "dim" for "only" 120" Screen Size. The Cinegrey 3D is your best Option then to get an even brighter Picture without "destroying" your Blacks. Even up to 135" I would pair the W2720 and of course the W4100 (up to 150" then) with a 0.95 Gain Grey Screen to improve the Blacks and the perceived Contrast. I believe you will never be happy with HDR on a Projector.

r/projectors · Upgrading from Epson HC 2100 I’ve seen the actual performance of the W4100i — it was projected at a size of 150 inches, which is huge. Thanks to its Dynamic Tone Mapping feature, its performance was truly impressive. Although its blacks can’t reach the same depth as JVC’s, it’s already the highest level achievable for a DLP projector. What stands out most is that bright areas aren’t overexposed, and the gradation is very clear. For example, in the opening airplane hijacking scene of *The Dark Knight Rises*, you can clearly see the layers of clouds in the sky, the texture of the aircraft’s surface, and the facial shadows are vivid and three-dimensional. That’s why the W4100i is definitely worth getting.

Although it doesn’t have Dolby Vision, I compared it at a friend’s house. The W4100i’s dynamic tone mapping produces a picture that rivals projectors with Dolby Vision, but with overall higher visual brightness. I was very surprised to find that I experienced way less RBE on the W4100i. I have previously seen the W2720i and according to my memory RBE was much more pronounced. If you care about 3D though, RBE was pretty bad with 3D on W4100i. I'm not sure how Benq managed to achieve this, I am not aware of any RBE reduction tech built in?

r/projectors · Advice on buying a projector None of those projectors have native 4k resolution The cheapest projector which is a very good option that is native 4k is the Sony VPL-HW 5000ES. I would not recommend it right now due to panel degradation and manual controls at that expensive price point. For a $3,000 price point, don't buy projectors like the Hisense or short throws that have no lens shift. Keystone is BAD IF and only IF your ceilings are at a good height where this projector won't hang too low, then go for the XGIMI Horizon 20 MAX. Also if you plan to place it on a table/not mount it this is a good option. If you don't want that, the number 1 projector I am recommending due to the deal right now is the Epson LS11000. I can't justify why the LS12000 (Slightly upgraded model), is so expensive. Nevertheless, the LS11000 is a great projector with lots of flexibility and at a decently decreased price point NEVER utter the words Optoma lol The newer version of the HT4550i is the W4100i. I like Benq for Home theater, but the fan noise is quite high. I would NOT spend $3000 on the W4100i, instead a GREAT option would be to buy the $1,300 refurb HT4550i from Ebay. This is the best bang-for-your-buck option and is amazing Again, projector lens shift is SO useful, so the only Valerion I would consider would be the MAX 99.99999999% of home theater projectors can project 120 inches +, that is not a good question. The other percent is a cardboard toy. Even the cheapest projectors can probably do 150 if all lights are off I don't like ultra short throw, my opinion is that you will regret if you buy it. Many things need to be perfect for it to work out well. $1,300 refurb HT4550i from Ebay would be the best option as it has 3d support and is very affordable so you can put budget elsewhere If your space permits, then you could go for the XGIMI, but I wouldn't because for half the price I can get a projector that's as good or better refurbished. Consider the Benq W2720i also but I wouldn't go with it

I come from a 1080p Optoma with none of these options. First movie I watched was F1 and I constantly felt it looked a bit dark or shady. But I have to be honest maybe this is how it’s intended to look? I have nothing as a reference or even anyone to discuss this with in my theater room. When you say “I believe you will never be happy either HDR on a projector” do you mean specifically me because of my statement about dimness or anyone in general? Just to be clear, I am trying to get some advice here and not stating facts. The “dimness” is just an impression I had which might be living in my head. Thank you for your advice though.

It’s actually not HDR that is bothering me. It’s the actually WCG which shifts in front of my lens lowering my light output. In some movies this is fine in other this is highly noticeable and causes sunny lightened scenes to look as if looking to a sunglass.

r/projectors · Return BenQ w2720i for BenQ w4100i? Light brightness difference of 10% is not really noticeable by the human eye. Many projectors can't even get 90% brightness uniformity across their entire screen. So, the brightness is not going to be seriously obvious. Maybe a tiny bit better.
r/projectors · Return BenQ w2720i for BenQ w4100i? If it is within budget, I would do so. Every day of the week. The larger chip is something I firmly believe is worth it by itself. I think manufacturers and Texas Instruments have figured out the .47" chip, but it still has had a fairly high failure rate over the years. But, the .65" DLP chip I think is better overall. Better contrast, better longevity. The throw distance on the 4100i is a little bit longer, so the projector may need to be slightly back from the current location. The added lens shift of the 4100i is REALLY nice for setting things up.

r/projectors · Best projector (movies & gaming) for mixed use room under $3k? My buddy has this and I picked up the horizon 20 pro. The colours and contrast in the benq look better than my H20 Pro imo. However H20 Pro is on a gimbal and has been perfect for my FPS and fighting game gaming (which requires high refresh/frame rate and no lag). Have not tried benq for gaming but I think that it's likely better for movies than hardcore competitive gaming. Gaming at 130" is too addictive though don't do it!!! :P

r/projectors · Which projector for living room Honestly? The Valerion Pro2 is exactly what I'd recommend for you. It's RTINGS #1 for a reason. Great for movies, good enough for casual gaming, and with blackout curtains you'll be fine during the day. Ceiling mount works perfectly with it. At $2000-3000, the only real alternative is the BenQ W4100i, cheaper, still great, but not as good contrast for dark room movies. I'd grab the Pro2 and not look back. r/projectors · Keep my BenQ HT3550 or buy XGIMI Horizon 20 Pro? You need more lumens. The good news is just about anything will be brighter than the HT3550. That projector was excellent in its day but even in its day it was known for being dim. Real world you’d be lucky to get 1000 lumens from that projector. Btw, 1000 real world lumens is a lot. The issue is all these manufacturers embellish their lumen spec. Example: the BenQ W4100i I reviewed recently is fabulously bright. Bright is 1700-1800 lumens. BenQ rates the 4100i at 3200 lumens. That number is nonsense. Unfortunately since everyone is fibbing you can’t very well say your projector is 1800 lumens because then no one will buy it. They’ll buy the ‘4000’ lumens projector that only actually puts out 1300 lumens in a color accurate mode. Fun fact: this is why as soon as you get to the expensive projectors like the Sony 5000ES and JVC NZ500 the lumen rating suddenly decrease. It’s not that these are in any way dimmer— it’s just the higher end gear is more realistic about their specs. :)

Instead, our perception is logarithmic. A 2000 lumen bulb will not appear twice as bright as a 1000 lumen bulb. For that you’d need a bulb of around 4000 lumens. The same works the other way. There’s also the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch which explains how our eyes perceive highly saturated color as being very bright. This is a benefit of the RGB laser system employed by the Lg. All this is to say the LG is not dim. Now, I’m not saying that this thing is a light canon— far from it. I have a BenQ W4100i in my basement and that projector would qualify as such. But as long as you’re not trying to run an enormous screen the LG has plenty of output. LG advertises a 100” max screen size and I found that, for our use, a screen of around 85” is the sweet spot for getting a big image that is also bright enough to compete with some ambient light. At 100” you’ll really want the room to be dark not dim.

r/BenQ · BenQ W4100i 4K/3200lm/100% DCI-P3 Home Cinema Projector Review The click is the sound of the color filter snapping into place. That’s normal and GOOD as it means it’s working. In HDR you can adjust whether the filter engages or not by navigating to the picture menu, advanced picture settings, wide color gamut: on/off. When you watch 3D are you using DLP link glasses? Have you had a DLP projector before? The green is normal as that is what signals the DLP link glasses to switch eyes. The DLP link system works on a pulse or flash that is used to synchronize the glasses with the display. The flash can be any color— sometimes it’s red, I even had a DLP back when that used ‘brilliant color’ and synched on yellow— but most of the time it’s green. When you enable the glasses they should filter out the green tint and the image should look normal. If not it could be an issue with your glasses.

r/hometheater · Epson 5050UB or no? For what you paid this is a fantastic deal. At its retail price of $3300 I would not recommend. The motorized lens is amazing and this still has some of the best contrast at its price point. The problem is: it’s 6 years old. In tech that’s a lifetime. It’s still using lamps, it’s not true 4K, it’s HDR tone mapping is several generations behind at this point. Hell— it doesn’t even switch to HDR automatically. At this point for $3000+ you can do a better. The BenQ W4100i is $3000 and has 2 way lens shift. It’s a manual lens not motorized but the BenQ has a solid state 4LED light source, HDMI 2.1 with ALLM, true 4K resolution, dynamic tone mapping for HDR and even features Android TV built in. I’m using one now and despite the lack of iris (blacks can’t get as black) it still has the better image owing to that HDR tone mapping. Then there’s the new Xgimi Horizon Max. Also available for $3000. Reviews are limited right now to a handful of influencers but the buzz is super positive. This model has motorized 2 way lens shift and a fairly insane lumen rating of 5700 from a tri-laser light engine (doubt that’s usable lumens but it’s still going to be a light canon in it’s usable modes). It’s basically a full fat home theater projector masquerading as a lifestyle projector complete with built in sound system and google Tv.
r/projectors · Upgrading from BenQ HT2050A after 4,000 hours — Need advice on next projector For 100” screen you don’t need a lot of lumens. I’ve also reviewed the W2720i and it’s still hanging in my theater. I would say it’s 3/4 of a W4100i. So a little less lumen output (though it will still muscle a 100” screen), a little less contrast, a little less color gamut. Though it’s actually sharper than the W4100i by a hair. It’s effectively the replacement for the HT3560– but being 4LED it’s a lot brighter and more colorful than that model. It would be a definite upgrade from the HT2050A. Also, I see you’re worried about fan noise— the 2720i is very quiet. If you want to save even more I would also recommend looking at the X500i as it is essentially the 4K version of the HT2060 which replaced the 2050A. Don’t let the ‘gamer’ moniker fool you it’s a fine cinema projector. It has really good contrast but is a bit dimmer than the 2720i. Still, will be more than sufficient for a 100” screen. Negatives is it’s short throw only and no lens shift which is a bummer. The chassis is also a little louder than the 2720i especially on high lamp mode.

The W4100i is not only here to fix the prior issues but represents a surprisingly significant improvement in PQ despite being largely the same light engine as the outgoing model. My verdict: On balance, I believe the W4100i may just be the best projector BenQ has yet produced. Whether you are looking for an affordable solution for a dedicated home cinema or something bright enough and compact enough to work in a more casual living space the W4100i has you covered. For small to medium sized rooms the W4100i produces ample light output. It packs a worry-free LED light engine that is both vibrant and easy-on-the-eyes. It features excellent color and some of the best projector HDR I've seen. It's image is sharp and detailed with a high degree of motion clarity. It's a top tier gaming display-- ditto for 3D. And it's generously equipped with 4-way lens shift and zoom at a price point where such features are vanishingly rare. In short, the W4100i represents excellent value and earns my enthusiastic recommendation! Erik’s verdict: Wrapping things up, the BenQ W4100i builds on what made the W4000i / HT4550 such a great projector. I’ll say I normally despise dynamic contrast modes— including the old Smarteco from BenQ and the Enhanced Black Level on the new Valerian. but I find Low dynamic very effective with a minimum of color shift— measurable but not visible in my case. r/BenQ · BenQ W4100i 4K/3200lm/100% DCI-P3 Home Cinema Projector Review I have not reviewed the Pro2 but I got to spend time with one. The Valerion is even brighter still and covers nearly all of the REC.2020 colorspace— which is mighty impressive. It also has higher measured contrast. On the flip side it is not as color accurate, its dynamic contrast system introduces noticeable color shifts, and it has very limited optical flexibility forcing you to rely on keystone. To be fair though it IS a lifestyle unit and, despite its premium price, more aimed at folks who just want a quick to setup and quick to take down projector. While the W4100i is similar in size and weight (obviously different in shape) it is more designed for folks that want to mount their projector to target a fixed screen. In addition there are significant differences in the light engine. The Valerion uses the .47” DMD paired with a tri laser light source. The BenQ utilizes a 4LED light source paired with the larger .65” DMD. With tri laser some folks will notice laser speckle depending on screen pairing. I also noticed more RBE with that unit but that could be down to the added brightness. Like most all .47” DLPs the Valerion can exhibit screen door effect. The .65” utilized here exhibits no SDE in 4K.

So far, there have been no crashes on my unit. I’m still getting over the trauma of using a W4000i for over a year; every time I switch media sources, I expect it to crash. My nervous system will eventually readjust to things actually working. I’m disappointed I didn’t get a straight swap of my faulty W4000i for the new W4100i, as I had to make up some of the cost myself. Having used the 4100 for a few days, the biggest difference for me isn’t the new features, it’s simply that it just works, the way the 4000 should have.

r/projectors · Talk me out of the BenQ W4100i For anyone interested: I got the projector set up over the weekend and have watched 3 movies on it and some 4k demo material The Good: \- 4k Pixel Shifting is a big improvement over 1080p. From where I sit, I was just on the edge of screen door on my 120" screen with 1080p. With the 4k I have to be right up close to the screen (like inches away) to see the individual pixels. \- The colors are amazing, and I believe the reviews that say they're the most accurate out of the box. It's a really noticeable difference compared to the 8700ub on 4k demo material. \- The additional brightness over the 8700ub, while not required in my case since I have a dedicated room, is very welcome. It really makes the image pop off the screen. \- The LED light source over bulb is a big win. The Bad: \- I was expecting worse black levels compared to the 8700UB but holy cow they're a big step back. If you're looking at upgrading/purchasing a screen at the same time I would highly recommend a 0.8 gain silver screen to help with black levels. I just bought a new white one for the Epson so I'm stuck with what i have for now. For me it's really bad when showing 2.35:1 movies, so I built some masks to black out the bars and have it's way better. If you don't have a silver screen, this would be required IMO. \- I had a DLP with a 2x color wheel like 20 years ago and I saw lots of rainbows back then. I was hoping with a solid state light source and no color wheel I wouldn't see them any more, but I still do. Mostly on text though so it's not a deal breaker for me. \- It's a bit louder than my 8700ub and because it has a shorter throw distance, it's now sitting directly over my head. \- There is significant light spill out the front of the projector and up onto the ceiling. I'll probably end up putting some light absorbing fabric on the ceiling to fix this. \- The streaming stick isn't great, it's a bit laggy - especially when displaying 4k content. Overall I am happy with the projector. It looks amazing 85% of the time, and acceptable for the other 15%. I toyed with the idea of returning it and getting a refurbed 5050UB, but I've decided to keep it. The worse black levels and occasional rainbows on title screens aren't enough to outweigh the fact that the 5050ub is still lamp based.

Unfortunately, I’ve been experiencing random reboots. I followed all the recommended suggestions, but the issue hasn’t improved. I still have my reliable W1070, but I’ve lost confidence in this new model. At this point, I’m leaning toward switching to a different brand, even if it means spending more.

Benq knows this and made special cover that reduce this light spil. I live in Poland and also have W4100i. My unit has the same problem. Last week I made warranty claim and they will send mi this part. Btw, how good focus uniformity has yours W4100i? In mine, when I set good focus on most screen area, the left upper corner has a little weaker focus. It’s visible on text, that looks like letters has some glow? Hard to describe. I try to play with it. But also considering to make a warranty claim for this.

This means that with the lens shift dial set to its neutral midpoint, the center of the lens aligns perfectly with the horizontal center of the image. The 60% figure refers to the total vertical travel range. Because the starting point is the center of the image, you have 30% up and 30% down from that center line. If your goal is to drop the screen significantly below the ceiling line without a physical lift, the W4100i might be tighter than you expected. If you need a significant drop from a high soffit, you may need to look at an Epson Home Cinema 5050UB or LS12000, which offer much more aggressive vertical shift (up to 96%). If you stay with the BenQ, you will likely need a mount that drops the projector closer to the top of the desired screen height.

Main tradeoff: * W4100i → better blacks / dark-room cinema * TK705i → brighter, more versatile living-room projector Since you mentioned sports, hanging out with friends, and some ambient light, I honestly think the TK705i may fit your actual usage better. Plus it already has Google TV + licensed Netflix built in.

r/projectors · Return BenQ w2720i for BenQ w4100i? main difference is brightness, lens shift, max screen size and input lag. if you're no heavy gamer, and your room is pitch black as you write, your screen isn't >200" and the position of the projector is already fine without extra lens shift... I would save my money, because then it's just a very small upgrade for a rather steep price.

r/projectors · BenQ w4100i lens shift Do you mean that when it is placed on the sideboard the \*bottom\* of the image is below the lens, or that the \*centre\* of the image is also below the lens? If my theory is correct then when you mount it upside down on the ceiling and use the \*maximum\* vertical lens shift, the top of the image will be 10% below the lens (about 14cm in your case). If you leave the lens shift in the middle I’d expect the top of the image to be \*quite far above\* the lens. Does this sound accurate?

Both the specs and the manual expressly say it is not 30/30 but 0/60, with a diagram on page 19 showing the 60% is only in one direction. But the manual also says on page 16: “The vertical offset value is the vertical distance from the bottom edge of the image (when the projector is placed on a table, diagram on the left), or top edge of the image (when the projector is ceiling mounted, diagram on the right) to the centerline of lens.” It has a table showing that at 120” (1494mm height) the offset is 149mm, so 10% not 0%. With a bit of maths then it’s possible to conclude that they can be correct if they are “flipped”. As in, if you start with the centre of the image at the exact lens centre line and then use the “full” 0.6V in one direction as shown in the diagram on p19 (down from the from the ceiling) then you arrive at the “native offset” of 0.1V shown on p16. But this is different to what you’re saying, which would mean you can never get the top of the image below the lens.

I’ve been trying a ton of different hdmi configurations and nothing is checking all the boxes. 4100i (hdmi2 earc) > earc soundbar port 4100i (hdmi 1 or 3) > Panasonic ub820 I have other sources that I’m using a switch with, so the hdmi config is a little limited. If I go hdmi1 on the soundbar to the player, earc soundbar to earc projector, I get trueHD, but then I get tons of dropout and audio confusion. The cables are 48gb, the switch is 48gb. I’ve tried using an audio extractor, but then i lose cec control over the soundbar. I guess the real question is: is anybody using the earc port to successfully get TrueHD pass through on the 4100i?

r/projectors · Benq W4100i vs Valerian visionmaster pro 2 BenQ sent me the W4100i because I had the previous model that had so many issues they gave it to me for free. Theres a weird issue where the light source will shift color temperatures for a flicker and go back. you can force this by chaning the volume on an AVR, it's weird and annoying. The W4100i is bright, really bright it's great, but the black levels are lacking what they could be. Also the Visionmaster pro 2 always goes on sale for $2,400 which is much cheaper than the BenQ. I like the BenQ but it's not better than the Visionmaster and it's more expensive.

If I use either of those it’s almost like the color temperature flickers throughout a scene. I know you mentioned yours doesn’t do that but this is happening to mine and it’s distracting and common enough that I can’t use those settings at all.

I just can’t get a good handle on how much if any improvement in contrast and black levels I could expect. Reviewers constantly seem to downplay or gloss over these specific metrics. But the w4100i looks very appealing and on sale in Canada right now approx $900 off. I’m sure people will say valerion pro 2 is better but I’m not convinced - although I haven’t seen either in the wild. TLDR I have nothing to add but interested in the responses.

About 3d, I had Benq TH585 before and I did not see that it's turning into green on it when playing 3d movies but I could see it's turning into green and taking sometime to show the image on the screen. You are right that when I am wearing DLP glasses, the green color disappears and o distraction at all. Is there a way to remove the green color thing in settings? Could you also please share good settings for 3d mode?

Is it normal behavior or is it an issue? another thing I noticed is, I play 3d files using my Raspberry Pi 3B+. The screen is turning into Green color in 3d mode. My Rpi has HDMI 1.4. is it because the 3d signal is passing from HDMI 1.4 to 2.1 in W4100i? Can someone help me to understand this, please?

It will also allow you to make the pole shorter and mount the projector closer to the ceiling. Source: I have an almost identical setup and swapped in the HT4550i which has the same specs aa the w4100i. Spend the extra $500. Easily worth it. The Xgimi is a lifestyle projector with limited lens shift which suck to mount without using keystone which ruins the picture. You are doing a traditional installation which the BenQ is made for.

Also unlike current gen lifestyle projectors this has the larger 0.65mm dmd so should last longer. I am running at home, it's really bright enough to manage in a room during daylight (and I am straight up projecting on a wall, not a special screen).

Oui exactement c'est le nouveau BenQ w4100i qui me fait de l'œil justement. Comme c'est un projecteur LED il y a 0 laser speckle. Par contre il peut y avoir du dithering mais je ne sais pas à quel point comme ca dépend aussi de la toile je ne sais pas si ca va bien avec une black crystal. J'imagine que c'est plus ou moins comme les autres BenQ lifestyle (w4000i, x3000i, x3100i,...) mais je ne trouve pas trop dinfo sur ceux qu'ils donnent avec une toile black ceystal
