If you want always on 24/7 recording I think you need the wired cams. Battery powered cams didn't record 24/7 as it would kill the battery. Correct me if I'm wrong though

So here’s the state of things as of today of what’s still missing/problem: 1. You can’t save a random clip that is not an event. So if you see a Bigfoot walk thru your backyard and not trigger an event - you can use the phone app and screen record (iPhone does this well) but it will be as the resolution of the screen. 2. No Timelapse. This one is not huge for me because I maybe used it 1-2 times in 4 years now and it was mostly a snow storm that I did it for. 3. Delayed events - so what this means is if something happens - you have to be like 30’seconds off to rewind and see things entirely without being paused to only get to see the first part of it. What does that mean? So let’s say someone walks by. You can rewind back to see them start to enter a frame but after a few seconds it will freeze and you can either go to live - or wait until more video is “ready” to see what continues to happen. This truly is frustrating as hell that it take a so damn long to process video. 4. Scrolling thru video sucks - if you see something happen on screen, with the oldest app if you then let go, you are right at the frame you saw something. With GH, you are 30 seconds off form the event (forward/behind - who knows) and now you need to manually hunt for it and hope you can find it. They really dropped the ball on this one being so poor. 5. 24/7 recording must be done with being wired - and that wire isn’t cheap. The longer cord is like $40-50 if I remember right/ I got mine at half that being there was a sale and I went all in. Also when I bought my cameras - $149 each I believe. 6. Monthly cost for 60 days storage is $15 for Google Nest Aware I believe they call it.

The cameras are fantastic!!! The subscription service is great because you can add doorbell and cameras. Just have to buy the cord to connect to electric. Easy peasey.

r/Edmonton · Home security camera/doorbell alternative to Google Nest →2025-08-05T05:43:34

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I was having 'unavaible' issues with my Google Cams (have 2 doorbells and 2 floodlight cameras - although they are all hardwired) and did factory resets on the devices and it has been working with no issues for quite a while now. Not a solution to the very annoying subscription increases, but thought I'd mention in case it buys you some more time to wait for a Black Friday sale etc. for new devices.

I guess I should say, they are expensive and you still need a subscription. Otherwise, the Nest cams look pretty great. I'm a Google guy, I have all kinds of Google devices, so I would love to have native Google cams. But the price is just too rich for me. My whole reason for leaving Arlo was to avoid a subscription fee.

I had been using Dropcams since 2013 (when Dropcam was still an independent company) until April 8 (when Google/Nest "sunsetted" them). Though Google sent me two Nest Indoor Wired cams free of charge to use in their place, the new Nest cams are inferior in every way. The image & color quality of the new Nest cams is **VASTLY** inferior to that of the Dropcam Pro cameras (and the field of view is very slightly less wide). Secondly, the Google Home app (the new Nest cams do not/will not work with the Nest app as they are incompatible) will not/cannot save clips more than 5 minutes in length. If, for WHATEVER reason I need to, I wish to save a 15-minute video clip, I am forced to "stitch" together numerous 5-minute clips in a separate video editing app lol. Finally, the Google Home app cannot/does not send email **Event** notifications, it only sends push event notifications. Sure, there is a b.s. "Email Notification" setting in G.H., but that is only for b.s., mundane email notifications regarding upcoming, planned features, etc., it is not for event notifications. I have various reasons why, for me, email event notifications are preferable. IMO, the Nest Indoor Wired cam / Google Home ecosystem is a HUGE step backward in comparison to the Dropcam Pro / Nest system.

I went this route. Aside from the tinkering, it can also be a little confusing what does and doesn't support home assistant. Also NVR and cameras self hosted is going to be significantly more expensive than nest cams.

r/googlehome · Strange Eero Network Behavior with Nest Cam (battery) 2nd Gen - Epigram Inc. →2025-11-06T01:07:02

Google doesn't make cameras. Very few companies actually manufacture their own cameras. As in, assemble and / or spec out the camera lens, the internals, does it have a SoC if so make their own, etc. Even the manufacturing of their outer housing. Look up any IP camera and you can see how similar they look. Anyway, IIRC Epigram did something for IP connected devices before they were bought by Broadcom. Chances are Eero, like more "smart" routers are just trying to fetch and assign information on the devices and that's what it came back with instead of the more friendly Wired Nest Cam Gen 2 or whatever you actually have. My UDM Pro does the same thing and pretty horribly assigns chip manufactures as product names for a lot of my cameras. I spent weeks trying to figure out a mystery device hopping onto and off of my network until I realized it was my dashcam. Unifi called it `Remeha eTwist Slimm Thermostat`

r/googlehome · Is Google Home for Nest Cameras just this bad? →2025-07-20T06:07:14

We switched to Arlo, however they work with Google, so the home app as well as chrome cast USB plugged into the TV allows us to see all cameras on a big screen as we all as on my phone from anywhere. I highly recommend [Arlo Doorbell ](https://www.arlo.com/en-us/doorbell/video/arlo-doorbell.html) Half the time it says it's offline or a bad connection. We have a 2.5Gbps download with a shitty upload of 35mbps We are not offered a parallel network just yet.. However this should not effect Google home camera or nest cams. Highly Recommend Arlo Cameras & Doorbell with are security system "Simply Safe" https://preview.redd.it/sy70f5450zdf1.png?width=1008&format=png&auto=webp&s=233ef6fb556028206c97dd0c40bb86853fb75037

I have to say they have worked fine; I deployed 9 Nest Cams in Jan (with Solar cells) and then a doorbell. I did have to upgrade my WiFi prior. No issues, and hey have performed well. Features that I enjoy - Face recog. / Notifications / recording (I did purchase the membership) 1 small draw back you have to purchase storage for each property.

Yes, I understand that - I never said that was wrong. I am saying that the battery nest cam WILL do 24/7 You said "Yeah, and" to the poster saying that the battery cam will not do 24/7 - so that implies you are agreeing with him that the battery cam will not do 24/7

I have 6 in total. 4 battery but wired, 1 floodlight and 1 doorbell. I only started with the doorbell and had to get a subscription due to the limited free 3 hour history and that my displays and speaker were my door chime.so since I had the sub I just locked in... Can't complain other than the price of the cams and limited range. Sure 1080p recoding is pretty low these days. Some guys were expecting to read number plates of someone else's stolen car which opened my eyes on the resolution problem.. but I'm not that nosey to see everything down the street. Anyway if I was starting from scratch and didn't have so many nest speakers and displays I would go Eufy for the price savings and range of cameras available.

I don't do 24/7 recording on my battery floodlight but even too many events that triggered recording caused the battery to drain. I don't think it will handle constant recording. I loved the IQ 4k nest cams. This latest iteration was a disappointing step back.  I also worry about Googles commitment to the Nest products in the long term. Once my gear dies, I'm looking towards another brand if Google doesn't provide a better next iteration.

Thanks for the info and the review of adt. I bought nest secure when it first came out in 2017 and other than one I think false alarm, it justified the $700 ish equipment cost( not including the cameras which I mixes one nest cam with arlo pros) over all these years. Google doesn't have it's act together if it couldn't figure out how to monetize and sustain, especially since I assume it's internet costs are low since it has pricing power

You can save a clip for non event times if the camera is plugged in and recording 24/7.  It allows you to save clips between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. I have 6 outdoor battery cams on my property recording 24/7 and am overall happy with them.  We also have 2 doorbell cams and recording is the same on them if wired.   I recently put a wireless doorbell cam on our side door to catch traffic through the gate and its battery only.  It serves its intended purpose well but drives me nuts not being able to see 24/7 footage.

I’ve been quite negative about my Google/nest devices, however I would say my indoor camera (the indoor iq) has been great and I much prefer it now it’s been ported to the Google home app. I’d say the Google home app has improved things significantly. My Nest doorbell is on its way out though. the detection and doorbell press notifications are always 10 seconds delayed and the finish is peeling. But that said both still work after 4/5 years. I’d say you won’t regret it and the subscription is good for the extra recording etc Real reason I’m moving away from Google is because I got heavily into home assistant and want to eventually get Poe cameras and an nvr in scripted. But for plug and play the Nest cams are solid choices, especially if you’re invested in the Google home ecosystem.

What?! Yeah, the battery cameras need to be wired to do 24/7 recording, PLUS the extra subscription... His comment was that they need to be plugged into the mains to do 24/7 recording. I was agreeing to that plus stating you need to pay for it. Your interpretation of that was wrong.
