Moccamaster

Moccamaster, packshot

Love my machine! Some advice from owning one after 4 years. Go buy a bunch of the springs for the coffee filler. I’ve lost a couple times when cleaning it. They tend to fly off and go down the drain if you’re not careful. Or maybe I’m too rough when cleaning. Also buy a descaler kit for her, I run mine every 200 pots or about a box of filters. https://a.co/d/0rn70hs https://us.moccamaster.com/collections/replacement-parts/products/auto-drip-stop-repair-kit They sold just the spring before but you can also find on Amazon.

A bit about their service. I decided to take mine apart to clean all of it, ended up breaking a glass tube. Emailed them, paid 80$, dropped off a box of parts at ups they replaced the boiler, water reservoir, broken tube and something else. They paid for shipping both ways, although it’s not standard. Dropped it off to ups on Friday, was making coffee Thursday. Amazing.

Try asking about this in the r/coffee or r/jameshoffmann subreddits. Someone might have a fix for the ejecting hot coffee drawer issue. But if you’re intent on getting some new equipment, they’re going to tell you to get the moccamaster. Only get the moccamaster is your mom buys quality coffee. If she’s a Maxwell house, Folgers or Seattles Best gal, then stick to the OXO. Moccamaster does the best job extracting the flavor from beans. But if the beans are shitty, that’s not actually ideal.

r/BuyItForLife · Any thoughts on the Simply Good coffee maker?

Agreed, but also, there is too much plastic in the MM. copper internals and all plastic externals.  For the record I use a MM everyday for yeeeeaaaars now. I just also think the dripper and the downspout could easily be a different material. You can put a V60 where the dripper goes but it’s not a perfect solution.  My hot take: MM should make an official alternate material dripper, and Zojuirushi should have a stainless bowl option for the Neuro Fuzzy.

r/BuyItForLife · Any thoughts on the Simply Good coffee maker?

Not really. Once the metal reaches brew temp, which happens pretty quickly, it will be pretty consistently.  Most pour overs call for water right off of boil, which is what the moccamaster does well, so there’s not much you can do there.

r/BuyItForLife · Any thoughts on the Simply Good coffee maker?

That’s actually my point… I wish it was made of asbestos or lead or something more dangerous.  It’s more the longevity. The Teflon will break down and the plastic dripper is all stained with coffee oils. They will be the main items that breakdown in these two machines.

from their website: every part touching water (cold and hot) and coffee is plastic-free borosilicate glass carafe & water reservoir stainless steel shower arm, shower head, filter basket, hot water up-pipe, reservoir floor cover, one-way valve, water into boiler tube, boiler, and carafe top. surgical silicone fittings/connectors there's no doubt that there's less plastic on this unit vs the moccamaster, no idea if it will last as long though

r/BuyItForLife · UPDATE: 2 weeks ago I asked "What's the best no-frills coffee maker", and after 400+ recommendations, I bought my mom the Moccamaster

I bought a moccamaster a few years ago and long term i'm finding it a little... disappointing. Ultimately it looks cool but it's still just a drip coffee maker. It takes up a lot of counter space. Design is ok. It's all business. The insulated carafe is quality. (I opted for the carafe instead of warming plate because i prefer cold coffee over burnt sludge) It drip brews coffee like millions of mr coffee drip machines have since the percolator fell out of fashion. There is literally no difference in the coffee it produces and our old cuisinart drip coffee maker. Doing it over again I woulda just gone with a cheaper oxo drip machine and got the next more expensive baratza burr grinder. But there's no reason to trade out now. I just feel like i kinda bought into some reddit hivemind hype on the thing when usually i'm more skeptical.

I feel you. No doubt it's a cool machine. I didn't say i was getting rid of it! If I'm making coffee for just me the aeropress makes a better cup any day of the week. My wife likes drip so i make a pot for both of us most mornings with the mocca. That Lelit looks like a sweet machine but I have not ventured into espresso machine territory yet. I'm not sure if i want to go there. Seems like a slippery slope!

r/Moccamaster · Help! Weak tasting coffee

I came from decades of strong tasty pourover coffee and Moccamaster KBGV was my first drip machine in 25 years --needed something automatic for 5am wake up --put a smart switch on my MM. I stick to the following and get very strong delicious coffee 30Grams coffee to .5 L water--double it for more coffee etc. I started grinding finer and finer and found the "wow" spot--no bloom, no stirring coffee in the MM basket--just the coffee ground to taste--took three days to dial in and water in the machine. I brew the same local roaster coffee in my machine that I do later in the day for pourover. What I observe when I glance into my brew basket (where the filter is)--is with the right grind size, water sits above the coffee a tad (much like pourover but not quite). Is it as good as my pourovers-no of course not. Is it better than other drip machines--YES. I've tried it against many other machines when I visit friends etc. Every machine is different. I would have returned my MM if it was a bad machine. It's not --it's wonderful.

    r/BuyItForLife · Coffee Maker question

IDK--have a cuisinart that's over 20 years old. It was well regarded at the time. Just got a Moccamaster and hands down it made good coffee, better than most restaurants and cafes I frequent. I do pourovers mostly---Kalita or Hario -both units last decades.

r/BuyItForLife · Best coffee maker? Is there anything new in 2025?

I'm going to hold with my pour over then --my Hario and Kalita--I have hot water in a heater always on the ready (thanks Zojirushi). I have a 23 year old Cuisinart that's been great . I think I'll have to taste a pot of Moccamaster with beans I'm familiar with --it's all about taste for me.

    r/BuyItForLife · Coffee maker -non-smart lol

I have an old Cuisinart with a toggle switch going on 22 years. BUT I've been doing pourover and switched to Moccamaster with a smart outlet. Bonus points, a good old analog plug timer turns it on as well. Great machine. Delicious.

    r/BuyItForLife · Coffee Maker question

That's the truth. I have a Kalita 102 that's decades old and my Hario Switch allows me to do a bit more. For machine coffee my MM made the best tasting. I've had a well regarded Cuisinart for over 21 years but the MM tastes better.

    r/BuyItForLife · Coffee Maker question

I've not had my MM reveal defects. I do pourover and pourover hands down tastes better than the MM with the same beans BUT the best machine coffee I'm having is with the MM.

r/BuyItForLife · Coffee maker - Once and for all

Buying something today--right now --no one can say. Brand names with long standing reputations change over time..... I can say I have a Cuisinart drip machine that's over 20 years old. Moccamaster is well regarded still but will either of those, that I buy today be around in 20 years----don't know.

r/BuyItForLife · UPDATE: 2 weeks ago I asked "What's the best no-frills coffee maker", and after 400+ recommendations, I bought my mom the Moccamaster

Personally, one of the drawing points of something like this is the fact it doesn't have any frills other than making coffee. I've never needed a timer for coffee because it really only saves you the time of hitting a button. It still needs the filter in, the grounds in, the water in, and the carafe cleaned. This is where I start teetering on coffee snob territory, but I would also say that the moccamaster is trying to be the best cup of autodrip coffee, not the easiest or most automatic to use. Typically you would get it if you value good coffee. If you value good coffee, you typically want to grind fresh beans before the pot anyway. Of course, many would say that if you *really* value good coffee you wouldn't do drip in the first place. All that to say, the moccamaster is in a really niche but effective spot in the coffee making world. I honestly think that more functionality to it in ways that aren't directly relevant to making good coffee does more to turn off their target audience than bring in new ones.

r/BuyItForLife · UPDATE: 2 weeks ago I asked "What's the best no-frills coffee maker", and after 400+ recommendations, I bought my mom the Moccamaster

I feel like you didn't understand my point or the point of this subreddit. Firstly, a timer is a "frill" in regards to coffee making. I'm not saying it doesn't have a use or that people shouldn't prioritize it if it's important to them, but it has nothing to do with actually making good coffee. Like you said, it only needs to heat up water and pass it through beans! Secondly, we're in r/buyitforlife, not r/ICouldJustBuy20OfTheseOverMyLife. Thirdly, I said it's a **niche** product meant for coffee enthusiasts who care to have a higher quality cup than a Mr. Coffee can provide but aren't willing to do a pour over every morning. Yes, it just heats up water and passes it through beans, but it does so *consistently,* at the right temperature, blooms the beans, and has a showerhead spout instead of a stream to cover the beans evenly as opposed to a Mr. Coffee spout. If you think coffee is coffee and don't think you'd ever need more than a $20 machine, then yeah, the moccamaster seems ridiculous. That was my whole point.

r/BuyItForLife · UPDATE: 2 weeks ago I asked "What's the best no-frills coffee maker", and after 400+ recommendations, I bought my mom the Moccamaster

No, it doesn't inherently make sense to imo. That is a whole redesign both aesthetically and internally, manufacturing setup including new processes and molds, and they have to worry about how they differentiate these two models in a way that's clear to the customer is only a clock. That all takes hundreds of thousands of dollars at least. Do you think adding a clock to it will bring in that many more customers? Or that it not having a clock was the sole reason they've left that much money on the table? To be clear, I'll eat my words and sleep soundly tomorrow if they announce one with a clock, I don't really care if it does or doesn't, but I understand why it doesn't and personally, it adds zero value to me and may just make the thing look uglier.

r/BuyItForLife · UPDATE: 2 weeks ago I asked "What's the best no-frills coffee maker", and after 400+ recommendations, I bought my mom the Moccamaster

No they're not... the differences are stainless steel carafes, bigger carafes, and manual drip options. If anything, they get *less* automatic in other models. Again*,* they make these for enthusiasts; they prioritize good coffee and aesthetic. A digital clock adds to neither of those things. Where does this logic of "it's simple so it should have it" end? Should every toaster of $X *need* a clock? A blender? A vibrator? Should an electric coffee grinder *also* have a clock to cover all bases?

r/BuyItForLife · Any thoughts on the Simply Good coffee maker?

I'm a mod over at moccamaster and I've actually done research on the company and the simply good machines because they're often brought up by people who are interested in less plastic. The simply good coffee company was started by a fantastic woman who realized that not enough people have a coffee maker with a powerful enough heating element to make proper drip coffee (1400 watts) She has since retired from the company and the company is now being run by a venture capitalist who used to run a private jet rental service. Since her retirement, Simplygoodcoffee's advertising has become rather disingenuous, I won't bore you with the details I'll just give you the facts. Simplygood coffee does make a machine that resembles a Moccamaster in design. But so does Krups. The design is no longer protected. Simplygood coffee does make a plastic free version that costs more than the most expensive Moccamaster. The warranty on the Simplygood machine is 2 years, the warranty on the Moccamaster is 5 years. Simplygood machines are made in China, Moccamasters are hand made in the Netherlands. Technivorm continues to provide support, replacement parts, and out of warranty repairs and refurbishment even for machines and models that are decades old. With basic care a Moccamaster will last you a lifetime. I don't know enough about the quality of Simplygood machines to make a statement about them. I've seen complaints about leaking machines that were replaced under warranty but I've also seen complaints like those about Moccamasters which were a result of damage from shipping. I just can't determine the quality of simplygood's machines. The Mocca goes on sale about twice a year and you can pick up a model for 50% off retail sometimes. There's an enthusiastic hacking community for the Mocca that replaces the plastic brew basket with other alternatives like a glass Hario. My view on it is, Moccamaster is a legitimate BIFL machine with no bells and whistles. The SGC zero plastic machine could be a legitimately great BIFL machine but its such a new product we might not know of any issues yet.

r/BuyItForLife · Any thoughts on the Simply Good coffee maker?

I think environmental microplastics are a serious issue, however I think there is some fear mongering about the brew basket that verges on silliness. My personal view, which might not be correct, is that the brew basket is perfectly fine. Its made of high quality TPE (its kind of like a cross between plastic and rubber) and contains no additives like bisphenols or pthalates which can leach out. In the past they used polypropylene with additives but have switched to a high quality TPE. You can look at old models with the different plastic and see how it used to be thicker and looked higher quality but you can also see how its starting to flake apart in places. The plastic parts looks cheap, and feel cheap but they're actually quite decent and only use as much plastic as required. and they're user replaceable. If I hold concerns about aging plastic starting to shed particles I'd replace them with a new part every decade or so. And a full replacement of a brew basket and a carafe tube is a little over 35 dollars US for my model as of this post. Other people just don't want any plastic at all and find out ways to add different ceramic or glass brewers. That's perfectly fine in my opinion. I think Technivorm is working on a plastic free brew option that has similar thermal properties to the TPE basket. SGC had to go from 1400 watts to 1500 watts to keep the coffee at the proper brew temp because of the heat loss,

Oh man, it looks like that and only has two rocker switches to control the whole thing?? Nice! As an aside, I was using the OXO Brew grinder for several years until very recently and loved it. For the price it was very reliable and consistent, but maybe just a little loud. I only ever switched to another one to save some space, and it still works great.

And…it looks amazing. I have one and it makes the best and most distinctive coffee I’ve had. E.g. I was on vacation and the BnB’s coffee was amazing and I knew they were using a moccamaster - the host confirmed it for me in front of my wife!(1st time ever). I heard three other couples comment on how good the coffee was at the same place. However, if momma is drinking pre-ground Folgers — it will make it taste like the cheap, shitty coffee it is.

OXO is the way to go then, my friend. I have a Moccamaster, but it really only shines with "good" coffee. The times I brewed whatever bag of starbucks/dunkin nonsense I grabbed in a pinch, you couldn't tell that I had an expensive brewer. r/BuyItForLife · Need a quality coffee maker

A BIFL coffee machine doesn’t have to be expensive, but some will be. What sort of machine is the Walmart one? I can explain a few of the terms you have seen but if you just want a recommendation for an awesome coffee maker that will last longer than you will, skip right to the bottom. The reason you get questions about “French press”, “drip coffee”, “espresso” etc. is because asking for a recommendation for a “coffee maker” is a bit like asking for a recommendation for a “food cooker”; it could mean a grill or a convection oven or an air fryer or a big green egg or a microwave or a camping stove. They’ll all do the same thing (cook food), but they’ll all do it slightly differently. So there are six basic types of coffee maker people tend to use at home if we don’t include Nespresso-type pod things (and we don’t; they’re not very good, horrible for the environment and *definitely* not BIFL). **Pour over coffee makers** are jugs that hold a filter; coffee grounds go into the filter, and hot water pours over the coffee grounds giving you coffee. Pretty much foolproof. You need filters for them. Definitely BIFL. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will cost about £25. **French presses** (we call them **cafetières** in England) are glass beakers with a plunger and a wire mesh. You steep coffee in water, push the plunger down, and you’ll have some coffee. Easy to use. Easy to maintain. Definitely BIFL. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will cost about £30. **Aeropress** is almost like a combination of the first two. A plastic cylinder holds coffee and hot water. Push a plunger down into it applies pressure to brew the coffee. Easy to use, easy to maintain. Was only invented in 2005 so can’t say if it’s BIFL yet. There are silicone seals etc that Inimagine would need to be replaced. The glass version, Aeropress premium is £150. **Drip coffee makers** are basically the same as pour-over coffee makers but they will heat water, keep coffee warm etc. Good ones *can* be BIFL but require some maintenance. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will cost about £250. **Moka pots** are traditional little metal pots you can use on a stovetop to make espresso. Easy to maintain. Definitely BIFL. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will probably cost you no more than £60. **Espresso machines** are the big expensive looking thing ms you’ll typically see baristas using in coffee shops. They force hot water through very finely-ground coffee at high pressure creating very rich coffee. There’s a fair bit of knowledge required to work them. Require regular maintenance. Lots of paraphernalia too. Can be BIFL. There are machines available for more than £20k so top-of-the-range is not really relevant here but superb machines for home use are about £600. You’ll also need a superb coffee grinder though. Ideally, you would know what type of coffee you currently make and what type of coffee you like to drink for a start. The biggest difference between coffeemakers in this style, and cheaper ones is how they heat the water. Cheaper models save money by using the heat plate to heat the water. So you are making a trade off. The plate needs to be pretty hot to get the water up to temp. But not too hot as to boil the coffee in the carafe. That means the water comes out of the brew spout at 180F at best, often lower. Also, the burner is really too hot to hold the coffee, and cooks it after some time Moccamaster and similar styles have separate heating elements for the water and the hot plate. That means the water is heated to the actual optimal temp (just below boiling). It also means that the brew time is much faster- in the realm of 4 min or so for a full pot. Which is the correct brew time. Also, since the hot plate now doesn’t need to be so hot, it can hold the coffee at a much lower temp, and not cook it as it sits there.

Technivorm Moccamaster, the absolute gold standard for coffee machines and it does go on sale at Amazon regularly; you’ll pay for it but it makes drip coffee that tastes like pour over in a consistent basis and it is very easy and quick. You also want to make sure you are grinding the beans fresh in a burr grinder for each brew, even using the exact same brand and roast fresh ground has a more complex flavor profile.

r/Home · Good coffee maker for better coffee at home?

Trouble with pour over and French press is time. . . I and other just don’t have the time to go through the whole ceremony every morning then wash it out and do it again. . . I love a nice pour over coffee but it’s not as easy as the MM. I do agree the MM calls for a lot of coffee, but it is REALLY good coffee. As for the grinder I’ve been very happy with the OXXO burr grinder, it really does punch above its weight; trick is getting the weight to time dialed in.

r/JamesHoffmann · Need Help with the Best Drip Coffee Maker 2026?

I've had a moccamaster for years. I use it daily. Taste is good. Overall, it has been a great addition to our kitchen. The cons are the gap from the basket arm to the pot. There is very little room, so I often find myself scraping the lid or bottom of the pot.

r/BuyItForLife · FYI - the most frequently recommended coffee maker (the Technivorm Moccamaster) is deeply discounted today

It's both. For drip coffee makers, there are only two variables under the control of the coffee maker: a) the temperature of the water when it hits the grounds, and b) the speed that the water pours through the grounds. When developing and designing this coffee maker, Technivorm committed a lot of time, money, and effort into testing and quantifying the most optimal (from a flavor standpoint) values for those variables...and then they spent a great deal of time, money, and effort creating the mechanics to ensure their coffee maker conformed to those optimal variables. Add that to the over-engineered specifications and the fact that they sell all of the parts needed to repair or rebuild one if needed and you have a truly BIFL product.

r/BuyItForLife · FYI - the most frequently recommended coffee maker (the Technivorm Moccamaster) is deeply discounted today

Yeah. Before I got my moccamaster, I went through 6 coffee makers in 8 years. All 6 died shortly after the initial 1-year warranty period ended. My wife scoffed at me for spending over $300 on a coffee maker when I finally bought the Moccamaster. That was over 9 years ago, so it's more than paid for itself considering it works as well today as the day we bought it. We are prolific coffee drinkers, and I think the other name brand coffee makers that sell for around $100 each just aren't designed with longevity in mind.

    r/BuyItForLife · What's the best no-frills coffee maker?

This is the best and only answer to the question. It may be pricey up front, but considering I was replacing busted coffee makers every 16 to 18 months until I bought the moccamaster, it has more than paid for itself in the decade I've owned it.

r/BuyItForLife · Is a Moccamaster worth it if one isn't a huge detailed coffee person?

My moccamaster has been fantastic and flawless since 2008. It gets used every day, twice a day on weekends. Yes, I've had to replace the carafe three or four times and the plastic ones (My wife puts it in the dishwasher), but the unit itself has been bulletproof and makes excellent coffee. In fact, I can't think of another drip style coffee maker that makes coffee as well. Note: my mom got one in 2012. It is still used daily as well now that my sister has it.

    r/BuyItForLife · What's the best no-frills coffee maker?

There's only one answer in the coffee world...Moccamaster. Yes, they are expensive. Yes, they're generally regarded as the best drip coffee maker in the world. Yes, they will last decades or more. Yes, they are dead simple. There's two switches on the front. One is an on-off switch, the second switch is for the heat plate.

    r/BuyItForLife · What's the best no-frills coffee maker?

They frequently go on sale. I saw them not too long ago for $280. Amazon has the 10 cup model right now for $319. Yes, they are expensive! I bought mine in 2007 or 2008 and it is still going strong. My mom got hers, my sister now has it, it was circa 2012. Mine gets used everyday and twice on weekends.

Plastic basket and water tank. No timer. Does it even have an auto off feature? If I'm spending $300 to replace the Mr. Coffee I want it to have extra features, better quality, AND repairability.

Professional coffee person and amateur opinion -haver here: you want a Technivorm Moccamaster. There are cheaper options that are also good, but this is BIFL, and the Moccamaster is built to last, easily repairable, and makes superior coffee to most brewers. There are ~ 20 brewers certified by the Specialty Coffee Association as meeting their strict standards and about 1/3 of those are Technivorm models.

Quite a lot more intense and it meets the brewing temp and time requirements to be approved by the "Specialty Coffee Association" which the Mr Coffee doesn't. The Mr Coffee is a good budget option though; the Moccamaster is very expensive because it's assembled by hand by the dutch rather than offshored to pseudo-slaves in Asia.

Breville Precision if he cares about the ability to tweak a bunch of variables, despite the brewer not being very remarkable to look at on your counter every single day. Moccamaster if he cares about design. If he’s into mid century design, things like Herman Miller furniture, vintage Braun products, record players, etc. Fellow Aiden if he’s into the latest tech They’ll all brew pretty good coffee, but in my opinion these three serve three different types of people. I care about my coffee and nerd out over my pour over coffee, but I own a Moccamaster because I simply cannot justify having an ugly coffee maker on my counter 24/7/365 when something as beautiful as the Moccamaster exists

r/BuyItForLife · Best coffee maker? Is there anything new in 2025?

I got a Moccamaster for $170 on Prime day earlier this year. It’s nice, there are definitely valid complaints you’ll hear on the sub, though. Some parts feel cheap, it’s annoying that the shower head is off-center, etc. It’s a good looking machine and it makes good coffee, but I am glad I got it for $170 and not $350.

r/BuyItForLife · Best coffee maker? Is there anything new in 2025?

No, it just doesn’t sit over the center of the grinds/filter. So it drops water off-center into them. If you have your grinds sized just right it doesn’t matter much, but it does make it easier for a crust to form on the far side and for the grinds to not get evenly saturated. It’s a complaint you’ll see on r/Moccamaster fairly often, and I’ve never seen the company try to defend it like they have some of the cheaper components. Pretty sure they just don’t want to change up any of their parts. That sub can be toxic though, I’m sure someone will jump in here to tell me the company can do no wrong and I clearly don’t understand how the Coriolis effect affect steep times and drop location or something. Still enjoy the machine, though— I’m drinking a cup from it right now

    r/BuyItForLife · Best Coffee Machine/maker for a gift?

Espresso machines and drip-coffee machines at the BIFL level are almost always two separate machines, three if you need a coffee grinder. There's also a distinction to be made between quality coffee and durability here. I'm going to give you a few options based on what you want to prioritize. If you're primarily looking for espresso with the occasional drip coffee, and you want to maximize quality and durability: get a high-quality hand grinder, pourover set, and put most of your money into espresso. Something like a Commandante, Hario V60, and a Rancilio Silvia. If you want mostly drip-coffee, swap out the V60 for a Moccamaster and the espresso machine for a Gaggia Classic. If you don't want to bother with hand grinding, get a Baratza Encore ESP, though it's more electronics and some people would say it won't be as good as a Commandante. Hario, Rancilio, and Moccamaster have all been in the coffee business for 50+ years and there are heaps of replacement parts and guides out there. They also make great coffee and are well-known in the hobbyist and professional space. Baratza and Commandante are relatively newer but they also sell pretty much every single part you could ever need to replace directly and have also been around for more than a decade.

I already had all these arguments and don't feel like having them again. But I've lived in the same place, with the same water, for 6+ years. 5 months ago I got Moccamaster, and I feel like to keep the coffee at that level it needs way more frequent descaler. But I also don't have time or energy to debate this so, if you want to feel like you're right and it's in my imagination/for some reaon you understand and I don't/etc etc, please feel free. I don't care that much.

r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

I do have a filter. I can try a brita I guess. I'm more comparing the amount my last machine needed descaling to the amount my moccamaster does. And it's about twice as much to maintain the quality with the same water. But, hey I keep it, so obviously still like it enough to do it.

Honestly just get a decent drip machine like a Technivorm or Bonavita and call it a day. French press is just coffee grounds steeping in hot water then you push down a filter - it's more hands on but tastes different (heavier). Espresso is way stronger and concentrated, totally different beast For black coffee the temperature thing matters less than good beans and a consistent machine. Those Technivorms last forever and brew at the right temp automatically so you don't have to think about it

r/BuyItForLife · Buy it For Life Coffee Maker

9 years of daily use is solid for any drip machine honestly. the heating element is usually what kills them and if yours is still going strong at that pace thats impressive if youre looking for the actual BIFL move though — technivorm moccamaster. dutch made, hand assembled, copper boiling element hits the right temp every time. mine is 6 years old and the only maintenance is descaling every couple months. they sell replacement parts for literally everything including the power switch. $300 feels steep until you do the math on buying a new $60 maker every 3-4 years budget alternative: bonavita 1900TS, does SCA gold cup temps for about $100-120. not as rebuildable as the moccamaster but the brewing is on par or go full BIFL and get a pour over setup. hario v60 is $8, a gooseneck kettle is $30, and theres literally nothing to break

r/BuyItForLife · Any thoughts on the Simply Good coffee maker?

the real question is whether the heating element and brew temp are comparable. moccamaster hits the SCA recommended 195-205F range consistently which is like 90% of why the coffee actually tastes good. most cheaper drip machines cant hold that range. less plastic touching the water is nice but if the brew temp is off youre just making mediocre coffee in a prettier machine. havent seen any independent temp tests on the simply good yet which makes me skeptical

r/BuyItForLife · In need of coffee maker advice

moccamaster is the answer but timing the purchase matters -- they run real sales occasionally and it's worth knowing the actual floor price before you buy. been tracking it on couponpicked and the swing between full price and a genuine sale is meaningful at this price point. don't buy it at $350+ if you can catch it for $250-270 at a sale. also if budget is the constraint: breville precision brewer has a thermal carafe version that hits the right brew temp consistently and has held up for a lot of people for 5+ years. not moccamaster longevity but a solid middle option.

r/JamesHoffmann · Best drip coffee makers for home with no bells and whistles?

If you want that customization, go for teh Aiden; but the bottom line is with chips and motors and pumps, there's no way it BIFL. When it breaks, will parts be available? Can most people with a basic tool set repair it? If it scratches your itch, go for it, but I'll take the simplicity and maintainability of the MM

r/JamesHoffmann · Finally have a budget for a proper coffee maker, where do I even start if i need the best coffee maker?

Big question you need to answer is do you like the extended ritual of manual brewing or do you want simplicity? I went from discovering its not coffee I don't like to realizing its BAD coffee I don't like. French Press (messy) to Aeropress (clean but smaller batches) to recently moving to a Moccamaster because the ritual is fine for occasional cups, but sucks for a morning ritual (COVID). If you go auto-drip, make sure its s SCA certified unit. $200-$400. I spent more on the MM because its BIFL/repairable model; If you want to play endlessly to get an extra 1% and are ok with knowing all that complexity will break down sooner, Aiden is fine; not what I want. If you need to save money, stick with the pour-over/AeroPress soluions, And don't forget the grinder, money well spent getting a good one

r/JamesHoffmann · What are the best coffee makers worth buying the MOST out there?

What he said,, the MM is simple & reliable, but arguably you might be able to get a bit more refined coffee by dropping the the temp 2 degrees. If you need that sort of control, the Aiden is the one, but all that complexity will come at a cost in reliability. Personally I’d expect 5 -8 years out of the Aiden.

r/JamesHoffmann · Need Help with the Best Drip Coffee Maker 2026?

They cost a bit more, but they are built to be repaired, meaning they can last a very long time. Part of the expense also goes to the copper heat exchanger, letting it het to temp very fast. I've only had mine a few years but love mine, great looking and great performing

r/Moccamaster · Is upgrading to a Moccamaster actually worth it if I’m fine with my cheap drip machine?

Honestly the biggest factor is what is your financial situation like? If dropping $300 is going to cause stress in other aspects of your life, then a Moccamaster is probably not worth getting. If you are in a comfortable spot financially, you’ll be happy dropping the money even just to see the machine in your kitchen every morning because it is a gorgeous statement piece and conversation starter when you have company. For me, with my old coffee maker, I was fairly happy with my coffee but I found myself going to my local coffee shop 3-4 times a week because i wanted to treat myself, but now my coffee at home is better than what I can get from a coffee shop. So for me it has saved me money after only like 2 month worth of not buying coffee from the coffee shop.

I hate to be that guy but Moccamaster does not recommend using distilled water. **What kind of water should I use?** "If it tastes good to drink, it will make good coffee. We recommend fresh tap, filtered, or bottled water. We do not recommend using reverse osmosis filtered water or distilled water, as it can damage the brewer’s boiling element. In reverse osmosis water and distilled water, all minerals are removed, and the water’s PH becomes slightly acidic. The water will leach minerals out of the copper boiling element to return to a neutral PH, eventually damaging the copper element permanently. Because we build Moccamaster coffee brewers to last for a long time, using reverse osmosis or distilled water could significantly reduce the brewer’s life." r/BuyItForLife · Best Drip Coffee Maker

This is one question that doesn't seem to go away... Reddit has a serious hard on for the Technivorm Moccamaster, but I'm going to give you another recommendation - Bonavita. I own both, and both are SCA-certified and brew excellent coffee. However, the Bonavita wins for me for the following reasons: * It's physically smaller and shorter, and can fit in more people's kitchen well. * It's easier to clean * It extracts better and brews coffee a couple degrees hotter * It's a simpler design * Bonavita carafes are excellent (glass or thermal), Moccamaster carafes are not (their thermal carafes are known to leak from the bottom because of a loose glass liner seal, and both their thermal and glass carafes are known to spill when pouring at a reasonable speed) * Bonavita uses a copper heating element just like Moccamaster, but is a significantly less expensive machine, and therefore much better value. Best of luck whatever you decide. Any SCA-certified machine will brew decent coffee, so enjoy. If you care most about good taste, start roasting your own beans, if you don't already. Also, I just want to mention that there are plenty of drip coffee makers whose manufacturers have never paid for SCA certification, but nevertheless brew excellent coffee. So while it's true to say SCA-certified brewers will make good coffee, it's certainly not true to say that non-SCA-certified brewers will not. One of my favorite coffee makers is a small 4-cup I picked up at a thrift store decades ago that has no manufacturer markings on it of any kind (so it was likely stolen from a hotel or something similar). It brews truly excellent coffee and cost me $4.99.

r/BuyItForLife · Any thoughts on the Simply Good coffee maker?

It may or may not have copper, but where I am, this coffee brewer sells for more than a Moccamaster. Even if it didn't, though, you can get copper internals in much less expensive brewers than a Moccamaster - my BonaVita has copper and even now they sell for less than $200 (It was about $100 when I purchased it many year ago). And I firmly believe the BonaVita makes better coffee than the Moccamaster (I have both, and have done direct comparisons.)

Your Mr. Coffee is not producing the same result. Because the Mr. Coffee is designed to be profitable at a very low price point, it compromises on function. The heater for the hot plate is what heats the water for brewing. If the hot plate is hot enough for brewing, it will burn the coffee the moment it enters the carafe. Conversely, if the hot plate is kept at a lower temp so as to not burn the freshly-brewed coffee, it is not hot enough for full extraction of the coffee, thus causing the coffee to be on the more sour end of the flavor spectrum. The Mr. Coffee takes the latter approach, so the brew temp is too low for proper extraction. The Moccamaster uses a solid copper boiler to heat the water, and a separate heater for the hot plate, ensuring correct temps for both functions. So it brews at a correct and consistent temperature and flow rate, and it does this with a lifespan measured in decades with daily use. I'm not bagging on the Mr. Coffee. It does what it's designed to do, and if you're good with the results, there's nothing wrong with that. The Moccamaster produces exceptionally good coffee, which the Mr. Coffee cannot do, and it's exceptionally reliable.

r/Moccamaster · Is upgrading to a Moccamaster actually worth it if I’m fine with my cheap drip machine?

Water temp is going to be the biggest difference. The Aromaboy doesn't heat the water hot enough for full extraction. That said, the Moccamaster isn't magic. It only provides the correct brew temp at the correct flow rate. If you want an excellent cup of coffee you will also need quality fresh roasted beans and a grinder that grinds evenly which is expensive unless you get a manual grinder. Or a local roaster that grinds the coffee for you. Any SCA or ECB certified coffee maker will give the same extraction quality. The Moccamaster has the added benefit that it will last for decades with daily use. They're super reliable. Only you can decide if it's worth it. There are millions of people in the States that happily drink Folgers from a Mr. Coffee. (I'm kind of envious of them because I'm no longer able to be happy with that now that I know what good coffee tastes like.)

r/BuyItForLife · UPDATE: 2 weeks ago I asked "What's the best no-frills coffee maker", and after 400+ recommendations, I bought my mom the Moccamaster

I hear you, but I have a different POV. That little timer control board with a computer on it is one more thing to fail and render your coffee maker unusable. The Moccamaster having just a physical on/off switch is one of the reasons it lasts so long and it also means you can switch it on with it plugged into a smart outlet, and you now have full home-automation or mobile-app control over when it starts brewing. That's something you cannot do with a machine that needs to be programmed to turn on at a set time.

r/BuyItForLife · Any thoughts on the Simply Good coffee maker?

    1) No part of what you linked states that microplastics are harming us. I am not aware of any study that proves that microplastics are harming us. This doesn't mean that they aren't, it just means there is so far no proof that they are. Correlation is not causation. 2) I defy anyone to produce a study that shows that the Moccamaster's plastic disintegrates as you use it. 3)The validity of the findings of many of the previous studies have recently come into question: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jan/13/microplastics-human-body-doubt No part of what I have stated is claiming that microplastics don't harm us. What I am starting is that we do not know if they harm us. And that is a fact.

This. It’s a drip coffee machine - the concept is the same and the coffee remains virtually unnoticeably different from our cheapo machine. The beans/freshness/quality of the grind mean more than the machine. My issue, and reason for changing was that I never have luck with the cheap machines and would replace them at least once every 2-3 years for $50-$100 each. The Moccamaster is built like a tank and so far I’m on year 3 without issue. So if you’re cycling through cheap machines quickly. Then it’s worth the upgrade. Otherwise, not worth it.

    >internally isn’t not designed that way. What does this even mean? It's a coffee pot. It has a hearing element that heats water. There is nothing about it that would make it incompatible with a standard smart switch, which is simply a relay: no different electrically than the physical switch built into the coffee machine. If they don't recommend smart plugs, it's because they want you to be brewing freshly ground coffee instead of coffee that has sat overnight. Obviously, freshly ground coffee is objectively better tasting, but whether you value that over not waiting 5 minutes in the morning is an opinion and has nothing to do with how the coffee pot is electrically designed.

r/BuyItForLife · Best coffee maker? Is there anything new in 2025?

Eh, I'm no expert, but isn't 60oz probably too much liquid to keep warm with a hotplate without scorching it? I have the glass/hotplate version of the normal size moccamaster and I'd rather honestly even have the carafe for this one. Yeah the "half pot" setting works fine and being able to see the amount left is nice, I suppose.

    r/BuyItForLife · Coffee Maker question

I have two coffee makers. A MoccaMaster that is 20 years old. And a Europiccola that is 35 years old. Both will outlive me. Other than descaling (which all coffee makers need from time to time), both have been maintenance free. If you drink coffee for the taste, letting your ground coffee sit overnight means a loss in quality. There's no getting around this. Not unless you buy a "it will break in a year" model that grinds and brews -- there's just too much that can break with those gadgets. Since I'm a coffee farmer, I have used basically every machine there is. I recommend the above two models. And a French press in case the power goes out. (And, yes, I have a hand-crank grinder for that. But it's a chore.) The ONLY problem with the MoccaMaster is that it is so good at extracting coffee from the grounds that it will reveal defects in the coffee you drink. A lot of people buy one, and their coffee tastes MUCH worse, because they're buying strip-picked, burnt commodity coffee.

I’ve had some form of grind and brew for almost 30 years. Moccamaster, from the standpoint of having no automation, was an adjustment but I am very glad I made it as the coffe is hot and flavorful like it’s supposed to be. I would suggest you buy a grinder and start with grinding your own beans. You will be amazed at how much you coffee is elevated even using a basic coffeemaker. I suggest the Baratza encore grinder to start. It is a workhorse that’s been getting very high ratings for years and is around $150. It is a burr grinder which is a must and will last for years. I now have a Moccamaster k5 grinder which I also love and kept the Encore as backup. If you decide to buy a MM brewer, get the one that can be set to brew a half pot. Is it worth it? It is to me. I was replacing $300 coffeemakers that made not hot enough coffee every 3-4 years. Come June I’ve had my Moccamaster for 5 years. I expect it to last many more years.

This guy is right. Really getting a moccamaster is more about longevity than improving coffee taste. Also I didn't see anything in there about what kind of coffee OP is using. OP if you are using pre ground coffee I would highly recommend buying a decent burr grinder and buying quality whole bean coffee. That will make a huge difference in your coffee taste. The machines may have some marginal effects on coffee taste but nothing like upgrading to quality fresh ground coffee does.

Remove the anti drip manual valve from the filter holder immediately to avoid future spills. The automatic one is ok. The auto off timer model is useful but you can just use a wall socket timer.

I have had mine for 10 years and the lid and burners working great. The nice thing is they will fix your machine even after warranty for $60. Also you can replace a lot of the parts on your own. r/BuyItForLife · Is a Moccamaster worth it if one isn't a huge detailed coffee person?

Yes, make absolutely better coffee. The copper element is heating at stable temperature. The mostly aluminium machines have too low weak coffee in the beginning of the pot and overheated bitter coffee in the last end of the pot. So mixed a third weak coffee with a third good coffee with a third burned coffee in 1 pot. Moccamaster has just a good pot of good coffee. Other machines die in 5 years doing nothing anymore or leak. I choose the metal isolation pot for extra durability and electricity savings. Moccamaster for bifl is easy repaired with a screwdriver and available spare parts everywhere. My last drip machine died in 4 years. Now Moccamaster is 10 years old. Now I use cheap brands coffee and still taste better than anywhere else. My taste developed during this time and i can absolutely taste different machines make different coffee. Moccamaster still the best.

I’d say it’s fine. Nothing amazing.  Biggest issue is that it doesn’t get the coffee hot enough. Adding even a small amount of milk or cream brings the coffee down nearly to room temp. To be fair though I always compare auto drip coffee makers to a cheapo Melitta that I got in the 90s from a thrift store for something like $5. No other auto drip I’ve used could get coffee as hot as that thing did without burning it. It was magical.

I'm not sure I know any reliable coffee makers that makes mediocre coffee. 🤷‍♂️. Look man, as with any product, you're balancing three things. r/JamesHoffmann · Need Help with the Best Drip Coffee Maker 2026?

Based on your requirements, a Moccamaster seems like the best fit. Specifically the Optio or the KBGV Select. If you make a lot of coffee at once, consider getting the thermal carafe version as that is far better at maintaining both heat and flavour. The glass version “cooks” the coffee on the hotplate, introducing weird flavours to the coffee over time. The thermal versions are often called Moccamaster Automatic Thermo in the EU/Nordics or KBGT/KBT in other naming. But it is significantly taller than the glass version. So my recommendation is to just buy a separate thermal carafe and pour from the glass container into that, which is what I do. I find the glass versions looks better as well. So: - Moccamaster Optio / KBGV Select - Optionally a thermal carafe (only if you brew large batches)

Wait for Black Friday or around Christmas because on Amazon, they were $100 off. I got mine for $280 plus tax in October. Next month they were $250, tax and all. I had the OXO grinder in th past. You dodged a bullet there, mine lasted about 2 years and the grind size is inconsistent. Seeing as you didn't get a grinder (I see ground coffee) you should. It will make the coffee so much better. **Quality recently roasted beans, freshly ground,** and **filtered water** are the most important aspects in producing a great cup of coffee. They'll get you about 90% of the way. I know this isn't the coffee subreddit and may come accross as unsoillicited advice, but from someone that has gone down this rabbit hole and have about $1500 worth of coffee equipment sittiing on my counter, you should concentrate on those basics. Seems like a very easy thing to fix or some after market company to produce.

Stirring the coffee bed is basically required if you are doing a full batch brew. You can get away with not stirring if you are doing a smaller brew - say 20oz or so. But even still the coffee it makes is good, but not great. I feel like a shill, but the Aiden does a MUCH better job brewing than the TV, but does not have the longevity or simplicity of the TV.

The Moccamaster is a one trick pony. Set (but consistent) temperature, uneven distribution of water over the coffee bed, no blooming without manual intervention, but vey nice industrial design and good pricing. I’m taking my chances with an Aiden and hoping using distilled water treated with TWW will save me from problems down the road. Seems like there’s an opportunity for someone to make and sell a really good reliable drip machine that is capable of handling temperature setting changes, pulsing, blooming, even distribution of water, mechanical agitation of the coffee bed, and maybe a few other things. The market for such a machine exists but remains unfulfilled.

r/JamesHoffmann · If you had to recommend one coffee maker in 2026, what would it be?

Breville Luxe or if you’re into pour over take a chance on an Aiden. IMO best to avoid a Moccamaster for several reasons: no blooming without manual intervention, many cheap plastic parts, and a flume that does not evenly wet the coffee bed. Basically no controls over your brew. MM look great and make good coffee but they’re seriously dated. I’ve had a MM, Luxe and Aiden. Aiden is my daily driver. Best coffee of the three, although the Luxe is very very close and IMO better built.

It has got to be one of the most BIFL items that plugs into a wall and manufactured in 2025. The glass carafe can obviously break if dropped, and can be replaced at reasonable cost. Of course it will need a little bit of maintenance running cleaning cycles, more often if you have hard water. And it makes great coffee. I still make a V60 pour over when I get a real special coffee, but for my "daily driver" specialty coffee, Moccamaster does a great job. It's worth the \~$350 it usually costs, but every couple months it goes down to $250 and under $200 a couple times a year (Prime day and black friday?)

r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

during "prime day" in the summer I snagged a Moccamaster KBGV for $179, couldn't be happier with it, especially given the price. probably a good chance some colors will be under 200 over the next few weeks of sales. one nice thing is that the physical power switch makes it easy to add some automation using a smart plug. I have it start brewing coffee when my alarm goes off in the morning, and, I use the smart plug to automate a bloom stage and turn off the heat plate when it's done.

I did pour-over coffee, aeropress, or moka pots for a long time and even had a pretty good espresso machine for a while. I got a Technivorm Moccamaster last year and love it. I've chosen my preferred bean, dialed in my grind size and amount on my grinder, and now I have consistently amazing coffee every morning, zero hassle, just joy.

How much do you actually care about coffee? Like if you just care that coffee winds up in a cup, a moccamaster is _way overkill_ and the one cup shouldn't even exist imo as it's not really much more convenient than doing the pour over yourself and is very finicky/clogs/etc (at least at its price point). Most people overestimate how much they actually care about the nuances of their coffee. I don't have one, but I think the Ninja Dual Brews are nice because they do a decent job of doing all the things good enough at a not-insane price (pods + single cup pour over + carafe). If I were buying a machine for a whole household of different coffee drinkers I'd either do that or buy the cheapest drip coffee machine I could find with good reviews. As the sole coffee drinker in my house, I have an espresso setup as my daily driver. Figure out what your needs are from the machine and go from there.

They have models whose only difference is the shape of the filter basket. I don't see why you'd even need a total redesign as the electronics could easily fit in space that's already there. They'd probably need a new mold for their outer casing, but the electronic and mechanical differences are pretty small and a lot of it can be done with off the shelf parts.

It’s really great. I switched to decaf and my partner is still using caffeinated coffee so we do two 6-cup pots in the morning and it’s plenty easy and reliable. It fills our 20oz thermoses and a little left over for that first sip while we get ready. If you introduce more components, you have more things to fail. I have enjoyed my friend’s who have nespresso pods, but I won’t buy pods.

We got a zojirushi coffee machine a couple years ago, my gf really wanted it for the timer feature. Well, of course that feature got used about 5 times before it became too much of a hassle to set it up the night before. I also stopped drinking the coffee made in it because it was a straight-up bad machine. The coffee was always bad. Also it took way too long to brew. Also the insulated carafe was crap. It would get cold fast, and was hard to clean with the complex lid and small opening. We caved and got a mochamaster after a year. It brews good coffee, it brews so fast that the no-timer doesn't matter, it has the hotplate to keep it warm for a while, and all the parts are easy to clean. I love my zoji rice cooker and water boiler, they are flawless and have lasted years so far with no signs of stopping. But that coffee machine was awful. (I also didn't like the Zoji insulated bottle I had once, the lid is so complex it's impossible to clean).

I had the same concern when I bought mine. As some one else said, fill it the night before and flip the switch. You'll have the coffee very quickly. Heck, if you're just making two cups, you could probably have it done in the time it takes you to use the bathroom. With my last pot, one of the first things to break was the built in timer.

I can have good coffee at home whenever I want but I agree it does needs to be cleaned and descaled 3-4X a year to keep it working at its best. The cleaning and descaling process is quite easy. You just have to remember to do it.

It probably doesn’t brew better than either of our $8 Braun percs from the 80s, but I also bought those for looks bc I’m actually a pour over dude that’s a Braun fan. Can confirm that a programmable wall plug is the answer for these coffeemakers. However, if you don't already own one, I reccomend the version with the insulated caraffe (rather than glass). It will stay warm for hours once you seal the lid. Re: Grind, it's overkill but the **Fellow Ode** grinder has flat (vs. conical) burrs which are well suited for drip coffee (most high end grinders have conical burrs that are optimized for espresso). It's also easily repairable and burrs can be easily replaced or upgraded.

I don’t think it’s gonna be right for you to be completely honest. It’s a great brewing machine; I don’t know about its longevity. But it’s tailored for people who want to fine tune their drip coffee and get the best possible result. The target audience is gonna probably get a nice burr grinder, dial in their beans, and use filtered or re-mineralized water. If you aren’t going to do any of that, this machine isn’t going to get you any better results than other, cheaper drip machines.

It’s a bit more plastic than would be liked, but the Bunn Heat’N’Brew is a pretty solid option. Easy to clean and relies on gravity for the water flow so it’s a simpler design. As long as you descale it regularly (I recommend Urnex Dezcal), it should last a long time. One warning is that the water flow is powerful, so the Bunn branded filters are recommended. They have taller walls than the generics and won’t collapse. They are also not that expensive. Alternately, the Moccamaster is a good option, if more expensive. Sometimes you can find it on sale for near the price of the Bunn.

r/Moccamaster · Help! Weak tasting coffee

I’ve now gone down to a level 19 on my grinder and it seems to have done the trick. It’s interesting how moccamaster (and a lot of other people on the internet) recommends doing a medium course and states that store bought ground coffee is too fine. Where I am now for grind size it is much finer than store bought pre ground coffee and I am also grinding it much finer than my old drip coffee maker as that was ground to a level 36 compared to 19 now with the moccamaster.

r/Moccamaster · Help! Weak tasting coffee

Ok will try this. With the last grind size I did this morning it did back up the basket and cover all the grounds which I thought would result in a nice strong cup but for some reason it was pretty bland. I will try even finer thanks!

r/Moccamaster · Help! Weak tasting coffee

I am also confused as everything I’ve seen online praises moccamaster and I honestly love the simplicity and style of it but I just haven’t been able to get as strong tasting coffee out of it as my previous zwilling drip coffee maker. With the zwilling I would grind at a 36 and the coffee came out great, nice and strong and full bodied. When I use that same grind size for the moccamaster it tastes weak/watered down. I’ve now tried grind sizes all the way down to 19 (which I had to stop for a moment so it didn’t overflow the basket) to 52. I have also tried a bunch of grind sizes in between. The only thing I can think of is the shower head doesn’t saturate as well as the zwilling leading to under-extracted coffee in some parts of the brew basket.

r/Moccamaster · Help! Weak tasting coffee

The highest I have done on my grinder has been a 48 and at that level it also tasted quite weak. I can go even courser but from what I understood finer=stronger/more bitter and courser=weaker/more sour. I am willing to give it a shot though!

It's only buy it for life because the company stands by it and sends you free replacement parts or does more than you send it back for when it needs a repair. With all the stuff they replaced when I sent my 14-year-old one back when it started leaking it was worth the trouble to send it back twice because they didn't repair the leak the first time. That service was actually $99. They didn't make me pay for shipping the second time since they misdiagnosed and failed to repair the leak. I just don't like the Plastics they're very low quality and they are not durable. Plus I don't want to drink anything that contacts plastic when it's hot especially but pretty much not ever. Also the spray pattern it's pretty weak compared to some other pots now on the market from what I've read and seen.

r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

All true. But $60 for a switch shipped from Europe still doesn’t meet my definition of Buy it for life. The sum of the cost of all parts bought as replacement parts would probably be $800. (Not a researched number. Probably can’t buy every part.) Good point about the five-year warranty.

r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

Short answer:no. I have one and I like it but I got it for $200 on Black Friday and that is still overpriced. The boiler unit (the metal tower) itself is well made and reliable. The plastic ancillary parts are made of abysmally cheap flimsy plastic. If you are in Europe you can get replacement parts, but in the US the only parts you can get access to are the aforementioned plastic parts. They will not sell any of the internal parts. Instead, you can send it to them to fix for $100. That does not qualify for buy-it-for-life in my opinion. It does make good coffee but no better than any other less expensive SCA certified brewer. A Bunn HB makes coffee just as good for $139.

r/JamesHoffmann · Ratio 6 vs. Moccamaster vs. something else?

Oxo is a well made machine but I had the same problem as mastley3. Oxo was great and gave me a refund and even paid for return shipping. I agree it was the silicone gasket and silicone is non-leaching and non-shedding. Also, it was more smell than taste. I have a moccamaster. Its fine but highly over-rated and way over-priced. I think the Ratio 6 could be good but its kind of ugly and I haven’t tried one. The bigger Ratio is gorgeous. Another I will recommend is Bunn HB. Great coffee and great price.

r/JamesHoffmann · Need Help with the Best Drip Coffee Maker 2026?

Get the KBGV glass one. The burner on the moccamaster has its own heating element and does not get as hot as cheaper machines that use the water heater to heat the hotplate. Coffee degrades within an hour no matter how you keep it. For those in-between situations I decant into a third-party thermal carafe. The Moccamaster carafes are of the vacuum type which are fragile and they are $85 to replace. Plus the thermal machines are uglier than the glass ones.

    Carafe thermiqueQualité d'infusionQualité-prix
r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

The lid and handle on the glass carafe on mine won’t even stay together to pour while raising the lid. The little nubs slip out of the thin flimsy flanges. I think quality can vary from unit to unit, as the common problem with chips on the heatplate demonstrates. That’s why you can have some people aggravated and others distrusting their experience. To me that also suggests a deficiency in their quality control.

r/JamesHoffmann · If you had to recommend one coffee maker in 2026, what would it be?

The chinese label may be obsolete but come on, it’s not racist. If you’ve never heard complaints of the plastics being cheap you’ve never visited the moccamaster subreddit. Even technivorm admits they look cheap but says its because they don’t use toxic additives, which is ridiculous because neither do Oxo and most other high end coffee machines and they’re plastics aren’t thin and flexy and are are dishwasher safe.

They get the beans to water ratio right for the first time and are blown away by how good the Moccamaster is. I'd start with getting the beans to water ratio right first. Also check the distribution of the water over the beans and stir if necessary. See how that tastes. You can also check the temp of your water to see if it's out of range. If you have horrible water distribution and temperature then consider upgrading. That being said, I like my Moccamaster but was fine with my old machine.

I think if I'm honest with myself, I can't find a huge difference between drip coffee makers. These forums are filled with people willing to spend way more than me, on coffee stuff. Yes pour over can be better if you do it right, just take lots of practice. Espresso is great if your willing to experiment a ton and if you are adding milk, then it doesn't matter how crappy the shot is. And I just want a cup of coffee. The Moccamaster is well liked but the shower head is just stupid, but still may be worth it to some. I currently have the Zojirushi Zutto, because at the time it was SCA certified, but I cracked the carafe, but luckily not leaking. They want over half the price of the coffee maker for a replacement carafe, so if it receives further damage it goes in the trash. I looked at all the current SCA certified coffee makers and most have Amazon ratings of 4.0 or less which means the coffee geeks love it, but the common people don't. When it's time for a replacement, I'll probably go back Cuisinart as I've had great luck with them and they are well love by everyone except coffee geeks. That is just my 2 cents.

The grinder and beans are more important honestly. If you’re brewing store bought pre ground coffee, you’ll probably think the Moccamaster isn’t much better than your current set up. Once you go down the rabbit hole of amazing coffee, you’re going to learn quickly that a good grinder is very important. Someone mentioned the Baratza Encore, which is good grinder, but for drip coffee and pour overs I would suggest the Baratza Virtuoso instead. It’s definitely an investment, but it’s not a huge investment in comparison to some other grinders. I feel like it’s a good starting point if it’s not going to break your bank. I think once you make this change, you’ll understand why getting freshly roasted beans and a good grinder will take your coffee from “fine” to “wow, this is really good coffee “. And yes when you do these two things and add in the Moccamaster, you’ll see why we love it!

r/Moccamaster · Is upgrading to a Moccamaster actually worth it if I’m fine with my cheap drip machine?

I've been drinking coffee for more than 30 years. In the last 20, I've bought more "cheap" coffee makers than I can recall, easily eclipsing a one-time investment in a Moccamaster (especially if you target Prime Day or Black Friday). I was dubious as the idea of the "golden cup" rating for coffee makers. My drip coffee satisfied me every morning. Could it really get better? So when we moved into a new house, Prime Day coincided with that move and so I bought a Moccamaster to celebrate (and the color matched, which pleased the wife greatly). Boy, was I wrong about how "good" my coffee had been. Now I have two machines (one in a downstairs den so I can brew a pot on the weekend if my wife wants to sleep in a bit and she can start a fresh pot upstairs) and I drink 1-2 pots a day most days. Almost 2 years in, and I still marvel like a kid at Christmas how good my coffee is. Importantly, I am using: \- The same beans I've always used \- The same grinder I've always used \- The same filtered water I've always used The only thing that's different is the brewer. **If you think your coffee is good now and you aren't using a "golden cup" certified brewer, then unless your taste buds are simply not tuned to discern, you'll absolutely notice a significant flavor difference.** Speaking from direct, biased-to-not-believe-it-until-I-tried-it experience.

I’m very much a fresh grind and pour over Chemex die hard but after years of crying about having to spend 10 minutes without coffee in the morning, I’ve succumbed to a night grind and Moccamaster with smart plug morning brew. Honestly…it’s amazing.

r/BuyItForLife · My coffee maker needs replacement - but is Moccamaster more hype than BIFL?

Moccamaster is great. Mine is 5 years old and makes superior coffee every day. I have the insulated carafe. The secret to better coffee is to temporarily remove the carafe and stir the grounds in the hot water a bit before replacing the carafe. I also balked at the price for what is really a very basic drip machine, but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one once this one finally wears out.

r/BuyItForLife · My coffee maker needs replacement - but is Moccamaster more hype than BIFL?

We had one in an office I worked in. So we made probably 3-4 pots per day. It was still going strong 6-7 years later when I left. I wouldn’t exactly say they are repairable, but they do sell some replacement parts. That said, I got an Oxo 8-Cup Coffee maker for home because they’re a lot cheaper for one. It’s Specialty Coffee Association certified. It has a thermal carafe and no hot plate. So it makes a good cup of coffee and doesn’t burn it. I can’t tell you if it’s BIFL, but I’ve had it for a couple of years and would recommend it. Now for grinders you can’t beat the repair support for Baratza grinders. They repair them for you for a set price or you can order all the parts yourself. (Outside the US the shipping kills you to have them repair it though).

Coffee Chronicler summarized it well: "The Moccamaster represents a completely different era of tech. It's a simple, modular device that can easily be repaired. The complete opposite of the Aiden. A lot of the arguments that can be made for regular car vs EV are probably also valid here. Do you value modern tech and smart functions over a more basic design that has stood the test of time? Coffee-wise Aiden takes the crown"

Technivorm Moccamaster is generally considered the best drip coffee maker. It not only makes the best tasting drop coffee, but it also repairable. The price reflects this. I don't own one, I have an espresso machine and aero press, but it is generally considered one of the best. Coffee overview: if you under extract coffee it is sour tasting, if you over extract it gets a bitter/burnt taste. Water temperature , extraction time, grind size, and  age all affect the taste. The coffee bean roast affects the overall flavor profile of the coffee. The different methods of making coffee have trade offs.  I won't go into the different methods since those have been covered, but I will say that espresso machines are an expensive rabbit hole and I don't recommend going down it unless you reach the limits of the other options and are willing to deal with the learning curve and cost of getting into espresso.

Technivorm with a $10 smart plug so you can start it brewing on a schedule or while you’re laying in bed in the AM. Machine is BIFL. When you have additional budget buy a Bartaza Encore grinder, also BIFL. Purchase high-quality freshly roasted beans and you are set for exceptional coffee without the labor or hassle of manual pour-over, french press, or the years long endeavor and thousands of dollars spend of learning how to pull great espresso shots.

    r/BuyItForLife · Need a quality coffee maker

Even a 20dollar machine should NOT make your coffee taste like burnt plastic lol. Those were obviously defective. Can't go wrong with it from a value perspective. 5 years of guarantee and the possibility to buy spare parts is just great. It's also the most recommended coffee machine in this sub for a good reason.

    r/BuyItForLife · Need a quality coffee maker

Number one premise for good tasting coffee ist freshly ground coffee. A 20 dollar filter machine will do fine, if you grind your beans just before making the coffee. As to the kinds of setups. The world of coffee is very big and there are many ways of brewing. If you want to spend around 200 bucks for a set and forget machine, the Moccamaster is the absolute winner. You put freshly ground coffee in, flip the switch and wait a few minutes- done. But again- the quality of each cup is dependant on a lot of things with good coffee beeing the number one factor. If you only need small amounts of coffee and you are willing to put some time into making it, then go for a handfilter setup. Look at Hario for example. It's like a filter machine without the machine. You have to put hot water into the filter yourself. But in exchange it's super cheap, gives you a lot of freedom and will probably never break- it's just a piece of plastic. If you were to go this route, I'd suggest to read up on grinders and water filters. You could get a handfilter + quality grinder + a water filter (filtered water is important for coffee but you can definitely start without) and some high quality coffee beans for less than 200 bucks.

r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

Well I'm a big coffee snob and the first day I made coffee with it I was driving to work drinking it and going "man is it in my head because I was so excited to try it or is this coffee insanely good?" Then I got a text from my wife saying "holy shit this is the best coffee I've ever had in my life." Now it turned her into a coffee snob as well and ruined pretty much any other coffee for her. I probably never would've spent that much on it myself before ever trying it so I'm so glad I put it on our wedding registry. If it ever dies on me I definitely will get another.

r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

No problem! And yeah I'm not sure, I guess either way though it all comes down to making it and then drinking it rather than leaving it sitting. Mine doesn't heat the actual carafe at all, just heats the water and brews then it's just sitting there in the carafe. On my days off I typically make myself enough for two cups so if I take a while to get to my second cup I have to stick it in the microwave. Obviously that cup isn't as good as the fresh one, but that'll probably be the case one way or the other. Now that I'm sitting here thinking about this I guess I probably should just pour it right in the big Yeti-style cup I use on the drive to work as soon as it's done brewing lol

r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

I go by the little table that's in the Moccamaster manual, that's always made great coffee for me and I've never felt a need to try changing it up. I grind with a Baratza Encore set to 24 although I've read that the number settings can vary unit to unit so each person might have to find what's right for theirs for different brewing methods. My favorite coffee is a single origin Peruvian from a local coffee shop called Shenandoah Joe. Because of price though I only make that occasionally, my daily morning coffee is the "Simply Nature" Peru that you can get at Aldi and some other grocery stores.

I love mine. It's not the absolute best in terms of flavour because there isn't much ability to customize the brew. But its extremely consistent. If you have your own grinder you can make most coffees taste very good as long as you adjust the grind size to taste. It's the best choice IMO if your priority is consistency and long life. The boiler and body of the machine is built like an absolute tank, and everything else is easily replaceable.

r/BuyItForLife · UPDATE: 2 weeks ago I asked "What's the best no-frills coffee maker", and after 400+ recommendations, I bought my mom the Moccamaster

The difference between a pour over (done correctly) with it's distinct clarity and "purity" of taste - can really only be understood if tasting a specialty coffee that fits your taste. An electric brewer does not produce the same level of clarity, its "muddier" - but that muddiness can be good and sought after - for example, if you have a good decaffeinated coffee (dark roasted huila) - it actually fits better to be made with an electric brewer than a pour over. Also - the coffee tastes VERY differently if you brew only one cup worth of water in the moccamaster - but as soon as the water has been pumped and before all water has passed the filter - pour the coffee and add water instead - the last bit usually contains so much bitterness and "dirty" flavors that only damages the flavor. An electric brewer can muddy a bad coffee and make it taste really good - which is kind of funny. Source: I experiment with a lot of coffee techniques, cheap and very expensive coffee - i truly love it. There is so much complexity to coffee that translates into very different taste, not just a note here and there but actually as different as comparing pepsi, coca cola and other colas - its cola, but they taste VERY different - you get that effect from the same coffee depending on a lot of factors. Some factors that affect the taste a lot from the same coffee: * Time after being ground * How roasted it is * How hot the water is when brewing * Method of brewing (aeropress, pour over small, pour over big, mocca pot, electric brewers all have different taste) * Coffee / water ratio brew - 15g 200ml + 200ml cold/warm water is very, very different from 15g 400ml brew. * and more Also; as with anything - whatever you prefer is correct - we all like different things.

Moccamaster if you want a machine and need to brew for more than one person, otherwise a chemex or hario v60 are hard to beat but you’ll also need a gooseneck kettle with temp control. Grinder will make more difference than brewing gear. For single pour overs; save money and get a quality hand grinder ~$100. If you’re willing to invest in something more robust, something like an ode gen 2 is recommend ~$400.

In particular, most high-quality coffee makers have quite narrow output ranges. I'm curious what the purpose behind needing a removable reservoir is. If the output range was negotiable, the Moccamaster recommended by a sibling commenter has a "semi-removable" reservoir (it's screwed in but the entire machine is easy to disassemble).

r/ProductQuery · Finally tossing my ancient coffee maker... what's everyone buying these days that actually lasts?

I bought a Moccamaster. It’s expensive. Got it on sale on Amazon. I’d wait for a sale. It’s built to be repaired. There is science behind drip coffee. Most makers don’t get hot enough. I use half as much coffee as I used to. I can slow the speed at which the water passes through the grounds. Had a Bunn that keeps water hot. You make a pot by displacing the hot water with fresh water. It makes a pot very quickly. Parents also had one. They tend to eventually leak. Ideally, make an entire pot before taking any of it. The initial coffee will be stronger than the later coffee. I prefer cone filters. Had a Zojirushi that made hot coffee but the pump eventually failed. I’ve used an electric kettle to heat water and then poured over the grounds myself. The kettle had temperature settings. And I would pour the water through the grounds twice. The first time would be plain water. The second would be the brewed coffee. Knew a guy who would use 2 filters and would pour over the grounds twice. They make filter holders to put over a vessel to make drip coffee this way. If you like tea, hot chocolate, etc, this is very flexible. In case you want to venture into other coffee styles. You want a coarser grind for French Press. The grounds stay in contact with the water. Drip coffee just passes through the grinds. You don’t want to heat / cook brewed coffee. So, I would recommend against a percolator, which keeps circulating the brewed coffee through the heating element. They are great for large gatherings. Just put the coffee into a thermos. I also have an espresso maker and a grinder. Espresso uses high pressure to force hot water through a very fine (like flour) grind of coffee beans.

Honestly, the fact that your old machine lasted long enough to become "ancient" is already a pretty good endorsement for buying simple over fancy 😅 The people I know who get 5-10+ years out of a coffee maker usually end up with boring recommendations: Moccamaster, Bonavita, Oxo, or a basic Cuisinart. Fewer moving parts, fewer smart features, fewer things to break. My rule is simple: if the marketing spends more time talking about Wi-Fi than coffee, I'm probably looking elsewhere.

Personally, if the timer is non-negotiable and you want something that could realistically last 10+ years, I’d spend the extra money on a Moccamaster and be done with it. The upfront cost hurts, but replacing a $60 coffee maker every couple of years gets old fast.

r/BuyItForLife · Looking for a different coffee maker!

Some Ninja machines don’t actually meter water—they just run the whole reservoir, which is frustrating. If you want true brew size control, look at the Breville Precision Brewer or even a Cuisinart DCC-3200. If durability matters most, Moccamaster is hard to beat but less customizable.

I assume Moccamaster will probably be the best suggestion, but I’ve been using a regular Mr. Coffee 10 cup brewer for 6 years of daily use and not had any problems. It’s programmable and has an insulated carafe that keeps the coffee hot for quite awhile without heating it further or making it taste bad. I’ve used it with a Goldtone washable filter the entire time, and been happy with it. Mine was like $70 but they’re probably $100+ at this point. A Moccamaster is probably $300-400, so I guess it depends on your budget. Bunn and Ninja make similar ones to the Mr. Coffee I have for around the same price they are now, but I can’t speak to how long those will last.

I have both the Moccamaster (probably the most classic and robust brewer around) and Ratio 6, and both are great and simple but not cheap. I prefer the Ratio 6. It has a greater capacity and is a flat bottom brewer, which I think makes a better cup (just a personal preference). Fairly easy to use for multiple cups….. Moccamaster. Pair it with a decent grinder (breville, or baratza) and it’s as easy as putting beans in grinder, push grind button, put ground coffee in filter, filter in moccamaster, fill water in reservoir, push brew. For single cup use. Still get a grinder, and pair it with a aero press. (This is the more affordable route) No matter what equipment you get, it won’t make a difference if you’re not using fresh beans and grinding before brew. Those two factors alone will improve your coffee at home.

I tend to start at 35 on my grinder and adjust up or down depending on how it tastes. Other than that I press go and good coffee comes out 15g per 250ml in. Are you sure you're not getting a bypass problem with your filters?

r/BuyItForLife · Drip Coffee maker with mostly steel parts

I think you'd be better off learning about different types of plastics and the dangers of exposing them to hot water (there are some that are totally safe for exposure to hot water, but those don't get features in scary online articles). Most reputable manufacturers use PP (polypropylene) or other similar food-safe plastics. You're more likely to find problematic materials in older (retro-chic) or cheaper units. Steel isn't a great choice as it's a great thermal conductor, and works like a heat wick for hot coffee. It's actually *very good* at cooking coffee down. It isn't a health issue, but you're less likely to get a pleasant tastic cup of coffee. For true plastic-free but still high quality coffee, Chemex might be the way to go. Or, either a MoccaMaster or BonaVita that simulates pour-overbwith a showerhead, but replace the brew basket with something else. Glass/ceramic maybe? Honestly you're better off learning about plastics than trying to Frankenstein a plastic free coffee maker.

r/Moccamaster · Help! Weak tasting coffee

My Ode 2 grinder gets set 6-7. You might also want to watch the grounds as you brew next time. I've had a issue with a few coffees where I get a floating island of dry coffee grounds in the brew basket. If I keep an eye on the first 1/4 of the water to come through and give a quick stir as soon as there's enough water to float everything it's good for me. Also... what filters are you using? I only use Moccamaster paper filters as they are known to work well (and it's one fewer item to troublehshoot if things go wrong... might be worth buying a box just to eliminate possibilities).

r/BuyItForLife · What is the best drip coffee maker currently in the market?

If he wants something that nails **taste, reliability, and low maintenance**, I’d point him straight to the Technivorm Moccamaster—it’s widely considered the gold standard for drip because it brews at proper temperatures for optimal extraction and is built to last years (even decades). If he want a slightly more modern, feature-rich option, the Breville (Sage) Precision Brewer is excellent—it gives you control over brew strength and temperature while still being easy to clean and consistent. Bottom line: Moccamaster = best for “set it and forget it” reliability and taste, Breville = best if you want more control without going full coffee nerd.

r/JamesHoffmann · Need Help with the Best Drip Coffee Maker 2026?

If he want something that just works with minimal fuss, go with the Oxo Brew 9-Cup Coffee Maker—it consistently hits the sweet spot between ease of use, solid brew quality, and straightforward cleaning without feeling overly “techy.” The Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Brewer is arguably the most durable and best-performing long-term, but you’re paying a premium for that reliability and slightly more hands-on simplicity. I’d skip the Aeropress Original Coffee Press and Ninja DualBrew Pro Specialty Coffee System for your case—they’re great, but either too manual or too feature-heavy for someone who just wants consistent, no-headache coffee.

r/JamesHoffmann · Finally have a budget for a proper coffee maker, where do I even start if i need the best coffee maker?

I've got the Fellow Opus grinder, some cheapish but reliable scales, and a Moccamaster One Cup - and I couldn't be happier with my set-up. I'm the same as you, I have a couple of black cups in the morning and that's me sorted. I do have a V60 and an Aeropress, but I just can't be bothered with them vs. grinding, chucking it into a filter, and letting the Moccamaster make me a beautiful, clear, cup. Only things I regret: \- I wish I had the Moccamaster that made a bigger serving. The one cup is great for me, but it'd be nice to be able to make a carafe when I have people round. \- The Opus can retain grounds like nothing else. I love it, and I'm not looking to replace it, but I do have to give it a good shake and use the lid as a 'bellow' to blow a lot of the grounds out

r/BuyItForLife · Best Drip Coffee Maker

We finally made the switch to a Moccamaster last year after years of making pour over coffee daily in our Chemex. The Moccamaster makes an excellent pot of coffee, is super easy to clean all the parts, takes up less space than most drip coffee makers, and is a no-frills easy to use machine. We still have our Chemex as well as an AeroPress, French press, and Moka Pot, but rarely use them anymore.

r/BuyItForLife · Any thoughts on the Simply Good coffee maker?

That is true we don't know yet but I would not be surprised if proof comes out in time as there does seem to be a lot of studies and research in motion. I have not read any research papers myself so cannot comment besides the few articles I have read that try to cite them. I would also assume that big industries are trying to suppress because of how profitable plastics are. The beauty of publishing research is that it can be challenged and debated, so glad to see there is good discussion on the topic. I am very well aware that correlation does not mean causation so we will continue to see the impacts of plastics on our health as the body of research grows. I plan to start changing my lifestyle by removing plastics as I can especially for things like food storage containers because I would rather be on the safer side. I have been interested in this no plastic coffee maker because I do consume a lot but also have been very interested in the moccamaster because of how long it has been around.

r/JamesHoffmann · If you had to recommend one coffee maker in 2026, what would it be?

Honest answer from someone who went down the same rabbit hole after watching Hoffmann — the machine matters less than you think, the grinder matters more. But since you asked for one recommendation: **If you're in India:** Agaro Imperial espresso machine (₹9,990). It's the one machine I've seen people actually stick with long term at a reasonable price. 20-bar pressure, die-cast aluminium boiler, steam wand for milk drinks. It's not a Moccamaster but it punches well above its price point and parts are actually available here. **If you're outside India:** Breville Precision Brewer is genuinely the right answer for drip. SCA certified, bloom phase, consistent temperature. Fellow Aiden if you want the tech-forward option but it's pricier. The Moccamaster is the "buy it once" answer but it's purely a drip machine — no milk, no espresso. If you want versatility the Breville wins. One thing Hoffmann doesn't say enough — whatever machine you get, buy fresh beans and grind them yourself. A ₹3,000 grinder + decent machine beats a ₹30,000 machine with pre-ground supermarket coffee every time. For Indian buyers specifically I put together an unbiased breakdown here with what's actually available and worth buying: [pickryt.com/blog/best-coffee-maker-2026-india](http://pickryt.com/blog/best-coffee-maker-2026-india)

James totally ragged on the Aiden in his YouTube review. I'm also looking for more of a set-it-and-forget-it machine. Seems like the Moccamaster has the easiest workflow out of that, Ratio 6, and Fellow Aiden. Fellow Aiden seems much more designed for people who want to customize their brew.

The Moccamaster will probably last longer as it is a simpler machine. The ratio 6 will probably make a better cup of coffee. The biggest problem with the Moccamaster is the narrow shower head. The ratio does not have that. Which is why I would expect it makes a better cup of coffee. Though I don't know for sure as I've never used the Ratio. I do own a Moccamaster. It makes a good but not life changing cup. And it can take some time to dial in the brew. You really need to grind coarser than you would expect.

I like [this one](https://d1vsa0evaa8kw9.cloudfront.net/?q=reddit.FAQPad413/need_help_with_the_b) too. As long as the machine brews consistently and isn’t annoying to clean it. Its good enough for me.

I’m a Moccamaster fan, big time. It takes a good grinder to max out any coffee maker. For a well priced hand grinder look at the Kingrinder K6 or for an electric I’d say Fellow Ode 2 (for filter coffee). You can find Fellow Ode 2 on marketplace and eBay for less than retail. Or for cheaper ($200ish) the DF54 is a good entry point. The Aiden and Breville luxe are great, but the Moccamaster is a lifetime (repairable) machine.

How much coffee per brew or per day? Anything from 200ml to 500ml I’d recommend a V60, a Kalita Wave or a Chemex.  Anything above that I’d recommend a Moccamaster. I’d recommend it for anything 250-500ml too but I don’t think it would be necessary and… I love pour over too much.  The most important thing is the grinder. What’s your budget for it and would you prefer manual or electric? Also, proper water and good coffee beans are kinda the second most important thing. Literally the brewer is the last on the list.

r/JamesHoffmann · If you had to recommend one coffee maker in 2026, what would it be?

I think the answer will heavily depend on who you’re asking and what they like. I liked the idea of doing manual brews because espresso feels fiddly and I’m the only regular coffee drinker at home. Manual brews gets me to where I want relatively cheaply and easily. It also lets me spend more on beans rather than machines and accessories. Had a moccamaster and syphon at one point, both great pieces of equipment, will last ages, didn’t work for my use case because I would rather wash a single dripper vs a whole setup. Ultimately the “best” is really one that you’ll use regularly. To answer your question, if I had to pick 1 manual brewer, I like the Hario switch since it gives you the flexibility to tinker a bit with immersion. Paper is readily available, plenty of recipes to try, and relatively cheap on its own.

Cleaning the carafe lid is absolutely impossible with the overcomplicated design they went with. Mine ended up mouldy inside, black flakes were falling out when shaking it, asked Amazon for a replacement part and they offered a full refund instead. And before you think I neglected maintenance, I was running Pulycaff cleaning cycles regularly, using more water than the carafe could hold, specifically so it would go up inside the carafe lid. Was a great brewer for almost 2 years but then it became a health hazard, would 100% not recommend. Ended up getting a Fellow Aiden afterwards and it is much more capable, with no risks of anything getting mouldy over time. My parents have a Moccamaster and that also makes great coffee, but it's much less flexible in terms of customization. Can vouch for both of these

Your requirements are a perfect match for the Moccamaster. It has an on-off switch, and depending on the model you choose, that's it in terms of controls. It's super-easy to clean - the brew basket is easy to remove and swish out, and the carafe is a quick clean. As for durability/longevity, Moccamaster comes with a 5-year warranty, replacement parts are readily available, and the company offers repair/refurbishment of older units. Really satisfied with mine.

r/Moccamaster · Is upgrading to a Moccamaster actually worth it if I’m fine with my cheap drip machine?

No it hasn’t been worth in my opinion. I am a coffee snob, only buy beans from my fav micro roasters, grind my own beans, am careful not to let the hot plate burn for taste. I have not tasted any improvement from the much cheaper ninja drip coffee machine that I replaced. I kinda wish I went with a different brand. The moccamaster seems to be marketed more on “longevity”, the ease and ability to clean, quality of manufacturing. But lacking in my opinion in a few features, for example ability to brew without the hotplate on. And the head that drips water is an odd shape that I can’t help feel is not optimal for spreading water across the entire reservoir.

Another happy Moccamaster owner here. I’ve had mine for around 9 years and use it daily, it’s still working like new. Only complaint I would have is the half/partial pot function. There’s a little switch on the filter basket that doesn’t work very well. Doesn’t much matter for me as we brew full pots. YOUR THE BEST. The economy is crap, and everyone is suggesting to go spend $350.00 on a machine??? With that said, the economy is crap, and I don't want to buy coffee makers every other 2 year's. This morning, after 7 years of not so good service, my Mr. Coffee machine died. It was a sad day, today. I'm currently at work, trying to do my job, but cant help but to think about tomorrow morning..... I must find a good machine today! Under $250. My Mr Coffee was $80.00 @ best buy. Like I said not the best machine. Taste and all, not so good, but better than Duncan donuts. I'm thinking to get an OXO if I can find one in stores. Thank you, and happy Holidays!!

r/Costco · CHEFMAN Drip Coffee Maker, any reviews?

I bought this yesterday and I thought I’d share my review since this thread was the first one popped up when I google it. I was not able to find much review on it but it’s from Costco so I thought I’d give it a try. TL;DR I would recommend it. I usually make my coffee manually in the morning with a pour over and grind my beans right before with the Ode from fellow. Wanted something faster and with a timer. This one delivers. It doesn’t taste as good (still very good for a drip) as the pour over but it saves me a lot of times and it can make 12 cups, 3x more comparing to the pour over. While I am sure a moccamaster or Aiden would be much better but if you don’t have the budget or don’t feel your dough is better spent on something else. This is the way to go. It even matches my ode grinder in appearance. Sure it’s made of plastic but I am not complaining bc of the price. I gave mine a was (butcher board wax) and it shines pretty nicely. I hear someone complained about the touch screen and I just want to add the touch buttons are very responsive and lights indicators are also very clear. No issue for me to operate at all. If you want something that’s convenient and makes 12 cups, give this a try. I was looking for a review similar to this but didn’t find it. If you think this is helpful give it a like to boost.

I have one, got it earlier this year after looking into upgrading. Happy with it. It makes better coffee than our old $70 built-in whole bean slicer one. And yes, slicer, the cheap blade coffee grinders aren't that good. Technivorm did have a bit of a sale recently for black Friday, so they do 'go on sale.' Coffee quality makes a difference too, whole bean with a good burr grinder is going to be fresher than pre ground, and that generally improves taste. We got an oxo conical burr grinder, it's a lot more consistent than blade grinders. That's under $100, you can certainly spend more. I guess it's not a need, you can use pre ground for a while and get a grinder later. But any pursuit of good coffee will lead to fresh ground from while beans. The last piece of the puzzle is maintenance/cleaning. You want a descaler (removes mineral build up) and a cleaner (removes oils). And do it on a regular cycle. Techniworm recommends every ~3 months. Dirty coffee machines will negatively impact flavor. It's not hard, just amounts to running several rounds of water through the machine.

The different types of brewing do give different flavours and quality, but it doesn’t sound like you want to buy them all to try the differences. Do you recognise the difference between espresso from a coffee shop - maybe an Americano if you only drink black, and a drip coffee? The ones that come out of big batch vessels? I doubt you want to get a full espresso setup which is way over your budget. Or go to fully manual brewing with French press or pour over if you’re asking for a coffee ‘machine’. As someone else suggested the best or BIFL options will be either a Moccamaster or bonavita.

The Cup-One is their single cup brewer. The glass carafe automatic drip stopper models have a half carafe setting which will slow the flow rate for when you aren't brewing a full carafe and the manual drip stoppers have a half-open setting which achieves the same thing. I've been brewing a half liter of coffee using a KBT and the half-carafe setting for about 4 years now, only issue is that I occasionally forget the reset the manual drip stopper. I do like having the flexibility to make a 1.25 liters when we have guests or my wife would like to have coffee.

honestly for all those boxes, Moccamaster is the answer. yeah it's around $300-350 but it checks every single one of your criteria \- taste: brews at the proper temp (195-205°F) which most drip makers don't. SCAA certified so the extraction is legit. makes coffee that tastes like pour over basically \- reliability: these things last 10-20+ years easily. all the parts are replaceable if something does break. it's the only drip maker that's actually buy it for life quality \- easy to clean: super simple design, no complicated parts. just rinse and descale occasionally \- price: not cheap but reasonable for what you get. way better value than replacing a $100 machine every 2 years if Moccamaster is too much, Bonavita Enthusiast is the best budget option around $150-200. also SCAA certified, brews properly, just not quite as bulletproof long-term Breville Precision Brewer is another solid option if you want more control and versatility, similar price to Moccamaster. [Got some idea through this list](https://www.roastycoffee.com/best-drip-coffee-maker/) so maybe it'll be worth the read for you too So do avoid anything with tons of programmable features and electronics, more stuff to break. simpler is better for reliability

The metal arm is flimsy, the coffee grind holder wobbled, just wasn’t impressed with it at all given all the hype I had read about it. And of course it didn’t work so it’s getting returned. I try to BIFL whenever possible but I wouldn’t put this machine in that category. Totally agree on capsules. They're convenient, but the coffee is just okay and the waste stacks up. For espresso, the Gaggia Classic is a tank if you don't mind a learning curve. r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

I think it's all a matter of perspective. If you're coming from a Keurig then a moccamaster is probably like pour over quality coffee.  If you're doing a pour over then I think a Moccamaster is just a convenience play.  I recognize the coffee won't be as great since it's less customizable than an entirely manual process. I can customize every single aspect of coffee brewing to get the most out of a coffee in a pour over. It's naturally going to be better than an automated machine where I can't adjust as many of the variables.

r/smartbuysforlife · Is the Technivorm Moccamaster actually worth it?

People saying it equals a pour over are wrong. I'm sorry but almost none are. You're buying a very durable coffee maker that's great at getting hot temps. The moccamaster is renowned because of its design that gets hot water (200+ F) immediately.  The problem with most coffee makers is they don't get the water hot enough at all OR it uses about 1/3 of the water tank before it gets up to that hot temp. This is critical to extract flavors in coffee if you're buying higher end coffee that has flavor notes. You want the water to be at the proper temp for the entire duration. You also have the issue that most auto brewers like the Moccamaster aren't customizable enough. The settings will generally put too much water on the grounds if you're making say a 300ml cup and not a 750ml.

Thank you for this answer. I love the taste of my Chemex and that it's plastic-free and never have to worry about replacing parts. But I've always wondered if I was missing out because the Moccamaster reviews are so over the top. Glad I can continue smuggly enjoying the superiority of my daily pour over cup of Joe.

You select the quality of the beans, grinder, grind size, quantity of coffee, quality of water. Moccamaster heats the water to optimal brewing temp. If you don’t do your part you will be disappointed with the results. Make good choices and you will be treated to a great cup.

There are two important points of note here. Firstly, filter coffee machines will never make the best coffee - a manual pour over cup will usually be better, and an espresso machine coffee orders of magnitude better. Secondly, most filter coffee machines are junk and break quickly. You should therefore not buy a Moccamaster because you want amazing coffee, but because you want a reliable, sustainable convenience machine that makes decent coffee easily & will do for years to come. Mine stays beside my bed for a quick morning fix, then I use a Gaggia throughout the day. I bought used, but I'd be a bit disappointed at £250+. Aesthetically speaking it's a design icon though, so consider that if it's relevant to you. It is for me.

Absolutely. Been rocking one for a year now. Exclusively did v60 pour over for the previous six years. I’m used to the routine of weighing out water, beans, grinding, setting up the filter. But now I don’t actually have to do the pour over technique and timing. It still tastes incredible. I flip the switch and walk away to continue waking up. Come back to fresh coffee that gets kept warm. My wife and I go through a liter every morning. So much nicer than trying to brew 800ml pour overs with the biggest v60 and carafe. I have absolutely zero regrets purchasing one

I’ve had one for about 10 years. The plastic is getting old. It doesn’t have the heating element. It also doesn’t keep coffee warm used on an individual basis. Warming up the carafe adds another step. The golden ratio is too strong for my taste. It’s all manual so enjoy the profile of whatever you want. I think the alternatives are better because they also target the correct temperatures. The newer technivorms with the heating element in my opinion are a contradiction to the optimal coffee flavor because basically the coffee cooks.. It’s more marketing and hype granted the internals are pretty good, replacement part should be available but i have an itch to upgrade to a more basic unit. I value a timer as well as heating element, and it probably outweighs the ideal golden de facto technovorm

You can get great cups from one. My understanding is that it’s largely due to its high quality heating element and consistent temperature. The shower head is a bit annoying and doesn’t get all the grounds consistently wet, crazy to me that they haven’t solved this. You ca improve things a bit with one of these shower head inserts but I’ve still found I get the best results with a manual stir with a spoon at the beginning https://coffeepilot.ca/products/shower-head-insert-for-technivorm-moccamaster Shower Head Insert For Technivorm Moccamaster – coffeepilot

You will certianitly have it for life as these are built to last generations. But in my honest opinion, you are overpaying significantly for a machine that has an On/Off switch. I went with the Breville Luxe brewer and I’m very happy with my purchase - it was cheaper than a Moccamaster but even then I feel like I over payed, but it has way more features than the moccamaster.

My wife and I each bought one (unknowingly) for Christmas about 6 years ago (one went back to Williams Sonoma!). It's the best coffee maker we have ever owned. I agree with the buying filters in 100 packs and doing maintenance at those intervals. It makes a damn delicious cup/pot of coffee. I'm not a coffee snob, but it's really good.

Have had mine for a couple of years, on the fence if I think it was worth what I paid for it (think something like $250). As some other have said, the plastic seems a bit flimsy/cheap. I have the glass carafe and surprised that it hasn't broken yet as it's paper thin. Coffee grounds don't seem to be evenly watered and need to be stirred while brewing as the wand and holes don't cover the whole length of the basket. Also, the coating on the hot plate is somewhat sticky (maybe not teflon), so the carafe has to be forced in a bit sometimes. All of these are relatively minor complaints, and I've yet to have to replace/repair after a few years of daily service.

Not equal to a well-made pourover AT ALL!! There simply isn’t an agreed water temperature that is suitable for all coffees and the Technivorm cannot address that. Better than many automatic brewers but anyone that enjoys the flavors one can achieve with a well- crafted pour over will be disappointed.

I bought it because I wanted HOT coffee, not lukewarm coffee as so many auto machines make. It is used twice a day. Still looks great on the counter. When I have moved house, I repack in the original box and carry it with me, the movers don't touch it. Last thing packed, first thing unpacked.

To me this feels like pretty obvious astroturfing but maybe it's just my cynical side. Idk why people are spending this much money on a drip coffee maker. Spend that money on a nice coffee grinder and buy a $50 Chemex or aeropress or just any pour over.

It's a great coffee maker. I have had 3 of them. I've had one of these and 2 with the Metal Carafe. I prefer the metal carafe for keeping the coffee warm. But when our house burned down someone gave us a Fellow Aiden coffee maker. I thought it was kind of silly and the interface not intuitive, but the coffee is brewed as well as my MoccaMaster and I can set a timer via an app, have different custom settings etc. So basically I have gone from the best no frills coffee maker to a very good frills coffee maker and I'm not sure if I'm going to get another Moccamaster. It's hard to go back to not having a timer, but everything else about the MoccaMaster rules.

The water needs to be 195-205F when it hits the grounds. That’s the most basic requirement for a decent coffee maker, and it’s one of the reasons the Moccamaster is recommended all the time - it reaches that temperature, but it does so while also brewing fast and it’s a durable/high quality machine. If yours doesn’t reach that temperature, something is wrong with it. Or maybe you’re just used to using a hot plate or thermal carafe?

I’ve been down the rabbit hole over the years and Drip Coffee is not needing that expensive of a machine imo, pour overs (chemex) make the best coffee especially with a good nice bean grinder with options for grind size (I invested here and it was worth it) and good beans. If I were rich and money was no object then yes I’d get a moccamaster because they look so cool too. My buy it for life is a nice actual espresso machine. I tend to make stovetop coffee (not espresso but makes strong coffee) or countertop cold brew (saves me $ big time in combo with my grinder) but my next upgrade will be to an actual espresso machine for sure!!

Probably can’t go wrong with any one button/switch 12 cup brewer but the cheap option is genuinely a good option. Ninja, OXO, plenty of other decent names. She definitely doesn’t need a $230 moccamaster if she isn’t already grinding fresh beans and worried about specific water temp and optimal extraction.

It's a really old video so you'll just have to do some googling. Shop sales if they're out there. Or call that shop in Seattle to see if any sales are coming up if you want. But -- in all seriousness -- pay whatever is needed. The Moccamaster doesn't feel really solid at first glance since there are a few plastic parts, but the important bits are quality. They heat up quickly and make good coffee quite quickly. Ours is probably 6-7 years old and with occasion de-scaling it is still working like new. Before this we went through a series of various brands that all died within 2-4 years of service.

r/enshittification · Drip coffee makers are garbage.

I get where you’re coming from - over the past few years I’ve tried quite a few coffee makers myself and honestly had some bad experiences too. A lot of them either broke too quickly or had weird build issues that made me give up on them. But I will say this: This Ninja and the Technivorm Moccamaster have been the real standouts for me. Ninja because of how versatile it is (iced coffee, stronger brews, frother, timer, etc.), and Moccamaster because it’s just insanely consistent with flavor and feels like it’ll last forever. Totally different machines, but both made me feel like I finally wasn’t wasting money.

    r/JamesHoffmann · Coffee lovers, what's the best coffee maker/machine?

I did try a similar grind size on my old (very basic) Mr. Coffee and, honestly, the flavor wasn’t even close, still kind of flat and watery compared to the Moccamaster. But you’re totally right, it did force me to nerd out way more on the whole process! Before this, I never thought much about grind size or bean freshness, just scooped some pre-ground stuff and called it a day. 😂 Wild how much of a difference all those little details make when you’re using a better machine.

Alright, after using the [Moccamaster 79112 KBT](https://www.reviewni.com/product/B002S4DI2S) for almost a year now, here’s my honest take. First off, YES, it absolutely lives up to the hype, once you dial things in, it makes the best coffee I’ve ever brewed at home. But fair warning, there’s a bit of a learning curve. You really do need to grind your own beans, and figuring out the right grind size for your taste will take some trial and error. My early batches were meh at best and had me regretting my life choices for a hot minute. 😅 Once I paired it with a decent conical grinder (Shardor at a 36 grind with a dark roast for those curious), I was in coffee heaven. The flavor is rich, bold, and HOT. It stays that way for a good while thanks to the thermal carafe, which is honestly a dream to clean. Super minimal design, just an on/off switch and that’s it, which I love. Downsides? It’s pricey, and honestly, it doesn’t really look or feel like a $$$ machine on the outside. Plus, whoever designed the carafe spout must not drink coffee, because pouring is... an adventure. Still, overall, worth every penny for coffee lovers. Totally recommend!

I can't speak to the longevity. But I did just buy a 40oz "10 cup" Moccamaster KBT for $205. The one with the thermal carafe, a few weeks ago. Previously, I had a $20 Black and Decker drip coffee maker that's still going strong after 10 years. It's a daily machine in the past 5 years. In between machines, I experimented with a Moka Pot clone, French Press, and pour over with Hario v60 gooseneck kettle. A pour over, when done right is really great. I like the French Press and Moka Pot too. Each have their pros and cons, especially in the clean-up phase. The Moccamaster is an automated pour over. For machines, the Moccamaster comes out hotter than the B&D. It's also one of the smoothest cups of coffee I've had. It's super easy to use, especially if you're coffee deprived in the morning. The more I use it, the more I like it. Did I ever think I'd spend 10x the amount I spent on the last coffee machine? No. However, it suits my needs of brewing straight into the carafe and cleanup is super easy.

I got the Kitchenaid Burr grinder before they stopped selling her since she spits grinds everywhere when you do on-demand grinding (it’s better for one bag at a time kind of grinding). Now I have a spice grinder (is it Cuisinart or Capresso idk) and I do a probably-Turkish grind on my coffee and throw her in a Presto percolator and get super crazy poop-inducing coffee. Cheap as hell and if you throw a coffee filter in, no need to deal with grinds in the coffee. There’s so many ways to make insane coffee; experiment with something fun instead of ponying up for a Moccamaster if that’s above your Priceline. Love it!

I would say a Moccamaster is perfect if you’re not a coffee snob because it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of other high end drip machines. The thing doesn’t even have an alarm function to start making your coffee in the morning… because it doesn’t have a clock. This also makes them practically indestructible. I’m getting frustrated with my current drip machine (a Breville YouBrew with the worst Carafe in history), and I’m considering upgrading because I don’t need the bells and whistles.

I have a Keurig K duo 2 100$ because sometimes I want to do a big pot and sometimes I just want one cup I use it with the reusable plastic k cups with either Folgers or Don Francisco’s because I don’t care about those micro plastics or whatever if it breaks I’ll buy a bunn

It does repair easily and is built well. I'm tempted to say you may be a good person for it if you're interested in BIFL quality for coffee brewing. At the risk of making a controversial statement, people who are really into coffee tend to prefer other brewing techniques that give you more control, that I really wouldn't say Moccamaster is a coffee snob thing. Moreso it's a nice machine for when you're sick of cheap coffee makers

r/enshittification · Drip coffee makers are garbage.

They are really simple machines so getting one that is more expensive means it is probably full of features you don't need but that are points of failure. You really need to go high end on drip machines. Like, my programmable Sage (Breville outside of the EU) Precision Brewer is great but it's a 300€ machine. Even a Moccamaster is just a 300€ machine that has two buttons. On/off and half / full can. It's maybe a bit more stylish. It might have a more complex program, it might have higher quality materials. But none of that matters if you don't grind your coffee in the morning. You can throw some store bought pre ground garbage into the cheapest coffee maker you can find and it will taste the same. So just get the 30€ one and replace it every 2 years. Everything between 30 and 300€ is just the 30€ machine with a timer.

    r/BrevilleCoffee · Luxe Brewer Thermal - BDC465 - Review

This new model being about the same price as the precision brewer is a good thing, especially when it invokes luxury in the name.  Being able to remove the the tank makes filling it easier and also easier to clean the tank, though I wonder about long term structural integrity of the upper portion.  The upgrade to the screen is nice and looks easier to view.  Adding more settings to customize brewing is great for coffee nerds.  But the loss of presets, changing the filter type, not being able to use a v60 or having a setting for it, etc is a misstep.  My partner likes that there are those presets so they don't have to mess around with settings and they don't change what I have for my my brew.  Not everyone likes to tinker, it is why my parents like their Moccamaster.   Hopefully Breville just flashes the firmware on this product back to what made the precision brewer so great.

I hate to advocate for Amazon under any circumstances, but there’s one exception - Amazon Warehouse. You can buy something in “acceptable” condition and every time I’ve had it arrive like-new. I think I got my orange Moccamaster for $180 that way. I even got an electric lawn mower for $30 once still in the package. Hard to pass those deals up.

    r/JamesHoffmann · Coffee lovers, what's the best coffee maker/machine?

Look into [OXO's 9-cup machine](https://www.oxo.com/shop/coffee-beverage/coffee-tea/coffee-makers-grinders/barista-brain-9-cup-coffee-maker.html) and the [Moccamaster](https://us.moccamaster.com/collections/thermal-carafe-brewers/products/kbgt?variant=40200137670819). Both machines are frequently recommended and I also have experience with both and agree with the praise they receive. The reason they're pricier than most is their build quality, the consistent and high heat it produces, the design of the water dispersion, and -- yes -- their brand names. Both machines have also been recognized by the Specialty Coffee Association for their quality, which I'm sure is tied up with bureaucracy and isn't the only/best way to assess the quality of a brewer, but still, it's certainly something. Those are the two machines I would personally look at within your price range and I do believe they are worth their price. They both make delicious coffee.

r/Coffee · Microplastics and automatic coffee makers (plus Ratio Six initial impressions review)

Hi All, thought I’d chime in with my recent discovery. I bought a Moccamaster a few months ago and have been bothered by the plastic dripper for all the reasons mentioned here. So, I removed the dripper and mount for it and in its place, an 8 cups chemex fits perfectly right on the hot plate. Now this is a nearly plastic free solution aside from the reservoir which I’m not as concerned with because the water is not heated at that location. Honestly the plastic parts seriously degrade the taste of the coffee anyway. Smell them after a dozen uses, there’s so way to get that old coffee stank out of them and it does impart into the coffee. Using the chemex tastes much better. I plan to further modify this cause I really want to use the carafe that came with the moccamaster. So plan is to use the mounting points for the old dripper to make a stand for a glass V60

r/JamesHoffmann · Finally have a budget for a proper coffee maker, where do I even start if i need the best coffee maker?

I got lazy and tired of messing with pour overs, moka pot, Aeropress, and other “manual” methods but as a way to get started and learn - and make great coffee - they’re good choices, as other responders have noted. A decent hand grinder will make the difference for the manual methods and an automatic drip - I have a Kingrinder K6 and it works well. I take a Switch and the K6 on vacation with me when I’m staying somewhere with a Keurig. I use an Aiden day to day and my wife and I both use it and like it though we’re not chasing new recipes every day. We use an Ode Gen2 grinder for this. The Aiden is expensive and unnecessary so I’ll call it a luxury purchase. Durability isn’t its strong suit - I won’t have to bequeath it to my children when I die. A Moccamaster is the GOAT for durability and long life. Then, on the other side of the kitchen for espresso there’s a third grinder: Lagom Casa and a Lelit Elizabeth espresso machine. Someday, you’ll be writing this same message to someone starting out. Enjoy the journey and learn a bit from each cup!

Bifl machinery requires they use minimal plastic, quality engineering & quality parts. Moccamaster lasts forever because it’s made well; not how it looks on the outside. I will say a ceramic pour over is what I use & there are zero moving parts. It will last forever so long as I don’t drop it.

r/JamesHoffmann · What are the best coffee makers worth buying the MOST out there?

Aiden - You add water, coffee and can just press a button. Like any other coffee maker lol. You can tinker and do more things with setting up pulse, infusion, temperate. But you don’t have to do any of that to make a cup of coffee if you don’t want to. Also the ability to make a really good single cup of coffee is where this machine shines. If you want to overpay for a machine that has seen basically no improvements to it. Like maybe build a shower head that soaks the whole coffee bed. In all likelihood a MM will outlast an Aiden. But you do you really want a machine that can’t even soak the entire coffee bed, to last that long?

Its lasting, but its not remotely repairable. They’re built to eventually break and be repurchased unlike the coffee maker in the photo. I get the point you’re trying to make, but it really doesn’t apply. Its like comparing a piece of plastic to an umbrella. Both work, both keep the rain off, both might even last a very long time, but nobody is making replacements for plastic when they bend in the wind

If you aren’t being particular about your grind, then there’s no point in investing in an expensive coffee maker. The quality of the pot of coffee you’re making has a hard ceiling on it already that won’t be brought higher by a different machine. On the other hand if you have a good grinder and good beans you can make a world-class pot of coffee on the cheapest mr. Coffee machine from walmart. So my advice to the OP is don’t waste your money on the moccamaster. After you have a good grinder and a good espresso machine + milk steamer, and all the kit that goes with those, and after you’ve mastered the pourover, only then should you circle back to consider upgrading your drip brewer.

Unless you just love the design it’s probably not, most good quality coffee makers will last 10 or more years of daily use. You might look at a model that has a thermal carafe so it doesn’t get cool so fast for when you are drinking coffee, bypassing the need to microwave or whatnot. I’ve used cuisinart grind and brews for over 10 years at a time, usually only the grind function quits but they have none grind versions that will probably last longer. For my most recent coffee maker I decided on a bean to cup maker and I’ve found that I absolutely love it, being able to make espresso drinks is a real game changer, but you might not be interested in that and they are more expensive.

Apparently you’re not supposed to do this with the mocca master because internally isn’t not designed that way. I’ve found the 6mins it takes to brew a full pot feels like nothing if my beans are ground, I throw a few scoops in hit the brew start then go have my morning poop/ teeth brushing. If you're spending $400 on a coffee maker, it should have some basic functionality. My $20 "no frills" coffee maker has a timer. I could buy 20 of them for how much this thing costs. My current coffee maker is five years old and still doing it's job. I could buy a brand new machine every five years and I would die before I didn't a cumulative $400. It heats up water and passes it through ground-up beans. That shit doesn't need to cost $400.

r/BuyItForLife · Best Drip Coffee Maker

Another Moccamaster vote. Love mine. Great coffee, easy cleaning, cool look. Only issues: - You must pour the coffee as soon as it’s ready. It burns relatively quickly (I can taste it within 5 minutes) if left in the carafe with the machine on. I know this is true for most coffee makers but I especially noticed this when I bought my MM. - Lack of autostart. Of course this is one of the reasons the MM does last forever - lack of tech. And yes - I know many balk at the thought of autostart - old water? coffee exposed for hours before brewing? Gasp! Honestly though, when you wake up at 5am for work, it’s a useful feature. Other than that, fantastic machine. If you can, they go on a pretty good sale around Black Friday (I’ve seen $65 off) but if not, it’s a small upcharge to pay now to get a machine that should last for years to come.

It wouldn’t be the most sought after drip coffee machine for over half a century if the design was poor. You, and everyone else that makes this complaint, don’t seem to understand one of the most basic concepts of brewing coffee. Why do you think you have this problem and I don’t? Because you have a poorly designed machine? Is my not poorly designed as well? Educating yourself on the brewing process goes a long way in making a better cup of coffee.
