Bonavita

There’s a few key variables to a “good” coffeemaker if you want to get the best out of your beans. You’ll want to look at water temps, flow rate, bed coverage, and consistency to name a few. Brands pay the SCA to test and certify their coffeemakers. They’re not all perfect, but they’re generally a safe bet. They also have a few cheaper options like the Bonavita.

I bought a Bonavita 5-cup coffee maker in 2020. They offered a double glass carafe you could buy online as an add-on carafe to the stainless steel one that comes with the coffee maker. I’ve been using it ever since. It makes a good cup of coffee. I tree the OXO one, but returned it- the Bonavita coffee maker made better tasting coffee. You just press one button and it brews at the correct SCA temperature. It has a “blooming” option which pours the water over in intervals as well. So, I’m happy with the setup.

This is one question that doesn't seem to go away... Reddit has a serious hard on for the Technivorm Moccamaster, but I'm going to give you another recommendation - Bonavita. I own both, and both are SCA-certified and brew excellent coffee. However, the Bonavita wins for me for the following reasons: * It's physically smaller and shorter, and can fit in more people's kitchen well. * It's easier to clean * It extracts better and brews coffee a couple degrees hotter * It's a simpler design * Bonavita carafes are excellent (glass or thermal), Moccamaster carafes are not (their thermal carafes are known to leak from the bottom because of a loose glass liner seal, and both their thermal and glass carafes are known to spill when pouring at a reasonable speed) * Bonavita uses a copper heating element just like Moccamaster, but is a significantly less expensive machine, and therefore much better value. Best of luck whatever you decide. Any SCA-certified machine will brew decent coffee, so enjoy. If you care most about good taste, start roasting your own beans, if you don't already. Also, I just want to mention that there are plenty of drip coffee makers whose manufacturers have never paid for SCA certification, but nevertheless brew excellent coffee. So while it's true to say SCA-certified brewers will make good coffee, it's certainly not true to say that non-SCA-certified brewers will not. One of my favorite coffee makers is a small 4-cup I picked up at a thrift store decades ago that has no manufacturer markings on it of any kind (so it was likely stolen from a hotel or something similar). It brews truly excellent coffee and cost me $4.99.

When I did my research a couple years ago it was between the technivorm and the bonavita 1900. So far the bonavita has been going strong since, my only grip that the thermal carafe doesn't keep it hot enough long enough. After 40 minutes, for my preference I have to nuke it, which is gross.

Absolutely. I 100% feel you. Since I already owned the Bonavita, it took me a long time before I could bring myself to replace a perfectly functional appliance considering that my spouse could use one of the plastic-free pour over drippers/FP/kettles we already have, if he wanted to be bothered with a non-auto.

It looks very similar to their Zutto, which I had and do not recommend. It was serviceable for a coffeepot to keep in the office, but only worth it because I picked it up for about $15. You can get better for what they’re asking new. Look for a refurbished or open box Bonavita.

You need both a good auto dripper and grinder. So is that 300 for both? If it is. You certainly could still make it work but it will be different than what you are suggesting. This will lead you into some variety of like the OXO grinder plus their auto dripper or like a Baratza Encore and Bonavita. However if you want to do pour overs they are a lot simpler than you are giving them credit for. You can get a Hario Switch which is just drop coffee/water in wait than drain. Will be easy and is really forgiving. You can also then open up the drain fully and use it as a V60. This will allow you to get a slightly better grinder like the Baratza ESP.

My uncle has the Bonavita and loves it. It does make good coffee. I have the MM KB with the drip lever and I pick the 1/2 pot option and fill it to 4 cups water. I get 1-1/2 cups out of it each morning. I also looked at MM Cup One but this is a better deal since I can make a full pot for company. I also got mine used for about $85.

I used to have a Bonavita (still have it actually) with a glass carafe and bought a Behmor Brazen Plus 2.0 about a year or so ago. The Bonavita is simple. Add water, hit the power button, and it starts. It uses cone filters, has no real settings, and doesn’t have auto on. The Behmor has a customizable altitude setting, pre infusion time, and brew temperature as well as auto on if you like to wake up to a pot of coffee. The only option is a thermal carafe and it’s a pretty good one. Coffee stays hot in it for a couple of hours. It uses a flat bottom basket which I think works better and more consistently for batch brew than a cone. The water reservoir is also stainless instead of plastic if that matters to you. I’ve been happy with the Behmor and would buy it again. Bonavita makes good stuff, but for the money I think Behmor is a better product with more features. I like having auto on for when I have company. I’d say the Behmor is slightly louder because it boils all of the water in the chamber first and then releases it. The Bonavita draws water from the chamber up the tube. But neither are what I’d consider loud. The Bonavita has more of a bubbling/gurgling sound and the Behmor has more of a rapid boiling/hissing sound. The Bonavita bubbles and gurgles the entire brew process whereas the Behmor silently releases the water after it comes to temperature. The Behmor takes slightly longer to make a pot (2-3 minutes longer). The Bonavita will function like the Technivorm Moccamaster and the Behmor will function like the Bunn Heat N Brew. Two different styles of water heating/delivery.

I have the Bonavita Metropolitan, which I believe is the same machine as the Connoisseur, but with a glass carafe. It does gurgle like a coffee machine, but isn't remarkably noisy. Glass pours fine, but I can't comment re: the carafe. Seems durable enough for what it is. I use it 4-5 times a week; I'd be surprised if it doesn't last 5 years, but I haven't gotten there yet. The glass breaks if you drop it in the sink of course. The "pre infusion" is a bit of a gimmick, but overall it is a decent coffee maker. Smelled like plastic for the first few uses, but that went away.

I would go for the Bonavita BV1901TS Connoisseur for longevity, ease of use and taste in the cup. The breville Precision Brewer have more gadgets, possibilities and a nice screen which may put the Bonavita in a ''boring'' state for you and wins for the convenience/features aspect. Both are SCA certified (temperature accuracy thing) and are good brewers, so can't go wrong with any of them.

Moccamasters are nice but they are very expensive. Bona Vita brewers are Technivorm knock offs for a fraction of the price. I haven't used mine for over two years and eventually went with a Kalita 185. I was using fresh coffee and was having issues with the bloom getting out of control when making a full pot (which we always did in the morning). It would require stopping the brew cycle when the bloom crested, and then taking a spoon and breaking up the crust otherwise the basket would overflow and you'd get coffee grounds in the pot. I suppose if the brew basket were larger, this would be an issue. At that point we thought that if we have to attend this thing just like a pour over, we might as well just do pour over. We went with a Chemex for a while and then switched over to the Kalita.

honestly i feel you, the coffee maker market is overwhelming now. my last one died too and i just wanted something basic. the Bonavita Metropolitan is right at $100 and does one thing well - makes hot water evenly over grounds. no timers or screens to deal with. the showerhead design is solid and the carafe keeps coffee hot without a burner. i'd avoid Ninja or Cuisinart if you want simple, they pack in too many extras. [Bonavita Metropolitan](https://featherab.com/shopit?search_keywords=Bonavita+Metropolitan+drip+coffee+maker) is what i switched to and cleaning takes maybe 30 seconds.

Don’t overthink it for a drip/pour over. I recommend a Bonavita coffee maker: it makes pour over coffee as a drip machine. Best coffee I’ve ever made at home from a drip machine. It’s consistent, one of the few that actually has a temperature control so the water temperature is consistent even if you life at high altitudes. They’re simple, and they work. For the grinder, I have a Capresso. Simple, gets the job done. The timer is not the most incredibly easy to get repeatable results down to fractions of a second, but that’s not needed in a drip machine. Whole set will cost less than $200, not focus on good beans and you’re good to go. Both my machines are over 10 years old and still going strong. I’ve literally had people say “I don’t usually like coffee, but I like the coffee you make.”

I have the BV1900TS if they have upgraded since then that's good. This version you cannot put the lid, carafe, and basket in the machine. The lid has to be stored separately. There is a button that releases the coffee which is the fail point. I bring up alternatives because A) drip coffee isn't BIFL, and B) I was exactly where OP was 6 years ago. C) once I went moka I never looked back. Forever looking for a better and longer lasting drip machine is an endless cycle that I was on for 25+ years.

??? I mentioned all three in my reply (moka pots, French press and percolator). See the paragraph that begins "As for the others..." Regarding your Bonavita - again, what model is it? You absolutely can put the lid and the basket away on a BV1800. There is no button on the lid of an 1800, you must have a different machine. And of course I know these just opinions (I mention that in the first sentence of my previous comment, and in the 3rd paragraph). You are definitely entitled to yours - I'm certainly not trying to talk you out of them. I just don't share them. Also, I understand that the moka pot is your BIFL pick, but the OP was looking for info on drip coffee brewers, not moka pots.
-
ZenMasterfulr/BuyItForLife · Best Drip Coffee Maker →2026-04-13T19:50:59
You are certainly entitled to your opinion, though I definitely don't agree. Pour over is great when I want a single cup and I'm the one doing the pour over (plenty of "baristas" do not do pour overs properly), but I'm usually brewing full pots and the best drip brewers are essentially just automated pour overs anyway. Plus I like not having to babysit my coffee and being free to do other things (like make bacon :) ). For quality, consistency, speed and automation, I much prefer a good drip brewer. As for the others, they all have issues I don't feel like dealing with. Percolators are great as long as you are right there to stop them, otherwise the overextraction tastes like crap (again, just my opinion). Moka pots often have the same issue, though I do love how durable and cheap they are (though the aluminum ones make everything taste metallic to me). French press I generally can't stand as they are a pain to clean, you again have to baby sit to avoid overextraction, they never seem hot enough once done, and I prefer a generally brighter cup with less sediment. Regarding the lid on your Bonavita - I'm having trouble picturing what you've described. What model did you have? As I mentioned, mine is around 15 yo, used every single day, and still brews like day one. I'd like to think your issue isn't systemic, and would be interested to know more. How did your lid fail twice? Regarding the lid having to be separate, I'm not sure what you mean - are you talking about the inability to put the lid on the carafe once the Mellita filter basket is on top of the carafe when storing it? Most people I know would just drop the lid inside the filter basket (on a BV1800, which is what I have) if they were going to store the brewer.
