    r/roomba · Question before ordering Roomba Combo J9+ →2024-01-14

The first one I got, the base door wouldn’t close The second one I got, the base door wouldn’t close so I had to take out the shelves, reinstall and then it would close? So seemed like a packaging issue but so weird I got that issue two times in a row Second one then proceeded to have error after error, would constantly get charging errors, and it wouldn’t deploy its mop. I had to literally rip the mop out of its body to get it to mop. It would randomly decide to stop mopping also and only vacuum. Battery is horrible. It was just completely defective so I got a third one The third one right off the bat said the base water tank wasn’t full when it was. I still had the last one I was about to return so I changed out the tanks and it got rid of the error. This one now also has the mopping issue where it tries to deploy the mop, gives up, and vacuums only. Horrible machine

It’s quite a mess after a week of mopping. What I find useful is to first just vacuum and then mop with the vacuum on minimum strength. It’s not ideal but you don’t have to clean as much the roomba

That Roomba video from Vacuum Wars is almost 2 years old now, while the Dreame L50 is a very fresh review. Robots have come a long way in two years, and what was acceptable then is a poor value today. You can get much better combo robots today for less money than the j9.

I actually prefer that the J9 doesn't self-clean the pads. I've tried robots that do, but keep going back to the J9. I keep a month's supply of pads in the station door, and it's literally just 3 seconds to swap a pad. Then, once a month, I put all the used pads in the washing machine on a proper sanitize setting. This gets them way cleaner than a cleaning base station ever will. In fact, many users of cleaning stations say they put their pads in the wash every couple weeks anyway, and they are way more tedious to remove and replace than with the J9 (where it's just on the top). Then couple that with: Not having to frequently empty smelly, dirty water tank Not having to replace clean water/fluid as frequently because it's not consumed washing pads Not having to periodically cleaning out the depths of the base station (even the self-cleaning ones) True quiet when not in use vs hours of hum while it dries the pads Instant starting of J9 vs waiting minutes for it to wash its pads before each run.

I would wait to buy it. I got mine before Christmas and I'm suprised by all the issues. I used to have an iRobot 980 that worked flawlessly. When the j9+ combo works, it's very good. BUT. 1: Starts randomly by itself, mostly at night waking every one up. (Sometimes 2 times a night). This is extremely annoying. 2: The docking station usually don't work. You get a communication error and then it's gone for a couple of days. After some time it's back like nothing happened. The robot can still charge, but self emptying and refill is lost. My wife wants to throw the robot out now. I think the problems are software related, but the feedback from iRobot is close to none. It's clearly a rushed product that is at most in an early beta state. BEWARE!

I love mine! I just leave the dirt detective on and change the mop every night. The floor is very clean. I also have the L20. The L20 is a better machine, is almost like a toy which you want to keep playing, but for cleaning, the J9 combo outperforms.

It's $984 on Amazon right now. Mine has been working great, and seems like a great choice for your situation. I've been testing it head-to-head with a Dreame L20 Ultra that I also have and the J9+ consistently outperforms it in vacuuming, mopping, and navigation (and the app). Couple things to be aware of: It needs light to navigate well, and there is a 2" gap along the walls that it can't mop.

I’ve had a couple issues where I’ve had to reboot it, which has been a little annoying, but it’s still been a great purchase. My floors feel so clean! And this is with two dogs and a spouse who insists on wearing his shoes in the house.

I would highly recommend the j9+ combo for a small to medium size home which has mostly carpet, pets and kids. If you have a large home and mostly hardwood floor, would recommend the S8 or L20/30 instead. The l20/30 requires less maintenance, however the S8 is more reliable and has better navigation. I currently have the j9 combo and L20, but have also tested the L30 and S8. In reality, they are all excellent, don’t worry much about reviews, they are all sponsored at some level!

To clarify I’m having the exact problem as you. The rotating brushes themselves are fine but when’s heya re removed, the dust is moist and built up there so I do wipe that out with a kitchen towel every few days. Have to do it anyway because the filter gets clogged up very quickly with just one short-haired dog in the house. Otherwise the side brushes, wheels and all that are fine.

Ok in 3 days of using this I’m absolutely loving it! I was able to transfer existing maps from the S9 into this and sent it on a mapping run where it only went off and checked outside walls of the lower level and that was it! Ready to use in my areas and zones! I used the Bona floor cleaner in it as Roomba recommended that and it’s worked like a charm so far. It’s so much better knowing where things are than my S9, I was literally demoing stretches on my Persian rug in the middle of the floor after it vacuumed it and it was mopping all around me stopping when it hit The edge of the carpet.

I still have the 980 and I think its amazing as a vacuum even though they discontinued cloud support. I also have a J9+ combo which I supposedly upgraded to a few years ago and its complete crap. It couldn’t find the base, it couldn’t refill the water tank. I ran the 980 after the J9 and it vacuumed a lot of stuff that the J9 missed. Irobot isn’t what it used to be. I have had the robot for 4 months and have been in contact with customer service. They sent me a replacement and it does the same thing. Do you think I could get a refund on the product since it hasn't worked as marketed? Thanks!

Good to know. We bought a J9+ on the Christmas day sale. I was skeptical, but it has made a difference. We have a split level house, so we're moving it from level to level. The dirtiest would really benefit from a mopping more regularly. I'll try your suggestion and see what happens. We're a disabled family, so we need all the discounts we can get!

I have received my J9+ combo couple of days back. So far loving it, I am seeing similar issues like some of other people explained here but it may be still trying to learn and do the job. at times it sits at one place thinking but that is not big issue as it eventually continue from there started doing mop of area where it did not vacuum even once. I will give it it at least 15 days before passing final judgement. It definitely time savers, but not necessarily money savers.

Yeah, I'm new to this Combo J9+ roomba world, I checked mine after the first week/3 cleans. It had dust and gunk built up so I picked it out and all the dust bunnies. I flung it back into the bin then did an empty bin. I might be too patient with irobot but my floors are clean so I'm not overly annoyed yet.

Wish I saw this before I bought mine. It does an excellent job but mine took 9:01 hrs yesterday to do 717 sq. Ft. Absolutely ridiculous. Spend 4:46 cleaning 2:50 charging and 1:25 paused for some reason. Spending a grand on a robo vac I would expect it to be able to do an my 1700 st ft home in the time that I’m at work, I don’t want to hear it run. I bought mine thru Amazon and may return it. I’m going to see if it gets faster after the first week is up. I don’t feel as if we should have to spend $2,000 on a 2 robots to achieve this task. I read somewhere that it’s about 3x slower than manual mopping and vacuuming… that’s a lie. I can vacuum and mop the whole in well under and hour, even if you don’t count the paused time for 1:25, it’s still about 7x slower. My house isn’t littered with objects and furniture either.

If I could post a screen shot from my phone to this sub I would, 9hrs and doesnt ever finish cleaning the whole house, when it goes back to charge a third time, it cancels the job every time. It’s a serious love/hate relationship with this unit. It’s does an absolute fantastic job at vacuuming and mopping. The first week it was balling up some pet hair from the carpet and not actually sucking it up which required some manual pickup but it’s fine now, and the hardwood and tile floors it does great! Doesn’t run over cords, always makes it back to its home, traverses tall thresholds between the wood and tile, recognizes repeated dirty areas very well and recommends a small double clean zone like it should. However, its mapping blows. I really can’t compare its speed to anything else as this is my first but for $1000 it really needs to do a whole level, without failing, and in under 8hrs… which it fails miserably. I’m on my 3rd week now and nothing has changed. I also HATE that every single day, the 1 carpet room has vacuum lines and patterns in different directions every day. 1 day it will do all up and down, the next day, all side to side, and there was a third day it did half vertical and half horizontal with turn marks right in the middle, all this week. After 2 full weeks of daily cleaning it should have this pretty damn well figured out. Idk if it can get better or not, iRobot customer service may be getting a call. I’ve also witnessed it doing the living room, or part of, then running all the way across the house to do the master bedroom, back to the living room to finish it, then back across the house to the master bath, again, into its third week it should have this crap figured out!! So something I tried was setting it to do half the house on odd days and half on even days, and doing that, it can complete a half of the house in 3hrs 15 minutes repeatedly… so on full cleans it returns after 3 hrs, charges for 1.5, cleans for 1.5, charges for 1.5, cleans for 1.5 then cancels on the next recharge, before completing what little is left. 9 HOURS! So I’m on the fence, do I return it and go with a a roborock for $1400? Will it do the whole house in 4 hours? 8? Idk… looking at all the recent reviews for both there are pros and cons. Everyone says the roborock is the cream of the crop, until it isn’t. Terrible customer service, eats power cords, dies after 5 months and can’t get assistance, can’t get replacement parts etc etc etc…. Or do I stick with j9+ and buy a second unit and have each programmed to do half the house? Easy to work on, would have a second unit to swap parts to diagnose issues, half the refilling, half the bag swapping and filter changing and cleaning due to having 2 units for the same sized space. Great customer service from majority of what I’ve read, easy to disassemble and reassemble. I really don’t know which way to go, I may just order another j9+, I’m really happy with the actual vacuum and mop performance, it exceeded my expectations, and definitely doesn’t hurt or scare my cats and I find it relatively quiet, with 2, it’ll clean my whole house in 3h 15 mins… although I find it ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS that I should have to buy 2 for a basic 1700sq floor with an open floor plan, iRobot should give me 50% a second purchase since they are selling a top tier unit that’s as slow watching oil dry. Aside from having it start when I leave for the day, and still running when I get home then it cancels the job is really the only negative thing I have to say about it. If these were $200 and I had to buy 2, it’d be getting 4 stars but at its price point, NOBODY should be wondering if they need 2 units unless it’s for different floor elevations. I hope iRobot reads this post, and also hope it shed some light on anyone wondering if it’s right for them

I was concerned about this also as this was one of the reasons I upgraded to the S9+ back when it was the newest version. The redesigned brushes on the J9+ combo are much longer than the S9+ brushes, so corners are not a problem at all. The new brushes are also far more durable than the S9+ brushes as well. I’m highly pleased and can’t say enough good things about this latest version - I love it when something is expensive but ends up being totally worth it. 😀

Alright day 2. It finally finished the full area which is 900/sqft. It took 6 hours and 8 min. Half of the time the robot looked lost. It had to recharge twice. I fell half of the time it is wasting time figuring out what to do. This same space used to be done by the s7maxvultra in about 1 hour and 30 min with no recharging needed. Mainly wood floor except 1 rug.. I really wanted to go back to a roomba due to quality of material but the navigation is years behind unfortunately. Most likely return it next week.

Had it for 2 days.. first day simply mapped the house. Today took 5 hours 40 min to do 700 sq/ft….multiple stops to recharge. So far not impressed and will probably return it. I’ll see if it will get better while it learns the house. I used to have the Roborock s7maxvultra. Navigation was another level however homebase flooded and ruined my new floor after 1 year even if properly maintained so yes there is always that quality issue and worry in there with “self cleaning” bases. Hope in the next few days the j9+combo will speed things up.

Just to say that it’s my first (proper) robot vacuum (previous was a cheap one good enough for one room and one room only with no navigation). Experience so far (and I’m learning): - it got stuck trice, mostly due to close itself in a room but once was a narrow place - had to reboot 3 times (and fixed) - missing resume schedule, I.e. if it gets stuck, after being freed I saw no option to resume, so I ended up selecting the remaining rooms in a adhoc program. Or at least it was not intuitive to resume (really, I don’t see any resume option) - if battery is not enough for full cleaning session(e.g. mopping everywhere OR high suction), it will forcibly dock to charge and it will take ages (from 2 hours to 6+ hours), I’m on the fence on splitting the job in two days for the full house - It makes noise (unbearable for me but I am noise sensitive); emptying bin is loud but quick, not a big issue - currently: Monday and Wednesday - vacuum everywhere Tuesday and Thursday - vacuum kitchen (crumbs) Friday - vacuum and mop (and takes ages…) Saturday and Sunday - no noise please
