KeePass / KeePassXC

KeePass / KeePassXC, packshot

People just don’t want to bother with the additional steps required to sync a KeePass database. Most prefer Bitwarden or other cloud-based options because they’re easier to use. But in terms of security, then yes KeePass is very good because its offline.

Keepass is unfortunately the most undervalued Password Manager out there. Keepass is one of the best Password Manager formats. Open sourced Can be used across by software supporting Keepass format + so no lock in Excellent encryption For iOS / Mac you have excellent software options like Strongbox / Keepassium Many options for Android like Keepass DX Multiple sync options - local, WiFi sync, ____ Excellent 2FA for password file with Keyfile on USB So many more advantages. And yet, undervalued!

r/PasswordManagers · Just got another breach email from LastPass, what is actually the most secure password manager right now?

Why would you choose to continue using LastPass when it's notoriously horrible in terms of security and data protection, and is specifically not recommended for consumer use? It's time to switch to something that has a solid reputation, and is recommended. Bitwarden, 1Password, Proton Pass, Robo Form, and KeePass. Those are the PMs you should be choosing from.

    r/PasswordManagers · Why not keePass?

It's a good choice, but not for everyone. It requires a higher level of technical ability, and comfort with tinkering to get it just right for you. Most people don't want a project. They're looking for something that works out of the box with no tedious settings or configuration. They just want to install it, and have it work without much effort. For the technically inclined, KeePass can be a great choice. But for your grandparents it's not the best choice.

    r/PasswordManagers · 1password o nordpass

There's no good reason to use LastPass. They've been breached twice, and caught storing some user data in plaintext. They've squandered their reputation, and should be avoided. Bitwarden, 1Password, KeePass, and *maybe* Proton Pass are the only options to consider.

r/PasswordManagers · Bitwarden scrubs ‘Always free’ and ‘Inclusion’ values from its website as longtime execs step down

I'm off to KeepassXC... I even pay for Bitwarden premium, but them "potentially" changing the free tier isn't the way. I just want stability with something that looks after my passwords... Seems Keepass and its various 3rd party apps are a better bet for long term stability. The removal of the "Always Free" should rightly have people worried as that's a shift from one of the core values of Bitwarden for me.

r/PasswordManagers · Bitwarden scrubs ‘Always free’ and ‘Inclusion’ values from its website as longtime execs step down

If you sync the database via whatever your preferred way may be. So you essentially have the same file in multiple places or on your cloud of choice. If you have a file that conflicts then you can merge the offending file with your current database using the merge option on both Keepass XC and DX (on android). Again bother Keepass XC & DX both support passkeys. So therefore work on both PC and Android. As I say I'm not sure about Apple devices.

    r/PasswordManagers · Keepass for android?

If you pair Tailscale with syncthing then it can transfer your database securely between devices, you just need to make sure you don't change entries on more than one device at a time.

    r/PasswordManagers · Keepass for android?

Mine goes green and the vault is unlocked, but some websites will only fill one or the other... It's a shame as I really had high hopes of ditching Bitwarden (for no other reason than it's all off cloud), but after almost two weeks of trying to get Keepass (XC/DX) to at least autofill properly I've hit a bit of a wall.

    r/PasswordManagers · Keepass for android?

I've recently been testing Keepass (XC on windows, DX on android) and it's pretty decent. However I have been having a number of issues with URL matching & also a number of issues where KeepassXC & chrome extension doesn't find both username and password field when compared to Bitwarden... I've tried troubleshooting over the last week and haven't managed to get it to work properly all of the time. Could be a user error on my part. Unfortunately at this point I'm likely to still continue using Bitwarden, until I can manage to work out the bugs, no matter how much I want to get my data off the cloud.

r/PasswordManagers · Best Free Password Managers. BitWarden vs Proton Pass vs KeePass vs AliasVault Compare Table

I feel KeePass here is not being well represented because there are a ton of KeePass compatible apps and some do support more features than others. For instance KeePassXC has a companion browser extension as well as support for checking your passwords against data breaches (haveIbeenpwned). Credit card data is also in the works, so hopefully one of these days it will support that. Above all, it is truly an open source project that strives to be independent and give you all the flexibility you want. Wanna choose a cloud of your own? Go ahead. Do you prefer this design over that one, or this feature set over the other one? Change clients as much as you want, your DB file is compatible with all of them! Every other service here is created to eventually move you to a paying tier, and please don't tell me you can host your own Bw instance because 99% of people won't be doing that or pay to have a VPS online all the time. So, what I can say is, I'm happy there are choices so people can see what fits best their use cases, but a table like this is inherently a bad point way to compare online services against something like KeePass which is totally different.

    r/PasswordManagers · Anyone use keepass?

So the Möbius Sync app on iOS won’t work properly? Because they are sponsors of the SyncThing project and I’ve seen their logo on the webpage. In any case I’ll always have my current solution which is to have a weekly script on my Mac to copy the DB to iCloud, and it syncs automatically to the iPhone where I then use keepassium.

r/PasswordManagers · Just got another breach email from LastPass, what is actually the most secure password manager right now?

None. Every password manager is at risk of being breached (even offline self–hosted password manager, although the risk is considerably less unless you become a target, they also have their own set of tradeoffs and challenges). The important thing to understand is that password managers are designed for possibility of bad actors getting everything the manager has and still not be able to get the contemts of ypur vault, as long as you and the password manager are following best practices for vault security (which is one of the ways - although not theost important way - LastPass failed and you should have abandoned them years ago). So, my recommendation is still Bitwarden for being open source,  and free (with a cheap premium tier, if you want some added bells and whistles) If you really want to get away from online password managers, then I would go with a Keepass variant like KeepassXC and KeepasDX (for mobile) and use Syncthing to keep the vault in sync across your devices.

    r/PasswordManagers · Can i trust KeePass?

Yes, you can trust KeePass. It is one of the oldest password managers available. KeepassXC is a fork of KeePass that has also been around for a bit, and is just KeePass with some plug-ins built-in to make it more modern and  user friendly. Both are widely used without reports of major issues. Being open source  means you can examine the code to make sure it is doing what it says it is without doing anything else. Even if you can't read the code both are often scrutinized by members of the security community.

    r/PasswordManagers · I Lastpass a viable option now?

No. LastPass sin isn't that they were breached but the way they handled it. Unless their is a complete changeover in leadership (ideally have them spun out from whatever private equity group owns them) I wouldn't trust them. Even if that happens I see no reason to switch to them when free, open source alternatives like Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and KeePass exist.

Yes, lack of built-in sync is considered by some as a disadvantage. To me, it’s an advantage in that KeePass itself is completely offline and there is no online infrastructure that it depends on. No one can hack an online infrastructure that doesn’t exist.

I use keepass as a backup. Bitwarden keeps everything synced and I merge my bitwarden vault into my keepass database every few weeks or when adding more than a few accounts or an important one. That way if I can't access my bitwarden account I have a backup on a local system.

I believe you can import passkeys in KeepassXC which is the windows version, not sure about the Android version. Don't quote me on any of this, you'll have to double check yourself. You cannot import passkeys into Bitwarden, unless there is a method I'm unaware of.

Bitwarden is known to be the world's best major free password manager in the market so you can check them out. They have many core features that should be in a password manager included in their free plan. And if you need to upgrade to their personal plan for additional features, it's only $10 a year. You can also check Keepass which is completely free and gives you everything you need but you will have to put your trust in yourself and make sure you don't lose your passwords and manage them correctly.

I do not enable clipboard history in Windows. I use free KeyScrambler to encrypt keystrokes sent to the browser. I use free CopyQ to view and delete clipboard contents. I have a hot button to clear the clipboard. I have antimalware that checks for keyloggers. If online Bitwarden becomes unavailable due to the servers being down, or my internet connection is not working. In that case, I can use KeePassXC as my backup offline password manager. Don't need your advice.

    r/PasswordManagers · Why not keePass?

I built my own password manager on top of powershell called PowerPass so I could access my KeePass 2 databases programatically. My clients were always clamoring for something like this so I just built one and GPLv2'd it. I've been a fan of KeePass for so long, and after working with its source code it's clearly designed well in addition to being a solid option. The barrier for end-user adoption is the technical-focused user interface. Training general staff on its UI has its challenges. Explaining auto-type, for example, requires an understanding of window focus order, and in some cases scripting. The app's icons are also really small. For this reason browser-based or app-based password managers will always draw more users. That said my wife and I use KeePass as our standard for Windows deployments, unless we are on iOS then it's the modern Passwords app. But for Windows, KeePass is my go-to every time.

    r/PasswordManagers · Why not keePass?

I think both are good options, there may be small pro's and con's. On the security side, keeping your encrypted secrets on someone else's server in a zero-knowledge open source scheme is really not a concern AS LONG AS you have a long strong master password. Even the LastPass folks would be safe if they had a strong enough master password. The open source apps from bitwarden can be vetted to the same extent as the open source apps from keepass. For keepass if you want to access the database on multiple devices you have to make arrangements to have the file accessible on multiple devices, which sometimes works fine depending on your sync or cloud service, and sometimes can be a bit finicky. Personally I use both. I use bitwarden for my passwords and credentials. I also use keepass (XC and DX) but for a different purpose. I store 2fa recovery codes in keepass and I also store totp seeds for a very small number of critical accounts that have yubikey... for example bitwarden. If for some reason I didn't have access to a yubikey I would much rather get in by using totp 2fa than by using recovery code (which wipes out 2fa altogether). I feel my keepass database (protected by password and keyfile) is *slightly* better protected than my ente auth database. On top of that keepassXC interface is really flexible (searching, sorting, tagging) and I like to use it for storing other info like my device pins (in case I happen to forget those). And keepassXC is my backup plan in case for some reason bitwarden servers were inaccessible for an extended period (I would import my bitwarden password protected encrypted json export into xc). Back to pro's/con's of bitwarden vs keepass, I'll mention bitwarden has some other capabilities which could be handy: credential sharing via organizations, info sharing via bitwarden send, emergency access option etc. tldr - I use both but for different purposes. I think they are both good options. I don't see any big downside to using bitwarden but I don't disagree with those who prefer keepass.

r/PasswordManagers · Enpass vs Keepass (Android)

There is no KeePass (Android). KeePass is Windows only. The best Android compatible KeePass is Keepass2Android Offline. I don't know anything about Enpass, but countless smart people are convinced that KeePass2Android is very secure. We know that KeePass2Android has been around many years, and problems would probably have been found and fixed.

r/PasswordManagers · Just got another breach email from LastPass, what is actually the most secure password manager right now?

There are lots of good safe password managers. Bitwarden, KeePass Proton, 1password, other KeePass branches. The critical variable is just to get a good one and be willing to leave if the founders do and the new owners aren't trustworthy. The real secret is your password. If Bitwarden were to lose their vaults, it would not hurt me. In fact, even Lastpass losing its stuff wouldn't have affected me. My password requires brute force and is too long for a nation state to crack in a few million years. By then, either I'll be dead, or have stopped caring. The big factor is long unique random passwords for every site and an unbreakable master password. That's 99%.

    r/PasswordManagers · KeePass

Those 3 are all cloud-based and profit-making companies. They are all excellent and have fine products. KeePass and KeePassXC (both use the same database). They are open source, not-for-profit, and locally based, not necessarily holding anything in the cloud. Normally, they operate with a simple database file on your computer. You can copy the file to your phone, and it'll work there using any of several apps. All five products are excellent. There is a lot of convenience to having all your passwords and secure notes in the cloud. There is an extra layer of security not having them in the cloud. Proton is pretty new, but the others have all been around for many years and are thoroughly tested and reliable. I believe that if you have a strong password and all encryption is done locally, there is no real risk to having the database “in the cloud”. However, not being there at all must be more secure. If you have a really strong password, and are comfortable, I'd recommend Bitwarden. You can use it for free. There are extra benefits to an inexpensive paid version. If you are uncomfortable using the cloud, use either of the KeePass programs. Any one of those 5 will give you a hundred times the safety and convenience of re-using, remembering or writing down passwords or even letting your browser handle it.

I’ve been exclusively using keepassXC for the past 3-4 months. It sync easy enough with my Nextcloud instance, and KeePassium app on my iPhone. The browser extension can be a bit annoying from time to time but it does work. I’ve only had a couple of instances where keepass on my desktop and keepass on my phone were both in use at the same time and it asked me to choose which file was more recent, but that is far and few between. The only thing I wish is that on my phone when a new login is created be it through an app or browser that something popped up to save my credentials into KeePassium. That would really smooth out the experience for me. If vaultwarden or bitwarden can accept my keepass database I might be tempted to try it considering everyone seems to agree is the most comprehensive all around.

r/PasswordManagers · Enpass vs Keepass (Android)

Some folks consider open-source to be important because it means people who understand the code *and* understand digital security can comb through that code looking for weaknesses, rather than relying on paid third-party auditors to review the app's security. How much combing through anyone actually does is another matter. But because Keypass has a rather avid following, I *assume* some people with that knowledge are occasionally giving the app proper scrutiny. As for Keypass-based Android forks, those probably get somewhat less scrutiny. Enpass [publishes audit reports](https://www.enpass.io/security-audit-report/) — granted some competitors have more recent audits, but I don't think the app hasn't hand any fundamental *security-related* updates since these audits. But to directly answer your question, if you're storing your data locally, syncing only via your own wi-fi, or even directly syncing files, both apps are plenty secure. Personally, I prefer Enpass because it's far more feature-rich and more customizable, and I value that customizability — along with the ability to choose where my data is stored. (Full disclosure: I've been using and recommending Enpass for many years, but I've also had a working relationship with them for the last few years.)

I see *a lot* of discussion over 1Password and Proton Pass, here and in other subs. But it seems that more redditors prefer open source software over closed source, so Bitwarden and KeePass/KeePassXC get recommended more than others. However, Proton Pass is also open source software, licensed under the GPLv3. It's just newer on the market, so hasn't seen the adoption the others have.

r/PasswordManagers · Gemini says: Proton Pass > KeePassDx (in terms of privacy and security)

If you use KeePass 100% offline, local only, no sync, then whatever. But if you're going to syncronize your KeePass DB across multiple devices, then you are almost certainly going to use some cloud-based system (Dropbox, Google Drive, Syncthing, etc.). I'd put my money on a vulnerability being found by manually setting up a network sync for your KeePass DB than one in Bitwarden.

KeePass and KeePassXC are rock solid and secure provided you set them correctly. And you can even store the database on something like Dropbox or OneDrive etc provided you use key files stored separately and a strong password.

r/PasswordManagers · Proton Pass vs. Bitwarden

One suggestion: Use KeePassXC for Windows and KeePassium for iOS and Mac for important passwords (email, financial, Apple, Google, MS IDs and cloud password manager login info). KeePass2Android is also available for Android. Keep KeePass file local and edit only on one device (e.g. primary computer). Manually copy master file to devices when passwords are changed. These accounts and passwords change typically change infrequently. Use Bitwarden as cloud password manager for all other accounts and passwords. Backup Bitwarden passwords to offline file periodically. Using a local .kbdx file keeps the most important passwords out of cloud storage. Plus you only need to remember the one very strong password for the KeePass file. The Bitwarden password can be very complex and strong since you don’t need to remember it. Bitwarden gives the convenience of a cross platform cloud database for the hundreds of other passwords. KeePassXC is free. Bitwarden free works fine. KeePassium free works fine for a single database. KeePassium Pro lifetime is worth paying for to manage multiple databases for the family, work, etc and the purchase includes family sharing so everyone in your Apple family can use KeePassium Pro. No subscription fees needed. Where I still struggle is how to effectively use passkeys in place of passwords.

For me, Bitwarden is a seamless cross-platform product. It syncs across all devices, including Windows and Android (and others). You can do this more manually (and possibly prone to corruption) with KeePass (or KeePassXC). If you don't need to run the manager on more than one system, then KeePass (I prefer KeePassXC) is better. Bitwarden probably has some features that KeePass doesn't, but KeePass likely has many features that Bitwarden doesn't.

You are making a great move. LastPass is heavily restricted now, whereas Bitwarden is widely considered the best free, open-source password manager available. Why Bitwarden Beats LastPass 100% Free Multi-Device Sync: Unlike LastPass, Bitwarden lets you sync unlimited passwords across both your phone and computer simultaneously for free. Open Source & Secure: The code is completely public and audited by security pros, making it much safer than LastPass. Easy Migration: Bitwarden has a direct "Import from LastPass" tool that moves your vault over in minutes. Other Open-Source Alternatives Proton Pass: Newer, very sleek, and includes free email-masking aliases. KeePass: Completely offline and local. Great for tech experts, but has no built-in cloud syncing. The Bottom Line: Switch to Bitwarden. It gives you everything LastPass used to offer, completely for free, with vastly better security.🌐🌐

As of right this moment? More than most companies, but with caveats. As I see them rapidly speedrun late stage capitalism, go out of their way to remove inclusivity from their stated values (fro what little that was worth), and change the UX of their app to strongly discourage copy pasting passwords in favor of giving them full visibility over everything I do? I have one more test to do before I switch back to keepass (backed by my home NAS and Tailscale). Then it is just export, import, clean up, and I am good to go.

r/PasswordManagers · [GUIDANCE NEEDED] I'm a free NordPass user, I'm deciding to switch or not to switch to Bitwarden

Maybe do a bit more research. Bitwarden has shown rapid signs of beginning its spiral down the toilet of private equity. Right now it is mostly verbiage but... there is a reason a lot of people (self included) are evaluating what ship to jump to (back to keepass for me now that I can do challenge/response with a yubikey instead of sequence based auth). And I'll add on: Even if you don't care about actively scrubbing inclusivity from branding: My biggest immediate complaint with bitwarden is the UX change for the desktop client. Now it immediately tries to launch as a background process (unless you stop it). And even something as simple as starting the cursor in the search bar after unlocking it is gone. Because Bitwarden corp don't want you using it as a secure(-ish) store for passwords anymore. They want you to integrate it into your browser/OS and let them handle everything for you. And I shouldn't have to explain why a company rapidly speed running private equity hell wanting more invasive permissions is bad...

Keepassxc on desktop, Keepassdx on Android, keepassium on iOS Open Source, database totally offline or into cloud to have Sync with devices: Passkeys/2FA password generator/notes/attachments

    r/PasswordManagers · KeePass

Exactly, you can store your database offline on your devices/HDD/pen drive or on a Nas/pc on your local network (synching it manually or with app syncthing for example) or also online on a cloud having it reachable everywhere and updated instantly

    r/PasswordManagers · KeePass

I'm using keepassxc on desktop (available on Windows/MacOS/Linux) with right click to help auto fill on trouble websites, on Android keepassdx with its magickeyboard to help auto fill on trouble websites - someone prefer Keepass2android that at the moment not support Passkeys- (Keepassium is available on iOS, with its limitations in the free version), moving away from Bitwarden and Proton Pass. My database is online in the cloud with a folder encrypted by Rclone Crypt - I choose to have more privacy even in the cloud - but generally an end-to-end encrypted cloud is fine for most users. Keepassxc and keepassdx/Keepass2android manage the same database and with the cloud, keep it synchronized across all devices. It supports Password generator/Passkeys/2FA totp/attachments/notes/autofill. Don't forget to have a regular backup, I'm using foldersync on Android with daily backup

    r/PasswordManagers · KeePass

KeePass is a robust "database" wherein one can (and may) enter many types of information, not just "passwords." For example, it can store personal identity information such as \[family\] identity information (SSNs, DOBs, sensitive legal information, sensitive financial information, et cetera), all encrypted in one database that may be stored (i.e., automatically backed up) in multiple off-line or online locations. From this perspective, KeePass can serve as a primary sensitive/confidential information database.   Keepass' primary benefit is that it is that robust information database; the built-in world-class encryption is only the icing on the cake, easing the task of maintaining a sensitive/confidential information database.   KeePass may be used as an acceptable "password" manager. Or, it may also be used as that secure "sensitive/confidential information database," which also serves as a central password manager.   The cost of using KeePass is in the attendant regular "management" of the information database. That is, regular maintenance of the information database. But this task is assisted by KeePass' built-in "expiration" feature, which provides for setting expiration alarms on a per-entry basis.

    r/PasswordManagers · KeePass

It’s good. It works differently from the others you mentioned. It does not utilize cloud storage unless you expressly enable and configure the “syncthing” plugin. Without that plugin, if your device is lost or broken, any changes you have made since your last backup will be lost. With that plugin, if you have made concurrent changes on two different KeePass clients, there is a possibility you may lose one of the updates. Ofc this case may not apply to you. Also keep in mind we hear about people who lose access to their cloud storage. Apple and Google are both known to close accounts due to an alleged violation of terms of service. But keeping all this in mind, there is absolutely nothing wrong with KeePass.

r/PasswordManagers · Recommendations switching from Lastpass

Start by doing a full export from LP. Do it now! A few other password managers to consider are Bitwarden, KeePass, and Enpass. Bitwarden has a good free tier, and KeePass is completely free. All three are “public source”, which reduces the risk of a bad actor slipping in unwanted behavior. Some people hate the UI in Bitwarden. KeePass requires a bit more work to set up, especially if you want a cloud mirror for your datastore — Indi recommend that.

r/PasswordManagers · doing the right thing: starting today with keepass:

This might be a good question on /r/keepass. But in any event… > where do you store the masterpasswd!? I’m so glad you don’t think your tiny little brain is a reliable system of record. It isn’t. You absolutely MUST keep an [emergency sheet](https://github.com/djasonpenney/bitwarden_reddit/blob/main/emergency_kit.md). I actually go one extra step and have a [full backup](https://github.com/djasonpenney/bitwarden_reddit/blob/main/backups.md). The backup contains the emergency sheet, and the backup is encrypted. The encryption key for the backup is in my wife’s vault, our son’s vault, and my own vault. The backup is stored on a pair (for redundancy) of USB thumb drives. A second pair is at our son’s house (in case of fire). The encryption key in my own vault is in order to refresh the backups and ensure I have the right key 😀. If I am in a foreign city and have lost all my possessions, our son’s vault can bootstrap my access back into my vault. When my wife and I are both gone, our son—as the executor of our estate—will be able to handle our final affairs. > KeePass on several notebooks? There is a “syncthing” plugin for KeePass. I’m not a KeePass user, so I cannot tell you offhand how well it works. Syncthing mirrors your datastore onto a cloud provider of your choice. Be sure to include all the access information for that cloud provider on your emergency sheet.

    r/PasswordManagers · Anyone use keepass?

KeePass is one of the two password managers I regularly recommend. If you are familiar with it, this could be a good choice for you. For people who haven’t dived through the subtleties of installing and tweaking its configuration (using the syncthing plugin, for instance), Bitwarden might be a better option.

r/PasswordManagers · PM Sugestion 1PAssword or Dashlane or Nordpass or any other?

If I were to make an ordered list, I would probably suggest: * Bitwarden — free to try, with no significant limitations. Only $10/year to upgrade * 1Password — well regarded UI, good customer service, $36/year after a two week trial * Proton Pass — new kid on the block, has its fans and detractors, has a free tier * KeePass — NOT a cloud based app, requires a lot of tinkering and setup, but absolutely free.

r/PasswordManagers · As a longtime KeePass user (and fan), are other options worth considering for password sharing?

i am in the same position, been using keepass for almost 20 years already, but my requirements changed over time: * due to workplace restrictions i cannot sync my keepass database to my work computer anymore * i need to share some passwords with family members, so a local password manager is not sufficient anymore. currently i am using vaultwarden for this, but that forces me to use two password managers, which is not optimal. besides that i still love keepass, the UI is perfect, keyboard shortcuts are Vaultwarden was my first alternative, but honestly i hate the UI. searching for a password is a pain, the UI mixes up vaults, folders, collections and its hard to figure out where am i actually saving my password or performing my search. even worse in the desktop app, which doesnt hightlight the selected vault/collection/folder at all, but still limits the search to the one that is invisibly selected. I also tried passbolt, and while the UI on the web seems more sane, the requirement to have an email confirmation upon login is a blocker for me, as i cannot acccess my mail at work. also it does not have an ssh agent feature, does not support fido keys for login. passky was extremely basic. psono looks surprisingly capable based on their online demo, but selfhosted setup is poorly documented, does not have a dark mode and most importantly no app available for arch linux.

You can trust KeePass — with a caveat. Sharing passwords involves more work. It can be done, but it involves more work than password managers designed to act as centralized services. If you have multiple devices (e.g., a laptop and a phone, for starters), it’s up to you to decide where to place your database file and it’s up to you to figure out how to keep multiple copies in sync. Some techniques are better than others. If you have multiple people who need to share passwords, you may need to break things up into multiple database files, each of which will need a password, and some of those passwords will have to be known by multiple people. And then the synchronization issue will become larger.

Yes, very much so. Free and good is not too good to be true. There are many instances where this is true. I use both Kee Pass proper (the original) and Kee Pass XC. What you must know is that *"Kee Pass"* is a family of software, and no one has authority over it. The bond is they all use the Kee Pass password database format, so they are all compatible with each other. Some of the *"Kee Passes"* will be more convenient than others, more fit to a particular use case. But all have the same security level. Go to the site of the *"true"* Kee Pass to read a list of all *"Kee Passes"*. Be aware that the author of the *"real"* Kee Pass does not endorse any of them. Which does not mean they are not good. At all. The author of the original Kee Pass calls them *"contributed/unofficial KeePass ports".* He lists them [here](https://keepass.info/download.html). He has this weird, pedantic restriction which I can't even understand : >"KeePass" is the password manager developed by Dominik Reichl. Any software by other developers that is using the name "KeePass" in the software's name without any direct non-numeric/non-special prefix/suffix is abusing the name "KeePass" and we do not recommend such software. For example, "KeePassDroid" is ok, but "KeePass Droid" is not. I'm not aware of any Kee Pass variant which would have this forbidden space in its name. I myself write software names adding spaces when there are none, because that's the bloody rule in bloody English, and no stinking software author has authority over the English language. that *"KeePass Droid"* with a space type of name.

It's also free. It's not going to be as pretty as the others, and it's more for tech-savvy people who want more control. If secruity is your number 1 concern, then it's a no-brainer, KeePass.

The only slightly frustrating issue I have is that if I use a Yubikey as Challenge authentication to open the database, the challenge is not compatible between KeepassXC and KeepassDX (in android). This makes the database non-transferrable. It would be nice if the developers could sort this out.

I am confused as to how exploit  \[CVE-2023-24055\](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-24055) fits into this all. Clearly that meant that exporting passwords was easy for anyone with access to the machine. As the developer notes someone with access to a machine can cause other damage -- but it still makes the database wide open to anyone like family members -- and also makes it impossible to convey the database anywhere else (dropbox etc) because that would open it wide open to reading by someone without access to the local machine. I understand that version 2.53.1 was "fixed" in that it now always requires a master key when exporting - but does that really fix it -- why can someone just not use an older version of keepass to export the keys via this hack. I can't find any hard information as to how this severe vulnerability has actually been fixed??? someone enlighten me please.

First it is probably because it is not popular enough, so people don't know it, next it's not sync between devices by default, most people want their password auto sync between their device, and probably the experience is not seamless enough

    r/PasswordManagers · Why not keePass?

I was using it _ages_ ago and what annoyed me to no end was that there were issues when being used on multiple devices at the same time. Like… Smartphones, Desktops. Having to sync the file to some service and making sure that writes at the same time don't cause issues - that is annoying. To me, KeePass was good in the Windows 95 days with only one system. But nowadays? And what it then tootally killed it _for me_ was that for too long there was no Linux port available (yes, I'm that old). No. Thanks. **I** much rather have a self hosted Bitwarden or Vaultwarden.

I mean it's just a simple password database so it's used as it comes. You can store all your workrelated stuff in the database and just keep the file somewhere on your work laptop, preferably a company wide network storage that also has some sort of backup system.

    r/PasswordManagers · Anyone use keepass?

Recently found out that KeePass is my companies recommended password manager. Besides I've already been using KeePass for years and it never let me down. Using KeePassXC on Windows and Linux and KeePass2Android on Android. Synchronisation works good, just put the database on a cloud. Also i feel like it is really easy to handle, you simply get a file to keep safe like a treasure and it'll never stop working. Plus: I sometimes call it keep ass and giggle like a 5 year old

r/PasswordManagers · Proton Pass vs Bitwarden

TL;DR If you don't want to go mad with searching, avoid Bitwarden. Protonpass is the best at this. And for me, searching is a key feature. Full comment: 1) ProtonPass for teams costs half as much as Bitwarden for teams (2€ vs 4€ per user) (P.S. I'm going to chose the family version to save money, even though I obviously lose one place for each “package” because I have to put myself as the manager. But for my purposes, it's more than enough, because there are only a few of us managing passwords for each sector. Furthermore, I don't need all employees to have the paid version, so the free account will be sufficient for them. Of course, this means I will lose truly centralised management.) 2) The **GAME CHANGER for me was the SEARCH function**: \- this concerns the web version and the BitWarden desktop application. Let me give you an example: if I type “amazo”, it only finds 3 results, but if I type “amazon”, it finds 5! The search should work the other way around: the more I type, the fewer results it finds. \- Second aspect: if I search for “amazon” in my ProtonPass passwords, it finds 6 results. The same goes for KeePassXC. Bitwarden 5 and PassBolt only find 3. This is because it poorly manages the notes field. For me, the search aspect is fundamental. If you search online, you will find confirmation that Bitwarden's search system is different in scope from the apps, and this has been a known issue for years. 3) Proton is building an ecosystem, and I like that. If I need it in the future, I already have an account. 4) The only weakness of ProtonPass is the lack of ‘subfolders,’ but they have just announced that this feature will be implemented within a few months.

Syncthing, webdav, other cloud syncs, rsync scheduled, etc... It is just a file really. However you back up your files - you can do the same.

I use KeePass - I like that it's TOTP can do a screen grab of a QR code so I can keep 2FA embeded with the passwords, rather than on my phone (but with it's OWN password that can be different to your main KeePass password)

r/PasswordManagers · Moving away from NordPass - Suggestions for a Simple Replacement?

I personally suggest KeePassXC, but all the other KeePassXC variants are great too. What you otherwise would pay for, is completely free. You can even slap your encrypted password file onto a flah drive and take it with you. Hell, with KeePassXC's portable app you can access passwords from anywhere; the best part? OFFLINE!!!

It takes some time to adjust the settings to your workflow. But I think it's much more reliable that a web based password manager. A web based password manager has less options, so less things to customize. For a non tech person it can be easier.

    r/PasswordManagers · Anyone use keepass?

I’ve used keepass for many years. It is the repository of every password Ive needed at every tech job I’ve held as well as every personal password. Keepass was an approved app to use on government machines. And the fact that there are clients for windows, Linux, android and iPhone make it perfect, not to mention the ability to self host the keepass password file and remotely sync amongst all the devices. I run a virtual private server and self host/serve the file there at what used to be called Linode. For the Mac and iPhone I’ve been happy with the client, Strongbox for the last few years.

r/PasswordManagers · Enpass vs Keepass (Android)

Thanks for your replies. I meant of course KeepassDX for Android. I've also used Keepass2android. but Keepass2android does not work reliably like KeepassDX when it comes to autofill. Same app, same phone: Autofill with KeepassDX works, but it doesn't work with Keepass2android. I had considered enpass because I like the integrated keyboard of Enpass better than that of Keepass2android or KeepassDX. So if autofill doesn't work in any app, you can easily switch to the Enpass keyboard. With Keepass2android and KeepassDX it is tricky. So if there are no security concerns, enpass seems to be the better choice for me.

r/PasswordManagers · PM Sugestion 1PAssword or Dashlane or Nordpass or any other?

Thank you so much for these rankings. * Bitwarden - Already have family access, so another option is preferable. * 1Password—Looking at it * Proton Pass—Personally, I use any single product of any ecosystem, and I'm using ProtonMail, so that's also not for me. * KeePass—needs to be cloud-based. It may be possible with KeePass, but that needs some extra time to set up, so no. At the end, 1Password is here. Why didn't you mention Dashlane and NordPass? Are these not a good option?

r/PasswordManagers · Advice moving away from lastpass?

    >I use the free Bitwarden as my online password manager. Do you use the extension or the Windows app on PC/Mac? The browser extension of Bitwarden doesn’t clear the credentials after the timeout, even after I set this in the settings. It just shows a blank entry after the specified time. If you have clipboard history enabled in Windows, it will display your passwords and usernames. However, the desktop app of Bitwarden doesn’t have this problem, and its entries don’t appear in the clipboard manager. >I use KeePassXC as my backup offline password manager. KeePassXC also doesn’t record entries in the clipboard like BW desktop application. Thus, Bitwarden is better as a backup, while KeePassXC serves as main password manager.

    r/PasswordManagers · Keepass and Bitwarden
