  I have and love my Moccamaster. I use it for my daily filter brewing. If I’m feeling fancy with some quality beans I’ll use a V60. It might depend on how much tinkering you want to do or if you want an easy but still very good coffee experience

  I've had a moccamaster for years. I use it daily. Taste is good. Overall, it has been a great addition to our kitchen. The cons are the gap from the basket arm to the pot. There is very little room, so I often find myself scraping the lid or bottom of the pot.

  My moccamaster has been fantastic and flawless since 2008. It gets used every day, twice a day on weekends. Yes, I've had to replace the carafe three or four times and the plastic ones (My wife puts it in the dishwasher), but the unit itself has been bulletproof and makes excellent coffee. In fact, I can't think of another drip style coffee maker that makes coffee as well. Note: my mom got one in 2012. It is still used daily as well now that my sister has it.

  Just bite the bullet and buy a Mochamaster. Last coffee maker you’ll ever need to buy. Going on 10 years with mine now. Disassembles for easy cleaning and individual parts are replaceable, with no pump to fail either. Just a copper boiler.

  Breville Precision if he cares about the ability to tweak a bunch of variables, despite the brewer not being very remarkable to look at on your counter every single day. Moccamaster if he cares about design. If he’s into mid century design, things like Herman Miller furniture, vintage Braun products, record players, etc. Fellow Aiden if he’s into the latest tech They’ll all brew pretty good coffee, but in my opinion these three serve three different types of people. I care about my coffee and nerd out over my pour over coffee, but I own a Moccamaster because I simply cannot justify having an ugly coffee maker on my counter 24/7/365 when something as beautiful as the Moccamaster exists

  This is my fave too since they make great coffee and are completely rebuildable (and have been since the 70s). OP, if he’s a buy it for life guy, this is the play. If he’s more into fancy automated features like bloom and being able to set his brew profiles then something like the Aiden is the way to go.

  Couldn’t recommend Ninja any less. My OXO 8-cup replaced a Ninja Coffee Bar that was not up to snuff and finally quit working altogether around 5 or 6 years ago and it’s pretty good—certainly above average. I know if I looked at upgrading again in the future, I’d probably get a Moccamaster but that’s pretty well above your price range.

  I mean it’s a great coffee maker. If you don’t care much about coffee, there are a lot of other things you could spend that money on, that you do care about. I run on coffee. I have a moccamaster and I’m happy I bought it after frustrations with other machines over the years. But if coffee is not a big deal to you, I’d say the coffee maker I had that made the best brew was our percolator.   There are 4 plastic bits, 3 of which are just lids for the water reservoir, filter basket, and carafe. The other is the coffee basket. As long as you know that the square water reservoir lid won't fit on the round coffee basket it's not difficult to keep track of things. Maybe your bad experience came from using one that was in the trash...

  You might get him interested in Mocamaster. It doesn’t have a timer, in fact it doesn’t have anything other than the heat and drip function but it absolutely makes the best coffee ever. His engineer side might get turned on by how good the coffee is. We’ve had 2 in 30 years and the company didn’t really think it was necessary for us to replace the first one.

  If you want that customization, go for teh Aiden; but the bottom line is with chips and motors and pumps, there's no way it BIFL. When it breaks, will parts be available? Can most people with a basic tool set repair it? If it scratches your itch, go for it, but I'll take the simplicity and maintainability of the MM

  Not familiar with the grinder but don’t be afraid to grind finer than the instructions say. I’m grinding finer on my Ode 2 than recommended. So long as the brewer is not overflowing the paper filter it’s not too fine.

  Honestly the biggest factor is what is your financial situation like? If dropping $300 is going to cause stress in other aspects of your life, then a Moccamaster is probably not worth getting. If you are in a comfortable spot financially, you’ll be happy dropping the money even just to see the machine in your kitchen every morning because it is a gorgeous statement piece and conversation starter when you have company. For me, with my old coffee maker, I was fairly happy with my coffee but I found myself going to my local coffee shop 3-4 times a week because i wanted to treat myself, but now my coffee at home is better than what I can get from a coffee shop. So for me it has saved me money after only like 2 month worth of not buying coffee from the coffee shop.

  This is one question that doesn't seem to go away... Reddit has a serious hard on for the Technivorm Moccamaster, but I'm going to give you another recommendation - Bonavita. I own both, and both are SCA-certified and brew excellent coffee. However, the Bonavita wins for me for the following reasons: * It's physically smaller and shorter, and can fit in more people's kitchen well. * It's easier to clean * It extracts better and brews coffee a couple degrees hotter * It's a simpler design * Bonavita carafes are excellent (glass or thermal), Moccamaster carafes are not (their thermal carafes are known to leak from the bottom because of a loose glass liner seal, and both their thermal and glass carafes are known to spill when pouring at a reasonable speed) * Bonavita uses a copper heating element just like Moccamaster, but is a significantly less expensive machine, and therefore much better value. Best of luck whatever you decide. Any SCA-certified machine will brew decent coffee, so enjoy. If you care most about good taste, start roasting your own beans, if you don't already. Also, I just want to mention that there are plenty of drip coffee makers whose manufacturers have never paid for SCA certification, but nevertheless brew excellent coffee. So while it's true to say SCA-certified brewers will make good coffee, it's certainly not true to say that non-SCA-certified brewers will not. One of my favorite coffee makers is a small 4-cup I picked up at a thrift store decades ago that has no manufacturer markings on it of any kind (so it was likely stolen from a hotel or something similar). It brews truly excellent coffee and cost me $4.99.

  This. It’s a drip coffee machine - the concept is the same and the coffee remains virtually unnoticeably different from our cheapo machine. The beans/freshness/quality of the grind mean more than the machine. My issue, and reason for changing was that I never have luck with the cheap machines and would replace them at least once every 2-3 years for $50-$100 each. The Moccamaster is built like a tank and so far I’m on year 3 without issue. So if you’re cycling through cheap machines quickly. Then it’s worth the upgrade. Otherwise, not worth it.

  The difference between a $20 Mr. Coffee and a $300 Moccamaster is night and day. You’ll get better water temps, flow rates, coverage, and overall build quality with the Moccamaster. It makes a significant difference in the end product if you actually care about what you’re drinking.

  When I did my research a couple years ago it was between the technivorm and the bonavita 1900. So far the bonavita has been going strong since, my only grip that the thermal carafe doesn't keep it hot enough long enough. After 40 minutes, for my preference I have to nuke it, which is gross.

  I came from decades of strong tasty pourover coffee and Moccamaster KBGV was my first drip machine in 25 years --needed something automatic for 5am wake up --put a smart switch on my MM. I stick to the following and get very strong delicious coffee 30Grams coffee to .5 L water--double it for more coffee etc. I started grinding finer and finer and found the "wow" spot--no bloom, no stirring coffee in the MM basket--just the coffee ground to taste--took three days to dial in and water in the machine. I brew the same local roaster coffee in my machine that I do later in the day for pourover. What I observe when I glance into my brew basket (where the filter is)--is with the right grind size, water sits above the coffee a tad (much like pourover but not quite). Is it as good as my pourovers-no of course not. Is it better than other drip machines--YES. I've tried it against many other machines when I visit friends etc. Every machine is different. I would have returned my MM if it was a bad machine. It's not --it's wonderful.

  This guy is right. Really getting a moccamaster is more about longevity than improving coffee taste. Also I didn't see anything in there about what kind of coffee OP is using. OP if you are using pre ground coffee I would highly recommend buying a decent burr grinder and buying quality whole bean coffee. That will make a huge difference in your coffee taste. The machines may have some marginal effects on coffee taste but nothing like upgrading to quality fresh ground coffee does.

  I’ve had some form of grind and brew for almost 30 years. Moccamaster, from the standpoint of having no automation, was an adjustment but I am very glad I made it as the coffe is hot and flavorful like it’s supposed to be. I would suggest you buy a grinder and start with grinding your own beans. You will be amazed at how much you coffee is elevated even using a basic coffeemaker. I suggest the Baratza encore grinder to start. It is a workhorse that’s been getting very high ratings for years and is around $150. It is a burr grinder which is a must and will last for years. I now have a Moccamaster k5 grinder which I also love and kept the Encore as backup. If you decide to buy a MM brewer, get the one that can be set to brew a half pot. Is it worth it? It is to me. I was replacing $300 coffeemakers that made not hot enough coffee every 3-4 years. Come June I’ve had my Moccamaster for 5 years. I expect it to last many more years.

  Yes, make absolutely better coffee. The copper element is heating at stable temperature. The mostly aluminium machines have too low weak coffee in the beginning of the pot and overheated bitter coffee in the last end of the pot. So mixed a third weak coffee with a third good coffee with a third burned coffee in 1 pot. Moccamaster has just a good pot of good coffee. Other machines die in 5 years doing nothing anymore or leak. I choose the metal isolation pot for extra durability and electricity savings. Moccamaster for bifl is easy repaired with a screwdriver and available spare parts everywhere. My last drip machine died in 4 years. Now Moccamaster is 10 years old. Now I use cheap brands coffee and still taste better than anywhere else. My taste developed during this time and i can absolutely taste different machines make different coffee. Moccamaster still the best.

  It’s pricey but it actually does make the best coffee. It holds the water a bit longer and at a higher temperature so more subtle flavors are extracted. Personally I get that people LOVE French presses but those tend to make the coffee too dark for me.

  My coffee maker just shit the bed after 6 months, after the last one (same model) lasted 5 years.) This time we bit the bullet and got a Moccamaster. It's built to be a mechanical pour over. They have a reputation for lasting decades. They're built simply but well, no clock or software, just two buttons. So you can't schedule, but it brews in like 5 minutes.
