JVC DLA-NZ500

JVC DLA-NZ500, packshot

    r/hometheater · OLED vs Projector

I'd go with the projector and throw a 120"+ image, assuming you can keep the room dark. Picture quality from the JVC is more than fine. Is it worse than OLED? Yes. Would you care or notice without a side by side comparison? I probably won't.

The new triple laser projectors (Valerion Pro2, Hisense C2 Ultra, JMGO N3) have gotten really close to the Epson and JVC level. The gap isn't huge anymore. **Valerion Pro2** – best value. \~$2,700, RTINGS #1, amazing contrast for dark rooms. **Epson LS12000** – $4,500+, 3LCD (no rainbow), motorized lens. Reliable but not better contrast than the Valerion. **JVC NZ500** – $6k+, best blacks, but you're paying a lot for that last bit of performance. **JMGO N3** – wait for real reviews before buying. For 10-12ft seating and 120-150 inches, most long-throws work fine. The zoom range is nice but not essential. If you want best value, Valerion. If you want no rainbow effect ever – Epson. If money doesn't matter – JVC. [I have the top projector options here](https://medium.com/@dejan-k/projector-vs-100-inch-tv-2026-d0b6e18c3c14) – might help narrow it down.

r/hometheater · Best Home Projector for a New Home theater in 2026

People are only talking about the positives, but none of the issues here. No projector is perfect. It's all about finding what projector has the qualities, as a tool, to deliver the experience that you are after in your space and determining what compromises you are willing to deal with to get what you need. Before people ask, as I know they would/will, I have seen all of these projectors in multiple rooms and have tested them alone and in direct side by side comparisons. While I am very happy that companies like Valerian and XGIMI are pushing to improve the space, the projectors they offer are not perfect. They have really pushed for viral marketing and have been largely successful with it. Because of that, people have a false sense for how good these projectors are. Side note, just so people are aware, Valerian and XGIMI pay people for posts on social media and forums. They get X money off the projector or a credit as a result. This creates the viral marketing and a false sense of quality. Again, the projectors are good for the money, but they are not immune to issues like many would have you believe just like any other projector on the market. To gain something you always must give something else up. The Valerian, Pro2 and Max, contrary to how people portray it online, has some significant issues. I would not recommend the Valerian Pro2 at all. The Max is a decent projector as long as its had for UNDER MSRP, but the Pro2 is not worth it unless you are restricted to that price point. The Pro2 and Max both have issues with RBE. Yes the RBE reduction modes works to a point, but if you are RBE sensitive the rainbow effects are still there. The projector also emits a high pitch whine from the left side when that reduction mode is on. Valerian is still a single chip DLP projector and as such will have low native contrast. Laser dimming is great, but as with most projectors, there will be a color shift as the laser dims. The Titan Max has the same issues with native contrast, dimming, and RBE. It also has problems with the image being poor and users having to chase settings to get it set for optimal playback. These settings need to change per scene in order to chase what the projector can deliver. XGIMI may fix this in future updates, but as it stands right now there are significant issues when directly compared to more mature products. Im hopeful this improves in the future, but for now I would steer clear. While I am hopeful the Noir is better, I can't speak to it until a see it. For both of these projectors, and really most projectors on the market, people need to understand that you are not getting the full native contrast at full brightness. You must lower the brightness, and ideally close apertures, to gain contrast and equal or at the very least encroach on the spec'd number. The LS12000 is a more mature product, and because of that is more consistent in movie to movie and scene to scene imaging. In my eyes it's a trade or a win in every category against the Valerian and XGIMI, largely due to this maturity and no RBE, with the exception brightness when compared to the XGIMI specifically as its 2700 to 6000. However, what you give up is money as it's a more expensive platform - 6000 MSRP (though it can be had for less) vs the 2500-4000 sale prices of the others. The NZ500 is hands down the best of the bunch, but it's also the most expensive. It has the best of everything with 2 caveats - brightness and motion. Motion is a loss due to the NZ500 having no motion handling options. The JVC has the best native contrast by several magnitudes and it shows in dark scenes. JVC also has the best and most mature dynamic tone mapping making it the most consistent and best performing scene to scene. It's true it does not support Dolby Vision like the Valerian and XGIMI, but as a pro in the industry I have also felt that Dolby Vision is largely unnecessary, especially when a quality dynamic engine is used like what JVC offers. Saying all of that though, and going back to my first statement, which one is best depends on the use case. Things like throw distance, green size, brightness expectation, ambient light, budget and much more will dictate which projector is best for the job. A projector, like all other equipment in home theater, is a tool to reach an end. If used and chosen correctly you a maximize your experience. However, if chosen solely based on what someone else tells you is the best you can find yourself left wanting.

r/hometheater · LS11000 contrast at least as good as HC3500?

LS12000 is what would suggest. The LS11000 is just worse at everything. Yes it’s cheaper, but what you gain from the LS12000 is well worth it. The 12000 significantly better native contrast (over double), better ANSI contrast, is brighter, plus it comes with a chief mount. If we compare the LS12000 to the NZ500 that I’m sure others will suggest, yes, NZ500 has better native contrast and tone mapping, but the LS12000 has better ANSI contrast, much better motion, is 4K120 capable, is brighter, it’s cheaper, plus it comes with a chief mount. The reason native does not matter as much as people think it does is because most content is not fully black. If you put a white square in the middle of an image with the LS12000 against the NZ500, the NZ500 blacks will be worse. It will be close, but the black will be worse. The only time it will matter is if the screen is significantly dark like credits, or the very dark scenes like Game of Thrones. With how rare those scenes are, I’d rather have the all around benefit of ANSI over native any day.

r/hometheater · LS11000 contrast at least as good as HC3500?

Resolution should be one of the last things to worry about on projectors unless you have very large screens. Our eyes can’t resolve pixels that small, thus e shifting goes unnoticed. Yes, NZ500 has better native contrast and tone mapping, but the LS12000, ethic is what would suggest, has better ANSI contrast, much better motion, is 4K120 capable, is brighter, it’s cheaper, plus it comes with a chief mount.

    > What I care about most is image quality first, especially contrast, black levels, and overall picture depth. NZ500. Yes it’s pricey. But image is razor sharp. Blacks are so good that in a dark scene I don’t make the difference with the parts of my screen beyond where the projected image ends. Buy once l, cry once.

I was in a similar situation. Fully light controlled basement room, projecting on 130”. Eliminated Epson because didn’t need the extra lumens and didn’t want FauxK. Eliminated Sony due to shortcuts in build quality, in particular manual controls. Had thus shortlisted the JVCs NP5 and NZ500. Though specs on NP5 were a bit better, I went for the NZ500. Main reason was the light source (more color stability over time, zero wait from power on to projection, much more silent, better resell value in 5-10 years). The fact that I got a BF deal for 4400 vs 4000 for the NP5 sealed the deal.

r/projectors · Epson QB1000 Review: The replacement for the Epson LS12000

So we have this unit in our showroom and I just can’t get over how unsharp the image from this unit looks. Not even in comparison to a JVC NZ500, but even to a BenQ W2720i and Epson LS11000. Epson is considering this to be working as intended but it’s just not looking good. Thought it was a faulty unit at first, but tried another one from a later manufacturing date and it had the same sharpness issue. I just can’t recommend it over the other models in that price range. In the EU, this model is around €5000 btw

    r/hometheater · JVC NZ500

I have both the JVC NZ500 (aprox. 106" screen) and an OLED tv (65"). For a living room or only one setup, I would probably go OLED unless you have complete light control in the room, and preferably black walls & ceilings. The blackness levels and contrast of the NZ500 goes away fast once you have some light in the room or white walls and ceilings. For a large size, the reflective light of the JVC is much easier on the eyes than any tv imo and depending on the OLED settings and source, an OLED can seem artificial due to the hash emitting light when compared to the NZ500's reflective light. No projector will beat an OLED on black levels or contrast alone, but the NZ500 comes close in a dark room and gives a better viewing experience on a big screen. Even at "just" my projector screen size of 106", I would still go for a JVC projector again over a big tv for a dedicated room, hands down.

r/projectors · JVC NZ500 black levels are insane.

It’s not really anecdote. It’s measured performance. The NZ500 has over twice the native contrast of the Sony 5100. Not saying that means it looks twice as good of course, but definitely enough to be noticeable.

    r/projectors · JVC upgrade from x7000 to NZ500

I don't think you will find the black level lacking on the NZ500 at all. In fact it does better with deep contrast in average and brighter scenes than any other JVCs before it, even some higher end ones. It's a fair bit brighter than your old JVC, and you can always close the manual iris on the NZ500 to increase the native contrast to get it close to what you had on the x7000, especially with a bulb with many hours on it. The x7000 with a new lamp is like 1200 lumens in low lamp and 1600 lumens in high lamp, and that's when the lamp is new. After 1000 hours in high lamp mode, the lamp would be dimmed to about 1200 lumens in high lamp mode. Meanwhile the NZ500 is about 2000 lumens and that level wont fade noticeably for thousands of hours. The NZ500 has good native motion IMO, but it doesn't have any sort of motion interpolation if you are used to using that for sports or something.

Visible at 14ft doesn’t seem right at all. I have the nz500 and have had other JVC before but the dithering noise was never visible from make than like 2 meters.

    r/projectors · Jvc projector nz500

Is this your first LCoS projector? It’s normal for the pixels to be all flickery and dancy at the close up level. It’s dithering. It should not be visible at all from your viewing distance.

    r/projectors · Epson QB1000 or JVC NZ500 for 180’’ screen

The NZ500 is indeed excellent, but it won't be bright enough for this size. At this point you should consider the new XGIMI Titan Noir Max. It's better than the QB1000 and way cheaper. Here's a nice little review: https://pixelht.com/xgimi-titan-noir-max-early-impressions/ It's also over 4000 lumens calibrated even which will be a big factor for a screen that big.

    r/projectors · JVC NZ500 or (Valerion Max + LG HU710PW)

    > Of course the ANSI contrast is much much bigger on Plus 2 compare not only to JVC but every LCD projector." Lol, but OP is using it in a room with light gray walls. He might get 100:1 ANSI in a room like that. The NZ700 which is similar to the NZ500 was measured twice now at ~450 and ~500:1 ANSI, so way more already than the room would ever support. Even a prefect black velvet pit of a room gets at most 600:1 ANSI or so.

r/projectors · JVC NZ500 or Sony BRAVIA 7? (2000 off on Best Buy)

It’s pretty close though. The difference between the NZ500 and NZ900 is basically just light output for a larger screen and some features that don’t necessarily even mater for regular movie watching like 120Hz, frame interpolation, 8K pixel shift, and 3D. In terms of sheer image quality for a regular 24fps movie on a screen say 140” or less the image between an NZ500 and NZ900 will be almost indistinguishable.

r/projectors · First time buyer; jump from $5k budget to $12k range?

I am in just about the exact same boat. I have recently done a LOT of research and I think an important point to take away is that ignorance is bliss. Depending upon your budget, you will love the projector you get for that general price range. That said, I want the best at a reasonable value and with tech that is recent/newer that is going to last. That said, it appears the general consensus is that while Epson is good, JVC is generally the best as it pertains to picture quality. It’s HDR tone mapping and frame sharpness and smoothness tends to be in the lead. Further, the newer NZ500 and 700 series (which is being released this month) is class leading in almost all categories. I originally ordered an Epson LS12000 and will be returning it for an NZ700z. But keep in mind the LS12000 is a $4-5k projector while the nz700 is a 9k projector (USD). But based off initial specs and reviews the nz500 would also be a better buy than the LS12000. NZ500 being at rough $5-6k range. I can go into SO much more detail as to all the reasons why JVC over everything else but also google searches will do the same.

It’s a very large upgrade for you in terms of picture quality; sharpness, contrast, black levels, etc. You’d be stepping up into the home cinema territory and with dark room viewing with dark walls/ceiling you’ll get the benefit of the nz500s strength. r/projectors · Projector recommendations between JVC NZ500 and Bravia 7 projector for 150" AT screen 16:9

At a 150” AT screen, brightness is your friend. Both of these options have between 1800-2000 “calibrated” lumens which will jet you 26-30 ftl. That’s good for a dark room with SDR but just under what is minimum for HDR. You may want to consider a brighter projector to support that image size. I personally am running two different projectors, a JVC NZ800 and an Epson QL3000 getting me like 50-100 ftl respectively. The JVC is more than bright enough for my theater room, yet depending on the content, I still do use the Epson (as well as for 4k120 gaming). Yes the black levels are not as deep, but the HDR performance is 🤯 I do have both the NZ500 and Bravia 7 in our showroom and would be happy to get into more depth with you about those or other options.

r/hometheater · Best Home Projector for a New Home theater in 2026

I went down the rabbit hole of projectors for months. I ended up finding r/projectors advice helped the most and they pointed me to projectorscreen.com. They were IMMENSELY helpful and got me set up! I decided on the NZ500 because I had a longer throw need and didn't want to worry about replacing this thing for the next 10+ years. I really didn't want to spend that much, but after talking with them it was obvious it was the right option given all my requirements and concerns. The advice of "buy once cry once" is spot on :) Having said all this, it's not installed yet - still finishing the room - so I can't tell you how much I love it yet but it sure is pretty in the box!!

r/hometheater · This is so confusing to me. Youtube doesnt help at all.

I was in your same position and what ended up being the decision maker was my required minimum throw distance. I wanted the projector mounted on my ceiling at the back of the room and accommodate a 120" ATS. I found most of the "long throw" projectors couldn't meet the minimum throw distance. I ended up with a JVC NZ500 (from projectorscreen.com, call them and they may give Reddit discounts) WAY more than I had intended to spend but absolutely no regrets. I figure I won't need to replace it for at least 10 years and the picture is incredible in our light controlled room. So figure out the throw distance first, that was my biggest lesson.

    r/projectors · Sony XW5000ES vs JVC NZ500/RS1200

If deciding between the Sony and JVC, the JVC is better. I haven't watched tennis but basketball looked good. If you need more lumens then the epson ls12000 is the way to go. But in a light controlled theater room, JVC nz500 will blow everything else out the water in that price range. You will not be disappointed. Look up Mike Garrett from AV Science in NY. He is very informative and can help you plus a great deal on the nz500. I would suggest having it calibrated too.

    r/hometheater · LS12000 vs QB1000 VS NZ500

And the nz500 will handle the 142 inch screen, I would try to keep the throw distance at the minimum for more brightness. You don't need 5000 lumens. Dolby THX recommends 104 nits for HDR. I have 120 inch screen at minimum throw, calibrated I hit 112 at 74 laser. Plenty of room for larger screen.

r/hometheater · Which Projector? JVC DLA-NZ500 or Epson LS 120000?

The LS12000 shows $6100 on their website, the NZ500 can be bought for about 5500 OTD, but well see if that increases as well. I have the nz500 in a dedicated pitch black theater and the picture is stunning. Any ambient light definitely reflects on the screen and instantly ruins the picture. The 500 is going to be the best projector in that price range. Maybe you need to look into an ALR screen to help with any extra light.

r/projectors · Screen projector color for JVC nz500?

Just my experience, I have the NZ500 with the Seymour AV glacial white screen. Any type of light in the room affects the picture. I think a good ALR screen is needed for this. The 500 is great for dedicated home theater. It's not bright enough for a living room projector.

    r/projectors · Sony XW5000ES vs JVC NZ500/RS1200

No i got cold feet and am holding off for more reviews. I’ve been following the avsforum discussion and there are a lot of people on both sides of whether or not the NZ500 would constitute an upgrade. That said, those that are arguing against seem to be members who are retailers and would have a vested interest in encouraging people to upgrade to the nz700 instead. I did find that [this comment](https://www.avsforum.com/threads/jvc-dla-nz500-vs-nz700-first-look-review.3307949/page-67?post_id=63684125#post-63684125) makes a compelling case that is often overlooked when people simply compare the lumens of the two projectors: > The NZ500 has about double the intra-scene contrast as the NP5, better tone-mapping, and will be noticeably brighter especially compared to the bulb after even just a few hundred hours. The NZ500 will start around 1800 equivalent lumens due to the recycling, and stay around that for a few thousand hours. Meanwhile the NP5 starts at 1600 and dims quickly in high lamp down to about 1400 by only 500 hours and 1200 by 1000 hours based on my experience.

I agree with an Nz500 and a 140" 2.35:1 screen and it is just as the cusp of being able to handle HDR well, anything larger will start to drop quick. JVC is definitely the way to go, but I think you would need an NZ700 at least or an NZ800.

r/hometheater · Best Home Projector for a New Home theater in 2026

I love my epson 6050. Had a 6040 before it. Lamp isn’t an issue bc it lasts for so long. I have a tv for daytime watching, so don’t need a super bright laser projector. Native contrast and black level are better than any of the DLPs. But it lacks the gaming high refresh modes, Dolby vision, and filmmaker mode that a lot of newer projectors now support at a similar price point. If you don’t need 3D, then the LS12000 is a great option. If you can afford it, NZ500 is even better.

r/projectors · Help me choose between Sony, JVC & Epson please :)

The Sony is the only one that comes in a white case. Otherwise, JVC is the clear contrast winner and best all-in-one hdr dynamic tone mapper. If you want a hit on contrast for more brightness, Sony. If you want even more of a hit on contrast for a lot of brightness, go Epson.

r/projectors · Projector advice for new home theatre - Valerion VisionMater Max and other options

My advice: • If you’re looking for a 150-inch screen with 3D capabilities, consider the BenQ W4000i. It’s more reliable and offers excellent 3D quality. • If you prioritize the best possible image quality, opt for the JVC NZ500. However, be prepared to compromise on the screen size, as it only has a 135-inch display. The significant improvement in image quality from your Sony to a Native 4K JVC will be more impactful than the additional 15 inches of screen.

    r/hometheater · can anything beat the LS11000?

LS12000 here, but i am also using a Lumagen Radiance Pro to do all the tonemapping and for auto aspect switching since i have a 2.40 screen with masking. Prob the best I can get for maximum brightness with tone mapping that beats the native JVC tonemapping chip. I was considering upgrading to a JVC NZ500 but its not as bright, and the next step up would be double the price (NZ800) so i am going to wait until the next generation JVC and hope it hits equal brightness and I can get native 4k.

r/projectors · JVC NZ500 black levels are insane.

I saw the Sony xw5100 in a showroom with a a different gain screen so it’s not 1:1 but to my eye yes it was “brighter” at the expense of slightly worse but not by much color. Thats totally anecdotal though. And I also got a good deal on an open box but unused JVC so that could be biasing my eyeballs.

r/projectors · JVC NZ500 black levels are insane.

Huge difference to my eye. I find it brighter than the epson with much better HDR support. HDR on the 5050 feels like an afterthought. That said, the 5050 still has better color than 99% of the market so it’s not a MUST upgrade.

r/projectors · JVC NZ500 black levels are insane.

I keep my laser at 74 for HDR content and I’m pretty happy with it. They could be a touch quieter in very quiet scenes though. As you say, so in love with everything else that I don’t even care.

    r/projectors · Valerion pro 2 vs Epson QB1000

Valerian is DLP based so if you are sensitive to the rainbow effect avoid it. Check out the sub-forum on AVSForum for more details and owner comments. Better to look for an LS12000 than the QB1000 which is overpriced (I got a new LS12k for just under £3k in the UK) If black levels are most important to you then JVC which, even though the LS12k is good when set up correctly the JVC LCoS will beat.

    r/hometheater · Jvc dla-nz500 or epson ls12000

What I would ask is are black levels really important to you? Whilst the Epson is very good it’s not as good as JVC. By the Epson is better in other ways. (Check the above reviews) I’m UK so prices are different. For me a JVC would have been twice as much as that I paid for the Epson . But it looks like you have a good saving over an NZ500. If you could return it (Epson) why not give it a try and see. If it helps, I’m very happy with my Epson after a few tweaks. But I wish the black floor was lower - purely personal concern having owned JVC. Either projector will give you enormous pleasure!

r/hometheater · Which Projector? JVC DLA-NZ500 or Epson LS 120000?

If you're interested in closing all the shades and turning off the lights, get the JVC NZ500. Yes, I know it's never pitch dark in NYC, but this is close enough that I would say the JVC is worth it. BTW, buy your projector **ASAP**. Epson is **increasing their prices by 24%** very soon. The new pricing is already live on their website: https://epson.com/For-Home/Projectors/Pro-Cinema/Pro-Cinema-LS12000-4K-PRO-UHD-Laser-Projector/p/V11HA47020MB It is still $5K for now at Best Buy and other retailers, but that will be changing any day this week: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/epson-pro-cinema-ls12000-4k-pro-uhd-laser-projector-hdr-hdr10--2700-lumens-hdmi-2-1-motorized-lens-120-hz-ultrablack/6495340.p?skuId=6495340 JVC will probably follow suit soon. **The tariff pricing is coming for everything.** If you are on the fence about any purchase and you have the cash to spend, just buy it ***right now.*** You can always return it next week if you change your mind.

That 15% light output difference is not going to be enough to easily notice. You generally need a much more substantial lumen difference than that in order to translate to a human perceived difference. The NZ500 is the price-to-performance sweetspot in JVC's current line up. The JVC NZ700 also has the DCI Cinema Filter feature that produces slightly more accurate color when you enable it. The JVC NZ500 doesn't have that. But I don't know any JVC owners who actually use that filter option. You get very slightly more accurate color at the expense of a massive brightness hit.

r/projectors · Help me choose between Sony, JVC & Epson please :)

Ok- hear me out… I’ve got the LS12000 - predecessor to the QB1000. With the QB1000 supporting dynamic tone mapping, that’s a nice win for reducing the amount of “fiddling” to get hdr to look right. But… Over the past year, I’ve played the Dolby LLDV tone mapping trick with an HD Fury - and while it works, recognize no projector has nearly the light output for something like a TV HDR experience. I’ve used lots of input devices, played with always on LLDV, followed lots of guides on calibration and settings recommendations. Ultimately I went to SDR for my projector viewing. There are a few reasons. 1) the projector “bonk” between SDR and hdr was long on the Epson. Like almost 10 seconds. That’s painful between start and stop of every movie or stream. It got to where I could pick up on the barely audible click of a relay or something and be like “we’re just 5 seconds away from a picture now!” 2) I use the zidoo z9x for local playback. I’ve told the zidoo my projector doesn’t support hdr. The zidoo engages the Dolby VS10 processing engine and dynamically tone maps ALL content - I let it do everything from SDR to Dolby Vision. It looks extremely good. I think HDR had a VERY slight edge if I tweaked settings for each movie, but without spending time getting the dynamic range right every time, the SDR experience is probably 95% of the very best I could ever achieve with hdr. 3) I use Apple TV for streaming. I’m using it to do tone mapping for hdr content for now. I’m not sure if I will stick with this or revert to LLDV for streaming and just accept the bonk when needed. For now, I’m happy enough with SDR and the immediacy of the playback of eliminating HDR. 4) I use a 158” cinescope screen. I use the lens memory of the Epson for a CIH experience. It has worked extremely well for me. I’ve got 16:9 set for lens 1 and 2.39:1 for lens 2. I LOVE the immersion of cinescope. 5) I feel like my quest of seeing the very best I could get (shy of a madvr) was truly worthwhile for me, and I’m glad I spent the time investigating what was possible. I’m REALLY happy with the CONSISTENCY of the image quality now. My wife or kids can turn on a movie and get the same awesome experience whether I’m there or not. That was a huge win for me. If I were buying today, I’d want to see the JVC next to the Epson. JVC has legendary contrast, but the brightness of the Epson is hard to ignore. When watching sports, I like having some ambient lights on as people are getting up more often. That extra light output makes it a good experience for more viewing scenarios. If you are using for dedicated theater viewing in a dark room all the time? My prejudice of seeing JVC reviews vs owning the Epson would point me to the JVC. Just my $0.02. Does the JVC have lens memory? Good luck!!! Some of the most fun I have in this hobby is evaluating options, reading reviews, exploring little-known features, and THEN enjoying my well-researched purchase. I’m a little jealous of all your options! Have fun!!

    r/projectors · Valerion - Quality problems

I did mention the power supply issues. The fan issue could be QC related or possibly something with the software causing the fans to bug out. Device waking up at night is likely related to CEC, maybe a device is waking it up. I haven't had that happen and I've had the Pro2 for 2 months, probably a couple hundred hours on it by now. I haven't seen the light leakage issue, where was that? Was it a single case or multiple? The connections not aligned probably happened during shipping, it is possible that multiple got rattled so we could see more cases of that. Other than the power adapter failures and the Wifi being disconnected (I noticed some more recent teardowns where they added tape to prevent this from happening) I do not think these out of the ordinary. I had a 5040UB that I had to get the power supply replaced three times. I sold it after getting it replaced the third time and picked up a 6050UB which has been fine, but it does have that blue colored black floor that Epsons are known for. Sony with their panel degradation issues after a couple years. Even JVC has had some QC issues, such as bright corners. I've read recently of several NZ500's with stuck pixels. Nothing is perfect.

r/projectors · Projector recommendations between JVC NZ500 and Bravia 7 projector for 150" AT screen 16:9

JVC has a brighter curve to the tone mapping and does best when working with known metadata only available on Blu-Ray or Kscape. The problem is streaming devices like an AppleTV do not provide accurate metadata. This is where Sony outperforms the JVC and comes closer to the creative intent as they create their own dynamic metadata regardless of what is provided by the source. When it comes to which one is better that is somewhat of a personal preference and calibration. I have installed both and the Sony looks extremely accurate with very minor adjustments. The JVC really requires a full calibration to get to the most accurate picture. If you like a "poppier" picture and are going to invest in calibration you might like the JVC better. If creative intent is more important and you do not plan on hiring a calibrator Sony is an easy choice.

r/projectors · JVC NZ500 or Sony BRAVIA 7? (2000 off on Best Buy)

On the B7 HDR and tone mapping is a push. JVC has a bit better blacks, but the Sony is better at most everything else. Color, motion, up scaling, brightness, and gaming are all wins on the Sony. Both are significantly better than the XW5000.

    r/projectors · LS12000/XW5000ES/NZ500 coming from the HW40es

The Epson is not going to be as smooth or natural as the the JVC or Sony. It’s bright, but pushes green if you’re going bright and blacks take on a purple hue. JVC is going to have the best blacks and is a beast with high bit rate content like BD and Kscape. Sony is going to be very balanced with the best motion, color, and upscaling. If you’re going primarily disc based movies and are going to get a professional calibration go JVC. If you’re more streaming and want out of the box performance go Sony. Added plus is the 5000 has the same mounting pattern and throw as your HW40. If you’re using a control system the protocols are the same so it’s a super easy upgrade.

r/projectors · JVC NZ500 bright enough for 160" scope screen?

I went NZ700 with my 150 inch 1.3 gain matte white screen and run SDR at 74% laser and can get away with the same in HDR wide quantizer no filter, but I created a second HDR mode for filter and laser power mote like 90%. The projector lens is 18 feet from the screen in a darkened room. NZ500 on 160 inch is likely pushing it with HDR and close to its limits for SDR already. A gain screen would help of course.

    r/projectors · Projector choice

No, my son noticed it at times on my C2 Ultra. I saw a tiny bit of speckle at times. I am running NZ700 with reduced laser for a 150 inch 1.3 gain screen, so I have headroom to spare in SDR but am technically underpowered for HDR. I suspect the NZ500 at 100% may be in a similar range. The JVC is all about that black floor, which is incredible. My C2 Ultra certainly delivered far more luminance though!

r/projectors · Projector recommendations between JVC NZ500 and Bravia 7 projector for 150" AT screen 16:9

I chose the NZ700 (RS2200) for the extra lumens in my 16x20 darkened room with 150" 1.3 gain screen. It runs SDR and a basic HDR mode at 74/100 laser power (lower fan speed) and I have a second HDR mode I made with a 90/100 laser as well as the wide color gamut. 50 nits SDR after calibration, and about 80 nits HDR. Many will insist 100 nits is the goal for HDR, but it's not possible in my space after calibration (you can hit well above 100 in my space but it's not accurate or desirable). 80 nits absolutely rocks in my space, nothing feels limited. There is an HDR Quantizer mode setting for wide or normal, and the wide setting does raise the average picture level brightness to where my 74/100 HDR mode is perfectly fine. The quantizer normal mode with 0, coupled with the wide color gamut and 90/100 laser is my go to for the most accurate image at the cost of a bit more fan noise. I suspect if you go NZ500 you would run the wide quantizer setting to bring that presence up. I have not used the Sony, from what I understand the gaming lag is quite good where the NZ500 / NZ700 is not.

    r/projectors · Projector choice

This is likely the case between those 2 models. I definitely realize that at this point for me personally the JVC is about chasing the deepest blacks possible. There are other reasons that are somewhat subjective, like the texture of the picture is more cinematic and rich. Also the very fine shadow detail is greatly increased even before you tweak it a bit. I do zero gaming and only watch movies.

    r/projectors · Projector choice

If you want deep blacks due to insane native contrast then JVC should be the obvious choice. I am running an NZ700 on a 1.3 gain matte white 150" screen in a darkened room, 18 feet from lens to screen mounting distance. It has higher lumens than NZ500 but I am achieving SDR 15 fL standard with laser at 74/100 with aperture at -7. HDR wide open the highest it seems to hit in my setup is over 24 fL but I still prefer 74/100 and it pops very nicely without hitting recommended fL standards. I assume that Valerion at 3500 lumens can more easily nail it on the brightness. I moved from a Hisense C2 Ultra and loved that projector except it is really more appropriate for ambient lighting or people who don't care that blacks are charcoal grey. Moving to native 4k is a more cinematic, smooth image. No rainbow effect or laser speckle was another huge plus for me.

NZ500 first, Sony second, Epson LS12000 third. Then the BenQ models which will struggle with black levels. I'd likely get a Valerion over the JVC models at that price point. No question, I would always go for a JVC in a good theater.

    r/projectors · Epson Premium Projector Showdown: QB1000 vs LS12000 vs LS11000 vs 5050 vs 6050

Once you are in LS12000 territory for pricing, the LCoS units from JVC and Sony should be in the mix as well. Especially the NZ500 from JVC. The QB1000 is supposed to deliver a significant improvement on the LS12000, which is good to hear and the added brightness certainly can be useful in certain setups. The 6050 and 5050 are basically the same model, so any claimed differences are extremely minor and rarely useful in most setups. I believe the 6050 and 5050 are now doing 3-way pixel shifting instead of just 2-way. So, they are closer to 4K than before, but not quite there. I have no idea what PRO-UHD even means beyond the marketing. Epson is really dodgy about being specific on their pixel shifting. Other than the reality that most reviewers call it out for not being as sharp as DLP pixel shifting nor native 4K from JVC/Sony. Still, it looks good at normal viewing distances.

The JVC NP5 is on closeout for about $5,500 and would be one of the best looking images money can buy. Simple as that. I'd get that over anything else, unless I could swing up to the NZ500. But, there's a cost to make that transition.

r/projectors · Projector recommendations between JVC NZ500 and Bravia 7 projector for 150" AT screen 16:9

JVC is the way I would go, every day of the week. They are both bright enough for SDR viewing, and neither is appreciably brighter than the other. Relatively speaking, they are really going to be, at best, okay for HDR content. As with most projectors, they just lack the brightness to really punch on HDR content. Modern models which are getting a lot of traction, like the Valerion or XGimi models are brighter, but still aren't incredibly bright with HDR content. They just handle the larger screen sizes more easily. But, as you said, they lack the contrast of the LCoS models. This can be problematic for people who have issues with DLP as well. Your eye can't tell the difference between a 10% difference in light output, so visually, you would get very little in terms of brightness between the two models. JVC has a much greater overall focus on front projection compared to Sony. But, both companies make good products.

    r/projectors · LS12000/XW5000ES/NZ500 coming from the HW40es

Going from LCD to OLED is not a jump in brightness, but a jump in contrast. So, if you really are chasing contrast, then the JVC is the model which I would get, and recommend, hands down. It simply is the best contrast of pretty much any model near that price point. I do agree that they are spendy. I also agree that the Sony was one of the best 1080p values ever manufactured.

r/projectors · Screen projector color for JVC nz500?

You should get a TV in a room with some ambient light. Not sure what you are watching with the lights on, but white screens are still the gold standard for proper theater viewing of a projector. Dropping $5,000+ on a projector, then putting into a poor room, just doesn't make sense. That said, watching sports with some lights on doesn't change the proper screen, which would be white, almost always. Occasionally, a matte grey screen makes sense in a room with light walls/white ceiling setup. But, this projector really does ask for a better room for better overall performance.

    r/projectors · JVC NZ500 Laser D-ILA Native 4K Projector Review (Same as RS1200) @ ProjectorScreen.com

I wish JVC would price this at $5K instead of $6K. I know they make a superior product overall, but I can't imagine how many sales they are losing out on to Epson. I mean, someone being told the Epson LS12000 is a serious improvement over the LS11000 may be able to justify that added $1,000 in cost, but to have to jump 50% more to the JVC is a really tough sell. Even if it is worth it. Beyond that, I tend to have no complaints at all about JVC. Mine has been great for years and I have a number of clients who have had great results with their JVCs over the years as well. The black level performance is what is what is spectacular.

    r/projectors · JVC NZ500 HDMI eARC

There is no simple solution. HDMI ARC is only usable with a TV or projector which has ARC. The JVC was designed to be used with an AV receiver and stand alone industry standard speakers. Not wireless. Not ARC. This is going to be a significant problem with your setup and what you are hoping to accomplish. You need to run wired speakers. A wired left/right speaker. A wired subwoofer. You can look at WISA devices which allow wireless surround sound. Those are going to be better than the Apple stuff, but I'm not sure if there are any WISA AV receivers. You will need to have a HDMI cable (or two) in place be able to send video to the projector (the display).

    r/projectors · JVC NZ500 or (Valerion Max + LG HU710PW)

Projectors don’t generally require routine servicing. In the case of a laser projector, you might only need to replace an air filter occasionally. However, like any complex piece of technology there is the potential that some kind of issue might pop up like a board component failure or difficulty with one of the few moving parts like the lens servo’s or fans. With a medium to high end products from a major electronics manufacturer, there will be a service process and spare parts to deal with failures. Products from startup outfits are built on a disposable model - If a failure occurs during the warranty period, the unit just gets replaced. Once the warranty is over, you’re probably one failure from it becoming e-waste.

r/projectors · Choosing projector for dedicated theater space

I would go with the NZ7, especially if you found a deal on it. NZ7 is built on the same chassis as several prior iterations and is a mid-line unit. It has inputs to support 4k at 120hz and is more of a known quantity than the NZ500, which is definitely more of a budget unit.

    r/projectors · JVC NZ500 or (Valerion Max + LG HU710PW)

I suggest the JVC - I think you'l much prefer having lens memory that allows you to change setups without having to move or adjust the projector. Also, it will have better flexibility and serviceability over the long term.

r/projectors · Projector recommendations between JVC NZ500 and Bravia 7 projector for 150" AT screen 16:9

I would recommend the Sony. You will be in the same brightness class as the JVC since there is - at most - a 10% difference in rated brightness. IMHO Sony projectors have better optics and better image enhancement features. The best way to ensure that you get maximum brightness with either of these projectors is to position the projector as close as possible to the screen at the widest possible zoom. Narrower Zoom ranges at longer distances put less light on the screen.

r/projectors · JVC NZ500 bright enough for 160" scope screen?

The problem is without an anamorphic lens you lose brightness because you’re cropping off so much of the actual chip - 20% basically, assuming you at least use the full 17x9 width. If you only use 16x9, you’re up to 29% unused, which is a huge reduction in potential brightness vs using the lens. Your 160” scope screen is the equivalent of a 169” 16x9 screen, which is probably outside good HDR brightness. With that said I have a 147” 17x9 AT screen with a RS1200/NZ509 and feel it’s just fine. I’m also pretty happy with the 17x9 aspect ratio; it somehow feels wider than it is.

    r/hometheater · JVC DLA-NZ500 VS700

Remember with the NZ700 the improved contrast is only available when reducing light output, and the improved colors is only available when using the color filter, which reduces light output and can’t be used in conjunction with improved contrast, and without the color filter the NZ500 actually has better colors. I personally feel like the NZ700 is a weird product with forced compromises to all its benefits, especially considering how much more money it is. I’d suggest stepping up to the NZ800, or settling on the NZ500. I personally settled on the RS1200 (NZ500) with a 147” 1.90:1 AT screen, and am very pleased with the brightness and performance.

    r/projectors · Epson QB1000 or JVC NZ500 for 180’’ screen

The NZ500 probably isn’t going to be enough brightness for a satisfying image. I’m using one on / 147” 17x9 screen and it’s fine, but your setup would be 39% dimmer. You need more lumens for a screen that size - even to equate with what I have, you’d need 3200+ lumens.

Contrast = JVC. The NZ500 won’t have the brightness or gaming performance of the Epson, but it will absolutely give you the punchiest and most film-like image for the bucks. I say this a Canadian owner of the RS1200 who nearly bought a LS12000, and am very glad I went with the JVC. 147” acoustically transparent screen, no regrets.

    r/projectors · JVC upgrade

Massive difference in overall quality, black level, contrast, HDR performance, and probably color simply from the lower black floor. Plus full 4K instead of half 4K. Maximum brightness will be less (3000 vs 2000) but actual color-accurate calibrated brightness different is a lot lower, and may actually favor the JVC.

    r/projectors · Projector choice

The JVC is a great movie projector, I have mine with a 147” 17x9 screen, but I don’t game and it isn’t really intended for gaming. Can’t comment on the Valerion, but I didn’t want DLP and appreciated the true native 4K of the JVC.

    r/projectors · JVC NZ500 vs Sony xw5000 es

I recently purchased the nz500. I was initially going to buy the xw5000 and was very impressed when I went to demo one. Coming from a dlp pixel shifter I was expecting that. Having said that I am so glad I decided to wait on the nz500. The picture quality and tone mapping for hdr are on another level. I too had concerns with motion handling as I watch a good amount of sports but so far have been satisfied.

    r/projectors · New JVC NZ500

I’ve had the chance to watch some football and hockey. Watching the ravens/steelers game streaming on prime everything looked very good. Hockey on the other hand, i could definitely see it struggled with motion. It was still watchable and pretty close to my previous pj, just not as smooth as watching football.

    r/projectors · New JVC NZ500

Are you referring to the black bars? If so then mine aren’t completely black. Refer to the first pic of sonic and zoom and you will notice they are very dark but they are noticeable.

    r/projectors · New JVC NZ500

As of right now it is directly behind my head until I take down my other projector. I can definitely hear it when a movie goes silent or very quiet. I suspect once it is mounted I won’t notice it at all but everyone’s situation is different

r/hometheater · Best Home Projector for a New Home theater in 2026

Great post! I have the NZ500 and it is a fantastic projector. The motion handling is only an issue if you like frame interpolation. Personally, I’ve never used it as I like my movies to look like they do in the movie theater (24 fps). The projector automatically switches between 60 fps and 48 fps depending on the source. For film it shows each frame twice (2:2 pulldown) to convert from 24 to 48 fps. My screen is a 123” with a 1.1 gain and the projector is plenty bright.

r/projectors · Keep my BenQ HT3550 or buy XGIMI Horizon 20 Pro?

You need more lumens. The good news is just about anything will be brighter than the HT3550. That projector was excellent in its day but even in its day it was known for being dim. Real world you’d be lucky to get 1000 lumens from that projector. Btw, 1000 real world lumens is a lot. The issue is all these manufacturers embellish their lumen spec. Example: the BenQ W4100i I reviewed recently is fabulously bright. Bright is 1700-1800 lumens. BenQ rates the 4100i at 3200 lumens. That number is nonsense. Unfortunately since everyone is fibbing you can’t very well say your projector is 1800 lumens because then no one will buy it. They’ll buy the ‘4000’ lumens projector that only actually puts out 1300 lumens in a color accurate mode. Fun fact: this is why as soon as you get to the expensive projectors like the Sony 5000ES and JVC NZ500 the lumen rating suddenly decrease. It’s not that these are in any way dimmer— it’s just the higher end gear is more realistic about their specs. :)

The biggest thing, for me, is the description of how it handles black levels. r/projectors · 1.0 gain vs 1.3 gain?

Long post incoming, TLDR at the end. In my own personal experience - Commercial theaters look pretty 💩compared to nice home cinema projectors (including your NZ500, higher end Sony and Epson models, and certainly including the ultra luxury with Barco and Christie) The 108 nit standard for Dolby Theaters was implemented in 2016- early in the HDR days. Content has come a long way, especially considering how they have tried to push the envelope with HDR effects especially for Sci-Fi blockbusters, hyperrealism (think Mad Max), and even just realistic production styles (Top Gun Maverick, F1, etc) When I “auditioned” projectors at my local CEDIA dealer showroom, we looked at everything at every price point regardless of what my budget was, which meant seeing all sorts of brightness levels. Their showroom was a Stewart Filmscreen 180”, 16x9 with masking panels for scope formats, 1.0 gain, we looked at the following projectors: Sony GTZ380 (10,000 lumens) Barco Heimdall+ (6,000 lumens) They also showed on a 150” screen: JVC NZ900 and Sony Bravia 9 (3300-3400 lumens) JVC NZ800 and Sony Bravia 8 (2700 lumens) , and Epson QL3000 And then Epson QB1000 (3300 lumens), Sony Bravia 7 (2200 lumens) and JVC NZ500 (2000 lumens) Obviously, the higher end price point models were pure picture quality winners far and away - they certainly should be for $80k+ price points In the premium consumer world, while I appreciated the black level of the JVCs and the HDR tone mapping capability of the Sonys, I always found myself going back to “which of these have the most brightness” because it was more visually exciting to me. With SDR content they were all so closely comparable, but HDR it was a massive change in performance. In the end, the Epson QB1000 made the most sense for my space and my budget. I liked the brightness and how it made HDR look on my 135” 16x9 1.3 gain screen. Math wise it’s at about 270 nits on max laser, and I don’t mind running it at 85%. When I went down below 180-200 nits, I wanted to turn the HDR off bc it wasn’t exciting anymore. TL;DR: YMMV, I liked the way HDR looked over 200 nits, theater standards are old and they look underwhelming which is why DCI wants theater to evolve. Not trying to suggest you buy a new projector, but if you can find a dealer to help experience different HDR brightness levels I think it’ll greatly help you pick out the perfect screen (gain and size) for your space

Ahh, ok now we may be onto something. I have the NZ500 as well, but use run a 2.1HDMI. I’ll be honest, this is a bit outside of my wheelhouse but to the best of my understanding is that while the nz500 doesn’t support 120hz (2.1 required), the 2.0 cable is limited to about 18Gbps. While the NZ500 ports are limited to 32Gbps and the 2.1 cable can produce about 48Gbps. The 2.0 cable also doesn’t support Dynamic HDR. Again, while I’m a bit over my ski’s, I have the exact setup and do not have the same issues on a 130” ALR AT screen. It’s worth a try. Could be that simple.

r/projectors · Refurbished Epson LS12000 vs Used JVC DLA-NX7 vs New JVC NZ500

I'll probably keep the lights down 99% of the time. I'll primarily be using the projector to watch 4K Movies and TV Shows, but I'll also use it for watching sports and occasionally playing games on a PS5. I like that the Epson offers 4K / 120hz support for Gaming, but my primary use case is watching TV and Movies. I also like that I'm able to purchase a refurbished unit for about $2k less than the JVC NZ500. With the JVC I like that it offers Native 4K, although with the updates Epson has made to the pixel shift tech is there still a noticeable difference in resolution? I also like that the JVC offers Dynamic Tone Mapping and what I would imagine is a more impactful HDR presentation. I've been using LG OLEDs for the last few years so the HDR presentation and Contrast is important to me. Right now I'm leaning towards the Epson to save money, but I'm trying to decide if it's worth spending the extra money on the JVC. The used NX7 is an interesting option but I'm concerned about buying one out of warranty so I think it's mostly between the LS12000 and NZ500.

Of course the ANSI contrast is much much bigger on Plus 2 compare not only to JVC but every LCD projector." here is his full review: [https://www.projectorjunkies.com/valerion-visionmaster-plus-2-full-review/](https://www.projectorjunkies.com/valerion-visionmaster-plus-2-full-review/) So i'd risk it for the Valerion, but that is easy for me to say because I backed the Valerion Max.

I went from an Epson LS12000 to a Sony VPL-XW5000ES to a JVC NZ7. I can tell you that in my opinion (if you don't need a motorized lens) the Sony will be the best bang for your buck. It has fantastic black levels and it's native 4k. Depending on where you live it's really well priced, here it was 3400 euro on sale the other day (the Netherlands), that's about $3800. The JVC NZ7 is of course better but it's twice the price. Waiting on the JVC NZ500 is also a good option since I think that has HDR tone mapping? Definitely go for the JVC if you need the motorized lens.

Sorry for the late reply. If it were me, I'd definitely buy the LS12k over the 11k. But there's also the JVC NP5, which while being bulb based, is now sold at $4k. The JVC has much better contrast, and while it's a bit lower in lumens output, you could make up the difference with a higher gain screen. Also the JVC NZ500 has just been announced at $6k, which while over your budget, looks to be a really nice unit.

r/projectors · Projector recommendations between JVC NZ500 and Bravia 7 projector for 150" AT screen 16:9

Ok, thanks a lot for the answers. The NZ500 has 2000 lumens compared to 2300 for the NZ700, but it doesn’t have the wide‑gamut color filter, so it shouldn’t lose brightness because of that option. By enabling the quantizer I should get a small boost. And assuming the projector is ceiling‑mounted about 5ft behind me, the ventilation, even at 100%, should stay fairly discreet. In theory, unless I’m missing something, I should be able to reach the 80 nits you mentioned on a 150‑inch diagonal. Now I just need to figure out whether I can afford the NZ700 and its WCG. With the current trend of modern, greyish Netflix‑style movies, I’d say films like Blade Runner or the Spider‑Verse trilogy are more the exception. Unfortunately, it’s precisely for those exceptions that we want good equipment… On the other hand, there’s the Sony Bravia 7, which is sold at the same price as the NZ500 here in France, and seems to offer more lumens, a wider color gamut, and supposedly better motion handling, but with less deep blacks. Maybe that would be the more rational choice, especially with a light‑colored ceiling (since it’s a living room)… You haven’t told me whether your screen has a measured or advertised gain of 1.3. Thanks again.

r/hometheater · Best Home Projector for a New Home theater in 2026

For a dedicated 120–150” home theater at around 10–12 feet viewing distance, you’re already in the range where image quality differences really come down to contrast, black levels, and lens quality rather than just brightness or specs on paper. That’s why models like the Epson LS12000 and JVC NZ500 are still considered the safest “endgame” choices if your priority is true cinema-like depth and you want to install once and not think about upgrades again. The newer triple-laser projectors like the Hisense C2 Ultra, XGIMI Horizon 20 Max, Valerion Pro 2, or JMGO’s upcoming N3 Ultimate are definitely closing the gap and offer a lot more convenience with smart features and easier setup, but they still don’t quite match JVC-level contrast in a fully dark room. Something like the Dangbei DBOX02 Pro is a good example of this newer generation, very easy to place, strong brightness, and flexible enough for changing room plans, but more focused on convenience than absolute reference image quality. If I were you, I’d mainly decide based on whether you want “best possible cinematic image” (Epson/JVC) or “modern all-in-one ease of use” (triple laser options), and the biggest thing to lock in early to avoid headaches is your exact throw distance and screen size before choosing anything.

Keep in mind brightness is closely tied to contrast. Just because you can max out your projector to hit 200 nits doesn’t mean it’s the best idea. I’d say with most consumer grade projectors you’re better off aiming for something in that old Dolby spec range of 110 or so with the aperture closed down some to retain better contrast.

    r/projectors · LS12000/XW5000ES/NZ500 coming from the HW40es

I'm now leaning towards the Epson, but haven't ruled out the Sony.. JVC is likely out. I was watching a video on YouTube with Youthman and some other guy, and they were comparing (granted they were high end models) Sony vs JVC, and they made a comment that even if you have a small light (pot light or cabinet light or something), it really impacts the JVC, whereas the Sony or something with higher Lumens can fight through it. I do from time to time have my pot lights set to 10% - it's not much but I'm not always in pitch black. The Sony can handle it decently (not great, but definitely watchable if I'm watching hockey or football for example with some lights on). As I also said, movies are not a big part of my daily viewing. A lot of Youtube, Plex, Live tv, gaming, and movies - in that order. I may watch 1 movie every 2-3 months. It appears the Epson or Sony are far better if that's your usage patterns. If you are a huge movie buff and never turn your lights on, then inarguably it's JVC. I don't use my HT room as a pure-movie watching space, it's a general space that's light controlled where most of all our general viewing happens. Just 1000$ CAD more for the Sony 5000ES, and everything on there is manual (lens adjustment, etc). but it's still in the game for me simply because the HW40es has been so outstanding - it really is a gem of a projector.

    r/projectors · LS12000/XW5000ES/NZ500 coming from the HW40es

Yes you're absolutely right which is why this is so difficult. Almost all shops here sell their projectors as final sale - you can't even return it for an exchange or credit towards another product, so I am absolutely shitting my pants thinking about making the wrong decision and regretting it. I was spoiled by the HW40 - my biggest concern over the JVC is that perceived "punchiness" of the image, I've always heard JVC is more for heavy movie watching which if I were more into that, I would definitely go JVC, but since it's such a small part of my use case, I am quite conflicted.

    r/projectors · LS12000/XW5000ES/NZ500 coming from the HW40es

Appreciate both your responses. Was at the shop today, they have an LS12000 in stock unopened and willing to drop it by 500$, they would also sell me an Onkyo NR7100 for 500 off too. I wasn't leaning Epson, but at a 2000 difference between the LS12000 and the JVC, I am not sure it will be that noticeable, granted I believe the Sony/JVC are sharper overall, it may not be something I perceive when not looking at it side by side. They also have an NZ30B - I know it's a rebadged Benq I think, but they would give me that for 3500 (about 2500USD), don't know much about this projector compared to the HW40.

    r/projectors · Projector choice

Yea im not gonna be running hdr10+ on the max im gonna be doing dolby vision Also ik very beginner for projectors , this is literally my 1st ever projector so I think im leaning towards sacrificing some black depth for hdr pop especially since the nz500 would struggle hard on 150 inch so yea I think my decision is set If you have more insights for me please do tell me im learning alot talking with you

    r/projectors · Projector choice

Gaming is not the main use for the projector either its just a nice to have i intend to have an oled anyway for gaming mainly Dolby vision however is really important to me so it being present is really good From what I gathered the sharpness on the max actually beats the nz800 not just the 500/700 its sharper but the jvc is more organic

    r/projectors · Projector choice

Thats very true , only the iris is hardware otherwise it seems fully software dependant but I mean if it delivers 90% of the overall blacks of the jvc but gives more brightness in hdr , dolby vision , 4k/120 then goddamn sign me in immediately

    r/projectors · Projector choice

So its pretty much trading pop of the HDR for black levels Makes sense , I think the nz500 would struggle hard with hdr in my case and if setting both on hdr (dolby vision for the max , hdr10+ for the nz500) the gap closes quite significantly no?

    r/projectors · Projector choice

Yea that was my thoughts too Then someone I trust alot owns both and said the valerion is sharper overall and having 4k/120 and Dolby vision doesnt hurt tbh So im torn apart

    r/projectors · JVC NZ500 or (Valerion Max + LG HU710PW)

Yes, these projectors are in a very different market segment with the JVC having a real edge in contrast ratio and therefore black levels. It think it is generally understood that good black levels are critical for good picture quality and the JVC DILA technology produces contrast ratios and therefore better black levels that are 5 to 10 times better than any DLP projector that sells for less than $80K! ANSI contrast is really not meaningful, especially in a room with light colored walls. Intrascene contrast ratios are important, but not the 50:50 black white checkerboard pattern that is use for ANSI. Similar Intrascene contrast measurements with 1 to 5% average picture level are much more meaningful, but again in a room with light colored walls, the room will dominate that measurement. The JVC is clearly the better projector, especially in a dark colored room, but even in a room with light colored walls, the fade to black and very dark scenes will much be better on the JVC. The fact that 3D has been eliminated from the NZ500 is unfortunate, but I really do think that 3D is essentially dead. I have watched 3D on my previous SONY and JVC projectors, but have yet to try it on my JVC NZ800. Although 3D is kind of fun the first few times, I would rather watch a movie in 4K than 3D with glasses.

r/projectors · JVC NZ500 black levels are insane.

The first pic literally feels just like a cinema vibe, if you hadn't said anything, I'd never have guessed it's a home setup! Anyway, can't wait for your review.

From my experience, if your priority is pure movie black and that cinematic feel, I’d lean JVC NZ500......its contrast and black depth make films pop and it’s my go-to for dark-room theaters.

I’d put my money on the JVC NZ500 if movies are the main focus. The black levels and HDR handling feel closest to a true cinema, and that makes a huge difference in a dark theater room.

If you're open to UST, the [awol vision pro](https://onlinehairguide.com/dp-B0CR13MB4F0) might be worth a look. It's not in every roundup, but it’s been getting attention for legit reasons. Triple laser (no color wheel), dolby vision and atmos support, plus it doubles as a center channel speaker, which is kind of wild. The built-in audio’s actually usable, especially if you don’t have a full surround setup yet. Picture quality holds up really well even in brighter rooms (paired with their ALR screen), and it’s also 3D-capable if you’re into that. One underrated thing: power usage is super low compared to traditional projectors, which helps if you’re planning to run it often. That said, if you’re sticking with long-throw and care more about black levels or want that JVC tone mapping magic, the nz500 still has a strong edge in dedicated dark rooms. Just depends on your space and whether you’re leaning cinematic or convenience.

r/projectors · Need help choosing projector 3 to 5.5K budget

Yeah, I'm very interested in the better black. Although 1 thing to consider is I still need to buy a screen as well. And I have no idea what to get, but I guess anywhere between 400€ and 1200€ for a 120 or 150inch. In the shop selling the projector, the cheapest 120inch screen is 1050€ for a "Lumene movie palace platinum". I don't know what cheaper alternative is good that I can get in europe. It would mean that th Epson with mount and screen is cheaper than the jvc without anything

r/projectors · Help me choose between Sony, JVC & Epson please :)

Same here, tried the bulb based JVC NP5 then the Sony and immediately knew I'd be keeping the Sony. I could see the DTM advantages the JVC had but the Sony was just a level up overall (for me). Assuming the JVC made the same leaps with the new light source it would be my choice easily. Like you though, really enjoying the Sony so not getting upgradeitis.

r/hometheater · Help me choose between Sony, JVC & Epson projector please :)

I would say the Epson. I have the ls11000, about to upgrade to the QL3000. The QB1000 will give you the lumens you need for your living room. You say you'll mostly watch at night, but I promise, as I have mine in my living room as well with a shit ton of ambient light, you will use it a lot, and a lot more during the day than you'd expect. That Sony is going to struggle in ambient light conditions...the Jvc should as well, but I am not totally familiar with it's lumen specs.

I commend you for getting a nice ass projector, step 1 accomplished exceedingly well. Please take step 2 seriously, and that is the screen. They do make a difference. Stewart Screen Firehawk ALR is where I would start.

r/projectors · Screen projector color for JVC nz500?

Thanks! I watched a little bit of The Martian on a freestanding screen last night as my first experience with the projector (any projector for that matter) and I was blown away that I'm able to get the theater experience at home. The screen is 120" and I'm 12.7' away from the screen. I'm gonna go bigger at 135". For my first screen, I think I'm going to go the cheapest route I can just to get started and then upgrade after a year or 2. Ignorance is bliss so I wont know what I'm missing anyway. I'm considering the grey material screen from Silver Ticket here: [https://a.co/d/5IqVVIN](https://a.co/d/5IqVVIN) It has similar specs to the Stewart Screen Firehawk you shared. Any thoughts on that?

r/hometheater · Can the JVC NZ500 display 2:4:1 aspect ratio without an amorphic lens?

Your projector can play 2.4:1 it will just be letterboxed on your screen. If you zoom in to remove the letterboxing then you are essentially not using that pixel range and losing resolution. An anamorphic lens will utilize the entirety of the screen as you also need to have the image preprocessed to fill the useable area which the lens then readjusts to fill the screen.

Black levels are important, but I’m not sure if they are +$2000 important. I’m in the US. I can only find a NZ500 for $5500-$6000. I wouldn’t be able to return the LS12000 as I would be buying it from someone, not a store.

The JVC nz500 is the best on your list for contrast and tone mapping. What size screen are you running? Do you have easy access to the HT for a BIG tv? I ask because we switched to a 98" miniLED tv, and we are very impressed. But not everyone can wrangle a big tv into their HT. Good luck.

    r/projectors · New JVC NZ500

I want to see one, may have a chance soon. I also had an HK2288, I took a risk on a $1499 Valerion Pro 2 and have been very happy with it, it's certainly not JVC level of contrast but it's an overall upgrade from the HK2288. The NZ500 being literally 6x what I paid for the HK2288 makes it a bit of a hard pill to swallow especially with the motion of LCoS, maybe if it was in the $3-4k range.

    r/projectors · New JVC NZ500

Thanks for clarifying. Yes you are correct about how some projectors emit more light than others around the border. I have a JVC RS-1000 and JMGO N1Ultra and contrast is quite different between the two. That being said, the JVC doesn’t completely block light from being emitted outside the frame. In fact the actual resolution of the JVC is wider than my 16:9 frame and because my current setup is white walls I can faintly see that extra border on the left and right sides outside the frame. Of course it’s much better than the JMGO. I think the broader point I was making is that projectors are incapable of projecting the color black. I have pictures of my JVC projecting where sometimes it looks as dark as OP and others where you can fully see the white of the screen where the “black bars” are depending on brightness of the room or brightness of the projector. OP is also being selective with the pics as you can see the border much better in the second to last pic. That’s not to diminish anything. I love my JVC projector and OP’s is better than mine even. But there are so many factors affecting how dark the “bars” will look and even I’m contemplating a physical mask for mine when not watching 16:9 content.

    r/projectors · New JVC NZ500

To be clear the projector isn’t doing anything where the black bars are- The margin between the image and edge of the frame is just absent any light, and has more to do with the screen itself and how well OP has darkened the room.

    r/projectors · JVC NZ500 vs Sony xw5000 es

JVC has the upper hand in nearly all categories. The only drawback is that it can only engage motion enhancement on 24p. Some people don't consider this a problem as it can introduce the soap operas effect. I do like frame interpolation during sports. Which are generally transmitted in 60p. So imo the Sony is better for sports but JVC is better for movies.

Yes. I said. Now , projector snob, tell me what is wrong with that? All reviews comparing it to 10x more expensive JVC were blown away by how Valerion competed with it. Being even better in some aspects. But yeah… people here never acknowledge some noname company can do great stuff nowadays. “Muh JVC!!!”

Looks great. But I still don’t understand to obsession with black. Movies are not supposed to be super black black on most cases.

r/projectors · Worth waiting for the JVC NZ500 or should I buy the Sony XW5000ES while it’s on sale?

That was a great read. I will admit all of the calibration talk made me a bit nervous as I’m not an expert and would be staring blankly at all the settings the article discussed. I’d be moved to the NZ500 from a HW40ES which just died. Projecting to a Silver Ticket 135” screen in a completely light controlled basement. Trying to decide between this, a LS12000, or perhaps even a X90l 98” tv. Is pricing going to be pretty firmly around $6k for most of 2025?

r/projectors · First time buyer; jump from $5k budget to $12k range?

Well with black friday deals it looks like I have the following options: Nz500 for $8k Older nz7 on sale for $9.5k Nz700 for $12k I think the $4k difference between the NEW models is too big of a stretch and I would choose the nz500. But stretching to the older nz7 model for $9.5k might be reasonable... I just haven't yet found a good side by side comparison between the new nz500 and old nz7. Will watch a bunch of review videos this week and see if anyone has a "upgrade decision analysis" for existing nz7 owners.

Excuse me kind sir. It has 1.67 digital zoom and theres never any degradation of image, it stays in 4k no matter what you do with the zoom. So you would be fine. Besides, the technology in that thing was developed by JVC...20 years ago. It looks like they just shrunk the old model down and are charging $6000 for it. Its as low tech as you can get. The bnlacks are supposed to crush it but I think its way too much. That new Hisense is one bad mofo.

    r/projectors · Epson QB1000 or JVC NZ500 for 180’’ screen

It depends what you want, if you’re in search of better black level, or you’re in search of more brightness (you said your tw9400 is “not enough for the screen size”, not enough what?) . The brightness of the qb1000 is obviously what you will need if you aren’t getting enough brightness. Any hit to black levels is probably something you could get over. Now, If the theater is truly velvet black with a positive gain screen then the JVC may be bright enough with a maximum loud fan noise level and you can build a hushbox for it. But it’s a lot of ifs.  I would recommend the XGIMI Titan noir as another option. It looks like it will have better than qb1000 black levels, better brightness (dynamic), and the 98% bt.2020 color gamut that both the Epson and the JVC lack. All of that for being cheaper at the kickstarter price than either of the other options.
