    r/PasswordManagers · Bitwarden BAD NEWS

This is the consequence of private equity. The price increases, the elimination of cultural values, the eventual demise of the free tier, and I imagine it will stop being open source at some point. I switched away from BW a few months ago when they doubled their price of premium and now I'm very glad that I did because any principled reasons that I had for supporting them are now gone.

    r/PasswordManagers · Bitwarden BAD NEWS

I ended up switching to 1Password because I could get it for free and it's way more reliable when it comes to autofill than BW was. That alone was worth the cost.  I was paying for BW because I wanted to support it but now that they have PE funding, they don't need my money and I'd rather have something that's more reliable.

r/PasswordManagers · I almost never see NordPass recommended in here. Am I missing out?

For me, it's more of a trust thing. Nord is a fine VPN. But I kind of want a password manager from a company who specializes in that type of thing. So I have difficulty trusting them even though I have access to their password manager.  Currently, I use Bitwarden but after the price increase combined with the ability to get 1Password for free through my employer, I will be moving there.

    r/PasswordManagers · Why not keePass?

People just don’t want to bother with the additional steps required to sync a KeePass database. Most prefer Bitwarden or other cloud-based options because they’re easier to use. But in terms of security, then yes KeePass is very good because its offline.

r/PasswordManagers · What do you think the future of Bitwarden will be?

They have a good architecture, so there is a lot of promise for future feature development. They are currently hampered by a minimum of outside investment, which in turn limits the speed at which those new features can be released. The open source code means that a solid long term user base is guaranteed. It will continue to be supported longer than you or I will need it, just like VeraCrypt or KeePass. The real question is going to be how Bitwarden presents to business users. The real money in this space is corporate deployments; none of the password manager vendors make any money off of onesy purchases like you and me. This is also why Bitwarden will always have a free tier. They are not risking any significant income by always having a free offering to entice and familiarize future corporate decision makers.

    r/PasswordManagers · Bitwarden

I use Bitwarden. Yes, you can trust it. Your data is always encrypted at rest and in transit. Bitwarden is a “zero knowledge architecture. Your encryption key never leaves your device. (Note there is no super duper sneaky secret back door to decrypt your vault. if you forget your master password (or 2FA) you will lose the contents of your vault.) Bitwarden does not know your master password.

r/PasswordManagers · Recommendations switching from Lastpass

Start by doing a full export from LP. Do it now! A few other password managers to consider are Bitwarden, KeePass, and Enpass. Bitwarden has a good free tier, and KeePass is completely free. All three are “public source”, which reduces the risk of a bad actor slipping in unwanted behavior. Some people hate the UI in Bitwarden. KeePass requires a bit more work to set up, especially if you want a cloud mirror for your datastore — Indi recommend that.

    r/PasswordManagers · Anyone use keepass?

KeePass is one of the two password managers I regularly recommend. If you are familiar with it, this could be a good choice for you. For people who haven’t dived through the subtleties of installing and tweaking its configuration (using the syncthing plugin, for instance), Bitwarden might be a better option.

r/PasswordManagers · PM Sugestion 1PAssword or Dashlane or Nordpass or any other?

If I were to make an ordered list, I would probably suggest: * Bitwarden — free to try, with no significant limitations. Only $10/year to upgrade * 1Password — well regarded UI, good customer service, $36/year after a two week trial * Proton Pass — new kid on the block, has its fans and detractors, has a free tier * KeePass — NOT a cloud based app, requires a lot of tinkering and setup, but absolutely free.

    r/PasswordManagers · Keepass and Bitwarden

I see *a lot* of discussion over 1Password and Proton Pass, here and in other subs. But it seems that more redditors prefer open source software over closed source, so Bitwarden and KeePass/KeePassXC get recommended more than others. However, Proton Pass is also open source software, licensed under the GPLv3. It's just newer on the market, so hasn't seen the adoption the others have.

    r/PasswordManagers · Keepass and Bitwarden

The vault is encrypted client side. So long as my master password is secure, there aren't any backdoors, and I have regular backups, I don't care that my vault is hosted on someone else's computer.

r/PasswordManagers · Gemini says: Proton Pass > KeePassDx (in terms of privacy and security)

If you use KeePass 100% offline, local only, no sync, then whatever. But if you're going to syncronize your KeePass DB across multiple devices, then you are almost certainly going to use some cloud-based system (Dropbox, Google Drive, Syncthing, etc.). I'd put my money on a vulnerability being found by manually setting up a network sync for your KeePass DB than one in Bitwarden.

r/PasswordManagers · Just got another breach email from LastPass, what is actually the most secure password manager right now?

Why would you choose to continue using LastPass when it's notoriously horrible in terms of security and data protection, and is specifically not recommended for consumer use? It's time to switch to something that has a solid reputation, and is recommended. Bitwarden, 1Password, Proton Pass, Robo Form, and KeePass. Those are the PMs you should be choosing from.

r/PasswordManagers · Proton Pass vs Bitwarden

I've had the opportunity to use both Proton and Bitwarden. On the surface, both are intuitive, functional password managers that can securely store your logins and other sensitive data. Both are good options, and either would be a suitable pick. Having said that, I would choose Bitwarden over Proton Pass (and I do!) and here's why. Proton is a solid company that develops several popular applications starting with their flagship Mail application, and including other related services such as Calendar, and VPN. However, unlike Bitwarden, password protection is not their sole focus. Pass is a relatively new offering that they created to be a compliment to their growing suite of privacy-focused products. Bitwarden, on the other hand, has been exclusively protecting passwords since 2016. Protecting their customers' passwords is all they do, and they do it well. Given the unique importance of password security, I believe the service that's entirely dedicated to passwords has a distinct edge over services that put something together to fill out their portfolio. I'll also note that Bitwarden has never had a breach, or system incursion that's lead to customer data exposure. Their encryption implementation is well tested, and has withstood the test of time. None of this is to say that Proton Pass is deficient when it comes to encryption or their overall security model, but in a contest between Pass and Bitwarden, I believe Bitwarden has the edge and is the password manager I use and recommended to others.

r/PasswordManagers · is bitwarden current best open source password manager?

Yes, I would say so. Bitwarden is what I've been using since 2016, and after trying all the other leading managers, I've come back to Bitwarden because it works reliably for me, and I trust their security model. In the past 10 years, nothing has happened to make me question my use of Bitwarden. It's been consistently reliable, and it has faithfully protected my passwords and secure notes.

r/PasswordManagers · MY OUTRAGEOUS NORDPASS RENEWAL RATE

I don't know what NordPass Locker is, but if it's a secure vault to store important and sensitive documents, Ente has that for free in their Ente Locker product. It's a new offering and they're actively developing it, but it's a nice app that works, and it gets noticeably better with every update. Second, it's ridiculous to pay that much money for a second-rate password manager. Bitwarden's free tier includes virtually all of the features that come with a paid NordPass account, and it's an unquestionably superior password manager. If you want their premium upgrade, it's $10/year. Premium gets you integrated TOTP, file attachments, and premium support. Everything else is included free. If I were you, I would do a vault export in NordPass, create a Bitwarden account, and then Import your NordPass export into Bitwarden. Get the hell away from that ridiculous subscription fee from NordPass.

That was an npm issue that only affected CLI users for a very short time. It had no impact on 99% of users, and it was discovered, disclosed, and fixed very quickly. I don't think there are any known instances of user data being compromised as a result of this issue. Every piece of software is susceptible to security breaches and compromise. What matters is how quickly it is discovered and fixed, how extensively user data is compromised, and how quickly users are informed. Bitwarden gets an A on all of these points. Their response was as good as can be expected, and exactly what you'd want to see in the event of a breach.

There's no good reason to use LastPass. They've been breached twice, and caught storing some user data in plaintext. They've squandered their reputation, and should be avoided. Bitwarden, 1Password, KeePass, and *maybe* Proton Pass are the only options to consider.

do you trust bitwarden ? Yes, they are open source and have audits. I would trust them more than closed source pwms. is the free plan worth it ? They have the most generous free plan. You're not missing much with paid. am i getting 2fa / passkeys ? You can use 2fa and passkey to unlock your Bitwarden vault. The 2fa in the logins for other sites is a paid feature, but in a sense it might be more secure if it was stored in another app. Passkeys for logins are included. The one thing that annoys me with Bitwarden is a lot of times an update to the client makes it worse and slower. That's my chief annoyance, since I can deal with the UI changes. That just takes time to get used to. I guess they're teaching patience also.

r/PasswordManagers · Bitwarden scrubs ‘Always free’ and ‘Inclusion’ values from its website as longtime execs step down

I'm off to KeepassXC... I even pay for Bitwarden premium, but them "potentially" changing the free tier isn't the way. I just want stability with something that looks after my passwords... Seems Keepass and its various 3rd party apps are a better bet for long term stability. The removal of the "Always Free" should rightly have people worried as that's a shift from one of the core values of Bitwarden for me.

I've recently been testing Keepass (XC on windows, DX on android) and it's pretty decent. However I have been having a number of issues with URL matching & also a number of issues where KeepassXC & chrome extension doesn't find both username and password field when compared to Bitwarden... I've tried troubleshooting over the last week and haven't managed to get it to work properly all of the time. Could be a user error on my part. Unfortunately at this point I'm likely to still continue using Bitwarden, until I can manage to work out the bugs, no matter how much I want to get my data off the cloud.

r/PasswordManagers · Bitwarden vs proton pass

Okay, let's talk about Proton Pass' Pros and Cons from a 1-Months excessive user experience: **Proton Pass - Pros** 1. **UI design** is much cleaner and more modern. 2. **In-line pre-typing and scrolling** through suggestions works flawlessly. 3. **Managing entries** (pin, edit, view history, delete) is simpler and faster. 4. **Pre-typing speed** is faster overall. **Proton Pass - Cons** 1. Autofill dropdown is **tiny** and doesn’t stretch across the login field. 2. **Credit cards & identities** are paywalled (Bitwarden offers them for free). 3. **Notes** can’t be saved on the free tier either. 4. **No folders** yet. 5. **Autofill fails** on major sites like iCloud and Reddit - even though Proton said this would be fixed in their *Summer 2025 roadmap* (which ended \~3 months ago). 6. **Master password = email password**, which isn’t ideal for security. 7. **Pricing:** €5/month vs Bitwarden’s €0.83/month - despite lacking features. 8. **Password generator window** is very small compared to Bitwarden’s. 9. Free tier limitations basically *force* users like me to switch to Bitwarden. 10. With my Proton Pass Plus expiring Oct 22, 2025 - my credit card & identity info went back behind the paywall. 11. **Extension setup resets** theme and preferences randomly after login - very annoying. 12. The **Proton Team is VERY inconsistent** with **holding up to** their **announced feature release schedules** as **mentioned** in their roadmaps. Many announced features - reaching back to **Fall of 2024** \- still haven't been implemented. r/PasswordManagers · 4 UX issues still holding Bitwarden back (and why I still want to switch from Proton Pass)

Hi, >Have you considered 1Password? I actually tried the free trial of 1Password a few months ago, yes. >No pop animation on autofill, the username/password just appears immediately in the field(s). That’s true. >Pre-typing auto-filters the autofill suggestion dropdown cleanly and quickly. Mostly true - though when I pre-typed an email address, the most likely entry sometimes appeared in the second or third place instead of right at the top, even when there wasn’t another matching entry. That might be a small bug, or maybe 1Password’s pre-typing logic isn’t quite as refined as Proton Pass’s. Not sure. >Scrolling to the bottom of a suggestion list stops all scrolling, and does not transfer to the browser window and does not close the suggestion list. That’s true. >1Password allows deletion from the browser extension. That’s true. >However, two points about this: >Bitwarden does allow deletion from the extension. There's a red trashcan icon on the bottom right when you click into an entry (tested on Windows Firefox and Chrome). Let me know if I'm misunderstanding this issue. Yeah, I was told about that right after posting in r/Bitwarden. In fact, I wasn’t aware of it before, since I didn’t expect that you’d have to select an entry first to edit or delete it - Proton Pass makes those options visible right away without selecting anything. >1Password also matches all your Bitwarden strengths except for cost (autofill dropdown is full sized yet a little more space efficient than BW, uses vaults and tags for organization (rather than folders), and has highly reliable autofill including Reddit and Apple). I 100% agree. And honestly, I don’t really mind 1Password’s pricing - it’s still better than Keeper Security’s, where you can only pay annually instead of monthly (I always prefer monthly). >I will point out that if you're paying monthly rather than annually, 1Password ($4/mo) is actually cheaper than Proton Pass Plus ($5/mo) True - although it’s not exactly 5 Euro here in Europe (even though Switzerland is in Europe). When I paid for Proton Pass Plus, it always came to around 6 Euro instead of 5 Euro due to regional pricing.

r/PasswordManagers · Best Free Password Managers. BitWarden vs Proton Pass vs KeePass vs AliasVault Compare Table

I feel KeePass here is not being well represented because there are a ton of KeePass compatible apps and some do support more features than others. For instance KeePassXC has a companion browser extension as well as support for checking your passwords against data breaches (haveIbeenpwned). Credit card data is also in the works, so hopefully one of these days it will support that. Above all, it is truly an open source project that strives to be independent and give you all the flexibility you want. Wanna choose a cloud of your own? Go ahead. Do you prefer this design over that one, or this feature set over the other one? Change clients as much as you want, your DB file is compatible with all of them! Every other service here is created to eventually move you to a paying tier, and please don't tell me you can host your own Bw instance because 99% of people won't be doing that or pay to have a VPS online all the time. So, what I can say is, I'm happy there are choices so people can see what fits best their use cases, but a table like this is inherently a bad point way to compare online services against something like KeePass which is totally different.

r/PasswordManagers · Just got another breach email from LastPass, what is actually the most secure password manager right now?

None. Every password manager is at risk of being breached (even offline self–hosted password manager, although the risk is considerably less unless you become a target, they also have their own set of tradeoffs and challenges). The important thing to understand is that password managers are designed for possibility of bad actors getting everything the manager has and still not be able to get the contemts of ypur vault, as long as you and the password manager are following best practices for vault security (which is one of the ways - although not theost important way - LastPass failed and you should have abandoned them years ago). So, my recommendation is still Bitwarden for being open source,  and free (with a cheap premium tier, if you want some added bells and whistles) If you really want to get away from online password managers, then I would go with a Keepass variant like KeepassXC and KeepasDX (for mobile) and use Syncthing to keep the vault in sync across your devices.

    r/PasswordManagers · I Lastpass a viable option now?

No. LastPass sin isn't that they were breached but the way they handled it. Unless their is a complete changeover in leadership (ideally have them spun out from whatever private equity group owns them) I wouldn't trust them. Even if that happens I see no reason to switch to them when free, open source alternatives like Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and KeePass exist.

r/PasswordManagers · Which password manager should I switch to from LastPass?

Long as you are following best practices for a password manager (randomly generated master passphrase, using 2FA, etc) either will keep your passwords secure. Bitwarden is open-source, and has a fully functional free tier (and a $20/yr paid tier with some useful but not necessary features). The biggest knock against Bitwarden is that UI/UX is functional but too utilitarian for some people. 1Password is closed source and comparatively more expensive. It is noted for its superior UI/UX. Some also feel the secret key feature offers an additional level of security (personally, I feel it is an unnecessary complication long as you follow best practices for a PWM). My advice give Bitwarden a try. If you like it, great, maybe get the premium tier (or just use the free version, like I said it will do everything you need a PWM to do). If you don't like it sign up for a month of 1Password.

r/PasswordManagers · What Password Manager Is Better In Your Opinion 1Password, Bitwarden, LastPass, Dashlane, Or Proton Pass And Why?

Bitwarden is known to be the world's best major free password manager in the market so you can check them out. They have many core features that should be in a password manager included in their free plan. And if you need to upgrade to their personal plan for additional features, it's only $10 a year. You can also check Keepass which is completely free and gives you everything you need but you will have to put your trust in yourself and make sure you don't lose your passwords and manage them correctly.

r/PasswordManagers · Advice moving away from lastpass?

I stopped using **LastPass** years ago when it was acquired by new ownership that made negative changes. I use free **Bitwarden** as my online password manager and **KeePassXC** as my backup offline password manager. Both with long strong random master passwords and 2FA. I do not keep TOTP 2FA seed codes in the same vault as my passwords. I use a **separate vault** for TOTP 2FA seed codes and recovery codes. I have a little crypto. I do not keep any **crypto private keys** in cloud storage or on my PC. I have a separate KeePassXC crypto key vault stored **air-gapped** on a removable Transcend industrial grade **MLC flash drive** with ECC that is only plugged in temporarily when I need the private keys. I use a separate flash drive with **keyfiles** for KeePassXC 2FA. I keep backup copies of my KeePassXC password vaults, 2FA vaults, and keyfiles in **fireproof safes** in two locations. Bitwarden has a paid version for $10/year, but I do not need the features of the paid version. If I buy more crypto, I would two **Tangem** hardware wallets for stronger air-gapped security.

r/PasswordManagers · Just got another breach email from LastPass, what is actually the most secure password manager right now?

    > (...) Bitwarden seemed to know which 14 users downloaded the affected version? I dunno how, but that is a separate question. Yes, which raises some real alarms concerning how much they are tracking user activity. Which very much aligns with the UX being updated to actively hinder people who used Bitwarden as a secret store (launch, search for the secret, copy, paste) versus integrating it with your browser and OS to let it auto-fill everything. But > Under the circumstances, a general broadcast might not be the best approach. The only reason to not disclose "A very limited number of users were compromised. We have reached out to those who were impacted, but if the following applies to you, please change passwords and blah blah blah" is because you care more about marketing and public perception than actually being a security company. Which... a password management service actively is.

They have email addresses. In many cases they have billing information on top of that. And the disclosure is a quiet blog post. Maybe you will argue that this specific vulnerability doesn't merit more. I... question your judgment, but sure. The point is more that it paints a really poor picture of what would happen in the event bitwarden corp have a more meaningful one.

    r/PasswordManagers · do you trust bitwarden ?

As of right this moment? More than most companies, but with caveats. As I see them rapidly speedrun late stage capitalism, go out of their way to remove inclusivity from their stated values (fro what little that was worth), and change the UX of their app to strongly discourage copy pasting passwords in favor of giving them full visibility over everything I do? I have one more test to do before I switch back to keepass (backed by my home NAS and Tailscale). Then it is just export, import, clean up, and I am good to go.

r/PasswordManagers · [GUIDANCE NEEDED] I'm a free NordPass user, I'm deciding to switch or not to switch to Bitwarden

Maybe do a bit more research. Bitwarden has shown rapid signs of beginning its spiral down the toilet of private equity. Right now it is mostly verbiage but... there is a reason a lot of people (self included) are evaluating what ship to jump to (back to keepass for me now that I can do challenge/response with a yubikey instead of sequence based auth). And I'll add on: Even if you don't care about actively scrubbing inclusivity from branding: My biggest immediate complaint with bitwarden is the UX change for the desktop client. Now it immediately tries to launch as a background process (unless you stop it). And even something as simple as starting the cursor in the search bar after unlocking it is gone. Because Bitwarden corp don't want you using it as a secure(-ish) store for passwords anymore. They want you to integrate it into your browser/OS and let them handle everything for you. And I shouldn't have to explain why a company rapidly speed running private equity hell wanting more invasive permissions is bad...

r/PasswordManagers · What is the best online password manager right now? Bitwarden, NordPass,1Password, etc?

Unless you're an unusual user, like with a billion dollars, which would make you a target... any of the known and respected apps will work just fine to protect your passwords. They all would take years of intensive computing to brute force break. You know the LastPass history, so scratch that shit. Then it just comes down to ease of use, features, and how supportive/reliable the company is. Personally, I'd rather take a beating that to deal with 1Password ever again (multiple issues, poor support). Some people don't care what it costs, but I do and that another reason to ditch 1P and a few others. That basically leaves Bitwarden as the one with no major detriments. Their UI isn't the best, and I've complained about that because i'm from a design background, but it's mature and it just works. And it's free or cheap (even with the recent doubling of fee, it half the cost). I'm currently using Apple Passwords and Bitwarden (free) together. And as soon as I gain a little more confidence in Apple's app I intend to delete Bitwarden. So far nothing comes close to Passwords for being smooth, reliable, and well integrated. In other words, I'm just tired of messing with all of them, they are not fun.

Yes. Many reasons. I was a 1P user for several years, but after the big switcheroo it was a major headache that went on a loooong time. Everything from mobile app not working to payments issues and getting locked out, unnecessary complexity, to slow response from support, lying about fixing the mobile app (when on forever) and finally unable to get a usable export of my data. Plus they're way overprices and have a holier than thou attitude. They act like you're working for them. Bitwarden is just clean, efficient, affordable, and it works just as good if not better.

    r/PasswordManagers · Why not keePass?

I think both are good options, there may be small pro's and con's. On the security side, keeping your encrypted secrets on someone else's server in a zero-knowledge open source scheme is really not a concern AS LONG AS you have a long strong master password. Even the LastPass folks would be safe if they had a strong enough master password. The open source apps from bitwarden can be vetted to the same extent as the open source apps from keepass. For keepass if you want to access the database on multiple devices you have to make arrangements to have the file accessible on multiple devices, which sometimes works fine depending on your sync or cloud service, and sometimes can be a bit finicky. Personally I use both. I use bitwarden for my passwords and credentials. I also use keepass (XC and DX) but for a different purpose. I store 2fa recovery codes in keepass and I also store totp seeds for a very small number of critical accounts that have yubikey... for example bitwarden. If for some reason I didn't have access to a yubikey I would much rather get in by using totp 2fa than by using recovery code (which wipes out 2fa altogether). I feel my keepass database (protected by password and keyfile) is *slightly* better protected than my ente auth database. On top of that keepassXC interface is really flexible (searching, sorting, tagging) and I like to use it for storing other info like my device pins (in case I happen to forget those). And keepassXC is my backup plan in case for some reason bitwarden servers were inaccessible for an extended period (I would import my bitwarden password protected encrypted json export into xc). Back to pro's/con's of bitwarden vs keepass, I'll mention bitwarden has some other capabilities which could be handy: credential sharing via organizations, info sharing via bitwarden send, emergency access option etc. tldr - I use both but for different purposes. I think they are both good options. I don't see any big downside to using bitwarden but I don't disagree with those who prefer keepass.

Sure they deserved to lose everyone's trust a few years back, but how long do you hold that against them when they have the same certs as the other players? I don't know the right answer. I don't think there is a password manager that doesn't offer passphrase. > ultra easy password sharing that doesn’t require proton account to access Agreed. You'd have to use a secure note in bitwarden and manually transfer the info in (or else get someone to get an account and set up an organization, which is not a smooth process). > advanced account protection with anomaly detection Sounds like a generic term to describe the monitoring that any company would do. The devil is in the details. I'm not saying proton doesn't do better, but some buzzwords don't shed any light on the subject.

FWIW, that bug doesn't deactivate 2FA for your vault. Locking/unlocking is considered safe for your local BW app. (and it might even still be considered as "MFA" as it needs your device, access to your device and your unlocking method) That said, I obviously also hope that this bug will soon be fixed.

I used bitwarden for about a month and switched to proton pass because proton's app recognition is better. r/PasswordManagers · Proton Pass vs. Bitwarden

I'm in the same boat as you, but I'm confused between Proton Pass and 1Password. [Here is my post](https://www.reddit.com/r/PasswordManagers/comments/1re55mh/proton_pass_vs_1password_what_should_i_choose/)  Here are the necessary points regarding Bitwarden and Proton Pass. Bitwarden: 1. The UI feels ugly compared to 1Password. 2. You can log into your Bitwarden account using a passkey. 3. Sometimes the autofill might not work (tested on Android). 4. Unless you want to store your 2FA keys in Bitwarden, the paid plan is not necessary. 5. Though, it shouldn't be a problem for most users, they use Microsoft Azure Cloud. [Link](https://bitwarden.com/help/data-storage/) 6. As of now, there is no AI implementation, unlike 1Password. Proton Pass: 1. It's an ecosystem product, so if you are using multiple Proton services, it will blend easily. 2. Even as an ecosystem product, you can use a separate password for your Proton Pass, which you need after logging into your Proton account to access Proton Pass. 3. SimpleLogin is integrated inside it, allowing you to use separate email aliases for different types of logins without switching to another application. 4. The paid plan includes SL premium, so you don't need to pay separately. 5. You can't import or export the database from their mobile app; it is only possible on desktop. 6. The free plan includes only 2 folders. Unlike Bitwarden, where you can keep your logins on the homepage without placing them in any folder, in Proton Pass, you must store your logins in one of the folders. I hope this helps.

r/PasswordManagers · NordPass; anyone use it?

What are your opinions on RoboForm? It's a well-known password manager that has survived for more than a decade. I'm looking for a reliable password manager. I want to move away from Bitwarden — it's not to my taste: the UI feels dated, autofill function suddenly stops sometimes, and it doesn't suggest autofill for certain sites even when the exact web addresses are added. 1Password and Dashlane are too costly for me; I don't feel comfortable paying $50 or more for a single service. Proton Pass is an ecosystem product and I strongly oppose the "all eggs in one basket" approach — I use their mail service (will switch soon) and will start using their VPN in future. I even tried Psono (recommended on the PG website), but its cloud-based version still feels immature. Can you recommend a good one? I don't have any plan to self host and due to multi-device usages, I'm looking for cloud-based options only.

But they are well established in the market. I can create another Bitwarden account any day, but their recent update makes the dark theme bluish, and I don't like it. I always try to use the pitch-black theme in any app, so I'm searching for another option. Proton Pass is there, but when I create an account using my ProtonMail address, it will be linked with my email account, which I don't want to do, so I eliminate it. The rest of the cloud-based password managers are closed source, I guess, and 1Password may be the best among them.

r/PasswordManagers · Trying out Biwtwardeb and Proton Pass - differences in approach

I'll play devils advocate here: 1. You didn't state what kind of new users. I am a tech savvy user but I've only ever used the Bitwarden CLI once. 2. A password manager is just that, it manages your passwords. Email forwarder is not a function of a password manager. Email forwarding has nothing to do with passwords. Yes it's a nice to have as an additional feature. 3. Email alias has nothing to do with managing passwords. Again, it's a nice to have additional feature. I have both Bitwarden premium and Proton Pass. I do like how you can view reports in Proton Pass mobile. Bitwarden you cannot which is a major let down. Proton Pass supports passkeys but they don't support importing them from other password mangers / sources. I think this is a major fail. How are you going to release Passkey support but not the ability to import them. As of today, comparing Bitwarden vs Proton Pass is like comparing apples to oranges.

r/PasswordManagers · My 1-Month Verdict on Using Bitwarden as My Primary Password Manager (as a Former Proton Pass User)

I am late to this but figured I'd give my opinion anyways. I've been a Bitwarden cloud hosted custimer since 2020 and a paid cloud hosted customer since 2021 and an organization cloud hosted customer for work since 2022. I also use 1Password at another job since 2023. The cons of Bitwarden for me is Custom Fields. I have some items that were created as notes since they do not have a logon. Think serial numbers for items like a washing machine. In some of these notes I have the URI to the exact model or owners manual. However I have to create the custom field as text. It would be nice to have a URI custom field so that you and click the open button so the URI opens in your web browser vs having to copy and paste. I also wish Bitwarden had a way to link or track social logins like 1Password does with the "sign in with" option. From my research it looks like only 1Password offers this option. The entire collections thing for Bitwarden is very confusing at first but is still kind of a pain when it comes to sharing, especially with departments / teams at work. I think it would be better to have multiple vaults like 1Password has. The other thing I don't like is how they do their new feature requests. You have to submit the request via their community forum and then people have to vote on it. There has been a topic since 2018 with over 700+ votes but they ignore that to work on other requests that have far less votes. Like SSH agent. The Pros for Bitwarden is their folders. Some people are anti folders but pro tags which I've n ver really understood tags but I do now. However the way my brain works is I know I have a login in folder X but I don't remember what it is called. This is where Bitwarden shines over 1 Password because 1Password doesn't have folders and every item is in 1 giant list that you have to scroll through to get to which I don't like. Bitwarden is increasing their premium pricing which isn't that big of a deal since they are cheaper than any other password manger but it does piss me off because in later 2023 they took away a feature of premium and gave it to the free two and never replaced it.

It needs to work in Windows as well. Using anything Apple on non-Apple hard-/software is just a pain. And I saw the news article on Ars Technica and read it in-depth. It's a very specific attack vector that's basically non-existent if you're a one-user account that doesn't do any password sharing and other online based recovery methods. In other words, it can be avoided, and Bitwarden is already implementing fixes.

r/PasswordManagers · Proton Pass vs. Bitwarden

Yeah I'm not gonna do the offline/self-hosted route. Just too inconvenient, and I'm not confident I'd be able to secure a server better than dedicated security teams at these password companies (where security is their most important product). So I'm definitely looking at cloud-hosted solutions like Bitwarden and Proton Pass.

I’ve been exclusively using keepassXC for the past 3-4 months. It sync easy enough with my Nextcloud instance, and KeePassium app on my iPhone. The browser extension can be a bit annoying from time to time but it does work. I’ve only had a couple of instances where keepass on my desktop and keepass on my phone were both in use at the same time and it asked me to choose which file was more recent, but that is far and few between. The only thing I wish is that on my phone when a new login is created be it through an app or browser that something popped up to save my credentials into KeePassium. That would really smooth out the experience for me. If vaultwarden or bitwarden can accept my keepass database I might be tempted to try it considering everyone seems to agree is the most comprehensive all around.

I used Bitwarden for just shy of 8 years, and recently switched my family over to ProtonPass. In my experience the autofill, UI, and general "feel" of ProtonPass is better than Bitwarden. The autofill feature on BW always seemed "clunky" to me in the browser so I turned it off and manually copied and pasted what I needed. BW autofill on iOS worked fine most of the time. I rarely encounter autofill issues with PP, and I think that when I do it is because some of my domains don't match exactly in PP, once I refreshed them it usually solves the issue - other times I assume that the fields on the websites aren't flagged correctly. Both are solid password managers, my family opted to move to PP simply due to the fact that we are Proton subscribers and some of the recent developments with BW (while not terribly concerning currently) got me looking at alternative options.

I tried Bitwarden because it was cheaper, but it genuinely was not as nice to use or as functional as 1Password, so I switched back to what works for me. The measly price increase is hardly worth the stability, time, efforts to save $10. Do you though. If you find one with emergency backup, security based on your machine so if they get hacked like LastPass exposing encrypted passwords, where bitearden, keeper, etc have nothing but their word, the cleanliness of the interface, and ease across android, etc where many numerous complaints over the others having issues with android, to save pennies over a year, let me know how that is. After deep research, nothing could compare. I paid for a family plan for 1yr to allow myself to get in, have backups on backups, amd if I pass away, family can get in. Can more do it, no. If they do, they dont off secondary security for database exploits. Do what you want Do you want cheap, security, stability, etc. If your $19 dollars if worth your security, do what you will

Recently PP has been recognizing my entry even when the url is not a perfect match. PP then asks if I want it to save the correct url, with or without autofill, as a new PP entry. If I agree, the record is saved and the password is entered automatically. Works great! A big improvement over BW. I had given up on autofill with BW, depending on copy and paste. Sorry. Not an advertisement. I hate PE’s influence on the U.S. economy. I love BW’s business and mission. The product worked as expected. I felt confident using it. The UI needs improvement but not a deciding factor for me. I am also strong supporter of Proton as well. I was not going to use Proton Pass because I wanted to keep security separate from other applications. (more reason for BW). But PE is only concerned with pillaging for profits, destroying businesses in the process, so I jumped ship. I had tested PP a year ago. It needed work. proton has made considerable progress with Pass. I really was surprised that it works as well as it does in my environment. I’m all Apple (MacOS, iOS) and I take good care to encrypt, use complex and unique passwords, and passkeys where available and hardware key (Yubico) at the most critical risks, and 2FA codes where hardware key is not able to be configured. Hope that helps provide my human perspective.

r/PasswordManagers · Lastpass told me to delete my account because they fucked up - Where should I go?

You have a lot of options. Bitwarden and 1Password seem to be the top two. 1Password's superpower is its use of the "secret key" and the fact that it's probably the most reliable at autoentry of credentials. But that second advantage of 1Password (autoentry) is not quite as persuasive an advantage as it might seem. Bitwarden is also very reliable, and it's open source. The fact that it doesn't autoentry *everything* means that you're more aware of what's going on when you use it, which I think is a plus most of the time. NordPass is technically a little behind 1Password and Bitwarden in some ways (not in encryption, but in its compatibility with websites, its implementation of 2FA token generation which is a new thing for NordPass). I like NordPass's UI. The UX on the other hand still has some bumps. But it's worth considering. And there are many others. We're in a golden age of password managers. Using *any* third party password manager (i.e. anything NOT built by the platform you're using, that is, not from Apple Microsoft or Google) is a huge plus. The only one I would NOT recommend is LastPass.

    r/PasswordManagers · 1password o nordpass

Did you change your original post? You seem to me to be asking about 1Password vs **NordPass** but all the previous responders seem to think you're asking about 1Password vs Bitwarden. I feel like I've missed something (although I'm used to that feeling). Re NordPass: It's got a very attractive user interface and it's rather less complicated than 1Password is. It has fewer "features" than 1Password, but it does everything a password manager truly needs to do these days, it's very secure, and because of the less complicated feature set and the attractive design, I think a lot of people would find it easier to use than 1Password (or almost any other product on the market). Just in terms of the app itself, NordPass is my favorite. But 1Password has the advantage in one or two areas that are important to many users and might be important to you. First, 1Password can store your 2FA seeds and generate TOTPs (those temporary second-step authentication codes) for you, while NordPass for consumers cannot, at least not at this time. (NordPass commercial *can* and I get the feeling that this feature may be coming to regular NP, but it's not there yet.) Second, while NordPass does a very good job overall of logging you into websites automatically, 1Password does this better — to be honest, better than anybody else. Not a fatal flaw of NordPass in my opinion, but part of the "UX" (user experience) that isn't as good in NordPass as the "UI" (user interface). NOTE: Arguably, having your TOTPs come from someplace other than your password manager is a good thing, because it avoids the "eggs in one basket" problem. This is absolutely true. But the eggs-in-one-basket problem can be overstated. There's always a trade off between convenience and security, and we all need to find the balance between one and the other that works for us. In my opinion the main problem with NordPass's lack of support for generating TOTPs is that, in other respects, NordPass's excellence is that it makes a rather complicated technical problem easier to deal with than any of the alternatives — *except* for the fact that having to go to your authenticator to get a TOTP makes using NordPass rather *more* trouble to use than 1Password or Bitwarden et al. NOTE 2: NordPass is implementing passkeys pretty well. And if you use a passkey to sign into a site, you don't really need to have TOTP seeds in the app generating codes for you. The problem is that passkeys are still not supported as extensively or as effectively as we all hope they will be some day. Not NP's fault, but a fact that does affect NordPass's usability. That said, they're both terrific and you can sleep soundly using either one (assuming of course that you use them properly).

r/PasswordManagers · Which password manager should I switch to from LastPass?

I've been on 1Password for a few years but I recently decided to switch to Bitwarden, for a few reasons: \- I like the open source model of Bitwarden way more than the closed source approach of 1Password \- 1Password's bump up in price recently was incredibly disappointing (30% + of price hike!) \- Bitwarden has an incredibly competitive pricing model (you can also use it for Free if you don't plan to use their 2FA authenticator!) \- I like how flexible Bitwarden is; in the Web extension the autofiller works better than 1Password and allows you to do customizations (like specifying which fields it should look for in those cases where autofiller doesn't seem to work) \- I like to support open source when possible (that's why I actually chose to pay for Bitwarden; as I said, it's really cheap - the price of a cup of coffee per month)

Bitwarden was where I landed, after going through Lastpass first and then 1Password for a few years. I did like 1Password, but I didn't like their pricing model. I moved to Bitwarden and I honestly feel content enough to stay there and even support the (Open Source) propject by purchasing their plan (even though I'm not using their 2FA); It has a very fair pricing model (even after they increased their price) and I hope they keep improving it.

r/PasswordManagers · Just found out Bitwarden quietly removed "always free" from their site, starting to look around

I didn't misunderstand. OP was complaining about Bitwarden removing the "always free" clause in the pricing page; That wording ("Always free") is still there (see the screenshot I linked in my previous comment) and, as I said, it was added back at a very short notice (fortunately!). I completely share the sentiment about the possible downturns in the change or management but I have hopes this won't go down badly. Also, let's not forget Bitwarden is ridiculously cheap for the critical feature it offers; in my opinion a software/company providing such a critical product "should" be supported financially and I'm more than happy to pay for the Premium version even if I don't use their TOTP feature at all

r/PasswordManagers · Advice moving away from lastpass?

I just switched from LP to bitwarden a couple weeks ago, and TBH I find it a pain in the ass. It's always locking my vault. Also many times it won't fill apps, so I have to open it, search the app, copy the PW, switch back to the thing I'm trying to open, and paste. That's *six steps*. LP was a lot better about filling passwords and wasn't constantly locking my vault. Yes I know I can adjust the unlocked time on BW, but even so...

Keyguard is not "true open source" and it's also not open source, it is only source available. And it's not even on F-Droid or even Izzy. Personally i wouldn't recommend using a third party client like keyguard and instead just use the official Bitwarden app, but since keyguard is source available you can check the code yourself if there's any suspicious things and you have to check it every update since this is about password managers which is very very important. Im not here to have beef with the developer tho, i just wanted to clarify some things because as i said, this is about password managers which basically store all your passwords of every websites, every apps, every services, and everything valuable.

r/PasswordManagers · What Password Manager Is Better In Your Honest Opinion Proton Pass, Roboform, Or Bitwarden And Why?

I do wish 1p had a free tier available. However, even if there was a free tier, it likely wouldn't apply to me - I use the 1p features pretty extensively. I understand the "greed" perspective - and I don't want to be overly presumptive - but in the past 10 years, have you had a Netflix subscription? Gone to a Disney park? Maintained a cell phone plan? All of these have increased their prices nearly annually. If 1p continues to raise prices annually, it would be a serious concern for me - however, a once a decade increase, I'm not overly concerned - I look at the competition and I could save a few dollars changing - to say Bitwarden Premium - but a lot of the convenience factor of 1p would be secondary - if nothing else, learning a new platforms interface - the small savings wasn't worth it. Just my two cents.

r/PasswordManagers · Proton Pass vs. Bitwarden

One suggestion: Use KeePassXC for Windows and KeePassium for iOS and Mac for important passwords (email, financial, Apple, Google, MS IDs and cloud password manager login info). KeePass2Android is also available for Android. Keep KeePass file local and edit only on one device (e.g. primary computer). Manually copy master file to devices when passwords are changed. These accounts and passwords change typically change infrequently. Use Bitwarden as cloud password manager for all other accounts and passwords. Backup Bitwarden passwords to offline file periodically. Using a local .kbdx file keeps the most important passwords out of cloud storage. Plus you only need to remember the one very strong password for the KeePass file. The Bitwarden password can be very complex and strong since you don’t need to remember it. Bitwarden gives the convenience of a cross platform cloud database for the hundreds of other passwords. KeePassXC is free. Bitwarden free works fine. KeePassium free works fine for a single database. KeePassium Pro lifetime is worth paying for to manage multiple databases for the family, work, etc and the purchase includes family sharing so everyone in your Apple family can use KeePassium Pro. No subscription fees needed. Where I still struggle is how to effectively use passkeys in place of passwords.

Lack of communication. They took how many years to reveal these breaches? 3. The free plan is a POS. 4. I wouldn't give my money to a company that can't communicate to their customers. 5. Lack of MFA code integration with the main product. 6. There are superior products out there like the free version of Bitwarden or the powerful 1Password (not free.)

Thats pretty accurate. ProtonPass is a nice app. Head to head, it is far superior to Bitwarden with the exception of CC Autofill (on Safari, in beta on Chrome) I honestly feel they are 1-2 revisions from completely leap frogging Bitwarden. My "whats missing to replace 1PW" (FOR ME) is: **Must-Have Features (Deal Breakers)** \- Credit Card Autofill \- Folders and/or Tags \- Favorites (or multi-folder support to cover this) \- More template types, organized by category (similar to 1Password) \- Browser biometrics \- Markdown or HTML support in Notes \- Travel Vault \- Password version history \- Secure sharing with fine-tuned controls \- Cross Vault search \- Integrated 2FA Autofill on iOS **Nice-to-Have Features** \- Expiration dates & reminders (e.g., “Passport expires in December” with custom alerts) \- Smarter URL matching rules \- Better favicon/custom icon handling \- Large display mode (like 1Password) \- Passkey monitoring (also limited in Bitwarden) \- Location-based entries

I'll walk back some comments on Keepass.. I didn't realize that Keepass can use a front end like Strongbox... So.. Ioaded Strongbox and it's better than Keepass appearance wise. Still.. not the best UI, I'd still rate over Bitwarden. It does have some nice features, it brought over ALL 1PW attachments (where BW fails) and it even has tags and brought them over as well. And.. it has expiration dates! Feature for feature, from a cursory 30 minute trial, it blows Bitwarden away. All in all not a bad experience, the UI could use some lipstick. It show everything in a "list view" where I kept looking for something a little different. Though they are a mess from a company perspective, I did like the LastPass "card view". I think Dashlane does similar. All said, not bad...

For me, Bitwarden is a seamless cross-platform product. It syncs across all devices, including Windows and Android (and others). You can do this more manually (and possibly prone to corruption) with KeePass (or KeePassXC). If you don't need to run the manager on more than one system, then KeePass (I prefer KeePassXC) is better. Bitwarden probably has some features that KeePass doesn't, but KeePass likely has many features that Bitwarden doesn't.

r/PasswordManagers · 4 UX issues still holding Bitwarden back (and why I still want to switch from Proton Pass)

Have you considered 1Password? I know it's a different animal and not what you're asking about, and it's more pricey and not open source, I just want to put this info out there FWIW. I just did some testing with 1Password and it satisfies your 4 main UI/UX/QOL issues: 1. No pop animation on autofill, the username/password just appears immediately in the field(s). 2. Pre-typing auto-filters the autofill suggestion dropdown cleanly and quickly. 3. Scrolling to the bottom of a suggestion list stops all scrolling, and does not transfer to the browser window and does not close the suggestion list. 4. 1Password allows deletion from the browser extension. However, two points about this: 1. **Bitwarden does allow deletion from the extension.** There's a red trashcan icon on the bottom right when you click into an entry (tested on Windows Firefox and Chrome). Let me know if I'm misunderstanding this issue. 2. 1Password does not support editing within the extension, rather it brings up the desktop client. This was a big sticking point for me at first but I've grown accustomed to it as a minor tradeoff. 1Password also matches all your Bitwarden strengths except for cost (autofill dropdown is full sized yet a little more space efficient than BW, uses vaults and tags for organization (rather than folders), and has highly reliable autofill including Reddit and Apple). The pricing, closed-source code, and reliance on the desktop app is not for everyone, so I understand if this comparison isn't useful. I will point out that if you're paying monthly rather than annually, 1Password ($4/mo) is actually cheaper than Proton Pass Plus ($5/mo) while being about 10x more fully featured. Annual plan for both is $3/mo.

1Password and Bitwarden both have great URL matching and auto-fill in my experience. Bitwarden gives you more detailed control over the URL matching, and 1Password is a little more "magical" about it (for instance, 1Password is aware that the login page for Wall Street Journal is on the `dowjones.com`. domain and matches my login even though I actually only have it saved as the domain `wsj.com`. They both have some different pros and very few cons -- they both offer free trials, check them both out.

My first non-browser password manager was LastPass, which was an okay experience up until they started pay-walling features that used to be free. Oh, and their almost constant data breaches I then moved to Nordpass for 4ish years, which was okay. They retired the desktop client sometime last year which sucked as it was definitely the easier way to use it, the browser extension tended to be a bit temperamental, it became infinitely more temperamental after they shoved more features in to it due to the retirement of the desktop client. My main issue is their subscription renewal terms are quite annoying. I've been using Bitwarden for a month or so and it's been okay. The UI has some annoying quirks and definitely doesn't look as polished compared to others I've used. It's got some good additional features as well. Overall it's a good choice from what I've seen. Could definitely be better but it's certainly not the worst I've seen.

Of the two, I've only had experience with Bitwarden, and compared to LastPass (which was the last password manager I used), it's much better, fully free (if that's the route you choose), and you can choose to upgrade to a paid subscription for a few extras and priority support. If you've never used a password manager, they all can require a little learning curve, but it really is pretty easy to pick up. I will agree that autofilling (especially on mobile devices) is not optimal, but I've seen a few different such programs in action, and none seemed to handle it especially well. On your laptop, it will work better, though not perfectly all the time. It depends on the website.

My suggestion: Export your LastPass vault, import it into Bitwarden, run them in parallel and see how it goes. I was also a LastPass user until the breach two or three years ago. I started with LastPass when the free plan was more generous devices you could use. I moved to the family plan because I wanted my wife to move off Google passwords. I suspect that there’s some hesitation to move off because of the time and familiarity with LastPass, I had that as well. Considering the breach I thought it prudent to get a backup of my LP vault. I then saw that Bitwarden had a means to import the LP vault and I could try it out in parallel with the free tier. After a few days I had no hesitation to switch over completely and I got my wife to move over as well.

If you use Proton Mail it's really nice to use Pass with it... especially with the aliases. That's actually why I ditched Bitwarden. Otherwise regarding Bitwarden, the existence of VaultWarden is great, and the fact that it's open source and E2EE lets you be more or less at peace regarding the US laws governing the company. The option to have your data in the EU is nice too, even if it's still subject to the Cloud Act... it's encrypted either way. On the other hand, I saw some changes recently that haven't been very well-received since the new CEO took over at Bitwarden.

Yes, to the extent that it worked for some, but in daily life it is probably the time-consuming and most useless extension you can use to ensure safety. It is far better to use passive anti-virus/website blockers like AVAST or Malwarebytes. \* Yes, even avast is much better than bitwarden. The entire reason to download bitwarden is to keep your passwords safe. But if you are using chrome for some reason chrome just saves your master password :| making it the most useless piece of software that makes it even more worse for you in the case you get hacked. And daily life wise, getting access to any site means you would need to put in your master password every time. You want to log into a website? want to log onto youtube? Master password. TLDR: IT is a complete waste of time and space.

Also, keep in mind: Just because there was a brute force attack on, say, 1Password (or one of its vaults) doesn’t mean it would succeed. In the case of at least 1Password & Bitwarden (and probably several others) if you follow the guidance and recommended working practices, the vaults would be extremely secure. If encrypted with a long, unique, random password or passphrase, and used the recommended Argon2id key derivation (Bitwarden example), then it would be extremely difficult to brute force such a vault.

r/PasswordManagers · bitwarden vs proton pass: which autofill actually works?

I've been on BitWarden since the 2021 LastPass breach. It feels pretty similar to LastPass which made it easy to switch to. It's FOSS, which also appeals to me. That said, I've been eying Proton Pass lately. The three main reasons I'm thinking of leaving BitWarden are: 1. They've been getting involved more and more with venture capital / private equity recently, which concerns me about the long-term direction of the app in terms of QC, pricing, etc. Furthermore, their longtime CEO pivoted to an advisory role earlier this year, and his replacement specializes in mergers and acquisition. Too many smoke signs warning of a potential impending sale, and likely to an ownership group that doesn't share the same values. 2. Speaking of values, BitWarden removed values of "always free" and "inclusion" from its website earlier this year as well. Yeah, feels like the writing is on the wall. 3. From a simple use perspective, their web extension has had on and off issues the past few years, including a recent memory leak that was bad enough that it caused my browser to crash more than once. That leak has been fixed now, but their extension just hasn't been great generally for a while.

i started with keepass way back around the same time. in retrospect, i wish that i would have just stuck with it (or keepass compatible apps). i’ve switched between lastpass and bitwarden throughout the years, but one thing that i unfortunately don’t have is the history, since migrations don’t support that well. now that i’ve been using strongbox for a few years, i have at least that much, and i don’t know that i’ll ever not use keepass going forward.

r/PasswordManagers · Lastpass told me to delete my account because they fucked up - Where should I go?

If autofill is a deciding factor for you, 1Password. As with any password manager the autofill won’t be exactly perfect, since its so dependent on specific websites and OS APIs. The user experience of 1Password is the best in the industry. In terms of security 1Password and BitWarden are top notch. I use 1Password and am very happy with it. The pricing is pretty much the same between the two, last I checked. Trial them both and see which you prefer. That way you only have to move one more time.

r/PasswordManagers · Just got another breach email from LastPass, what is actually the most secure password manager right now?

There are lots of good safe password managers. Bitwarden, KeePass Proton, 1password, other KeePass branches. The critical variable is just to get a good one and be willing to leave if the founders do and the new owners aren't trustworthy. The real secret is your password. If Bitwarden were to lose their vaults, it would not hurt me. In fact, even Lastpass losing its stuff wouldn't have affected me. My password requires brute force and is too long for a nation state to crack in a few million years. By then, either I'll be dead, or have stopped caring. The big factor is long unique random passwords for every site and an unbreakable master password. That's 99%.

    r/PasswordManagers · KeePass

Those 3 are all cloud-based and profit-making companies. They are all excellent and have fine products. KeePass and KeePassXC (both use the same database). They are open source, not-for-profit, and locally based, not necessarily holding anything in the cloud. Normally, they operate with a simple database file on your computer. You can copy the file to your phone, and it'll work there using any of several apps. All five products are excellent. There is a lot of convenience to having all your passwords and secure notes in the cloud. There is an extra layer of security not having them in the cloud. Proton is pretty new, but the others have all been around for many years and are thoroughly tested and reliable. I believe that if you have a strong password and all encryption is done locally, there is no real risk to having the database “in the cloud”. However, not being there at all must be more secure. If you have a really strong password, and are comfortable, I'd recommend Bitwarden. You can use it for free. There are extra benefits to an inexpensive paid version. If you are uncomfortable using the cloud, use either of the KeePass programs. Any one of those 5 will give you a hundred times the safety and convenience of re-using, remembering or writing down passwords or even letting your browser handle it.

r/PasswordManagers · is bitwarden current best open source password manager?

Bitwarden is still probably the easy default if you want open source and don’t want to babysit anything, but I wouldn’t treat it as the only good answer. KeePassXC makes sense if you want local-first, Vaultwarden if you’re already comfortable self-hosting, and Psono is another one I’d put on the list if the self-hosted/team side matters. Coming from LastPass, almost any of those will feel less annoying.

r/PasswordManagers · [GUIDANCE NEEDED] I'm a free NordPass user, I'm deciding to switch or not to switch to Bitwarden

I ran into the same one-device limitation when I tried NordPass a while back. It got annoying fast bouncing between phone and laptop, especially when school stuff and personal logins started blending together. Bitwarden is a solid next step if you want something you're not locked into. The import process can be a bit of a mess depending on how NordPass formats your CSV, but I just took a text editor to it and cleaned things up before importing-tedious but not awful once you do a few entries by hand to verify the pattern. If you ever decide you want total control over where your vault lives, a self-hosted option like Psono makes that possible without giving up the “sync everywhere” convenience. I used it for a small project where security had to stay internal, and it worked fine across multiple devices through a browser extension and local server setup. Probably overkill if all you want is basic cross-device sync, though.

Bitwarden is a solid choice if you want a simple open-source password manager for personal use. The free plan is strong, and moving from LastPass makes sense if you want something cleaner and less restrictive. For teams or enterprise use, I would also look at something like password vault for enterprises since it is built more for shared password management, access controls, approvals, and auditing. For personal use though, Bitwarden is a very practical starting point.

I would say so. Bitwarden is still the best open-source password manager today, mainly because of how easy it is to use. Even so, I personally switched to KeePassXC because it autofills for me on some pages where Bitwarden doesn't. But even with that minor detail, I think Bitwarden offers the most balanced and accessible experience, and that's why I consider it the best open-source option currently available.

You are making a great move. LastPass is heavily restricted now, whereas Bitwarden is widely considered the best free, open-source password manager available. Why Bitwarden Beats LastPass 100% Free Multi-Device Sync: Unlike LastPass, Bitwarden lets you sync unlimited passwords across both your phone and computer simultaneously for free. Open Source & Secure: The code is completely public and audited by security pros, making it much safer than LastPass. Easy Migration: Bitwarden has a direct "Import from LastPass" tool that moves your vault over in minutes. Other Open-Source Alternatives Proton Pass: Newer, very sleek, and includes free email-masking aliases. KeePass: Completely offline and local. Great for tech experts, but has no built-in cloud syncing. The Bottom Line: Switch to Bitwarden. It gives you everything LastPass used to offer, completely for free, with vastly better security.🌐🌐

Yes. It is. Old boss got me on lastpass over a decade ago. Always had issues logging in to it. Then they made the change that free plan only allowed one device access. Stopped using it. Found bitwarden last year and moved everything off of web browser storage and Microsoft Authenticator. Organization options are a lot better. Auto fill is a bit of an issue sometimes, but workable.

IMHO.... After years with Proton, switched to Bitwarden. I had the full Biz Suite with Proton. Since they started using influencers, the9r support tanked big time. To the point thenhelp takes days at times a week of back and forth emails. They only have a chat for VPN needs. Bitwarden by FAR... Support hands down is better. As far as the password manager, I consider it equal if not better in some areas. Recently, switch to the paid version. Not out of needed, really because, it's cost is low enough to allow even better features and when support is this focused, they deserve the subscription.

Claude doesn't use any passwords, does it? At least in my case it always logs me in by sending link via email, so there was no need for me to have any credentials saved in Bitwarden for it. But in any case you change the URL in Bitwarden saved credentials to make it match only on specific URLs, like only on login page and now on whole domain. That should help avoid filling text boxes when you use the webpage normally.

I read this. And it's still not clear what their monetisation model is. Like, they're self-funded? How long will it take to burn all the money? They talk about transparency, but their site doesn't offer a hint of what premium cloud features they offer or their pricing (I see on the roadmap `Premium Hosted Features` in Q4 of 2026). BItwarden was also *free forever*)

    r/PasswordManagers · Bitwarden BAD NEWS

I was a KeePass user, then got a company-paid 1Password. Then, left the company and didn't want to go back to KeePass - 1Password was much more convenient. Landed on Bitwarden only because it's free. After 6 months, I can say that 1Password is faster. Both the desktop client and the browser extension - Bitwarden's extension takes years to unlock. UI/UX is better - some of the stuff in Bitarden can only be done through the web interface. Even creating a new login requires fewer clicks in 1Password. The moment bitwarden becomes paid - I will switch to something different.

r/PasswordManagers · How is Proton pass guys?

It's good/fine overall. I used 1P for years and when they increased the price earlier this year, I decided to pay for a year of BW and PP and give them a try. I got PP on the $2/mo forever deal they were running for a couple of weeks, so the price between the two is basically the same (PP about $4-$5 more per year). Overall, I prefer the UI and organizational structure of PP over BW. But for my use case, BW has been better at auto-fill than PP. There are a couple of websites I visit somewhat regularly that BW doesn't pick up the fields in for some reason so the auto-fill doesn't work, but there are several more where that is the case with PP. So, if my subs were about to renew this week, I'd probably stick with BW and use the free version of PP for my backup. But, if PP can fix some of the auto-fill issues I'm experience on several of the sites I use, then I might flip that around.

r/PasswordManagers · Trying out Biwtwardeb and Proton Pass - differences in approach

Nice breakdown, that’s pretty much how I see those two as well. Bitwarden feels more flexible but takes a bit more setup, while Proton Pass is more streamlined with built-in features. If you’re testing different options anyway, you might want to try RoboForm too. I’m a long-time user and it’s been really consistent for me, especially with autofill and syncing across devices. Could be worth adding to your comparison just to see which workflow feels best for you.

r/PasswordManagers · How is Proton pass guys?

It’s decent overall, especially if you care about privacy and already use Proton stuff. Autofill works fine most of the time, but depending on the platform it can feel a bit less polished compared to more mature managers. That’s kind of the tradeoff. Good privacy focus, but still catching up in terms of UI and consistency. If you just want something that “just works” everywhere, options like Bitwarden or even RoboForm tend to feel a bit smoother day to day. If you’re already in the Proton ecosystem, it makes sense. If not, there are slightly more refined options out there.

I just moved from 1password to bitwarden free. It allow sharing of 2 collections (folders basically) with another bitwarden user. It seem the best 'free' good password manager out there imo. it's also no nonsense and just keep logins, IDs and whatever in a vault. if you like, you can even create your own instance vaultwarden and use the official bitwarden clients. I did wanted to use/try apple passwords, but it doesn't allow multiple URL per login (sometimes some websites use multiple url for this like the shop and forum etc), also not able to add more fields for more info, just notes.

Left after the 2022 breach and never looked back. The breach itself was bad, but what really got me was how they handled the communication — downplaying it at first, then slowly revealing how much was actually compromised over months. Switched to Bitwarden initially since it was the easiest migration path and open source. Have since tried 1Password and a few others. Honestly, for most people the differences between the top-tier options are marginal — they all handle the core job well. The bigger lesson for me was doing the comparison properly rather than just going with whatever's popular. There are some solid breakdowns out there that compare the security architecture, not just features. No scenario where I'd go back to LastPass. Trust is hard to rebuild after something like that.

They all have their strengths. For example: 1Password: It stands out for having a more polished interface, offers labels for better organization, features automatic login, and recognizes more websites where other password managers often fail. ProtonPass: Its biggest advantage is its integrated email aliases, and it's also slightly cheaper than 1Password. If u actually look at it correctly, protonpass is more protected than bitwarden. My account literally uses 3 passwords + 2fa.. But i love how Bitwarden allows us to control KDF settings which proton doesnt(i hope proton uses good settings by default). Proton Pass works best with Proton Unlimited.. i personally love it.. i do agree with Autofill issues, nowdays better but still not the best. 11# never happened with me though.. Overall i like Proton Pass more. But i still use bitwarden, keepassxc as backups..

    r/PasswordManagers · Why not keePass?

First, if you like KeePass, that's great, there's nothing wrong with it. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to get too hung up on one PW manager over another. I mean, you get 97% of the value just by using any of them. For a long time, up until a few years ago, I used to use software similar to KeePass, called Password Safe, with Dropbox handling storage. I jumped to Bitwarden when I switched from macOS to Linux for my main computer, and the Dropbox integration on Linux seemed like a pain. I have a free Dropbox account, but I don't actually use it. In addition to handling the storage layer for me automatically, Bitwarden has solid Yubikey support on many platforms. Also, I don't like to use browser integrations for passwords, I copy and paste them from the client (which is a weird thing for me, not something I can really defend), and Bitwarden works really well for my workflow. I haven't tried all of their competitors, but I've used a couple of different ones at work, and I like Bitwarden's app best. I pay for Bitwarden, but it's really cheap. When I started paying it was to get Yubikey support, but now I think you get that with the free accounts. I continue to pay because I really don't want them to shut down not because I need special features. I use their back end instead of one I host myself because it's easier, and because I think they're almost certainly better at locking things down than I would be. I have two, and only two, problems with them. First, they don't provide an official Flathub version of the desktop app for Linux, and second, I wish I could change a setting so the search field would clear when I change types or folders in the left on the desktop app's gui. The Flathub thing is kind of a real problem, but the search field thing is just a nuisance.

I'm in a similar boat. I love 1Password, but I like having an exit plan if pricing jumps. For free options, Bitwarden's been the most solid for me so far: it's open source, has a legit free forever tier with unlimited passwords and devices, and importing from 1Password via CSV is straightforward. If you ever end up running a small team or business, LastPass is worth a look too, they've rebuilt a lot of their security stack since the breach, and G2 keeps ranking them a top password manager with especially strong marks for small-business usability, ROI, and secure sharing. r/PasswordManagers · Proton Pass vs Bitwarden

TL;DR If you don't want to go mad with searching, avoid Bitwarden. Protonpass is the best at this. And for me, searching is a key feature. Full comment: 1) ProtonPass for teams costs half as much as Bitwarden for teams (2€ vs 4€ per user) (P.S. I'm going to chose the family version to save money, even though I obviously lose one place for each “package” because I have to put myself as the manager. But for my purposes, it's more than enough, because there are only a few of us managing passwords for each sector. Furthermore, I don't need all employees to have the paid version, so the free account will be sufficient for them. Of course, this means I will lose truly centralised management.) 2) The **GAME CHANGER for me was the SEARCH function**: \- this concerns the web version and the BitWarden desktop application. Let me give you an example: if I type “amazo”, it only finds 3 results, but if I type “amazon”, it finds 5! The search should work the other way around: the more I type, the fewer results it finds. \- Second aspect: if I search for “amazon” in my ProtonPass passwords, it finds 6 results. The same goes for KeePassXC. Bitwarden 5 and PassBolt only find 3. This is because it poorly manages the notes field. For me, the search aspect is fundamental. If you search online, you will find confirmation that Bitwarden's search system is different in scope from the apps, and this has been a known issue for years. 3) Proton is building an ecosystem, and I like that. If I need it in the future, I already have an account. 4) The only weakness of ProtonPass is the lack of ‘subfolders,’ but they have just announced that this feature will be implemented within a few months.

I’ve tried almost every password manager on Android and honestly none of them worked as smoothly as Google Passwords. Autofill was always hit or miss. Then i installed Cromite to de-google a bit, and surprisingly both Bitwarden and Proton Pass worked perfectly there. But Cromite itself didn’t run well for me, so i dropped it. Switched to Firefox and Proton Pass has been super smooth. I also installed the Proton Pass extension for quick password generation and address autofill. Bitwarden’s login autofill worked fine, but it didn’t fill addresses or cards for me, so i ended up sticking with Proton. Not planning to change anything now — this setup finally works

r/PasswordManagers · Leaving LastPass. Using Apple Passwords + Bitwarden as Backup/Shared Vault – My Hybrid Setup

I have used LastPass , Proton Pass, Apple password and now1Password. I left last past years ago when they had their breach. I tried Proton Pass and it’s pretty decent, but at the time it didn’t fill credit cards although it does now. I tried Apple passwords and it was pretty good but moved onto Bitwarden as I don’t want to be locked into any ecosystem if I ever need to leave Apple. I recently left Bitwarden 1Password as it has a better phone features and my Bitwarden chrome extension took ages to load and kept on freezing. Bitwarden is still good. I was having some issues with access in the family vaults.

r/PasswordManagers · NordPass , Apple Native or others

If you want a good and not very expensive Password Manager for Bitwarden.$10/ year for premium. If you need a lot of bells and whistles with a lot of features, go for 1Password. $36/ year for service.

r/PasswordManagers · Looking to switch out of NordPass

Actually, parallel universes because I was on the same boat. I had a 2yr plan with Keeper and it was actually pretty good, standard, did the job pretty fine. I jumped into the same quest for 2 reasons: Breachwatch (dark web monitoring) at Keeper is an extra service and they don’t offer email masking. Everything else in all honestly works fantastic 10/10. Then.. tried 1password, protonpass, Bitwarden… 1password I felt was a bit clunky and autofill was not as good as keeper. Though UI is fab. The migration import/export sucked. They only give you a 14 day trial. Email masking only if you have a fastmail subscription. Watchtower and all that, estelar. Moved onto ProtonPass… hated it. They push too hard the premium features and personally I like an a-la-carte type situation where I can use multiple apps from different providers instead of using the whole proton universe. They have email masking through SL but I think you need a proton email. I don’t know it didn’t click for me. UI is meh. I feel it needs more time and development. I dare to say maybe give it another year? Moved to Bitwarden. Easy. Solid. Import/export fab. Email masking with annonAddy, SL, email plus log ins. Cheap. I recommend over proton, in my opinion. Great product. Unfortunately the last few months, started having lots of bugs on iOS and firefox, didn’t save passwords for me after edit, logged me out, wouldn’t recognise my password at times. Autofill wasn’t recognised sometimes. So I thought I’ll move back to Keeper. But then decided to give NordPass a try, and right now and probably will say, in my opinion, Nordpass is killing it. I tried most.. and hear me out I am not expert on technicalities for password managers or an IT person. But NordPass seems to be really good so far. Probably not what you wanted to hear but give it a go to Proton and others a go and see for yourself, keeping NP as your main backup until you decide to migrate fully. I tell ya if you’ve been using NordPass for 2 years the closest one to UI is either 1password or maybe Keeper but I guess it will all depend on what you’re after in terms of features. Sorry for the long post. 😁

    r/PasswordManagers · leaving NordPass

I’m still on NP. I tried Bitwarden and really liked it. I quickly discovered that it did not have a password history feature which I found invaluable. I’ll probably give them another shot in the future.

r/PasswordManagers · Advice moving away from lastpass?

    >I use the free Bitwarden as my online password manager. Do you use the extension or the Windows app on PC/Mac? The browser extension of Bitwarden doesn’t clear the credentials after the timeout, even after I set this in the settings. It just shows a blank entry after the specified time. If you have clipboard history enabled in Windows, it will display your passwords and usernames. However, the desktop app of Bitwarden doesn’t have this problem, and its entries don’t appear in the clipboard manager. >I use KeePassXC as my backup offline password manager. KeePassXC also doesn’t record entries in the clipboard like BW desktop application. Thus, Bitwarden is better as a backup, while KeePassXC serves as main password manager.

r/PasswordManagers · Advice moving away from lastpass?

Yeah ice heard good things. I'm trying out Bitwardeb first to see how it goes. If not I'll upgrade. Someone mentioned sometimes Bitwardeb doesn't auto populate or prompt to fill in, so I hope 1password is better. Last pass used to be super annoying like this. Not working sometimes and forcing popups when not necessary

r/PasswordManagers · Advice moving away from lastpass?

You can export your lastpass and then edit a copy of the export to remoe the dupiicate in a spreadsheet. Try out the different password manager to see which one works for you. There is no perfect password manager. It's going to be the password manager that has the features and gui you work and tthe price that you are willing to pay for. There aren't too many competitor for Bitwarden for free tier. There is proton, but various post indicate that it's less baked than Bitwarden at this time. You may find that some of the items didn't export properly. You can store things like your passport in last pass and some of them may not export properly. Your password item should work. The other thing to consider is that you will need to relearn how to use the new password manager. Change your mindset to learn how the other PW do things. If you feel that it must work like Last Pass then you should stay with last pass.

    r/PasswordManagers · bitwarden vs nordpass 2025

I don’t understand these types of low effort posts. Bitwarden is free. Zero cost to give it a try. Why do people want to keep paying for some similar service when Bitwarden is so good? People like to burn money?

r/PasswordManagers · What is the best online password manager right now? Bitwarden, NordPass,1Password, etc?

This sounds like the opposite of ease of use. Apple passwords is fine for IOS but what if multiple OS's like windows, linux etc.. bitwarden is overrated and bang average. I'm not a 1password fan boy by any means but everything just works on any device or OS, never had issues with autofill, opt etc.. in terms of price its like what £27 or something for 1 year
