r/reolinkcam · Feeling misled when using Magicam with Home Hub Pro

You shouldn't feel misled, it's right on the product page that it can only do motion event recording to a Hub: [https://i.vgy.me/vrxMhB.png](https://i.vgy.me/vrxMhB.png) It's even mentioned in the FAQ on its product page: [https://i.vgy.me/VP4AuV.png](https://i.vgy.me/VP4AuV.png) Maybe you feel disappointed by its features, and that's fair, but you can't say you've been misled just because you made assumptions and didn't research it enough before buying. You make it sound like it's a conspiracy to sell more SD cards. Very few people buy their SD cards directly from Reolink. In fact, they don't even sell cards as large as 512GB. So they have nothing to gain by trying to force people to buy SD cards. If anything they would want to sell more Hubs and NVRs. I suspect the MagiCam not being able to record 24/7 over wifi is more a limitation of the new low-power Qualcomm wifi chips they're using in these newer power efficient cameras: [https://i.vgy.me/ulU9gb.png](https://i.vgy.me/ulU9gb.png) Also, why are you posting here under 2 different accounts, u/Novel-Pumpkin7476?

r/reolinkcam · Too many Unanswered Questions on Home Hub Pro + Battery Cameras/Doorbells (Wired Mode)

I can answer most of your questions... **1 -** No you can't. MagiCam: This can only record 24/7 to its SD card, not to a Hub or NVR: [https://i.vgy.me/vrxMhB.png](https://i.vgy.me/vrxMhB.png) Battery doorbell: The 1st gen battery doorbell, which came out about 2-3 years ago, cannot record 24/7 period. When it's connected to doorbell wiring for power that's just trickle charging the battery, it's not powering the camera directly. Where things get confusing is there is now a 2nd gen version of that doorbell that just came out a few weeks ago. It's not even on their own website yet, but it is on Amazon: [https://www.amazon.com/REOLINK-Video-Doorbell-150%C2%B0x150%C2%B0-Detection/dp/B0FJDRFFQ6](https://www.amazon.com/REOLINK-Video-Doorbell-150%C2%B0x150%C2%B0-Detection/dp/B0FJDRFFQ6) I suspect this was just a soft launch and the real launch will be in the coming months. Now the specs of that say when connected to power it can record continuously. However, it seems that will require a power kit that isn't even available yet. See here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/comments/1u826ty/battery\_doorbell\_gen\_2\_be\_aware\_you\_need\_power/](https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/comments/1u826ty/battery_doorbell_gen_2_be_aware_you_need_power/) Now if you were wanting a doorbell that's wifi, can be powered by doorbell wiring, and can record 24/7 you could have gotten the non-battery wired/wifi doorbell: [https://reolink.com/product/reolink-video-doorbell-wifi/](https://reolink.com/product/reolink-video-doorbell-wifi/) **2 -** I know with the battery doorbell it will time out after so many minutes. I forget exactly what it is, I want to say 5 minutes. That's how all their battery cameras work. I haven't tested it with the MagiCam, but I assume it will work the same way. Basically, if you want live viewing and you have access to power you shouldn't be using battery cameras. If you're wanting the MagiCam because it's small, I'd recommend getting the Lumus or Lumus Pro instead, they're not much bigger and will be much better video quality. **3 -** *"I read in the MagiCam FAQ on Reolink's website that in order to obtain an RTSP stream, the MagiCam must first be paired with a Home Hub series device"* I just wanted to point out that this is true of all their battery cams, not just the MagiCam. And that it could also be an NVR, doesn't have to be a Hub specifically. **3a -** I can't find it now, but I'm certain I remember seeing that their cameras/NVRs/Hubs can support up to 2 main RTSP streams and something like 10 sub streams. In this case the MagiCam doesn't have two streams, so it's a question of whether the Hub considers the cam's single stream a main stream or a sub stream. I don't have a Hub Pro, but I do have the base Hub and a MagiCam added to it, so I tested it. I was able to open 5 separate RTSP streams successfully in VLC and stream them all for a few minutes. So it must consider them sub streams since they're such a low bit rate. It probably would have let me do more than 5, but I stopped there. **3b -** Only a single stream, the MagiCam only has one stream. **3c -** According to this, no: [https://i.vgy.me/9Y7rOq.png](https://i.vgy.me/9Y7rOq.png) (that's from [here](https://support.reolink.com/articles/900000630706-Introduction-to-RTSP/)). However, I tested this by opening an RTSP stream of my MagiCam in VLC and let it sit. It stayed streaming for 28 minutes before disconnecting. Now I don't know if that was because it hit a built in time limit, or if it just had a network hiccup and lost the stream. I don't have time to keep testing it, sorry. That does bring up a point though... RTSP can be flaky and has no error correction/recovery, so if it disconnects like that you'd have to restart the stream manually. **4a -** Yes. I have the 1st gen battery doorbell connected to doorbell wiring for power and running through my Hub, and I successfully tested both a main stream and a sub stream. **4b -** By the Hub. That's why the Hub is needed to even get an RTSP stream.

I've noticed the battery bar in the app isn't accurate at all, however with both of mine when they started to get low I started getting pop-up notifications any time I opened the app saying that the battery was low. I do also have mine added to HomeAssistant and that tells me an actual percentage that they're at. It's not 100% accurate either, but it gives me a much better gauge than the Reolink app does.

r/reolinkcam · Reolink Argus MagiCam: Practical Use Cases

Again, I don't know yet. That 9 month claim is with lithium batteries and with only 5 minutes of footage per day. Mine with the lithium battery is reporting 82% right now after 5 weeks, so we'll have to wait a while to see. I don't expect it to last 9 months in a real world scenario, of course marketing is going to embellish things like that, every company does that, but I'll be happy with a couple months.

r/reolinkcam · If you are travelling THIS summer, would you consider taking MagiCam with you?

Mine is recording to a Home Hub, so if I'm watching any recordings it's from that. I think you're underestimating AA batteries, especially lithium AA's. That combined with the newer more power efficient battery cameras. The newer ones that use the new Qualcomm chip are more power efficient than the older ones like the A3P: [https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/comments/1q77sk2/reolink\_powerefficient\_seriespowered\_by\_qualcomms/](https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/comments/1q77sk2/reolink_powerefficient_seriespowered_by_qualcomms/)

r/reolinkcam · Any Reolink Argus MagiCam review?

I'll be posting a brief one late next week. Even though they've been available for several weeks now, the "official" release date is June 8th, so I was told to wait until then to post a review. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. I'll give you a general preview of my review: It's a very versatile and useful little camera, I have two and will probably get more because I can think of many uses for them. However, I would never use them as a primary security camera. I say that about all battery cameras, but this even more so due to the low video quality (only 1024Kbps bit rate) and it's slower than other battery cameras when waking up from sleep. It will be great for lots of little non-security projects, or as a supplement to powered cameras.

r/reolinkcam · Solar Panel for Argus MagiCam?

I don't believe it can use one directly because when it's plugged into wall power it's not capable of charging the batteries, so it's safe to assume the same is true of solar power. Now putting a power bank between the two is probably feasible. One thing I was concerned about is if it's plugged into direct power, a power bank in your case, then does the camera stay awake non-stop. If it did then you might have to worry about it draining the power bank. However, I just tested mine by plugging it into power and then watched its sleep/awake status in HomeAssistant, and it does in fact still go to sleep, so that would be good for your situation. That's as long as you have continuous recording off. If you turn that on then of course it would never go to sleep. By the way, regarding the battery life, I'm in the middle of running battery drain tests with different types of batteries. My first test was with NiMH rechargeables and it lasted about 12 days. I'm now in the middle of testing regular old alkaline batteries and they're looking about the same, maybe a little bit less. This testing is with about 30-40 motion triggers per day on average. Next I'm going to test lithium batteries (Energizer Ultimate Lithium), which I'm sure is how they get the 9 month claim, but even then that's probably with only a few triggers per day.

r/reolinkcam · Argus Magicam now available at $57

I just got mine today. Yes, it can record to an NVR, but not 24/7, only motion. That's the same whether running off of battery or plugged in. Same thing goes with the Home Hub. It can only record 24/7 to SD card.

r/reolinkcam · Argus MagiCam just listed on site, not available yet though

Oh! I missed that! Nice find once again. That's the first time they've ever done that with a battery camera. That's pretty awesome, I may be getting more of these than I originally thought. EDIT: Here's their article on how power modes work on it: [https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/52800140962969-Learn-How-Reolink-Power-Modes-Work/](https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/52800140962969-Learn-How-Reolink-Power-Modes-Work/)

r/reolinkcam · Reolink Argus MagiCam: Practical Use Cases

Depends on what type of battery you're using. In my testing alkalines and rechargeable Ni-MH batteries lasted about 3 weeks. Lithium batteries last much longer, but I don't know exactly how long because they haven't died yet. They're at about 5 weeks so far.

r/reolinkcam · If you are travelling THIS summer, would you consider taking MagiCam with you?

You clearly haven't done any research on the Magicam. You seem to be disregarding it just because it uses AA's. Meanwhile I've been putting 2 of them through battery drain testing for a couple months. Rechargeable Ni-MH AA's have lasted about 3 weeks for me, and using lithium batteries I'm not sure how long it's going to last because it hasn't died yet. Right now the battery is at 82% after 5 weeks. For traveling I'd rather take the Magicam because it's smaller, and if my purpose is for leaving it in the hotel room while away, it's not going to be getting used very much or generating any alerts, so the battery draining isn't a concern. Plus if I plug it in I can do 24/7 recording. The Argus 3 Pro can't do that.

    r/reolinkcam · Unboxing Reolink MagiCam

I don't think it's an oversight, they clearly meant to do it this way. I would assume it's for power saving reasons. They obviously want this power-efficient line of cameras with the Qualcomm CPU to last a long time so they probably found that not having the CPU process for animals and vehicles every time there's motion saves a certain percentage of power.

    >They could have designed it to use two Eneloop batteries It can use rechargeable batteries. I have Eneloops in one of mine in fact. It just can't charge them while in the camera. It can use alkaline, rechargeable NiMh, and lithium. Lithium give the longest performance.

r/reolinkcam · Any Reolink Argus MagiCam review?

No, you can't use a solar panel on the Magicam. When you attach a solar panel to a battery camera it doesn't power the camera directly, it's trickle charging the camera's battery. Remember that this runs off of 2 household AA batteries, not a Li-ion battery pack like the rest of their battery cameras do. The Magicam doesn't have the capability to charge AA batteries, which is essentially what the solar panel would be attempting to do.

Even without testing it I can tell you things at 4" are going to be blurry and out of focus unless you put a macro lens adapter over its lens. I know I'm stating the obvious here, but these are security cameras, so they're meant for viewing things at the very minimum a few feet away. The only way around that is to get a camera that has manual focus (which would be any of their cameras with optical zoom) or to add a macro lens. I made a Reolink bird feeder and found that even the manual focus wasn't quite enough, I still needed the macro lens also: [https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/comments/1foffdp/i\_made\_a\_reolink\_bird\_feeder\_camera/](https://www.reddit.com/r/reolinkcam/comments/1foffdp/i_made_a_reolink_bird_feeder_camera/) (You can see a direct comparison about 2/3 of the way down, right above the videos section) ...... Right before I was about to click submit on this comment I got to thinking... I should actually test this just to make sure what I'm saying holds true with this camera. So I just grabbed the closest thing that had text on it (instructions from our new cat litter robot lol) and held it about 4" in front of the Magicam's lens: [https://i.vgy.me/hc3KWp.jpg](https://i.vgy.me/hc3KWp.jpg) Then I remembered I have a spare macro lens adapter from that bird feeder project, so I put that on the Magicam and put that same sheet in front of it: [https://i.vgy.me/UvLRY9.jpg](https://i.vgy.me/UvLRY9.jpg) Side by side: [https://i.vgy.me/XaUJkT.jpg](https://i.vgy.me/XaUJkT.jpg) By the way, the macro lens adapter I'm using is Wyze's: [https://www.amazon.com/Wyze-Macro-Close-Wildlife-Stunning/dp/B0F1Y2VYTH](https://www.amazon.com/Wyze-Macro-Close-Wildlife-Stunning/dp/B0F1Y2VYTH)

It can be added to HA if going through a Hub or NVR, just like all their other battery cameras. It does have a manual record toggle in HA that forces it to start recording, so yes you should be able to trigger that with an automation.

r/reolinkcam · Solar Panel for Argus MagiCam?

Well, it's premature to compare it to the Blink with lithium batteries. Lithium batteries will last much longer than NiMH or alkaline. I just haven't gotten to that test with the Magicam yet. I will say that I won't be using this as a battery camera based off of the tests so far unless the lithium batteries really do last 6 months or more. They're too expensive to be replacing every 1-2 months lol.

Some brands sell their own glass mount brackets and some make 3D printed brackets/covers for cams. You can find them on etsy, makerworld, printables etc. I don't know if any have been made yet for the MagiCam. I have a Blink XT2 cam and put it next to the MagiCam, they are pretty close in size except the MagiCam is thicker. A window mount for Blink cams may work with the MagiCam, you could try one and if it won't work send it back for refund. https://preview.redd.it/z9nbtv5gwzeh1.jpeg?width=1149&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fadaccbfe6ee9bafe031798380d33bb3414e17a8

It would have been better if the MagiCam had more features, what you want. But it's one of Reolink's cheaper cams. Those who are serious about home security could consider saving up and buying the better wire powered models with more features especially for outside use. I have two MagiCams for inside the house, I like how small they are. But I won't use them outside.

Looks kind of messy. Not like the other battery cams. Especially at night I get a lot of animal events tagged as Others on my Argus Eco Ultra and Altas PT Ultra. Appears the Magicam needs some technical tweaks to get its Animal detection improved.

    r/reolinkcam · Unboxing Reolink MagiCam

I was using the description "AA-Battery" from the support link I posted above.. Looking at the app pictures in that support link I see there is a "Battery Type" button. Confusing. I don't have the Magicam so don't know anything. I wouldn't think it matters if the batteries are rechargeable or not when it comes to recording Animal Events in battery mode. Since you have seen some animal detections in battery mode, then the mystery continues.

    r/reolinkcam · Unboxing Reolink MagiCam

Thanks for confirming Animal events are not saved as Animal Events in battery mode. Do you think this was an oversight by Reolink and a firmware update is needed to correct this? I can't think of any technical reason why Reolink would intentionally not save/tag Animal events. Doesn't seem like it would be a big battery saver to leave it out.

    r/reolinkcam · Unboxing Reolink MagiCam

I can't find online where I read Magicam does not support Animal detection when in AA battery mode. Everything I find today suggests Magicam does save Animal detection Events in battery mode, if "Optimal Surveillance Mode" is used as explained in this link. [https://support.reolink.com/articles/50336871527449-Introduction-to-Battery-Mode-on-Reolink-Battery-powered-Cameras/#h\_01KG9MKS9TN9BZYKZBCJ5AJZFW](https://support.reolink.com/articles/50336871527449-Introduction-to-Battery-Mode-on-Reolink-Battery-powered-Cameras/#h_01KG9MKS9TN9BZYKZBCJ5AJZFW) Maybe someone with Magicam can pipe into this thread and confirm if Animal Events are saved in battery mode.

r/reolinkcam · Solar Panel for Argus MagiCam?

Be aware, the MagiCam does not have Animal Detection when powered with the batteries. Animal Detection is only enabled when powered with an AC adapter. But, I would assume powering the cam with a power bank would "trick" it into believing it was in AC mode, and would enable Animal detection. In theory you need a "pass-through" power bank that can power the camera while also being charged. The standard power banks won't except a charge while powering a camera. I have been looking for an affordable pass-through power bank but have not been able to find one. This turn-key solution on Amazon might also work. r/reolinkcam · Argus MagiCam review

I have tested the MagiCam using a 27000 mAh powerbank to see how long it would last on continuous power. According to the spec on the powerbank its 3.7V which means its 99.9 W hours and just falls under the IATA limit for carry-on devices allowed on planes. Anyway, the MagiCam lasted 158 hours on a single PB charge recording continuously to an onboard sdcard which means usage of approx 0.63 watts. Unfortunately the continuous stream cannot be sent to a NVR or HomeHub but rather only to the cameras sdcard. I'm now using rechargeable LION 1.5V batteries which are rated for 3600 mWh. Regular MiMH rechargeable batteries are 1.2V. After 7 days with an average of 20 minutes usage per day according to the battery stats its still showing 100% set to a working mode of "Smart Power Mode". That's very encouraging for extended usage.

Unfortunately you cannot charge them in situ. It can also be run from a USB powerbank which allows continuous operation and that bypasses the internal battery. So strangely enough you can externally power and it will fall back to the internal batteries when the pack runs out of juice. More on that next week.

No, the only battery cameras that support timed recording are the Altas range and the Magicam. The means you use to power the Argus does not affect its capabilities.

If you have a little knowledge of python its possible to use the API that sits behind the Home Assistant Integration to obtain the battery data. [https://github.com/starkillerOG/reolink\_aio](https://github.com/starkillerOG/reolink_aio) After changing the IPAddress, password and channel number, this code will show the data for a NVR or Home Hub attached battery camera. The code runs equally on windows or Linux or I guess on which ever system you have installed python on. #!/usr/bin/env python3 import asyncio, json, sys from reolink_aio.api import Host async def reocmd(): host = Host('192.168.99.99', 'admin', 'password') body = [{"cmd": "GetBatteryInfo", "action": 0, "param": {"channel": 2 }}] resp1 = await host.send(body, expected_response_type="json") print(f"{resp1}") print() resp2 = await host.baichuan.send(cmd_id=253,channel=2) print(f"{resp2}") await host.logout() if __name__ == "__main__": asyncio.run(reocmd()) Produces a report similar to this. You can see the voltage, percentage, etc and in the xml report that this camera is connected to permanent power (DCAdapter). [{'cmd': 'GetBatteryInfo', 'code': 0, 'value': {'Battery': {'adapterStatus': 4, 'batteryPercent': 100, 'batteryVersion': 2, 'chargeStatus': 2, 'current': 0, 'lowPowerFlag': 0, 'temperature': 34, 'voltage': 4077}}}] <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> <body> <BatteryInfo version="1.1"> <channelId>2</channelId> <chargeStatus>chargeComplete</chargeStatus> <adapterStatus>DCAdapter</adapterStatus> <voltage>4077</voltage> <current>0</current> <temperature>34</temperature> <batteryPercent>100</batteryPercent> <lowPower>0</lowPower> <batteryVersion>2</batteryVersion> <superLowPower>0</superLowPower> <powerSupplyStatus>normal</powerSupplyStatus> </BatteryInfo> </body>

    r/reolinkcam · Best battery camera?

The detection range for a battery camera is about 10m/33ft and that may be less than the distance to the shop across the road. You could look at the MagiCam which runs off regular AA sized batteries including NiMH or Lion rechargeable.

r/reolinkcam · Reolink Magicam support RTSP when using AC power plugged?

I have tried a few permutations on the MagiCam to see what happens. Firstly when running on battery power and secondly when externally powered when run standalone and connected to a Home Hub The initial test was just to start viewing the camera using the desktop client. The results were not as I expected. When running the camera standalone, the viewing terminated after 5 minutes independent of being on battery or external power. However when connected to a Home Hub the viewing ceased after 25 minutes, again independent of how the MagiCam was powered. Then I tried the RTSP check to see how long it could stream using VLC on a windows pc. The command I used was rtsp://admin:#redacted#@192.168.99.99/Preview\_03\_main There is no option for a substream, just the main at 1920x1080 at 15 fps with a 1024 kbps bitrate. And of course RTSP is only possible using a Home Hub as an inter mediatory device. On battery, it streamed for 5 minutes and when externally powered 25 minutes. It was fairly consistent as I repeated the VLC stream a few times. From what I can see you cannot stream a MagiCam via VLC 24x7.

r/reolinkcam · Reolink Magicam support RTSP when using AC power plugged?

I'll need to verify on my MagiCam but my understanding looking at the FAQ is its a limitation on the wifi connection between camera and hub/app. It's got nothing to do with RTSP as the camera does not support it. The camera uses the proprietary Baichuan protocol to communicate. Its the Hub that supports RTSP on its output path to VLC/etc. The FAQ says Can I use the camera 24/7? Yes, the camera can be used 24/7 only when it is powered by a cord. But please note that the Wi-Fi feature is restricted in the power-on mode when the camera can't record continuously through a Hub. I read that as 5 minutes in any scenario.

r/reolinkcam · Reolink Magicam support RTSP when using AC power plugged?

[https://reolink.com/us/product/argus-magicam/#faq](https://reolink.com/us/product/argus-magicam/#faq) The MagiCam does not support a continuous stream when powered via the USB-C port. Connecting the camera to power allows it to record 24x7 to its onboard sdcard. Plus the hub mini has other restrictions such as only supporting the fluent stream on 24x7 recording for regular powered cameras. In the case of the MagiCam it only supports a single 1080p resolution, there is no clear/fluent. I can see that I only responded to one of your questions initially and skipped over 24x7. You may be able to do brief 5 minute streams prior to the camera dropping the connection to the hub.

r/reolinkcam · Home Hub and Battery Cams

A camera can connect to a home hub either using the hub's built-in ssid or your home networks ssid. Either work equally well. The choice of which to use is down to signal strength/quality considerations. This is probably truer in a home if you have mesh wifi with multiple access points. However the home hub's ethernet connection must be on the same subnet as cameras running on your home network. The question is not related to the wifi ssid but rather the subnet to which the camera and home hub are connected which should be one and the same. So if your Hub is at home and the camper elsewhere it will not work as the camera cannot see the hub.

    r/reolinkcam · Unboxing Reolink MagiCam

It's a slightly mixed position. Yes, I'm seeing some animal detections but those are tagged together with another detection type. For example a combined "person & animal" whilst the majority of animal only are reported as "other" which does match what mblaser is seeing.

    r/reolinkcam · Unboxing Reolink MagiCam

OK, I'll investigate when I do see the animal detections but its based on the smart detections in the recorded footage rather than live. Although its not as many as I'd expect.

    r/reolinkcam · Unboxing Reolink MagiCam

I'll have to look more closely as I'm seeing some animal detections using rechargeable batteries. So when you say "AA battery" is that using the setting for "AA Alkaline" or "AA non-rechargeable lithium". I am using the "AA NiMH" setting although they are LION using Smart power mode.

r/reolinkcam · Solar Panel for Argus MagiCam?

I may be doing 1 + 1 and getting 3.. but A quick google implies an alkaline AA battery is 1500 to 3000 mAh with niMH rechargeable 1500 or so. There are many powerbanks available that claim 30,000 mAh and I've seen some up to 60,000. You may well find powering the magicam with a large powerbank may offer an extended running period, exactly how long is a bit of a guess I suppose.

r/reolinkcam · Feeling misled when using Magicam with Home Hub Pro

Hes right to feel misled because common sense dictates that if it is powered via ac then it should not function like a battery powered device. However, i understand that includ8ng this capability is not simply a matter of software but instead something that would drive up hardware costs. The magicam was designed to fill a specific niche and its price is optimized for that function. I applaud OP for his post and for others because i almost pulled the trigger on one but stopped once i found out about this "issue". Reolink in general does a terrible job at connecting customers with the right product and does an even worse job have sharing accurate information (there are tons of mistakes in their marketing materials). In short, Reolink didn't actually do anything wrong but they can do better at communicating use cases, capabilities, and managing customer expectations. They offer amazing value which is maybe why they are weaker on customer service

Great review! I got the MagiCam because it's perfect for our use case. We do a lot of long road trips, and we always take our dog with us. Since we mainly stay in hotels, we wanted to check on our dog when we're not able to take him out for an adventure or to a restaurant. Since it will be powered and connected to our travel router, we'll at least be able to check on him for our peace of mind (though we believe he's usually just sleeping on the bed).

r/reolinkcam · Too many Unanswered Questions on Home Hub Pro + Battery Cameras/Doorbells (Wired Mode)

Regarding your answer to Question #1: Wow, this is honestly very disappointing, and I believe many people—including myself—will feel the same way. I can completely understand your explanation that the Battery Doorbell only uses the 24V hardwired connection to charge the battery rather than operating as a true plug-in doorbell. However, the MagiCam is a different story. It can operate perfectly without the two rechargeable batteries installed, as long as it is powered by an AC adapter. That clearly means the MagiCam is fully capable of functioning as a plug-in camera, just like the Reolink Lumus Pro. Because of that, it seems that Reolink has intentionally disabled the ability for the MagiCam to save 24/7 continuous recording footage to the Home Hub series. As a result, users are forced to purchase additional microSD cards for each camera. In my case, spending a significant amount of money on the Home Hub Pro turned out to be a mistake because it doesn't provide the functionality I was expecting or actually need.

r/reolinkcam · Reolink Argus MagiCam: Practical Use Cases

Since I cant make a thread due to low karma (sorry, I dont toe the reddit line politically) I'll post my magic cam thoughts here, well it really is GREAT at its use case. It's like a blink with multiple HUGE improvements, for me anyway some people may for example not care about a PC client, but for me it's HUGE. each one placing it far above blink by itself but when combined it's not even close \-no requiring a sub for human detection (essentially making Blink useless without a sub) \-A dedicated PC client (Blink has none) \-No sync module required. They are annoying. \-The option for wired or wireless \-Cheaper price too, at least as far as I can tell. altho Blink may have some 4 for one specials right now during prime days etc that bring the per camera cost below magicam. Most of the time that I saw a single blink cam was significantly more expensive than a single magic cam. \-5 minute live view timeout on PC (likely 20 mins on android if the same as other reolink battery cameras) vs an obnoxiously short 15s for blink, at least when I used Blink All that said I would like to complain about one annoyance I've discovered on my magic cam, which is as expected it still enforced the 5 minute live view timeout on PC client when wired power. This doesnt make any sense. I think Blink had the same issue (pointless timeout on wired cams) but they eventually changed it. Hopefully Reolink could as well, but either way I'm happy with the product.

r/reolinkcam · Reolink Argus MagiCam: Practical Use Cases

incorrect, just for starters those do not have proper pc apps. thats a dealbreaker for me. i need to be able to manage and observe my cameras from my pc. you can view those from pc those, with tapo you can use some 3rd party software. like vlc to view from pc, its complicated tho. which eufy or tapo operates on aa lithiums? and is wired or battery? and under $50 i do have some tapo and they are great tho. never crossed paths with eufy yet but i'm sure theyre solid, any chinese brand is. but they do not make a cam like magicam.

r/reolinkcam · Just got a MagiCam and someone said hello

3 days something is insanely wrong, huge user error. i had blink mini which is kind of the same concept, the reviewers would all lie and say the battery life was shorter than the claimed 6 months, wrong, it lasted over 2 yrs for me, maybe 5 yrs i dont remember, on the same set of lithium energizers. in very heavy traffic. 3 days is absolutely not possible. no debate on that. even recording 24/7. altho i do get reolink is not blink, they still are clearly similar cameras.

r/reolinkcam · Reolink Argus MagiCam: Practical Use Cases

Blink cameras said one year and mine lasted 5 years/indefinitely in heavy traffice while every reviewer lied, each one lying more than the next as if in a game if one up manship, said they lasted a week lol. So with Blink at least battery life is MUCH longer than advertised, maybe 100X more than reviewers claimed, and in the many years. Now Reolink is doing the recording on device which is the secret to Blink, they offload recording the sync module (but for many reasons, blink are awful) and only claiming a lesser 9 months (I see blink currently claims 2 yrs). So all bets are off they even last the 9 months, who knows It's still fine battery life IMO tho. Mine granted I've just been tinkering around with it for a week or two and not even placed it outside yet, still reads 100%.

r/reolinkcam · Issues with Push Notifs and Emails on Reolink MagiCam

Just to be clear. It does work. It just stops working after a few hours. As an example, I just restarted it and I was able to get the test notifications and emails. Yesterday I did the same, the push notifications worked for at least half a day and then stopped working. I only ever received the test email though. I will keep an eye on the Date&Time and see if it desyncs. Right now I just looked and it is correct. To use a mobile network I guess I would need to leave my phone within the vicinity of the camera. But I’m guessing that the phone would shut down its hot spot after it’s inactive for some time. So not sure this would be a good test.

I found the installation a bit clumsy but have my system connected to my Home Lab where I run my own computer vision models to classify people and animals (we like to see all the traffic going through our yard at night). Battery status and percent is available through the API so I think I'll have it probe it each night and see if it's more accurate. The sudden going offline was a little disappointing. Hopefully it's a firmware or appside fix they will implement.

r/reolinkcam · Window mount for Magicam?

There's a few different 3d printed cases available on Makerworld if you know someone w a 3d printer. You could add a suction cup to one of these. If you're into cameras, a 3d printer can save you money on mounts and junction boxes - you just print em. Also I have superglued magnets to the front of cameras, put them against the glass, and used a magnet on the other side of the glass to hold it in place. As always mounting these inside the glass, you tend to get reflections when you don't want them, but works ok most of the time.

    r/reolinkcam · Magicam

It's disappointing that Reolink markets the Magicam as a battery camera when, in reality, it can operate perfectly without batteries as long as it's powered through its USB-C port. **The biggest issue is that once Reolink classifies it as a battery camera, users are prevented from recording 24/7 footage directly to the 2TB storage in the Home Hub Pro. Instead, we're forced to buy expensive high-capacity microSD cards for each Magicam just to enable continuous 24/7 onboard recording.** That completely defeats one of the main reasons for buying a Home Hub Pro in the first place—to centralize storage and avoid the cost of purchasing separate microSD cards for every camera. As for displaying it on a monitor, you can use the Home Hub Pro with its HDMI port to monitor Magicam on a screen or TV. Keep it mind it will stop the stream in after 5 mins if you using battery mode

r/reolinkcam · Feeling misled when using Magicam with Home Hub Pro

Deliberately classifying a camera as a battery-powered device, even though it can operate entirely on AC power without any batteries installed, forces users to buy a microSD card if they want 24/7 recording. Instead of being treated like a wired camera, it's still treated as a battery camera. From my perspective, this is misleading. In the United States, even seemingly minor issues can become the basis for a class-action lawsuit if enough consumers are affected. I would encourage Reolink to be careful and avoid creating unnecessary limitations that make things more difficult and more expensive for users.

The big downside for me is that there doesn't seem to be a way to disable the auto-off. I don't care about battery life. I want the camera to stay active for a couple of hours at a time. The stream will stay on for 5 minutes in HA and then go dark. I think TinyCam will re-initiate the connection once it goes to sleep. So far I'd say it has been good & stable (both cameras are outside on the yard and connected to the 5GHz wifi). Maybe 1-2 second lag and the connection is established quicker than I feared. Just now HA began streaming in 4 seconds. Not bad at all considering they're on batteries. Image quality is also better than I thought. Doubling the bitrate would be amazing and I will send feedback to them about it.

UPDATE: New hub arrived and worked as it should. Finally got the magicams connected to the hub (very slow to acknowledge each camera). Placed them in a very small apartment, with three of the cameras having line-of-sight to the hub. When trying to connect to them from the internet, they take FOREVER to connect, if they ever do; and when they do connect, they will go live for a few stuttering seconds and then freeze. The battery life was suggested at 3 mos, however after having the setup installed for one week, one of the cameras is at 1/2 and the other 3 are at 2/3 batt power. Now way any will make it close to 3 mos. They are only accessed 2-3 times a day for maybe 10-15 seconds (once they finally connect). Wishing I hadn’t invested this money in Reolink at the moment.

I bought the kit with the home hub mini. So far I wish I had bought another brand. The first hub was broken (button on front wouldn’t work). After days of back and forth, it was finally replaced by Reolink. Once connected (which takes a lot of patience—sloowwwww!), they have a decent picture…if you can get them to connect. I have the 4 cameras in my MIL home to help watch over her in her advanced age. Connecting to them takes forever. Once connected, they will play sketchy for a few seconds and then just freeze. I have good internet, no interference and a very small apartment. The hub is no further than 20 feet from any camera (3 with direct line of sight to the hub. NOT IMPRESSED! I have been trying different settings (2.4 vs 5g, moving the hub around, etc). Help forums say to change from Clear to Balanced in the app, but I have yet to find this in the 4.60.1.3 build.
