J’ai la petite version (8000btu) et en 2h je suis passé de 29.5 à 26 en pleine apres midi dans mon salon de 40m2. Dans ma chambre de 12m2 sous les toits on arrive à maintenir 23 degrés en mode silence

    # Midea PortaSplit 8000 BTU Review Got one of these a few weeks ago, just before the "AC crisis" and the second heatwave, so the timing couldn't have been much better! # Noise The noise level varies a lot because the fan speed is fully adjustable from 1-100% and the compressor speed changes accordingly. I mostly run it in Silent Mode as this adequately cools my \~4x4m room to a nice 19-20°C, even on a day where it's been over 35. I measured the indoor unit at around 45 dB from 1 metre away (using a phone app) in silent mode, which is about the same as my 16" desk fan on low. It's definitely not silent, but it's quiet enough that I have no problem sleeping with it. If you like a bit of white noise, it'll probably be perfect. It uses inverter technology, hence the much lower noise level than a standard portable. The outdoor unit is about the same volume as a large floor fan on low and shouldn't bother the neighbours. Once I close my bedroom door, I can't hear it anywhere else in the house. The only thing that does stand out at night is the condensate pump. Every 30-60 minutes it pumps water to the outdoor unit, and while it's not loud, it's noticeable enough to wake you if you're a light sleeper. You can get around this by propping the indoor unit up, putting something like a washing-up bowl underneath, and opening the drain at the bottom so it drains by gravity instead. That stops the water pump from running altogether. Compared to a run of the mill portable AC (usually 60+ dB), it's a night-and-day difference. My old portable was so loud I could barely hear myself think! The PortaSplit on silent is just a gentle hum that I mostly tune out. # Installation This is probably the biggest downside, especially in the UK. The supplied window bracket isn't really designed for our outward-opening casement windows. Alternative brackets exist (Amazon sells a few), but they're often out of stock. I didn't want to drill into the wall because I'm renting, so I improvised using one of the universal brackets. I stuck the self-adhesive mounting plate to my window frame and added a couple of shelf brackets to clamp everything securely. Very solid. Pic [here](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fwould-installing-the-universal-bracket-on-the-external-v0-7mx0xtn6n09h1.png%3Fwidth%3D687%26format%3Dpng%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dc08dce639023c897e18fc077d0287a401a9aefa6) The ideal setup would be a balcony or patio where you can simply place the outdoor unit outside and block up the doorway. The indoor unit is also pretty hefty at around 40-50 kg, while the outdoor unit is under 10 kg. It has wheels if you wanted to wheel it about a flat, but it's a 2 man job for most people if you're carrying it up stairs. # Cooling This is where it really shines over most portable ACs. It's far more effective than the portable AC I bought a few years ago. I basically leave it on Silent Mode all day and it keeps my \~4×4 m bedroom at around 19-20°C, even when it was 37°C outside. Door closed and window blocked with a standard window AC kit. My old portable could barely manage to bring it down to 25 on a 35°C day and I'd have to sit right in front of the breeze to feel cool. As an example of how quickly silent mode can cool, one morning my room was about 27°C after being off overnight. I turned it on before going downstairs for breakfast, and by the time I came back about 20 minutes later, the room was already down to around 20°C. So with a relatively small cooling space, most other modes aren't needed. # Running Cost Power usage depends entirely on how you run it. In silent mode it draws roughly 250 W while actively cooling. As the room gets close to the target temperature, it gradually reduces its output to maintain it efficiently, and once the room is about 1°C below the target, the compressor shuts off completely until it's needed again. Even with current costs, costing me well under 10p an hour. If you ran it 24/7 on silent mode for an entire month it'd only set you back about 50-60 quid on your electricity bill. At full blast it'll draw over 1 kW, but in my room I've never needed anything close to that. # SUMMARY I'm really impressed with it. Worth every penny so far. If installation is practical for your home, it's a massive upgrade over a conventional portable AC. It's much quieter, cools far better, and is far more pleasant to live with. Even running almost exclusively in silent mode, it had no problem keeping my bedroom comfortable through the recent heatwaves. If installation is a bit of an issue then next best thing would be a portable with inverter tech for quieter, more efficient running and a dual-hose mod. Would recommend 👍🏻

If I could be sure this would fit in my French casement windows I would buy it! There is such a market here in the UK for good portable aircon yet we are stuck with crappy single hose inefficient units that are a PIA to set up properly with casement windows. I can’t believe no one has jumped on this as for at least the last few years every summer this debate comes up. There is a killing to be made. I’ve converted my current portable to dual hose unit and rigged up a window kit from various bits of recycled materials but it’s noisy as hell, a huge pain to set up and looks terrible. This would be far far better.

I’ve been looking at all the portable AC deals on HotUKDeals and… meh… I don’t get the attraction. Unless you duct incoming and outgoing air, you just end up sucking in outdoor air to replace the indoor air you’ve just vented out. Net result - putting the ‘con’ in Aircon I did a bit of research and stumbled across this unit, seems like a bloody brilliant idea. A load of the noise goes outside and it must be dramatically more effective. Glad it’s working well for you!

These units have been around for 20+ years. They’re mainly European brands and Japanese. Olimpia Splendid Clima 15 HP, Remko RKL 495 DC, Krone 491 DC, Rowenta CA250, Sanyo CA180, Mitsubishi CA300, Mizushi CA900, Yeti CA25 I bought the Clima 15 HP second hand 5 years ago and that unit is from the early 2000s. It’s noisier and likely less efficient than the Midea Portasplit but it’s definitely not a new concept.

I have a Midea Portasplit 8k unit… there does not seem to be an easy way to get the outdoor unit to fit out of a conventional side opening double glazed window (1930’s semi-detached property). Instead, works very well with outside unit when used in conjunction with an external door (e.g. patio door)

No unfortunately. Mostly because they’re completely out of stock (not a surprise) but also having a 9kg steel box hanging out the window 8 floors up above someone’s garden sounds a little dangerous and will almost certainly provoke a visit from the building management company. We may yet get one but we’re looking to move into a normal house first. In the mean time I’ll keep staying in hotels when it’s hot…

Yeah; debating that but the air would have to get down the stairs and through the hall and I think it’s too far to combat heat spikes from sun hitting windows plus consoles and tv. I heard they were a lot more effective than the portable units but didn’t know if 8000 was enough for a big room with consoles and screens and such. Debating 2 of the 8000 units. Suppose it’s moot since finding stock somewhere reputable is like trying to find world peace.

For anyone struggling to get one due to stock or cost i would consider a regular portable unit that can be modified to be a dual hose one these set you back around £200 then if the window opens out cover the frame hole with a sheet of carboard taped on the window place the unit on a high stool or such and put the adapter straight out the cardboard and the second hose out the cardboard as well. much cheaper than a 1k midea. So cheap you can have two if needed for £400

Wowsers, I really wanted to buy a Midea PortaSplit today, but what a pain. I was originally looking at the Meaco Cirro, but that seems to be sold out everywhere. Then I looked at the Wood’s AC Cortina 12K, and that also appears to be sold out. I really like the idea of the PortaSplit. The problem is actually finding one in the UK at a sensible price. The 8,000 BTU version seems to be available from Appliances Direct for around £899, while the 12,000 BTU version is £1,175 from Aircare. Amazon is showing 2nd September delivery, and that's only for the 12,000 BTU model. Apparently, that's also the only version they (Midea) sell directly. I even rang Midea's sales number, but it appeared to go through to a third-party tech support company. They said they aren't actually Midea and didn't know why Midea lists them as the sales contact, as they are a technical support provider. They did suggest buying from Joybuy, who seem to have the 12,000 BTU model for £969.99. Bit of a ball ache, really. I like the idea of the PortaSplit, but between stock levels, pricing and retailers, it feels harder than it should be to buy one. I'm also not massively confident given the apparent lack of UK sales support and the difficulty in finding clear purchasing options, especially considering it's not exactly a cheap purchase. Has anyone actually bought one recently in the UK, and if so, where from?

The BTU is the max amount of cooling capacity, not the amount of power which is used for that capacity. The portasplit is very likely to beat a portable "monoblock" system in terms of power efficiency for the same cooling capacity because it's not dumping the room air outside constantly. Yeah they are scamming, someone else said they offered them £60 to buy the correct bracket. Have also refused me my rights for a refund too! Are you planning to get this fixed wall bracket or the one from the German site? The one they suggest is drilling in which makes it completely pointless having a portable unit! Im anticipating it arriving in a couple of days, im not even sure it'll work for casement windows. If it does will let you know, perhaps we get a few of us together to get this claimed back against Appliances Direct?

Mate I thought I was going crazy. When I ordered my unit, it said on the item's page that it comes with the wall mounting bracket, rather than the window bracket. It arrived, with window bracket 😐 I checked the item page again and it's been updated to say it comes with window bracket and suggests you source a wall bracket elsewhere for casement windows in the UK.

Here is a picture of the bracket sideways. The bracket is 34cm wide, \~47cm tall and \~25cm deep. The outdoor unit is about 51cm wide, 27cm deep and 47.5cm tall. Pretty much every online listing has the wrong dimensions for the outdoor unit. I've also decided to return the unit as it doesn't work well with the windows in my loft conversion and I'd rather not drill a bracket into the loft exterior. The measurements being off are incredibly annoying as the outdoor unit is too wide to easily fit throigh my 50cm wide windows, it needs to be angled out. The outdoor unit also looks nothing like the pictures in all the listings. The unit does actually work well, but there's too many issues with getting the bracket to clamp on a UK style window with rubber lining around the frame and getting the outdoor unit out the window and back in. Unfortunately I don't think any portable mini splits are really viable for me due to the lack of suitable mounting brackets for the outdoor unit. If my room wasn't in a loft conversion and I had a normal wall I'd go for the portasplit and use the wall mounting bracket. Hope this helps. https://preview.redd.it/ybsg4s54bx4h1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1d941df0ad799f05eb45bc23f55e17ccece805e

I'd be interested, but I'd need to install multiple brackets, one for every room I might be interested in using it in. It also sounds like a nightmare to carry the two units up and down stairs if the hose cannot be disconnected. And I'm not sure if it breaks some restrictive covenant to install these brackets on the front exterior wall of my house.

I was very close to buy this. As you mention, it suppose to have by far efficiency compared to other portable unit. I think the only downside is its price. It cost triple than a budget unit. I just can’t justify the ROI given the usage maybe two weeks per year. Instead I decided to convert my hosed unit into dual hose. Although that hose is much ugly than yours. So I consider there is premium if you want to keep some style while cooling your home

Have been looking at these too and based in the uk . It looks a great unit but worried how its going to work well . Also I could get one delivered Friday too so need to make a decision. I'm fed up with the big hoses on the portable units and like the idea it comes with a wall bracket so it can be used upstairs etc and placed outside next to the window with 2 screws .

Their are caravan air-conditioning units in UK that are scaled down versions of the American-style window unit, where the compressor and fan coil sit in one unit, fixed to the window. But we don't have any windows they would work on in our banalow. Hence I did not investigate them. A dual hose portable system would have been my 1st choose, I could have put scalable 150mm core drilled outlet in with ease in bedroom and living room. Due to MVHR we can't have single hose system, I hoping the MVHR will move the cool between rooms. A 4 hose system to put in the loft connected to MVHR would have been nice, but they are hard to get. The PortaSplit is overpriced for want is inside it, I don't understand why only one company makes that design. A high cost to advoid needing f-gas trades person but keeps totally flexibility for where a A2W goes, and advoids any possible planning issues. I don't want the job of educating the local planners etc on the new rules....
